Galloway: Our toughest hurdle is people not having uninsured motorist (UM) coverage on their auto insurance. In those cases, it can be legally impossible for us to recover enough money to make the client whole again. Purchase UM! 337: What is your biggest accomplishment?

Jefcoat: Many people are surprised that we personally handle so many of our own cases. We’re not just faces on TV. We work hard to run a growing business while giving individual attention to our clients and staff. We are very proud of the balance we have built.

Every day at 5 a.m. François Poupart leaves his residence and goes to work. It’s a short commute down one flight of stairs to arrive at his place of business...the bakery which he resides above.

Regardless of the distance though it’s a trip he continues to make every day for over 45 years, since Poupart Bakery was established at its current location in 1970. At 80 years old Poupart continues to follow his passion.

The scents in the air and smiles on the customer’s faces awaken his spirit and provide constant incentive to never give up.

Poupart began baking at 13 years old. Growing up across from a bakery, he would watch out the window every day in fascination.

Poupart and his wife immigrated to Louisiana in the 1960s and decided to settle and raise a family. The bakery was first opened in 1967.

Sharing a love for baking Poupart’s son, Patrick, has worked with his father since the age of four. He even attended pastry school in France at 17.

Poupart’s products are an authentic representation of his French heritage and training.

His skills as a master baker and member of the prestigious Compagnons du Tour de France are showcased daily.

The selection of quality French pastries, cakes, breads and lunch items set Poupart apart from the competitors - who have entered the market but seem to lack a certain je ne sais quoi that Poupart Bakery possesses.

As a child Keno Hebert visited the local grocery store regularly. He lived nearby the store, and the owners were his friends and neighbors.

Keno already had an accomplished career including being the founding member of the band River Road, which was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. However, he still wished to one day own the store he had essentially grown up in.

In 2010 the opportunity for Keno to purchase the store finally came and with

In a short amount of time this local entrepreneur has completely rewritten the entire business model for Great American Cookies.

Tye currently owns five locations spanning the United States from Louisiana to Maryland and now travels to mentor and present to new franchise owners. Within the next year he is set open four more locations.

Linda Hebert

Linda Gilbert Hebert comes from a family of eight. Being one of the older children in her family, she helped to raise her younger siblings while both of her parents worked.

Growing up in a large family inspired Linda to dream of one day having a happy, successful family of her own. Linda met Keno, married and was blessed to have two boys, Tye and Trey, which fulfilled her dream.

For over 30 years Linda has stood by Keno’s side through challenges and successes. From behind the scenes she has guided, supported and managed every business venture that Keno, Tye and Trey have been a part of.

Linda is the common denominator in every one of their success stories. She is happy to take the back seat to manage her own dream business: The Hebert family.

Still, Keno, Tye and Trey would like to take this opportunity to thank their silent partner, wife and mother. At 16 years old Trey Hebert began working a job that would ultimately become his career. Driving around with his dad as a teen, he helped with the family lawn care business to earn extra income.

Trey enjoyed the work but really had his heart set on becoming an electrician. After graduating high school, he pursued his dream and began working. However, he quickly discovered the job lacked a certain spark.

Trey’s dad, Keno, was also looking for something different. While Keno enjoyed lawn care, it was not his true passion. That’s when everything fell into place.

Keno found a new business to invest in, and Trey became owner of Lawnmasters of Acadiana. He was a natural fit. Trey was already familiar with the route and knew the customer’s preferences for how they wanted their yards cut.

Through the years Trey has serviced residential and commercial properties. In addition to traditional lawn care and maintenance he offers dirt work, bush hogging, site cleanup and landscaping.

For Trey the biggest accomplishment is that he is a self-made success story. He is proud

to own his business and the home he shares with his wife, Morgan, and their dogs.

Owning a lawn and landscaping company does have its challenges; for Trey, the toughest part is seasonal preparation. “It’s important to plan for the winter months because things will slow down, and you have to be strategic to make it through,” he said.

Still Trey loves his job. He is happy to be able to spend his days outside working hard. From general maintenance to custom landscaping, there’s no job Trey and the staff at Lawnmasters of Acadiana can’t handle.

From the outside Bayou State Pawn and Jewelry appears to be a traditional pawn shop.

However, one step inside and you will find that it’s a multi-faceted business conceptualized to offer specialty retail and jewelry.

Aside from the standard products and services offered by most pawn shops, Bayou State Pawn & Jewelry has the ability to order new merchandise as well. The shop also has a self-sufficient fine jewelry store within that offers services that range from custom design to repair.

Through the years many items have been brought into the shop, but the most interesting ever received was a pair of ivory elephant tusks (before they were illegal). This is just one of many interesting stories being told as people visit while browsing.

The pawn business can be a tough start up, and when the shop first opened the challenge was having more money going out than coming in. Since then, Bayou State Pawn & Jewelry, founded in 1986, has grown to include three locations.

All of the shops are owned and operated by brothers Jeff, Steve and Chris Raggio. Of the three locations, two are located in Lafayette (Moss Street and Johnston Street) and one in New Iberia.

From the beginning the Raggio brothers have built their business on two basic principles: honesty and excellent customer service. Their policy is to not loan on anything they wouldn’t own in their own homes.

As a result, they’ve been able to establish a dedicated customer and employee base that they credit with being the key to their success.

It’s obvious that the Raggios love what they do. When asked what is their favorite part of the job, the response was unanimous: all of the interesting people that they meet day in and day out.

A customer once boldly proclaimed to owner, Joey Beyt of Joey’s, “You’re more important to me than my doctor ...You feed me.” At Joey’s they go above and beyond feeding you.

