OCTOBER 6, 2018

rom their first encounter in 2011, through a love struck romance at Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Victoria and Eric’s love has only grown beyond their dreams, especially after Victoria said “Yes!” to Eric’s extraordinary proposal in December of 2017. Months of enthusiastic planning brought the couple to a truly royal celebration on October 6, 2018 in Houston, Texas, where fate had reunited their hearts. Victoria was a resplendent bride in her custom couture Michael Costello wedding gown, a sparkling mermaid silhouette with illusion and jewel encrusted details along the bodice, and a tremendous twelve-foot cathedral train. A sweeping veil, a twinkling crown from Maria Elena, Jimmy Choo heels, and the bride’s “something old” two Cartier gold bracelets completed Victoria’s truly regal look. Eric was an equally handsome vision in a Hugo Boss tuxedo, complete with wing-tip shoes and his class ring from the University of Texas, as he waited for his bride so they could meet for a “First Touch” - their spin on a First Look without spoiling the element of surprise. Before the couple could race to the altar, guests began arriving at The Corinthian in Houston, an architectural landmark that welcomed everyone with its majestic neoclassical columns and expansive staircase. Friends and family enjoyed champagne during a pre-cocktail hour before they entered the Grand Hall where white and gold Louis XVI chairs lined a golden mirrored aisle that led to the stage altar. After the six fair bridesmaids in their red gowns walked down the aisle, Victoria made her entrance on her father’s arm to the main theme of “For Love of the Game”, father and daughter’s favorite movie. Carrying an all-white bouquet of peonies, roses, hydrangeas and orchids, Victoria finally met Eric underneath a crystal and floral chandelier where they lit a unity candle and exchanged vows, and Pastor Rick Gannon of Palm Valley Church happily pronounced the couple as husband and wife!

Victoria & Eric After much applause and joyous tears, everyone gathered for tequila shots served by towering waiter ice sculptures in the cocktail area, which was decorated in red drapes and crystals, in homage to Victoria and Eric’s proposal. In the blink of an eye the ceremony was transformed into a black-tie affair to remember. Royal blue velvet draping accented the fresh white florals that floated over the mesmerizing tables of shimmering gold, while delicately flickering tea lights highlighted the crystal details and place settings that King Midas would happily sit at. The head table was a small piece of heaven surrounded by even more lush blossoms and showing off the flawless ten-tiered wedding confection of gold hand painted piping and hundreds of handmade sugar flowers, all made up of delectable white cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese frosting. The groom’s cake, a replica of the UT Austin Tower in the Longhorn signature burnt orange with an Infantry Cross Rifle in salute to Eric’s military service, was also served with dessert after the palatable four-course feast of tomato basil soup, salad, a palate cleanser sorbet, and beef tenderloin with corn patties, asparagus and mashed potatoes. The newlyweds enjoyed live music as they shared a bottle of their favorite drink, Dom Perignon 2002, a gift from the mother of the bride, and the same champagne they drank at their proposal and engagement party. After the meal was indulged by all, Mr. And Mrs. Flores took to the custom monogrammed dance floor for their first dance. They gracefully swept across the floor with love in their eyes to “It’s Your Love” by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, with surprise sparklers for the bride and an elegant dip to end the performance. Victoria and Eric then danced separately with their parents; Victoria with her father to “I Loved Her First” by Heartland, and Eric with his mother to “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw.

The extraordinary celebration continued with live music, a special appearance by Selena and Michael Jackson “head performers, confetti bombs, balloons, and all-around joy and unforgettable moments. Eric danced with his stunning bride, who let her flowing locks loose and dressed in an Old Hollywood custom Michael Costello gown, with a daring neckline, delicate feather detail, and Louboutin heels. All too soon the night came to an end and Victoria and Eric were sent off by their friends and family with confetti and sparklers as they rode off in a sleek white Bentley, anticipating their exciting honeymoon to the tropical Lanai, Hawaii. It was the perfect end to the perfect wedding that went by in a heartbeat, but they remember every special moment with their loved ones that they wish they can relive that magical day over and over again.

I

t was a clear, blue sky day on October 27, 2018 for the wedding of Erika Cavazos and Ezequiel Reyna III, who married in the late morning hours at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco, Texas. Erika was a stunningly gorgeous bride who resembled an Old Hollywood actress with side-swept curls and a long-sleeved lace Galia Lahav gown, while Zeke was a handsome groom in his sleek tuxedo and a charming feathered bowtie. The bride and groom were pronounced husband and wife before God and their family. Shortly after ceremony, the bride and groom were whisked away in a vintage car to Bar-B-Cutie Smokehouse restaurant in Weslaco; where the wedding party joined them. After lunch, the newlyweds spent quality time together on the patio at the groom’s parents’ home. Zeke always dreamed of having his wedding in his parents’ backyard, so the 11-acre property was transformed into a sophisticated tented reception à la “Father of the Bride”. A classic white wedding was created with crisp linens, delicate gold details, lush flowers and greenery. Guests began arriving for the cocktail hour which included a beautiful dove release. A string quartet filled the air with melodic notes while signature drinks of Margarita Reyna and Mr. Wonderful were served and enjoyed by all. After a picture perfect moment with their fur baby, Bentley, the bride and groom joined their guests for a lovely dinner of steak and chicken before taking to the dance floor to sway in each other’s arms to Alison Krauss’ “When You Say Nothing At All”. Erika and her father shared a special dance to “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. Thereafter, Zeke led his mother in a dance to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”. Erika and Zeke enthusiastically cut into their five-tiered vanilla almond confection and the red velvet groom’s cake, styled into a putting green and golf bag before the live band enticed guests onto the dance floor. Guests were entertained throughout the night with music, a cigar bar, a quaint swing and a photo booth. Late night tornaboda of menudo, handmade tacos, a cute coffee bar and mariachis precluded the finale. A sparkler sendoff ended the vibrant celebration and guests took home memories in “Better Together” wine glasses and handmade soaps from Dripping Springs, Texas. Mr. & Mrs. Reyna could not have asked for a more perfect evening to celebrate the beginning of their newlywed life together.

