How to Get Your Marriage License To be legally married while in North Carolina, the couple must have a marriage license from a North Carolina Register of Deeds only. If you are a destination bride, do NOT get one from your home state—all marriage licenses are filed at ceremony location only. You must have the license physically present at the ceremony so simply hand it to the officiant BEFORE you start the ceremony and it is that person’s job to fill it out and file it for you, too. WITNESSES: two witnesses are required. They may be anyone over the age of 18 years. This includes relatives, friends, foreigners, or friendly strangers who agree to sign for you. If eloping privately, your officiant might help you get witnesses. WHERE AND HOW: you two may get your license in ANY North Carolina courthouse Register of Deeds office, within 60 days before your wedding date. That license is valid to use absolutely anywhere inside the state. Here is how:

• Complete the marriage application form, either online or in the office.

• No blood test, no medical exam, no waiting period, no residency or US citizenship required.

• License is valid immediately to use at wedding, but only for next 60 days.

• Both parties must be present in office. • People over age 18 years or older--both must provide: ––Applicants’ Proof of Age Requirements: Ages 18+ ––Social Security card or knowledge of number, and ––Valid ID with name and date of birth– Acceptable identifications: Driver’s license (may not be expired), or State-issued I.D. Card (may not be expired), or Passport (may not be expired), or Military I.D. (may not be expired)

• If either of you are divorced within last 60 days, the applicant must provide a certified copy of the divorce decree.

• NC license fee is $60 cash, and some counties let you prepay the additional $10 for the certified copy (which happens after the ceremony). OR, you may order the certified copy of your license about 10 days AFTER the ceremony, from the issuing courthouse

• FYI: your officiant does NOT issue copies. She or he only

returns your license to the issuing courthouse within 10 days, usually by snail mail. The Importance of Printed Products The Importance of Printed Products PICTURE THIS. You’ve met the person you want to spend the rest of your life with and have decided to get married. Congratulations!!! Now the fun begins, planning the wedding of your dreams. You start by selecting the perfect venue, maybe somewhere by the water downtown with a nice view of the sunset. Next, you choose a wedding planner to help you plan every last detail. Your planner becomes your partner in crime. They help you choose the best florist, cater, DJ and photographer. They build the perfect timeline and even help you find a way to politely tell guest to leave the rugrats at home. Afterall, this is gonna be the party of the year!

Prints last forever! By investing in printed products, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that your images are safe from technology failures or advancements. Technology is changing every 3-5 years so what’s current now, may not be in a few years. Remember floppy drives? Forget to upgrade your image storage device and you may find yourself asking around for someone with an “old” computer with a USB drive!

After the wedding and honeymoon is over, it’s time to meet with your photographer and relive your wedding day. You finally get home and download your files from the USB or web gallery and hundreds of clicks of the mouse later you’re done. Weeks later, you say to each other “hey, we need to print a few photos” The following year your computer crashes and it’s not until after your images are gone that you realize you never printed ANYTHING. Your images deserve more than a folder on a hard drive!

Digital is great for now, however printed images become the bridge between generations. A beautiful wall portrait will become a staple conversation piece in your home and a hand crafted heirloom quality wedding album will tell your story for generations to come. Is it an investment, of course it is. Expect to spend $900 or more for a wedding album and $300 or more for custom wall art. Prices will vary from photographer to photographer based on manufacturer and quality. While the cost may be a bit higher than the big box stores, one hour photos, and shutter sites, the quality will speak for itself, not to mention it will far outlast what the average consumer can purchase.

But albums are boring These aren’t your grandmothers album we’re talking about. Modern wedding albums have come a long way. Many offer a variety of full grain, designer or rustic leathers to choose from as well as a large selection of bookcloth and asahi linens. At indigosilver, we offer over 100 different fabric and leather options! We can also emboss anything, and we mean anything we can design on the cover of your book. Check out this mountain scene we designed by hand for the cover of Sarah and Jacobs guest signature book! However, a wedding album isn’t just a collection of your wedding images in a book with a pretty cover, it’s your story in print. A great design uses select images from the day to convey every detail of your wedding. Every two page spread is a moment, whether it’s the first look, father daughter dance, or cake cutting. A good photographer will shoot with the album in mind and press the shutter button with a purpose. To tell your story, moment by moment. Imagine a grandparent that couldn’t attend the wedding sitting on her sofa turning the pages of a beautiful album and seeing your story and feeling as if she were there. Experiencing every moment, just the way it happened on the day of the wedding. Seems better than sitting in front of monitor clicking a mouse a few hundred times doesn’t it! Take a look at the albums linked below to see how we at indigosilver capture a wedding with purpose, then schedule a time to come see the albums in person!