Like a doctor they take care of you, and the staff prides itself on wanting the customer to tell them if something’s wrong.

It’s that standard of personal expectations that has created an excellence in service and quality at Joey’s for 34 years.

The idea of Joey’s originated when a distant relative visited and believed Lafayette could support a meat shop. At the time Beyt was looking for an alternative to college and got on board with the concept.

He enrolled in meat cutting school and after graduating was ready to move forward with the business. Beyt was 22 years old when Joey’s - An Old Fashioned Meat Market - first opened.

Within three years the business grew from exclusively offering meat and seafood to adding liquor and a lunch service (to go only).

After 14 years, in 1995, Joey’s relocated to better accommodate the wide variety of products and services offered. Joey’s expanded to a 10,000 square foot facility which houses a meat and grocery market, liquor store, deli, bakery, catering company and event venue.

The versatility in the business means that virtually everyone is competition, including restaurant chains because if you’re picking up food anywhere you’re not cooking supper. While this is a specialty store the prices are competitive and the chef prepared comfort foods are an affordable alternative to cooking.

Comprehensive and collision coverage should also be used until you have the means to self-insure. Don’t forget the uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage either!

If you own a home with a mortgage, your lender will require insurance to protect their exposure. Even if your home is owned free and clear, few people can afford to rebuild their home if it were to be totally damaged/destroyed. Be sure to review your policies annually for cost-saving opportunities and to ensure you continue to carry the proper coverage amounts (or risk facing co-insurance penalties).

Like so many other financial products today, insurance has morphed, name-changed and been bundled with many different options. It is hard to know which are right for you. Here is a list of the types of insurance almost everyone needs and, more importantly, why you need it.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Besides for the government now requiring you to have it or face steep penalties on your tax return, a Harvard University study claims that 62 percent of all personal bankruptcies are caused by medical expenses. Few, if any, can afford to pay for all our medical expenses out of pocket. If you are not currently covered, get with your HR department at work or search the individual state/federal exchanges for the proper coverage immediately.

AUTO/HOME INSURANCE

In Louisiana, the minimum required auto coverage is $15,000 in bodily injury to one person, $30,000 for more than one person and $25,000

TERM LIFE INSURANCE

It may not be what your insurance agent wants to sell you (because they make larger commissions on permanent/whole life policies), but for almost everyone, term life insurance is all you need. I recommend a level 20 term policy with a death benefit of around 10 times your annual income as a good starting point. This will cost you about 10 percent of the price of a whole life policy with comparable death benefit. Insurance is risk management, not an investment.

PERSONAL LIABILITY UMBRELLA POLICY (P.L.U.P.)

As you begin to amass a respectable net worth, it becomes more important to add an extra layer of personal liability protection to protect your hardearned assets. It is one of the best buys in the insurance world, costing around a few hundred dollars annually for 1 million dollars in coverage.

This umbrella policy covers all underlying policies you own (auto, home, boat, etc.) and will kick in after those liability coverages are exhausted.

CHICKENS Your own farm fresh eggs

By Justin Price, www.EcoScapesLafayette.com Have you ever tried a local farm-fresh egg? They taste incredible, and they’re packed with health benefits like high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins.

If you can’t always get to the farmers’ market on Saturday but want to enjoy the amazing qualities of farm-fresh eggs, consider having your own backyard chickens. Yes, it’s legal within most cities, but make sure to check your local ordinances. And it can be great entertainment for the kids.

COOPED UP There is a myriad of designs for a chicken coop. If you have a big yard, consider a moveable coop so the chickens can feed on grass and insects (improves egg quality).

If the coop is going to stay in one place, look up something called the deep litter method. It eliminates bad smells, only needs cleaning out a couple of times a year, and produces great compost for the garden HAPPY HENS Five hens will give you three to four eggs per day, except during winter when egg laying drops off considerably. Happy hens make great eggs, so keep them well-fed, well-watered, shaded during the summer and warm during the winter.

RULES OF THE ROOST If you live in Lafayette, there are a few rules to follow. According to the Code of Ordinances, Section 10-191 “Fowl and Rabbits,” chickens are not allowed “to run at large or be at large.”

In other words, they must be kept in a pen, coop or enclosure, which will also protect them from predators when constructed properly.

The structure “shall be at a distance of at least 25 feet from any and every building or structure used for sleeping, dining, living or working, shall be kept in a sanitary condition at all times, and shall be kept in such a manner as will be reasonably calculated not to become offensive to adjacent neighbors or to the public.”

FISH PONDS The Pisces in me rejoices at the trending abundant use of water in residential landscaping. Ranging from a simple and sophisticated bubbling vase to a trickling stream falling over rocks into a fish pond, these aquatic elements make a beautiful addition to any home for the eyes and ears.

Two of Lafayette’s most talented water garden experts, Bobby Bergeron and Eric Trahan, shared their experience and advice.

FIRST THINGS FIRST “Fish don’t like a whole lot of movement in the water and require more filtration,” said Eric Trahan, water garden expert at The Rock &Grass Shoppe.

“Do you simply like the sound and looks of a water garden or are you set on having fish? More customers are forgoing fish all together for a simple water fountain that can be cleaned with chemicals and algaecide.”

Also to consider: fish ponds take up more room, whereas to have the calming sound of a fountain can easily fit in on a balcony.

AU NATURALE Bobby Bergeron, owner of An Artisan’s Touch, has designed and installed dozens of water features for Lafayette’s residents, from low maintenance starter fishponds to an elaborate canal watercourse for Koi fish to understated fountains.

