Men are pitiful when it comes to going to the doctor. I know because I’m in that category too. Over 70% of the medical appointments at the Good Samaritan Center are for female patients. Why? Because men treat annual physicals like almost all of us treat our dental health—we only go when we are motivated by fear or pain.

There’s a great irony in the fact that I work for The Good Samaritan Center, a charitable medical/dental/counseling clinic, and yet I am one of those typical guys who ignores getting an annual physical. Or at least I used to be. Oh, how I have judged others for not taking care of themselves or getting something checked out only to be convicted of my own hypocrisy.

I finally started getting an annual physical in my mid-40s because of a health scare my older brother experienced. He was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease in his mid-40s and one day it occurred to me that I should probably start getting myself checked too.

It’s scary to go that first time. What will they find? Will I have diabetes? How’s my cholesterol? Do I really want my weight to be officially documented? If something is wrong with me, I’d rather not know and let ignorance be my ally.

I finally had to submit to two basic facts: 1. If I go in and there is something wrong, the earlier they catch it the simpler and less-invasive the treatments will likely be.

2. If I’m healthy now, they can use my blood results and records to compare to later results as I age. Doctors call this getting a baseline.

Did you know that you can develop chronic diseases over time? For example, in your 30s you might be perfectly fine, but as you age you can develop something like pre-diabetes. If you catch the pre-diabetes as soon as it starts to happen then you can likely make lifestyle changes that will head it off and slow its progress. The longer you slow the progress the less medication you’ll have to take, and you’ll have fewer complications down the road. But it will ONLY happen if you know early.

I laughed out loud at one of the questions they gave me on a piece of paper at my last physical: I feel past my peak – Y/N. Ha! Yes, I feel

past my peak. As I close in on 50, I feel the changes happening with age. I am an avid cyclist, but I’m not as strong as I was in my 30s. My wife and I moved ourselves last year. I swore I’d never do that again.

It’s okay. It’s natural. But I also have to admit that these are just the changes I can see. There are all kinds of things happening within my body that only scans, tests, and examinations by professionals will reveal.

If you are insured, your insurance probably covers an annual exam so take advantage of it. If you are not insured, and you think you might qualify for the Good Samaritan Center’s services then contact us to get set up for your first visit. And if you have that little nagging thing that you’ve been ignoring, I encourage you to go ahead and get it checked out. Ultimately, ignorance is not bliss—it’s a trap.

To talk to Pat Gonzales, whose infectious laugh has been missing at the Stone Oak Trader Joe’s in San Antonio, where she works, you’d never know what an ordeal she’s had to endure during this past year.

It all began when the results of an annual mammogram led to her ultimate diagnosis: Stage 0 DCIS breast cancer.

It was her breast cancer oncology surgeon, Dr. Kathryn Wagner who presented her with the options: a lumpectomy or bilateral mastectomy.

Pat asked, “If I was your mother, what would you recommend?”

Opting for a lumpectomy, the procedure led to the discovery of yet, another group of cancerous cells. The mastectomy was inevitable.

She soon found out that she would not have to face ordeal alone.

Besides Dr. Wagner Pat credits doctor Dr. Ramon Garza of PRMA Plastic Surgery and Dr. Lisa Livingston at Avestee Women’s Imaging Center, with helping and comforting her every step of the way.

“Everyone all along the way has been informative, caring and compassionate.

For example, at the end of my first visit with Dr. Garza, I said, ‘Everyone expects me to curl up in the corner and cry. I haven’t and I don’t have time for that I just want this behind me.’ He very calmly and compassionately said, ‘You do know you can, though.’ I thought that was sweet.”

She is equally thankful for all the love and support she’s received from friends and family, especially her husband, Phil.

“The love and support of my husband has been far above anyone’s expectations. He has been to every doctor appointment, asking questions I didn’t think of. He took care of me during my recovery in ways I wouldn’t think most men could do.”

Gonzales urges women and men, to get regular checkups and never to be in denial about what could be going on with their body.

“In today’s world so many things can be taken care of, especially if detected early!”

Through her radiant smile and positive attitude, she is quick to admit, “I’m still having a difficult time accepting this.”

Recently, Pat Gonzales attended her first support group meeting.

Christmas is Comingthe Cactus is in Bloom

Along with watching for Santa’s arrival, waiting for the Christmas cactus to bloom is one of my annual Christmas traditions.

My plant is eight years old and blooms in vivid fuchsia, a non-standard hue associated with celebrating Noel.

I bought my plant as a 2-inch pot from a local big-box store for 99 cents and stuck it in on the kitchen window sill, where, I am ashamed to admit, it received lackadaisical care for months.

