So Good it’s Freaky
One of the questions I am asked about the most is, “what can I do to add value to my home?” There are things that do not cost a lot that can make a BIG impact on the perceived value that can translate to real value. Inexpensive changes can include: 1. Daylight light bulbs – This creates a bright, welcoming home 2. Pulls on the kitchen cabinets - This is such a small thing, but it can really make a kitchen pop. Budget-friendly knob packs can be found on amazon 3. Paint can transform a room - Trending colors will help add to the perceived value of a home. Perceived value: what a potential buyer is willing to pay for a home-based on how they perceive the home. Which house would you pay more for?
This is the same house, but after the home was painted with a trending color and staged, perceived value was increased. This home sat on the market for 4 months without any offers. We listed the home after the suggestion of paint and staging. The home sold in 8 days for full price. Another home we recently listed felt dark because of low waage light bulbs. We knew it would impact how people felt when they looked at the house and would impact the quality of offers. We replaced all of the lights with daylight bulbs and it transformed how the house felt. The house sold within the first weekend above list price. Something as simple as light can change a home. Are you considering making upgrades to your home and would like an expert opinion? We’d love to help! Let us know and we can let you know what changes can help have the biggest impact on YOUR home. 3700 Standridge Dr. Ste 209 | Lewisville TX 75056 | (469) 777-8225 | newhomedfw.com

As we reconnect with our friends and family, let us remember our neighbors who are currently in need. The holidays can be like a riptide of sadness for so many in this area, and that’s when Providence Village shines the brightest. Your spirit of generosity and compassion for others is what makes this a community that cares! Whether through organizations like the Providence Village Hope Foundation, 380 Rotary Club, Providence Village Church, or your own charitable platforms, we encourage you to continue the great work you have been doing. Your consistent partnership with our area schools, an outpouring of donations to LovePacs, Souls4Salvation and Toysfor-Tots, just to name a few, is outstanding, and showcases the heartbeat and pride of Providence Village. The ripple effects of your support have a lasting impact on the recipients and fosters an environment of fellowship and community in which we all can share and love. As we reflect on our ten years of living in this great community, it is with mixed emotions that we have made the difficult decision to move from Providence Village and resign as your Mayor. It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve you. We will take the values you’ve instilled in us to our next adventure. We trust that your love and support of this town will continue to foster and embrace the true essence of the Providence Experience. Happy Holidays, Providence Village! The Barn Door Guru
D
Dustin Henson of Rustic Customs is best known as the Barn Door Guru of Providence Village, but did you know, he makes something for everyone? Flashback to Fall 2018. The weather finally cooled down from a blistering summer and leaves on trees were falling. But things were just heating up in the Rustic Customs garage as Dustin Henson took his craftmanship full-time.
ustin was working as a Project Manager for a custom homebuilder and stumbled across a problem. A new build was nearly complete, and there was one piece missing to finish the project. A barn door. One week until home completion, but eight weeks for a barn door order to deliver. The math didn’t add up. Dustin had an idea. He could build the barn door faster and at a lower cost to save the day. And so it began – Rustic Customs, one part barn door, two parts Dustin’s enjoyment of woodworking and helping his community. Launching Rustic Customs to a full-time career took another 18 months of custom woodworking before Dustin found himself working daily as your local Providence Village craftsman. Scroll Rustic Custom’s website, and you will find something for everyone;
everything from engraved wooden spoons and cheese boards, to toy boxes, corn hole sets, furniture and of course, his famed barn doors. Rustic Customs makes a unique gift for just about anyone... family, friends and clients! It’s a social media world, and Dustin is living in it. He is also an Instagram Influencer. With 90% of his sales starting on the Facebook plaorm, his eye-catching videos and photos get aention. Tool industry companies regularly surprise Rustic Customs with all kinds of new toys to build the next can’t live without custom piece. DeWalt apparel, Empire Tools and Kapro Tools are a few of the companies who have Instagram Influencing deals with Rustic Customs. Dustin also makes time to give back to Providence Village and the surrounding communities. He is active in the 60 Feet 6 Foundation, Relay for Life, Operation Christmas Child and the local 380 Rotary Club. Dustin donated his time to build the newest Lile Free Libraries in
Providence Village and Cross Roads, where books are available to the community free of charge in an effort to promote the love of reading. It’s the world’s largest booksharing movement! You can see his Providence Village work at Stallings Park in the Heritage Landings at Providence Village HOA. His work with the 380 Rotary Club’s literacy program seeks to place his Lile Library creations across the 380 area. Wonder what’s up next for Rustic Customs? “Moving into a shop space is my number one goal,” says Dustin. His garage has been consumed with tools to design, engrave and finish orders. He loves perfecting his craft, and having his business so close means sometimes he sneaks back into the garage after a long day to do a lile more work on his newest project. Been eyeing that custom woodwork seen on designer home shows? Look no further…it’s available right HERE in Providence Village! No maer if you want to add a personal touch to your home or give a custom gift, you can find something at Rustic Customs to fit all budgets. The best part of working with Rustic Customs is, if you don’t see it, Dustin can custom make it!