He says trending in 2016 are natural ponds with a modern twist. “Ponds using refurbished statuaries surrounded by native grasses and plants contrast well with modern lighting and spray nozzles.”

DOUBLE DUTY “Beyond the typical water lily, irises, calla lilies, hyacinths, horsewhip and umbrella plants will all work well in and around a water garden,” said Bergeron.

His favorite? “Get plants that will oxygenate the water for the fish and provide shade during the hot summer months.”

He estimates within six months to a year the pond should be established where there is little maintenance involved.

Floating plants such as Ranunculus or water buttercups work well at creating oxygen in the water and working as fish hatchery environments.

Calvin Klein’s new unisex fragrance CK2 campaign just launched with a familiar face at the center of the campaign.

Born and raised in Rayne, LA, Aaron Broussard never dreamed of modeling. Yet in a very brief time he has managed to land an ad campaign with a top designer brand.

The entire experience has been a whirlwind for Broussard who only began his modeling career this past November. After signing with local agency Images, agent Simone Foreman began submitting

The first to respond was an agency by the name of Click Model Management in New York City. Within a month Broussard had signed on, attended a casting call and was booked for the Calvin Klein campaign.

The edgy campaign features a female and a male (Broussard) applying the CK2 fragrance. Once the fragrance is applied the gender roles become reversed bringing out a more feminine side in Broussard.

Broussard considers himself fortunate to have been discovered and to have found this amount of success so early in his career. Calvin Klein was his first booking!

The best part of the experience he says was having the opportunity to work with professional directors, photographers and models who Broussard says treated him well and were extremely down to earth and friendly.

As for the future Broussard hopes his success in modeling will evolve into an acting career. He would ultimately love to relocate to the West Coast to fulfill his dreams.

Chicken Butter Masala ½ tablespoon garam masala 3-4 tablespoons lemon juice 1 pound boneless chicken 2 tablespoons oil ½ cup butter 2 (10.75 ounce) cans Hunt’s Tomato Puree Ginger, julienned, approx., 1 teaspoon ½ cup milk ½ cup fresh cream (or half-and-half)

Garam Masala Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground cloves Pinch ground nutmeg Pinch ground black peppercorns Pinch ground mace Pinch ground turmeric Pinch ground cumin Pinch ground coriander

Mix the garam masala and the lemon juice together. Apply to the chicken.

Marinate for 30 minutes.

In a pan, heat oil and 1 tablespoon of butter. Add tomato puree and cook for about 20 minutes. If it has a sour taste you can add a bit of sugar.

Add marinated chicken and ginger. Mix well and cook for another 10-15 minutes.

Add garam masala, milk and cream. Mix well. Add salt to taste. Serve and enjoy!

The Rayne native just finished filming Top Chef and has been showing the world that there is a high level of sophistication to back up all of that rustic flavor.

Don’s Specialty Meats is so good it will have any traveler off I-10 local or not saying “C’est Bon!” Beginning in Carencro in 1993, Don’s Specialty Meats started as a partnership. After a couple of years, the partnership dissolved and owner Mark Aubrey Cole continued to operate the authentic Cajun store.

At 19 years old, Brian Blanchard began working as a dishwasher at the Lafayette restaurant, iMonelli, to help support himself through college. Hard working and hard-driven, he quickly advanced to waiter and then to maître d’.

However, he had his heart set on becoming a chef. On his days off, he threw himself into an apprenticeship, learning how to prepare authentic Italian cuisine.

It was instantly apparent that he had a natural, remarkable talent.

Soon after, iMonelli’s chef departed, leading to Blanchard’s promotion to the position. Shortly thereafter, another big change. The owners wished to sell the restaurant and approached their young chef, who seemed the natural choice.

Blanchard had never imagined such an opportunity but lept at the offer. All he had to do was get a loan to buy the restaurant. Easy, right?

Off he went to the bank. Having no collateral or debt, the bank said no. Blanchard turned to his father, who also said, most definitely, no. Finally, the young graduate went to his Italian grandfather, Joseph (“Jo”) Cefalu: BB: Grandpa, I want to buy iMonelli.

JC: Can you do this?

BB: Absolutely.

JC: OK, you’ll pay me back...

but I had a great accountant who taught me the business and customers dedicated to my success. They could go anywhere. Why did they come here? To make sure I survived.

“During the toughest times, they kept our doors open.

Everyone else in town said, ‘This kid will never survive.’ I never thought of shutting down. Failure was not an option… even at its toughest, when the economy was down. My staff went above and beyond, and we were together in the trenches.”

Looking back, Blanchard regards his first six years in business as his most challenging. That’s when he worked round the clock, every day, without days off except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Mother’s Day. For Blanchard, you spend Mother’s Day with your mother.

The day that making money means more to him than spending time with his mother means “something has gone very wrong.”

He credits his father with instilling in him three great gifts: a deep faith, the belief that family comes first and an unrelenting will to succeed. He also gives opportunities to young people with those qualities.

Chivalry, humility, hard work, gratitude, respect and good manners…Blanchard credits his long-lived success to the core traditional values instilled in him by his parents. Today, Blanchard has a staff of 100, and restaurants and catering businesses in five locations in Lafayette and Morgan City: iMonelli, Café Jo Jo’s, River Oaks Catering and Events Center, NicoBella Event Center and Bay City Bistro.

World famous pizza burger

Deano’s Pizza is a hometown staple. However, if not for an Idaho native wanting to escape the cold, we may never have experienced the greatness that can only be described as the Crawfish a la Dean-o’s.

Originating in Santa Barbara, California Dean Metcalf opened the self-service style restaurant with just five pizzas, beer and soft drinks on the menu. The name Deano’s was the winning entry of a citywide contest.

