Addy Gose By: Tylie McDonald

Just as many professional rodeo athletes get to participate in what is known as “Cowboy Christmas,” youth contestants also get a taste of what it is like to hit the rodeo trail hard for a couple of weeks. Over the Fourth of July, youth athletes traveled to Texas and gathered in Glen Rose, Decatur, and everywhere in between. Contestants from Texas, Louisiana, and Wyoming made their appearances, but it was the cowgirl from Florida that dominated the competition everywhere she went. Addy Gose is an exceptional breakaway roper from Lorida, Florida. She has been in the arena ever since she could remember. “My mom grew up doing it, and that carried over to my siblings and I,” she said. Gose began her rodeo career running speed events such as barrels and poles. “I didn’t start breakaway roping until I was about 11,” she said. Addy

knew, from the moment she picked up her first rope, that breakaway roping would be something she loved. However, Addy knows that it takes a village for one to accomplish their dreams as a rodeo athlete. “My biggest mentors are my parents,” she said, “I can’t thank them enough for everything they do; I definitely owe all of the credit to them.” Along with her family, Gose’s horse, Scooby, is another reason she continues to be victorious in the arena. Gose said, “He is very quirky, but he is a winner! He has brought a lot of confidence into my roping in two short years, and I know I can count on him every time to do his part.” It is obvious that Addy spends a solid amount of time in the practice pen. Keeping Scooby sharp and staying on top of her game are her top priorities. Gose always makes sure that when practicing, she is working on a certain aspect of her roping. “When I’m getting

The Rodeo Sports Journal - Page 6 August 2022

ready for a rodeo or competition I work on staying aggressive, staying up front, and taking my first shot,” Gose said. She added, “It has always been really important to me to make sure I don’t always rope for myself, and that I take the way my horses are working and what they need into consideration when I practice.” Well, the hours have paid off and Addy’s hard work allowed her to have a very prosperous “Cowboy Christmas.” Gose started off by winning second place at the Ultimate Breakaway Roping in Glen Rose. Then, she went to Decatur and became the champion in every single breakaway roping she entered. These ropings consisted of the 19&U and Open Roy Cooper Breakaway Roping, as well as the Durango Timed Event Breakaway Roping. “It felt really good to start the summer off on a good note,” Addy said, “Hopefully I can keep it going.” Summer is Addy’s favorite time for all things roping and

rodeo. Her and her family travel for about a month and a half every summer to compete at ropings and other rodeos such as the International Finals Youth Rodeo in Shawnee, Oklahoma and the National High School Finals Rodeo where she will represent Team Florida one last time. Gose will enroll at Weatherford College this fall to finish out her Associate of Arts degree. She then plans to attend Tarleton State University to obtain a degree in Business Marketing. “With this being my senior year, it is bittersweet,” Gose said. “I’m really looking forward to college rodeos this year; I’m excited for the next chapter.” Addy Gose will be one to watch for many years to come. With her exceptional talent and competitive spirit, she is likely to accomplish great things in and out of the rodeo arena. The Rodeo Sports Journal wishes Addy a blessed summer and looks forward to seeing her down the road!

Texas FFA Rodeo Lights up the night in Fort Worth Texas The Texas FFA Association held it’s 20th Anniversary rodeo July 10th-July 12th at the Historic Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. Stock Contractor, Champion Rodeo Company (Bob & National Champion) provided the stock and made sure they brought out only the best to showcase the young rodeo talent within the Texas FFA Association. 312 contestants from all over the state of Texas filled the arena and gave it their best shot at bringing home the championship title. 106 Barrel racers ran for a shot at that title but when all the dust settled, it was Lipan, Tx Micah Wallace that was crowned the winner. Micah placed in the top 3 of both long rounds and ran another consistent run in the short go to win the average. The Steer Wrestling championship title went to cowboy Braedon Scott of Madisonville, Tx. He came into the short go high call back and finished it off with a winning run. Speaking of consistency, Haley Hunt of Alvord, Tx couldn’t be touched in the breakaway, she made 2 very consistent runs giving her more than a 2 second

lead coming into the short go. Her consistency paid off and she won the average to become this years breakaway champion. Bareback rider, Lane Evans of Goldthwaite, Tx was the only rider to make a qualified ride in the long go, setting him up to be the champion in the final

time to take the lead. Laney is this years goat tying champion. Finishing out the Tuesday short round, the boys gave it their all in the bull riding. Coldspring, Tx cowboy Hayden Ferguson came back to the short round 2nd call back. He drew up good and spurred one to win the average and earn the championship title. The Texas FFA Rodeo was one for the books, Cowtown Coliseum was packed with standing room only during every performance. Christian Corral By: Tylie McDonald

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” - Luke 6:41 NIV One of the most common perceptions of the Christian Community is that it is filled with judgy people. While righteously holding our brothers and sisters in Christ accountable is our duty, we are to do so out of love. However, judging people for the way they dress, mistakes they’ve made in the past, or even their popularity is not what God calls us to do. This is something I personally struggle with. But, I have learned that unfairly judging others does nothing for me except make me feel convicted for many reasons. For one, I used to often judge someone for something they did that cannot be changed. Now, I reflect on my own mistakes and all the times I had been given grace; then, I try to reciprocate that energy onto the person I previously felt negatively towards. Additionally, I came to

realize that God has the ultimate power; therefore, He is the Judge and only He can judge. Once I finally came to this conclusion, I felt more peace in my everyday life and soon got to where I was rarely interested in talking or thinking badly of someone. Instead, I focus on how I can better myself and my own relationship with Christ so that I can lead by example. I encourage you to look at people with an attitude of positivity and compassion, not spite and disgust. Just as God has shown us grace and mercy, let us do the same unto others.

