CLASS OF 2022

Alvajoy Sefah Asante Success chalked does not occur on a silver plata or comes by so easily. Success is driven by hard work that also demands personal sacrifice. Sacrifice that shifts the present enjoyments to the future. This is what our economists would call, “the opportunity cost.” That is, forgoing one’s present enjoyments for future academic achievements.

My own high school successful story began when I started taking into consideration the advice of my African parents for hardworking. They would say to me, “work hard now and enjoy tomorrow, for hard work does not hurt or break a bone but rather, it would elevate you to a greater height.” They would also say, being lazy does not pay but breeds poverty. With all these at the back of my head, I set a goal for myself and worked hard to achieve it. The result is the celebration of my success today as one of the top students for the year 2022.

PRACTICING GOOD SELF-CARE IN COLLEGE BY KATINA SMITH, CERTIFIED FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION COUNSELOR Finishing high school is a major milestone for a student. However, moving out of the house and going off to college is a major life transition. Although you may still depend on your parents and family members to provide support, college is a time of moving away from what is familiar to the new. You have more freedom and the ability to make choices about your life and how you are going to care for yourself. It is extremely critical that you learn to practice good self-care so that you can thrive throughout your college years and beyond. It is important that you focus on your emotional and physical well-being by creating a community, exercising regularly, eating healthy, getting adequate sleep, and managing stress. Community involves creating friendships with other students and building relationships with faculty, staff, and even within the community where you live. Although for some, it is an adjustment to meet others and you may be challenged with stepping outside of your comfort zone. However, building these community connections can ensure that you have the support you need especially if you are facing a difficult situation whether it is school related or a personal matter. As the famous English poet, John Donne wrote, “no man is an island”. This statement means that we must rely on others in order to flourish. Exercise is important because it helps control your mental health and mood, maintain a healthy weight, sleep better, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve your overall health. Depending on the college you attend, you may have to walk across campus to get to and from your classes. This is definitely a great way to get in exercise. Additionally, finding something you enjoy doing is the key to incorporating regular exercise. If going to the gym is not your preference, walking, running, swimming, hiking, playing sports, and dancing are all great ways to get your body moving. Getting in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week is ideal. Eating healthy can be a big challenge for anyone, but it can especially be difficult for college students. You may not be able to cook a full course meal but making healthier choices such as choosing salad over burgers and fries and incorporating more vegetables and fruits into your diet can help boost your energy throughout the day. Carrying health snacks to eat between classes can help curve those cravings for sugary and salty snacks such as cookies and potato chips which lack the nutrients your body needs to function at an optimum level. Also, drinking at least 60 ounces of water a day will keep you hydrated and help with hunger cravings. Adequate sleep is necessary because it gives your body time to recover from the day. Sleep is important for proper brain function, relaxing our body, reducing stress, and it also helps control our weight. Many college students stay up all night to study for test and finals, but in the long run, it can throw the body out of balance leading to memory issues, weight gain, a weakened immune system, and it can affect your mood. Learning to manage your time and prepare for everyday life is necessary to ensure you get adequate sleep. It is recommended that most young adults need about 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Managing stress helps us to live a healthy, happy, and productive life. When you go off to college, you are faced with decisions such as what courses to take, choosing a major, working while going to school and much more. In addition, you will have to prepare for test, finals, and complete various assignments. With these mounting responsibilities, you can become overwhelmed and feel stressed. During these times, it is important that you learn to step away and realize that you can only control so much. You may have to re-evaluate your schedule to see if there is something that you can eliminate or change to create better balance. Furthermore, techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or even spending time outdoors in nature will help alleviate stress. It is also beneficial to talk to someone that is willing to listen and can understand what you are going through and offer viable solutions such as a mentor, guidance counselor or a family member you trust.

Looking back when you were younger having the thrive and passion for education and success to show the world what you’re capable of. Writing your first book during your middle school years. It was then when we saw you making your mark on the world that has significantly grown and continues to do so as you not only follow your dreams but you chase them immensely. We have always seen a light in you that shines brighter by each passing day when you overcome a new obstacle, not only for making your parents and family proud, but also to show yourself that you can do this! You are so young and have such a remarkable future ahead of you that you have set fourth several footprints for others to follow in. So many people go through life not knowing who they are and you were blessed to know just that. The answer is simple, you are a child of God, and you have manifested his glory that is within you. You realized your gift that was given to you, chose to walk in it, and have done it so much that to others it seems easy. You are going to change the world and this is only the beginning for you. Continue to push yourself to go beyond set limitations, knowing your goals and aspirations and surpass them. You are a diamond that has been redefined and set out for the world to see. We love you beyond words and remember... “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” -Harriet Tubman

We love you, Mom & Dad and the entire family. www.thepostfoundation.org

Sleep tips to get the extra edge in college this fall By Jason Wooden, PhD Want to hear about something that will give you the extra edge? We need to talk about your sleep. For starters, it’s harder to focus and think clearly when sleep deprived. Also, it’s while you’re sleeping that all that stuff you learned during the day is consolidated in the brain. That’s going to make it harder to study, do assignments, and affect your test performance. It’s no surprise that students who sleep six or fewer hours a night have a lower GPA than those who get eight or more. Unfortunately, as many as 60% of college students suffer from poor sleep quality. If you want to make the best of your college experience, you need to follow some simple rules: Stay on schedule - consistent wake up & sleep times will help keep your body’s natural sleep-wake clock on track • Maintain a regular bedtime routine - relaxing activities will make the transition to sleep easier • Stay active - physical activity fights stress, improves mood, and promotes deeper sleep

• Limit your daytime naps - too long or too late can make it harder to fall asleep at bedtime • Avoid electronics at night - the bright light from the screens signals your brain it’s time to wake up • Keep your sleeping space dark, quiet, and cool - a poor sleep environment can ruin your sleep Following these rules will enable you to achieve as others can’t because your mind and body is performing at its best. You’ll truly be ahead of the crowd and have the extra edge. Jason Wooden has worked for over 20 years in biomedical research. He’s currently the co-founder of BetterSleepSimplified.com, a health website focused on helping people find practical answers for common sleep issues.

Harrison Quincy Johnson Northwest School of the Arts

Class of 2022

Congratulations Harrison

I knew you were special the day I held you in my arms. You have filled my heart with music, literally since before you could talk. Fast forward to this very day and you are still singing every morning before school. Something I look forward to everyday. You have been a joy to raise. Such an honorable young man, that carries himself with a great level of respect. I admire your discipline with time management, school, extra curricular activities and how you balance it all out while maintaining the Honor Roll. It is because of your hard work and determination that you have been accepted into every school you applied for and were offered over $150,000 in scholarships. Continue to navigate in life this way as you move towards your goals, keeping God at the center of it all and a song in your heart. Know that everything you set out to do will not be easy, but all will be so worth it once accomplished.
