The Untold Mission: A large portion of our mission is to train with and build relations with the Kuwait government and its people. In the coming months my unit is planning to volunteer at orphanages to donate toys to children, and our military female mentorship soldiers will volunteer at women’s shelters.

Most of my soldiers work six days a week, from 5 a.m. till 6 p.m. (often coming in on their own on their day off), to complete the mission. We also have a few volunteer times with nonprofit organizations designed to assist soldiers and veterans such as American Red Cross, USO and Team RWB. Homesick For: I am deployed with soldiers from Abbeville, New Orleans, New Roads and even another Comeaux High graduate. We all miss the great food and flavors found in kitchens of Louisiana and how it reminds us of the good times growing up there.

Tommy Smith

Known in the ‘70s for his vibrant personality shining from the LaFonda scene, Tommy “TDâ€? Smith went on air for the ďŹ rst time in the early ‘90s. Placed on The Dawg’s morning show (97.3) by Mike Grimsley, Smith quickly developed a loyal following.

By the mid-90s, he was not only the announcer for the Louisiana IceGators but for ULL sports in totality. In 2006 he founded Louisiana Honor Air, which has own over 2000 Louisiana veterans to see the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. for the ďŹ rst time free of charge.

So, where is TD Smith now?

After nearly three decades of informing - and entertaining -Acadiana, Smith retired in 2008 and moved back to his hometown in Florida. Not one to sit still just catching rays, he started BurgerSmiths on New Smyrna Beach. He is also the announcer for Stetson University. Smith summed it up by telling 337, “Life is good.�

Those who are self-employed or have complicated tax situations should meet with their CPA or tax preparer to review their current year tax projection. There may be time-sensitive strategies to implement before year-end. It may also be prudent to meet with your financial adviser to set goals for the following year based on how 2015 has shaped out.

FSA SPENDING

If you have a Flexible Spending Account with a balance, make sure to use it by year-end for qualifying purchases. Unlike Health Savings Accounts, which rollover, these funds are use it or lose it. If a balance is left unspent at year-end, you have basically given back those savings (and maybe far more).

MAX OUT RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS

For those contributing to a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, your annual deferral limit is $18,000 by the end of the

calendar year. An additional “catch-up” $6,000 can be made to these plans if over the age of 50. For those with IRAs, you can contribute up to a maximum of $5,500 ($6,500 if over age 50).

This can be funded as late as April 15, 2016.

MAKE A HOLIDAY SPENDING BUDGET

Before heading out the door to complete your holiday gift list, make sure to create a budget.

First decide what you can afford to spend in total and then assign a maximum dollar value to each gift. Focusing on staying on budget for each gift will ensure a feeling of guilt-free giving when the total budget is kept in check.

TAKE REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS (RMDS)

If you are age 70 ½ or older, you must take required minimum distributions from your traditional IRA and other qualified plans (including SEP, SIMPLE & defined contribution plans). These distributions must be taken by Dec. 31, 2015. However, those who turned 70 ½ in 2015 have until April 1, 2016.

Police Chief Jim Craft will be arming the boys in blue with body cameras and car-mounted thermal imaging equipment, as well as the servers needed to store all the footage from 200 officers every day.

Dear Todd, I am looking for tips to decorate my white bookshelves. Where do I start? Could you give me a few tips? Thank you.

- Niki Niki, Design by Todd is going to break it down for you step by step. Yes, styling a bookcase can be tricky, but with the right accessories, it is fun!

1. Take everything off your shelves.

2. Work “big to small,” meaning big books first.

The same applies when you do accessories next.

3. Group the books by subject: art, gardening, etc.

4. Organize books by color. It an old design trick that works great against your white shelves.

5. Place some books normally and stack some books allowing room on the sides for decorative vases in bold colors or frames.

6. Add trendy accessories, such as boxes, sculptures, bookends and baskets, for additional storage. Remember, work big to small.

7. Embrace negative space. Not everything has to go on the bookshelf. You don’t want it to look packed.

8. Feature at least one bookshelf with a standalone art piece (a sculpture).

Dear Todd, How can I add style to my home? I am on a just-out-of-college budget?

