In town for the Austin City Limits Fest? Have fun, but don’t move here. The city has reached its limits. Traffic and property taxes suck, and turns out we’re politically incorrect. Texas, once part of Mexico, revolted and became an independent republic, partially because Mexico didn’t allow slavery in the 1830s and Austin’s namesake, Stephen F. Austin, felt freed slaves would be “a nuisance and a menace.” As a result, the city recently found itself on a list compiled by the Austin Equity Office of potential names to change and statues to move.
Hmm… why not?
Rename Austin Festival City. Sell the rights, like a sports stadium. SXSW@Festival City, ACL@Festival City, Formula 1@Festival City. Take some of the proceeds, buy some land outside town, and set up a rent-free reservation for anyone who can prove they don’t have to Keep Austin Weird – they made it that way. Then change that dang bumper sticker slogan to something more reflective of our current state. How about this? ROAD WORK AHEAD.

M
y ninety-three-year-old father was moving some old furniture around when he discovered a few long-lost black and white photographs. One of them was of me. From 1954. At the age of ten months. I had never seen the photo before. But as I stared at myself of almost sixty-five years ago, I saw a happy child. My father told me, “Joe, you were one happy baby!”
Maybe I was. up.
But I certainly wasn’t happy shortly after growing
And I went through long periods of unhappiness as an adult, and as a struggling writer wanting to be a success. What happened to that happy child? What happened to that uninhibited smile? Oh, it’s still here. People can see the baby smile in my adult face today. But where’d it go for so long?
My guess is, it never left.
And I’m guessing your original innocent smile is still in you someplace, too. Lately I’ve been encouraging people to look for their very early baby pictures. Not the ones where you are still in diapers, and not the ones where you are going off to school. I want you to find the baby pictures where you are showing signs of awareness and your original smile is still on your face. Get that photo and use it as a meditation. Stare into the smile. Let it expand from within yourself. Feel the original innocence of bliss today. Because it’s still there. And if for some reason you can’t easily or quickly find an early photo of yourself smiling, then consider looking at my photo. Or someone else that makes you grin or giggle. Or draw or paint one.
The point is, that original smile is not lost.

It’s in you. I used to teach a form of meditation where you imagined an inner smile within yourself. As you visualized it, it grew. Before long, you had an outer smile. Your inner child is still within you. And it is still smiling. It’s time to find it again.

Bones F
lagstaff, Arizona is a high and holy place, seven thousand feet above sea level in the four or five square blocks of downtown, straddling Route 66 in the heart of the Coconino National Forest. Overlooking town a few thousand feet higher are the San Francisco Peaks, where katsina spirits spend the winter when they haven’t been summoned to the Hopi kivas by dancers costumed in their image. You see their likenesses in shops and galleries in downtown Flag, created by Hopi and Navajo carvers, and you feel their presence as easily as you can catch a whiff of Ponderosa pines on an evening breeze. If the breeze happens to take you strolling down Route 66 on a Saturday as the sun begins to set, you might feel the slight tug of an imminent spiritual experience, calling out to your Texas roots.
Time for a margarita.
Like New Yorkers and bagels, Chicagoans and pizza, Seattle – um, Seattleites? – and coffee, Texans are big ol’ snobs about Mexican food, but since you’re standing in front of MartAnne’s Burrito Palace you figger a glance at the menu might be in order. And there they are, hanging all over the wall. Bones. Bones in dresses, in Aztec garb, American Gothic bones. A good place to sip the distilled nectar of the agave plant, tuck into some Arizona Mexican food, and watch the sun set over the railroad tracks that run straight through town – and see which of Flagstaff artist Emma Gardner’s skeletal Day of the Dead artworks might turn out to be a good October cover for a fine natural magazine, back in the capital of Texas. Easy enough. Only one choice, really. It has to be the maiden serenaded by moonlight.

Where the moon don’t shine.
She’s Marty Robbins’ Felina, Cantina Carlotta, Maria of the Flashing Eye – sockets? Her smile beckons. “Buy a girl a pulque, cowboy?” And you are hers. Okay, she’s a little thin here and there, but she has good, high cheekbones and always has a big smile, and the hibiscus blossoms tucked behind her right ear means her heart does not yet belong to another, wherever it might be. The curves of her hips, under a white skirt gleaming in the light of the full moon overhead, are anything but thin – and there you have the title of the piece. Moon Over My Hammy. (Rimshot.)
Rattle them bones.
