f you are reading this, then we must have successfully gotten the 5th annual edition of The Flash Today’s fall football and volleyball magazine to the printer.

It’s no small feat.

An accomplishment made possible for one reason only and that’s the advertisers you see on its pages. From pest control specialists to doctors and banks, they have all bonded together to bring you YOUR KIDS in full color.

I want to THANK THEM! Without our advertisers, there is no magazine.

I hope you take it upon yourself to do the same. Of course, the best thing you can do is go by their place of business and see what they have to offer you. They have supported YOUR KIDS with money they could have spent elsewhere.

It’s undoubtedly an excellent outlook for area high school football and volleyball this season. Stephenville opens ranked number four in Class 4A, while DeLeon

is number three in 2A. Tarleton volleyball is opening the season ranked at number 18 in NCAA D2 play.

There’s no shortage of great players to watch, and many are getting preseason recognition like Stephenville running back Krece Nowak and linebacker, Blu Caylor who are Texas Football all-state picks.

Other Texas Football high school all-state picks are Hico defensive back Brandon Luna and DeLeon defensive lineman Kelan Hodges.

Just before our publication Tarleton State University got the news Tyrell Thompson has been named a preseason all-American by D2Football.com. The defensive lineman had 55 tackles last season including nine for losses.

Senior Leadership

Hico’s fortunes will rely heavily on the play of senior quarterback Briley Johnson who established himself as a multithreat athlete last season as he was the offensive general while also playing defensive back.

If rushing for 872 yards, passing for 500 more and scoring 13 touchdowns weren’t enough he was also busy returning kicks.

Johnson is at the helm for a reason he is Hico’s top athlete on the gridiron, and he has a firm grasp on the expectations of coach Randy Thornton.

After slipping out of the playoffs in the first round this year the Tiger senior will be seeking to make good on Hico’s dark-horse potential.

Eyes on the Prize

DeLeon’s Kelan Hodges is a Texas Football preseason all-state pick and quarterback Kevin Yeager’s dad coach David Yeager is the preseason coach of the year in Class 2A.

The Bearcats have enjoyed a remarkable run the past three seasons, and they have one thing no other team can boast, and that’s Yeager is a fouryear starter on both sides of the football. He’s gathering attention (like David is his dad instead of the coach) for his athletic play, but he’s got that one other “it” of growing up in a coaching family where even his brother Kody is on staff.

When it’s all said and done Yeager has an excellent chance at the all-state honors he missed in the preseason. DeLeon went 12-1 last season while Yeager accounted for 43 touchdowns and 3,054 yards.

Wide receiver Chris Cox has speed to spare and grabbed seven touchdowns and just shy of 1,000 receiving yards last year.

Hodges is described as an “offensive nightmare” recording 100 tackles and ten sacks in 2017. Dynamite comes in small packages, and wide receiver and defensive back Jeffery Hodges is said to be the teams toughest player despite being one of the smallest.

From behind the O’Line Stephenville’s Krece Nowak ran for more than 1,700 yards in 13 games last season much of it due to the efforts of Stephenville offensive linemen like Lane York and Jacob Poston. The senior running back missed two games last season due to injury and could easily top 2,000 yards if he stays healthy.

To do that the Jackets can’t depend on the 5-8, 160-pounder to carry the ball every down and will look to spread the ball around with their multi-pronged offensive scheme.

Texans in a Flash: If the third time is the charm things have to be looking up for Tarleton State football coach Todd Whitten as he enters the third season of his third trip at the university.

to be looking up after Tarleton rounded out the 2018 season with a trip to a bowl game only to have victory slip away much like the end of the season in Lone Star Conference play.

Despite having a bevy

of talented receivers, the Texans were unable to stretch the field and the season took its toll on a talented offensive line.

Tarleton’s first winning record since 2013 (6-5) had a tipping point, and it was a heartbreaking

loss against Midwestern State where the Texans had the undefeated 8-0 Mustangs on their heels in a road game only to lose in overtime 45-42.

