Designed by McCumber, it is one of the top resort golf courses in the region and plays at just over 6,600 yards from the back tees, with tight fairways and average size greens with less undulation thanOthermost. courses in the 18-track roster in the area are Grand Bear, designed by Jack Nicklaus; Shell Landing GC, by Davis Love III; and, on the way back to Texas if you are driving, The Club at Diamondhead between Biloxi and New Orleans, with 18-hole courses fashioned by Earl Stone and John LaFoy.

Heading southeast toward Jackson, take a hard left off I-55 at Canton on Hwy. 16 and drive east to the Pearl River Resort, an expansive casino-resort near Philadelphia and the home of Dancing Rabbit Golf Club.
Dancing Rabbit GC may be one of the South’s unsung jew els, with two Tom Fazio/Jerry Pate designed courses nestled quietly among ancient pines and hardwoods. The two tracks –Azaleas and Oaks – embrace the gently rolling hills and valleys in digenous to this part of the world while still retaining the character and gran deur of the great Southern woodlands from which they were carved.

Down in the Southwest part of Louisiana, Lake Charles is experiencing a rebirth.Backin 2020, the state’s fourth-larg est metro area endured two significant hurricanes (Laura on Aug. 27 and Delta on Oct. 9). Laura was a high-end Cat egory 4 packing winds of 150 mph. Delta passed through as a Category 2 with 100 mph winds. Together they crippled the area known as Louisiana’s Playground. But daily, signs of a rebuilt Lake Charles area are evident. In particular, the golf market has come back strong with a handful of courses to fit all types of play ers and groups.
Contraband Bayou Golf Club at L’auberge Casino Resort

Contraband Bayou Golf Club is owned by L’auberge Casino Resort. The course is a Tom Fazio design, but one of his resort-style layouts with marsh and lowland features. The name comes from a nearby waterway, which got its name from Jean Lafitte. The famous pirate was known to use the small bayou, which runs through Lake Charles, as a safe haven for his ships during hurricanes and storms when traveling the Gulf Coast. Despite losing 3,000 trees in Hurricanes Laura, the course has rebounded well thanks to $450,000 worth of sod and a recent project replacing all the bunkers and putting in new bright white fine sand.Next up is replacing the greens, which are original and date back to 2005 when the course opened. The course also features aquatic and natural vegeta tion among its eight lakes. This is Fazio’s only public design in the state. Guests of L’auberge do get a discount on fees at Contraband Bayou Golf Club. Just west of Lake Charles is the city of Westlake, which is home to The National Golf Club of Louisiana. 2022. The enjoyable and popular layout features GPS and Bluetooth-speaker systems in all carts to enhance your play ing experience and guide you around the facility without confusion. Mallard Golf Club was designed by Jeff Blume and features elevated greens and rolling hills. The course is surrounded by native areas and has no trees giving a true Scottish links experience that is unique to this part of the state. Lake Charles also features two casino courses: Contraband Bayou Golf Club and The Country Club at the Golden Nugget. These two courses are right next to each other and in fact, share a driving range (located at Contraband Bayou Golf Club). The Golden Nugget course hosts an annual PGA Tour Korn Ferry event (Lake Charles Champion ship) in the spring. This Todd Eckenrode (Origins Golf) Design opened in 2015 and is known for its plush conditions and native areas. The course is on casino property and laid out with a handful of holes along the water (where Prien Lake meets the Calcasieu River). The front and back finishing holes feature beauti ful backdrops of the clubhouse and the dual casino lodging towers. Staying on property will qualify you for discounts on green and cart fees.

The facility has mature trees and flat fairways with a lone canal that runs through the course and comes into play on six holes. The facility was designed and built by a bunch of volunteers in Sulphur.

