We are excited to bring you the fifth Spring issue of the premier Hill Country Weddings & Events Magazine! We are pleasantly overwhelmed with the positive response from readers of our previous issues! We are excited that we have officially made it over the five year hump. Thank you so much for your support. We hope that you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed preparing it for you. Brenda Sealy, a Boerne native and owner of Hill Country Planning, the premier wedding and event planner in the Texas Hill Country, has over ten years experience and enjoys all aspects of the industry. Brenda has dreamed of planning special events since she was little. Now that she is doing what she loves, she has decided to expand her dreams into something larger. Crystal Wiedenfeld has always had a love for fashion and style, whether it is hair and makeup or clothes and design. After doing what she loved for over ten years she opened Simply Serene Salon and Spa in her hometown of Boerne, TX. She spent years telling anyone who would listen about her fashion tips and hair trends. As sisters they put their heads together to create a

magazine where they could both grow and continue their dreams. Hill Country Weddings & Events Magazine features everything from weddings to events, style, fashion and more. Nothing could be more exciting or anticipated than a bride’s walk down the aisle! If you’re planning on tying the knot, the Texas Hill Country has proven to be an ideal location to say your I Do’s! Cris and I had been dating for five and a half years before we got engaged in September of 2017 in New York City. When we got back home to Fort Worth, we couldn’t wait to share the news with all of our family and friends and begin planning the wedding. We both grew up in Boerne and knew we wanted to get married there. It’s such a special place to both of us

as many of our friends and families still live there. Cris’s parents, Karen and Dale, were so excited and were kind enough to offer up their ranch as a venue. We honestly thought Cris’s father was more excited than anyone and already had a vision for the big day. After honeymoon showers, engagement parties, and much more celebrating, it

was finally the big day. On October 20, 2018 we had the most perfect wedding anyone could ever ask for. We started the evening out with cocktails and a string trio as guests trickled into the back yard that was decorated with a wine bar, stained glass church panels and beautiful flowers. I spent most of the morning getting ready with my girls while Cris and

It was 2007 when Cody and Allison first met in elementary school. Allison’s mom had Cody in her class. Who would have ever thought, over a decade later, they would be getting married? The proposal was sweet and private in Boerne. Allison thought she was tagging along for a photo shoot with Cody’s sister and husband. How things quickly changed

when Cody got down on one knee under the cypress trees. Their wedding will be in Boerne as well, at The Milestone, nestled in a valley near Cibolo Creek in the picturesque Hill Country. It has been a long time coming, but well worth a lifetime of love. Photos by: Jessica Chole Photography

ENGAGEMENT STORY

On December 29th of 2015 Tyler was scheduled to leave for his 6 months long basic and AIT training to begin his career in the Army. Tyler and I had been set up by friends and he asked if he could take me out on a date before he was supposed to leave. Our infamous first (and only) date was on December 27th of 2015, just two days before he shipped out. Tyler drove all the way from Fredericksburg to San Antonio to take me on a dinner and Top Golf date. What I would later find out is that he left early from his surprise going away party in Fredericksburg with friends and family to come see me. We had a blast, talked for hours, and the date was one that neither of us wanted to end, especially knowing that a second would be a long way off. I was instantly head over heels and crushed by the thought of this perfect man I had just met having to leave for six months. The first date was all it took for me to know Tyler was something special and if he felt the same way I did, he was worth waiting six months for. Two days later Tyler was shipped off to basic training and in the last moments before he had his phone confiscated, he asked for my address so he could possibly write me a letter. I waited anxiously wondering if he was thinking of me as much as I was him and if I would get a letter in the