Business was doing well, but Metcalf did not feel as if California was the place he wanted to raise a family. At that time Lafayette, LA was listed by the Chamber of Commerce as the best place to relocate to.

When Metcalf and his family moved to Lafayette In the early 1970s, the original Bertrand location (which is still in operation) was chosen because of its proximity to the university. The move brought more opportunities to expand the menu and to add a wait staff to the restaurant.

Metcalf admits that the oil crisis of the 1980s was a trying time but Deano’s flourished. He credits his sustainability to expanding his restaurant only as the business expanded, and for that reason Deano’s has always been able to operate virtually debt free.

Deano’s is a family business, and Metcalf is most proud of his family which has now grown to include present and former employees for over four generations.

Since the 1970s Deano’s has proudly served Louisiana Italian.

Visit the original Bertrand location on any given day and you will find Dean Metcalf who after all these years still enjoys the everyday meetings and challenges and says that’s what keeps him young!

David Buck and Johnny Raymond opened Buck & Johnny’s Eclectic Italian with a Cajun flair in Breaux Bridge, LA in May 2010. The location for the restaurant was the former Domingue Motors car dealership which had been abandoned since 1985. Buck had a vision though, and when completed it added an extra “pop” to downtown.

The restaurant faced many struggles when it opened including feeling the effects of the BP oil spill. In 2011, Raymond became ill and by February 2012 was no longer able to operate as a managing partner.

At that time his wife, Coatney Raymond, who possessed an extensive background in management, decided to step in. Having just finished helping to build the new Lourdes Hospital, she was ready and able to tackle another project.

The restaurant business was challenging for Coatney who had no previous experience. With expenses outshining the revenue, she knew she had to do something fast.

After hiring consultant Jude Tauzin things began to look up, and then Chef Tony Savoy came on board.

Coatney beams with pride when discussing the quality of staff employed. Manager Tina Guidry and Chef Savoy lead the team who Coatney says motivate her every day.

Running a bar is in Jared Doise’s blood. His grandfather was a bar owner, and his father delivered beer while a college student.

After Doise graduated from college, opening his own place was the natural next step.

In 2003, Doise founded Legends Bar & Grille, destined to become one of Lafayette’s premiere hotspots. “My wife and I took all our savings, put them in a pot, and opened our first place,” Doise recalled. “It was a huge gamble, but it’s paid off really well.”

Started in 1981, Marcello’s was first located on Johnston Street

by Guidry Road in Lafayette.

Three years later the restaurant relocated to Time Plaza until the decision to close was made due to a collapse in the local economy.

Marcello’s Wine Market Café made its triumphant return to Lafayette on Kaliste Saloom Road in 2007. In the nine years since, it has been successfully operating in its current location. Much of that success can be attributed to Todaro’s “no quit” mentality.

He emphasizes the importance of navigating whatever rules and regulations he has to when opening a new business because if you give up then you’ll never open.

He is the type of guy who has a passion for staying busy and having more than one business certainly keeps him that way.

Liking the challenge of success and having no fear when it comes to failure has led to three restaurants, a catering business, and a liquor store between Lafayette and New Orleans.

Todaro considers himself very fortunate to have been able to expand and excel in the highly competitive New Orleans market and has received several accolades in the first year alone.

Wisdom, patience and a third grade education was all Pat Huval, founder of Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf, needed to build a Cajun empire fit for a king. The kingdom has grown to encompass five businesses including a restaurant, club, crawfish peeling plant, roux plant and hotel.

It’s a remarkable achievement for Huval and his family. After all, they started with a grocery store that sold crawfish sacks for just a penny per pound.

Beginning in 1952, Huval owned and operated a club selling burgers out the back. Eventually the business expanded to be Pat’s Waterfront Restaurant located along the bayou with the club being positioned on the opposite side.

With acts featured such acts as Otis Redding, Fats Domino and Wilson Cricket, the club was very popular.

Huval’s dedication to the business was tireless. He worked hard putting in seven days a week and working morning until night.

Huval gave himself no time off and did not take any vacations.

Even at 80 years old Huval continued to build his dream and was able to create the existing club.

It’s those memories of a dad who works hard, provides for his family and gives back to the community that inspire his children to carry on the living legacy he has created.

Keeping the business in the family his son Harvey Huval and daughter Cynthia Domingue run the Henderson restaurant with son Jude Huval as the chef. Daughterin-law Tracey Huval manages the hotel, and daughter Nancy and her husband, Ricky Perioux, run a location in Lake Charles.

The family continues to build upon the same dream started by one man over 65 years ago. Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf works every day to earn their reputation, and they do so by greeting every customer with generations worth of love.

The Barrel is a whiskey focused cocktail bar that serves premium brand whiskeys, wines and craft beers. Located on Albertson Parkway in Broussard, LA the bar, which is owned by Jon Bourque and Virgil Blanchard, is as much about the history as the product they serve.

Bourque was initially hesitant about opening a new bar during this challenging economic time.

However, he ultimately felt the bar would be a great place for people to go to relax and help ease their tensions.

The concept behind the bar is sure to do just that! The Barrel is a smoke-free, upscale bar that has the look and feel of a real whiskey distillery. Walking into the bar the rustic atmosphere instantly transports you to a different era.

With design details that include a brick wall, wood accents, Edison lightbulbs, exposed pipes and actual whiskey barrels, the environment manages to strike the perfect balance between elegant and casual.

It’s the look and feel of the bar that Bourque said is his biggest accomplishment yet. Standing in the bar, looking around, Bourque could not be more pleased with how everything turned out.

