The RodeoSports Journal Welcome to the July issue of the Rodeo Sports Journal. This is our second edition and we are loving the response and feedback that we are getting from the rodeo athletes that have come across the first edition. We are still working the kinks out and are always looking for ways to improve, and ways to expand our knowledge and bring you the most up to date information in the sport of rodeo. If you have a question, a suggestion, or something that you’d like to see in our magazine, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are looking forward to working with more photographers, more event producers, and more rodeo athletes. We truly believe the sport of rodeo is the greatest sport of all time and we enjoy bringing it into your homes and on the road with you. Please bare with us while we work to get our website up and running, once it is up, we promise you’ll be the first to know. In the meantime though, keep and copy in truck, share it with your friends, and pass it along at the next rodeo you go to. We are grateful for your support and are looking forward to meeting so many of you down the rodeo trail.

On May 1, 2022, goat tyers from everywhere gathered at the Doty Rodeo Complex in Stephenville, Texas to tie goats for some big money. The competition had a payout of over $30,000 and prizes such as custom spurs, Yeti coolers, pendants, and a one of a kind goat string holder. This was Lariat Larner’s dream, for goat tyers to have a chance to win big money “like the team ropers,” her parents said. Sadly, Lariat passed away in October of 2021 and was never given the chance to tie goats for big money. Yet, it was her legacy that presented the opportunity for approximately one hundred goat tyers to win big! Lariat’s parents, Marty and Jodi Larner, are Stephenville, Texas natives. Lariat was born in Stephenville and spent some of her college years studying at Tarleton State University. Lariat first attended South Plains where she obtained her associate’s degree. Then, she went to Tarleton for her undergraduate degree. Finally, Lariat traveled up to Oklahoma State University where she was pursuing her master’s degree in agricultural economics. “She qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo at all three schools and was able to wear three different vests,” Marty said. Lariat was a gritty competitor in both the breakaway roping and the
goat tying and made the trip to Casper, Wyoming in both events during her collegiate rodeo days. While Lariat was succeeding in the arena, she also maintained exceptional grades and even graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tarleton. “Her grades were always very important to her,” Jodi said, to which Marty added, “She

Jed even helped Lariat win her last couple of rodeos allowing her to finish the 2021-2022 season as the 5th place goat tyer in the Central Plains Region. made one ‘B’ and I thought we were going to have to put her in therapy.” Lariat also participated in basketball, cross country, and track during her high school years. Lariat’s athleticism not only allowed her to win awards in all sports, but gave her the title as “the girl who could out-run her horse.” However, Lariat would always be the first to give credit to all her equine partners, especially the famous gray, goat horse Jed. Lariat received Jed as a senior present from her uncle David and he instantly became her best friend. The dynamic duo won many qualifications
to the Larner family saying, “If Lariat was here, we all know this would be hers.” Jed is now retired and enjoying life as the Larner’s prized pasture ornament. While Lariat is no longer with us in the arena, and Jed is no longer running towards a goat, the two have made a name for themselves that will live on in the hearts of goat tyers for years to come. Along with giving credit to her animal athletes, Lariat’s number one priority was giving thanks to her Heavenly Father. She shared her love for God with others by leading fellowships at rodeos with some of her friends.

Her faith is the single attribute her parents are most proud of. Marty always told Lariat that it was easy to have faith when things are going how you want them to, he claims that Lariat is now testing him of his own words of wisdom. “The last thing I told her was ‘I’ll see you after while,’” said Marty. “I know we will all be together again in Heaven - that gives me peace.” Marty and Jodi were blessed with twenty-four years of their spirited, go get ‘em, fashionista daughter. “I feel like we were shorted about seventy-five years,” Jodi said. “But, the support we have received from God and our friends and family is what keeps us going.” The Larner’s especially give thanks to the youth competitors of rodeo. Thoughtfulness is being demonstrated by young cowboys and cowgirls everywhere. “We love seeing the pink feathers,” the Larners said. “We are so honored by how Lariat has touched many people's lives.” The Larner’s would like to continue Lariat’s mission and all that she stood for: faith, friendliness, and high-paying goat tyings. The Lariat Larner Memorial goat tying is set to be an annual event that the family hopes to make bigger and better every year. “We just want to have a jackpot to honor Lariat’s love for goat tying,” Jodi said. Thanks to the Tarleton Rodeo team, Uncle David’s awesome goats, and Lariat’s advocacy for a slowly diminishing sport, goat tying is back on the map!
State Finals Texas Junior High Rodeo Association State Finals kicked off on May 22nd in Gonzales, TX. and ran throughout the week with the top 15 contestants in each event vying for a top 4 finish in order to qualify for National Finals. The week started out with a pleasant cool front that the contestants and their equine partners alike both enjoyed, by mid week the hot weather was back but that didn’t stop these rodeo athletes from performing at their best. Enoch Hall of Dilley, TX rode one for 80 points in the first round of the bull riding, following behind him for 78 points was Noah Lee of Loving, TX. Round number 1 was a good round for siblings Zaiden and Tasey Fisher of Centerville; their run of 5.180 seconds in the ribbon roping was good enough for a first place check. The girls were on fire in breakaway, Colee Cox of Tell, TX roped one right out
of the box with a time of 1.930 seconds in the short round, giving her enough points to earn the championship title. The girls continued to show their grit in every event, London Gorham of Cotulla, TX dominated in the barrel racing, she cleaned house winning every round and the short go on her grey horse, Hitman. multiple events, he tied one down in 9.330 seconds in the 2nd round of tie-down and was crowned the Calf Roping Champion at this years finals. Chute dogging was close but no one could beat Caleb Webb of Cleburne, TX on his 2nd round steer, Caleb’s time of 2.070 was fast enough to take the top time of the week. Finishing out the week and the rodeo in Team Roping was partners Haze Bruce and Denton Parrish both of Stephenville, TX. they caught one in a quick 5.620 seconds taking the win and finishing out the week. Congratulations to all of the contestants that qualified in the top 10 from their regions for Texas Junior High State Finals this year.

Finals July 26-30, 2022 Gonzales, Tx Texas High School Rodeo State Finals As the dust settles in Abilene, Texas, it is with certainty anyone can say that the 2022 Texas High School Rodeo Association State Finals was one for the books. Texas is sending some exceptional athletes to the National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyoming. Team Texas is not only looking to bring home numerous world champions, but also their seventh consecutive team championship. Last year, Team Texas broke the record for most team championships won. This year, they hope to set
the bar even higher. With goat tyers that tie sub seven second runs and tie-down ropers that can lay down an eight second run all day long, Texas is a force to be reckon with.