There is nothing quite like Hot Springs, Arkansas, a tourism hotbed about an hour from Little Rock that is as appealing as much for its past – a simpler, more laid-back time – as it is for its bustling present and promising future.Hot Springs is famous for its bath houses, which has drawn visitors from around the world for centuries, for its fabulous horse racetrack and casino and – for our purposes – its golf. One of the area’s top places to play is Dia mondhead Golf Club, located about 15 minutes southeast of downtown. Set on rolling and heavily forested land, Diamondhead GC is a pleasure to play for golfers of all skill levels. The course, carded at 6,621 yards from its back set of three tee boxes, challenges players with its relaxing, picturesque backdrop and testing holes, some that travel uphill through the trees. Diamondhead GC is a favor ite of local golfers and tourists alike, as an increase of more than 4,000 rounds in 2021Afterillustrates.thegolf,revel in the area’s history, stay in the peerless Arlington Hotel, relax at Oaklawn’s expanded casino downtown or browse and buy in the town’s many shops. You can even see where Babe Ruth hit his first home run during Spring Training.

Bailey Shoemaker, Kathy Whitworth Invitational Champion
The Volunteers of America Classic is gearing up to make its 5th appearance at the Golf Clubs at the Tribute in the Colony, TX this Fall, September 26thOctober 2nd. The field will feature some of the best talent the LPGA Tour has to offer in addition to promising youngThegolfers.Volunteers of America Classic has already awarded two sponsor’s exemptions and will be awarding a 3rd later this summer. Earlier this Spring, Bailey Shoemaker competed in the Kathy Whitworth Invitational, a local event in Fort Worth, TX. Shoemaker entered the final round three strokes behind the lead. She was able to battle through the day and found herself in a sudden death playoff after her group finished hole 18. It only took Shoemaker one hole to win the playoff and become the back-to-back Kathy Whitworth Invitational Champion, once again earning her a sponsor’s exemption into the 2022 Volunteers of America Classic. Coming out of Dade City, FL, Bailey Shoemaker will graduate from high school in Spring of 2023 and is currently verbally committed to play for the University of Southern California.

TheVolunteers of America Classic is fun for all The 17-year-old already has an impressive resume as she has competed in the U.S. Girls’ Junior, Junior Solheim Cup, Florida Women’s open, where she earned low amateur honors and most recently made her debut at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Shoemaker missed the cut at the 2021 Volunteers of America Classic but will look to make a statement in her return thisAnotherFall. player looking to make a statement with her sponsor’s exemption is McKinney, TX local Avery Zweig. Avery Zweig, also known as “The Nugget,” is only 15 years old, but she is no stranger to the big stage. Avery Zweig first came into the scene at the age of 8 when she was featured on a reality show in 2015 called “The Short game,” a show that showcased eight of the very best young golfers in the world and how they navigate life around the game of golf. Zweig was awarded a sponsorship exemption to play the Volunteers of America Classic in 2021 Avery Zweig, winner of the 2021 Volunteers of America Girl’s Championship

