Southeast Texas Senior Spotlight

REBECCA PETRY

Rebecca is ninety-two years young. She was born in Port Arthur and has lived in Groves for 61 years. She is a life-long gardener, up until a short time ago when she had a stroke. Fortunately, she is now recovering nicely. Her son, Hill Petry, has great memories of growing up with his mom. Hill remembers that Rebecca kissed his dad every morning when he left for work and every night when he came home from work. There were regular trips to their grandparents’ country house in Gueydan, the 4

duck capital of Louisiana. Rebecca spent hours in Rebecca’s signature meal to feed her family was steak with rice and gravy. On Christmas Eve, the kids were able to open one present. The rest couldn’t be opened before Christmas Day. Rebecca’s legacy is teaching her children how to love. She never let life’s disappointments or challenges affect family relationships. She set an example that her kids continue to follow now that they are parents. Today, Rebecca is recovering from a stroke. We all know many local seniors who never really recovered after their strokes. What is the secret of Rebecca’s progress? She and her son Hill credit her caregiver, Marvie Jackson. Marvie is with Synergy Homecare in Beaumont. She has taken a great deal of initiative and has gone over and above to provide the

highest level of care for Rebecca. When Rebecca was at her weakest, Marvie made her red beans and rice at home and pureed them for her. She brought them to Rebecca and spoon fed her. She also brought in Blue Bell ice cream and helped her put on weight and pass her swallow test. Now she can eat all of her favorites. Perhaps most importantly, Marvie showered Rebecca with love and attention. She sings with Rebecca and takes her out to pick fresh owers. She takes her to the hair dresser and helps her get dressed up for company. Marvie retired as a chef with BISD, and is looking to continue serving others. Marvie Jackson represents the kind of care givers provided by Synergy Homecare. Owner Stephanie Allen and care coordinator Ryan Straface ensure clients receive the attention, compassion, and assistance

A Letter to Grandpa Dear Grandpa, Recently, you were diagnosed with clinical depression and vascular dementia. When it all started, I couldn’t believe the words that seemed to be randomly thrown at me from all directions. I felt like I was suddenly out of touch with the reality that I held ever so closely. Standing by knowing you wanted to hurt yourself was like being shot in the chest, and I felt like the world around me was slipping away. After you went to the hospital, a wave of painful relief washed over me as I realized that you were now safe. That relief was the only thing I had to hold onto. Later, my thoughts stopped whirling inside me, and reality was within reach again. When I was able to visit you, it was the most reassuring yet unstable feeling ever. I got to see my grandpa again; the alien that seemed to overthrow him was gone. My grandfather’s happy, sweet, and loving nature was back. You were a little out of sorts, but it was funny rather than painful, which was a reassuring, odd form of relief.

You told us countless stories of your time as a football coach for the Silsbee Highschool. It was nice to watch your eyes light up as you recounted memories from those days. You also thought it was Christmas, and you were so excited to introduce your family to the nurses and friends you made at the hospital. An indescribable kind of peace washed over me, and most of the fear I felt was gone. There were struggles, of course, as well as new pains and traumas. Listening to my mom crying over the phone late at night after hearing you had a bad day or had become aggressive was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to listen to. She really loves you; we all do. Watching grandma finally slip out of the denial she drowned herself in was a difficult thing to watch as she would only let us sit on the sidelines of this horrible game. Weeks passed, and you had good days and bad days. The “normal” grandpa finally took his place in the past as the different versions of you took its place in the present. Eventually, he too will sit in the past, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