That was followed up by a 33-21 loss to A&M Commerce and a 38-31

“I thought we left something out there last year,” Whitten said. “ We went out to Western New Mexico, and they really took it to us. Nothing against them, but I thought we were the better team, and we came away with a loss.”

You don’t need to attend a coaching school to quickly realize the Texans’ biggest question mark will be at quarterback where an open competition exists between seniors Ben Holmes (Orchard Park, NY) and Derek Kiser (Burnet, TX) Kiser played in three games last season including starts against Delta State (20-36) and Western Oregon (19-30) but didn’t throw a touchdown while tossing four interceptions.

“We are an improved football with some veteran football players who are talented and stepping up into the leadership roles like we hope they will do,” Whitten said. “We are in shorts and pads right now, but we will soon see who is prepared to play.”

TexAnns in a Flash: Tarleton has been picked to finish third in the Lone Star Conference standings when the league announced its annual preseason rankings.

Tarleton finished behind Angelo State (304) and West Texas A&M (282) in the top two spots, respectively, and ahead of Texas A&M-Commerce (263) at the No. 4 spot.

Texas Woman’s, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Eastern New Mexico, and Midwestern State finished in the top eight of the polls, respectively. The top eight teams in the final standings will advance to the

Lone Star Conference Championship tournament. Western New Mexico, Cameron, and UT Permian Basin rounded out the poll.

Tarleton is coming off a 29-6 season last year, in which the program swept the Lone Star Conference Championships for the first time in school history.

They advanced to the NCAA postseason for the fourth straight season and will bring back four all-conference starters – Adrianna Knutson, Adriana Darthuy, Hannah McManus, and Amber Strange.

If you want to score points against Tarleton State you will have to get past their talented front line and that’s when teams run into problems at the hands of the TexAnns’ Adrianna Knutson who is the team’s official designat-

ed “Libero/defensive” player.

Known by the nickname “AK” the 5-3 powerhouse is fluid motion on the court and averaged 555 digs over the past two seasons. The TexAnns open the season ranked number 18.

Yellow Jackets in a Flash: The Yellow Jackets are back after going 12-3 last season and opening the season ranked number three in Class 4-A football; however, being back on top and staying there are two different stories.

From opening their season on the road against Argyle the number one team in the state, Stephenville has an action-packed schedule with every stop along the way a potential offensive explosion.

The regular season games count on the record but it’s District 5 4-A D2 coach Greg Winder will be worried about as every

single team went the playoffs last season including Waco La Vega that went 14-1 and a state semi-final berth.

The Jackets appear to have one of the best defensive units they have had in a while with an All-State linebacker coming off a 166-tackle season that included ten sacks.

The big bruiser was also a short-yardage specialist on offense.

Senior slotback/wideout/defensive back/utility player Gage Graham appears he can play just about anywhere the Jackets have a need as he

676-offense yards and five interceptions on defense in 2017. Graham didn’t get any preseason nods for all-state honors, but Winder is not shy about stating “Graham is the best player on this team!”

That’s a big statement considering the Jackets also have a second All-State player in Krece Nowak who rushed for 1,720 yards scoring 16 TDs in 13 games.

The starting quarterback remains the big question with Cole Stanley and Kade Renfro spending equal time under center with the first team offense.

Honeybees in a Flash: Stephenville coach Shay Douglas hit the ground running in her first year. The former all-state middle blocker and state champion player is taking over for Fran Metzger the only volleyball coach the Honeybees have ever known.

Taking over for your former 23-year head coach has to be a daunting challenge, and it’s one Douglas is prepared to take on.

Douglas exudes confidence, demands discipline and calls for instant accountability from her players and she is planning on carrying just 12 girls on her varsity squad as she prefers seasoning

her players if they aren’t going to immediately contribute.

“It’s a long season, and we have lots of time to work on,” Douglas said. “Our early matches are going to be building blocks for district and the playoffs.”

