A Word From The Mayor Hello Providence Village, Back-to-school is always an exciting time for our community. A lot of children will be walking to our great elementary schools in town, and I hope everyone will show extra caution driving in school zones or near crosswalks. The superintendents from the DISD and AISD happily agreed to share a message for the parents and students. From Dr. Jamie Wilson, Denton ISD: “In just a few weeks, our families will return for another school year. Our teachers have been working on the latest instructional strategies to engage our students and techniques to create a safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for them. As the school year approaches, please check the DISD website (www.dentonisd.org) for the latest school information. Lastly, we are proud to work closely with Aubrey ISD to ensure all children of Providence Village have access to a fantastic education. Welcome back!”

FLU SEASON!

Steve Coomes, Owner & Pharmacist

We are already over half way through the year! Fall is just around the corner, and with that goes back-to-school, cooler temps and the beginning of flu season. The recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to get vaccinated for seasonal flu as soon as vaccines are available. There has been a variety of timing for the start of vaccination due to approval and manufacturing issues, but generally speaking, we begin around the first of September. The flu vaccine formula is chosen based on what the anticipated virus will be that year, which is the reason for yearly vaccination. The newest vaccines have four different viral components and are thus referred to as quadrivalent. There are some differences in the way some are made, with the newest being recombinant to avert any chance of sensitivity due to egg allergy, even though this allergy has been removed from vaccines derived in eggs. This article is not comprehensive on this topic, but if you have any questions please call the pharmacy. One of the best things to happen as time has passed, is coverage for flu (and other) vaccines by insurance. We are seeing over fifty percent coverage and many with a zero copay. Keep in mind that even if not covered, the small amount for a vaccine out of pocket far outweighs the misery and cost associated with flu. We also offer other vaccines such as pneumonia, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), shingles, meningitis and others. Please call for specifics and coverage. And if you do happen to come down with the flu, we have you covered on your prescription needs such as antiviral treatment, cough, nausea and other symptoms. We also have a complete line of over the counter remedies for fever, etc. Keep in mind that we deliver prescriptions to Providence Village and the entire Aubrey area FREE of charge in case you or a family member feels too bad to get out. This delivery service is weekdays after 5pm year-round! We truly care about you at Aubrey Pharmacy! We look forward to taking care of your healthcare needs!

Juana Salsa?

BUSINESS PROFILE

Taco ‘bout a legacy!

Step up to the orange colored Taco Bandits food truck and you immediately notice the passion Carlos and Lisa Valenzuela, owners and Providence Village residents, have for the community and serving people. Look beyond the orange exterior and catch a glimpse of how this taco passion began with the legacy of Juanita Valenzuela, Carlos’ mother. To explore the inspiration of the Taco Bandits is to learn that it is the Valenzuela’s family destiny.

J

uanita “Juana” Valenzuela passed away in 2007, leaving her recipes and passion for serving food imprinted on the hearts of her family. The Taco Bandits menu shares Juana’s recipes from salsa to taco, and her memory is honored on the side of the truck. “As for me and my truck, we will serve tacos Juana 3:16” is a nod to Juana’s dream to open a Taco Truck. Carlos and Lisa learned about Juana’s taco truck dream after taking the plunge to launch the food truck last year. The journey to a taco truck was “a giant leap of faith to open the business,” says Lisa. Juana’s legacy, coupled with building a legacy for Carlos and Lisa’s family, hasn’t been easy. The road to tacos has been paved with many challenges. The generator blew up, floors were replaced, and the point of sale system went down, but as Lisa says, “Mind over matter. God hadn’t brought us this far to shut us down.” Sacrifices of time with family and friends to build the Taco Bandit business, as well as financial sacrifices, were some of the many obstacles Carlos and Lisa faced, but the Valenzuelas carried on serving, surprising and delighting customers. It has brought the family closer, as Carlos described how his son stepped in to help. “I was so amazed and so impressed when he worked ‘flawlessly’ at the Providence HOA Fourth of July celebration events,” Carlos fondly recalled.