P.S. Rachel and Neal’s album won first place in the Professional Photographers of North Carolina Print Competition! Rachel & Neal: https://www.onlinealbumproofing.com/ album/index/10080756_1481836134/756 Megan & Andy: https://www.onlinealbumproofing.com/ album/index/10081488_1482540753/756 In addition to wedding albums, you may want to consider accordion books, folios, Acrylic blocks or image boxes to complete your printed collection.

Experience counts An experienced photographer not only understands this, but will offer a variety of professionally printed products. They have a firm understanding of resolution, aspect ratios, and color management which ensures that your images not only look good on the screen, but will print perfectly every time. If you’re meeting with a photographer that only offers digital files, it may be a good sign that they don’t have a grasp on the technical side of print making and chances are, the digital files they provide may not print well as a result. If you’re interested in having us photograph your wedding, reach out to us! We’d love to meet with you and learn more about your plans.

getting guests to and from Wedding daY transPortation tiPs When paring down the guest list for their wedding day, many couples come to the realization that their lists are loaded with out-of-town friends and family members. Though out-of-town guests who accept an invitation to the wedding are responsible for their own travel to the wedding destination, many couples feel obligated to arrange for travel to and from the wedding as well as the reception. The latter is especially important, as couples want to ensure their guests make it home safely once the reception ends. Transportation for guests to and from the wedding and reception is something couples can easily overlook, but such arrangements can ensure guests are on time for the ceremony and that no guest has to worry about whether or not it’s safe to drive home after the reception. Couples who don’t know where to begin with regard to transportation for their wedding guests might want to start with the following tips. Shop around for shuttle service. Shuttle service can be costly, but it’s also very convenient. Couples can arrange for shuttle service from the hotel to the wedding, and then from the wedding site to the banquet hall where the reception is being held, and finally from the reception site back to the hotel at the end of the night. Depending on the size of the wedding party, the shuttle service will likely recommend staggering the runs so every guest can take advantage of this convenient service. More runs will be necessary for larger parties, while a handful of runs is likely all that’s necessary for ceremonies with fewer guests. Consider a bus for smaller parties. Couples without an extensive guest list may also be able to get by with a single bus to get guests around throughout the day. A bus will provide similar service as a series of shuttles. The bus will likely only pick up guests at one specific time, making it an ideal choice for smaller parties but less convenient for larger parties where some guests might want to retire earlier than others come the end of the night. A bus can be more fun for guests, who can reunite on the bus with others they have not seen in a while or make new friends with guests who might be affiliated with the other half of the wedding party. Discuss transportation with the hotel where guests will be staying. Some couples may find that a shuttle service or another transportation option will stretch their budget too thin. In such instances, speak with 16

FALL/WINTER 2019

The Perfect Wedding Planner

the hotel where guests will be staying. Some hotels provide airport shuttle service to guests, and may be able to offer a similar service to the wedding for guests who register their rooms under the wedding party’s name. This may come at a fee, but compare the cost of arranging transportation with the hotel versus a private shuttle service. The former might be more affordable than the latter. Even if the hotel cannot provide shuttle service, the concierge or front desk staff may be able to point in the right direction regarding an affordable shuttle service. This can be especially valuable to couples having a destination wedding who don’t know the area very well. Get the details spelled out in writing. Like all aspects of planning a wedding, make sure you get the nuts and bolts of the transportation package in writing before writing any checks. This should include the minimum hours the company will be available for guests as well as if there are any charges related to total mileage traveled. In addition, make sure the agreement clearly spells out how many drivers will be available. Note when shuttles to the ceremony and the ensuing reception will run, as well as how frequently shuttles will be available to guests once the reception begins, and when the last shuttle will leave the reception site at the end of the night. Before signing any agreements, research the company to ensure all of its drivers are properly licensed. Inform the guests. Of course, the guests will need to be informed of the transportation arrangements upon checking into the hotel. Don’t assume you will see each guest before the ceremony, as some may not be making it into town until the morning of your wedding day, when you will likely be too busy to meet with them. So be sure to include transportation instructions in the welcome packages guests will receive when they check into the hotel. Consult with hotel staff a day or two before your wedding to ensure those packages are ready to go and that the correct transportation information is included. Transportation for wedding guests might not be at the top of many couples’ priority lists, but arranging for such transportation can ensure everyone enjoys the ceremony and makes it home safe and sound at the end of the night.

