Justice for Gibson
Sadly, as most of us already know, Gibson was mortally wounded this March when he was allegedly shot with a pellet gun by his neighbor, Alex Hollinger. Initially Hollinger was charged with four felony counts of cruelty to an animal but a 5th count was added after it was discovered that an additional dog, Chloe, had also been shot.
As of this printing we have learned from Gibson’s mom, Leigh West, that the felony charges have been consolidated into one count of felony animal cruelty. Hollinger has future court dates this October and December. To stay informed on the latest visit Facebook.com/justiceforgibson Find Court Dates on this case: http://bit.ly/Justice4GibsonCourtCase Download, sign and share the petition: http://bit.ly/Justice4GibsonPetition Daisy, the Hell Hound, 8

Halloween Doggie Dress Up Contest Raises $600 for Adopt an Angel! This October the Stone Garden hosted a fundraiser for Adopt an Angel . For a small $20 or more donation contestants got a professional photograph of their dog in costume. They even provided costumes should you need one. 18 dogs participated (and 1 cat) and the top winners will voted on by Stone Garden fans. Let’s hope this becomes a yearly event! www.rufflifemagazine.com
Abby, Harpo & Izzy This past Summer our community lost 3 family members to Blue-Green Algae. Abby, Izzy and Harpo came into contact with the toxic bloom, Cyanobacteria, while playing in and around a local pond. Harpo, the “gentle giant,” was a 6-year Doodle, and well-known hugger and therapy dog at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center where he would visit patients each Friday. He was a favorite among patients and staff alike. Abby and Izzy, 10-year old West Highland terriers, had their own little quirks. Abby, on the left, loved to play ball but hated getting dressed up. She would walk sideways once donning any attire. Izzy, on the other hand, was the mother hen, making sure they all got fed on time and at the ready to alert their humans if Harpo was getting into trouble. Abby, Izzo and Harpo, our hearts go out to your family this holiday season. You were well loved and will be well missed. * RLM will have an article on blue-green algae in our 2020 March issue, as swimming season gets closer.
What happened to the “My Pet is Family” License Plate? According to sources, the petition got the number needed and was submitted to the state. Unfortunately, Senator Bill Rabon, took it out of the bill. RLM will is working to learn more and verify facts for a more thorough story in our March 2020 issue. In the meantime, you can visit sergeifoundation.org for more information.
More Mutt Media sources CAN I PET YOUR DOG? Podcast A personal favorite. Papi and I listen to this high energy, thoroughly enjoyable podcast on our morning walks. Now, if I haven’t had a cup of coffee yet, we slow the roll to 0.8 speed. These girls and their pups keep us smiling every Tuesday as dog owner Renee Colvert and puppy owner Alexis Preston talk to guests about their dogs, discuss dogs they met this week, and brief you on dogs news. They go on assignment to dog events and report back with what you need to know. If there’s a dog, they’re gonna pet it! (you know the feeling, right?)
The area’s BEST MAGAZINE, period. Looking for events, rescues, shelters or your NEW BEST FRIEND? Pickup one of these free monthly issues. You’ll find them most everywhere! RLM will be doing a little behind the scenes story on the team over at PP in our March 2020 issue. We’ll also be highlighting some of the area’s shelter pets that most need furever homes. In the meantime, here’s the skinny: PawPrints Magazine is dedicated to saving the lives of homeless animals by promoting shelter adoptions. We provide an up-to-date pictorial directory of shelters, humane societies and rescue organizations in the Cape Fear area. All non-profit organizations and individuals who are not in the business of selling animals are welcome to participate in the magazine.

Brunswick Nature Park 2601 River Road (NC 133), Winnabow, NC
Gotta say, Papi and I just love spending time here. So much to offer in every season. According to their website it’s 911 acres of undeveloped wilderness! With a kayak/canoe launch site, a 40x40 picnic pavilion and walking, biking, and horse trails, you’ll have plenty do every time you visit. Brunswick County has plans for even more with this site so Papi, Skeeter and I will be back on the regular. Wonder if they’ll be adding more art installations? We’ll let you know.
Sniffspot is a simple app for finding and using dog parks and off leash areas listed by locals
Need a safe space to socialize a reactive dog? Looking to make a little $$$ while helping a dog in need?
We heard about this app on the Can I Pet Your Dog podcast and thought, “what a great idea!” The importance of socializing dogs is well documented but what do you do if the dog parks are just too much? Sniffspot was designed to help dog owners, trainers and lovers find safe exercise and training space for reactive dogs, enabling your pup to get the exercise they need in the safety of a private area. It’s an app that helps you find local space AND list your space, as well. There’s only a couple spaces in our area right now but hopefully we can help it grow. Download the app to your iPhone or Android OR visit www.sniffspot.com to learn more. If you’re interested in trying a local spot out, the great folks at Sniffspot have given Ruff Life Magazine readers a code all their own. Enter the code: RuffLife at check out to get $5 off your first visit.