The Heart of a Veteran by Christine Walker
I am a female Veteran, and I come from a long line of Military Veterans in my family. Both of my grandfathers served in the Army during WWII. My great-aunt Jonita Bonham was a flight nurse in the Air Force during WWII and the Korean War. She was also the only female during that me to receive the Disnguished Flying Cross, the highest honor available in the Air Force for her bravery during a plane crash in the Sea of Japan in 1950. My great-uncle Sam Walker, a Marine, died on the shores at Iwo Jima at the age of 19. My father was Air Force, my stepfather was Navy, my brother a Marine. My decision to join the Military at 18 and transion from civilian to Sailor was a natural one. I served in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman during Desert Storm at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps NAVHOSP. At the me, female Corpsmen did not serve in the field with Marines, so most of us were staoned in support services, usually at a Naval Hospital or clinic. However, I did have the privilege of taking care of Marines who were deployed to Iraq and returned home with “mysterious” illnesses. Almost 30 years later, I can sll see their faces, and I remember their stories. They made an indelible mark on my heart that will be with me for the rest of my life. Military life was never easy, but there isn’t much I would change about my me in service. It taught me some profound life lessons that I had the privilege to learn as a very young adult. As Veterans, we do not see ourselves as heroes, nor do we see ourselves as vicms of war. We willingly made a choice in life to take an oath to protect the freedoms afforded to us by our Constuon, to protect our families, and to protect our country. Notwithstanding, while we each have our own unique stories, perspecves, and polical affiliaon, the one thing that joins us together

is our heart for our country and a heart for each other. We live for our brothers and sisters who made the ulmate sacrifice, we embrace and encourage those who were wounded and le a piece of themselves on the balefield, and we encompass an unspoken comradery of understanding when we meet a fellow Veteran. For those who make it a point to say, “Thank you for your service,” whether Veteran or civilian, please know that your support means more to us than we can usually express in such a brief encounter. It is because of you that we served.

Taxpayers who haven’t yet checked their withholding this year should do so ASAP. All taxpayers can do this by using the new mobile-friendly Tax Withholding Estimator. This new tool can be used by workers, as well as retirees, self-employed individuals and other taxpayers. It’s a user-friendly step-by-step tool to help taxpayers effectively adjust the amount of income tax withheld from wages and pension payments. This helps ensure you are paying the right amount of tax as you earn it throughout the year. Using the tool to do a Paycheck Checkup can help taxpayers avoid an unexpected year-end tax bill and possibly a penalty when they file their 2019 tax return. Thanksgiving . . . in Providence Village CORNBREAD DRESSING Submitted by Joyce Vann
2 cans refrigerated biscuits - baked (cheapest canned biscuits you can buy) 1 pan cornbread (if you don’t have a favorite recipe, just use a packaged mix) 2 cups diced celery 2 cups diced onions 1 stick unsalted butter or margarine salt pepper poultry seasoning rubbed sage 3-4 eggs – beaten well turkey chicken broth Bake biscuits and cornbread a day or two before. Crumble both well, and store in Zip-Loc bag until ready to finish dressing. I also dice my celery and onion at the same time, and store in a Zip-Loc bag until ready to finish dressing. Day of baking: Preheat oven to 350F. Melt butter or margarine in a very large skillet or roaster oven. Sauté celery and onion in butter until soft. Add crumbled biscuits and cornbread. Add salt and pepper to taste (this will depend on how salty your broth is. I generally start with ½ tbsp and adjust as I taste.) Add poultry seasoning and rubbed sage. I start with 2 tbsp poultry seasoning and 1 tbsp rubbed sage and adjust if it needs more. Pour in enough broth to make the mixture “soupy,” about the consistency of brownie mix. After adjusting spices to taste, add the beaten eggs and mix well. Pour into baking dish, and bake 30-45 minutes, stirring midway through baking. Serves 6-8 people. CRANBERRY SAUCE Submitted by Lea Goin 1 small bag fresh cranberries 1/3 cup sugar Juice of one orange Pinch of salt

