A Word From The Mayor Hello Providence Village, This is an exciting time for our town! Council members and dozens of volunteers on commissions and boards have invested their time, energy and expertise to establish our town, secure our infrastructure, expand police coverage and lay the groundwork for future growth. Now we have the next bold step; a resource-style publication based out of Providence Village for our residents and area businesses. The 380 corridor is developing fast, and The Providence Village Experience helps establish our identity as a growing community with a hometown atmosphere. I encourage readers to get to know our town, shop at area businesses and eat at local restaurants while enjoying Providence Village and its growth, which we want and welcome. As we become more firmly established as a leading community in Denton County’s growth corridor, I challenge you to find ways to get involved in and become an active part of our town. There are numerous ways to participate. You can support the construction of “Hero Park” through the Providence Village Hope Foundation (pvhopefoundation.org), join a local civic group or volunteer for a school organization or booster club. Volunteering not only helps the place our children will remember as their hometown, but also adds to your experience in Providence Village. Town Council meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7:30pm. For a full schedule, visit our website (pv. town). Come out and let your voice be heard! Sincerely,

“As Close as Your Front Door”

Steve Coomes, Owner & Pharmacist

Aubrey Pharmacy is customer service-oriented and located just north of Providence Village along Hwy 377 in Aubrey. Our mission is for each customer to feel like they matter every time they are in communication with us. The business and practice of pharmacy has changed dramatically over the last few years. What used to be a locally owned and staffed pharmacy with medications, other sundries and maybe a soda fountain, has now become a marketplace of chains, big box retailers and grocery stores. The feeling of being a customer with genuine needs and concerns has evaporated with the move towards anonymous understaffing and a general lack of compassion. Aubrey Pharmacy remains locally owned, staffed and caring of individual needs. What sets us apart is our attention to detail and genuine concern for our customers wellbeing, which may even include NOT making a sale. Your experience in doing business with us is what matters most. The phenomenally high costs associated with prescription medication is no secret. If a customer is uninsured, we offer competitive pricing generated using data from the surrounding area’s average price. About ninetyfive percent of the population has prescription insurance, so the choice of pharmacy may be based on customer service since copays are generally the same wherever the prescription is filled. This is what sets us apart from other area pharmacies! One distinguishing service at Aubrey Pharmacy is same-day delivery of prescriptions to residents of the surrounding area, FREE of charge. We can also add in over the counter medications and other store items when delivering your scripts. We deliver weekdays and begin at 5pm to maximize the at-home time of our customers. Come check us out or give us an old-fashioned phone call to see if we are the right pharmacy for you and your family. We won’t leave you on hold!

Splash into Summer Safely!

Ten summers ago, I took my infant and my toddler to the salt water pool in Providence Village and was astounded at how many children weren’t able swim. I was inspired to help, so I made it my pilgrimage each summer to give back to my community by trying to make our pools safer. I offered swimming lessons in my backyard pool in Providence Village and helped as many as I possibly could during 8 weeks of summer vacation. United States Olympian Bode Miller lost his 19-month old daughter to an accidental drowning at a neighbor’s house last June. A month prior, a 3-year-old girl was the drowning victim at Little Elm Park Beach during a family gathering.

These instances are terrifying, yet they show no signs of stopping, as there continues to be horrifying stories relating to child drownings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified drowning as the leading cause of death from unintentional injuries for children aged 1 to 4. It can happen anywhere, including shallow waters and familiar places. More often than not, it’s a silent killer. As Bode Miller said, “It can happen in the blink of an eye.” Swimming safety tips:  Know who is at risk  Know how to recognize a distressed swimmer (body position is feet down, head underwater; drownings are silent, not thrashing)  Learn CPR  Avoid alcohol or designate a “water-watcher” for your group  Teach children to swim  Use certified life jackets if you swim in large bodies of open water

FEATURE STORY

A Dog’s Tale

Walking these streets so long...

By Ami Yarbrough & Amber Williams

That night, I pondered how he could escape so many times and wondered if he would become my escape artist. What had I gotten myself into? Was I prepared for this? I soon learned that it was a common occurrence for dogs to escape their houses in this seemingly perfect neighborhood. In fact, it was so common that there was a Facebook page for lost pets. Residents would post sightings of loose dogs almost daily, and more often than not, they’d be reunited with their owners by day’s end. Lilly ... Living life on her own terms.