Manager Paul Landry offered even more insight into the distinguishing characteristics of The Barrel. The emphasis will be on whiskey, bourbon and scotch.

The Barrel offers 50 plus premium brand whiskeys at reasonable rates including great specials such as Whiskey Wednesday.

Landry is also excited to feature housemade simple syrups crafted himself. With plans that also include hosting event nights like blind whiskey tastings, it’s clear The Barrel is quickly on its way to becoming Broussard’s new go to relaxation destination.

Richard: I lost family members in a car accident when I was 13. It inspired me to want to help people.

337: What do you find most rewarding about your profession?

Richard: It’s rewarding being able to help people when they are in need. It is a good feeling to know that I am the best part of someone’s worse day.

337: What should people know about your profession?

Richard: EMTs aren’t ambulance drivers! We can do almost everything a paramedic can do minus starting IVs, distributing medications and intubating a patient. We support the paramedics and work as a team to provide the best care possible.

Quinn: Fishing, camping, duck hunting, shooting and riding my motorcycle.

Quinn: I was able to get my EMT basic training through the Health Academy at Lafayette High.

After graduation, I did an accelerated paramedic course and critical care paramedic course.

Quinn: I am social, a bit of a cut up usually. However, when a call comes in, I’ve been told I’m like a light switch. I go from playful to serious in an instant.

Quinn: I was a volunteer firefighter since I was 16. That got me interested in becoming an EMT. I applied for an AirMed spot, and here I am.

Cobb: Growing up, my family was impacted by many diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, depression, cancer and osteoporosis just to name a few. I had to watch helplessly as their vitality was taken from them. I was drawn to figuring out the causes of disease and how we can prevent and treat them. I witnessed how disease impacts a family and how important self-care education can be on outcomes.

Barczyk: Working out, playing guitar and family time. I am also the strength coach for my wife’s swim team, City of Lafayette Aquatics.

Barczyk: I am an extrovert by nature. I get in a little trouble for playing pranks on people from time to time.

Barczyk: I played football in high school, and my parents would take me to a chiropractor when I was banged up. I felt like I recovered better after treatment.

Barczyk: This year will make 21 years, all here in south Louisiana.

Iyegar Meet Gretchen Kaltenbach Like many, Gretchen Kaltenbach took good health for granted and was feeling the effects of decades of overwork, chronic stress and unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Today, the former co-owner of Genesis Behavioral Hospital and registered nurse has gone Yogi and enjoys radiant health and well-being.

“I still work in health care and nursing by helping people to discover their youth and vitality,” said Kaltenbach Kaltenbach credits yoga with her transformation, “Yoga taught me not only to live a healthy lifestyle, but I’ve become the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

Enter Jarrod Roy In August 2015, a former land man walked into The Yoga Garden and struck up a conversation with Kaltenbach. In 2010, while working in the oil and gas industry, Jarrod Roy enrolled in a yoga class to remedy chronic pain and stress.

However, modern styles have little in common with their ancient origin.

The invasion of selfies on social media, depicting perfect bodies twisted into advanced poses, further distorts yoga in the public mind. It makes yoga seem inaccessible and beyond the average person’s ability, even intimidating. Overcoming hype and misconceptions has proven challenging to Kaltenbach and Roy. BRAIN BULLIES

Why bully our brain when all it is trying to do is keep us in balance with the world around us? While multitasking to save time (checking email while listening to music and having a meaningful conversation) may seem like a helpful idea, the poor brain is struggling to decide what is and is not important at lightning speeds.

As efficient as the brain is, it is not perfect. Something is bound to get lost in the sensory tornado to which it is subjected.

SINGLE-TASKING IS KEY

By James Eckho, MS, NCC, LPC, LAC The brain does a wonderful job of choosing what sensory information is important. If we focused on every bit of sensory information that bombards on a daily basis, everyone would be in a constant state of confusion and sensory overload.

To repair the brain of this sensory sabotage, mindfulness skills related to improved awareness and appropriate attending are essential. We need to bring back the seemingly mythical skill of single-tasking.

Take, for example, the simple task of focusing on the breath.

Unless mindfulness practice is in our daily routines, we quickly realize how difficult it is to only focus on the breath and not think of anything else.

When driving, just drive. Texting, switching radio stations, putting on makeup and eating a cheeseburger are not driving.

When studying, resist stressing out your brain with television, conversation and social media. Just study. And, of course, when having a conversation with someone, for goodness sakes, attend to them and not your phone!

Thirteen turned out to be a lucky number for her, as she spotted a handsome, blue-eyed brunette in the crowd and called him over to find out if he was the Jason she knew of through a mutual friend.

Being the prankster that he is, he denied it and gave a fake name. Humoring him, Amanda chatted him up for a while until he finally confessed that he was that Jason. They talked throughout the event, never knowing that this chance meeting would turn out to lead to a lucky lasting commitment.

A PICNIC PROPOSAL The couple dated for two years before sealing their bond. On the morning of Aug. 29, 2015, Jason packed a picnic and brought Amanda to the farmers market at the Horse Farm.

The two told stories for a while and caught up on the past week’s events and then Amanda left for a few minutes. When she returned, Jason handed her a little black box, knelt on one knee, and asked Amanda to be his wife. With tears of joy dripping down her cheeks, she accepted.

TYING THE KNOT The couple tied the knot during a romantic and intimate ceremony at the Chapel at Acadian Village where Amanda had served as director for three years.

Afterward, the couple celebrated at the historical home, Espirit de Coeur.