We Take Pride in the Cowboy Way The cowboy way is simple, there's only a few basic rules. Belief in God and Country, the way we learned in school. Cowboys believe in justice, and standin' up for all that's right. But if you cross a cowboy, you'll find yourself ... in a cowboy fight. A cowboy loves his country; he bleeds red, white and blue. He's loyal and patriotic, an American through and through. He supports our troops and salutes the flag wherever it may wave. And defends the rights of others, cause real cowboys ... are brave. A cowboy talks with God just like he was talkin' to you or me. At a cowboy church, or from a horseback perch, or under some old tree. He might pray for rain, or a good crop of grain, or a better price for beef. He'll pray to ease the suffering of others ... cause that's a cowboy's belief. Cowboys honor their parents, and say "Yes, sir" when addressed. They love their pickup trucks and horses, but they love their ladies best. They're fond of little buckaroos who choose to wear cowboy boots and hats. They enjoy the company of a country dog ... but don't have much use for cats. You'll find 'em in the local cafe, at the feed store or an auction barn. Discussin' horses, politics and cows, or spinnin' a cowboy yarn. They spend time with their family, of course, their children by their side. But most of all, cowboys stand tall.... that's what you call cowboy pride. Jerry Schleicher (c) 2010

HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO™ ANNOUNCES UPDATES TO 2023 RODEOHOUSTON® COMPETITION The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announced updates to the RODEOHOUSTON Competition, a 20-day tournament-style competition that crowns an event champion in bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, women’s barrel racing and women’s breakaway roping. Among the updates for 2023 RODEOHOUSTON: Women’s breakaway roping will now be held 20 consecutive nights of RODEOHOUSTON, Feb. 28 – March 19, 2023. Women’s breakaway roping, sanctioned by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) debuted at RODEOHOUSTON in 2022, and was previously held for seven performances. RODEOHOUSTON will split its previous oneday Wild Card round into a two-day event, eliminating the RODEOHOUSTON Super Shootout from the schedule. Wild Card round 1 will be held Friday, March 17 Wild Card round 2 will be held Saturday, March 18 The money from RODEOHOUSTON’s previous one-day Super Shootout event will now be redistributed toward the RODEO-

HOUSTON Super Series purse. The RODEOHOUSTON purse has increased to $2,178,000. RODEOHOUSTON will add two new local qualifiers, the Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo in Rosenberg, Texas, and the Waller County Fair & Rodeo in Hempstead, Texas, replacing the former qualifier, Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas. Champions in each of the approved eight events, from each respective Rodeo, will be extended an invitation to compete at RODEOHOUSTON in 2023. “We are committed to making RODEOHOUSTON the best it can be, for our fans and athletes alike, and as we look at our presentation and the growth across the sport of rodeo, we continue to evolve RODEOHOUSTON’s offerings, as well as our presentation,” said Chris Boleman, Rodeo president and CEO. “The RODEOHOUSTON Super Shootout was a great part of our Rodeo over the last decade, but with this redistribution of funds, and the inclusion of breakaway roping, our purse is now larger than ever before. We’re also excited to welcome Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo and Waller

County Fair and Rodeo as our two new local qualifiers.” RODEOHOUSTON Structure: RODEOHOUSTON is organized into five threeday Super Series, two Semifinal rounds, two Wild Card rounds and a Championship round. Each series includes three rounds, with one round being performed each day. There are eight contestants in each of the eight rodeo events during the series. Each series advances the top four money winners in each event to one of the two Semifinal rounds, where 10 athletes compete in each event. Both Semifinal rounds send the top four athletes in each event to the Championship, while the remaining six move to one of the two Wild Card rounds for a second chance at earning a spot in the Championship. From both Wild Card rounds, the top one athlete in each event advances to the Championship on Sunday, March 19. The Championship includes all 10 athletes competing in each event. The top four advance and immediately ride again in the Championship Shootout Round to determine the event champion and the $50,000 payout.

RODEOHOUSTON is an official Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo, has been a WPRA sanctioned event for decades, and is a PRCA NFR® money event, with earnings from RODEOHOUSTON counting toward qualification for the NFR and the WPRA World Standings. Champions in all events earn $50,000 in addition to their previous round earnings. RODEOHOUSTON is an institution in the world of rodeo. For 90 years it’s been the largest event of its kind and we could not be more excited to see the purse increase to more than $2 million for next year’s event,” said Tom Glause, PRCA CEO. “Adding to the excitement, any PRCA athlete now has the chance to advance to compete at RODEOHOUSTON in 2023, thanks to additional qualifying events at PRCA rodeos in Rosenberg and Hempstead, Texas. We are thankful for the increased opportunities for our PRCA members at RODEOHOUSTON