mail. The day finally came and that first letter arrived, and so began three months of writing letters and getting to know one another in a way that so few people in our generation will ever get to experience. At the end of the three months, he graduated basic training and was then able to use his phone for the remaining three months of his training. Our relationship continued to grow through hours and hours of FaceTime calls, more letters, messages, care packages, and counting down the days until we would be together again - for only the second time. In July of 2016, he was finally home and we began to build a relationship that only got stronger each day. In December of 2017, Tyler pulled off the greatest surprise in the world when he proposed. He told me that I was going to assist him in guiding a black buck hunt, but little did I know when we got there, he would tell me that the hunt was for me and I would be getting to shoot my dream black buck. Once the hunt was over and we walked up to the animal on the ground I was convinced that I was having the best day ever and couldnâ€™t believe he had pulled off such an incredible surprise. I admired the animal and when I excitedly turned around to look at Tyler only to realize the he was down on one knee. Hunting together

is such a special thing to us and I couldnâ€™t have asked for a more perfect proposal. Due to the fact that Tyler was scheduled to deploy in May of 2018 we decided to marry in a very small ceremony on the Beckmann family ranch in Harper, TX on March 25th of 2018. Shortly after we married Tyler deployed to

the Middle East for another long 9 months spent apart. Tyler is due to be home in May of 2019 and on September 7th we will finally be getting to have our big dream wedding in Fredericksburg with all of our friends and loved ones.

Pantone has been forecasted as the color for the upcoming year. It is a vibrant color halfway between pink and orange. Luckily for all your florists, there are many different flowers that come in shades of coral (also peach, orange, and pink) that are available yearround. We cannot wait to

see what is created with this Pantone Color of the Year! The Top 5 Spring Flowers: • Peony. This beautiful bloom is an all-time favorite for brides and is the perfect mix of softness and texture, but it is a more expensive flower. • Ranunculus. Like a peony but with more edge and less

expensive than a peony but they can definitely give a simple arrangement more pop or flare. • Roses. Classic and beautiful, you can never go wrong with a rose • Sweet Pea. This purple climbing flower goes great with a lilac theme wedding SPRING 2019

or adds a great highlight color and they seem to be the spring flower this season. • Hydrangea. This flower is not easy to work with but the bloom on it, OMG. This full floral makes a great centerpiece flower.

We believe that the hard-working vendors and businesses that make weddings and events all that they can be deserve some major recognition. Our Best of the Best Choice Awards contest asks you to nominate and then vote for your favorite businesses and individuals in the Texas Hill Country that provided amazing services for your wedding or special event. You can submit entries online or by mail. The contest will have two steps: a nomination period, followed by a voting period. The top five businesses or individuals nominated in each category will advance to the voting round. Voting will take place on our Facebook page, similar to our cover photo contest. From there, the top two from each category will be determined. Invitations If you are in the middle of wedding planning, then you have likely checked out Pinterest or googled different wedding stationery suite packages. Before you buy something online or over the counter, make sure to do your research. If you have already picked out your wedding stationery and are ready to go, read on? Before you eagerly pop these fresh-offthe-press paper goods in the mail, you’ll want to research everything there is to know about properly formatting all the information typically included on the invitation. With most things wedding-

related, there’s a code of conduct to follow when addressing guests, assembling pieces in a specific order, and (most importantly!) choosing a time to get the invitations in the mail. Thankfully, these must-know wedding invitation tips will help you mail your invites without a hitch. Trust us— you’ll find this cheat sheet particularly helpful with the details and protocols. If you’re already confused, don’t be. While these invitation customs have history, there are endless ways to make your paper suite your own

but it’s important to nail down a few of the bigger, more important rules to ensure that the invitations make it into your guests’ hands safe and sound. # 1 - Get organized about a month before your desired invitation send-out date. This should be six to eight weeks before the wedding, allowing your guests adequate time to respond and ensure that you will get a reliable head count a week or two before the event. The address on a wedding invitation should be handwritten; printed labels are not appropriate (though

calligraphy done by computer directly on the envelope is gaining popularity and acceptability). # 2 - Decide if you need to hire a calligrapher or not. Depending on your handwriting and the level of formality of your wedding, you may want to have your envelopes inscribed by a professional calligrapher. (To find one in your area, ask your stationer or wedding planner for recommendations.) You’ll have to get the envelopes to the calligrapher at least two to three weeks continued on page 27