after winning the Volunteers of America Girl’s Championship by four strokes. Zweig got the opportunity to jump in the commentary booth with Grant Boone and Judy Rankin during round three of the 2021 Volunteers of America Classic, where she spoke about how excited she was about the experience and the knowledge she gained from LPGA Tour players during the first two rounds of competition. Zweig will look to use the experience she gained within the last year to make an impact on the leaderboard this Fall.
The final sponsor’s exemption will be awarded this summer. The Volunteers of America Classic will be continuing its partnership with the Northern Texas PGA as they will be hosting the Volun teers of America Classic Girls Champi onship on Monday, July 11 - Wednesday, July 13. The first two rounds of the Girls Championship will be played at the Tribute Golf Links, with the final round taking place at Old American Golf Club. This is the 2nd year of the champion ship and is the same event that allowed Avery Zweig to reach her first LPGA Tour event last year at the age of 14. The goal of the Volunteers of America Classic Girls Championship is to allow young female golfers in the state of Texas the opportunity to compete at the highest level of competition golf, as well as grow the game amongst the next generation of LPGA Tour players. 63 players took to the course for the 2021 Volunteers of America Girls Champion ship, and a similar field is expected to return in July. Golf fans are encouraged to come out and follow these rising stars in addition to the world’s best female golfers September 29 – October 2. Spectators can purchase Daily Grounds tickets for $20 or Weekly Grounds tickets for $45. New for 2022 is the Casamigos Club, located on the 17th green. The 18-hole facility opened in 1924 as a nine-hole private course for the elite Fort Worth golfers of the day. The Great Depression caused the course to close and it fell into disrepair over the years. In 1936 the city purchased the course, eventually expanding it to 18 holes and it has seen plenty of changes over the years, but nothing like the upcoming transfor mation.“We couldn’t be more pleased with the work John Colligan and Trey Kemp did at Rock wood Park and we think they will do the same at Meadowbrook,” said Lewis.
“It has a number of unique holes with elevation chang es and water and we think this re-design will only enhance the player experience.”
bond measure passing, that’s certainly what we want to do for Meadowbrook,” said Dave Lewis, the Assistant Director for Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department. Fort Worth will spend $7 million and use the same architect - John Colligan Golf Design - who transformed Rockwood Park, to perform the same golfing magic on Meadowbrook.

“The question we’ll have with this course and every Fort Worth course we touch is how will we make it better?”
Meadowbrook will close in the fall of 2023, according to Lewis, and reopen in Spring or early summer 2025.
The hugely successful renovation of Rockwood Park Golf Course helped transform Fort Worth public golf for the better and now city leaders are planning on using the same formula on the city’s oldest and most historic golf course, Meadowbrook in east Fort Worth.
The new course is proposed to open as a par 70 layout at 6,400 yards from the back

the future and make it better,” said Lewis.
“Like most courses, it’s got all kinds of positives to work with. There are a number of places where water comes into play, plus some elevation off the tee boxes and around the greens. Its natural features are something any architect would like to work with, which is why we’re excited for John (Colligan) and Trey (Kemp) to transform this historic piece of Fort Worth golfAmongproperty.”the major improvements to the course will be a new and modern irrigation system, along with a complete replacement of the green complexes and a rerouting of some of the holes to take away some difficult or unneeded shot angles.“The goal for Meadowbrook is to com plete a sustainable and enjoyable course for the future,” Lewis said. “This is a course people love to play, but it’s like an old car, there are times you have to work on the things which are broken and need be fixed for it to be enjoyable again.”

The two courses’ Comanche Lakes and Apache Links serve as a grand golf introduction to the scenic area.
“We keep improving the courses, but also what’s around the layouts as well,”
“We’ve seen growth and people coming to the area over the last 10 years, but there’s nothing quite like playing 18 or 36 holes of championship golf, heading back to your short term rental and just kicking back with a sixpack while overlooking the river,” said Kelly Harris, tourism director for Glen Rose and Somervell County.
Squaw Valley is located in Glen Rose, just 60 miles southwest of the DFW Metroplex. It’s home to 36 holes of Championship Golf, which is consis tently rated as one of the top courses in the state, including a 4 1/2 star rating from Golf Digest Magazine. It’s also home to the #1 and #4 municipal courses in Texas as ranked by The Dallas Morning News in its annual statewide survey. It’s a day trip, from North Texas or the Waco-Temple area or even better for a weekend getaway. Squaw Valley GC features beautiful vistas of century old oak trees and Squaw Creek which mean ders through both courses. The Comanche Lakes layout is a par 72 which plays a stout 7,000 yards from the back tees. As the name would sug gest, there is more water on this course and a need to be precise on your tee shots. The Apache Links course is also a par 72, but plays nearly 7,100 yards and is surrounded by more trees and a tighter landing area off the tee. Both are open to the public and take tee times several days in advance. They also offer limited memberships if you want to play here on a regular basis. With 36 holes of golf, you can always alternate your green grass challenge.
Championship golf, scenic surround ings, laid back Lone Star living and at tractions you will not find anywhere else in Texas is what makes the Glen Rose, Somervell County area so attractive to residents and visitors alike.
“It’s unique, offers good variety and plenty of fun for visitors and locals alike.”One of the leading attractions here is the championship public Squaw Creek golf course, first opened in 1992 by Texas architect Jeffrey Brauer and later updated by Fort Worth’s John Colligaan.

