What do we do do with proceeds from Austin Pride?

Austin Pride donates proceeds raised from the annual Austin Pride celebrations, via the Austin PRIDE Cares Program, to non-profits that have a direct impact in the daily lives of the LGBTQ community.

Since we started the Austin PRIDE Cares Program in 2011, we have donated over $150,000 back to the community.

Proceeds from the festival, sponsorship and drink tickets are given directly to the community after expenses are paid for Pride.

Letter From the Pride Board When the board chose the theme of Boogie Wonderland, we really wanted to have fun. Boogie Wonderland brings thoughts of the 1970s, disco, and love.

A time in our history where being gay was being celebrated for the first time.

There was much to celebrate. Our community had survived concentration camps, and an active campaign by the United States government to find and out gays and lesbians in the federal government. The years of lying and secrecy about being gay had receeded. The major cities on each coast were throwing Gay Day parades to mark the 1969 Stonewall Riots, and the parades were quickly turning into the modern day Pride celebrations they are today. The party was fueled by disco and free love, the tangible symbols of our long awaited liberation.

There was no hint of the new holocaust that would come in the form of a plague, and a decade of government neglect under two conservative presidents who tacitly thought that with the AIDS crises we as a community of “degenerates” were reaping what we’d sown.

They say history is a pendulum, constantly swinging to find its balance. There are great highs and great lows. Today the LGBTQ community enjoys unprecedented freedoms. We’ve served openly in the armed forces since 2011, we’ve been able to marry since 2015, and now even the plague is kept at bay with the advent of PrEp and TaSP. However, the pendulum always swings the other way, and we are still facing challenges. Once again, we have a government dominated by conservatives determined to hold onto their privilege and send us back into bars like the Stonewall: places that were hidden, boarded over and routinely raided and brutalized by the police. Even today we can still be fired or denied housing for being LGBTQ in most states.

Being LGBTQ isn’t a protected class in national Hate Crime legislation. Our trans brothers and sisters, especially those of color, are being killed at alarming rates, with little to no news coverage and they are also the target of a new military ban.

That’s why Pride is still necessary, and MUST be celebrated. As a community we have accomplished so much in a relatively short amount of time. We should celebrate our community and its diversity. We are one of the few communities that cross lines of race, religion and social status. We have every right to celebrate being who we are, our true selves. Let us remember that even from the beginning the goal of the marches that spawned today's celebrations was to ensure that LGBTQ people were seen, that we were heard, and that we knew we were not alone. So we the Austin Pride Board invite you to enjoy this year’s celebration. Boogie, Dance, Get Down and laugh and love. Today YOU are seen, YOU are heard, YOu are not alone.

STONEWALL CELEBRATION South Steps Of The Capitol june 12th, 2019

By Steven Bitner and Dean Arms For the 9th consecutive year, the Austin Pride Board of Directors, alongside the Austin Queer community, gathered on the steps of the Texas State Capitol on June 12, 2019. We gathered to commemorate and honor the Stonewall Riots, the demonstrations that sparked the modern gay rights movement 50 years ago, on June 28, 1969. The event was attended by a crowd of at least 100. The Austin Gay Men’s Chorus opened the ceremony and later sang a touching tribute to the victims of the 2016 Pulse masacre. The evening’s events included performances by 2019 Austin Pride pageant winners: Brandi Williams, Adam Stone, Jack Rabid and 2018 Ms. Austin Pride, Kelly Kline. In contrast to previous years, the board invited a panel of 9 people from various age groups and queer identities from Austin’s LGBTQIA community. This discussion, moderated by KVUE’s Juan Rodriguez, was centered on the impact of the Stonewall Riots, 50 years later and how those effects changed our community. Questions also sought to answer several questions about how different LGBTQIA communities and identities see the current climate today, and the direction of the Queer Rights Movement going forward.

From the panel: Juan Benitez works with The Q Austin and AIDS Services of Austin where he develops campaigns, events, and other initiatives to raise awareness for LGBTQ identities and the intersection of sexual health. His passion lies in marketing in the sexual health sector and visibility for Dreamers within the Queer movement.