It was a long time before I realized that my memories were just that - memories. They will always remain preserved, ready for me to visit in my mind when I need a glimpse of what once was. Right now, you are full of positivity as you always try to cheer us up. You recently took up the title of “Western Movie Specialist.” A favorite of yours is anything that has to do with John Wayne. I find it funny how you randomly quote his lines and quiz us on facts about him. It was hilarious when you quoted his famous line, “I take my corndodgers with no additions” with absolutely no context and only followed by a much-needed bout of laughter and the hearty smile we all missed and love. There will be many twists and turns throughout this journey. There will be good days and bad ones. There will be new life lessons I will stubbornly learn the hard way. There will be nights we stay up and tell stories and laugh until it hurts. There will be nights where we go to bed early just to escape reality for a period of time, crying ourselves to sleep as we go. You will always be my grandpa through thick and thin. There is nothing you could ever do or not do to change how much we love you. You have taught me so much. I hope I get to live a life like yours, full of amazing stories and strength through trials. You’re the best grandpa ever, and I wouldn’t change a thing about you. I want you to know that I will always tell your stories, and will remember the legacy that you leave behind: a legacy of love. Love you forever, Your granddaughter April 13, 1942 - March 22, 2019. Jill fondly adds, “He died peacefully and the last thing he ever ate was Bluebell ice cream.” 14

Veteran Spotlight Ed Touchet Ed Touchet was born and raised in Beaumont, graduating from Kelly High School in 1975. Ed’s life in the army started later than most – seven years after graduation. Many join the Army when they are looking for something. For some it is adventure for others it is a sense of family or community. Many just want to get away from the town where they grew up. The Army can be all of those things – an escape, an identity, a place to belong. When Ed enlisted, he was at the bottom of the Army’s hierarchical pyramid. Ed made it into the illustrious 82nd Airborne. His job was mortarman or “Mortar Maggot”. He would jump from airplanes with a heavy mortar tube and shells

strapped to him. Ed was also a “Pusher”. It was his duty to make sure everyone jumped (or he had to shove them out). During down time on base, he started taking CLEP Courses and applied for Army flight school. He was part of the 2nd rotation into the Sinai Desert in 1984. The 82nd Airborne was part of a peace keeping force during the signing of a treaty between Israel and Egypt. Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s treaty under sponsorship of American President Jimmy Carter ushered in a period of relative peace in the region. The peace was overseen by an international coalition. On his flight back, his plane flight

was delayed for mechanical repairs. A year later the same plane, Arrow Air Flight 1285 en route to Fort Campbell, crashed with the same mechanical issue killing 248 passengers and 8 crewmen. Upon return from his 6-month rotation in Egypt, Touchet found that he’d missed a call 10 days after he left notifying him that he had been approved for flight school. He had also made Corporal (E4) by this time through taking KLEP tests during down time on base (self -paced study in college level courses). Upon reporting for flight school, he was bumped up again in rank to E-5.

Ed Touchet is a tall man, and attack helicopters are tight on headroom. Ed paced himself in his course work to qualify on the more spacious Hueys. As a warrant officer, he flew Hueys for the Army across Germany. He also applied and was accepted for Officer Candidate School. At this time the Army began rolling out the Black Hawk helicopters. Early complications earned the helicopter the nick name “Crash Hawk” among army pilots. Ed was assigned to the 101st Airborne as a Black Hawk pilot. On one occasion, he flew Colin Powell. During Desert Storm, he was named a Rear Detachment Commander. Like many Army personnel, he was part of the reduction in forces following Desert Storm. He was a Senior First Lieutenant. After leaving active duty, Ed Touchet worked as a DPS officer and stayed very active with the www.SETXSeniors.com 19

tional Guard than on active duty and he racked up a lot of hours, “Guard Bumming”. He was assigned to a maintenance course to become a Maintenance Officer that added four months of active duty experience to his resume. Next came an automation course and an assignment as an Automation Officer. Ed was then sent to Information Operations and went back to active duty in Iraq as an Information Operations Officer at the rank of Major. In his 2nd 6-month tour of Iraq, Touchet became the Civil Affairs officer for 1st Infantry, the “Big Red One” in Tikrit, Iraq. Returning from Iraq, Ed resumed service with the DPS and was assigned to the state capi-