Despite inconsistent watering and being totally root-bound, Chris (that’s my plant’s name) bloomed profusely that first Christmas. And has continued to do so every Christmas since, although my level of care has improved considerably.

Luckily, my initial neglect was part of the appropriate cultivation for this tropical plant.

Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera bridgessil) is also called the Orchid Cactus and is one of several so-called holiday cacti that bloom around their day of observance (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter). These plants, called epiplhytes, are members of the Zygo-cactus family, most of which are native to Central and South America and thrive in tropical environment similar to orchids’.

They have flattened, leaf-like segments called cladodes that are modified stems, and they are one of the various plant species requiring environmental cues to flower. Photoperiodism is the internal mechanism that regulates this timing. It occurs when plants initiate blooming (or other growth activities) in response to specific periods of light and dark.

To insure appropriate seasonal blooming, in September and October your Christmas cactus plant should be kept in a cool room (around 50 degrees F is ideal), with bright indirect light during the day but total darkness for a minimum of 8-10 hours at night. Professional growers keep their Christmas cactus in total darkness for 12 to 14 hours each day to ensure holiday blooms.

Do not over-water your Christmas cactus. Too much water can cause buds to drop off. Of course, good drainage is essential. In general, allow the top inch or so of soil to dry to the touch before watering.

During September and October, water a little less often, but don’t

allow the plant to totally dry out. If soil pulls away from the side of the pot, then it’s too dry.

Christmas cacti like humidity, so a glass of water can be set nearby to evaporate. Or you can set up a humidity tray by filling a waterproof saucer with pea gravel, adding water halfway up the gravel, then setting the plant’s pot on the gravel. Some sort of trivet under the humidity tray will protect the surface area.

In early November, apply some 0-10-10 liquid fertilizer to help stimulate blossom production. A second application can be made in February; and during the April to September growing season, it’s a good idea to fertilize regularly with an all-purposed liquid houseplant fertilizer.

One caveat: never use a fertilizer with a nitrogen ratio higher than 10 percent.

After the Christmas holiday, allow your Christmas cactus to rest in a cool room with limited water for about a month. Do not apply any fertilizer in January.

The time to pinch back or shape your Christmas cactus is when new growth begins appearing in March or early April. Early spring is an ideal time to repot your plant if it seems overly crowded, remembering that this plant blooms best if it’s slightly to moderately pot-bound.

Spring is also a good time to propagate some new plants. The easiest way is to cut back a single segment and plant it one-fourth its length in a pot of peat and perlite, or peat and sand. Place the cutting in bright indirect light and keep the soil lightly moist. The cutting should show signs of growth in two or three weeks.

When the cuttings have rooted, repot them in good potting soil and set them in a sunny indoor location or outside in semi-shade. Too much direct sunlight can burn the leaves.

I have a cutting from my sister’s 21-year-old Christmas cactus. It blooms a bright, true red. I can hardly wait until next Christmas.

Have Yourself a Techy Little Christmas

Some people are just hard to find the right gift for. From stocking stuffers to extra special gifts, this list should conjure more than visons of sugarplums this holiday season. Here are a few suggestions to get you pointed toward gifts that will delight the techie people on your list.

The folks at Apple have stacked the list this Christmas with three new iPhones and the series 4 Apple Watch.

These items along with improved operating systems and the updated line of tablets and laptops are not the least expensive but to many they are must-haves.

Bake Some Lovin’

Cookies – I love ‘em!

They’re like little portable cakes, but not as complicated to bake or as messy to eat. They’re good with a glass of milk or a cup of tea, shared with a friend or alone with a good book. Any time, any place is just right for a cookie, especially the holidays.

Here is one of my all-time favorite cut-out cookie recipes. It’s got seasonal pumpkin-pie spices – cinnamon, ginger and cloves – and yields enough cookies for all the bake sales and gift baskets on your list. I generally use a heart cookie cutter, which is a traditional shape for these spicy Swedish cookies. Feel free to use all your holiday cutters: pumpkin for Halloween, turkey for Thanksgiving and gingerbread kids for Christmas. Varsågod!

GINGERSNAPS (Pepparkakor)

Makes about 20 dozen small or 10 dozen large cookies Ingredients: 10 cups 1 lb.

3 cups 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon 2 tablespoons

all-purpose flour unsalted butter, softened sugar ground cloves ginger cinnamon ground cardamom baking soda dark corn syrup

Sift flour into a mixing bowl and set aside.

Combine butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl.