the guys got into their suits. After going back and forth with the idea, we decided to do a first look. It was such a great idea and a really special moment for the both of us. It also really helped ease our nerves! Then it was time to walk down the aisle and say, “I do.” We chose one of our best friends to oﬃciate the wedding. It was his first time, but he did an amazing job! The ceremony was short and sweet, but absolutely perfect. After the ceremony, our guests made their way down to the cabana for cocktail hour while Cris and I took photos. We really lucked out with the weather as it had been raining the whole week before the wedding, but the skies cleared up just for our special day. We had our first dance, opened up the food stations, and got the party started. The night couldn’t have been more perfect as the drinks were flowing and the dance floor was packed. As the night began to wind down, it was time for our sparkler exit. Then we were off to the hotel while our guests grabbed breakfast tacos on their way out. After that, it was off to Belize for our honeymoon! We spilt the week up and spent three nights at Blancaneaux Lodge in the mountains and then the other half of the trip at Turtle Inn on the beach.

It was the perfect way to decompress after the wedding excitement. With the help of our friends, family, Hill Country Planning, Four Star DJ, Couture Designz, Rebecca McCoy photography, CinemaStory Wedding Films, All Occasions of Texas, Class A Rentals, Cru Vintage Rentals and much more, we were able to have the most amazing celebration we could have ever ask for! How to rock your getting ready photos By: Bend the Light Photography

Brides! Let’s talk about the very first hours of your wedding day… the moments when you’ll be getting dressed, getting excited, and getting ready to GET MARRIED! As the Studio Manager here at BTL, it’s my job to make sure your wedding day photos are as bee-yoo-tee-ful as they can possibly be… from the “getting ready” moments to the final send off. Today’s post is all about how to rock your getting ready photos. These 8 getting ready wedding photography tips will ensure that your getting ready images are beautiful and stress-free. Side Note: Most of you know that Jeff and I tied the knot just 2 years ago. While planning my wedding, I didn’t give much thought to the “getting ready” portion of our day. It was easy to overlook because I was focussed on choosing the colors for

my bridesmaid dresses, the reception music, finding the perfect statement necklace, annnnd the list went on. As it turned out, the time I spent getting ready was one of my favorite portions of the day (and produced some of my favorite wedding images… see some of those photos here). So let’s get started, shall we? This is THE most important thing you can do to ensure beautiful getting ready images. Natural light is KEY! A room with several windows makes for beautiful, flattering, well-lit photos. If you are having your hair and makeup done in your room, your beauty team will love this too! Lots of natural light will allow your makeup artist to perfectly match your foundation with your skin tone. Remember, your room will be full! …Your hair/makeup

team, photographer, bridesmaids, flower girl, mom (and pretty much any female family member that loves you) will be there! Choose a space with plenty of seating and floor space so that everyone will feel cozy and relaxed. We want you to look gorgeous in your getting ready photos, and the same goes for your lovely ladies. Your bridesmaids, flower girl, and (of course) your mama should be “camera ready” when we arrive. This way, they’ll be fully dressed in the photos and will have time to help you get into your dress, put on your veil, and help with any last-minute details. With so many details and people to focus on, this one is more challenging than it sounds. We suggest designating one or two bridesmaids ahead of time to be in charge of keeping your room clean

and “photo ready.” Ask them to throw away trash, hang extra clothes, hide suitcases under beds, etc. If all else fails, we will do a quick clean up job when we arrive (we ARE a full-service photography team, after all!) but keeping things as organized as possible before we arrive will allow us more time to photograph you, your bridesmaids, and all of the getting-readyloveliness of your day.