Guests wore festive New Year’s Eve cocktail attire and danced the night away. At midnight, guests donned hats and tiaras and toasted with Champagne to a version of “Auld Lang Syne” recorded by the Avett Brothers.

Shortly thereafter, the couple left through a tunnel of glow sticks created by guests. This was certainly a night to remember.

The less assertive partner needs to become more assertive, and the more assertive partner needs to learn how to become less assertive.

PLAYING FAIR - We all know when we want our way without any consideration for the one we love. We also know when we’re playing fair or not. Make the choice to play fair at all times within your relationship.

LEARN TO SPEAK UP - In a healthy relationship, if something is annoying you, it’s much better to talk it out rather than holding it in. You deserve to be equally heard within your relationship.

COMPROMISE IS THE KEY - Disagreements are a natural part of healthy relationships, however, it’s vital that you discover a way to create compromise between you. With true compromise the other person will feel respected that you have considered their points of view and be more open to considering yours.

MUTUAL RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER - Even if you disagree with your partner over an issue, it’s important that you let them know that they are entitled to their point of view and that you will consider their ideas. She went with Images Modeling and Talent Agency which is under the direction of agent/owner Simone Foreman. At the Expo she won “Best Overall Singer” and “Best Overall Headshot” in her age category.

After her trip, Madeline made several contacts with music industry producers/agents. She was introduced to Wakeane Caffey with The Caffey Group, based out of Los Angeles, California. Caffey is a music executive who has previously worked with artists such as Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Rihanna, Mariah Carey and John Legend.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine 1 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon in a zip-close bag. Cut biscuits into quarters, add to zip-close bag and shake until coated. Place cinnamon and sugar coated biscuit quarters in a Bundt cake pan.

Melt butter, add remaining cinnamon and sugar, and bring to a boil. Pour over biscuits and bake until biscuits are puffed and liquid is caramelized, 35-40 minutes. (It puffs up huge in the oven, so I would recommend putting it on a tray in the oven incase the cinnamon and sugar boil over!)

Back in the 1990s and 2000s ferrets were a fad, but rabbits have jumped in household pet popularity by leaps and bounds (no pun intended)! They make excellent, loveable companions but require all the time and attention and the same medical care you’d expect to provide for a dog or a cat.

• Rabbits need social interaction, plenty of exercise and a lot of enrichment activities. Be sure to research housing options before adopting to ensure you have the right space in your home or yard.

• Rabbits will get into trouble if they’re bored.

They’ll make their own fun chewing your possessions if you don’t provide alternate forms of entertainment like toys, cardboard and papers.

They do very well in pairs but males should be neutered; mature males will often fight.

• Like most pets, keeping rabbits inside or under

shelter and out of the soil will help to keep parasites under control and provide more comfort. They also need regular deworming, preventatives and regular veterinary care.

• Rabbits live 10+ years. Adopting a rabbit is a long-term commitment. So adopting a bunny should be a family decision.

SOFTBALL SWEEP Cajuns’ softball head coach Michael Lotief has 28 players coming back, which include eight of nine in the starting lineup from the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Championship team.

The team lost senior ace pitchers Jordan Wallace and Christina Hamilton, but Kylee Jo Trahan, Alex Stewart and Victoria Brown all return with experience on the mound.

Lotief added seven freshmen to the roster in August, and associate head coach Chris Malveaux and assistant coach Lana Bowers rejoined the coaching staff over the summer.

NEW COACH BRINGS PROMISE TO LACROSSE PROGRAM

Track team gears up for stretch run of outdoor season After what UL Lafayette track coach Lon Badeaux called a disappointing indoor season, the squad has set its sights on a strong stretch run with four meets left leading into the conference meet.

“We’re excited about the outdoor season because we have a lot of talent,” Badeaux said.

Badeaux said there are a couple of standouts on the men and women’s teams that need to perform for the team to be successful for the rest of the season.

“We have Hanoj Carter, who may end up being the best sprinter in the school’s history,” Badeaux said. “Our whole sprint team is talented.”

Badeaux also mentioned sophomore Franz Beyer from Berlin, Germany, who competes in multiple events, including the high jump.

An offseason move for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette lacrosse team seems to have paid great dividends for the squad.

In January, Jefferson Nichol was promoted to head coach after being with the team since last fall as the defensive coach.

Nichol replaced Cliff White who finished his three seasons as coach with a 10-18 record and a playoff appearance.

“There was just a lack of discipline; I am kind of like Bill Belichick and the San Antonio Spurs when it comes to execution,” Nichols said with a laugh. “We put an emphasis on hustle and discipline.”

In his first year at the helm, that new approach helped lead the team to a 5-0 start to the season before running into a little bit of adversity and losing three of its next four games.

One of those losses came at the hands of Kennesaw State University, a team that was ranked No. 12 in the Division II Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association polls.

“The start was great because it helped put credence behind what we were trying to show the guys,” Nichol said. “The losses were encouraging because we saw that our mistakes were easily correctible.”

Nichol credited senior defender, Eric Giesemann, freshman midfielder Tanner Shaddox, senior attacker Nick Midboe and sophomore goalie Michael Olivio as the catalysts for the team’s success.

“Eric (Giesemann) controls the defense,” Nichol said. ‘He has great athleticism and speed. “Nick (Midboe) controls the offense and puts everyone in their spots. All those guys play a huge role in what we do.”

Nichol is looking to lead the Cajuns to the Lone Star Alliance playoffs and he urges those who haven’t watched lacrosse before to come out and support his team.

“There are some big hits in lacrosse,” he said. “It is a lot more exciting than people think.”

The Cajuns close out their regular season at home April 9 against Texas A&MGalveston.