Toby Johnson is a former monk, turned gay activist, turned psychotherapist, turned author, and novelist turned gay bookstore owner, turned editor and publisher. He and his partner, now husband, of 35 years, Kip Dollar, ran Liberty Books, the lesbian/gay community bookstore in Austin in the 1990s. He is now on the Steering Committee of the Austin LGBT Coalition on Aging.

Jessica Soukup is on the board of the Transgender Education of Texas, Chair of Queer Women in Leadership, an Admin for the intersectional feminist Facebook Group Pantsuit Austin, and an Austin Pride Outreach Co-Chair. She speaks frequently at Texas State University and around Central Texas on Trans rights, LGBTQiA+ Inclusion, and womxn's empowerment.

Charles Curry enjoyed a thirty year career in city government, after which he spent fifteen years working with city, county, and state governments around the country as a consultant on performance management. Now retired Charles is past President of Austin Prime Timers, chair of the Austin LGBT Coalition on Aging, a Board member of AustinUP and serves on the City’s LGBTQ Quality of Life Commission.

Sissi Yado is the Texas Senior Field Manager for the Human Rights Campaign.

A native of the Rio Grande Valley, they moved to Austin to continue the lifetime mission of organizing and empowering people to take action and be civically engaged in the pursuit of full LGBTQiA+ equality. They have been doing this kind of work for over 8 years.

Suzy Shelor works closely with civil rights activists around the state and around the country, including PRIDE, HRC, Equality Texas, and the Montrose Center in Houston. Today, Suzy can be found on KOOP, where she is a frequent guest on Rag Radio, and co-hosts segments on People United, discussing queer local and national issues.

Sheldon Darnell is a community organizer, advocate, and activists through and through operating from the intersection of a black, queer, . Currently, he serves as the President of Austin Black Pride, where he and his team curate events for Austin’s Queer and Trans communities with a focus on creating culturally specific programming for Black LGBT+ people to exist comfortably and unapologetically.

Ash West got her start in organizing as one of the founding members of a Gay Straight Alliance in high school and is now one of the core organizers for Queer Bomb. She helps out with the Rainbow Patrol when she’s able and strives to be more involved as we continue our ongoing fight for equality not only for the queer community but also for the numerous others that are under attack as well.

Nico Ramsey is a community organizer, Leadership Austin Alum, a Director on the boards of the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce and The Dog Alliance, serves as a co-chair for the Austin Human Rights Campaign Steering Committee and is a member of the AIDS Services of Austin development committee. Above all else, Nico is passionate about inspiring civic engagement among millennials and developing/empowering the next wave of community leaders.

The Stonewall Inn

and the Beginning of the

Gay Rights Movement

The Stonewall Inn was opened in 1967 by Mafioso Fat Tony Lauria as a “private” gay club—one of the few in Greenwich Village where patrons could dance. For the protection of its patrons the front windows were painted black and boarded over. Gay bars often operated as “private” clubs to circumvent the New York State Liquor Authority regulation that prohibited gay people from being served alcoholic beverages, because LGBT people were then considered delinquents.

In fact, The Stonewall was routinley raided because the presence of gay people was considered de facto disorderly conduct. The police would arrest patrons and managers, impound the cash register and alcohol, and padlock the front door.

Management typically ribed the police, Mafia, and State Liquor Authority officials for protection, so they were tipped off in advance of an imminent raid and would sometimes turn up the lights to warn patrons to stop any open displays of affection or slow dancing, which could risk arrest.

Despite the risks, The Stonewall Inn drew a diverse, young clientele, although only a small number of lesbians. Some patrons dressed in various forms of drag, including “scare drag,”. There were also people who wore business attire or jeans and flannel shirts. As Stonewall veteran Martin Boyce once said, “Stonewall was like Noah’s ark. There was two of everything.”

To get in, you had to get past a bouncer, pay an entry fee ($1 on weekdays and $3 on weekends), and sign a club register. It was common for people to sign in with joke names such as Judy Garland or Donald Duck. Leaving your real name could spell disaster as the mere suspicion of homosexuality carried the risk of job loss, home loss and financial ruin.