Have your “getting ready details” ready — Your dress, shoes, jewelry, garter, and any heirlooms you would like us to photograph (For the guys: cuﬄinks, boutonnier, shoes, and tie). Be sure to remove any price tags or packaging from these items so they are ready to grab and go. We recommend asking your bridesmaids to take your dress out of the bag and place it on your wedding day hanger prior to our arrival. This will also give you an opportunity to steam out any last minute wrinkles. As soon as we arrive, we will photograph all of your special details which will allow you to continue to get ready with no delay!

Ask your florist to deliver your personal flowers to your rooms (Bouquets to the girls and boutonnieres to the guys). These should be delivered before the photography begins. When we arrive, we will photograph the guys pinning their boutonnieres and we will remind the ladies to blot the base of their bouquets after removing them from their vases. This way, your bouquets will be nice and dry before we begin the pre-ceremony photos (wet spots on bridesmaid dresses are not a good look!)

there… We’ll take care of the rest! Don’t sweat the small stuff. Allow yourself to FEEL the excitement and anticipation. We are going to capture it all so that you can relive those moments again and again.

The prep photos of your groom and his groomsmen aren’t nearly as involved, we still have a few suggestions for the guys! Their room should also be well-lit, spacious, and clean. The groomsmen should be fully dressed when we arrive, and the groom should be mostly dressed with the exception of his jacket, boutonniere, shoes, and tie. Another quick tip for the guys — empty your pockets! Cell phones, keys, and wallets make for unflattering, bulging pockets in photos.

Looks like we may all be growing our hair out this spring for some fun sleek braids and maybe even a little Texas volume. I think it must be trying to make a comeback. That is, of course, if your hair is healthy enough to do so. Some 80s inspired curls are a real thing this spring and they are kind of growing on me. Sleek braided ponies can be fun in the sun and definitely an easy wear. We are seeing some cute straight bobbies on the sides of everyone’s hair styles and can be very cute with any look, really. Lastly grab a few cute headscarves. They are using them in so many different ways that are just too cute. These are just a few fun Spring tips for all my ladies looking to change it up for the season.

Glowing fresh face is up this round and we all love the effortless approach. You can add some sheer on your eye, cheek, and lip if you like. If you are going out, the golden Smokey eye is in and looking FAB, I must say. Muted color pallets are a must if you need a little color on your face and as per usual if you want to doll it up, throw on a bright fun lip and hit the road.

Looks like head to toe beige is becoming a thing and I am going to go ahead and say “no thanks”. I think I need a little more color this spring. Animal print is making a real come back which I personally love. A real cute look is a pair of thigh high boots and an oversized sweater. Macramé and crocheted tops, any fishnet type of cover over a bra or swim suit can put you right on trend for Spring. Try and add a little polka dot look to your wardrobe, so cute. Bike shorts are something trying to take off again, and again, I still don’t find them flattering to a woman’s figure. However, to each her own.

One week before your wedding day, get a full-face wax. You’ll want nicely shaped eyebrows as well as no mustache. When you wax your entire face, it helps to keep the makeup on and maintain a fresh look.

For example, your guests’ names should be written in full on the outer envelopes; avoid nicknames or initials. Use the appropriate social titles as well, such as addressing married couples as “Mr. and Mrs.” If a man’s name has a suﬃx, write “Mr. Joseph Morales, Jr.,” or “Mr. Joseph Morales IV”; “Junior” can be spelled out on a more formal invitation. “The little things do mat-

HINDU CEREMONY RITUALS AND TRADITIONS Weddings are a celebration of the couple and filled with love. Sometimes the religion or culture of the bride and groom shape the activities of the wedding ceremony. If you are attending a Hindu wedding as a guest or part of the wedding party, you will discover the rituals and traditions that take place in the course of a Hindu wedding ceremony. Sangeet A day or two before the actual wedding there is a prewedding celebration called a Sangeet. During the Sangeet, both families come together to sing, dance and celebrate the union of the couple. Sometimes family members even give a performance. The bride’s family sing a traditional song to the groom’s family to welcome them. The word sangeet means “sung together” and helps kick off the wedding celebrations. Mehndi or Mehendi The bride’s hands and feet are painted during a mehndi ceremony with henna. During

a mehndi ceremony, henna is used to apply intricate designs to the bride’s hands and feet. The mehndi ceremony usually takes place one day before the marriage and takes several hours. Wedding Date The wedding date is determined by the stars. Using the bride and grooms’ birthdates, astrologists calculate the position of the planets and stars to reflect the union of the couple. During the ceremony, the gotra (male descendants) of both bride and groom going back at least three generations are announced. In Hindu law, a marriage