The people of Mexico, closer to the bone and blood of the Earth, have a close relationship with death, a far cleaner one than the gueros north of the ditch. No messy zombies staggering around with body parts falling off – just good, clean bones, still hooked together and ready to put on some spiffy duds, have some fun, and hang out with la familia from All Hallows Eve to All Souls Day, Nov. 2. It’s a good time for los muertos to have a tamale or two, a sugar skull, some sweet hibiscus tea, catch up on family news and gossip, and listen to the stories about when they you were flesh and blood and bones – then take a few prayers back with them when the celebration’s over. If you really are a spiritual being having a human experience, as the bumper sticker oracle says, then have it – down to the bone. Your bones are the bones of the Earth, so rattle them. Your blood is the water of the seas, so let it flow. Your breath is the breath of the universe, so let it breathe. And when you’re done and ready to leave this rock and head for your next destination, should you decide not to take your body with you – well, your bones can still have some fun from Halloween to All Souls Day.
DANCE THE SPRINGS
Sacred Springs Powwow, November 17-18 And this isn’t the only America.
If the limestone caverns crisscrossing the Texas Hill country are its bones, the springs flowing through them are its blood. South of Austin, one becomes the headwaters of the San Marcos River. Thirteen thousand years ago it was sacred to the Coahuiltecan culture, hunter-gatherer bands, ancestors of Native American tribes in the San Marcos area. The Coahuiltecans travelled deep into Mexico, trading and intermarrying with Spaniards and Mexicans, blending the cultures that became south Texas. During creation, they say, they traveled the underworld as spirits, emerging from the sacred springs to walk Mother Earth as the People. After a spell as a kitschy tourist attraction (featuring Ralph the Swimming Pig, who wasn’t spring-broken), the springs were ceremoniously cleansed, blessed, and are now home to an annual two-day Native American powwow.
The Sacred Springs event is the first (if not only) one to feature dance awards for Aztec dancers, starting in 2017. Danzantes are known for huge feathered headpieces, the strong, fast-paced drum called a huehuetl, and stamina needed for an entire dance. When Columbus stepped ashore, dubbing the folks greeting him Indians, he was in Puerto Rico. A first-ever performance at this year’s powwow will be dances of the Taino people, part of the Arawakan Native Americans of northeastern South America, presenting ancient drumming and dancing indigenous to Puerto Rico – very different from powwow and Aztec dancing, with an impressive array of drums and communal-style steps moving and flowing with energy and beauty. There are still sacred places hereabouts. Stand in them, and feel their power. See them celebrated by those who still honor them, and see their beauty. Sacred Springs Powwow, November 17-18. Meadows Center, 201 San Marcos Springs Dr. 78666. Information, tickets, schedules: (512) 393-3310, www.SSpowwow.com
Cowboys and Indians.
The 2018 Sacred Springs Powwow, November 17-18, is the eighth annual in its current incarnation, sponsored by the Indigenous Culture Institute. It started in 1995, when local country music celebrity and attorney Lucky Tomblin, with the help of a Kiowa elder, welcomed Native American tribes of Texas back to the Sacred Springs with traditional powwow dancing, prize money, and Western Swing music and awards. It’s now the largest two-day outdoor powwow in Texas, beginning with a blessing ceremony by elders from several indigenous communities. Vendors from Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and New Mexico sell arts, crafts, clothing, and indigenous foods in a Native American Market, and presentations on Native American history and lore are offered. Dancers arrayed in beautiful regalia compete in traditional Plains divisions familiar to powwow-goers. In fact, hear the term Native American, and traditions of the Plains, Pueblo, and Woodlands tribes usually come to mind – but they aren’t the only original natives of the Americas.

BONES OF GAIA
Portals to the Ancestors by Folade Speaks Earth’s underground skeletal system is a body of illuminated, mineral-dense, often sparkling, crystals of the chatoyant family, keeping the planet nourished. Encoded within it is an archive of knowledge and downloads to work with. When connecting to Spirit Circles, information and answers can be found within this fertile element of the planet. As a Medium, I gather a few gems before each session to act as keys to open doors to those on the other side in Spirit form. Here are some proven tools, with deep gratitude for their assistance. Angel Wing Calcite. Palms to the sky, one of my top three crystals. Easter was my grandmother’s favorite holiday, and I first walked upon a bed of these babies Easter weekend a few years ago. Mostly white with hints of orange sherbet and soft yellow sunset, I found myself in awe over their winged formation. These lovely gems are delicate – buying them larger and by the pound pays off, because over time, smaller pieces fall off to the side. They connect to the Sahasrara (Crown) Chakra and call upon angels. With its golden tones, it links the Manipura (Solar Plexus) and Sahasrara, engaging your will with your spiritual light. Labradorite. If you’re clairaudient, or attempting to strengthen this birthright, labradorite earrings are a good pick. One of the primary crystals bringing forth a strong, clear message stream behind the ears, it’s also effective worn at the Vishuddha (Throat) Chakra. Labradorite has luminescent, cool rainbow tones that can be hidden or highly visible depending on where you stand. There was a time, outdoors at a Houston park praying at a fountain, I asked for a sign to appear in the sky to confirm I was heard and helped. Nothing. I started to sulk and walk away. A couple steps to the left, behind a statue, a huge and vibrant rainbow was visible. As I moved my vantage point, the rainbow appeared and disappeared. Labradorite reminds me vantage point affects answers, and it’s important to keep moving when feeling stuck. Even if you don’t see it, answers are there spiritually – movement, in the meantime, is essential. Selenite. Ever present in a lightworker’s toolbox, there can’t be too much of it. Place it under your bed, pillow, around the home. Hold onto it when doing medium, psychic, or