The confrontations with the police unfolded over the course of six nights, beginning in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 and lasting until July 1, 1969. The most intense clashes occurring on the first and sixth nights. Accounts vary, but according to eyewitnesses the first night brought out five to six hundred people, the second night about two thousand, and the sixth and final night five hundred to a thousand. The third and fourth nights were relatively quiet.

Surprisingly, there were no fatalities among the rioters or the police.

The Stonewall Inn went out of business shortly after the uprising and was leased as two separate spaces to a number of different businesses over the years. The current manage- ment bought the bar in 2006 and have operated it as the Stonewall Inn ever since.

goes to nyc world pride and stonewall50 By Steven Bitner A few minutes past noon on Sunday, June 30, a group of 23 Austin Pride Board members, their spouses, partners and various friends stepped onto 5th Avenue at 27th Street and took their place behind the Stonewall Inn float in the 50th annual Pride March in New York City.

Austin Pride attended the World Pride and Stonewall 50 celebrations in New York from June 27th to June 30th as proud members of InterPride.

InterPride is a coalition of Pride organizations from all over the world whose responsibilities include hosting World Pride every two years. InterPride also provides a way for various pride organizations around the world to network and coordinate.

Sunday’s march, reminiscent of the organized protest down Christopher Street was first held in 1970 to mark the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, was the culmination of a weeklong celebration marking World Pride and the Stonewall Uprising’s 50th Anniversary. During the week, events were held all over the city. Board members also attended the Stonewall 50 Rally on Friday evening. The Rally was held at the intersection of Christopher and Gay Streets and drew presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, motivational Speaker Harnaam Kaur and people who particiapted in and organized directly after the Stonewall Riots fifty years ago. This was certainly a cause for celebration. The LGBTQIA civil rights movement has accomplished things that weren’t even on the minds of those original rioters (like marriage equality).

However, speakers and organizers were quick to remind the crowd that “Progress is earned, it is not given”. We, as a community, are facing threats from current conservative lawmakers (and the President himself) who want to take us “even further back than 1969”.

The bricks, bottles and high heels that were said to have flown through the air on that hot night 50 years ago didn’t stop there. They kept going. They flew through disco and the free love of the 70s. They were talismans of better days in the AIDS and fear-ridden 80s and 90s. Today, those bricks, bottles and heels are reminders that complacency can be dangerous. They also serve as a reminder and a legacy for when we have to fight again.

The Divine Dance

of Abundance

By Reppy Andrews A friend said to me recently, “I believe in abundance.” And I've been thinking about that today as I worry about money, about my health, whether so and so will call me back. What does that mean, to 'believe in abundance?' To me, it means that the universe will always provide just what I need at the exact time it is needed, and so worry is wasted energy. When the dreaded “future” shows up, it'll just be NOW, because that's all we ever have, plus WE'LL BE THERE to handle whatever is being demanded of us. Where else could we be but in ourselves with all our resources and awareness, in the present moment, ready to respond to whatever is happening? Abundance also means that there's enough of everything to go around, plenty for everyone...plenty of money, plenty of joy, plenty of love, plenty of time.

Most of us don't live in that world, we live in a world of scarcity, where there isn't enough of anything and we are constantly being shortchanged. Plenty is the opposite of greed and hoarding. We don't need to hoard ourself away for “the future.” The future is a concept that doesn't exist.

Just recently surviving breast cancer did that for me (I'm all healed and cured). It woke me up and said, “You can't wait anymore to do the work you came to do in the world. This is your chance to live courageously and authentically in the now.” It made me realize that we're all living on borrowed time (sorry for the cliche). We all have a terminal illness called “being alive” and nobody is guaranteed anything.

But if we live in abundance, we are taking full advantage of each precious, present moment, and experiencing it fully, so it's not lost in the vast shuffle of moments we didn't live because we were worried about future moments or regretting and feeling bad about past moments. We don't need to hoard things or people unless we are afraid that the next time we need something, it will not be there. But abundance means trusting that it WILL be there, and lots of it, easily procured, not scarce.