In a small saucepan, mix 1 1/2 cup water and remaining ingredients, bring to a boil and pour over butter and sugar mixture.

Stir until sugar is dissolved.

Add flour about one cup at a time, blending well after each

addition.

Store well-covered in refrigerator overnight.* Dough will be

quite soft but will harden overnight.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Roll small amounts of dough at a time on a lightly-floured

surface to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes.

Bake on ungreased cookie sheets at 375 degrees F for 6 to 8 minutes, or until well-browned.

Let cookies cool on sheets on wire racks.

Place cooled cookies in airtight container in cool, dry place.

If desired, cooled cookies can be decorated with Royal Icing.

*NOTE: Dough can be kept, sealed in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Die Künstler (The Artists of Fredericksburg)

Art Show Written by Susan Tracy A long-time Fredericksburg art tradition continues: on November 9-11, 2018, Die Künstler von Fredericksburg (“DK” for short) one of the area’s premier nonprofit arts organizations, will hold its 26th annual exhibition/sale, featuring original works by some 60 of its member artists. This year the popular weekend show will return to the newly remodeled historic St. Joseph’s Halle at 212 W. San Antonio Street in Fredericksburg.

Aside from its annual November weekend show, DK provides a number of other exhibiting opportunities throughout the year to showcase the diversity and creative energy of its artist members to art patrons and to the general public, including a year-round rotating display of paintings in the lobby of the Fredericksburg Theater Company.

While the subject matter of works in DK’s exhibition is as varied as the artists who create them, most of the paintings on display reflect on and celebrate our special Hill Country surroundings: local landscapes, the area’s agricultural traditions, wildlife, native flora. In addition to the wall exhibition displaying over 200 framed paintings in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor and mixed-media, a large selection of unframed original paintings in bins offer yet more buying choices for art lovers on a tight budget.

Education is another essential component of the organization. With grant support from Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance supports, DK encourages artists’ ongoing creative development though demonstrations by noted artists working in a variety of media, at its monthly meetings. These meetings are free and open to the public, and the organization welcomes new members. DK has an extensive DVD lending library of materials relating to art instruction for members’ use, and the organization also encourages art education for young people through outreach and support of art programs in local schools, including mounting a special display of student art at its annual show/ sale.

For those who aren’t yet familiar with Die Künstler von Fredericksburg (German for ‘The Artists of Fredericksburg’), DK is an all-volunteer non-profit art organization that since 1993 has promoted the visual arts throughout the area, providing ongoing education and exhibiting opportunities for local artists. DK is supported through its modest membership dues and commission fees for artworks sold at its annual show, and by donations from individuals. Esther Benedict - Sculptor

As a girl, Esther Benedict was passionate about two things: horses and art. It was no surprise she would make one of these interests the focus of her studies; she graduated from SUNY Delhi (one of the technical colleges of the State University of New York system), with a major in horse-management with thoughts of maybe continuing to veterinary school.

Then in January 1979, she picked up a copy of Western Horseman Magazine and saw an ad for farrier training. For the next 16 years, Esther worked as a blacksmith who specializes in shoeing horses, which includes in-depth knowledge of hoof pathology as well as experience in hand-making and fitting horse shoes.

She rose to the level of Certified Journeyman Farrier with the American Farrier’s Association.

“I got to be around horses, plus I learned a lot about working with hot steel,” she said.

“While I was making horseshoes by hand, I became fascinated with how pliable hot steel

was. It was an incredible medium that could be bent, hammered and shaped anyway I liked it. When I rasped (filed) the metal, I discovered a rainbow of colors that changed with the (metal’s) temperature.”

“Being a farrier was perfect training for me as a sculptor,” Esther said. “Shaping the horses’ hooves honed my visual abilities, and of course I loved working with the metal. The next phase was set, and I turned my creative juices toward sculpture.”

In 1991, she reduced her farrier duties to half-time and devoted herself to learning how to sculpt in metal. A self-taught artist, Esther said for next couple of years she was an art and sculpture-machine where she developed a signature style of “line sculpture,” drawing, three-dimensional animals with carefully shaped rods of ¼” – 3/16” steel.

She turned to art full-time in later 1993/ early 1994, and she traveled “from Sacramento, California, to Massachusetts” selling her sculptures mainly focusing on horse expos.

That was then. Although her reputation as an artist began with her line sculptures, Esther was not afraid to explore other media and styles. She also works in clay for casting in bronze.