10
meditative work – it’s the crystal bone aligning all chakras, clearing auras and anything it touches, opening paths to clarity. When the spirit world speaks a different language and you need a translation, selenite clears all. It’s an evergiving accessory stuck into a topknot. Clear Quartz, Aura Quartz, Hemimorphite. More tried and true intuitive companions for spirit communication, psychic, and medium work. Celestite. With a name like this, it’s going to connect you to the other side and higher beings. Mimicking amethyst, its sky-blue color and soft, endearing essence reminds me of a baby. Celestite helps you remember your dreams, strengthen your intuitive nature, and open portals to the spiritual world. Herkimer. Although Herkimer is highly valued and gorgeous when polished and set into jewelry, this gem should never be worn outside sleep time. Use Chrysanthemum Stone a under your pillow, as it connects beautifully with Herkimer and Celestite, and assists in the manifestation of waking dreams. Petrified Wood. Trees are witness and backbone, antenna above and below. Petrified wood connects to systems still rooted in the ground and thriving. They’re the ancestors of live trees, akin to the ancient information library of Gaia and her inhabitants. Something feels different when petrified wood is around. The energy of a once-living vegetation system that’s crystallized seems to communicate its wisdom with the essence of an elder. When doing work based on guidance and answers, set intentions before asking. Be clear, descriptive, and say you only wish to connect with spirit working in the highest vibration of purity and truth, toward your destiny. You don’t want to open the doors for all spirit voices and messages to come through – be clear in calling out the trusted ones, who have your back. Folade Speaks is an aura practitioner and energy-clearing consultant at Nature’s Treasures in Austin, home of one of the largest gem and mineral collections in the country. www.NTRocks.com
PSYCHIC – OR SCHIZOPHRENIC? by Angela Collier, LPC Did you hear that? Did you see that? What was that? Are these questions you’ve asked? Ever shared with someone that you can see and hear people and things others can’t – and been given that look? Ever been reluctant to share your experiences with others, for fear of being deemed crazy – or worse, schizophrenic? Studies have shown approximately a third of the population see and hear things others don’t see or hear. So why don’t we hear from more people about their abilities? It’s because those abilities can become a hinderance in western society, and people who admit to them are often stigmatized.
So how do you know?
What’s the difference between having psychic abilities, and being schizophrenic? Those who have schizophrenia may not be able to differentiate between reality and visions, whereas those who have psychic abilities can differentiate between visions and everyday reality. Schizophrenics often have random stimuli, while those with psychic abilities can share information that can be confirmed, but that they would not necessarily have access to. When meeting professionally with people who tell of things they’re seeing or hearing, they often wait for a negative reaction. They’re relieved when asked about their visions and voices, and can then recognize they have a talent and aren’t crazy. We can then collaborate to find the best way to work with their psychic abilities in the world. Special talents shouldn’t cause sadness or confusion. A visit with a trained professional counselor can help you set life and career goals to help you reach your highest potential. Counselors are available when a rational voice or an outside opinion is needed. Everyone needs someone they can turn to at times to help them through life’s tests while working with their talents and abilities. FOOD SENSITIVITIES AND YOUR KIDS They may not just be picky eaters by Cecili Eckert Sarah scans ingredients listed on food packages lining the grocery store shelves. She recently discovered her daughter has developed food sensitivities to almonds, eggs, and Red #40 food dye. Frustration sets in, as she comes to realize feeding her daughter just got exponentially more difficult. Nutrition for children is a tough topic, one that can cause stress for even the most patient parents. Pleasing a child’s palate is challenging. Harder still are the tactics it takes to plan, make, and present an “acceptable” meal to children with food sensitivities.
It can seem like an uphill battle.
Sometimes, you want to throw in the towel. This is one battle you can win, however, so don’t give up – your child is depending on your guidance and support. Food sensitivities may not be true allergies, causing anaphylactic responses, but they should be taken seriously. Failing to heed the warning signals the body is sending with food sensitivities can lead to more serious issues later – especially when you consider research and anecdotal evidence suggesting connections between diet, food sensitivities, and learning disabilities and conditions like autism.
The mechanism at play with food intolerances begins with the lining of the gut – the digestive tract – that protects you from harmful microorganisms. When this barrier becomes compromised it allows for the passage of partially digested foods into the bloodstream. Because food doesn’t belong in your bloodstream, it becomes a target for immune cells to attack and tag as foreign invaders. Focusing on repairing the digestive system is crucial. This involves: • Removing offending foods, and inflammatory foods (which means almost all processed foods). • Increasing nutrient-dense, whole foods • Adding probiotics and prebiotics. • Adding supplements that heal the gut. • Removing stress and getting adequate sleep.