If Michael Buble or Nat King Cole aren’t on your playlists, chances are you may be looking for a first-dance song that’s a little less traditional for your wedding reception. Couples considering a song that’s a little different and speaks to them but won’t necessarily offend the wedding purists in attendance, might want to consider the following tunes: “All I Want is You” (U2) “Amazing” (Aerosmith) “Crash” (Dave Matthews Band) “Crazy for You” (Adele) “Faster” (Matt Nathanson) “For You I Will”(Monica) “Here Without You” (3 Doors Down) “Kiss Me” (Sixpence None the Richer) “I’ll Stand by You” (The Pretenders) “Love Song” (The Cure) “No One” (Alicia Keys) “Nothing Compares to You” (Sinead O’Connor) “Suga Suga” (Baby Bash) “Without You” (Rent Soundtrack) “You Want to Make a Memory” (Bon Jovi)

Wedding dress for success: staY true to Your Personal stYle For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the first and most important decisions in planning a wedding. With thousands of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a difficult and time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before setting foot in a store, the search will be both easier and a whole lot more enjoyable. First things first Start by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend on a dress -- and don’t forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewelry, veil, and/ or hair ornaments. Next, take an inventory of your personal style. If you know that you’re not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately eliminate these options. The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options. Firm yet flexible There will be no shortage of opinions -- from mothers, sisters, friends, and store personnel -- about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision, ultimately, is the bride’s alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. With so many potential options, you might want to consider

910.793.4044

wwww.theperfectweddingplanner.com

bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be “contenders.” Go for a flattering fit Remember: Your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style -- not to fit into a particular size. If you look ghostly in white, feel free to choose a creamier shade or a dress that has decorative accents of a different color near your neck, shoulders and face. Similarly, there’s no rule that a wedding dress has to be floor-length. If you’re planning a daytime or more casual wedding, you might want to consider a tea-length dress (one that falls a few inches above the ankle) or go even shorter. Comfort is key Style and fit may be the two most important factors in choosing a wedding dress, but comfort should be a close third. Ask yourself if you will be comfortable in a particular dress given the setting in which your wedding will take place. For instance, if you’ve always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, you may want forego a dress with a long, trailing train that could trip you up on your walk to or down the aisle. Even if you’re planning an indoor event, having a dress and shoes that are as comfortable as they are beautiful will greatly increase your odds of enjoying your special day to the fullest.

How to Say, ‘tHank you’ It is customary for the bride- and groom-to-be to show their gratitude to all of the people who will make their wedding day special. Weddings today feature people who have roles that go beyond the traditional, like interior decorators and musical soloists. It’s important to remember to thank everyone who contributes to the celebration.

Traditional gifts for bridesmaids are different types of jewelry. Monogrammed stationery, a spa treatment, or another pampering session. As you have with the best man, feel free to bestow a little more thanks on the maid of honor with a more lavish gift. Younger bridal party members can get a similar gift, but one in scale with their ages.

Thank-you gifts should be something thoughtful and enduring. Avoid fad or gag gifts. These gifts should be presented at a pre-wedding occasion. It’s customarily done at the rehearsal dinner.