- Emily B. Great question Emily! You can easily tackle a do-it-yourself project. Try painting a piece of furniture. I did! I spray painted an old dark lamp base white, and WOW! Here is some advice for “color confidence” this is important because color can dramatically affects our mood.

When selecting a color, consider the feel of a room. In a bedroom, do you want the feeling to be soothing and peaceful or dramatic and intimate? Faded or muted cool colors and neutrals usually create a quieter feeling versus saturated colors that are more suited for drama.

WINTER WREATHS DIY Holiday Door Décor

Holiday wreaths are an inviting and beautiful way to decorate the entrance of your home. There are multiple styles to choose from: glittery deco mesh to traditional evergreen with mistletoe; quirky and cutesy to monogrammed, the customizable options are endless.

Check out these four basic steps to get you started on creating your own deco mesh door wreath. Warning: This form of creativity may be habit forming.

STEP 1: BASE Be sure to measure your door before purchasing your base.

Whatever size base you choose, add six to eight inches for the mesh and adornments that will fill in the space. Wire frames that already have twist ties are a time saver.

STEP 2: MESH Start by gathering the deco mesh leaving approximately four inches of lead; secure with a twist tie on the inner ring of the base. Measure out ten inches of mesh and make a poof to however wide you’d like your wreath to be. Lay flat and twist tie again.

Continue measuring out ten inches to ensure your wreath will be symmetrical, gathering the mesh with both hands and twisting into place until you’ve completed both inner and outer rings of the wire base.

When you get to the starting point, make one final loop and twist to secure the mesh. Leave approximately four inches of deco mesh as a “tail” to safeguard against the final loop coming loose from the tie.

STEP 3: EMBELLISHMENTS This is the fun part! There are innumerous options for embellishments to a deco mesh wreath. Ribbons, glittery sticks, ornaments, lights and natural elements are a few to consider.

Secure your selected embellishments either by using the twist ties or hot glue. Try not to get anything too heavy or it will pull your wreath lopsided.

STEP 4: PERSONALIZE Adding a sign with your family name or a monogrammed initial is a personal touch to make your DIY project complete!

Parc Tower Condominiums take elegance to new heights

Desiring a true hub within the Hub City, developer and visionary Glenn Stewart purchased 34 acres along Camellia Boulevard with the intention of developing an area that would be a tribute to Acadiana’s rich culture and heritage. “I wanted to create something beautiful that our community was lacking,” Stewart said.

With the first phase of Parc Lafayette well underway, Stewart turned his attention to the remaining 20-acre development.

His intention was to develop a luxurious residential property.

Stewart’s vision included something more progressive than the traditional neighborhood. His ideas included a highrise building that offered its residents not only a view of the city but features and amenities that one might enjoy in a fine hotel.

Continuing his design partnership with renowned architect and lifelong friend Kevin Gossen, who designed the buildings in phase one, it was fitting for the two to focus on the residential element of Parc Lafayette. That’s when the development known as Parc Tower Condominiums, commenced.

COMMUNITY FOCUS The timeless design of Parc Tower Condominiums is nothing short of impressive. Stewart and Gossen Architects first took into account land preservation, designing around eight-decade-old historical oaks planted

by Kaliste Saloom himself, and ensuring unobstructed views of the three existing lakes across Camellia Boulevard.

They then focused on what would soon be the tallest residential tower in Lafayette (Kevin’s father, Gerald Gossen, Sr., built the tallest standing local highrise, now called Chase Tower). Soon after, the team of industry experts fell into place, including ASX Construction who built the commercial buildings in phase one and real estate market gurus Debbie Horaist and Bill Bacque.

“We are dedicated to making every effort in working with local tradespeople and material suppliers. This project is about the community and that includes supporting the local economy,” Stewart stated. “Doug Ashy Building Materials and Coburn’s have gone out of their way to provide the high end finishes desired for the interiors of this project.”

ATTENTION TO DETAIL It is said that luxury is attention to detail, originality, exclusivity and, above all, quality. This is where Stewart and his team shine as masters of their trades.

Strong historical references to the founding contributors of Acadiana can be found in every unique statue and engraved quotation included in the architecture of phase one. Even the softscapes were selected to reflect European influences on the region. “We follow our passion, not a formula,” Gossen affirmed.