Middle blocker Jaydi Griffin is the only sophomore to make the varsity squad that includes seniors Emily Stroebel, Hannah Huckabee, Chloe Goodman, Jayci Morton, Destiny Hale and Savannah Ivey.

The Honeybee juniors include Gabie Lucero, Callan Gibbons, Salette Rios, Karlee Easterling and Aubreyanna Ziegler.

Bearcats in a Flash: When Texas Football lists two of your players as preseason District MVPs for both sides of the football and then throws in All-State status for one player the pressure has to be rough.

Throw in the fact they think you are the preseason Coach of the year and things get ramped up a notch for coach David Yeager.

“It’s nice to see the guys getting the attention,” coach Yeager said while ignoring the fact he’s been honored too.

“They have worked hard for it.”

Yeager’s son Kevin leads the Bearcats’ offense and as a four-year starter can audible when he sees the opportunity and is demanding field general.

DeLeon went 12-1 last season and have all the tools in place for a breakout season with defensive lineman Kelan Hodges as the cornerstone of the Bearcats defense.

Some predictions place DeLeon in the state championship against Refugio

this season, but the Bearcats have to get through a tough regular season schedule.

Making things nastier is being in District 7-2A D1 with Crawford, Goldthwaite, and Hico which are teams known for being able to trip unbeaten opponents no matter what their record.

“We are going to do things the way we always have,” Yeager said. “We’ve had a good deal of success, and we hope to enjoy more of the same.”

Lions in a Flash: Dublin always seems to be the school that grabs the short straw when it comes to the UIL’s district realignments and this year was no different as the Lions find themselves in District 6-3A D2.

The Lions will have an infusion of talent from it’s 7-3 junior varsity squad. Coach Bob Cervetto is going to expect his younger players to grow up fast and they will need to with four district teams making the playoffs last

year.

Comanche’s Indians head the pack after going 12-2 and making it to the regional finals in 2017. Jacksboro was 11-2 and a regional semi-finalist while Tolar 7-5 was an area finalist.

Don’t mention Tolar around town in Dublin because the Lions were so close last year and lost a 30-28 game that was tied at 28-28 before a safety happened.

“One play didn’t define that game,” Cervetto said. “We could have

done several things differently to not be in that situation.”

Being so close has served as motivation for players like Jared Ricks and Jacob Stanley.

Ricks is a great linebacker with an ability to ball hawk and bring bruising hits. Stanley

is a one-man highlight reel in playing on both sides of the football and returning kicks.

If you are looking for two particular games to watch this football season Dublin’s matchups against Comanche and Tolar are prime material.

Hico TIGERS

Tigers in a Flash: Hico’s Tigers are picked to finish in the middle of the pack in District 7-2A D1 after going 7-4 last season and making it to the bi-district round where they just fizzled out.

Looking back at 2017 Hico could easily have been 8-2 or better on the season but were just a couple of plays away

from doing that. The Tigers matched up toeto-toe in DeLeon who went on to a 12-1 season record.

Hico returns the speedy Briley Johnson at quarterback, and he threw for 500 yards while rushing for 872 on the ground. Johnson scored 13 touchdowns last season, and coach Randy

Thornton will want him to spread the ball around and take advantage of his teammates’ skills.

Luc Hyles, Brandon Luna, Hunter Koonsman, Adrian Jimenez, Robert Warren, Karson Zant, Pablo Cruz, Brendan McKinney and Jordan Harrison are all players listed by Texas Football as someone to watch when

they hit the field.

With DeLeon and Crawford listed as the top picks for the playoffs the Tigers will be looking to sneak up on somebody and win one of those game people think they can’t.

Long-time Hico fans can tell you that the Tigers have a knack for doing just that.

Cardinals in a Flash: Lingleville coach James Boyle and Ken Davis have switched roles with Boyle now calling the shots for the Cardinals after serving as an assistant to Davis last year.

Both men have their work cut out for them just like the Cardinals do with only ten players coming out this season.