PURPLE SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE Submitted by Sina Tidwell 3-5 Stokes Purple® sweet potatoes ¼ cup butter ½ cup packed brown sugar 3 tbsp orange juice (no pulp preferred) 1 pinch of ground cinnamon (to taste) 1 package mini marshmallows Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Hannukah What is Hannukah? Or is it spelled Chanukah? Oy! There are as many tradions to Chanukah as there are ways to spell it. But what exactly is Hanukkah/ Chanukah/Hanukah? Chanukah comes from the Hebrew, ‘Chanuk’ which means to study or dedicate. Hence the Feast of Dedicaon or Chanukah. Long story… somewhat short; Chanukah was established by the Jews aer they defeated Anochus Epiphanes and took back control of the Temple. In observance of Torah, they had to re-dedicate the Temple and everything inside because it had been defiled by the slaughtering of pigs on the holy altar, and if you can recall from past Sunday school lessons… this was a BIG no-no. Part of this re-dedicaon was to light the Menorah inside the holiest place in the temple, but they only found enough oil to last 1 day. A “great miracle happened” … the oil burned for 8 days, allowing me for more to be produced. More fun facts about Chanukah: • A Chanukah menorah is called a Chanukiah. • Chanukah lasts 8 nights, but the Menorah has 9 candles. The middle candle is the “Shamash” or servant candle that lights the other eight. So two candles are lit the first night, three on the second night, four on the third and so on and so forth. • Foods fried in oil like Latke’s & donuts are a favorite holiday treat. • Some families celebrate by giving gis for 8 nights, usually with the “big” gi given on the last night. • The only place in the Bible Chanukah is found is in the New Testament in John 10:22. • Dreidle (like a top with 4 Hebrew leers on each side) is a fun game played at Chanukah.

THREE KINGS
Dia de Los Reyes, also known as Three Kings Day, is celebrated in Latin cultures where children receive the majority of their gifts from the Three Kings rather than Santa Claus at Christmas. The date marks the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas and commemorates the three wise men who traveled from afar, bearing gifts for the infant baby Jesus. Before going to bed, children leave their shoes out with a wish list on top. In the morning, their shoes are filled with gifts from the Three Kings. This holiday tradition is celebrated with Rosca de Reyes, or King’s Cake, a bread full of meaning. Rosca means wreath and Reyes means kings. The bread has an oval shape to symbolize a crown, with a small doll inside representing baby Jesus. The figure symbolizes the hiding of the infant Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Traditionally, roscas are decorated with dried fruits to symbolize the many jewels a crown would have. Tradition has it that the person who gets the slice with the doll inside must host the party for Dia de la Candelaria in February. “We celebrate Three Kings Day by leaving our shoes under the Christmas tree at night with a little bit of hay in them to feed to camels. When they arrive, the animals eat their food, and the three wise men leave gifts under the tree. We have Rosca de Reyes for breakfast with atole, open our presents and enjoy the day with the family.” ~ The Urquidez Family “For Three Kings, the children write letters to the wise men, roll them up, attach to a helium balloon and release into the sky. That evening, we eat Rosca de Reyes with hot chocolate, and each family member leaves a shoe under the tree. In the morning, it’s like Christmas again, with the kids running downstairs to see what gifts the 3 wise men left for them.” ~ The Herrera Family