WORLD-CLASS AMENITIES The entire ground floor of Parc Tower is dedicated to amenities for the residents, although the wow factor continues all the way up to the penthouse views.

On-site amenities include a grand lobby, reception room for entertaining complete with bar area, board room, theatre room, residential library with bar, guest suites, a fitness center, covered parking and a pool located on the roof-top of the four story parking garage.

As a supporter of the arts, Stewart decided the building should also include a private music room. To top things off, the building will include concierge service and security features.

Parc Tower Condominiums will be located within a gated community with its own private park. This list doesn’t even include the numerous attractions like restaurants, shopping and a multicultural center within walking distance.

A STYLISH COMBINATION Parc Tower is a combination of stylish, high quality, single family residences that provide a maintenance free lifestyle. Debbie Horaist, Realtor with Van Eaton & Romero, is currently accepting pre-construction reservations and deposits for the proposed condominiums.

Because the project is in the pre-construction phase, floor plans are flexible and can be customized to the buyer’s individual needs. “If all goes well with the city of Lafayette, we expect to start construction during February 2016,” Stewart revealed.

Soon-to-be resident Judy Leggett summed it up best by saying, “I travel a lot and didn’t want all the upkeep of my current home. Parc Tower offers everything I have now plus more.”

When asked to feature a dish that showcases what DeGaulle Square is about, Chef Paul Krato presented pounded pork tenderloin breaded with parmesan herbed panko and lemon caper butter served over roasted butternut squash and tasso hash. This is a dish that comes from the hand of a skilled craftsman.

Cutting into the heart of this huge pork filet reveals the first hint that Chef Paul know his way around some pig. The bread crumbs add flavor without overpowering the star of the show.

Underneath the tenderloin is a bed of roasted butternut squash and tasso hash. This is a side that is so good that it should be served as an appetizer.

The Lemon/Caper Butter is sharp, and there is just enough of it to cut through the richness of the dish and accentuate the flavor palate. Yet another excellent use of ingredients by Chef Paul.

Is wheatgrass juice gluten-free?

Maybe, maybe not.

Cereal grasses are harvested prior to jointing. This is before the grain forms and any gluten is present.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture research chemists who specialize in wheat gluten and cereal proteins say gluten is only found in the seed kernel (endosperm) and not in the stem and leaves. If the grass is cut from a growing plant and does not include the seed kernel, it should be safe for those who follow the gluten- free diet.

The keywords in the above statement are “should be.”

Should be, in my book, is not clear and definitive; it is ambiguous.

The stem, grass and leaves of wheat products, which the producers of wheatgrass presumably use, do not

contain gluten. The question, however, becomes whether there is a way to 100 percent guarantee that no part of the seed is accidentally included in these products.

There is great concern for cross-contamination. Many growers do not test the product.

Personally, I don’t include wheatgrass in my diet, nor do I recommend it to my clients. The potential risk far outweighs any potential benefit.

It’s not all about gluten. It’s actually the wheat that most people have an allergy or intolerance to.

Many individuals are allergic to wheat, gliadin and oats, not just the gluten. So any part of the plant is unhealthy for them to ingest.

Addicted to Anxiety The unconscious snowball effect

By James Eckhoff, LPC, LAC Anxiety is, unfortunately, the norm for much of society. Whether it be due to traumatic events, work-based pressures or even just watching the news, we as a culture seem to be more sensitive to stressors in our lives. One possible explanation is that we are actually becoming habituated and addicted to anxiety itself.

When anxiety becomes a catalyst for other problems Anxiety is present to some degree in most behavioral and mental disorders, including addiction. However, in some respects, anxiety becomes more of a catalyst for other problems than simply a symptom.

For example, if someone with alcoholism has a stressful day at work, they may use this as a rationalization for having a drink.

Physiologically speaking, though, the brain is experiencing a stressproducing event and is immediately numbed by the alcohol. The brain does not like this response because it does not actually solve the stress, so it decides, “OK, next time I’ll make you even more anxious, maybe then you will fix things!” The result? Even more drinking.

This phenomenon also applies to non-substance or behavioral addictions, such as the increasingly common concern of video game or technology addiction. If we are dealing with a stressful situation, we might retreat to our phones, tablets or game systems to have a momentary sense of relief. In our brains, however, it is the same idea as the alcohol.

