NOTE FROM ME N ON BOATS & TH E FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

W

elcome to the 2019 Thingamajig Playwrights Festival. This is Thingamajig Theatre Company’s 3rd Festival! If you participated in the Festival last year, we are glad to have you back. If you are new to these events, we are so pleased you are joining us. Developing and workshopping new plays is a process, a very sacred process and a very sacred journey. Every playwright is different and each play in development requires different elements from the rehearsal process. This developmental environment presents a unique opportunity for a wonderful collaboration in which the writer is able to get whatever help they may need to further their story. During this year’s Festival, we will be working to hone and strengthen the pieces that are in residency. We look forward to you, the audience, seeing the progress each play makes. Since you are invited to the first reading and the last reading of each piece in development you can see the path the play took over its time in rehearsal. You can see the developmental arc. It is an amazing experience to bear witness to a play’s journey and to see how it can change, grow, shift and adjust over an incubation process. Each play will need something different from this experience because of where it is in the writer’s journey. Is it a first draft? A few drafts in? A few years in process? One piece may need a lot of rewrites and require the actors to work the play from scene to scene so they can find the story or the areas that need mining. Another piece maybe ready for staging to see how the play moves so the writer can ensure that what is in their mind and on the page is being successfully animated

and translates visually to the stage. Regardless of the needs of the plays, we are ready to be a part of the playwright’s journey in making their script the strongest possible. Journey is an appropriate word for the Festival; an act of traveling from one place to another. In this collaborative journey with the playwright, we hope that where we start is different than where we end. We hope the path is one we all can find a place on, as our participation is pivotal. During the journey, it is our responsibility, as an audience, to care for and nurture the play. We know there will be risks and challenges, but it is our job to protect it and help it find its own way. It takes a village to get a play to where it is going. We are embarking on the journey, together. Get on board.

M

en on Boats by Jaclyn Backhaus is a 10-man journey traversing the Green and Colorado Rivers from Wyoming to the Grand Canyon. The play is based on John Wesley Powell’s journal, published as The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons. It was the government’s first sanctioned expedition in 1869. Historically, the people/characters were all cisgender white males. Playwright Backhaus forces a glorious shift in perspective with a cast made up entirely of people who are not. So, get your satchel packed, put on your good boots, grab your oars and your boat because we have a big journey ahead. Don’t be scared to get wet. We’ve got places to discover, or so we think. — Melissa Firlit