Healing takes time, and varies from person to person.
There are strategies that can help change the dynamics of dealing with food sensitivities. Healing begins by eliminating intolerable foods. Unfortunately, many foods that kids (or any of us) become become sensitive to are the very ones we enjoy most often. This makes eliminating these foods seem like real punishment. It’s important for your child to understand food sensitivities are not permanent, and they’re not being punished by gradually eliminating these foods from their diet. It’s easy to fixate on the list of “forbidden” foods. Words are powerful, so choose yours wisely when speaking with your kids about their intolerances. Focus instead on the list of foods that can be consumed. Help them by modeling an attitude of gratitude.
Temptation is difficult, especially for kids.
Make this new way of eating a family affair. Do your child a favor by ensuring that offending foods are no longer a staple in your pantry. Patience is key, and it’s okay to make modest changes initially, as long as you’re heading in the right direction. If you’re met with resistance with this process, you may find enlisting the help of a Holistic Nutritionist beneficial – a professional can be objective, and can help keep you, as a parent, from becoming the bad guy. With sincere and disciplined effort, however, soon enough you’ll find you’ve conquered the food sensitivity battle. Cecili Eckert is a Certified Holistic Nutritionist specializing in positive, life-changing results for IBS, Crohn’s, colitis, and food relationships, including individualized menus and structured but flexible eating programs for children with food sensitivities. CBD FAQ Marijuana and hemp, members of the cannabis family, share a lot of characteristics, with one crucial difference – the amount of psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Marijuana can contain up to 30% THC. Hemp, no more than 0.3%. Marijuana can get you really high, but hemp has such low amounts of THC it would be impossible to get high from it.
Is CBD legal?
If it’s hemp-derived CBD, which has no psychoactive effect, yes – purchase, sale, or possession of hemp CBD products is completely legal in all fiftystates (as opposed to marijuana), enjoying the rights of any legal product or dietary supplement.
Isolate or full-spectrum?
Full-spectrum (whole plant) CBD, means it contains all other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, including CBN (cannabinol), CBG (cannabigerol), and THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin), along with trace amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD isolate is simply purified CBD extracted from the cannabis plant and isolated from other cannabinoids. Why choose one over the other? You may not need the full capabilities of full-spectrum CBD, and there’s the possibility that even a small amount of THC could show up on drug testing for a job.
What are the benefits of CBD?
The more we learn about the potential of these compounds, the more it seems clear that decades of research being blocked by federal law deprived us of medical advances that are only now starting to surface. – David DiSalvo (Forbes) Clinical trials and medical studies around the world have shown powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antipsychotic, anti-convulsant, and antidepressant properties, with potential benefits for a wide range of conditions – and some believe it could be the miracle needed in the fight against cancer.
How much should you take?
A good rule of thumb is 1-6mg of CBD for every ten pounds of body weight, based on pain levels – 20-33mg for a 200-pound person, 15-25mg for someone weighing 150. Start small, increase gradually. Everyone is made differently, with a unique history of medications, supplements, and other things you put in your body. Your own body chemistry affects how you react to CBD, so it’s important to monitor your body’s reactions till you find the perfect dosage, and consult your physician if you have an existing medical condition.

ARTISTS OF THE Dead Aztec Ritual
T
Emma Kay Gardner
here was a time when you walked into any self-respecting hole in the wall Mexican food place in south Austin, and there was at least one calendar on the wall, usually for sale. Often as not, they were in Spanish, and sultry senoritas were a staple image. Actually, it was sort of the same sultry senorita, in different settings – riding a horse with lusty vaqueros looking on, fighting in the ranks of Zapata or Villa with bandoliers of bullets crisscrossing her low-cut peasant blouse, or a personal fave, the Aztec Maiden. She might be standing tall before the conqistadores of Cortez with a dashing young Aztec warrior or draped swooning in his arms, or reclined on an altar while he stares pensively at her, chin on fist like Rodin’s statue of The Thinker. (Is she sleeping, dead? Did he do it? Does he have to sacrifice her? The mind roams after an agave beverage or two.) Flagstaff, Arizona artist Emma Gardner decided to create her own calendar images, with the type of twist she put on her series of goddesses (think Kali, the Virgin of Guadalupe) with the face of – Barbie.
She stripped it to to the bone.