Balance relaxation with coping skills As we become more wrapped up in the process of replacing anxiety with something else, our brains are ramping up our stress response in retaliation! If this happens enough, we may become overwhelmed and stressed out about unimportant things because we are hypersensitive to anxiety itself.

Having a healthy balance of relaxation and coping skills, along with effective ways of decreasing stress itself is a much better answer than simple avoidance.

Clients have included people struggling with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and grief. Gretchen added, “We offer the tools to calm the mind, so within a moment of discomfort, a person will still be able to stay centered and make well thought out decisions.”

This type of practice also builds confidence. “It reinforces the importance of both boundaries and flexibility on and off the mat.”

Not every counseling session will be physical in nature. “The main goal is to focus on present moment awareness,” confirmed Jessica.

By Dr. Kelly Cobb Physicians are always telling patients to eat right and get enough sleep, but now more than ever the relationships between the two are becoming clearer. Snoring is not just an aggravation to your bedmate but a wake-up call that the body is in danger.

Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are at risk for many diseases, with high blood pressure and heart disease receiving most of the press. Yet it seems that this population of people with OSA are at increased risk of fatty liver disease independent of weight, alcohol intake or use of hepatotoxic medications.

How does sleep apnea affect the liver?

The liver uses up a lot of oxygen to do its job, and if it is denied oxygen repeatedly, it can become injured. Studies are showing that hypoxia (low oxygen) alone can accelerate fatty liver by impacting cholesterol metabolism and increasing insulin resistance.

The health of the liver is crucial because it is the first organ to see all the substances absorbed in the small bowel and acts as a processing center. How did he propose? We love scavenger hunts! So he made a scavenger hunt all over Rayne and Lafayette at special places for the both of us and had a note and letters on posters of “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” at each location, and ended the scavenger hunt back at Rayne Catholic Elementary were we met. He also got my brother to drive me around all day and video the proposal, so I can always remember it.

Why did you say yes? Brandon has always been the one for me. He is the only one who can truly make me laugh. We are total opposites that complement one another. I have always admired his drive and ambition in life. And his blue eyes are just the icing on the cake.

Entering the Holiday War-Zone Shift anger into passion by fighting fair

By Des Coroy When it comes to the holidays, we have great expectations about experiencing joy, fun and unconditional love, yet often it’s a time of stress as we attempt to meet those lofty ideals. These tensions can often erupt into arguments with our significant other.

Here are a few suggested Rules of Engagement which can assist you both in shifting the holiday tension into holiday passion: STAY ON THE ISSUE – Do not bring up issues that are unrelated to the topic being discussed. It’s very important to resolve the issue being argued before moving on to another one.

AVOID USING ABSOLUTES – Words used to describe your partner’s behavior such as “always,” “never,” “forever” and “constantly” are inflammatory by nature and will tend to provoke anger. Words such as “sometimes,” ”‘often” or “occasionally” are usually a more accurate description of the frequency of a transgression.

DON’T REHASH THE PAST – It’s not fair to use resentments from the past as a battering ram to beat your partner into submission. The past is over and gone so let it rest in peace.

USE TIMEOUTS – If anger escalates out of control, it’s important for one of you to call a timeout. Walk away from the argument until you have both calmed down.

NEVER USE VIOLENCE – Anger is a powerful emotion, and if you get to a place where you’re pushing each other around physically then it’s time to immediately walk away and defuse the situation.

There is never a justification for using any physical force on your partner.

AVOID VERBAL ABUSE – Calling your partner obscene names or using derogatory statements are aggressive acts of emotional abuse. Criticize the action or behavior but not the total person.

STOP RAISING YOUR VOICE – It’s natural to have a little intensity in your voice when you’re having an argument but excessively raising the volume can cause your argument to escalate into a full-fledged battle.

REMEMBER THE LOVE – No matter how heated the argument, remember that the person you’re feeling angry toward is the person you love.

With both of you agreeing to the Rules of Engagement, the only fireworks going off will be in the bedroom.

Heat griddle or skillet over medium-high heat or to 375°F. In 1 medium bowl, stir Bisquick mix, milk and eggs until blended

Lightly oil griddle. For each pig face, pour slightly less than 1/4 cup batter onto hot oiled griddle. Pour scant tablespoonful batter onto griddle for snout and another scant tablespoonful for ears.