It was the summer of 2014. I had just moved into the “Village,” a quaint little community that reminded me of the Stepford Wives. All the colorful, pretty houses in a row. Seemingly perfect. Move-in day arrived, and the unpacking furiously began. My kitchen was a hot mess with boxes, paper and bubble wrap everywhere. I was tired before I had even started. Amongst the chaos, I looked up. There it was, a beautiful dog at my back door wanting in. I couldn’t let the poor soul suffer in the sweltering Texas heat, so I invited it in and was determined to reunite it with its owners. “It” was Axl, the dog that had escaped his backyard many times and would be mine by the end of the day. Yes, his owners surrendered him to us on the spot, and he has been our sweet, spoiled love bug ever since. 10 - Providence Village Experience

But there was one, the “free spirit” as she was often referred to. The one who got away and lived life on her own terms. The one who refused capture and was too smart to be fooled. This dog was street-smart for sure and outwitted everyone she encountered. She was not to be caught. She traveled back and forth between the three main phases of the community, usually seeking shelter from the heat and cold in the new construction areas. She is Lilly, the dog that quickly became a town mascot of sorts. Lilly sightings were quite frequent, always being posted on Facebook. But why wasn’t anyone doing anything to reunite her with her owners like all the other lost dogs in the area? It seemed all anyone was doing was posting about yet another Lilly sighting. Like, people thought it was cool to see her and posted about it. But where were her parents? Where did she live? I had

to get to the bottom of this. I had to help this dog! On November 12th, after another Lilly sighting and Facebook thread, I was finally able to get in contact with her owners, Ann and Lem. They had rescued Lilly, a beautiful brown and white harrier hunting dog, from the streets the year before. They seemed genuinely concerned about Lilly, continually searching for her. Ann was a Thai chi instructor in the neighborhood at the time and gladly filled me in on Lilly’s back story. It was challenging, to say the least.

was once again on the streets. Her family searched for her daily, walking and riding around, calling her name. She was nowhere to be found. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months. Lilly was nowhere to be found.

In February 2014, Lilly was sighted in the Monaco Elementary School area. Her owners put out pleas for help on social media, asking for help in catching Lilly. “She is a very sweet, shy, smart, non-aggressive dog and does not have a mean bone in her body,” her owners said of her. “She is very fearful of people Lilly’s story began in late Fall because she has been teased, chased and even shot 2012 when she was seen around the big lake in Providence Village. After many attempts to rescue at. Lilly is still a puppy (about 2 years old) and likes her, Ann started luring Lilly with food, slowly moving to find her own entertainment by borrowing shoes, boots, stuffed toys, ties, ribbons or anything left it from the front porch outside that she can play to the backyard over a “She is a very sweet, shy, smart, with. Timid yet intelligent, Lilly continued to evade capture by her family, Ann took Lilly to the vet to see if she had a microchip, concerned citizens and even local authorities. The in an attempt to reunite her with her family. own, putting food out for her whenever they saw her and trying to lure her in with treats. Somehow, she managed to survive the constant traffic, the brutal Texas summer heat and bitter cold winter nights, frequently seen taking shelter in the new home construction areas. She was observed playing with other dogs and appeared to be healthy. After those pleas for help, Jeanna, a Providence Village resident, began seeing Lilly hanging out around her house in late 2014 and started leaving food out for her. Starting by the fence line, Jeanna would gradually move the food closer and closer to her front porch. This continued for several months. She placed a trap on her porch, and eventually moved the food into the trap, hoping Lilly wasn’t too smart for her plan. In the early morning hours of January 2, 2015, Lilly took the bait and was trapped. Jeanna called Ann in the middle of the night to report the capture. Ann rushed over to reunite with her baby, and Lilly returned home to her family and two fur sisters. All was back to normal, and the neighborhood could focus on other things. For the time being, anyway. Lilly had been kept inside, where she slept and spent most of her day. For safety reasons, the only outdoor area she was allowed in was her backyard. Three months after returning home and being confined to the house and backyard, Lilly’s family finally felt comfortable taking her beyond the fenced in walls and out for a real walk. Then it happened, another Houdini trick. Lilly managed to escape yet AGAIN! Stay tuned for Part 2, coming August 2019!