I had fun playing around with skeletons, then moved on to skeleton pinups, playing around with the female image. You hear about how sex sells and skin is in, but their attitude is what makes them attractive, not just their flesh. Indeed. There are 1940s pinup girl skeletons, torch singer skeletons, and hippie yoga girl skeletons in her
14
collection, but since it’s in honor of the Day of the Dead, there has to be an Aztec Ritual in there somewhere. Is that a cup of cacao he’s proffering, or is it the potion that will lay her on the altar? When she drinks it, will it dribble through her bones – or are they forever suspended in the moment
of the offering, until after the Day of the Dead? The mind roams… One thing’s for sure, though. (Two things, actually.) Beauty isn’t just skin deep – and under the skin, we really are all alike. www.EmmaGardner.com

PICK YOUR BATTLES Moving on? Let someone else deal with the stress
by Dephanie Cates
Stress is a killer, one that piles on, one thing on top of another, to a breaking point. How you treat it is imperative to wellbeing. Unhealthy habits contributing to stress are procrastination, lack of attention (or over attention) to details, unhealthy relationships, disappointment – any challenge difficult to absorb. Psychic damage begins immediately, unless you slow down to assess the situation. A step back is healthy – critical thinking, and reasoning without panic, can make the difference in how you proceed and benefit from the challenge of a stressor. Some stress can be helpful, motivating you to get off the couch and do something. Pick your battles – let go of self-imposed stress, wake up free and open to the positive side of life. This is doable.

Test yourself.
Next time you’re faced with a problem, ask if it’s stressful, or just a situation needing clarification. On a scale of one to ten, how threatening is it? Then, act accordingly. Stop and assess, and you can sail through stressful situations and come out sunny side up. One really stressful situation, often when you least expect it, is a job or lifestyle change requiring a move from one location to another. Job changes may be welcomed by the head of the house, but how do you break it to kids they have to change schools, find new friends, give up sports they love, and abandon territory in which they move easily? Lifestyle changes may be a mutual decision by partners or it, too, can be not much fun, as each partner has to give up known comforts of home, familiar routes, even old friends falling by the wayside. The trick is not only to prioritize logistics, but to get on board mentally, remembering this move can be an opportunity to bring newness into the family – move closer to a city you like to visit, national parks on your bucket list, a lake or river with great fishing so you can teach your son how to fish, like your dad did. The main tactic is to keep a cool head and know everything will work out – not just fine, but better than anticipated. Bottom line? Remove as much stress from the situation as possible, and accept the inevitable positive outcome.
The first person you should contact.
Your realtor will sit down and carefully go over the entire process, selling to buying. Realtors have a plethora of resources – packing your stuff, selling your stuff, mover recommendations, cleaning up landscaping, even contractors for pre-listing fix-up and repair needs, just to name a few. If something needs to be taken care of when moving, your realtor is your go-to person who’s helped hundreds of families like yours go through the daunting process of selling and starting anew. Realtors love people. That may be hard to understand, but it’s true. How refreshing to have someone on your side who knows and understands the grind and impossible number of tasks when faced with a move. Your realtor is your trusted sidekick, who can explain all the legalese and myriad steps involved in the process. If you know a move is in your future, pick up the phone – and don’t let stress put you in a bind. H
ormone replacement has become a very complicated issue, but it’s governed by a few simple principles. By understanding and following these principles, you’ll be able to determine if hormone replacement is appropriate for you. If it seems a contradiction that the same hormones that help build strong bodies when you’re young and help you maintain your health during your middle years suddenly turn on you to promote cancer, heart attack, and stroke when you attempt to maintain their levels by supplementation in your later years, you’ll be able to appreciate these principles. • The first principle is simply that bio-identical hormones – the exact same molecules that your body has been making since before your birth, estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone – don’t cause the deadly side effects associated with hormone replacement. In fact, when bio-identical hormones are used, especially through the skin as a cream or gel, there is an actual reduction in the risks typically associated with hormone replacement. • The second principle is the human hormones used in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy can no longer be patented, and therefore offer little profit incentive to the pharmaceutical industry. As a result, the published studies that show some bad risks associated with hormone replacement therapy are done on synthetic non-human hormones that do offer a profit to the drug companies. • The third principle is that objective medical research has shown bioidentical hormones given to humans in human amounts to replace deficiencies, especially when administered through the skin, lead to either an improvement or cause no change in virtually every measurable parameter.
SAFE
Hormone replacement for women
The problem with modern hormone replacement, which is more accurately called hormone substitution, is that it utilizes molecules that have been altered quite dramatically. This can lead to very different and unintended actions on the body. For example, when altered by moving just two hydrogen atoms, the testosterone molecule becomes estradiol, a female hormone. Estrogen and testosterone have very different functions in the body. When the pharmaceutical industry makes major changes in hormones in order to secure patents, and then sells them as hormone “replacement,” nothing but trouble can result.
Good path, bad path.