Badeaux said seniors Kaitlyn Moreau and Jasmine Fusilier are expected to play huge roles for the team.

“If we’re going to have any type of success, they’ll have to be successful,” Badeaux admitted.

As the season draws to a close, Badeaux said there are a few things working in his team’s favor.

“We’re good,” he said. “We just have to come together as a team and stay healthy. The conference meet will be at home so it will give us time to rest and not worry about travel.”

The Cajuns will be in action April 8-9 at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Alabama.

The Baton Rouge Boys of Summer The March 7 Baseball America ranking showed the Fighting Tiger Baseball Team ranked nationally at No. 7.

With the season young, Tiger fans have good reason to be excited. Junior left-hander Jared Poche is currently sporting an outstanding 0.92 in 19.2 innings pitched. Cole Freeman and his smoking hot bat is currently posting a .667 (8-for-15) batting average and a .706 on base percentage.

Bryce Jordan, Jake Fraley, Beau Jordan, Antoine Duplantis, Caleb Gilbert and Conner Hale’s great play is also responsible for the Tiger’s season performance.

Tiger’s New Tennis Complex is Love—All A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the state-of-the-art LSU Tennis Complex.

LSU President Dr. F. King Alexander, Vice Chancellor and Athletics Director Joe Alleva, TAF President and CEO Rick Perry, men’s tennis coach Jeff Brown, men’s assistant coach Danny Bryan and women’s co-head coaches Julia Sell and Michael Sell took part.

Most notable about the facility is that no public funds were used. A combination of private donations and bonds issued by the Tiger Athletic Foundation funded the complex.

At more than 160,000 square feet the complex boasts championship level courses: 12 outdoor and six indoor.

Coach’s offices for both men’s and women’s teams as well as fitness facilities, locker rooms and player’s lounge are also part of the new facility.

Fourteen hundred seats were built into the facility with excellent view planes. The indoor courts having seating for three hundred above the playing surface.

Alleva was quoted as saying, “We now have a facility where we can compete with anyone in the country.

After a third consecutive season high score against Alabama, the team is ranked third according to Roadtonationals.com behind Oklahoma at No. 1, and Florida in second place.

The win in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center also marked the third straight season LSU goes undefeated at home.

Outstanding performances by Ashleigh Gnat, Myia Hambrick, Sydney Ewing, Sarah Finnegan, Erin Macadaeg and Randii Wyrick places the team nationally at No. 1 on the vault, No. 3 on the floor, No. 5 on the uneven bars, and No. 10 on the balance beam.

Senior All-American Zach Wright lead the campaign with a tournament career low 12 under par (201) to take the top spot on the leader board.

Brandon Pierce, Nathan Jeansonne, Eric Ricard and Sam Burns also contributed to Chuck Winstead’s Tigers impressive showing. This was the 24th team championship of the Winstead era, and it looks like there is plenty more where that came from.

To be a female boxer, you have to have the mindset of a boxer and fight like a man. If you’re pure of heart and push hard enough, everything will fall into place.

By Brandon Comeaux Ireland native Deirdre Gogarty, one of the greatest female fighters of all time, had a dream to one day become a world champion. But in her home country, female boxing was not easily accepted. Turns out, Lafayette would become her home as her quest for greatness would take her to amazing heights.

337: What do you love most about the Acadiana area?

Gogarty: The people. I have made fantastic, lifelong friendships over the last 23 years. At first, I dreamed of moving to a northern U.S. city with a high Irish population. But the people were so friendly and open-minded about female fighting, and as Beau and his family took me in, it became obvious where I would stay.

337: What has been the biggest struggle as a female in a maledominated sport?

Gogarty: Biggest struggle is overcoming stereotypes like women would flail away and not box with skill. A lot of people don’t like seeing women hit each other; it seems unnatural to them. My biggest objective was to fight with so much skill that it wouldn’t be seen as a hindrance.

337: How would you describe the overall state of boxing in Louisiana?

Gogarty: Its very strong here… always has been. There is a deep tradition in boxing. The amateur scene has shows going on all the time.

337: How about the state of boxing for women across the globe?

Gogarty: The amazing part is women are now boxing in the Olympics! It’s really come full circle. However, in the professional scene, women are not being featured as much as they should. The coverage in the professional leagues has regressed, but the talent hasn’t.

337: What is the proudest moment of your boxing career?

Gogarty: Winning the Sports Star of the Year in Ireland in 1997 [the same year Gogarty won the World Title over Bonnie Canino] along with being inducted into the Women’s International Boxing Hall of Fame in July 2015.

THE RULES OF RECRUITING LHSAA Handbook clears fog

By Jordan Arceneaux In January, at the LHSAA’s annual convention, 182 high school principals in Louisiana voted to split boys basketball, girls basketball baseball and softball into select/nonselect championships beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

Only 120 principals voted against the split proposal. This comes three years after principals approved separate football championships for its nonselect or traditional public schools and its select schools, which includes private, magnet, some charter and laboratory schools.

Some of the problems with the format before the split was that recruiting would become an issue when it came to select schools when they would matchup against public schools.

At the convention, principals rescinded a bylaw that gave schools the ability to draw from within an entire parish. The change puts schools back into traditional attendance zones. Since schools with magnet programs draw students from beyond a traditional attendance zone, they will be deemed select.

Here is some of the highlights of the recruiting rules, according to the LHSAA handbook.

Recruitment of students or attempted recruiting of students for athletic purposes, regardless of their residence, is a gross violation of the spirit and philosophy of these bylaws and is expressly prohibited.