W

hen bride and groom Victoria and Marco discovered the agave field lands of Tequila, Jalisco in Mexico, they immediately fell in love with the Old World charm of the small but thriving town. Combining their love for the quaint little town known as the birthplace of the famous spirit, Victoria and Marco brought their dream wedding to life at a luxurious Tuscan-inspired resort in the foothills of Texas Hill Country, where every event space was utilized for the formal celebrations. Sophisticated colors of cerulean blue and raspberry pink, tables named after various tequila distilleries, and an entire day filled with food, cocktails, and revelry complemented the romantic and elegant style of the nuptials. Mr. & Mrs. Cepeda looked simply timeless and chic, Victoria in her one-of-a-kind lace bejeweled Pronovias wedding gown designed by the groom’s aunt, and Marco in a sleek blue tuxedo from Protocolo Novios. After exchanging their vows at the historic San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, the afternoon was filled with trips to the downtown area for a taquiza, while guests enjoyed some siesta time at the hotel resort before joining the newlyweds for cocktail hour on the Terrace, where Argentinean wine was served in homage to the newlyweds’ honeymoon destination. A gourmet dinner with selections of filet mignon and shrimp, breast of chicken stuffed with goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes, and vegan lentil and squash ratatouille, was served. Victoria and Marco shared their first dance to “Let’s See What We Can Do” by their favorite artist, Jason Mraz, and cut into their delicately handcrafted five-tier wedding confection before spending the rest of the evening dancing and sharing wonderful memories with all their loved ones. A tornaboda with menudo and pan dulce ended what was truly a remarkable and special day for Victoria and Marco.

Bee to the Blossom SOUTHERN ROOTS FLOWER MARKET

INDIE IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHY

MARISOL IZAGUIRRE PHOTOGRAPHY

A

fter 8 years in the wedding and floral industry, Southern Social Events has become a household name with easily recognizable designs. Mariana, originally began her career in the wedding business as a planner, and along with her husband Rigo Rodriguez of The Pixel Studio produced a show “Southern Weddings” on a local news channel. Mariana’s dream of opening her own floral design business, something she has always been passionate about, and thus began Southern Social Events. Wanting to bring a unique experience and offer superb service, Mariana researched local vendors for flowers, and international floral vendors. Southern Social Events has become synonymous with versatility, providing lush bouquets and catering to any budget . Ask any Southern Social Events bride and they will surely tell you Mariana has turned from florist to friend, who brides come to again and again for other special family events. This important principle of professionalism and compassion along with the wish to spread her love of flowers to all brought Mariana and Rigo to their latest and most exciting endeavor. Southern Roots Flower Market opened its doors to the public, bringing a quaint and distinct shop to historic downtown McAllen. Southern Roots Flower Market is an interactive experience, where visitors can come and select stems from a variety of fresh flowers, or browse for other unique gifts. Bringing a charming European-esque ambience, the shop invites the community to visit, learn more about flowers, hand-tie their own bouquet, and even purchase lovely items such as fresh lavender, candles, body oils, and many other natural handmade items. Mariana’s hope is to not only bring flowers into the daily lives of her community but also to spread knowledge about the preservation of bees as they are rapidly becoming extinct. Since bees are an essential part of the prosperity of flowers, as well as many other crops that we depend on, Mariana wishes to spread this awareness and hopefully raise funds for a particular bee research being held by Texas A&M University. Along with raising bee awareness, Mariana plans to give her community an even more hands-on experience with floral design classes. Southern Social Events will take care of your most memorable events, while Southern Roots Flower Market will become part of your everyday routine.

love story that won the hearts of many, and declared them the winners of The Valley Wedding Pages’ “How I Got Engaged” 2018 Contest, Monica and Darryl are truly star-crossed lovers who are blessed to have found their match in each other. Their journey that began when their paths crossed through their careers came to fruition at the outstanding venue Capilla Del Rio, where the couples’ motto “Love Simply, Love Deeply” was brought to life with a wedding celebration that glowed with understated elegance. Every detail of their special day truly signified their great love, from Monica’s 16-year-old son walking her down the aisle to their First Dance as husband and wife to Ed Sheeran’s heartfelt “The Perfect Duet”. When Monica vowed to Darryl “Whatever you face, I’ll face it with you…You’ll never be alone,” Darryl made his promise to his bride, stating “My success is your success, your success is my success…My family is your family, and your family is my family.” The newlyweds are thankful to all their family and friends who were part of their wedding day, and especially thankful to all the vendors who were touched by their story and brought their amazing talents together to create a wedding celebration that will truly be remembered in the journey of Mr. & Mrs. Rivers.

Get Coordinated EVENT PLANNING

V

that goes into creating a wedding celebration can be a tedious affair, with many vendors to contact and details to remember. This is where the need for wedding coordinators and designers has grown exponentially. To keep organized and to relieve the stress of planning her special day, a bride should consider hiring a wedding coordinator for the entire planning or just the Day Of, a beneficial service that comes with many perks.

OO A coordinator can help you keep within your budget and find you the best deals when contracting with a vendor. OO Their designing skills can create your overall wedding day look, from colors to centerpiece designs. OO They can schedule your appointments with the bridal boutique for your dress fittings and your cake tasting day with the baker.

OO C oordinators will take the lead making sure all vendors arrive on time, all decor and place settings are complete, and you, your fiancĂŠ, and entire wedding party are on time, keeping your mind at ease for the day. OO After the wedding, the coordinator can finalize payments with vendors and all belongings, such as your guest book, gifts, and dress, are taken back to your home.

As you can see, these are just some of the benefits of hiring a wedding coordinator and designer, for they serve as your guide, advisor, and miracle worker that can leave you free to enjoy celebrating your nuptials.

