Fight the Flu 3 Ways To Help Your Family Stay Healthy This Flu Season BY MEGAN WILSON It seems like last flu season just ended, yet here we are again. Almost everyone I know caught the flu (or some other virus) last year, so protecting my family from it this year has been on my mind! There are lots of conflicting ideas on how to keep from getting sick. Many professionals even disagree on what works and what doesn’t. I’m still not sure if antibacterial types of soaps and sanitizers do more good than harm. So, besides the obvious idea of getting a flu shot, here are three simple and surefire ways to safeguard your family this time of year.

Exercise and a Healthy Diet Everyone can agree that eating well helps our bodies feel better and

fight better. I sometimes fall short when it comes to making sure my kids eat a healthy diet. Their distaste for vegetables and love of sugary processed foods make mealtime a struggle. My daughter recently decided she doesn’t mind green beans and blueberries. I’ll patiently keep offering better foods and hoping her princess shaped multivitamin will be good enough for now. Thankfully, exercise is something my girls enjoy! According to one study, researchers found that exercise stimulates the movement of immune cells and prepares them to fight invading pathogens. In other words, the more your children exercise, the more ready their immune systems are for battling bacteria and viruses.

Sleep A lack of sleep doesn’t just make our kids irritable and unreasonable, it can also affect their immune system’s ability to fight off illness. The CDC recommends schoolaged children get at least 10 hours of sleep daily. I have found that ending screen time a couple hours before bedtime has helped my daughters fall asleep more easily.

Hands Off! We all know and teach our children the importance of hand washing (especially after using the restroom and before eating). It is also important we teach them to keep their hands away from their eyes, nose and mouth. I know, that seems impossible with busy young kids, but explaining to them the ways

germs spread and giving lots of reminders will help! I wish you the best of luck this flu season. If you do catch the flu anyway, use it as an excuse to make some fun new sick day traditions. I still cherish the days of laying on my blanket covered “sick couch” watching Wheel of Fortune with my mom, and eating broccoli and cheese soup from Bumdoodlers. Still, don’t forget those flu shots!
