Eric A. DeWalt Alzafar Potentate Let there be Light July may have been dark but is certainly was not boring. The 145th Imperial Session was held in Nashville TN and Alzafar was represented well. Over 40 Nobles and Ladies traveled to Music City to Honky-Tonk their way down Broadway. The meetings were well attended, completions were all around and Fun and Fellowship was had by all as we planned for the future of our Fraternity. I would like to thank our 2019 Imperial Representatives: P.P. Stuart H. Simms, P.P Robert W. Hunt & Chief Rabban Marty Bartlett. As well as our Emeritus Representatives: P.P. Reese L. Harrison, Jr., P.P. Robert L. Jett and Daniel M. Hutchison III all who have a wealth of knowledge and represent Alzafar so well on the Imperial Level. I foresee in our near future, a Noble from Alzafar as a possible candidate for the Imperial Line. Wouldn’t that be impressive? Alzafar truly ROCKS. The Imperial Session went over the 4th of July holiday but that did not stop our Nobles back home from representing so strong in the Seguin Parade. All I can say is the turnout was impressive. Thank you, my Shrine Family. I have been elevated for this brief period in time, by you, to help steer this Fraternity, Philanthropy and Family into the future. I am doing what I love and that makes it all worth it. I believe a smile is contagious. As long as we dawn that Old Red Fez and constantly look for like-minded individuals, we will parade well into the future. Remember, we must always be looking for new members for our Blue Lodge and always be looking for new Shriners from our Blue Lodge. Always remember: membership, membership, membership. The dark month is behind us. This means our Shine is in full swing. Please support the members of your Divan as they lead the way. Marty with Circus for our Fraternity’s Future, Travis with Gala for our Philanthropy’s Future, Robert with Ceremonial and Masonic Picnic for our membership and Rick with our children’s festivities. Let there be light. Alzafar, as always, Suzy and I are so proud to serve you. We are blessed to call you family and we are humbled by the amount of love given to our Shine Children.

Thank You and God Bless

Hello Alzafar!! I hope you all have had a great summer thus far. It's still hard to believe the Alzafar Train has gotten us to the eighth month of the year already. Where has the time gone? Seems like just a few days ago we started this year off. Over the next months, Alzafar will be hosting a lot of different events. One that is coming up for the High Priest & Prophet to host is the Masonic Picnic and Chili Cook Off. The Masonic Picnic and Chili Cook Off is set for October 12th. I encourage all Shriners to come on out to Camp Alzafar for a fun filled day of getting back to our roots. We hope to see a lot of our shrine units out competing in our chili cook off hosted by Camp Alzafar. We are going to try and extend our hands to the lodges this year and try and get more lodge participation. We will be providing lunch, dinner, libations and entertainment. If you plan on attending any portion of the day, if you could please call the shrine office at 210-496-1625 and RSVP, that would be great. This will ensure we have enough food and drinks for everyone. We will have more information about the Masonic Picnic and Chili Cook Off soon. Come on out for a day to remember and bring your friends as well. You never know, they might enjoy it and want to become a Mason and then a Shriner. Lady Tiffany and I are still so excited about the position we have been elevated into and can't wait for the next opportunity to visit with each and every one of you. If there is something we can do to make things better or suggestions you may have, don't hesitate to stop us and let us know. Until we meet again, thank you.

Alzafar, having just returned from Imperial I am truly inspired by the direction of our organization. Both from a fraternal and a philanthropic approach. While in Nashville, I had the opportunity to attend a membership symposium. As a team, I felt that Alzafar is on track to achieve each of the goals that our leaders at imperial have set out for us. All we need is your continued support. Membership is what will drive our fraternity for the years to come and its up to each of us to promote ourselves and our organization to the public. This should be done in a manner which would entice everyone that sees us to want to join. If you have friends that have been asking about the work you do or the fun you have, invite them out to an event at the Shrine and let’s see if we can generate the same desire to serve, in them, that you all carry in you. Imperial session was an amazing atmosphere as it usually is. The difference this year as opposed to other years is that I was able to represent Alzafar on a state and national level. Our Imperial lady Alice Smith was appreciative for the gift (Alamo Flag) that Alzafar presented to her at the Texas breakfast. I was equally appreciative of the opportunity to present it to her. Those of us that serve our fraternity and philanthropy here in Texas are in great hands with Imperial Sir Jim Smith and Lady Alice, moving forward. Lastly, I was honored to participate in the Imperial Sessions throughout the week and witness first hand, the great deeds that our fine organization does for the community at large. Thank you to each of you for your continued support. I know we are headed in the right direction and I’m looking forward to what the future holds for Alzafar. Finally, our next OG Round Table will be July 23rd and September 24th at 7pm in the dining room at the Shrine. Everyone’s attendance is encouraged and highly recommended. The purpose of the Round Table is to come up with ideas to fuel our organization into the future. As members of Alzafar, you all have a choice and a voice and this is one of many avenues each of you can take, to make a difference. Don’t be the one who says “you know what you ought to do”! Be the one that says, “you know what you ought to do, and here’s some ideas to make it happen”! Until next time nobles. Respectfully, Rick Reyes III