Long Forgotten Traditions A very long time ago, when holidays were simple, families would make little projects together in the evenings leading up Christmas morning. Below are just a few long forgotten traditions: ❧ Make garland by stringing popcorn and cranberries on a string (Use a large needle and heavy thread). ❧ A fun family project is to make a countdown chain using strips of colored paper with a holiday message inside each one. Starting on December 1, take the bottom link off and read the message to the family. On Christmas day, read the last link.

1 medium onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 8oz pkgs sliced mushrooms, chopped Pinch ground nutmeg (optional) 1 tbsp soy sauce (sub tamari if necessary) 1/4 cup dry white wine (I used chardonnay) Freshly ground black pepper to taste Grease a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray and set aside. Place cashews in a bowl and cover with hot water. Set aside to soak for 30 minutes or overnight. (If you have a nutribullet or high speed blender, 10 minutes of soaking is fine.) Meanwhile, preheat oven to 475F. Thinly slice two of the onions, setting aside the other onion for later. Combined sliced onions with bread crumbs, flour and 3/4 tsp salt in a large bowl, tossing to combine. Be sure to separate each individual onion piece. Spread onions in an even layer on a baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray or lined with a Silipat. Spray once again with cooking spray. Bake for about 20 minutes, tossing halfway through. Watch carefully to make sure they don’t burn towards the end of cooking. Once onions are done, remove from oven and lower oven heat to 350F for casserole. Bring a large pot with two inches of water to a boil. Once boiling add green beans. Bring back to a boil (this may take a while) and cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes, or until tender. Drain and run

cold water over green beans to stop cooking. Set aside. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Chop remaining onion. Once hot, add to pan and cook for about five minutes before adding garlic and mushrooms. Cook for another ten minutes, stirring often. Add nutmeg, soy sauce, white wine, 1 1/2 tsp salt and pepper. (It will taste salty, that’s ok!) Simmer for about five minutes. Blend soaked cashews with almond milk in a blender or food processor (I used my nutribullet) until completely smooth and creamy. Set aside. Stir in cashew cream and 1/4 of the baked onions. Stir in cooked green beans. Spread mixture into prepared dish. Top with remaining baked onions. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes (if onions are on the crispier side, you can cover with foil for first half of cooking.) Serve hot! **To make this dish ahead of time, make the sauce and the green beans then store in separate containers in the fridge. The next day, bake the onions and combine everything per the recipe. PUMPKIN BREAD Submitted by Misty McNabb 3 cups flour 3 cups sugar 3 eggs 2 cups oil 1 can pumpkin (small) 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp nutmeg 1 tsp allspice 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt
Preheat oven to 400F. Mix dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another. Then mix together well. Bake 1 of 2 ways: Pour batter to first ring of 6 regular size coffee cans (great for decorating) – OR – Pour equally into 6 small loaf pans. Spray with Pam first or butter & flour the pans. Cook for approximately 40 minutes (depending on stove) or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. BUTTERMILK PECAN PIE Submitted by Melissa Keeney ½ cup butter 2 cups sugar 2 tsp vanilla 3 eggs 3 tbsp flour ¼ tsp salt 1 cup buttermilk 1 unbaked pie crust ½ c chopped pecans Preheat oven to 300F. Cream butter and sugar. Blend in vanilla. Add eggs one at a time. Combine flour and salt, and add a small amount at a time to butter/egg mixture. Add buttermilk. Sprinkle pecans on bottom of pie crust. Pour custard mixture over pecans. Bake for 1.5 hours or until knife inserted into pie comes out clean.

