Joshua 24:15 But as for me and my household,

Cue the music:

“Schooool’s out for summer!” By Mehgan Drake The kids have rushed out of the school doors, and with them have rused out all forms of structure for the next two months. What are you going to do? How will you survive? I think even homeschool mamas are faced with the dilemma of keeping kids occupied. There are a ton of places to go and things to do in our

area, but you can only be on the go so many days and spend so much money. So how can you and your kiddos have structure, have fun, and spend time together without camping out in front of the TV? I have found that as a homeschooler, I do not need our way of life to come to halt just because of the season, so we take a little break to catch our breath, and then take a new approach to homeschool. During summer months, we hit the road for small overnight trips, go to the zoo, hang out with friends, visit local swimming holes, go crabbing and fishing, and a variety of other activities. However, most days we are at 5

home together while my hubby is at work. And it never fails, if we are home and there is a lull in structure and planning, we all camp out in front of the TV or other screens. It drives me insane. So we do homeschool. It is totally different than what we do during the school year, except for math--we plug away at that all year. During the hot months at home, we choose fun things to explore. Think--unit studies. Unit studies are small studies focused on a particular subject for a short amount of time. Past units for us have included insects, geography, weather, and joy messy, hands-on experiments presidents. This year, we will en- with an introduction to chemistry

curriculum. With the world at our fingertips, there is an overwhelming

amount of resources available. We have hatched praying mantis and butterflies, cracked geodes, made a “layer of the earth” cake, and studied they types of rocks with melted candy. There are a whole host of videos and experiments covering weather. There are some fantastic books over all the presidents, including biographies of each president for all ages…. even you, Mom! Take field trips to historical places near you (hello TX History!), go on nature hikes like Lewis and Clark, and learn about plants. I personally love using YouTube to find catchy videos and songs for our studies. Try visiting your local library and

picking out fun books that cover your topic. Depending on what your kids are interested in, and how old they are, you can find wonderful resources to have fun and learn together whether it is learning states and capitals, oceans, planets, plants, or body science! We also include literature that we can make fun. My littles this year will dive into the Narnia series, and my oldest will jump into the Lord of the Rings. Both series of books have comprehension guides available online that include games, crafts, and recipes. and supplement with fun asides is Little House on the Prairie. My kids absolutely loved the dance party we had while we made butter the way the pioneers did! If you don’t know where to start, ask your kids what they really enjoyed learning about this past school year, and use it as a guide to not only review, but to dig deeper than classroom time can allow for. What are your kids particularly in-

terested in at the moment? Let their passion lead the way for their summer sessions. It should be noted that this article is NOT just for homeschool moms. intentional time with our children, and learning along with them and having fun in the process is a great way to start. Make sure to document your summer adventures so at the end of it all, you can create a scrapbook or photo book with your kids, so you can look back at your memories. We do not do school everyday of the week. We may do two or three, and we keep the schedule fairly relaxed to allow for outings and get-togethers with friends. But with just a little bit of internet, time, and planning, you can help your kids continue learning, stay off of screens, and have a great time with their mama that they will always remember. Even if you choose to completely disregard summer school at home, choose to actively spend time with your babies cooking up new recipes, reading books together out loud, snuggling while you sleep in in the morning, or getting on the floor to color and build Legos, so you can not only soak up the summer sun, but soak up your kiddos while you can, as well. .