Another factor to consider is that there are two different pathways in the liver where estrogen is broken down, to be eliminated by the body. Simply put, one pathway is good and one is bad. When produced in large amounts, the breakdown products produced in the bad pathway are strongly associated with an increased risk of estrogen-related breast, colon, and uterine cancers. High amounts of the breakdown products produced in the good pathway have actually been shown to result in a decreased risk of these cancers, when compared to women who aren’t taking hormone replacement. It’s vital in hormone replacement therapy that the hormones taken should be broken down in the good pathway, not the bad one. (There’s a lab test to determine the ratio of the breakdown products in the good pathway versus the bad.) Eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, or taking indole-3-carbinol (I3C), the critical molecule contained in them, increases the enzymes in the good pathway. If a woman takes hormones orally in pill form, she must be given ten times the amount needed, because ninety percent will be broken down in the liver before reaching the bloodstream. This overload strategy of the pharmaceutical industry might sell more pills, but it necessarily causes much more of these hormones to be pushed down the bad pathway. Hormone cream applied to the skin – or injectable pellets – is a far more intelligent and healthy method of hormone delivery.

The Art of Intention
by Christina Allen “What is my purpose,” we ask ourselves. “What am I supposed to be? What is God’s will for me?” We expect a set answer, written on a sacred scroll somewhere, wrapped in red velvet ribbon. If only I knew... If only I had a sign, I would dedicate my entire life to it. I would have direction...
My life would matter.
What’s interesting about this query is it suggests there exists a specific destiny out there that’s been hidden from us. Somewhere it’s been written, if only we could access that file. The quest to locate it can become all-consuming – we will not rest until the mystery is solved. Numerous workshops, self-help books, and a sea of spiritual empowerment podcasts later, we find ourselves speaking fluently in spiritual idioms, but still seeking our destiny. The truth must be out there somewhere, how do I find it? What if the truth is not outside us somewhere, but actually inside? What if we are all aspects of the Creative Force, and each of us is expressing Creation in all its possible ways? What if a seed of that Creative Force lives within each of us as a compass, or internal knowing, and it connects to our hearts, leading us along our path? All we really have to do is clear away all the cultural programming, ancestral patterning, and personal defenses that keep us from aligning with our true North. As we anchor into our truths, the question then become, What is it I want to create? What if God’s will is simply for each of us to express our soul’s calling? What if there is no written scroll, just an empty one waiting for you to fill it? At the heart of quantum physics we find that the world is not predetermined, but in fact, probabilistic. This means there are many possible outcomes, and we participate in creating any given one by the choices we make. Similarly, at the heart of the Andean teachings there is the basic premise that whatever intentions we have, the energy of Creation will follow them. As the energy follows, doors open, obstacles move, opportunities unfold.
This is really powerful medicine, but it is deceptively simple.
If we are still wandering through the halls of unconscious programming, we may have tamped down that inner voice in exchange for those that bring us safety or approval. The art of intention starts with acts of self-awareness. If you do not know how you feel about something, stop and ask yourself. We must be crystal clear about what our intentions are, and the fears they evoke within us. If we have the intention of being safe, but need to take a risk to step into what calls us, we find ourselves in conflict, and the universal energies do not know which intentions to follow. Our first step is to sit with ourselves and truly experience the discomfort of our reactions, rather than trying to sedate ourselves or manufacture a more pleasant experience. We must then do the deep work of facing what holds us back. Do you believe you are unworthy, don’t deserve it, that it is selfish to want something? This isn’t about how you can be special to compensate for your shortcomings, it is about listening to the song in your heart and overcoming the obstacles in expressing it. The art of intention starts with an inclination, but the work is in looking at what holds us back, and addressing what anchors in those fears. When we’re finally clear, our intentions can then be projected out into the Universe unencumbered, and our lives have purpose. The lesson then, is learning how to surf those waves as they come rolling in. Cowabunga! WEIGHT LOSS AND HEALTH Which comes first?
It’s a cliché to say almost everyone is overwhelmed by the demands of a modern lifestyle, but… Almost everyone is overwhelmed by the demands of a modern lifestyle. Between crazy schedules, infuriating traffic, and electronic devices making you constantly available by phone or tablet, you don’t have much downtime. One of the first things to suffer is your health, and not just from the obvious reason – stress. When life starts asking for more time than you have, it’s hard to stick to healthy habits like exercise and rest, and one of the first things to go is usually healthy eating habits.
Grabbing something while you’re on the go?
Healthy fast food is usually just slightly healthier fast food – a salad drenched in food-service dressing with fourteen lines of ingredients isn’t healthy. Grabbing a container of yogurt instead? Check out the sugar content. Even if you’re a dedicated label reader, sneaky additives and the poor nutritional quality of a good deal of mainstream store-bought food (including a lot of non-organic fresh produce) make supplementation almost a must. All this, and more, has contributed to a wave of obesity heading for tsunami levels, along with the attendant heath problems – and an industry based on solving the problem.
Magic bullets?