Winterizing Tips for Your Lawn
In most parts of the country, lawn grass goes dormant in the winter. However, lawn care doesn’t quite end there. Try these tricks to keep your yard healthy through the cold season. Fertilize Apply fertilizer with a spreader. Apply only the recommended amount. Too much fertilizer can burn your grass. Aerate the Lawn Provide some extra air for grass roots. Use a spade to take out spikes of soil across your lawn to make holes for planting seeds. If your lawn is large, rent a motorized or manual aerator. Spread Cool-Weather Grass Seed Purchase “cool season” or “cool weather” grass seed, such as most fescues. Sprinkle the seed over the lawn evenly so you won’t have clumps of grass later. Rake and Water the Lawn Drag a rake over the lawn to break up soil clumps and cover the seeds a bit. Water the lawn with the garden hose spray. Keep the soil moist, don’t let it dry out. Clean it Up It is extremely important not to leave debris, leaves or toys out on the lawn. These things can smother the grass, create disease conditions, and invite insects, mice and other damaging pests. Mowing Lower the height of your mower by a notch or two the last couple of times you mow. However, do not cut the grass so short that you scalp it, thus exposing the crown of the plant to extreme conditions. Winters can often be unpredictable and may put your lawn through some extreme conditions during the course of the season. Winterizing properly will help ensure a healthy lawn when Spring arrives! 22 - Providence Village Experience
WHAT TO CHECK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A ROOFER D’ S Y R! Here are the BIG 4 things you need to make sure of when choosing a roofer: 1. Is the company local? It’s going to be hard to have a company come check for warranty issues or leaks if they’re located far away. 2. Ask for references. You may know someone, who knows someone that has a 3rd cousin in the roofing business. That doesn’t necessarily make for a good option. Most reputable companies will be more than happy to provide references. 3. Insurance?! Yup, that’s important. There are a lot of companies working right now that do not have insurance. That’s seng YOU up for something bad happening. Ask for proof of insurance! 4. Are you going to be on top of your roof during replacement? Probably not...and if you are, do you know what materials are supposed to go on a roof? There is a lot more that goes into a quality roof than just the shingles. Ice and water shield, flashing, underlayment, and vents are just a few of the things some companies may be skipping out on or going cheap on. Ask for a list of materials for everything going on the roof, and ask for samples. Rob Vaughan