of Fame member Tom Watson, who is now involved in cutting horse competi tion in the area, to stop by for a hot dog or two or three. Other local attractions include several dinosaur themed outlets such as Dinosaur Valley State Park, Dino saur World and the Creation Evidence Museum for the ancient dinosaur bones which were unearthed here.
Nothing like a laid back six-pack to get you in a proper Texas frame of mind.
Harris said. “That’s one of the items which keep people coming back to this wonderful area.”
Among the biggest recent improve ments at Squaw Valley is the addition of the new lavish outdoor pavilion which can host a wide variety of functions, from Lions Club meetings to weddings and wedding receptions to even Casino Nights. The upgraded food menu has been good enough to attract World Golf Hall
There is also Fossil Rim Wildlife Park, owing its name to the prehistoric treasures which populate this area. The quaint and historic Somervell County Courthouse is surrounded by historic buildings and local shops.
“Certainly, everything is bigger and better since I arrived here a decade ago, everything is growing in the area,” Har ris said “It’s a great area, great scenery with lots of great things to do.”
Of course, if you need one more dose of golf and Dino evenly inter spersed, there is the Dino Hills Disc Golf Course, which has been rated one of the best in the United States.

Bynum and Thelen Claim Open and Senior Division Titles at TPx Spring Classic
Trading the lead throughout the round and finishing with a sudden death playoff, Autumn Bynum, Assistant Professional at Jimmy Clay Golf Course bests Chase Cooper, Director of Instruction at Hal Sutton Golf Academy to claim her first Southern Texas PGA Major win at the 2022 TPx Spring Classic. Bynum, a former STPGA Junior Golfer, had an impressive two rounds with 10 birdies and a total score of 140 (-4), marking the first female individual win at a STPGA Major.

Bynum and Cooper went back and forth at the top of the leaderboard throughout Round Two and a combination of Bynum’s birdie and Cooper’s bogey on Hole 18 sent the two to a one hole sudden death playoff on the 10th Hole where Bynum made birdie to claim the Championship.
“[Winning back-to-back] is great,” said Thelen. “I didn’t play very well on the front nine and Steve [Jurgensen] birdied Hole 13 and 14 to get us within a shot of each other and I birdied Holes 15 and 16 to just coast in from there.”
“This win means a lot,” said Bynum. “I haven’t won a tournament since I was in college so coming out here and seeing that I can do it and knowing that I can do it is a real confidence booster.”
“The thing I am most looking forward to in Section events is getting better and better, making new connections, meeting new people, and just having fun,” said Bynum.
The TPx Spring Classic also included a Senior Division for PGA Professionals ages 50 and over. After leading by three strokes following Round One, Tim Thelen, PGA Assistant Professional at Texas A&M Golf Course headed into Round Two with six birdies under his belt and was neck and neck with Steve Jurgensen, PGA Teaching Professional at Wildcat Golf Club. Thelen had five more birdies, including two key ones on Hole 15 and Hole 16 to defend his 2021 TPx Spring Classic Senior Division Champion title with a final score of 138 (-6).