Let Love Grow

N

early six years ago in February 2013, with only $300 to work with, Hayley Fitzpatrick’s unabashed love for flowers opened her own floral shop which quickly blossomed into The Secret Garden Floral & Events, now a Rio Grande Valley household name in floral designs and spectacular creations that transform a blank space into a fantasy world. Throughout these six years, Hayley has brought to life the visions and stories of couples in love while keeping every flower she utilizes in its most natural state, giving every arrangement and design its own personality and lifeforce. Originally studying to be a nurse, Hayley could not pull away from the flowers that called to her, thus changing her direction to a business degree and eventually to becoming a successful floral designer.

Brides flock to The Secret Garden Floral & Events for Hayley’s devotion to every detail, from the flowers brought in from across the country and around the world as far as Israel and Chile, and her adoration for a couple’s unique love story that makes each floral design one of-akind. The Secret Garden has left its green thumbprint at weddings and special events throughout the Rio Grande Valley, across Texas, and even from New Orleans to New York City! With the demand for stunning fresh flowers rising, Hayley was proud to announce just recently Wildflowers Event Planning, a subsidiary wedding and event planning service, making The Secret Garden Floral & Events a well-rounded wedding service. Hayley’s artistic vision continues to spread as she hopes to one day offer floral arranging classes to those who share in her adoration for her petals, and who wish to become fluent in the language of flowers. If you keep a sharp eye out, you may just discover the story hidden in one of Hayley’s delicately crafted arrangements on your special day.

serendipitous encounter was how it all began for Kyle and I. We were always in the same place at the same time, but never the right time...until New York City. He sweetly proposed to me on a sunny, crisp Fall day on our rooftop in Brooklyn and I was completely taken by surprise. Our special day took place on October 20, 2018, one day before he proposed a year earlier. After a rocky start to the weekend with rain, strong winds, and cancelled flights, the weather gods finally gave us the most perfect night. A stunning palette of blush, burgundy, gold, and grey transformed the colonial-style venue into the modern and romantic wedding of our dreams. Our guests enjoyed signature cocktails of Rio Red Margarita and Eastern Standard, hors d’oeuvres of signature quail knots and an elegant sit-down dinner with “Fork and Knife” Caesar salad and smoked tenderloin. My favorite moment was listening to my family’s speeches, especially my dad’s reference to Steve Martin in “Father of the Bride.” In front of our family and friends we said “I Do”, danced the night away and ended our perfect evening dancing to Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” It was a night we will never forget!

ur love story began as an 8-hour phone conversation. Prior to that, we were only classmates amongst friends in college. Our beginnings of our romance was a connection God intended, everything simply fell into place. Two weeks into our relationship— Rafael knew that we were going to marry one day. The expectation took a long time to become reality but six years later we finally said “I do” to forever. . The wedding day was punctuated by beautiful weather in a week filled with rain and cloudy skies in October. The picturesque garden ceremony in Valencia was bathed in setting sunlight and draped in white as we exchanged our vows and rings in front of our pastor and guests. The grand reception catered by the venue echoed loudly of heartfelt words, tears, laughter, beautiful memories, and hours of dance music— all captured by gorgeous photography/videography and rolls of photo booth pictures. We could not have hoped for a more perfect wedding than this. Thank you to everyone for making our dream wedding come to fruition and witnessing our special day! We love and appreciate you all.

fter weeks of texting and phone calls, Indira and Josh’s love story began when they met for coffee on July 14, 2016. They connected immediately over long talks and laughs, and have been inseparable since the day they met. On June 9, 2017 Indira and Josh spent the afternoon at the island. After having fun in the Gulf waters Josh took Indira for a walk along the beach where she found a message in a bottle telling her how special she was for Josh and how much he loves her. “There was only one more thing to say...” the message ended, and Indira realized Josh was on one knee, holding a gorgeous ring and asking her to spend the rest of her life with him. Between joyful tears and nervousness she said “YES!” They enjoyed Indira’s favorite dark chocolate and champagne, while holding beautiful roses and watching the fireworks burst in the night sky.Our wedding day started with the lovely bride and her bridesmaids getting ready at her home while the dashing groom and his father prepared for the big day with the groomsmen. Coffee and mimosas over laughter and joyful tears were just the beginning of Indira’s childhood dream of having the perfect fairytale wedding. Indira and Josh vowed their forever love to one another with emotional tears and endless smiles at an elegant church with glittered with glistening stained glass and became Mr. & Mrs. Vogel. From the touching ceremony to the sparkler send off their wedding day was everything the couple had ever dreamed of.

Daniela Moreno & Luis Gallegos Photography by JAY CABALLERO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

T

he morning of September 22nd, 2018, Daniela and Luis were in their separate hotel rooms getting ready to make the commitment of their life to one another. The bride was surrounded by her bride squad, mother, grandmother, and aunts. The room was filled with love, laughter, and mimosas while the bride and her bridesmaids got ready. Meanwhile, the groom was surrounded by his groomsmen, celebrating the morning with Jack Daniels. When the time came a 1949 Bentley whisked the bride and her maid of honor away to the church. Soon after, the music started playing and so began the ceremony. The moment everyone was waiting for arrived when the bride started walking down the aisle with her father. The church was filled with friends and loved ones waiting to see Daniela and Luis say their ‘I do’s’. Then came the traditional blessing from the bride’s grandfather before her father placed his daughter’s hand in Luis’ and gave her away. Once the ceremony ended, Daniela and Luis released balloons out into the world to signify the start of their new beginning. At the reception, waited a combination of rustic chic with a touch of glam. After their first dance to Mathew West’s ‘When I Say I Do’, the bride danced a slow dance that broke into a remix with her father. The reception was then filled with dancing, food, and fun, and the maid of honor and best man gave their beautifully written speeches. The night ended with Daniela and Luis leaving in the classic car to start their new life with one another.