Have a good hair day—everyday! How often do you have a good hair day? If you feel like you’ve lost the battle managing your hair. Do not despair! I have some ideas to help you. You can change what your hair is saying about you with these 5 easy steps. 1) Know thy hair. Knowledge is power! What kind of hair do you have? This may seem like a simple question but if you have never taken the time to study your hair or let your hairstylist explain it to you in terms that you understand, you could be missing out on days that could be amazing hair days. Is your hair coarse and curly? Straight and fine? Wavy and thick? Each of these types has distinct and unique products with favorite tools that need to be discovered and used. 2) Assess the situation. A lot of people wash their hair every day. Your hairdresser has probably told you to wash less and dry shampoo more. I am a HUGE advocate for skipping shampoo days for several reasons. It’s hard on your hair (and probably

perpetuating your “oil” dilemma) but also because it’s time consuming and sometimes tedious. We all want more time to snuggle in our cozy beds in the morning -- at least I do. So before you just jump in the shower and lather yourself from head-to-toe, take a peek in the mirror, brush your hair, and see what it needs. More than likely you can make it at least one more day with the right products. 3) Start with a good foundation. When it is a wash day, take your time. Use your best products and blow your hair completely dry as you style it. If you know you’re not going to have time in the morning to do this, wash your hair the night before and blow it completely dry before bed. Then in the morning, all you have to worry about is the finish. 4) Trouble shooting. Don’t just assume because it’s an odd numbered day that it’s a wash day. Your best hair days could be hiding in day three, four and five! Give your hair a chance to speak to you. Maybe you

just need a dash of dry shampoo, or just wet your bangs and blow them out fresh. Maybe a quick change of part will refresh your hair for another entire day! 5) Do a midday refresher. Keep your favorite dry shampoo, hairspray, and/or sea salt spray in travel size with you in your handbag. If you don’t have room in your handbag, keep them in your car or oﬃce drawer -- a place you know you will be midday. Here’s to many more fabulous hair days!

How did you and your partner meet? I just finished my studies at 27 and wanted to see a bit of the world before starting my job as a teacher. I booked flights to Australia and New Zealand and actually met him on the third day in Lorne. We both stayed at the same hostel and he saw me and fell in love instantly and told his friends. It took me a bit longer (as always) and after also travelling through New Zealand I realized he was the one and came back to Melbourne and extended my stay and from that day on we have been together until today. It was the 14th of March 2014. We then had a one-year long distance relationship until I moved to Aus-tralia in Feb 2015 and even brought my Shetland Sheepdog with me. Now we have a little daughter of 2,5 and we are about to move to Germany together.

How did he propose? He never did. I actually decided it would be about time to finally tie the knot. He kind of agreed and when my dad booked the castle a few days later he couldn´t get out of it. But he is happy with it now and he even thanked me on Instagram for inviting him to my wedding and I thanked him for coming (We are a bit different I guess...) I also went to the pre-discussions of the wedding ceremony with the major of the town on my own (be-cause Terry was busy) and by mistake told the major that terry played tennis when he was younger. The Major mentioned it at the ceremony and everyone had a good laugh. His friends will keep teasing him with it until the end of his life they said :D

What was your favorite moment from the day? The fact that we had so much time to talk to our friends and that everyone really enjoyed themselves and lots of guests are still telling us that it was the best wedding they ever went to. Another thing that made the day just perfect was the weather. It was super comfortable and there was only a little bit of rain when we were in the dining room anyway.