That would be nice, huh? Down one pill, and keep right on scarfing down cheeseburgers and diet sodas. Unfortunately, a lot of magic bullet supplements for weight may not be magic, but they are caffeinated bullets, and a bullet isn’t exactly the best choice for health. Boosting your metabolism to burn calories, give you more energy, and lose weight sounds good, but anything that burns creates by-products. Metabolism is a complicated process including, among other things, the health of internal organs that convert calories into energy and handle those byproducts. Blood sugar levels, healthy cholesterol, and healthy liver function have to be taken into account when you make supplementation a tool for weight loss It can be a valuable one, but correct supplementation combined with better food choices and a viable plan, maybe with the support of a professional, is your best bet. Lose weight to get healthy, or get healthy to lose weight – or both? Some information provided by EQ 365, offering plant-based supplementation and incentive programs with the potential to help lose weight and support a healthy metabolic system. FOR HERE, OR TO GO? Designing a wellness retreat Want some days off, on private acreage outside town? Town goes further than it used to, but there are day spas and relatively secluded B&B’s an hour or so from downtown. Want someplace closer, maybe a massage, energy healing session, homeopathic remedies for stress, private yoga sessions? Want to order from an a la carte menu of therapeutic sessions – or meals? Get ready to be on the phone or multiple websites half the day, maybe drive all over the place – pretty much the opposite of relaxation and stress relief.
Want them all the same day?
There again, you’ll spend some time working out multiple schedules, largely based on driving time in Austin traffic. There are luxury resorts in and around Austin, wellness centers, and multiple independent practitioners scattered here, there, and everywhere. If you want them all in one place at one time, though, you’ll need a different business model, one with options for being pampered, attended to by a variety of holistic practitioners, or just left alone to read, write, snooze, or whatever else floats your boat – gourmet wellness with concierge services, instead of fast food wellness. Surprisingly, there aren’t as many options available in and around Austin as you might imagine. It’s difficult for property owners to resist the urge to offer anything other than festivalgoer party rentals, or a place for visiting UT professors to stay. On the other end of the spectrum, find a place where offices are sub-sub contracted out to multiple practitioners, where you can get a massage on one end of the hall and an acupuncture treatment on the other – and you may still drive an hour each way just to get to them.
The entrepreneurial spirit.
In an age of digital gadgetry and marketing, demand tends to follow supply – you don’t really need that new phone, but you’re led to believe you can’t live without it, no matter the cost. When supply follows demand, as it should, what you need – rest, relaxation, and wellness – will be easily supplied by folks with the ability to do so. Then you can just relax and enjoy the ride. Onyx Wellness Center is an exclusive luxury retreat near Round Rock, offering guests easy online scheduling of private appointments with some of Austin’s top holistic practitioners. by Justin Bustamante Congratulations! You’ve done it. You made a choice to change for the better, and you’re sticking to it. Week 1, your motivation is high, so you plow through it. Week 2, you changed it up at the end so you wouldn’t get comfy – good for you. Week 3, you get results! Stick with it and things can only go up.
If that’s how it went for you, fantastic.

Were things a little different? Did you feel on some level, something just didn’t fit? When I set out to make more than I was making, I felt like I’d have to become a sleazy salesman, or the type that only comes out on top because he gives the other guy the short end of the stick – beliefs fueled by past experiences with supposedly successful people. Neither of these fit with my core self – the part of me that feels we can reach a middle ground, play a little give-and-take so everyone wins. Because of this, I cut myself short in a lot of ways, mostly mental. Because of that belief system, my goal didn’t fit or sit right with me, creating a self-sabotage pattern to set myself back. The worst part? I didn’t even know it. These patterns run on automatic. Beliefs help make up identity on a deep, subconscious level – and when identity feels threatened, the subconscious resorts to default programming to protect you. All the old thought loops sneak back around, making sure your extra-comfy behaviors come back and you stick to what you’re already good at.
This makes it a dirty goal.

To clean it up, you have to make deep-seated belief changes. I read a few books (no YouTube videos), went beyond my current understanding, and started closing more deals and attracting more clients. I’m not in that line of work anymore, and moved on to other more fulfilling projects – but only because of a belief system change that helped clean up dirty goals. This is how rapid change happens, at the level where you store beliefs about identity. Change your beliefs about one thing, and everything else begins to change as a natural side effect. Where the mind goes, the body follows. Justin Bustamante is a Neurolinguist and Certified Wellness Hypnotist. Free consultation. Virtual sessions available. SPEAKING FOR MONARCHS Austin All Natural has never published a letter from a reader. Here’s the first.
Thank you
for focusing on monarch butterflies last month. I appreciate and understand pointing to Monsanto as the seriously bad guy in the decline of the species. They need to be called to account for what they’ve done to decimate the population. From where I sit, others are equally responsible. If they’d change their habits, maybe it could make a difference. Thirty-five years ago, my husband and I built a porch. There’s a house attached to it, where we eat and sleep. The porch is where we live. From it we’d watch, every spring and fall, the monarch migration – hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of them! We were in awe. They were, literally, everywhere.
This last spring we saw three.
