11 Community Centers in Canada Using Bingo Instead of Pills to Treat Patients
Canada - Loneliness can make you not only feel bad, but it can also make physically ill. Ontario’s medical community has started a pilot project this fall in an attempt to help lonely or isolated people without medications.
Doctors in 11 community centers are skipping the pills and prescribing what they call “social
prescriptions”. Evidence says that it works, so they consider it worth a shot. Patients are sent to local bingo halls and museums, or encouraged to start knitting, fishing, singing in a choir or playing the ukulele.
The need for out-of-the-box thinking is acute. Loneliness and social isolation are growing
problems in Canada, especially among seniors. According to Statistics Canada, 16% of seniors say they feel isolated from other people.
Loneliness is not merely an emotional issue. It threatens physical health and well-being. It’s
associated with higher levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone. And as loneliness becomes more pronounced, it results in physical challenges such as increased risks of heart attack and stroke.
When it comes to meeting every legitimate need, Canada’s health-care system is already
under stress. Costs are soaring. Wait times for care are often regrettably long. Prescription drugs are expensive and, for many, unaffordable. The need for alternative — and, in this case, more holistic — approaches is obvious.
The idea behind social prescriptions is that health-care practitioners prescribe artistic and
social activities for people with mental health difficulties. It started in the United Kingdom and has spread to other places. It caught on in Montreal before Ontario decided to try it out. Who knows, maybe soon in the US doctors will be telling patients to hit the bingo hall with some friends instead of prescribing antidepressants for mild cases. (IG) 6
THE BINGO NUGGET // JANUARY 2019
Happy 2019, bingo lovers! May it be successful and happy for you and may all your dreams come true. We are happy to report that 2018 was wrapped up with a
bang. End of November, we opened Leander Bingo, which we know was
a
much awaited moment for many of our Austin bingo players. In December, we completed our scheduled Rosenberg openings by opening Rosenberg Day Bingo, right next to the already up-and-running Rosenberg Night Bingo. These two sister halls are our first halls in Houston metropolitan area and we are happy to receive such a warm and kind welcome from the local community. Our first reverse raffle in Grissom Bingo was a lot of fun and a big hit. We
are continuing the raffles monthly throughout the San Antonio metropolitan area. The January raffle will be held in Lucky Bingo on January 4th. After that, it will be Plaza’s and Megabucks’ turn. Make sure to keep up with the notices posted in our bingo halls to see the times and location of every raffle.
102-Year-Old Collecting Money for Charity by Skydiving
Weird News
Irene O’Shea may have just started skydiving two years ago at the age of 100, but she is showing no signs of stopping now. The 102-year-old great-grandmother of 11 attempted to break the record for the world’s oldest skydiver after she leapt from a plane in South Australia on Sunday. O’Shea completed the milestone jump to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease Association of SA, or MNDSA, a nonprofit organization that supports those who suffer from motor neuron disease. O’Shea, whose daughter died of the disease at the age of 67, was able to raise nearly $12,000 for the organization, according to the Adelaide-based newspaper The Advertiser. She is still raising money for the cause on GoFundMe.

healthy living
Oh it’s that time again to look forward to taking on new goals and plans. New challenges, adventures, resolutions! Oh, what’s that? You’re tired of making the same old resolutions and they’re not sticking? It’s ok. More than half of all resolutions fail, but this year – they don’t have to be yours that fails. Let’s take a look and identify the right kinds of resolutions that you can be making. You can improve your life by creating a plan and sticking to it to reach your resolutions. First, You really need to do some soul searching here. If you set a goal that’s doable, no really doable, and meaningful, chances are you’ll complete it by the end of the year. Statistics from the time management firm FranklinCovey found that 30% of resolutions don’t make it past the end of January. So let’s take a look at what makes a resolution wrong for all the right reasons. • You base it off of someone else’s timeline and what they’re telling you to change (weight loss, eating healthier, times of day you should be sleeping/moving/ working/etc.). • It’s too generic. • You don’t have a realistic plan or any plan at all for achieving your resolution. The best way to make sure your goals are achieved is to make them SMART Specific – make it absolutely clear. If you want to lose 10 pounds, say you want to lose 10 pounds rather than “I just want to lose weight;” Measurable – This can be really key when you’re trying to cut back on something like screen time. Try keeping a journal to keep progress of your goals. 10
THE BINGO NUGGET // JANUARY 2019
Achievable – Look, I know you want to go big or go home. But when you try to take a big leap too fast you’re bound to get hurt meaning that you won’t be able to see it through. Thing of smaller steps for the long haul. Relevant – Why are you doing this goal? Really, you need to ask yourself why you’re doing it and if it’s not for yourself you need to have an iron clad reason why you’re doing either taking something on or giving something up. Time-bound – Just like “achievable,” your timeline towards the goal needs to be very realistic. Focus on the small wins along the way. When you’re climbing up a mountain you have to look back and remind yourself of the journey you’ve already made rather than the destination because that can be a daunting task. In the next few months we will be taking a look at New Year’s Resolutions from journaling to getting healthy with food and fitness.