PANDORA WEDDING & EVENT PLANNING

NOCTA INVITATIONS

You’re Invited

W

hile every wedding is unique, so are the wedding invitations, which are an important detail in the planning process! Not only do they provide crucial information for your guests, they also set the tone for the ambience of the festivities to come. Whether it’s a formal black tie affair, or a casual and quirky celebration, your invitation should make a statement, literally!

Monogram or Symbol

This is an element that a couple creates together using either their initials or a custom logo to symbolize their union.

Host Names

The addressing of the hosts will depend on who is hosting the wedding, with several variations (Bride’s Parents, Groom’s Parents, Couple etc)

The Couple’s Names

You can’t have a wedding invitation without your names! Traditionally, and respectively, the bride’s name is listed before the groom’s.

Additional Details

The Details

This is where the most vital information must be seen cleanly and understandably. In order, this will be listed as the date, the time, and the location of the ceremony. To avoid any confusion, spelling out the date (i.e. Saturday, the Tenth of December) and time (Two O’ Clock in the Afternoon) will look great on formal and casual invitations.

Post Ceremony

If your reception is in the same location as the ceremony, you can simply state “Reception to follow” or “Dinner & dance to follow”.

It’s important to note the attire you are requesting your guests to wear for your celebration: Casual, Dressy Casual, Formal, or Black Tie. If your wedding is going to be a child-free celebration, a simple “Adult Reception” on the invitation will assure no hurt feelings or misconceptions. Also be sure that the font and style of wording is consistent throughout the invite.

fter meeting Mike, I finally understood all the fairytales I grew up with, because I had found my very own Prince Charming who not only loved me but my two children as his own. My happily ever after came true on our wedding day, where I spent the morning getting primped and pampered alongside my mom, my daughter, and my bridal party. When my father finally walked me down the aisle at the ceremony, I only had eyes for Mike, my answered prayer. Standing before our family and friends, Father Tom joined us in Holy matrimony, and we exchanged the most wonderful first kiss as husband and wife! After driving off in a vintage car amidst cascading bubbles, we headed to our ballroom reception where our sparkle soiree vision was brought to life with blooming plum flowers, glittering crystals and enchanting chandeliers. After an emotional dance with my father, Mike and I danced for the first time as Mr. & Mrs. Cateora to *NSYNC’s “This I Promise You”, an homage to our younger days. Then, the party began! We popped champagne, danced the night away with our guests, and shared our love for donuts and Mexican conchas with a dessert bar. Mike and I felt so blessed by all the love and support surrounding us that night as we left our reception in a sparkler send off. Forever has now begun...

O

n October 27, 2018 we created the perfect triangle of love, God, you and I. We asked God for so much within the wedding process and for the day of, and he really exceeded himself, we received as we asked and so much more. As we looked for a venue, we knew it had to be something that had meaning to us, we have always believed that nature brings happiness and peace within us. Also, we enjoy rustic and vintage things that have endless stories to tell with one single glance. All these characteristics tend to make a special connection with us and we wanted to share and transmit this to the people we love with our wedding. In the adventure of searching, we found Capilla del Rio at its virgin, rustic and natural state, and we knew we had found the perfect place when we felt emotionally connected to the place, it had everything we wanted, it was perfect in our eyes. We saw our vision and God allowed it to happen by using our love and chemistry towards the venue as our muse, at that point we knew we were planning our dream wedding. After a a rainy week, we arrive at Capilla del Rio on our wedding day to clear skies, with weather that was perfect and unbelievable, right then we knew things would start falling into place. It all began with my parents and I going down the beautiful long stairs between the natural foliage leading to a cozy capilla that transported you to a little town in Mexico, the perfect setting for our ceremony we thought. I entered the capilla and as we saw each other, we knew that nothing else mattered to us, it was as if it was only us along with God, creating

OCTOBER 27, 2018 a special bond. After that first look at each other we did not pay much attention to the details. Our family and friends began to understand the journey we wanted to bring them on, we saw it in their faces, at that point they were not just spectators, they were there, right there within our adventure. The rustic Spanish hacienda and lake as our reception view, while a guitarist playing his Spanish and Mexican boleros as people drank their sangria really set the tone, you could feel the energy, it really brought joy to us all. Our family and friends could not only see our love reflected within our smiles, but also-within every single thing surrounding them, every decision was made with love and thought to detail. The romantic table setups were made of beautiful greenery and passionate colored flowers and candles, our cake was simple yet elegant as was the wedding, the groom looked like a prince and I felt like a princess in my ball gown dress, the music was so much fun that we all danced so much it made a mess of our hair, shoes and clothing, but we didn’t care, it was the time of our life. We did have the wedding of our dreams, but we did realize that all those wedding details were indeed only a plus to the true significance of a wedding. The most precious gift we already had, it was our strong and pure love. If your love and relationship is healthy then everything else will fall into place, the emotional love we felt that day and every other day is undeniable, everyone feels it and this is why our family and friends were able to live the adventure with us. There was so much happiness that day, that it made for a perfect celebration of love.

ur wedding was a marvelous matrimony of two individuals from opposite sides of the world coming together -the groom from India and the bride from Roma, TX. The cozy church held many family members and friends that both the bride and groom had not seen in years. It was a beautiful sight to see all our loved ones come together in celebration of our unity.