“Athletic recruiting” is defined as the use of undue influence and/or special inducement by anyone connected directly or indirectly with an LHSAA school in an attempt to encourage, induce, pressure, urge or entice a prospective student of any age to transfer to or retain a student at a school for the purpose of participating in interscholastic athletics.

Recruiting for athletic purposes is not only a violation by the student who has been recruited, but is also a violation by the school and/or the school personnel who recruited the student. It is a violation to recruit for athletic purposes regardless of a student’s age or grade level.

If proof is established that a school has secured and athlete under any of the conditions set forth in this section, the principal shall be required to appear before the Executive Committee and the Executive Director to answer the allegations against his/her school and the student(s) is automatically ineligible to participate in athletics for at least It shall be a violation of this rule for a student-athlete to receive or be

offered remuneration or special inducement of any kind that is not made available to all applicants who apply to or enroll in the school.

A student transferring from a member school to another shall be ruled ineligible for one calendar year from the date of enrollment because of “undue influence” if: 1. It is determined that a coach, including non-faculty, of the receiving school coached an out-of-school team on which the athlete played; or it is determined the coach, including non-faculty, at the receiving school acted as a private athletic instructor for the transferring athlete, regardless of whether the coach was paid for his/her services and/or expertise; or 2. It is determined the transferring student played on an out-of-school team made up of a simple majority of students from the receiving school; or 3. A student transfers to a new school within one calendar year of the relocation of his/her coach, including non-faculty, to that school.

4. Rule 2.1.5 (1-3) shall be enforced even in the event the student made a bona fide move into the receiving school’s attendance zone.

The penalties for a school in violation of illegal recruiting of students: • The school may be placed on restrictive probation and ruled ineligible for championship honors in the sport(s) in which the violation occurred.

• The school may be fined not to exceed $2,500 and billed for the cost of any investigation related to the violation.

• The school shall be required to forfeit any contest(s) in which the student participated after the violation.

• A student found to be recruited in violation of this rule shall be ineligible to participate in athletics for at least one calendar year and may be ruled ineligible in the sport(s) not to exceed four calendar AP R I L / M AY 20 16 3 3 7years.

• If the student is ruled ineligible and subsequently transfers to a school located in his/her home attendance zone in which he/she would have normally been immediately eligible under the residence and school transfers rule, he/she may be ruled immediately eligible at the school once the Executive Director has investigated his/her case.

• If the coach is involved, school may be prohibited from playing in a contest(s) with the coach serving as coach in that contest(s).

• Other penalties may be imposed on the school and/or individuals to a degree in keeping with the severity of the violation.

BON VOYAGE Stress free packing tips for your next vacation

Soon it will one of our favorite times of the year: vacation time!

Along with that wonderful high, comes the low of the stress of what and how to pack.

For me, packing for trips has been a challenge at times. How do you look and feel great while still packing minimally? So with that, I give you a few hints on how to pack for a 10-day trip.

COLOR SCHEME SMARTS

Start a few days before you leave begin laying out clothes appropriate for the weather and type of trip you will take. Keep a similar color scheme, such as black, white and tan, or orange, yellow, turquoise. This will minimalize color choices of shoes and accessories.

In staying with your color theme, pack half as many pants or skirts for the number of days that you will be gone. Mix and match shirts and tops, plus a few extra, for the total time.

MINIMAL FOOTWEAR

I suggest packing only two pair of shoes, and of course, the third comfortable pair you will wear on the plane and through airports. Don’t’ forget that you have to take off those shoes at the airport security check.

For men, plan your wardrobe around either black or brown shoes, but not both colors. Always pack shoes on the bottom of the roll on. That way, when luggage is upright, the shoes will not crush your clothes.

THE ART OF ACCESSORIES AND THE FOLD

Pack accessories (belts, scarves, socks, etc.) in small see through bags. That way you can place them in a drawer or leave in your suitcase as is without having to constantly look for these small items.

These items can be wedged in the area inside your suitcase between the roller extension bars. This will create a flatter surface to start folding your clothes.

I fold pants and skirts across this flat surface. Next, carefully start placing shirts and tops.

If you’re worried about wrinkles, they will come out if you hang your clothes near the shower in your bathroom. Over a short period of time, the steam from the shower will remove most wrinkles.

YOUR SECOND, SMALLER CARRY ON

When flying, besides roll on luggage placed in your overhead, you are also allowed a second piece of luggage that can fit under your seat.

In this, keep items that you will want to access during your flight or on arrival: medicines, toiletries, sunglasses, jewelry, laptop and chargers, magazines (preferred to books, as they are not as heavy to carry around and disposable when read).

If you’re staying in a hotel, you do not need to pack a hair dryer, shampoo or conditioner. Almost all hotels now provide these amenities.

Before your trip, start collecting sample sizes of sunscreen, deodorant, toothpaste, makeup, etc. or transfer your favorite personal items to smaller labeled bottles. I keep a small travel purse with my I.D., money and travel information inside at the top of this suitcase.

For men or women, if you want to bring a suit coat or jacket, don’t pack it. Wear it onto the plane. You can usually lay it on top of your overhead suitcase or sometimes you can have it hung in one of the plane’s closets.

REASONS TO ATTEMPT TO MINIMALIZE PACKING TO CARRY-ON LUGGAGE: 1. You will arrive with your luggage instead of waiting for it two days later at your hotel.

2. You will not waste time at the baggage carousel with 100 other people all waiting to grab a suitcase.

3. Your beautiful suitcase will not arrive damaged or torn open.

4. You will not be charged $25-$50 to check each bag.

5. With minimal choices, you will not have as much to unpack or “what to wear” decisions.