MODERN MOM
by MORGAN SIGLER
If you’re anything like me, your home is not the perfect, peaceful sanctuary you had once imagined. It can be hard to keep your house tidy and clean when you’re constantly on the go, but there are ways to de-stress your home even when you’re never around. After all, your home should be the place you go to feel relaxed with your family after a busy day at work; you shouldn’t feel more stressed the minute you get home after a long day. For some reason, during the colder months of the year, clutter seems to build up and suddenly the warmer months arrive and stuff has piled up all over the house. You’ve probably heard it before, but let me tell it to you again: the way the outside looks is often a reflection of what’s going on inside. If your place is full of clutter, your mind’s going to have a hard time staying clear. It’s so important to get rid of clutter and organize your life if you want to live positively in the present. Clutter—mental or physical—will hold you back from being a positive parent and it will make you want to escape the present (because who wants to stay in a cluttered place or mindset!). Unfortunately, decluttering isn’t always easy. If it were, we’d all have perfectly pristine homes in which nothing is ever out of place. But that’s not quite the case, is it? Even the most organized people have a bit of clutter they can do without—and clearing it will help make room for the things that are really important, as well as provide your home and mind with a nice clean state. Clutter causes stress and stress is something we definitely don’t need more of in our lives. To de-stress, it helps to declutter. Here are tips to help you get started:
16
THE BINGO NUGGET // JANUARY 2019
Get Rid Of What You Don’t Need
It can be really difficult to let go of the things you think you need, but take a look at the stuff around you and ask yourself, “Do I really, truly need this right now?” Don’t think about how someday, down-the-road, maybe, possibly you could use it. Think about right now. Most of us have things around us that we could get rid of right this moment and never think about again once they are out of sight. Donate or trash these things immediately. Don’t wait to see if you “might need it someday” and don’t allow yourself any excuses. If you don’t use it or absolutely love it (and by love, I mean love, adore, cherish, not “kinda like it”), chuck it.
Put Everything in it’s Place
Often we have a lot of clutter because we don’t have a place for things. Designate a home for every single thing you own, a place that makes sense to you (even if it doesn’t to anyone else!). Every single thing—from loose coins to miscellaneous memorabilia— should have a place it calls home. Can’t find a home for something? Then ask yourself why you have it. If it’s not deserving of a home, it’s not something you need. Once you find a place for everything, make sure you always return it to that place. It’ll make it so much easier to find what you need (saving time!) and so much less likely that you’ll buy something you already own (saving money!). It might take some time to find a place for everything, but the effort is well worth it.
Make Use of Decluttering Tools
Assess, then invest. As tempting as it is to run out and buy organizational supplies, don’t bring in anything new until you really know what you need. Once you put everything in a specific place and get rid of all the things you don’t need (which may take a while to do!), then you can go out and explore the world of organizing tools. For the office (and everywhere!), consider picking up a Epson Label Maker to keep track of what’s inside boxes, files, etc. You don’t have to spend a lot to stay organized: check out stores like DollarTree for good deals on bins and baskets.
Look out for Tips & Tricks
Great organizing ideas are everywhere—you just have to know where to find them! A
great place to start is Pinterest, where people are posting daily about new and innovative ways to organize everything. Another great resource is Real Simple, one of my favorite magazines. There are also some great tips on Martha Stewart’s organizing page. The more you read about organizing, the more ideas you’ll find that work specifically for you, making it much easier to create a decluttered space that works with your unique lifestyle.
Don’t Wait or Hesitate
Although the act of decluttering can seem incredibly overwhelming, don’t put it off. The longer you wait, the less likely it is that you’ll actually do it. Block off some time on your calendar as soon as you can and get to it. And once you get started, don’t hesitate. If your gut instinct says to get rid of something, do it. If, deep down, you know there’s more you could be letting go of, put that stuff in the trash or the donation bin.
Clutter can be lethal to your sanity. Even though it’s just stuff, an excess of it seems to take up space in your mind, preventing you from feeling relaxed and at peace, even if everything else in your life is perfectly in place. Unfortunately, decluttering can be a difficult task—and one that so many of us want to put off until “someday”—but don’t let the challenge of it scare you. Once you’ve done it, you’ll feel amazing. If you don’t believe me, try decluttering just one small area and see how it makes you feel. The more progress you make, the more you’ll realize how true this is: less stuff equals less stress. Let’s start 2019 off with a clean mind and a clean home. 2019 JANUARY \\ THE BINGO NUGGET