Details

After the ceremony, it was time for fun! The remainder of the evening included music from live Spanish guitarists, a DJ and a mariachi band. There was much fun and lots of dancing, the evening went by quickly and before you knew it menudo was being served at the wee hours of the morning. We could not have imagined a better night and are grateful for such a beautiful experience.

ur love story definitely started unplanned but it was inevitable. As cliché as it may sound, it was like two magnets that could not be pulled apart. In front of our closest family and friends, we decided to come together as one and never to part. bustled, we walked out to a gorgeous reception filled with the most fragrant and beautiful array of perfectly placed florals, something a girl could only dream of. A custom Spanish inspired dinner waited for everyone, as the lively music of the mariachi band filled the air. It felt as if everything had been blessed. As the stunning sunset hit the sky, the elegant chandeliers, glowing amber string lights and natural outdoor beauty really set a romantic yet festive mood. From the decor to the food, the music that filled the air to our one-of-akind cake and even the perfect weather with a cool breeze, everything came together in harmony and turned out incredibly. My husband and I could not have asked for a more picture perfect wedding to celebrate our love for one another.

ur wedding would not have been possible without the love and support of our families. Our wedding could be described as Simple, Elegant and Fun. We wanted to incorporate unique elements to make our wedding reflect who we are as a couple. We picked our wedding venue based on our love of the outdoors and the RGV. Once Amanda Seanz, owner of The Grove, walked us through the venue we knew this would be the place where we would say “ I Do. Almost a year and a half later with the guidance of Pandora Wedding Events and our families, we married on November 3, 2018. We decided to express the joining of two spirits becoming one with a whiskey barrel ceremony. We loved the idea of a whiskey ceremony so that on our first anniversary we can invite our wedding party back to celebrate our marriage by drinking the now aged whiskey. We incorporated yard games and an outdoor bar for our wonderful guests. We wanted our guests to remember our wedding as FUN. We had friends and family travel near and far to celebrate with us. The magnificent entertainment of Mariachi Maripoza was a gift from the Gomez Family. The presence of Mariachi Maripoza at the wedding was meaningful in so many ways to both families. We wanted to keep some Hispanic tradition within our modern wedding. We are so thankful that our family requested that we keep with the Hispanic tradition of the Dollar Dance. This tradition was special in the sense that it gave us time to spend an intimate moment with our loved ones. Our family reminded us of their love and support for us as a couple. We both laughed, cried and will cherish those little moments. Through all of that, one of the most meaningful moments of the wedding was reading a beautiful handwritten letter from my soon to be husband. He expressed his love and excitement of sharing the rest of our lives together. I read that letter twice before the ceremony knowing this was just the beginning to the rest of our lives as Mr. & Mrs. Gomez.

lear blue skies, light sea breeze in the air, warm sand under your feet as you walk down the aisle to the love of your life…

Yes, it is your wedding day on a gorgeous beach overlooking ocean waters! With the summer months just around the corner, brides in the Rio Grande Valley are finalizing the last details for their upcoming nuptials. Some couples will be having their celebration on the lovely shores of South Padre Island, Texas, a tropical destination close to home! The Texas Gulf Coast has been a very popular choice for summer brides and grooms who can’t get enough of the sand and surf. South Padre Island has prided itself on being the summer hot spot for vacation, weekend getaways, and special events. The stunning views of early sunrises and playful waves have been the inspiration for many

great venues and restaurants to open their doors so that you can enjoy all that is South Padre Island. Wedding and event venues on SPI have fabulous packages that give you great options such as a ceremony on the beach, a memorable photo session at various landmarks that dot the island, and, of course, fresh seafood for your reception meal. Nevertheless, the biggest reason South Padre Island is the choice for beach weddings is that it is right in our own backyard. And you don’t have to worry about traveling immediately after the reception is over because you can relax in one of the many excellent hotels and simply bask in the sunlight and dip your toes in the water, even while you’re still in your wedding dress! No need to bring out the passports or the travel guide- South Padre Island is the perfect setting for you to be wed amongst the ocean waters and charming seashells; shoes are optional.

Then, God looked down on us and said “Enjoy”. He broke away clouds, brought out the warm sun and gave us a gorgeous blue sky for our wedding! Jonathan and I recited our vows to one another while smiling nonstop, for we knew it was just the beginning of the rest of our lives. One of our most precious wedding gifts was our guests of family and friends who traveled from as far as Dallas, New York, Washington, and even London! They brought so much love, laugher and energy, and amazing dance moves. Their attendance made our wedding so much more special having them celebrate with us. Everything from our delicious wedding confection to the gorgeous flowers and poppin’ music, our beachside nuptials were an absolutely perfect day.

luxurious stay fit for royalty, the magnificent site that is Casa de Palmas Renaissance Hotel has been an attraction for hospitable service in McAllen, Texas and the Rio Grande Valley for 100 years. Seeing the city grow throughout the 20th century, Casa de Palmas Renaissance Hotel is overflowing with rich history and stands proudly with welcoming arms. After the arrival of a new railroad in 1905, the city of McAllen began to develop as farming and agriculture started to bring business to the South Texas area. When 12,000 soldiers were sent in 1916 to the border to control damage and trouble bandits had caused, a rise in business occurred to accommodate the growing population. Thus, in 1918, the Casa De Palmas was built as homage to Spanish missions with a red-roof tile, solid bricks, and

arched doorways. Over the next several decades the hotel has seen many patrons, including big names such as Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. However, in 1973, the opulent hotel was devastated by a lightning strike fire; in turn, the hotel was rebuilt in the original style and continued to serve the ever-growing Rio Grande Valley. The full-service hotel features newly renovated guest rooms, on-site restaurant and bar, 24-hour state of the art fitness center, a stunning courtyard pool, and up to 6,500 square feet of event space. Once described as an elegant blend of Texas hospitality and Spanish accent, its endurance throughout McAllen’s history has proven Casa de Palmas Renaissance Hotel to be not only a success in our community, but a place where anyone can call “home.”

Colorful Culture HINDU WEDDING TRADITIONS

B

right colors, bejeweled details, and dynamic music are just some of the elaborate details of the amazing culture that is Hindu weddings. Hailing from exotic India, Hindu weddings are filled with tradition and significant moments that bring together couple and their families. Known to last for days, a Hindu wedding is consisted of many beautiful ceremonies and rituals that play into the newly pronounced marriage. Prior to the actual wedding day an entertaining event is held by relatives of the bride and grooms, known as the sangeet, where both sides come together to sing and dance, welcoming each other into their families. This revelry is followed by another ceremony called a mehendi, usually held the day before, where the ladies from both sides apply henna to the bride’s hands, arms and feet, as a way of wishing the bride good health and prosperity, relieving her of any wedding-related stress.