“I know we are meant for great things,” Lisa says with a smile, “going from nothing to something.” The couple enjoys seeing how much capacity they can achieve together. When asked what it’s like to work with your spouse, the Valenzuelas laugh. They agree their business relationship is a ying-yang balance and affectionately speak of how they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. The Taco Bandit business has big plans to grow, serve the community and give back. “It is a passion!” Carlos says proudly.

menu is big on taste with homemade salsa options to spice it up. The iconic orange taco truck from Providence Village rolls down the street with a huge helping of legacy, destiny and passion. Next time you see the Taco Bandits truck, experience the Valenzuela’s family hospitality that comes along with every order, in and around the Providence Village area.

What makes Taco Bandits different from other taco trucks? These aren’t your average street tacos. “Nobody does just breakfast. But we do, and that sets us apart from other food trucks,” says Carlos. “We sell just breakfast and nothing else.” The heart of the menu is breakfast tacos served on warm flour or corn tortilla. Invest in Yourself Instead of Spending Use Your Tax Refund to Build Credit

What do you plan to do with your tax refund? Planning to take a vacaon, buy a new phone or computer? You might want to reconsider using it to build your credit. Credit building doesn’t sound as nice as relaxing in the mountains or swimming in the ocean, but the long-term benefits will go a long way! If your credit score is suffering because your debt load is high, use your refund to pay down all debts to less than 30% of your credit limit, and apply any le-over refund money toward the highest interest rate debt. The biggest factor in calculang a credit score is on-me payments. Consider placing your refund in an emergency fund for those mes when you might need a lile extra to make sure those payments are on me. Managing your credit is oen overlooked unl you want to apply for a loan. It is frustrang and harder to clean up bad credit than it is to monitor and manage it regularly. Set up a realisc budget and control spending; don’t waste your hard work by going on a spending-spree or forgeng to pay bills. It is very easy to ruin credit. Just as crical as balancing your bank account, make sure you are monitoring your credit. Linda Bullwinkle Enrolled Agent

NEW SCHOOL YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

For kids, the start of a new school year is like New Year’s Eve; a chance to start fresh and set intentions for the year ahead. It’s a time to reboot, make new friends, reconnect with old ones, get new clothes and find new opportunities to fuel their passions. Parents can guide their children to have a successful school year by encouraging them to set and accomplish their goals, better known as School Year’s Resolutions! Whether they want to join the math club, improve their art skills, or just make the bus on time every day, here are some tips to help kids achieve their goals this year. Record school year’s resolutions. Take the time to sit down and chat with your children about what they hope to accomplish in the new school year and how they envision getting there. This is a great way for you to learn more about your kids’ dreams - their answers may surprise you! By setting goals with your child, you can lead by example and bond over the journey of seeing your goals through. Celebrate school year’s eve. Host a School Year’s Eve Party! Make the new school year something that is fun and celebrated, not feared and dreaded. It’s a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and catch up before the big day. Get organized. New school year, new schedule. Develop a system to keep the family organized, ensuring resolutions don’t fall by the wayside. Help your family track progress by creating a family “School Year’s Resolutions” corkboard with places for calendars, sports schedules, projects and reminders. Stock up for success. Every school year comes with supply lists and wardrobe needs. Plan in advance to ensure your kids get everything they need and want

AUGUST IS CHILDREN’S EYE HEALTH & SAFETY Month As summer winds down and you scramble to get your children “back to school” ready, don’t forget the importance of healthy vision. As your child grows and changes from year to year, so do their eyes and their vision. School requires extreme visual involvement such as reading, wring, computer and whiteboard work. Even physical educaon and sports require strong vision. If your child is struggling to see well, they may feel red or have trouble concentrang causing them to have problems in school. Here are five signs that your child may have vision problems: • Short aenon span • Losing their place when reading • Avoiding reading and other close acvies • Turning their head to the side • Squinng Your child’s eye health could determine how well they do in school. That’s why it is important to make sure they are geng regular eye exams with an optometrist that can fit them with the correct prescripon lenses depending on their required needs. The earlier a vision problem is detected, the more successful your child will be-in and out of school. Call Woodlands Eyecare to schedule their appointment today,

to start the year successfully. Consider online shopping, and have items shipped to you, allowing more time to soak up those last bits of summer as a family. Online stores usually have larger selections, making it easy to find everything from the classroom must-haves to those special items your kids need to achieve their school year’s resolutions - whether that’s art supplies to become a better artist or the perfect athletic kicks to play their favorite sport. Ease into the new school year. To give your children the best chance of having a great school year, ease into it by adjusting routines a week or more in advance...going to bed earlier, setting the alarm, preparing clothes the night before and meal planning. A Dog’s Tale