Three freaking monarchs. The population declined eighty-nine percent, and we’ve watched it happen from our porch, helpless to stop it. Thirty or so years ago, a ranch outside Johnson City cut down all juniper trees (aka cedar), claiming their springs came back. Water returned to the land! Unfortunately, people decided cutting down everything but live oak trees was the way to go. What a bandwagon - everyone joined in. (The ranch next to us bought a bulldozer and proceeded to tear down anything not a live oak. Redbuds, mountain laurels, madrones, agarita, yaupon – all gone. If it wasn’t a live oak, it was toast.)
Fast forward.
Fewer and fewer monarchs. And bees. And hummingbirds. Fast forward again, the ranches sold, turning into subdivisions. Fast forward yet again. As my husband’s fond of saying, we move closer to the city of Austin every day. Our new neighbors bring their city selves out here, along with it the idea you mow. Lawns rule! Every day, lawn crews are mowing and blowing chem-lawn land. What’s left of wildflowers (milkweed as a low-growing plant is particularly susceptible to mowing) isn’t allowed to flourish and sustain the monarchs, bees, and other pollinators. Because people don’t bother to learn about where they are, they just bring their past with them, destroying what they don’t even know they have. I’d like to say, Father forgive them for they know not what they do – but what I really want is for them to wake up and see the harm they’re doing. And maybe next year I’ll have four. Vaya con Perros,
Melodie Greider
Milkweeds attract monarchs and bees.

Dear Ashtara:
Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, It was a pleasure meeting you in our town of West. You are a beautiful person. I have a question about our business that has struggled for several years – will it ever turn around again? My husband’s health has suffered because of it. Will we be able to retire someday and live comfortably? Have a blessed day. Cindy, 61, West, TX Dear Cindy, Thank you for becoming an Excalibur with each person you meet. Fortune is on your side because your husband, plus several others, will rebuild another business connected with his present business. You will see. As for you, success is also on your side. No giving up – nothing is worth staying sick. Gabriel is your angel, Lord Maitreya is your high teacher. Dear Ashtara, During a job interview last month, I met a man. His energy has been very strong around me ever since and the connection was very strong in person as well. Is he a soul mate? And, will he be contacting me? I didn’t get the job, but the door is open. Ariana, 45, Leander, TX Dear Ariana, The new man happens to be a Twin Soul. However, just because he is connected that way, there isn’t enough of him in your new life. I doubt if he will be there for your next phase. Come November 2019, your new life will have taken such a spin that you will not even remember him. Hold on, don’t give up. The writing is on the wall for you to connect with the perfect job at the perfect time with everyone happy and contented. Your angel Gabriel is always with you. Sandalfon is your highest teacher for now. Good luck, angel. Dear Ashtara, What is my future? I have been trying to get a welding job and two have

passed me by. Do you see a loving partner for me in my life? I know I have some artistic and design qualities. Do you think I will ever be able to use those gifts? Jade, 43, Grand Prairie, TX Dear Jade, Thank you for your willingness to become an author, which could make you famous. For when you were born, Gabriel said, “My son, you will write and teach spiritual doctrine in your life.” Welding is a passing, small profession that will get you on your feet again. So, thank God for it. Misfortune is behind you because of your eloquent and sincere authoritative endeavors, because you have become, already, what we call The New Human, entitled to recreate with the immediate hierarchy on planet Earth. Thus, striking into a New Civilization that will enhance children, parents, adults, spiritual teachers, and others that will bring forth a New World. Thank you for your patience, endurance, and Excalibur existence. You are the light. Your loving partner is in Texas. She is someone you have met and idolize. The artistic gifts you have had in every lifetime are being amped up via the light system called The Galactic Federation via Lord Maitreya, who is your highest teacher from the other side. Archangel Gabriel is your angel. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone). Questions answered and more. The Bible, referring to creation, says, first came the Word – sound vibration – and from the Word all things were created – sound manifesting into physical matter. According to these early writings, all things were created in this manner. Not just some, all – and they still are.
The extreme power of sound.
In healing, balancing, and manifesting, the most powerful means for creating sound is vocally – toning, chanting, singing. Sound created in this manner is a living energy instrument, which greatly enhances and empowers its vibration. Until recently, sound was only experienced in a linear fashion, due to an inability to hold the higher vibration necessary to utilize its holographic or multi-dimensional nature. In 1999, this began to change – and although sound’s not traditionally used in its multi-dimensional, empowered form, you can still see the intense impact it has. Sound plays a significant role in your life, and can easily change your emotional state. Ever listened to a song which led you to feel sadness or longing, took you back in time to a specific memory, lifted you up in an instant, stimulated you to feel happy, alive, energized, excited? When directed to do so, sound, in its multi-dimensional or holographic form, can clear, balance, heal, and create with a power and degree not experienced on this planet for several thousand years. Imagine sound being a hundred times more powerful. This is its potential, and more, when used holographically. Humanity is once again able to hold this higher vibration. Using spiritually inspired techniques, the immensity of holographic sound can be consciously activated, amplified, and directed – with the highest intent.