Clergy

Crafting personalized remarks is a nice way to call attention to the unique tasks of each wedding participant. Don’t simply pass the gifts out in one fell swoop. This way the gift will have more meaning through a personal message. Don’t let thank-you gifts be forgotten. Start thinking of gift ideas early on and plan for any extra time for engraving or other personalization. Groomsmen When selecting gifts for groomsmen, think about a gift they would like but probably wouldn’t buy themselves. This can be cuff links, a fine watch, money clip, or a high-quality wallet. Feel free to splurge a little more on the best man. Bridesmaids

Many couples choose to make a financial donation to their house of worship. Additional tipping or monetary gifts for musicians, alter boys/girls, etc. can also be a thoughtful gesture. A donation toward an officiant’s vestments may also be appreciated. Parents of the Bride and Groom The couple may choose to bestow a gift on their parents, which can be especially meaningful if the parents are taking care of the financial responsibility of the wedding. Jewelry or fine gifts in similar scope to that of the bridal party are good ideas. Consider engraved picture frames that can house a wedding portrait down the road. Others Readers, soloists, ushers, etc. can be given a small token of your appreciation, like a gift card or a personalized memento.

Wedding Whisperer Dear Wedding Whisperer,

We want to marry on a Carolina beach. I hear getting a South Carolina marriage license is difficult and has a waiting period and other stuff. Is getting a North Carolina license the same, or no? Thanks! ~ Jennifer & Matt, Fayetteville Hello! Good news! An NC license is easy to get, even for non-residents of the US. No waiting period, no tests, and a reasonable fee. See how-to details for that on another article in this magazine.

Dear Mrs. Dubba-Dub,

We know you are a photog too, so what do you recommend for best clothing colors, please? Bless you! ~ Ronny and Terry, Raleigh Hi there! White actually has no real symbolism… European people did it to follow royal fashion after Mary Queen of Scots wore a white wedding gown in 1559— almost 500 years ago! No photography back then, so it didn’t matter. Now it does. I recommend wearing colors other than the traditional ones, for a truly attractive contrast. Think of the major colors in your backgrounds, such as green/gold vineyards, or wood/white/black churches, or beige/gray/blue/white beaches. Avoid those colors in clothing because then you camouflage into the background, you disappear. YOU need to stand out more than that! If you are shy about photos, don’t worry, this advice is to make you show up AT ALL in photos—it’s not a neon-glowing effect! So choose non-neutral colors that look great on YOU! Avoid pale blue, silver, gray, tan--those are the worse neutrals. Gemstone tones or tropical colors are ideal. Think contrast from the background! Still want traditional? Wear the borrowed blue

910.793.4044

old bracelet or blue garter or socks, wear a veil, wear a boutonniere or hold a bouquet, wear a suit or tux with a dapper hat or headpiece.

My Dear Wedding Whisperer,

Greetings! My betrothed Sister shall be wedding dress shopping very soon. She is a lovely curvy lady--nay, may I say she is Reubenesque and wishes for large ladies’ dress advice. Can you proffer some insights before we make purchase, please madam? Kind regards, Magdalene & sister Catherine of Charlotte Curves are wonderful! The secret to a lovely presentation, which doesn’t put the bride in pain, is properly fitting foundation garments. Such as, a sturdy and well-made brassiere with the correct shoulder strap configuration, a comfortable and well-made girdle/spanx, properly-fitting stockings (nice ones are classy and sexy), and the proper length and puffiness of petticoat if needed. Next, the bride must honestly note which body parts cause her distaste… and choose dress designs that camouflage that. For example, if Sister dislikes her upper arms, then avoid sleeveless; if it’s her ankles then a floor length dress or pantsuit is needed, if its extra flesh folds on her back, then no backless or low-cut necklines. White is not best color for portly people, so get a color that compliments her coloration. She will have HUNDREDS of choices! Also she should invite open, honest loved ones for shopping trips. If no 360-mirrors in shop, then snap cellphone pics in the fitting room to show Sister any issues from side or behind views (with shop Proprietor’s permission, of course)…then delete them immediately. It will be a challenge--getting a perfect look takes real efforts. If funds allow it, recruit a bridal consultant to help quickly and smoothly coordinate dress, hair, makeup, nails, jewelry, shoes, and bouquet. Photo by Margo Ross Sears