...with a little help from my friends

By Amber Williams

and her husband moved in from New England to help care for their grandchildren. With a love for animals, Amy had no idea what her new life had in store. Providence Village’s newest resident had another thing coming. Lilly had an enormous Providence Village family that loved her. Residents would often set food and water out when they saw her pass by. Neighbors tried to help her in many small ways by leaving out blankets, tossing treats across the street and providing shelter. It was amazing to see the love people had for her, but Amy took loving Lilly to a whole new level. Surveying her kingdom...

On April 3, 2015, Lilly was back on the streets. Ann was devastated. Once more, the Facebook pleas and posts of sightings began. Many residents speculated Lilly simply didn’t want to be “owned.” Some posted on social media to let her be, while others knew the truth; that Lilly wanted to be loved and cared for. Lilly needed a family. Lilly roamed the streets of Providence Village for days. Days turned into weeks, months and years. Many people tried to capture her, but she had learned from prior mistakes and dodged each attempt. She was spotted in flower beds, new home construction sites and on front porch couches. Lilly was simply a part of Providence Village life. Even though she didn’t have a family, she belonged to everyone, and she was loved. Living in a community such as Providence Village, moving trucks and new faces were regular occurrences. People would come and go quite frequently. Little did anyone know, an angel was about to arrive. After 762 days on her own, Lilly’s saving grace moved into Providence Village. Amy

16 - Providence Village Experience

Amy was sitting on her new front porch one evening and along came a beautiful dog. “She looked like she was just walking herself!” said Amy. The following evening, the dog was back, and Amy realized that it must be lost. Her first thought was that it must be hungry. At the time, Amy didn’t have a dog of her own, so she went to buy some food for this seemingly lost baby. She set food and water bowls out across the street where Lilly would walk, then run back home and watch her from her doorbell camera. Lilly was eating the food! Amy could tell that she was a sweet spirit and hoped maybe someday, she could call this dog her own. Lilly returned at the same time every evening to eat and would nap in the flowerbed near the sidewalk. Some days, Amy would see her playing with the neighbors’ dogs, who would get out of their yards and play with Lilly, then go back home. She was happy and appeared healthy. Amy was eventually able to get close enough to Lilly that she took a treat out of Amy’s hand. While Lilly ate, Amy would sit near her. When it was intensely hot in the summer, Amy would take ice water over to Lilly several times a day. Eventually, Amy became enlightened about

Lilly’s background and was even more determined to save her. After many months, Lilly began going up onto Amy’s porch and looking in the windows. Amy would watch her from the doorbell camera. She was so in love with this precious girl. “I felt like she was my dog,” Amy said. Amy joined the neighborhood efforts to capture Lilly and get her off the streets. Together with Tracy, another resident concerned about Lilly, they contacted various dog rescues in the area. Mutts & Mayhem, a non-profit specializing in search and rescue, was one of them. They use night vision equipment to observe loose animals for weeks, track their roaming patterns and develop a plan to capture them. Each case is different and equally challenging.

Tracy and Selena. Lilly’s case immediately became critical and qualified for intervention. The vet for Mutts & Mayhem feared that Lilly may have heartworms, which is common for dogs to get, and if left untreated, leads to death. Selena rallied her team, and they began night surveillance. This went on for eleven long days. Mutts & Mayhem followed Lilly’s movements and tracked her patterns, making sure not to leave their scent or alert Lilly in any way that she was being watched. The plan of apprehension was implemented. Knowing Lilly’s history of evading capture, the team set out to build a custom cage. They knew it had to be large and wide-open because Lilly was too smart to go into a small space. The master closet-sized cage was built offsite. According to Selena, dogs cannot see grey or red, so those were the colors used to construct the enclosure. Since the surveillance videos showed a pattern of Lilly going to the side of Amy’s porch, the plan was to put the cage there. While Lilly was away during the day, the massive pen was put in place. A rope was tied to a trap door, and Lilly’s food bowl was placed inside. The team had Amy put her food inside the cage for a couple of days so that Lilly would feel comfortable with it.

