Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 - October 15 Each year on September 15 begins HHM, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. Take time to enjoy the Hispanic influence that is around you. There are many opportunities right here in Southeast Texas that provide unique and cultural experiences. Our area boasts more than just Mexican food, there’s Tico’s Cuban Café in Bridge City, Salsa Dancing at Cotton Creek Winery, concerts, church events, Spanish language business meetings, and more. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! “Like” SETX Family on Facebook Contact us by phone: (512)567-8068 or e-mail: SETXAdvertising@gmail.com

When Disaster Strikes by Mehgan Drake It happens all the time. People are going about their lives, minding their own business, and....BAM! Disaster strikes. It can look like many things: car wrecks, hurricanes, medical emergencies. However it manifests, I can guarantee it is going to happen, and when it does, it will flip your world upside down. So what do you do? We’ve been through medical emergencies of our own, as well as a few hurricanes, and here are some things I’ve learned along the way. 1.) Be Prepared Beforehand I’m not suggesting prepping for doomsday, but there are a few things to have in place to aid in case of an emergency. I suggest having a friend or relative lined up for child care in the event of something happening. Also, I coincidentally had a few frozen meals in the freezer when my husband was unexpectedly admitted into the hospital, and it was a relief to have homemade enchiladas instead of greasy fast 16 Psalms 78

food after long days of medical appointments when he returned home. One more thing to consider is cushioning your banking account if possible to help cover unforeseen expenses and

lost wages. Many financial experts recommend $1000 in an emergency fund. 2.) Triage, Assess, and Get Organized In the event of a sudden crisis, it is imperative to stop everything that isn’t necessary in order to keep your sanity and focus on the situation at hand. Play dates and basketball games aren’t important at this time. Even non essential medical appointments can be rescheduled for when you are out of survival mode. This is a time for the family to sacrifice and pull together for the sake of the whole family unit. Emergency rooms everywhere call this “triage”. This means to assign degrees of urgency to a situation. Take stock of the predicament with which you are faced and decide what is urgent and what isn’t. If it isn’t urgent--cut it out.

When in a disaster, you will be overwhelmed and exhausted. Your brain will rebel and decide to break down on you and not function properly. But, you can beat your brain at its own game. Keep a spiral notebook and a pen handy at all times and write down everything. Some things to include are: insurance information; medication and times given; allergies; who has your kids and when; who you talk to, when you spoke to them, and what they said; phone numbers, people called, dates and times, and the result of the phone call; etc. Armed with this information, it will be easy to reference what the plan is so that you

remember, as well as making sure treatment or services are efficiently handled by professionals. 3.) Let your tribe know what’s going on, and say YES to the help You need people to have success through hard times. During our most recent medical drama, we would have fallen to pieces if it weren’t for the outpouring of love shown to us by way of child and animal care, groceries, money, home goods, meals, prayers, and encouragement. We wouldn’t have had the help if people didn’t know our need, though. When someone says, “Do you need anything?” or “How can I help?”

Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

Don’t blow them off. Take them up on it. Be specific with what you need. You’re the only one who knows. They love you, and they want to help lighten your load. 4.) Take Care of Yourself You can’t pour from an empty cup. To persevere through difficult times and provide care to your family, ensure you are also taken care of physically and mentally. Sleep when you can to give your brain and body respite. Eat healthily and hydrate to fuel yourself forward, and eat some chocolate, pray, read, or talk to a friend to soothe your spirit. It may sound silly to even mention it, but bathe, wash your hair, and brush your teeth. The everyday things can slip through the cracks, but doing them will make you feel human.

5.) Do Normal Activities No, I’m not contradicting tip #2. As time goes on, things level off, houses are fixed, recovery is made. Little by little a new normal is found. It’s during this interim time between disaster and normal where healing takes place. It can be arduous, but plan something to break up the monotony and stress. Have a family game night, cook a themed meal together, have a sundae bar. These little celebrations feel like progress, and progress feels like victory. Disaster will strike at some point. We live in a fallen world, so it’s only a matter of time. It may make us despair, but it doesn’t have to defeat us. With these helpful hints you can flourish through the fiasco and come out the other side, ready to face anything. Guard Tech Takes prides in helpinG