Smoke in the Hills

People often ask us how we got into the catering business. I tell them by accident. My husband and I owned a small lawn maintenance business and then the drought came. We were struggling to pay our bills. I always loved to cook and Brad had been BBQing for 15 years. We decided to open a food truck. With help from my parents we found a very unique trailer in Maine. It was sided with wood and looked like a log cabin. After a bit of renovations we opened the first week of October 2011. Our goal was to do one event per month. We were at Market Days, Steer Shows, Kids Sporting events and any other place where people ate. A few months later a friend asked us to cater their momâ€™s funeral. Yes our first real catering was a funeral. We were learning as we went. That was the start of a change of direction for our business.

In 2017, we opened our tasting room. This gave us space to meet with clients and allow them to try our food and design a custom menu for their event. Last year we opened our commercial kitchen. We loved our food truck, but the small space was a challenge when cooking for large numbers of guests. Customer service is still the key to our business. Our entire family still plays a huge role. Our son Michael runs

our kitchen and is our general manager. My daughter, Nicole works in the kitchen and serves at most events. Our youngest son is in college to be a CPA and keeps my books in line. You may even see our parents helping out when we get in a bind.

Who pays for what?

For ages the bride’s family has carried most of the burden of wedding expenses but times have changed. Sit down with the family and talk about who will pay for what so everyone is on the same page and doesn’t have any surprises or high expectations of the other family members. The best way to merge both families is to make everyone feel involved. A common split of costs is the bride’s family pays for the actual wedding (venue, food, cake, alcohol, vendors, etc.) and the groom’s family pays for the events leading up to the wedding and after the wedding (rehearsal dinner and honeymoon). Find a budget that is comfortable for everyone so you know what range to stay within for the wedding festivities. south on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway towards Key West and if you continue down to Islamorada, you could stay at the amazing Cheeca Lodge and Spa. They have a great restaurant on-site and tons of couple activities like bike riding, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling - the list goes on and on. If that isn’t your cup of tea, maybe check out the Everglades. Head west towards Naples on Tamiami Trail and take an

airboat tour or visit an alligator farm, whatever makes you happy. There is just so much to do in the Miami area that you can fill everyday with quiet bliss or bustling night life. Makes me in the mood for a sunny vacation ;)

Everlasting Lov�

One of our joys when preparing each edition of our magazine is the opportunity to do an interview with a couple who have lasted the test of time. I love sitting down with the couples and gathering information of each couple’s ideas about what it takes to sustain a marriage so we can share them with our readers. Each interview we do gets better and better and we love hearing the stories of love and marriage. This month we would love to introduce you to Kathy and Don Mann. After dating for 3 years, Kathy told Don that he was the one (wink). He was her best friend and they just melded together so they decided to get married after graduation which they did 2 months after graduating. He went into the Air Force for 4 years and then started a company in the computer field. She worked at USAA and retired after 20 years. They were married on April 11th, 1969 so this April is their 50Th Wedding Anniversary. They are excited and planning to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a trip through the mountains, just the two of them, traveling and enjoying time with each other.

They were blessed with two sons; the oldest is Brad who lives in Boerne with his wife, Kelly. They own Smoke in the Hills BBQ which is an amazing local catering company. They have blessed Kathy and Don with three grandchildren, Michael, Ryan and Nicole. Brad and Kelly are in their 25th year of marriage. Their youngest, Paul is married to Kim and they have been married 14 years. They have a computer company and Kim is an RN. Paul and Kim and have 4 dogs and live nearby in San Marcos. Their advice for new couples getting married is to be patient with each other and make sure you are madly in love. Once you know you can’t live without them, you know you have found the one. They also said communication is key and make sure you are always making time for each other so you can keep the romance alive. Kathy and Don enjoy laughing with each other and keeping humor alive in their marriage. Their hobbies include tennis, hiking and traveling. They also enjoy volunteering at their church and updating their ancestry information for