Lilly, however, was completely calm. “She looked relieved,” Selena said.

Lilly’s case was assigned to Selena Schmidt, an EMT and volunteer with Mutts & Mayhem, however, due to the high volume of cases, and the fact that Lilly seemed healthy, her case kept getting “bumped” for more critical ones. When Mutts & Mayhem receives a request for help, they triage each case and go with the most critical. Many of the calls are for injured or sick animals, so those took precedence over Lilly. A private message conversation was created between Tracy, Amy and Mutts & Mayhem to keep an open line of communication regarding Lilly, with hopes she’d eventually make it onto the precedented list. Over 13 months had passed by since Amy began feeding Lilly three times a day, every single day. Amy noticed Lilly seemed less active. She was getting thinner and sleeping more. Alarm bells went off in Amy’s head; was Lilly sick? Panic set in, and she got the word out to

Capture day arrived, and everyone was on pins and needles. For every capture, Mutts & Mayhem has their veterinarian on-site, as well as other team members, to be sure they are ready for any possible problems that might occur. With the teams far enough away to not alert Lilly of their presence, communicating by phones and walkie talkie, they waited. Amy and Tracy waited inside and watched on the doorbell camera. Questions swirled in the minds of all those present, “Is this going to work? Does Lilly feel the tension in the air?” Along came Lilly; she was still cautious, but seemed tired. She climbed the steps one by one and entered the cage. The team gave her a few moments to eat, then pulled the rope. They had Lilly! Many times, animals panic and hurt

themselves trying to get out of situations like that. Lilly, however, was completely calm. “She looked relieved,” Selena said. Amy, who had fed Lilly for 17 months, cried. All of the sleepless nights and worrying about this sweet dog were finally at an end. Lilly was in good hands and would live! Amy hugged Lilly and kissed her face, and when she leaned into Amy, Lilly gave what appeared to be a silent, “Thank you.” Selena put a special collar on Lilly and slowly led her willingly away. Lilly was taken to the vet’s ranch, where she was quarantined for four days, given shots and time to decompress. For the first time in years, Lilly slept peacefully. Mutts & Mayhem coordinated with I Am Dog Rescue to take over Lilly’s care. The two organizations worked together and raised funds for Lilly. I Am Dog Rescue provided for Lilly’s medical care and fostering. Neither organization had a foster family for Lilly, so Tracy stepped up and offered to take her in. She was given a crash course in how to foster dogs like Lilly. Tracy even kenneled her own two dogs to ease Lilly’s transition into to her new home so she’d have time to adjust. Tracy was another angel in Lilly’s corner.

After quarantine, Lilly was taken to the vet and given a full exam. She did indeed have heartworms, and according to her doctor, she would have died in less than a year if she wasn’t treated. Part of her exam included x-rays, which revealed that Lilly had been shot. The bullet remained stuck near her spine. Neighbors surmised she had been running away from whoever shot her. It may also explain her getting so easily spooked while walking on leads when hearing loud noises and escaping. How she survived this injury on the street is nothing short of a miracle. Stay tuned for Part 3 of Lilly’s Tale ...

Mind, Body & Soul The Fear of Adjustment

Dr. Kat Bryan

“Geng Adjusted Scares Me!” I hear this oen, and that’s ok. Contrary to popular belief, there is no bone cracking or pulling of heads off spinal columns when geng adjusted. The adjustments some chiropractors use can cause ancipaon for new paents, but the experience is actually much gentler than they imagined and involves a very quick, direct thrust to a specific vertebra. The sound you may hear during an adjustment is called a cavitaon and is merely space being created within the joint, causing gasses to be released from the joint capsule. This is what creates the popping or “cracking” noise.