A Dog’s Tale ... I’ll be home for Christmas
By Sina Tidwell
her turkey. This moment was the beginning of what would become a tight bond between the two of them. Lilly found the queen-sized bed in Traci’s home on the first day. The soft, warm bed is where Lilly felt most comfortable. Hiding in the room where the bed was located became Lilly’s go-to in the beginning. This is the bed where she began eating from Mallory’s hand. Who would have guessed that the Lilly the community saw roaming the streets for years had a princess side to her?
Lilly & her “Hooman” In September 20, 2018, just as fall was setting in, Lilly began a new chapter in her life. On this special day, she would journey from the vet to her new foster home. Mutts & Mayhem, who organized, carried out and accomplished the successful capture and rescue of Lilly, arranged for her to go to Traci Glover’s house in Providence Village. Traci worked with the rescue to ensure Lilly’s safe transition from wandering the streets to a warm, loving home. The first day in her new home was filled with Mutts & Mayhem volunteers and others excited to see Lilly back in Providence Village. Eating was not on Lilly’s agenda, though, until the guests cleared out and her new surroundings quieted around the house. Traci’s daughter, Mallory, peacefully sat with Lilly and began hand-feeding
“Traci! You are going to kill me! Lilly got loose!” 24 - Providence Village Experience
Before Lilly’s capture on that fateful day in September 2018, the meals provided by neighbors Amy and Traci always had a special treat on top of the dog food. Chicken, often rotisserie style. As the weeks turned to months, boiled chicken became the norm for Lilly to have atop of her food bowl. This enticing treat helped create a routine for Lilly and the much-needed nourishment for a dog without a home. Traci now giggles about how much she and neighbor Amy spoiled Lilly when she was roaming free. Traci’s two other dogs, who were boarded during Lilly’s transition to the home, returned after a week away. Lilly bonded with Traci’s smaller dog, Beanie. Finding the two dogs cuddled together revealed Lilly’s loving spirit. Her new playmates accepted her into their home, but Lilly, the brand-new member of the pack, had new rules to learn. One proved to be a big surprise to her. Her new dog family didn’t get spoiled the same way she did while on the streets. Now that Lilly was in foster
care, the traditional chicken-topped meals were off the menu. When she got her first chickenfree bowl, she gave Traci and Mallory an awkward look, letting them know something was missing. Soon, Lilly’s standard of boiled chicken-topped food resumed and continues to this day. The first few months in Lilly’s new home were solitary. Heartworm treatment meant she could not run or get excited. Heartworms will damage the heart and lungs at a rapid pace if physical activity rises in a dog that is heartworm positive (American Heartworm Society, 2018). This required an inactive lifestyle, which didn’t aid in her adjustment. She was scared and would often stare at the wall. Traci recalled feeling sad that Lilly’s life on the streets of Providence Village caused her to act this way. It was clear that Lilly had undergone some kind of abuse, as certain sounds startled her, and she was wary of strangers. The rescue provided a leash and harness to keep Lilly safe outside. She wore it daily. It was feared that Lilly would escape again, and this was something Traci and many residents didn’t want to happen. Traci and her daughter took every precaution to ensure Lilly’s safety, including walking her in the backyard for potty breaks. There would be no jumping a fence, digging a hole or roaming the streets on Traci’s watch. What surprised her new foster family the most was how determined Lilly was to go back inside the house each time she went out. One of the first adjustments Lilly made in her new home was to walk upstairs and out on the balcony. It was there on the balcony that she would sit and watch people. This was no surprise to her foster family, as it was common to see Lilly sit between the houses of Providence Village and people watch; she would observe the adults, kids and other dogs go about their days when she was living on the streets. Such a simple act of sitting on the balcony brought her peace. Lilly was back to observe the happenings of the community once again.
A couple of months later, around Thanksgiving, Lilly jumped on the couch. This was a new development for Traci and Mallory. Traci recalls freezing in place and not wanting to move, out of shock and awe that Lilly was warming up to her life in the foster home. The spot on the couch became Lilly’s space, and she felt safe relaxing on the sofa. Lilly spent many years out in the cold, and it brought Traci and Mallory joy to have her warm and comfortable in the winter months. No worrying this year if Lilly would make it through a freezing night. Christmas time was upon the Glover home, and Lilly was opening up more and more each day. The photographs taken of Lilly under the Christmas tree showed her cuddled up, happy, content and safe. “She didn’t have to worry about anything,” said Traci, and that warmed the hearts of Lilly’s social media fans. Lilly found herself in a loving home for Christmas, one of the greatest miracles of all. She absorbed the delightful magic of the season, and by her comfort, showed the Glovers that she truly knew she was home for good. Many in the community loved Lilly, so when Traci needed to undergo outpatient surgery, a trusted neighbor and friend stepped up to help care for Lilly and Traci’s other dogs. One afternoon, while her friend was walking the dogs, Traci received a frantic call. “Traci! You are going to kill me! Lilly got loose!” her friend exclaimed in a panic. Only 5 months in, and Traci knew the community would be bothered if Lilly was free again. What neither Traci, nor her friend, expected was that after years of roaming Providence Village, this one-of-a-kind dog knew exactly where she was and where she was going. Lilly set herself free at the Ballpark in Creek Village near the corner of Cambridge and Boston Harbor. In the time it took Traci to get to her front door on Plymouth Drive, Lilly was already there, sitting on the front porch, patiently waiting. Home. Lilly was home! She knew exactly where her home was and wasted no time returning to her home, sweet home.
Lilly’s heart found her HOME! Continued on next page Providence Village Experience - 25
The dog that was once frightened and alone soon became a friendly social dog that wanted to play. Each passing day, Lilly became more accustomed to her new normal. Eventually, she went out to the backyard without a harness and faithfully returned to the door each time. She began meeting other dogs around Providence Village on her walks. Life on the streets was becoming a distant memory to both Lilly and the Glover family. Significant life changes emerged on the horizon. The Glover’s season living in Providence Village was coming to a close. It was July 2019, and time for Traci to sell her home, ultimately moving away from Providence Village. Mallory was accepted and preparing to attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Traci contacted Mutts & Mayhem, thinking that it was time for Lilly to find her permanent home. She felt finding a home in Providence Village for Lilly’s safety would be best. No matter how many months passed, the fear of Lilly getting loose made her reconsider if Lilly should stay in Providence Village. After all, it was a safe place she could survive until captured. However, that was not what Mutts & Mayhem had in mind. They felt Lilly had found her forever person and home with Mallory, a consideration Traci never expected on this journey. While Lilly would no longer live with Traci, she would get to see her often. Once her home on Plymouth Drive sold, Traci took up new roots in a city nearby. Mallory’s plans unfolded, and she moved to Dallas to pursue her law degree at SMU. Along went Lilly to her new neighborhood and life with her favorite person, Mallory. The queen-sized bed that Lilly grew so fond of moved with her to Dallas. It is where Lilly still enjoys all her meals as the princess of the household. Lilly spends her days by Mallory’s side as she studies when not attending classes. Trips to the local dog park to play with other neighborhood dogs is a favorite activity for Lilly. Just as it was in Providence Village, Lilly has shown Mallory that she knows the route home. Sometimes even pulling Mallory along to get home from the dog park. Lilly’s first microchip was placed in 2009. Traci reflects on the many years Lilly spent on the streets and is happy this senior dog is spending her golden years loving and being loved. The early years of Lilly’s life were challenging, and many loved her from afar. This sweet, mild-mannered dog, once the resident mascot of the Town, adjusted seamlessly to her home outside of Providence Village. Seeing Lilly today as the happy and content, instead of the once fearful, scared dog, is truly a transformation many only dreamed of happening. This previous proclaimed “free spirit” really only longed for a home to call her own. Last winter, Lilly was truly home for the holidays.