HEALTH

SUMMER

Mind, Body & Soul THINK FRESH THIS SUMMER When it comes to summer, what is the first thing that you think of? The sun, swimming, cookouts, snow cones? The first thing I think of is FRESH PRODUCE. Yes, I know I might be a little different, but the thought of fresh flavorful fruits and vegetables just gets me so excited! Summer is the time for experimenting with new recipes and creations in my kitchen. A lot of people struggle with figuring out what foods to pair or mix and how to make ingredients come together in a synthesized dish. Kym Luce I can say from experience, the best thing to do is experiment! When going to the grocery store, start by shopping for the colors of the rainbow; greens, yellows, oranges, reds, purples, blues (yes there are some out there)! Once you have a variety of both fruits and vegetables start to think of combinations that sound fun like tangerines and carrots, strawberries and rhubarb, blueberries and beets. Some of these combinations make the greatest popsicles that kids love to eat. I know a lot of parents are always looking for fun ways to sneak in more fruit and vegetables! It’s almost like going back to the time of you serving baby food to your kids, think of all the random combinations that were made so kids were eating both their fruits and vegetables all at the same time. Let us not complicate it, let’s make it fun this summer and get our taste buds jumping with new flavors and creations. For more fun food ideas this summer check out Café de Luce on Facebook.

Being At Ease

If you have ever served in the military, you are quite familiar with the command “at ease.” You finally relax from a very rigid position of attention, shake your legs out, and take a sigh of relief that you weren’t the unlucky one to pass out in formation from locked knees. But do you know what it means to be “at ease” when it comes to your health? Look to the spine-one, of the most important, yet neglected parts of the body. The spine is amazing! Among many things, it allows us to walk up-right and serves as a vital housing unit and protection for our nervous system. It also serves as a shock absorber to the various physical stresses we endure on a daily basis. Over time, Dr. Kat Bryan though, abuse and neglect eventually lead to pain, dysfunction, degeneration and mobility issues. So why not give your spine the same TLC we give other parts of our bodies? This is where a chiropractor can help! A chiropractor detects and corrects misalignments of the spine, using a variety of techniques specific to a patient’s needs. Some techniques are very gentle while some are more manual in nature, but ultimately, the chiropractic adjustment aids in restoring function and mobility to our bodies, decreasing inflammation, resulting in more optimal health. Simply put: When you move better, you feel better, and you live better. Your body is “at ease.”

The Human Touch The art of massage manipulates the musculoskeletal system to promote healing and recovery. Therapeutic massage helps individuals heal from injuries, recover quicker from strenuous activity or prevent further injuries. So many people believe that they have to live with aches and pains because Hallie Crawford they’ve been told there is nothing more they can do except live with the pain. I don’t believe that. I believe there is healing in the human touch, and anyone can experience that healing. There is always hope to live a better quality of life. That ‘better quality of life’ can mean an athlete getting back on the field sooner, that mom or dad can get back into the gym or someone can simply get up out of the recliner and walk around their house a little easier. Even a relaxation massage that relieves stress can increase your quality of life. A better quality of life is different for everyone, so my approach to each individual’s recovery journey will be too.

Meditation to Change your Brain I don’t just mean change your mind, I mean change your BRAIN…that squishy gray mass of folded tissues that rattles around in our skull all day going completely unattended and noticed by most. Lea Goin You can quite literally change the structure and function of your brain by using it differently. And of course, the best way to do that is through a consistent meditation practice! Even a short one!

Imagine the brain is made up of muscles like the ones that cover our skeletal system. (This is a metaphorical way to look at the neurons and synapses and all that scientific-y stuff that is really not necessary to know for our purposes.) When you exercise one muscle group of the body more than others, it is easier to use those muscles, and your body will naturally gravitate toward using those as much as possible. Like if you have strong quads, when you squat you will naturally kick into quads over glutes, unless you add some serious focused attention. The same is true for thoughts, and on a neurological level, the little synapses between the neurons in your brain. Once they start firing and connecting it is easier for them to keep firing and connecting!