You don’t always have to have a cavitaon for an adjustment to be effecve. Chiropracc adjustments, unlike “knuckle cracking” or having your friend stomp on you while you lay on the carpet, are applied specifically to improve the moon of your joints and limit the small dysfuncons that, over me, can lead to arthris. Aer an adjustment, most describe the feeling as being “lighter,” while having greater ease in moving the body. They experience less pain and report being able to stand taller. I encourage everyone to do their research and find a chiropractor who performs techniques that best help your body and your needs. Always ensure you are being adjusted by a licensed chiropractor.

Back to School Stress? Do you ever wish you could go back to the excitement of the first day of school when you were a child? You know, new school supplies, seeing friends you hadn’t seen in a while, and all the thrills a new school year brought. As an adult, though, this me of year can be a bit more stressful…geng back into rounes, homework, projects, sports, etc. All the hustle and bustle can take a toll on the body. No maer what stress this fall may bring, our bodies will react the same. Stress of any kind causes our body to release stress hormones, and elevated stress hormones increase inflammaon in our body. Over me, this can lead to different diseases or even unhealthy mental and emoonal coping mechanisms. Massage is a very effecve tool to manage these stress hormones and reduce the risk of disease associated with increased inflammaon in the body. A massage can help reset the brain and body during these stressful back to school months. Hallie Crawford

So, don’t just ‘survive’ through the stress. Be a healthier version of you today, so tomorrow you can be a healthier version of you for those you love and who love you.

This Ain’t Easy Folks! There’s the rub, folks. It isn’t easy. I seem to keep encountering the same issue with people. Everyone wants to meditate. Everyone knows they need to meditate. But no one wants to put in the effort to actually create and establish a meditaon pracce! Lea Goin

How do we get past this? I assure you my methods are easily integrated into your life. Well, let me clarify. They aren’t terribly hard. It isn’t easy! But only because there has to be willingness and dedicaon. The pracces themselves are simple and easy. It takes a sense of self discipline, which, let’s face it, that means nothing more than self-love! How? How does self-discipline equal self-love?? Because it takes a deep sense of self love to say, “I am going to do this thing that I know is super good for me. I am going to make adjustments to my life in other ways, possibly giving up other things that aren’t as good for me, organizing my life enough to make the me, or asking for help in other areas because I am worth this effort to make this space of me in my life to pracce meditaon.” Connue reading by scanning the QR code!

I’M GAINING WEIGHT, and I’m Worried That I Have a Thyroid Problem... This is something I hear a lot among new people who come to see me. They then say, “Well I had my thyroid checked and it was normal.” Well… what exactly did you have checked? The tests of thyroid funcon that you Olga Cortez, M.D. have run can make all the difference. When we test thyroid funcon, we run a panel that consists of four tests. What are they and why do you need four? The first test is a TSH (thyroid smulang hormone) test. This hormone is produced by your pituitary gland and smulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone. When your thyroid gland is not working well, your thyroid hormone level goes down. Your pituitary detects this and starts to release more TSH hormone to smulate your thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone. Therefore, as thyroid funcon goes down, TSH goes up. TSH is the standard thyroid screening test, BUT not the only one for us. Read about the other 3 tests by scanning the QR Code

Guests can experience the UnWine’d Lifestyle on a unique piece of property, a historic chapel that sits on an acre next to a working farm. UnWine’d opened their doors in March 2017 as Southern Chapel Vintage Market, LLC, a quaint market boutique and art studio showcasing local talent. Owners Jorge and Nicole Canales, along with their family, have always had a passion for wine and wanted to bring the UnWine’d Lifestyle experience to their community in Cross Roads, Texas. That passion became a reality in April 2018 when they expanded the Market to include a wine bar. Come out and enjoy this hidden gem with a glass of wine inside the bar, out on the patio, or while you shop inside Southern Chapel Vintage Market. Delight yourself in wine by the glass, bottle or flight, or try one of the craft beer or cider offerings. Pair it with an antipasto board, available in any combination of cured meats, cheese, crackers, nuts, olives, hummus and seasonal fruit, to complete the true wine bar experience.