A bride’s wedding attire is a stunning red, signifying her prosperity and fertility, while the groom dons a turban called a safa. On the day of the wedding, the ceremony begins with the bride and groom exchanging floral garlands and joining their parents and the priest under a canopy called a mandap. Around a small fire that symbolizes the viability of the ceremony the couple joins their hands in a ritual known as the mangal phera, while offerings are made by the parents, siblings and newlyweds. Depending on the cultures, the couple will either have their hands or garments tied together before walking around the fire together before a red-orange powder is applied to a section of the bride’s hair, symbolizing she is officially a wife. A large and lively reception follows the ceremony with exquisite food and music and dancing to keep you on your feet all night long. Hindu weddings are a spectacular celebration of love, tradition, and the unity of families, a perfect example of the thriving Indian culture.

“Love is a fruit in all seasons, and within reach of every hand.” MOTHER TERESA

Feed Your Soul

O ANETTE | MIGUEL PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEOGRAPHY

riginally studying for a bachelors of science in biology, Michelle used baking as a stress reliever, a way to take her mind off of the rigors of studying, and escape from the demands of school and studying. A beautiful passion she shared with her mother who would always do the baking for her extended family. After sharing the fruits of her labor with her church community it became abundantly clear that this hobby had suddenly become a calling. Her path was suddenly changed from medicine to medicine for the soul. A single Thank You card from a friend and client is what turned the tables for Michelle, in an instant Iris Street Bakery became a reality. Named after the street she grew up on, Iris Street Bakery, is a subtle nod to her family especially her mother who has always supported her dreams. When a close friend, one whom asked Michelle to be a bridesmaid, also commissioned her first wedding cake, she rose to the challenge, using a friends’ cooler, and precariously balancing a 60lbs, 4 tier confection all the way to the reception hall, another switch was flipped.

In that pinnacle moment she knew that the next step would be culinary school. So she packed her bags and moved to Austin Texas to study at the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Studying the old world style of French cuisine and pastries Michelle expanded her repertoire from the lively Caribbean flavors she had previously leaned towards. After her formal training she accepted a position at the famed Archer hotel but a seed that had been planted long before lead her home, where she focuses all of her time building her clientele in the RGV and Central Texas. She plans to open a brick and mortar location in the RGV in the near future.

ocrates once emphasized the importance of attaining health and physical strength in order to achieve one’s goals. This Greek principle inspires many people to live a healthy and happy lifestyle, including Barbara Guerra and Dr. Antonio Esparza, owners of McAllen’s newest fitness complex Arri Fitness. Suitably named after the Greek word “ari” which translates to “the best of all”, Arri Fitness is the brainchild of two former gym owners who wanted to give the community a state-of-the-art facility that would motivate and inspire them to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Both Barbara and Dr. Esparza, who enjoy working out, wanted every person who walked through Arri Fitness’ doors to feel welcomed and inspired and not intimidated by a gym experience. Personally attending to every detail when constructing and designing the facility, even trying out every piece of top fitness equipment themselves, Barbara and Dr. Esparza made sure everything you can find in Arri Fitness, from the latest machinery to a refreshingly cool eucalyptus towel at the end of your workout, is an essential part of your wellness plan and goals.

P

lanning a wedding can often be a hectic time for a bride, there are so many details to take care of! While the turmoil of wedding planning can cause easily a lot of stress, it is important to take time to care for yourself. These tips can provide the perfect amount of relaxation for when the planning process gets to be too much!

OO DON’T BE AFRAID TO DELEGATE You can’t handle everything by yourself -- as super as you may be. Weddings are major endeavors, so enlist friends and family to help make place cards, tie bows onto favors, and run errands. OO STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR FIANCE Under the pressure and stress of planning a wedding, it’s easy to lose touch with the person you love most -- your groom-to-be. Schedule date nights, be it a dinner out or a movie in, to squeeze in some quality alone time. OO MEDITATE It’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Clear your head of worries. OO SOAK IN THE TUB A nice, hot bath will relax your muscles and your mind. For optimal stress-quenching results, add a bath salt that’ll moisturize your skin and help you loosen up with a soothing scent.

OO READ A BOOK There’s no better time to score a page-turner than the few months before the wedding day. A good book can take you to another world for a while and give your scattered brain a rest. OO TAKE CARE OF YOUR YOURSELF If you haven’t already upped your prewedding workout routine, here’s good reason to: Exercise has positive emotional and psychological effects. OO TAKE A YOGA CLASS Or better yet, sign up for a package of yoga classes a month or two before your wedding. OO START A JOURNAL There are books specially targeted to guide you and your partner with pages that prompt you to document everything from how you met to your shared future goals. OO GET A MASSAGE The perfect way to relieve tension. Why not try a technique you’ve never experienced before. OO HIT THE SPA Find a spa in your area that offers a day package (some even offer special bridal packages), sign up for treatments that you love or have never tried before, and enjoy a day of total relaxing indulgence.

fter a five-year relationship and months of planning and dreaming about the big day, our wedding had finally arrived! The rehearsal dinner and day of preparations took place in an elegant hotel where my bridesmaids and I were glammed up for the day’s festivities, while Benjamin and his groomsmen spent the morning at our new home. Our emotions ranged from calm and collected to excited nerves until it was finally time to make our way to our wedding ceremony at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Pharr, Texas. Accompanied by our bridal party, parents, grandparents and padrinos, Benjamin and I solidified our marriage before God in the presence of our family and friends. After the ceremony, guests headed to the Mediterraneaninspired event center for cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres. Benjamin and I were in awe at the first sight of the venue; from the gorgeous entrance adorned with burgundy and blush flowers to our one-of-a-kind metal art monogram, our wedding was everything we desired and more. After mariachis performed and dinner was served, it was time to get the party started! From our unforgettable first dance, to the father-daughter dance and presentation, the night couldn’t seem to go any better. The fun celebration continued as guests danced the night away and shared in all our joy and happiness. Thanks to our wonderful wedding day vendors, every detail was fulfilled and fell into place flawlessly. Travels to our honeymoon destination of the Turks & Caicos Islands quickly followed the next day and our honeymoon was filled with fun and relaxation. The trip was that much more special because we took with us beautiful memories of our wedding day and the promise of our future together as husband and wife!