“My passion is to bring art into this world that inspires people and brings joy to the viewer,” she said. “ Since animals are her first love, it’s no surprise horses are often represented in her sometimes larger-than-life-sized pieces, but her sculptures also feature many other animals, including bears, bobcats, jack rabbits, birds and a particularly handsome porcupine residing in her gallery’s sculpture garden, whose quills are made from old

steel nails.

A special highlight of her sculpture garden in an interactive piece featuring a cast-bronze tree stump that faces a life-size, cast-bronze figure of Jesus with his hands held out. The piece nestles inside a small, three-sided pavilion surrounded by trees and chirping birds. The viewer is invited to sit on the tree stump and share a moment in quiet reflection.

Esther said the idea for the sculpture came to her one Sunday morning in 2015 on her way to church, but it wasn’t until the summer of 2016 that she finally got to work on the piece.

“It was hot and the clay was getting too soft, so I rolled the working sculpture into my office because it was air-conditioned. I was working on the face, and I just couldn’t get the eyes right. After a couple of hours, I said, ‘Take my hands, God; this is your statue.’ As a sculptor, I would never have thought to make the eyes that way, but they are perfect.”

Esther currently works out of her Inspired Hands Studio in Pipe Creek. Her sales gallery and its inspiring walk-through sculpture garden sit close to the gate; her working studio is farther back.

In her studio office, she has a large map of the US and a smaller one of the world with pushpins indicating where her 107 life-size horses and more than 100 other life-size animal sculptures are displayed.

Until three years ago, Esther handled all the sculpting, production, shipping and other business duties by herself. In another “God-story,” she said she met her apprentice, Donovan Martinez, while waiting for the repairman for her forklift. She went to meet a truck at the gate, but it was Donovan’s parents not the mechanic. They introduced themselves and their son, said he was interested in art, and asked if she needed a helper. Donovan, now 20, is currently studying at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio.

Cult of the Machine: Precisionism and American Art Through January 6, 2019 Chilton II Gallery Cult of the Machine examines American culture from the 1910s to the Second World War and reveals how the American love affair with new technology and mechanization shaped architecture, design, and the visual culture of the United States. This tour-de-force presentation includes key paintings by American Precisionists such as Charles Sheeler, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Charles Demuth, and iconic works by the masters of straight photography such as Paul Strand, Berenice Abbott, and Edward Steichen. Their creations were highly structured, geometric compositions with smooth surfaces and lucid forms that sought to mimic a streamlined, “machined” aesthetic, with themes ranging from the urban and industrial to the pastoral. Reconciling realist imagery with abstracted forms, Precisionism married the influence of avant-garde European art styles such as Purism, Cubism, and Futurism with American subject matter.

FOCUS: Dirk Braeckman Through March 17, 2019 The photographs of Ghent-based Dirk Braeckman (b. 1958, Eeklo, Belgium) have a distinct stillness and quietude that counter the whirl of today’s visual landscape. Images of empty, unidentifiable interiors, architectural details, oceans, and partially obscured nude figures are just some examples of the artist’s subject matter. Braeckman’s deeply gray photographs are often abstracted, contributing to the mystery and intrigue of what his images convey while adding a sense of distance to the intimate interiors and views he depicts.

Asia, China, and Japan, with some objects featuring colored ink paintings on textile backgrounds. The garments range from a Japanese fireman’s coat to an Indian sari and a Chinese dragon robe. Asian Textiles highlights the passage of luxury goods along the Silk Road between eastern Asia, India, and places like Uzbekistan. This historical trade route led to an interchange of arts and crafts from the Mediterranean to India and the Far East.

Harry Bertoia: Sculptor and Modernist Designer

Through January 6, 2019 Mel Casas: Human presents six large paintings by the late San Antonio–based artist Mel Casas, co-founder of the Chicano art group Con Safo. Casas is best known for pointed visual statements that question cultural stereotypes and portrayals of Mexican Americans in the media. Selected exhibitions include his participation in the 1975 Whitney Biennial and, in the 1990s, the landmark traveling exhibition Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation 1965–1985. A Tricentennial Exhibition You may know his iconic furniture without knowing his name—or that Italian-born designer Harry Bertoia (1915– 1978) also produced outstanding work in printmaking, jewelry, and monumental architectural sculpture.

In 2004–5, local collectors Robert and Laura Cadwallader gave the San Antonio Museum of Art three excellent works that represent Bertoia’s achievements: a sculpture composed of bundled rods; a child’s chair formed of the wire grid characteristic of his popular Knoll chairs; and a “Sonambient” sculpture that emits sounds when struck. They are now exhibited for the first time, accompanied by several pieces on loan from private collections that chronicle the breadth of Bertoia’s artistic vision and superb craftsmanship.