‘WUNDERBAR’ Bratwurst and sausage, same things with different names? Not really. “A Bratwurst is generally bigger and mild in flavor, where a sausage is smaller, but more powerful in flavor,” explains Klaus Dausmann, owner of The Crazy German. Going back to the days of his apprenticeship in Germany, Klaus’ dreams are coming true. He just launched his mobile food trailer, which offers authentic German food. Drawing on the recipes from his master, Klaus adds his own touch for some of the tastiest brats around! “My goal is to bring a lile bit of my true culture and authentic German food to Texas and the United States,” says Klaus. Though his slogan has a great play on words, touting “our sausages are the wurst,” they are actually some of the best that you will ever experience. Planning for the future, Klaus is working on a catering plan and menu, which is slated to be ready by mid-November. The yummy options will include German classics such as spätzel, knödel, sauerkraut, red cabbage, sauerbraten, rinder rouladen, schnitzel and more. The Gift
Of Good Health ‘Tis the season for giving. We tend to want to focus on others this time of year. We want to create memories, share decadent foods, give beautiful gifts, and spend time with the ones we love. Dr. Kat Bryan AT EASE CHIRO That’s a wonderful thing to do. However, don’t forget to think of yourself. Take time to engage in self-care. That word gets thrown around a lot, I know, but it doesn’t have to be an expensive spa day. One of the best ways to engage in self -care is to be mindful of your health and wellness. Adding chiropractic to your wellness plans can help deflect the less desirable side of the holidays. Many studies have shown that those who receive regular chiropractic care are less likely to be ill or get over illness faster, have fewer hospital visits, sustain fewer injuries, sleep beer, have less physical stress on their bodies and are able to handle stress more easily than those who do not receive regular chiropractic care. In addition to the beautiful meals and gifts we give, give your loved ones a healthier and happier version of you. Give yourself the gift of good health.