Papi’s Pick Papi and I swung in to the Cameron Art Museum while running an errand. Don’t know why I never noticed the outside art before but it sure grabbed our attention this time. These few photos don’t do this Papi Pick justice. The grounds have some very interesting and simply “cool” installations that you and your buddy can enjoy together. There’s also a lovely, and educational, Civil War Trail you can stroll along. Take the time to read the plaques, signs, stones and memorials and you might learn a little more about some of our local history. In case you come unprepared, you will find a doggy station at the ready.

Bullies 2 the Rescue (B2TR) Headquartered in North Carolina, with satellite offices in South Carolina, Alabama, Virginia and Maryland, B2TR's mission is to ensure the safety and well-being of English Bulldogs while also educating the public in their care. We rehabilitate and re-home English Bulldogs that are sick, neglected, abused, or injured. Moreover, we provide a safe alternative to shelters for owners that are faced with the already difficult decision of finding a new home for their English bulldog. B2TR rescued 36 English Bulldogs our first year and since forming have rescued more than 700 dogs. The rescue has approximately 50-70 dogs in foster care at any given time. We need DONATIONS as our Vet bills are staggering. We also need volunteers, supplies, and support for the care and treatment of the rescued English Bulldogs that we take into our organization.
Adopt, Don’t Shop! www.bullies2therescue.com We are always in need of volunteers, donations, supplies, and support! Bullies 2 the Rescue is a 501c3 • (704) 882-1525 323 Unionville Indian Trail Road, Indian Trail, NC 28079

We rescue English Bulldogs regardless of medical condition and as foster homes become available. Veterinary care is our biggest ongoing expense, even after our veterinary care providers extend rescue discounts. We are an application ONLY rescue. We do not have adoption days although we will finalize adoptions at our events. ENGLISH BULLDOGS are very high maintenance creatures and require prior knowledge of their daily care and potential expenses of ownership. We strive to place our dogs in “Furever homes that will be able to meet those needs and have the means to provide medical care in the future. Our adopters must be completely prepared and aware of what ENGLISH BULLDOG ownership entails BEFORE both parties agree to an adoption. We do have a private shelter called the BUNGALOW but most of our dogs are fostered in private homes. (Please note that the Bungalow does not allow visitors or volunteers.) The rescued bulldogs are reacclimated to family life and their temperament is assessed. After a brief foster period (minimum of 2 weeks) recommendations for placement are made based on information provided by our foster families. Foster families also give input throughout the adoption process. Volunteers are needed all the time. If you live in the areas we cover (NC, SC, AL and VA) and want to be a part of a great organization please contact us. There are many ways you can help. We are always in need of foster homes. If you have always wanted an ENGLISH BULLDOG but have no ENGLISH BULLDOG experience, fostering for B2TR would be the perfect initiation to the breed. We provide all vet care, you provide the food and TLC. If you love English Bulldogs and want to be a part of a great organization please contact us. There are many ways you can help.

Papi was up for something a little different for this issue so when I met the folks from Penderosa at Monty’s Home Expo this February we had a perfect fit!
Rosie, a 9 yro female mini horse used previously as a therapy pony and her pasture mate Knight, a 7 yro gelding mini aren’t as interested in Papi as he is with them.
Max & Star, 20 yo wild BLM mustangs
Though not specifically a dog rescue, they do welcome well behaved dogs to their sanctuary to meet and greet the various rescued animals that are there.

For Homeless Animals Transforming Animal Lives From Homeless to Homes
Heidi’s Hope For Homeless Animals, Inc. is a North Carolina 501(c)3 nonprofit organization who helps save lives of homeless dogs and cats in our community. We are committed to working towards a time when all dogs and cats have a home. Heidi’s Hope For Homeless Animals, Inc.: transforming animal lives from homeless to homes, one dog/cat at a time. Heidi Arnold was an adorable Cocker-Spaniel Pomeranian mix who was by her Mom’s side almost every day for over 17 years. Heidi was always a happy dog who sported a never-ending tail wag! Heidi was a sports dog who loved kayaking and playing soccer . To honor Heidi, her mom, Trish, founded Heidi’s Hope to continue Heidi’s goal of helping homeless and abused dogs and cats. Heidi will forever be greatly missed, but her life will forever be a legacy of love for thousands of dogs and cats in desperate need... Heidi would want it that way.

Heidi’s Hopehas been a huge help to our community during Hurricane Florence and Dorian by coordinating donations to local animal rescue groups and to Pet Food Pantry of Eastern NC in Greenville. In addition, they have filled two tractor trailers of pet donation drives to help the Hurricane pet victims of both Hurricane Irma (delivered to Florida and then to Puerto Rico).

Winston Churchill was an English Bulldog who loved food, sleep, clearing a room with his flatulence, and most of all, people. In 2016 Winston was diagnosed with a tumor on his spinal cord, too close to his heart to risk surgery. Winston was a fighter who took to the streets in his wheelchair like a champ. He was always quick to greet his neighbors and other pups with a little hustle in his step. Sadly, this August, he left us but we can all learn from his resilience and big heart. As his owner put it “If I learned anything from Winston, it is to love everyone the second you meet them, without waiver, and watch them love you back instantly. “