“Reaching another record high amount for scholarships shows how supportive our Southern Texas golf community is in impacting these young adults’ lives,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director STPGA. “We can’t thank our Trustees enough for their continued support of this program.”
We would like to specifically recognize the Hannon Cup Association for their $50,000 investment this year which yielded 5 scholarships at $10,000 each. We also want to thank Energy Transfer and the Energy Transfer Texas Senior Open for their $24,000 investment as well as the Cimarron Hills Pro-Am that supports the JL Lewis Scholarship and their $16,000 donation.
Additionally, we welcome four new scholarships that involve PGA Professionals, the overall game of golf in Texas, and names that continue to live on. Thank you to the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and the first ever Joe Black Scholarship, the Burke Family for the Eddie Burke Sr. Scholarship, PGA Professional Jim Murphy for giving back, and past President of the STPGA Charlie Epps! We also want to thank all of our returning trustees and scholarships that make this program what it is today!
Each scholarship helps continue a tradition of giving back and also honoring an individual or organization that believes in the next generation.

Scholarships positively impact lives with each scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
The PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Program is excited to announce the awarding of 42 scholarships amounting to $178,000 to 36 individual people. This amount is an increase of $55,000 compared to last year as well as 11 more scholarships! These funds will help these 36 young adults continue their academic career during the 2022-2023 school year.
This was the second major championship in 2022 for the Southern Texas PGA and was contested at BlackHorse Golf Club (South Course), a par-72, 6,890-yard facility. Headed by title partner, TPx, this year’s championship also featured presenting partners Hammock Beach, Club Car, GT Golf Supplies, HOW Water, Boulder Designs and Border Magic by Pinnacle, TPC Industrial, Links and Leisure, and Sterling Cut Glass. This event featured a total purse of $27,000 for Open Division and $4,850 for Senior Division.
PGA REACH Southern Texas Awards $178,000 in College Scholarships
“The STPGA as a whole has meant a lot to me. It’s like family at this point,” said Ty Roberts, winner of the Jeff Morton and JL Lewis Scholarship. “Being chosen for these scholarships means the world, because it allows me to focus on my golf career as well as my academics.”Since1999, the PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Program has awarded more than 425 scholarships and over $1,490,500 to young adults seeking higher education. Scholarships are given to graduating high school seniors and current college students who demonstrate high levels of achievement and outstanding character.

Right from the start my caddie, Char lie, and I hit it off at the challenging course called McVeigh’s Gauntlet here in rural Oregon. I’m not exactly sure what the at traction was. Perhaps just a simple case of animalWhatever, magnetism.Chuck — as I came to call him as we become better acquainted over that tenuous 7-hole stretch — trotted alongside me doing a fine job. Other than stopping to munch on grass — and poop on occasion — he was a joy to be with. Sure, he didn’t read putts at all and his intermittent comments on my swings or ball flight was simply “Baaaaaaddddd,” but overall, he was the G.O.A.T. of caddies I’ve ever Poop?used.Eatgrass?
Oh, did I forget to mention Charlie the G.O.A.T. is in fact a goat? Well there, now I’ve said it. Actu ally, to be nationality-correct, Chuck is a purebred American Range goat. As one of only two golf courses in the world to use goats as caddies, The Retreat, Links and Spa at Silvies Valley Ranch in eastern Oregon is a very special place. And the round with Chuck, on a course that’s a demanding walk and a golf-ball-eating track full of hills, rocks, and sagebrush, was a Chuckjoy. was a real trooper, asking only to be paid peanuts — “Salted ones, please,” for his work. While he’s a workhorse — please excuse that mixed four-legged metaphor there — his rule is he won’t carry a full set of clubs. But, you only need a few clubs here and because of that, you can add a few extra pack pounds with cans of all-important adult beverage a.k.a. beer. And trust me, on the Gauntlet, those pops are a very welcome medication.

And there was no way I was carrying my clubs, balls, and beers over the final three holes even though it was mostly downhill. So sadly for Chuck, he had to do the wait-to-be-served thing until we finished.Interestingly enough, Chuck is a rather shy dude. But with some sweet talk and, yes, a couple of handfuls of peanuts, I managed to convince him to do a 1-on-1, face-to-face interview that is now on YouTube and Facebook.