Dear Wedding Whisperer, I am Jewish and my future wedmate is not, but open-minded. My family and I are fine with that, but my great-grandma Nana who lives in another state, may not be. She is going to notice if there is a rabbi or not. Know of ideas to help, please? Thank you! ~ Adam & Riley, Wilmington To keep the peace without too much compromise, I suggest using a Reform Jewish rabbi or a male non-denominational / multi-faith clergy wearing a kippah or yarmulke (skullcap), and at least loosely follow the main tenants of a Jewish wedding ceremony. If Nana can understand, with Riley present, try to be honest with Nana--set the stage, butter her up a little (not too much), and then tell her it will be a more multi-faith ceremony because you respect your wedmate too, a non-Jew. Mention what a good person Riley is and how much respect and love you share. Let Nana see you are truly happy. That is what grandparents really want to see! :-)

Dear Wedding Whisperer,

Dear Wedding Whisperer,

Just curious… how many times have you seen people I watched a few beach weddings from my seaside hotel. get left at the altar, so to speak? Does that happen much? Why do seagulls and other birds frequently gather at the ~ Amy, Wilmington ceremonies? ~ Ethan, Kure Beach It’s very rare. In fact, in 1,800+ weddings no one has showed up alone or had a partner leave last-minYes I do. Beaches are wilderness areas and wildlife seeks ute. Only two couples have cancelled on wedding day prior to start time, via phone or email. food. Those birds collect food by scavenging. They see flower petals lying on the sand and they hope it is crackers or food. Sometimes bolder birds inspect seashell decorations or guests’ bags for food to scavenge. Older birds know that groups of humans usually have food and leave scraps behind, so they are waiting for that. hoW to find the right Banquet hall for Your Big daY Planning a wedding is no small feat, as couples are faced with many decisions seemingly from the moment they get engaged right up until they walk down the aisle as man and wife. One of the biggest decisions a couple will make is where to host the reception. Couples must consider a variety of factors when looking for the right banquet hall to host their reception. The wedding is a celebration, and the banquet hall is where the couple and their guests will let their hair down and hopefully enjoy a festive and memorable night. Because the reception is typically the most lengthy portion of a couple’s wedding day, it’s important to find a place where everyone can be comfortable and enjoy themselves. The following are a few tips for couples looking to find the ideal banquet hall to host their wedding reception. Ask around. Word-of-mouth is a great way to find the right banquet hall. Ask friends or family members who got hitched in the same town where your ceremony will be if they can recommend a reception site. These friends or family members can provide a behind-the-scenes look at a reception hall, from how accommodating the staff was to how flexible the banquet hall was with regard to pricing to how open the staff was to suggestions. Wedding planning isn’t easy, so if friends, family members or coworkers recommend a hassle-free banquet hall, that recommendation can remove a lot of the stress from planning a wedding.

that’s more plain in appearance, factoring in the cost to decorate the latter, and you might just realize the one with more aesthetic appeal is more affordable in the long run. Prioritize privacy. Few couples would be open to strangers having easy access to their wedding reception. When shopping for a banquet hall, look for one that gives you and your guests all the privacy you need. Many couples have taken to hosting the entire ceremony at a hotel, which may handle the bulk of the planning and remove the hassle of transportation for out-of-town guests. However, couples considering a hotel should look for one that can promise privacy from other guests at the hotel who aren’t there for the wedding. The reception room should be secluded from the rest of the hotel so other guests walking by aren’t tempted to walk in on the festivities. The banquet hall is where couples can expect to spend most of their time on their wedding day, so couples should exercise their due diligence to ensure they find an inviting and festive facility.

Consider the size of the facility. Some couples prefer an intimate affair with relatively few guests, while others will desire a large wedding party with lots of guests. Couples can find a banquet hall that’s capable of catering to small or large wedding parties, but find one that fits your party specifically. If your wedding party is small, then avoid a larger facility that will appear empty. If the party is large, make sure there’s adequate room so guests won’t feel like they’re sitting on top of one another during dinner and dessert. Don’t downplay decor. A banquet hall with an attractive decor is not only aesthetically appealing but can appeal to a couple’s finances as well. Such a hall likely won’t need any additional decorations, while a banquet hall that’s unadorned and lacks embellishments will, and those decorations can dip into a couple’s overall wedding budget. Compare the costs of the more decorated banquet hall with the one 24