During a flight physical, he was diagnosed with stage three lung cancer. They wanted to treat him in DC, but Ed and his wife asked to be transferred back to Texas. He was treated for 16 months in San Antonio, remaining on active duty during treatment. After treatment, he was sent to become a Space Operations Officer using satellites to support troops and first responders in the US. He helped Texas officials dur-

years of active duty over a thirtytwo-years of military service. Ed Touchet also has a retirement from the Texas DPS. Looking for a way to give back to the veteran community, Ed Touchet came across the Hinchee House. The historic home is located at 1814 Park Street in Beaumont. Ed formed a non-profit to restore the home and construction is being planned now. Upon completion, the venue (next to the VFW office in Beaumont) will be used to host veteran organizations and support efforts. Touchet and his team are big believers in “Veterans Helping Veterans”. As veterans, they understand that veterans are not looking for handouts – they are looking for doors that are open to opportunity. Touchet and his group are looking for ways to protect here at home the values and freedoms they went overseas to fight for. Are you interested in historic homes? Construction? Gardening? Ed and the Hinchee House would love to make use of your expertise. Are you a member of a veteran organization or support group that is looking for a place to meet? can help them. HincheeHouseInfo@gmail. com or HincheeHouseExecutiveDirector@gmail.com. Ed is married to Caroline Touchet. His wife was born in Germany and her first language was French. They met when Ed was in the Army and Caroline was assigned to the Army housing office. Ed jokes that she couldn’t find him housing, so he married her to have a place to live. His daughter Stephanie is with Edward Jones and he has a lovely granddaughter, Isabelle. We thank Ed Touchet and all of our local veterans for their service to our nation – and to our community.

home-baked goodies in the quiet waiting area. Any time we had car trouble, Grandpa and the shop were there to fix us up. Every time we drove by to cross the tracks, the lean, tin muffler man was standing by the shop, waving to us and other passers-by. For thirty years the shop has been in our family. Having never replaced a bumper or even welded before, Grandpa bought the shop on a whim and learned as

he went. Since then, Grandpa’s work at the shop has paid for our Christmas presents, lunch dates, Easter candy, and birthday gifts from Grandma and Grandpa. Leading up to the fire, thoughts of retirement had flowed through my seventy-one-year-old grandpa’s head. However, after the fire, those thoughts fled from his mind. “I was goin’ crazy,” Grandpa recalls, “...I told my wife, ‘I can’t do this. I can’t retire. I’m not ready to retire.’” The cycle of watching TV, eating, laying down, TV, eating, laying down could never be enough for my active, serviceoriented grandfather. Additionally, tender-hearted Grandpa

had other motives for rebuilding. Emotions came crashing down on Grandpa when news broadcasters declared Silsbee Muffler and Tire a “total loss”. “That’s when I got emotional,” he said, as he quietly recounted conversing with my grandma, “...I don’t have customers, I have friends.” As a sociable people-lover, Grandpa’s

favorite part about his work is visiting with his customers! Invigorated by his deep love for and desire to help people, as well as the exciting prospect of a fresh start, Grandpa had strength to chug along at full speed and rebuild his red and white shop. A towering, new building replaced wreckage and rubble, and recently, I stepped excitedly into the bright, freshly painted and wood trimmed sitting area. Regretfully, the new shop doesn’t yet possess that old tire scent, but it will soon enough! For decades, Silsbee Muffler and Tire has been a piece of Silsbee, as it has sat by Silsbee’s ancient railroad and watched the carts roll back and forth on her switchtracks. It has provided for my family and countless other customers. For forty years it has helped pump the heart of Silsbee, taking in her citizens and send-

They treated us to a wonderful morning, and we left impressed with all of the entertainment and fellowship they offer their members. This is a very active group of seniors. During the meeting we visited, they talked about a number of upcoming outings including a casino trip, a visit to Galveston to see Bishop’s Palace, and going to events at other Southeast Texas Catholic churches. They also started the process of planning a wine tasting with our friends at Synergy HomeCare. The Senior Club also has a