you read this Achbar article, the roof has been repaired and the inside has been restored. Many thanks to the people that use the Lodge Building for their patience. Camp Alzafar Update: We hired a wonderful new Camp Caretaker at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, the Caretaker Cabin had too much damage inside and the Board needed to make a major decision. We obtained bids to restore the cabin. We looked at switching rooms with the Club House and creating a large new club house where the caretaker’s cabin was located. We even explored the idea of demolishing the cabin and adding a prefab unit in its place. Nobody ever said being on the Divan was going to be easy. On a Personal note: God created a patient woman in my wife Lisa or today she is known as Nana by our grandson. On August 18th we will celebrate 40 years of marriage. Lisa retired in 2008 and loves to spend her time Shooting Pool. Her goal is simple, get her many pool leagues qualified to play in the National Tournament. As you know, I spend my time with the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Shrine. We both support each other's interest. So what is the secret to 40 years of marriage? Marry your Best Friend. Come out and join us at the next event or Shrine Parade and find out why I say “Alzafar Rocks”!

DIRECTORS STAFF By: Miguel Inclan The Alzafar Directors Staff is preparing for the 2019 Ceremonial to be held on August 10th. We highly encourage all members who have not traveled through the Hot Sands to join us on this momentous occasion as we welcome new Nobles into our fraternity. We announced the winners of our Gun Raffle at the Camp Alzafar 4th of July celebration. The Directors Staff thanks everyone who participated in our fundraiser. The Kendall County Fair Parade will be held on August 31st in Boerne with an 8am lineup and a 10am step-off. Parades are always a great time and place to have some fun and display the greatness of our camaraderie and brotherhood

THE DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS By: Richard Wallace The Alzafar Drum and Bugle Corps again won the TSDCA Drum Corps Stand Still Competition at TSA in Wichita Falls. They performed “The Texas Aggie War Hymn, Texas Fight, and God Bless America”, “St. Lois Blues March”, and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Nobles who participated were Emilio Casarez, Bonnie Verzosa, Jim Wells, Richard Wallace, Steve Nail, and Robert Packer. The performance earned the Corps a First Place Trophy in Stand Still. We performed outside the Market Place and received many complements for shoppers and vendors alike. We are always looking for more musicians. Currently we are performing on brass instruments that are played in the band; Bb trumpets, Bb marching French horns, marching trombones, marching baritones, etc. We do have instruments that we can lend to you. We need low brass and percussion players. We are also need percussionists and we have drums for you to play. We are a very low-pressure organization in terms of expectations and very flexible concerning time commitment. Thursday evening practices in Room 8 start at 7:30pm and end at 9:00pm. If you have any questions, please call Richard Wallace at 210-219-6861 or email at rfwall@swbell.net. Come on out and join us!

2019 TSA

NEMNUF By: Jon Strandlie WOW! Is it August already?!? It must be as it feels like 100 everyday. What an eventful June & July we had as a Shrine and more specifically as a unit. We started June at TSA by taking home some hardware by placing 3rd in makeup & costume. Thank you to Garrett (Popp-E), Carlos (B-Cuz) and Paul (Wrong Way) for your presence at TSA. Paul filled in valiantly for me as a judge. Special thanks goes to my Lady, Nancy, as that week was especially tough. We were in 4 cities in 5 days. In July we had a strong showing of clowns in Seguin to celebrate our Nation’s birthday and we were blessed with the President of ISCA speaking at our meeting on the 8th. A special thanks to our stellar 2nd VP Mike (Tiddlywinks) Long for hosting Dizzy while he was in San Antonio. For any clowns that are reading this if you haven’t registered for ISCA Mid-Winter to compete on an International level yet, then do it pronto! Finally, according to Wikipedia, August is Psoriasis Awareness month. Soooooo……be look out for red, dry, itchy skin.

ALZAFAR ROD & GUN CLUB By: Craig Noyes Hello all. At the August 2019 meeting, we had a presentation by Texas Parks & Wildlife that was very informative. They spoke about the rules and regulations for the upcoming Hunting Season. For the dove hunters in the Shrine, the Rod & Gun Club will have our Annual Dove Hunt at the Shawn Williams Ranch in Kennedy on the opening day in September. There will be clay target shooting, the dove hunt, and a Brisket meal prepared by Shawn Williams that will be served. Please thank Shawn for his Hospitality. The event is open to all Shriners so, please come a join us. Maps were given out at the meeting or members can contact President Barnes or Shawn Williams about getting there. I finally made a trip to the coast to stock up on Shrimp and Red Fish and we stayed at the Inn at Fulton Harbor and had a really great time. The Inn and Charlotte Plummer’s Restaurant are owned by the same family and the service and hospitality were great. The Inn has also been renovated recently due to the Hurricane and I asked about and got information for the club on having the coast trip there. You can even

do a Dolphin Watch tour right off the front door at Fulton Harbor. I would also like to remind everyone that the Rod & Gun Club is open to all Shriners and if you are not doing anything on the first Sunday of the month please come and join us in the Roustabout Room at 12:00 noon. Have a Bloody Mary and some fun and fellowship. You won’t be disappointed. That is all I have to offer for the good of the order so I will say “Thank You all and may there be many fish on your stringer”.