ugust 18, 2018 marks the day our love story was forever sealed. Three months later looking back, I can vividly envision the commotion of our wedding day festivities and how the universe transpired to make our special day a memorable one. That day started at 5:45 a.m. with bridal hair and makeup, and after two failed attempts to manage my curly hair into a beautiful bridal updo, I was suddenly reminded of all the advice given to me from family and friends and had faith that my day would be special no matter the circumstance. I can gratefully say that my wedding day was exceptional. Having our favorite people be part of our big day was magical. We were blessed to have every single person we cherish witness our union and commitment as we exchanged vows. The most memorable moments of my day include: my groom taking my hands and professing his love to me, our grand entrance as Mr. & Mrs. Joe and Letty Vasquez, our romantic first dance and our cake cutting session. These moments will forever be engrained in our hearts and are a slice in time I wish had never ended. A love letter written to me from my groom on my wedding day sits on my dresser as a reminder of our love and our amazing day. 8.18.18 is an infinite reminder of a day where two families and two hearts became one.

O

urs was a friendship that grew into something much more. I was a freshman in high school when Wyatt Keller walked into my life—and my English class. While there might have been a little bit of flirting, we stayed great friends. It wasn’t until our junior year that Wyatt escorted me to my car after a volleyball game and asked me to be his girlfriend. A year later, we graduated high school together and went off to the best university on planet earth—Texas A&M! After four years of being great Aggies, making amazing friends, and graduating together, I stayed for graduate school while Wyatt began a new chapter in Dallas. After one year, nearly 18,000 miles of driving, and many memorable weekends, Wyatt decided to make March 4th the most memorable of all. I spent that Sunday preparing for school and doing household chores when we decided to go to the driving range that afternoon and hit some golf balls. On our way home later that afternoon, despite my sweaty and makeup free look, Wyatt parked the car, got out, and asked me the most important question of our lives. After getting down on one knee, he pulled out the most beautiful ring I had ever laid eyes on and asked me to marry him. Somewhere between the joyful tears and smiles I said, “YES!” The seven years we have been together have been the best years of my life! I can’t wait to spend forever together and continue a life full of love, adventure, and support. I love you with all my heart Wyatt Alexander Keller! I am so excited to become your wife on January 19, 2019!

t all started at the Blue Box in San Antonio with a compliment from him and an eye roll from her. After striking up a conversation about music, concerts, traveling and food, the pair realized it was worth meeting a second time. Bryan began a career in the United States Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate, entering in 2007 and leaving in 2011, now focusing on automotive mechanics. Elissa began her career as a Fraud Investigative Specialist with USAA in 2015 and found a home with the company. The match between the two seemed odd at first, with Bryan’s quirky and fast paced personality versus Elissa’s laid back and reserved nature, but the couple found they had more fun with each other than with anyone else. Bryan proposed to Elissa on Thanksgiving afternoon in front of her family and their pet cat Lilly, they are excited to celebrate their special day with family and friends.

uring PSJA North’s last football game, where Mateo is a varsity coach, I found it odd that my family, including my mom who traveled down from San Antonio, came to see the game. But I didn’t think much of it and continued to support Mateo and his team. After the game I joined the coaches and their wives and girlfriends for a group photo. For some reason everyone wanted Mateo and I to take a photo together. Confused but happy to please we posed. Then everyone began to yell “Turn around!” When I did, I found the cheerleaders holding a large banner that read “Will you marry me?” I turned back and saw Mateo on one knee with a small ring box in his hands. The moment went by so quickly but I will never forget happily saying “Yes!” It was a precious and meaningful moment, not only because my family was there, but Mateo, known to be shy, stepped into the spotlight just for me.

t seemed like Jenny and Alex were always meant to be; the parents of both the bride and groom to-be were friends before the two were even born. Many years later, and with a little help from fate, Jenny and Alex met one night out with friends at a local restaurant. Through a mutual friend Alex introduced himself to Jenny, and the very next day they went on their first date. The two have been inseparable ever since, and their love story can be described as a romantic comedy, enjoying more laughter and happiness in their time together than their time apart. On December 28, 2017, in a surprise proposal, Alex got down on one knee and asked Jenny to marry him in front of family and friends. The couple wed in Rio Grande City on December 22, 2018.

inger never believed she would find true love, but always knew she had a special friend she could always count on to be there for her. Matthew was her best friend of three years, and one day, while bowling together in January 2017, he summoned up the courage to kiss Ginger, saying “I have been waiting for you to realize I am here,”...and the rest is history. Right before Christmas, without Ginger knowing, Matthew had gone to her father and her two oldest daughters for her hand in marriage. So One perfect day at the beach they luckily came upon a sea turtle release at Isla Blanca Park, where Ginger found a sand dollar and Matthew spotted a starfish. When Ginger to turned around to snap a picture, she found Matthew on one asking “Will you marry me?” After many happy tears Ginger said “Yes!” with all her heart. Ginger and Matthew already feel like the luckiest people in the world because they have won each other’s hearts, a precious and priceless gift.

ne fateful afternoon at HEB of all places is where we met. Wine and the intervention of a sweet old lady is what brought us together. Michael proposed on our 1 year anniversary of dating. I had a feeling it was coming and he knew that. He had the whole day planned. After dinner and even a trip to HEB without a proposal, I thought it might not happen, then while relaxing at home he took our dogs out and then called for me. When I met him at the front door he was down on one knee with the ring on our fur baby’s paw and asked me to make him the happiest man on earth. He knew I had an idea he was going to propose so he had to surprise me somehow and didn’t want to be cliché and propose to me where I thought he would.