UP WITH GOLFNOW
Starting off at one tee time going all the way up to four tee times, per day, in exchange for various services they offer. Between their 3rd party booking site, mar keting and social media support, website hosting, point of sale software & even an answering service, you would end up paying them nothing! Just a measly 16 rounds per day. Or 480 rounds per month. Or up to a staggering 5,840 rounds per year. For a golf course averaging 40,000 rounds a year, that’s 15% of your inventory. And with no up-front costs, many courses overlook this steep price because the perceived value of this relationship looks very fair… on paper. GolfNow cares about one thing and one thing only, their bottom line. So, how have they managed to entrench themselves so firmly in the golf industry? They preach they are here to help golf course owners, but from my experience they look at golf course operators and management companies as supremely naïve. GolfNow reps come bearing gifts as well as lunch for their quarterly visits to explain “how great they are perform ing for you”. What is left out is the mas sive revenue they are stripping from your golf course and the booking fees they are gouging your golfers for as well. On top of that, they have done an impressive job at making you believe you have no other option in the golf market.Well, that’s just not true and certainly not a re lationship I wanted to be involved in. I wanted to separate myself from the competition. I wanted to break free from this toxic relation ship. I didn’t want to wait for a quarterly statement from someone controlling my inventory to stop by with lunch and tell me how well I was doing. I wanted to look at how I was doing every month, week or even every day by checking the analytics myself. I also wanted my golfers to benefit by getting amazing instant rewards, special promo codes to save money on future tee times, bad weather discounts & most importantly stop the booking fee gouging on my golfers. I wanted a better overall experience for my golfer.
Every significant relationship is defined by its partners’ duties to each other. Each party has something to give to the other to keep it balanced. Golf Now is in a relationship with over 9,000 golf courses in the world. I was one of those golf courses. Being in a relationship with GolfNow is simple. You don’t pay them a dime, all they want in return is your golf course’s tee times.

I formed a new relationship with a partner on the cutting edge of the golf industry who made this transition as effortless as possible. I now have the sharpest looking website in my city and the most beneficial booking engine in the industry today. Not to mention ac cess to cutting edge analytics. My biggest fear was, “what will happen to all of the rounds that were booked through GolfNow?” I was petri fied. Did I make the right call? Will people still book at my golf course? The answer was a resounding “YES”!

The most important lesson I learned is that the average golfer is smart and savvy. If they want to play at my golf course, they will simply type my course name into a search engine and go to my website. Why am I telling you this story when I could easily keep this information to myself? As being part of a community of golf course operators, I feel it’s my duty to share best practices. GolfNow isn’t helping the golf industry, it’s hurting it. So, who am I in a relationship with now, I’m sure you’re asking yourself? So, I had enough. I started thinking outside the box and doing some research, there had to be better options out there. I decided I wanted to take back my golf. I wanted to control my dynamic pricing and keep 100% of my revenue for every tee time I sold online. Sound too good to be true?Sound too difficult to accomplish? …. Well, It’s not. I decided to break up with GolfNow. It’s already become the smartest move I’ve made in my career.. With GolfNow I averaged 600 online rounds booked per month. With an average of $18,000 in monthly revenue. Two hundred of those rounds generated $0 in revenue due to my tee time trade agree ment I had. That’s an Average Round Per Golfer (APR) of $34. In the one month since I have left GolfNow, in the shoulder month of July no less, I increased online rounds by 35%! From those online rounds, total revenue was increased by an astonishing 120%!! July produced an eye popping $51 APR, an increase of $18 in revenue per Ingolfer!thatvery first month I left Golf Now, I had a RECORD month in online bookings for rounds and revenue! I also had a record number of e-blasts opened, the highest click through rate EVER & a record number of new E-Club subscrib ers. There aren’t enough exclamation marks in the world to properly express my Howelation.did I do this, though? How did I break up with the one entity everyone in the golf industry MUST be in a relation ship with?