Cook pancakes until edges are crusty. Turn; cook until golden.

To serve, place large pancakes on individual serving plates.

Place 1 small pancake in center of each face for snout; poke 2 holes for nostrils with end of handle of wooden spoon. Cut second small pancake in half for ears; place at top of face. You can use any fruit or candy for the eyes and snout!

“It truly is amazing to watch Becky Prejean’s work with The Dreams Come True Foundation. These kids are her life, and she has made a huge impact with what she does for these children,” said Jake Alleman, owner of Another Broken Egg and huge supporter of this charitable organization.

Football, basketball and the new RCAF director

MEET THE NEW RCAF DIRECTOR Hailing from the small town of Jasper, Indiana, Jim Harris lives and breathes sports. At 36 years old, he received his undergrad degree is in sports marketing and management and his MBA is in sports administration.

Following 5 ½ years in athletics development at Indiana University, Harris ran the athletic development office Ohio University. His last position before moving to Acadiana was at Tampa University of South Florida where he ran their athletic development office for two years.

Harris’ first day in Lafayette was 8/31/15, which happened to be the day of the Grand Theater shooting. Of the incident he said that he may not be a Cajun by birth, but the way the community came together made him want to be an adopted son.

“I love this area. The culture really speaks to my personality - all of the food and fun!” said Harris. He went to speak of how much he relates to the sports enthusiasts in the area, which was another highlight of accepting the position as the Ragin’ Cajun Athletic Foundation director.

• The RCAF director reports to a 24 person board.

• The role is to lead all athletic fundraising at ULL. • Harris is the first person ever in this position, as they didn’t have it previously.

Lafayette Swampcats Select football thrives in Louisiana

By Brandon Comeaux Six years ago, Lafayette Swampcats co-owners Rusty Noel and Vance Roberts decided to do something many people said could not be done: Start the first select football program in Louisiana.

“We wanted something more than recreational football,” said Noel. “We wanted to be able to make sure these kids were ready for high school by providing a higher level of football.”

Despite hearing the criticism, this trailblazing program has made it work and represents Louisiana incredibly well. The Swampcats have won six national championships, been national runner-up six times, and hosted two select national championships in Lafayette.

When the IceGators launched in 1995, they became the first minor pro hockey team in the state of Louisiana. It is a program that has become accustomed to winning, making numerous trips to the playoffs, finishing in the finals twice during its time in the East Coast Hockey League, and finishing in the semifinals twice in the Southern Professional Hockey League.

This hasn’t been by accident as both the people of the community and area businesses have shown their support for the locally-owned franchise.

“I think the support you get from the community is better,” said IceGators General Manager Louis Dumont. “Our owners conduct business in Lafayette and

ages 7-14 years old and divides them into four groups that are all currently ranked in the top 10 nationally. The Swampcats have been a model for other programs.

They donate equipment and teach them the foundation on which to build a successful program.

“Last year was the oldest group of Swampcats to graduate high school,” said Noel. “21 kids are playing at the college level this year.” One of those graduates, former Carencro High quarterback Tyler Gaspard, is now coaching for the Swampcats.

It follows them on their quest for more select national championships as they compete in multiple tournaments, throughout the month of December and in the Big Dog Bowl National Championship on January 9-10. That television series will air next fall.

By Curt Guillory There’s just something about college basketball. The thump of the ball against the hardwood; the squeak of the shoes as the players constantly change direction; plays called from the sidelines all add up to entertainment like none other.

What makes college basketball so unique is that any team can compete on a national level regardless of the school size. But some of the best college basketball around comes from Baton Rouge in a little place locals call “the Pee Mac.” The season is still fresh in December, and January brings SEC play as the road to March Madness starts its uphill climb. The LSU men’s basketball team looks to make some serious noise in the 2015-16 season with just two little words: “He’s here.”

The “he” of course comes from Down Under. Ben Simmons is the

consensus number one ranked high school recruit in America and hails from Australia. He is also the number one draft pick on every mock NBA draft held to date.

The 6 foot 9 inch (or 10 inch depending on whose stats you choose to believe) freshman has the numbers to back up the hype too. Leading perennially dominant Montverde Prep to a 31-1 season all the while breaking records like Rhonda Rousey breaks noses.