hristopher and I met u n c o n v e n t i o n a l l y. . . through video chat of course! Our mutual friends were video calling each other and Chris took notice of me in the background of their video call. He yelled “Hey who is that?!” and we both stole our friend’s phones to start our own conversation. He asked me for my number and invited me on a brunch date. We met in person the next day, our first date! Our brunch date turned into a 5 hour long conversation sitting at the restaurant together talking about everything! We immediately hit it off and have been inseparable since then. Within six months of dating, Christopher proposed to me on the steps of the McAllen Convention Center after tricking me into thinking we were just there for photos! He told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and presented me with an engagement ring that was more beautiful than any ring I had envisioned in my head! We are both very excited for our future together and I couldn’t be more proud to have him by my side as my future husband.

eeting each other was not accidental, only meant to be. The year after our courtship, our engagement began. Without my knowledge, Luke planned to propose to me in his own special way, asking my father for my hand. He invited my parents to come to San Antonio and join his parents to share this memorable moment. Early on Saturday, April 27th, Luke asked me to take a walk with him, along with our dogs. As we strolled through the streets of our neighborhood, he appeared a bit nervous. When we returned home I began walking towards our front door, I glanced back to look for Luke, and found him holding a little gray box in his hand. He proceeds to get down on one knee asking me to be his wife! I have never witnessed a bigger sigh of relief the moment after I said yes! Cars passing by congratulated us with honks of love! We begin our adventure on March 2, 2019, exactly 2 years from the day we met.

y boyfriend and I planned a trip to New York City mid December. I was raised in NY and he had never been. So it felt like the most wonderful opportunity to visit. As soon as we arrived in New York, it started snowing steadily as we made our way to The High Line. We asked a couple walking by to take and photo and then video. As soon as the video started, he got down on one knee. It was such a surreal moment and everything happened so rapidly. I said yes before he asked me. In fact, he didn’t get to ask me until after the video stopped. I also picked up the ring before he did and put it on. After I apologized for stealing the moment and he said “I wouldn’t have it any other way”. He truly is my soulmate, the calm to my chaos, the thoughtfulness to my impulsiveness, and now my fiancé! I cannot wait to marry him!

oe and I met in college 7 years ago; we’ve been through it all together and I am so thankful to have such a loving man by my side. Seeing that I was overwhelmed with finishing my master’s degree, Joe organized a trip to Aspen, Colorado, one of my favorite places ever! There was a 3-mile hike to a lake I had been wanting to venture for the longest time in that area. After driving there and realizing the road was closed so you’d have to hike an additional 6 miles, Joe convinced me into it with motivation and positivity. It took us more than 4 hours to arrive, where we found the lake and its surroundings completely frozen over! Although I was disappointed, I still took in the gorgeous sprawling mountain view. I then turned around to find, to my utter surprise, Joe on one knee. It was right then and there, that I said “Yes!” to my best friend!

We went to the New Orleans Saints vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game that night and with all of the excitement from the Saints winning the game we were pumped. We went back to our hotel and went to the roof top pool, over-looking the city. I turned around and there was Ben down on one knee asking me to marry him and of course I said Yes! We will tie the knot in our favorite city enjoying what makes it unique on March 10, 2019 in New Orleans, LA.

One on One with Bartolo “Buddy” Valastro CARLO’S BAKE SHOP & BUDDY V’S RISTORANTE

A

t the spectacular Grand Opening of Carlo’s Bake Shop & Buddy V’s Ristorante, our Publisher Leticia Guerra-Cantu joined the famous Cake Boss, Bartolo “Buddy” Valastro, for a relaxing chat about cakes and family.

What’s the most amazing cake you’ve ever done?

LGC:

LGC: And

you did it big!

BV: Yes we did; a restaurant and a bakery! BV: From a wedding perspective? There’s been so many! I’ve always been a cake artist where I didn’t only have one style. So if I LGC: Well, I brought my sister here for her birthday.. wanted to paint on details, if I wanted to put sugar flowers…I did everything! It’s kind of what’s in the trends and what the new use BV: How was it? of colors in cakes is today. LGC: So brides let you be a designer? BV: The way that I brainstorm with a bride is I hear your likes and things such as “Show me your invitations; tell me about your venue, your centerpieces.” I figure out your style, your fashion… and try to incorporate that into the cake. I’ll actually show you pictures and see what cakes you like, and then I’ll come up with a cake, with bits and pieces, and create something unique for you.

So it would be difficult, then, to say what is a favorite [cake] that you’ve done? LGC:

LGC: It was wonderful! The service was incredible, we had a wonderful time. More importantly, I looked around and I saw the family pictures. That is very much like [both] the Italians and the Hispanics, us being all about family. BV: A lot of the inspiration behind the restaurant, the flavors and everything, is from my family. A lot of these rare my wife’s recipes, my aunt’s recipes, my mom, my grandmother, my dad. So, we wanted people to come in and feel like you’re eating in my kitchen. LGC: It did feel that way. I understand that everyone connected in the business is your family. I think it’s beautiful.

BV: It is! There have been so many cakes. My favorite cake I ever did of all time was probably the Transformers cake. It was a life BV: A hundred percent. It’s all about family. It always has, it always will be! size Transformer that had hydraulics and lights! LGC: Thank you so much Buddy, it was such a pleasure! LGC: So, why McAllen, Texas? BV: Why not? I get asked that a lot, “Why we did McAllen.” We’ve BV: A pleasure to see you, thank YOU! had a lot of success throughout Texas, and we have a huge fan base in Mexico. Coming to McAllen was a way for me to test the Mexican market and service the people of the Valley. It’s kind of a two-for-one; so it’s why we did it.