If you’re looking to shed a few pounds this year and you know that you’ll be thrown at a million ways to do it. You’ve tried the shakes, the watching points, the high fat diet, the low fat diet, you know the drill.
Recently a new study came out by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that participants who followed a diet with the lowest percentage of carbohydrates had the most success at losing the weight, higher resting metabolism, but also maintaining their new lower weight. Meaning, they burned calories at a higher rate when they were just doing normal things like sitting around and watching TV & playing bingo than those eating more carbohydrates would. After a full meal of carbs, researchers found that higher insulin levels were directly influencing the metabolic process away from the burning off of stored fat. This could show why obesity rates have increased since the 1970s, as dietary fats in previous diets were replaced with high glycemic foods, including refined grains and added sugars. Meaning our diets have changed so much that “But I need my bread.” Well, tone it down a bit. We’re not saying throw out everything immediately, if you think you can handle it with the temptation and just stick to one slice or tortilla, great! But chances are, you can’t. You’ve done that route before. You’ll find programs like Whole 30, Paleo, Keto, etc. The best part of these programs is you’re basically the best science experiment around. One of the reasons why cutting out carbs can really boost this effort that you’re on.
Compared with those that eat the highest amount of carbs, the group that ate the lowest ended up burning roughly 250 more calories a day. A reason for this is carbohydrates (aka carbs) release a hormone called ghrelin, which promotes the feeling of hunger and storing fat. If you’re looking for that hit of carbohydrates but that is a bit healthier for you, try the easy swaps for cauliflower rice versus regular rice. Don’t shake your head just yet – you can add spices, healthy fats, various sauces to ensure the flavor combination is the same as it would be had you were making the starchy grain itself. So is this the end all for dieting? Absolutely not. You have to figure out what works best for you. This could however help researchers when looking at insulin levels and how to assist with dietary changes, remember all of the hormones are interactive with one another.

Many of us make resolutions at the start of a New Year- exercising more/eating healthier/learning a new skill. Have you given any thought about our New Year’s Beauty resolutions? It’s easy to get caught up in the newest makeup trends and buy, buy, buy; but what we end up with is too much makeup that overflows our makeup bags. It’s that time of year to just stop and swap!
Take out all your makeup and place it on a counter,
you will be amazed at the amount of makeup that is either really old, broken, you just didn’t like, or worse you never even knew you had and it just somehow missed the trash can and got thrown into the pile.
Swap out eyeliners,

Wow! My family took a risk tonight by taking my grandmother here for her birthday. We had never been here before and my grandmother is a tad picky about where/what she eats because she has stomach issues. However, the food was fantastic and the service was good! Every member of our group enjoyed the food and my grandmother left without pain or bloating. Together we ate the chicken piccata, margarita pizza, bow tie Alfredo, and shrimp umberto. The only issue was that the room was noisy so you could not hear your company across the table. It doesn’t matter though because the food was also decently priced. We will go back.

Patrizi’s
2307 Manor Rd Austin, TX 78722 (512) 522-4834 www.patrizis.com Never had anything less than a great meal. Pasta is freshly made, the sauces are all rich but all delicious. Staff is also extremely friendly & helpful! Nick, the owner, is regularly present chatting with customers, cleaning tables, and generally just making sure the experience at Patrizi’s is top notch. Also - the space of the restaurant itself is awesome w/ covered & uncovered seating + a shared yard with Butterfly Bar - an awesome neighborhood cocktail bar. Truly awesome that the best Italian food in Austin is being served out of a food trailer in the yard of a community theater/bar!

Cafe Italia
4117 Staples Corpus Christi, TX 78411 (361) 929-5835 So tried this place for the first time today. I ordered a pasta sampler however I didn’t want the veal cannoli thingy that came with it and asked for double manicotti instead and they substituted it for me :) my other half ordered a seafood sampler plate. Our food got to us faster than initially expected which was awesome. My order was exactly right and food was hot and fresh upon delivery. Everything was delicious and would definitely order here again. Great food, great customer service!

Y’all! I did not have high hopes for this restaurant, just based on location (a strip center in Richmond, TX) I judged. I was wrong! This is authentic Italian! I ordered the ravioli, which was so rich and creamy with firm and fresh mushrooms, my friend for the eggplant parmigiana (hers was so good, she let me taste!). The pasta wasn’t over cooked and mushy- perfect al dente! I’d recommend this place for those in the area... happy hour drinks were good, the bread comes with oil and garlic butter.