Simmons won’t be alone. The “Killer B’s” Antonio Blakeney and Brandon Sampson will fill the void left by Jordon Mickey and Jarell Martin who left for the NBA as sophomores. Strength in the paint will come from 6 foot 10 inch, 235 pound Craig Victor. The Arizona transfer and New Orleans native will be eligible for LSU court time in December.

With such a young team however, leadership will be crucial. For that Jones will turn to the likes of Keith Hornsby, Tim Quarterman, Josh Gray and Jalyn Patterson.

The Spirit Squads include the cheerleaders, mascots and Tiger Girls. The cheerleaders participate in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and gymnastics. Tiger Girls participate at men’s and women’s basketball, and mascots participate at all athletic events. When it comes to first-class entertainment and keeping the crowd pumped, the Spirit Squads are all-in!

• Mike’s rolling cage is parked next to the opposing team’s locker room so that they must pass in front of him to get to the field. Talk about intimidation!

• According to tradition, every growl Mike lets out before the game is equal to one that the Tigers will score.

• Around 1985 Mike’s lock on his cage was cut as a prank. The mighty Bengal roamed the campus until he was tranquilized and returned to his cage.

• Mike’s environment is considered one of the best in the country not only for its size but also for its state of the art use of plant life, terrain and water.

By Brandon Comeaux As a 5-year-old boy, I wanted nothing more than to become a race car driver! Terry and Bobby Labonte driving around the tracks had me mesmerized.

My dad and I, however, didn’t share the same passion. He loved watching the Saints play.

Like any young boy, I wanted to be like him so I began watching the Saints too and learning that

football is more than just a game.

It’s about connection. Connecting with your family - your teammates - and being a part of something larger than yourself.

Football not only means a lot to me, but it also impacts others. It serves as a teaching tool for life lessons. The game teaches unity, loyalty, trust and responsibility.

However, I have learned that perseverance is the most relatable to life. This game has many ups and downs, but it’s how you respond to the hardships and obstacles, pushing past them to achieve greatness.

When the Saints play, I feel a part of a team.

Being a Saints fan means I am a part of a brotherhood, a bond that connects me to other Saints fans.

It doesn’t discriminate against gender, race or age. Saints football relates to everyone.

As I watch my Saints play, whether they make the playoffs or struggle to win much of anything, I always go back to those days as a little boy and am so grateful that my dad did everything in his power to raise me like he did – rooting with a passion for the black and gold.

SEEDING

1. The power rating for each school is determined by: Result of Contest Add Win (5 Points) Plus Opponents Win (100%) Lose (0 points) Plus Opponents Win (50%) District Champion Plus 1 Power Point

In Classes 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A and B, all teams are seeded (1-32) according to their power ranking. In Class C, all teams are seeded (1-28) according to their power ranking.

Schools that fail to play 15 games during the regular season, including district play and invitational tournament play, are ranked separately using the same ranking system that is used to rank schools that played at least 15 games or more during the regular season. These schools are ranked at the bottom of the bracket and seeded accordingly until all remaining positions on the bracket are filled.

For both girls’ and boys’, Classes 1A-5A schools only count wins against Class B and/or C schools beginning with the 20th calendar week.

Schools that are classified as B and C schools count all games played.

After schools are ranked, they are seeded from the highest to lowest against the highest to lowest seeded teams that have played at least 18 games or more during the regular season. Then they Playoffs begin!

2. A school’s power rating is the total points of games played divided by the total games played during the regular season.

3. Once the number has been decided, if a team was the District Champion then one power point is added to their total score.

4. Contest played against out-of-state opponents, sub-varsity opponents, Hall of Fame games and district playoff (tiebreaker) don’t count in determining a school’s power rating.

PARADISE Camping on The Island - Pecan Island that is

Jack Cole was herding cattle close to the Louisiana coast when he spotted a cheniere of oak and pecan trees. Wanting to feed that envie for pecans, he headed south to the “island” — or high ground — in the wetlands. But while filling his pockets with tasty pecans Cole found something rather peculiar, a mound of bleached human bones.