There's a cosmic energetic exchange in the universe, and abundance means having faith that you are an integral part of that exchange, and that all you have to do is open your heart, letting the abundance and and love flow in. There IS enough, you ARE enough, the universe will provide you with whatever you require in the moment when the moment arises. Worry is scarcity, peace of mind is abundance. When we believe in abundance, even our own self-esteem is affected. If we are abundant and sufficient, aren't lacking, and are enough, our negative self-talk doesn't stand a chance.

For instance, if you start invalidating yourself, beating yourself up, or thinking badly of yourself, bring yourself right back to supportive messages of abundance. For instance: “I am enough.” “I am okay exactly as I am.” “I didn't do anything wrong.” “My feelings are appropriate and I have a right to them.” “I trust that I am loved more than I can possibly imagine.” “I am allowed to speak my truth.” "I am never lonely, as I am always connected to others."

Abundance also translates to our relationships with the people in our lives. If we saw others as whole, complete, sufficient, and capable human beings, instead of someone who is flawed, or wrong in some way, how would that change the way we look at them, the way we interact with them? How could that empower them, how could that empower ourselves? If we could shift our paradigm to abundance instead of scarcity, just think of all the ways that would contribute to our well-being and the well-being of those around us.

I am committed to expanding my ability to live in abundance. It seems to me to be the only sane way to live, the only way to be healthy and survive. The more we cultivate an abundant spirit and open the space of abundance in our day to day, the more we create possibility in our circumstances, and the richer and more fulfilling each moment becomes. We are freed up to experience and respond to each situation appropriately instead of the knee-jerk reactions of scarcity. Abundance connects all the dots. Abundance means that there is enough of everything and especially, enough of you.

The skate nights were a great way for families and younger members of Austin’s LGBT community to come out, see and be seen in a family friendly environment. Each night was also attended by 300-400 people.

What was appealing about combining all the GSAs? When I look at the world, and I see all the people successfully producing positive social change, I see how much collaboration is involved. While we may have great ideas on our own, we can do so much more when we come together and learn, grow, and change. Additionally, I realized that my school’s GSA was rather limited in what we were able to do because we lacked membership, money and resources. I know many other schools have similar issues, so I hoped that combining the GSAs would allow all of us to work together and accomplish more.

How successful have you been so far?

We’ve been quite successful! Since this group has come together, I feel like I’m part of a larger community and support network, and I think other students feel the same way.

We’ve also been involved in various activities and initiatives in Central Texas, including the approval of a comprehensive sex education curriculum in Austin ISD, the creation of the Stories and Numbers project with the Texas GSA Network and UT Austin, Out Youth Prom, school-affiliated LGBTQ+ dances, and the Austin Pride Parade!

What are your future plans or summer plans?

This summer, we’re excited to march in the Austin Pride Parade! We also hope to attend freshman orientations in Austin-area schools to raise awareness of the Coalition, and to support schools with small GSAs who may not be able to make it to these events. We’re also working on curating more resources for LGBTQ+ students.

Right now, I’m putting together a resource guide that has tips to help queer students navigate high school traditions like homecoming, prom, senior portraits, and graduation, as well as the transition out of high school into college, career, military, or another path. We also hope to bring speakers to coalition meetings, host events, and form groups to push for more support for our community from our schools.

What are some challenges you are facing?

Though things have gone pretty well so far, finding a structure for the organization has been rather challenging. Right now, we’re kind of an amorphous group of people, so we’ve been strategizing the best way to move forward, whether it be incorporating the coalition as a 501c3 non-profit or some other approach. We’re trying to find the best approach to fundraising as well. Right now, the individual schools in the Coalition each have some money, and are able to fundraise within their own clubs, but it’s been challenging to find funding sources for Coalition activities, so that will be something we continue to work on in the future.

Elle Smith is a student at Cedar Ridge High School in Round Rock. In the spring, she and other student-led GSA organizations in the Austin Area formed a coalition. The group met monthly from February to May. Austin Pride Guide
