Reagan Orchestra Invited to Prestigious Music Conference

T

he Ronald Reagan Chamber Orchestra is invited to perform at the 73rd Annual Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra, and Music Conference in Chicago, IL December 18-21, 2019. The orchestra was selected to perform at this prestigious event through a recorded audition process submitted in March. Over 200 candidates from around the nation auditioned with the Reagan Orchestra being only the fourth San Antonio Orchestra to receive an invitation to the conference in the last 50 years.

More than 18,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 30 countries are expected to attend the Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra, and Music Conference. Reagan Orchestra Director, Sixto Elizondo, said, “I am so proud of the kids, and their accomplishment, and we are honored to be included in the conference. Having travelled to Chicago with the Reagan Band in 2018, I know the kids are going to have a life changing experience.”

The invitation, though a prestigious honor, results in a considerable financial obligation for each member of the ensemble and the booster organization exceeding $1,300 of unplanned expenses for each competing member of the Chamber Orchestra. The Reagan Orchestra Booster Club respectfully requests the support of the Stone Oak community in requesting donations or sponsorships from individuals, groups, and businesses. Every dollar counts in changing the life of a high school musician performing on this global stage.

Waste-Free Yards Keeps Pets Healthy American pet owners collectively spend tens of millions of dollars every year on veterinary care and over-the-counter medicines for their furry loved ones. But what many don’t realize is that many pet illnesses can be avoided by simply keeping the back yard clear of pet waste.

Dog waste is more than just a smelly and unsightly mess. It’s also a breeding ground for infection—especially in dog parks and other areas where dogs frequently gather. Bacteria, worms and other parasites thrive in the waste until it’s cleaned up or washed into the water supply. Giardia, ringworm, roundworm and E. coli are examples of such inhabitants, all of which are commonly found in dog feces and are easily transferable upon contact.

When pets become sick, contagions are often times passed through their deposits into their own yard. The longer infected dog waste stays on the ground, the greater a contamination becomes. And when this waste is not picked up, pets have a high risk of catching the infection over and over again.

Roundworm, for example, is one of the most common parasites found in dog waste and it can remain infectious in contaminated soil and water for years.

The best thing pet owners can do to help keep their four-legged friends healthy and safe is to pick up after them and to do so in a timely manner. Those who don’t have enough time to deal with the mess themselves—or simply don’t want to—should consider hiring a local pet waste removal service.

We love the flash and bang of Fourth of July fireworks, but they can be a pet’s worst nightmare.

Every year, on the 5th of July, animal control officers get a huge volume of calls about pets who, frightened by the noise of the parades and fireworks, escaped from their families or dug out of their yards in a desperate attempt to flee.

When it comes to fireworks, be pet-riotic: Don’t bring your pets to events where loud noises and bright lights are likely to scare them, and be sure that all pets spend the day safely indoors.

Welcome Abigail Bush to the TGR Board After consideration of various applicants, the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District board of directors selected Abigail Bush to fill the final 12 months of retiring District 1 board member Don Reddout’s term. Reddout announced his retirement earlier in the year and the District conducted a search for a replacement. The board officially interviewed two candidates before selecting Bush.

As utilities coordinator the San Pedro Creek Culture Park Improvements Project, her responsibilities included working with electric, gas, water, wastewater and telecommunication companies throughout the project site, communicating with adjacent property owners and stakeholders, facilitating between design and construction team and creating and managing a groundwater discharge permit.

“We had two very qualified candidates for the District 1 position, but in the end, Abigail’s background in water and the environment gave her the edge,” said TGR Board President Joe duMenil.

“District 1 includes the Cities of Helotes and Gray Forest and is home to major parks and aquifer recharge features. So, we are looking forward to Abigail’s input over the next several months regarding how the District can protect the water resources in that growing area.”

“I am very thankful to the TGR board for asking me to fill Don Reddout’s term,” Bush noted. “I have dedicated my work to preserving and protecting our natural resources through advocacy of Low Impact Development, engineering with minimal impacts to natural resources, and public service. So, the mission of the Trinity Glen Rose District fits perfectly with both my professional and personal pursuits.”

Bush is a civil engineer with the San Antonio River Authority and has worked on projects such as the San Pedro Creek Culture Park, Escondido Creek Parkway, and Panther Springs Creek

Because Bush will be finishing out a term, she will be required to run for that seat when it comes up in May of 2020. District 1 is bordered on the east by Loop 1604, Culebra Rd. on the south, Galm Rd. on the west and Scenic Loop Rd. on the north.

Summer is fast approaching, and for many of our youngest residents that means they have the freedom to play outside to their heart’s content (or at least until mom or dad call them back inside). While we encourage kids to enjoy summer to the fullest, we also want everyone to stay safe. Here are a few guidelines to make sure these school-free months go smoothly: JJMake

sure your children are proactive about their safety.

Whether they’re playing at a park, swimming at a pool or riding their bikes around the neighborhood, it’s important that kids understand what types of injuries could occur during these activities and how they can best avoid them. If an injury does occur, your kids need to know what actions to take—such as alerting a trusted adult or, in the case of a true emergency, calling 911.

JJSupervise your kids at the pool. While it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your kids, it’s particularly important to make sure your children have adult supervision while they’re in the water. It only takes a second for even good swimmers to find themselves in a dangerous situation, so it’s vital that kids are supervised by someone who knows the signs of a distressed swimmer. To learn about how you can keep your family safe at the pool, visit www. poolsafety.gov.

JJSlow down while driving through the neighborhood. All residents should take note of this rule. With children out and about in full-force during the summer, you’re more likely than ever to see a distracted kid chasing after a run-away baseball or skateboarding on the streets. So slow down, be extra aware of what’s going on around you, and be prepared to stop suddenly if a child runs out into the road. Parents should remind kids that they have a responsibility to be aware of oncoming cars as well, and to be extra careful when they are on the street.

JJRemind older kids to check in with you when they’re playing without adult supervision. When kids are out on their own, it’s easy for them to forget to let their parents know they’re okay.

So establish a set of rules, such as checking in every few hours or whenever they change locations, and be firm about enforcing them. If your child has a hard time remembering to give you a call every so often, it might be helpful to have them set an alarm on their cell phone or watch so they don’t forget. It’s a great way for kids to build a sense of independence and for you to know they’re safe even when they’re not within sight.

Keep Your Home Safe While on Vacation School is almost out, and many of you will escape the daily grind and head out on a well-deserved vacation. But before you hit the road, take a few precautions so your home isn’t enticing to thieves or susceptible to fire and other disasters. Not only is having your home vandalized or burnt to the ground a highly unpleasant way to return from a trip, but it also puts the rest of the association at risk, as these problems have the potential to spread quickly throughout the neighborhood. So, before you take off, consider implementing these safety tips to keep your home and our community secure. on friends for help. Keep Your Backyard Bug-Free...Naturally Warmer months are the time for barbecue parties and sleeping under the stars, but bothersome bugs can ruin outdoor fun. Many people spray themselves and their lawns with chemical repellants to get rid of these pests, but there are natural alternatives that are environmentally friendly to your home and our association. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy a bug-free summer.

Plants like garlic, radishes, marigolds, nasturtium, oregano, sage, rosemary, cilantro and mint are easy to cultivate and can make the area in and around your garden uninviting to the creepy crawlers, as they act as natural bug repellants. Pest-control never looked or tasted so good! and wild. Eliminate stagnate or standing water in your yard; it provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes. NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.)