Such is the legend of Pecan Island, now more known for fishing camps than Native American burial mounds, which unfortunately were mostly destroyed by treasure hunters over the years. Pecan Island — not a true island but an oak cheniere — attracts outdoors enthusiasts to fish, crab, hunt and pass a good time.

HERE’S SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT PECAN ISLAND: • Alligators inhabit the backwaters, a ripe environment that attracted the folks of “Swamp People” to tape an episode in the area. The show’s Elizabeth Cavalier Choate lives in Pecan Island, sells a “Louisiana Bayou Seasoning” and has just published a cookbook called “Gator Queen Liz Cookbook.”

• The “island” was never heavily populated, which is why area children attended school that offered grades one through 12 within one building. But what a lovely building, complete with inside Olympic swimming pool!

When Hurricane Rita did a number on the community in 2005, Vermilion Parish School Board starting busing children inland, and the 39,000-square-foot building stood vacant until recently renovated into a huntingfishing camp with private suites, basketball courts, walking track and an eating area the size of — well, a school cafeteria. The building’s currently up for sale.

• The area is seriously a dream for fishermen and hunters, full of alligator, deer, nutria and waterfowl, not to mention the fishing. But you can also head down the road a ways to Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge with its Gulf beaches and inland cheniere ridge and shoot nature instead with a camera.

The fall is an excellent time to view gorgeous colorful songbirds heading south for the winter. For information on public use, visit www.wlf.louisiana.gov/rockefeller/public-use.

• The Smithsonian visited Pecan Island in the 1920s and found Native American mounds dating back centuries. However, a landowner later decided to sell two mounds as dirt fill.

While excavating the mound, an exceptional carved deer antler was found, later determined to be rare art from the Coles Creek period. This “Morgan Effigy” is owned by the Vermilion Historical Society and on display at the Alliance Center Museum in downtown Abbeville.

The Louisiana State Duck Calling Championship is a local contest that is sanctioned by and a qualifier for the World’s Duck Calling Championship. 24-year-old Lafayette native Brook Richard went through three rounds using his RichN-Tone duck call in the senior duck calling competition among opponents from Arkansas and Louisiana. Richard won first place and the opportunity to travel to compete in the World Duck Calling Championship held in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

PREPARE

St. Petersburg is a beautiful and elaborate place, so waste not a moment wandering. I studied private tour companies and hotels, as well as historical novels and biographical literature (“Peter the Great”).

Our historically significant hotel, the Astoria, was perfectly positioned to walk to important sights, museums, restaurants, pubs but also provided a knowledgeable driver/guide who was eager to share his wonderful city. This was a most important factor in our enjoyment of the city.

PALACES

Palaces are abundant: everywhere and in every size. Small palaces became museums, such as the Faberge Museum,

housing the intricate and elaborately bejeweled eggs (you really don’t know Easter dggs until you’ve seen a diamond and sapphire encrusted egg with tiny doors and wings, bearing portraits and playing classical violin).

The Heritage Museum consists of six beautiful connected buildings, divided into important rooms: the Diamond Room, the Carriage Rooms, the Throne Rooms. It would take months to go through each, so a guide is recommended to choose the most valuable, historically important rooms and save the others for next time.

Our first night was spent in a larger palace now used for fantastic music, elaborately costumed Russian folk dancing, wine, cheese, caviar, displays of local paintings, nesting dolls and extravagant souvenirs.

A short drive to another palace takes you to Peterhof, overlooking the Gulf of Finland and once the golden destination of ships from the Baltic Sea. Amid the luxurious cascading fountains, domes of gold leaf, floors and columns of marble there were photos of the German occupation, hidden furniture and art, the fires and attempts to destroy this history.

Like the Catholic Church, the Russian Orthodox Church believed that the best way to honor and praise God here on earth was through ornate and luxurious Cathedrals. The Church of Spilled Blood, known for its Onion Domes specific to Russian architecture, is so full of golden icons and colorful mosaics that it makes one wonder how or why anyone (Nazis or Communists)

would try to eliminate these places.

Equally breathtaking is the Cathedral of St. Isaacs with walls covered in mosaics forming saintly portraiture. The Peter and Paul Fortress houses the tombs of the Romanov Family. Being there is a solemn, reverential experience underscored by the truly sorrowful tone of our guide.