GO FOR IT! by Deanie Deal
What could possibly motivate a grandmother to pursue her dreams of singing and songwriting? I suppose the answer is in the question itself … A Dream! I spent the majority of my adult life raising kids and helping my husband build a drywall business. But music has always been a part of my life since I was a lile biy kid in a small town in Arkansas. Everybody in my family sings; it’s just what we do, but I wanted more. I wanted to write songs, so after my kids left the nest, I got a guitar, started taking lessons, and the lyrics…well, they came naturally. I just write about what I know. If there is any advice I can give to anyone who has a dream of being a songwriter or musician, it’s this, “Be responsible, but go for it!” Learn what you can, write what you know, and most of all, don’t do it for fame or fortune. Do it for the love of music!

Minimize Holiday Stress The hustle and bustle of the holiday season can rob the joy from some. Ever find yourself feeling stressed with a big to-do list that just seems to keep growing? Sian King of Pink Octopus Company suggests hiring a personal assistant to help decorate, wrap presents, reorganize the home or to run errands for food and gift shopping. “Don’t take on too much and create additional stress when you can hire a personal assistant service,” she says. “Enjoy the season and make memories fun!” Holidays can be stressful for pets too, especially when your plans separate you from them. Ever notice how their behavior changes when you start to pack your suitcase? Erin Balon at
Canine Cowboy explains, “To ease their stress, we recommend dropping your furry friends off for boarding before you begin packing. Additionally, to help them feel at home, you may want to include their favorite blanket and treats.” She goes on to say, “A kennel-free facility like Canine Cowboy can also help to reduce stress in pets. We mimic a homelike environment where dogs can sleep and play and never have to worry about being put in a kennel, thus reducing stress.”
Baking during the holidays is a time for bonding and memories. Cookies and fudge with the kids, goodies for Santa, pies with grandma…lots fun and love to be had by all. But with so much already going on this time of year, taking on too many baking projects can become overwhelming and stressful if not planned properly. Get organized with Kennel-Free shopping lists and stick to Picture/Video recipes you Updates know. “It’s always fun to new recipes, Staff on site day try but not always and night during the busy holiday season,” explains Karee Open 7 days a Dehtan, owner of week 7am-7pm Konfectionary. (closed for lunch 11:30-1:30) She also suggests planning out your shopping 2336 Oak Grove Lane, Aubrey, TX 76227 and baking days www.caninecowboy.com 940-305-9041 in advance and
bake in stages. “Many recipes can be done in stages over several days, such as making cookies…bake one day, decorate the next.” And don’t forget to have fun and create memories! “Kids love to help, so take advantage of the bonding time,” says Karee. However, if you don’t have the time to do all the baking yourself, reach out to your local baker to help alleviate stress. Just be sure you book far in advance since it’s a busy time of year. Calendars fill up fast! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Don’t let it drain you. Plan ahead and have fun. Years from now, it’s the memories that will be remembered, not what you baked or what you received. Cherish the reason for the season, whatever it means for you and yours, and enjoy!

DRY EYES and DISCOMFORT Just as cold weather can dry out skin and make it itchy and uncomfortable, it can do the same to your eyes. During the winter months, the air — outside and indoors — is typically dry.
•
Give your contacts a break.
•
Avoid rubbing your eyes. This can lead to inflammation, affect the quality of tears and cause painful corneal abrasions.
•
Wear sunglasses.
The lack of moisture makes the surface of the eyes drier and causes irritation, itching and discomfort. People who wear contact lenses or those with chronic allergies are especially likely to notice that their eyes feel dry and uncomfortable in the winter.
•
Use warm compresses to try soothing the eyes.
•
Use humidifiers at home.
Here are some easy tips you can incorporate into your winter routine to help alleviate dry eyes: •
Use artificial tears or eye drops. They can help keep the eye moistened.

Don’t Let the Flu Bring Holiday Blues It’s finally cooling down as the year comes to an end. However, it’s also that time of year when flu is in full force. Don’t let it spoil your holiday fun! Come see us for your annual flu vaccine. One of the best things to happen as time has passed is coverage for flu (and other) vaccines by insurance. We are seeing over fifty percent coverage and many with a zero copay. And if you do happen to come down with the flu, we have you covered on your prescription needs such as antiviral treatment, cough, nausea and other ailments. We also have a complete line of over-the-counter remedies for fever and offer other vaccines such as pneumonia, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), shingles, meningitis and others.
