Spot a stroke F.A.S.T.:

Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

- Face Drooping Does one side of the face droop or is it numb?

Ask the person to smile.

DISCOMFORT IN OTHER AREAS OF THE UPPER BODY

- Arm Weakness Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

SHORTNESS OF BREATH

- Speech Difficulty Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “the sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?

By: Benjamin Treviño As Morado’s Restaurant owner Edward Rodriguez surveys his mid-morning breakfast crowd, he begins to identify each person by name. Some he has known for years, others he met just that day.

In each case, however, Edward or a member his family will take the time to not only greet their customers, but to engage them as well.

“I’ll go say hi to somebody here, or somebody over there, and whenever I can, I go sit down and talk for a few minutes,” said Rodriguez. “That’s how we gain the respect of all our customers, by treating everyone as if they were a personal friend or family member.

That’s how we gain their admiration.”

Rodriguez’s personal attention to detail has been a cornerstone of his business model ever since he founded Morado’s Restaurant. It began when Rodriguez purchased an established diner in downtown McAllen in January, 1993.

After seven years in its downtown location, Rodriguez moved Morado’s to its present venue at 1610 N. 23rd St. From the outset, Rodriguez was determined to put his signature touch on everything, including the restaurant’s name, the management, and the recipes which helped him earn this year’s selection as The Monitor’s Reader’s Choice for Best Breakfast in

The “Best Breakfast” award is not the first time Morado’s restaurant has been recognized for its achievements. In 1996, the US Small Business Administration chose Rodriguez as Restauranteur of the Year and Morado’s is listed in Texas Monthly Magazine as one of the best places to eat in the Lone Star State. Rodriguez says even though such accolades indicate he’s doing something right, he continues to look for ways to improve his recipes and his service in order to encourage customers to keep coming back.

“I’ve always had my own recipes and my own ideas,” said Rodriguez. “My wife had some recipes from her mom and her dad was also a big-time cook. We both grew up in homes where the kitchen was one of the most important rooms in the house. People from all over say the food is delicious.

They just taste the food and they enjoy the heck out of it.”

Morado’s has become a gathering

place for families, business meetings, school outings, and various civic organizations. A large window to the kitchen allows diners to watch the cooks making fresh tortillas and other items on the menu.

The restaurant also has seven large-screen televisions, allowing diners to catch up on the news, or watch their favorite sporting event.

One of the more-common topics of discussion, however, is the Morado’s Restaurant name. No one in the family is named Morado, leaving many to wonder how the mon-

iker came about. Rodriguez says “Morado” is a nickname he was given way back in high school, when he got his first job helping a businessman move merchandise from an old grocery store to a new location across the street.

“I was hired on the spot and I was wearing my street clothes,” recalled Rodriguez. “I had on black pants and a purple shirt. One of the managers couldn’t remember my name so he just called me ‘Morado’ and the nickname stuck. I

“I enjoy the praise and honor that our customers have shown us, but there’s still room to do better,” said Rodriguez. “This will help us and enable us to better ourselves.