Players like Jesus Lopez, Luke Whiteley, Jason Misemer, Felipe Flores, Julian Ortuno and Luke Miller are going to have to get seasoned early if they want to make good on the prediction of finishing second in District 14-1A. Gorman is picked to lead the district while last year’s 12-1 May is picked third. Numbers are the biggest problem facing the Cardinals as they will be facing football teams with two and three times their numbers.

Misemer threw for 543 yards and ten touchdowns last season and had 71 tackles (led team) last year. Whiteley has also shined on both sides of the football for Lingleville with 259 yards receiving and five touchdowns. Whiteley’s work at receiver has paid off on defense with four interceptions. Flores had ten sacks last year and brought a load when he put the quarterback down.

Bobcats in a Flash: If Bluff Dale coach Keith Hughes likes a challenge, he has undoubtedly gotten one in District 10 1-A D2 as he takes a young team into the UIL for the first time and is up against one of the better six-man leagues.

It will be hard to not feel like a minnow among the sharks that include Gordon, Gustine, and Strawn which are all contenders in one way or another year and year out.

That’s not to say the Bobcats aren’t going to score points and they proved that in a scrimmage against Sidney in a four-way team affair in Lingleville.

One factor that could play heavily in Bluff Dale’s favor is a home stretch of four games in the regular season and two of three district games also being played at the Bearcats’ house.

Three Way BRAVES

Braves in a Flash: The Three Way Braves will have their work cut out for them in 2018 with seven underclassmen playing their first varsity schedule in District 11-1A D2.

“We are going to play things a little tighter than I have in the past,” coach Troy Sparks said as he

overlooked workers erecting stands recently.

Construction has been moving along for Three Way, and it’s to make room for a school that finds itself growing by leaps and bounds.

It is Sparks’ second year in Three Way after

working in Lingleville, and he’s ready for the challenge.

“We’ve got to keep our heads up and execute,” Sparks said. “Mainly we are going to have to stay healthy.”

With seven players on the roster that means everyone is going to play on both sides of the ball

and being on the sideline is for a quick break.

Iredell is picked to top district play after going 10-3 last season and finishing as a regional finalist. Walnut Springs is slated for second with Cransfills Gap a strong third. That leaves Three Way with no place to go but up.

FAITH KNIGHTS

Knights in a Flash: “Dynasty” is generally the defining term for teams that have achieved the highest levels of accomplishment in their sports. In football, it would be the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s and the modern day New England Patriots.

Somehow the word “dynasty” doesn’t seem to define Stephenville’s Faith Knights who have rolled off seven straight state

championships and three national titles in private school six-man football.

The National Homeschool Football Championship Series crowned Stephenville Faith the 2017 national champion last December. The Knights also won national titles in 2011 and 2012.

More of the same is expected of the 2018 edition of the Knights are coached

Texas Football expects the Knights to win an eighth-straight title picking them over six-man teams from much larger cities like Austin, Canton, and El Paso.

Doing It All Dublin’s Jacob Stanley is a doit-all player who doubles at wide receiver and running back on offense and then turns around to play defensive back and return kicks. Stanley provided 923 yards of offense and nine touchdowns last season and will be a go-to player for the Lions.

He’s a playmaker who’s fun to watch when he gets into the open field. Stanley will need to get into the open field plenty this season as the senior continues his leadership role.

Dublin is picked to finish out of the running for the playoffs, and that has served as motivation to players like linebacker Jared Ricks who loves to play football for the intensity of the game. Ricks is a quick and bruising player who has a goal of doubling his 82-tackle 2017 season.

Quarterback Cy Wing saw limited action last season and has an excellent grasp of Dublin’s offensive schemes where he will be throwing to Stanley, Hagen Huffman and Mark Ybarra.

Dublin’s hidden asset may be last year’s junior varsity that finished 7-3 last year which was the exact opposite record of the varsity. District 6-3A includes Comanches, Jacksboro, Tolar, Millsap, Dublin and Rio Vista. Coach Bob Cervetto again heads the Lions.

Defending the Title Stephenville FAITH has a title, or seven, to defend this year. In addition to the seven state championships, the Knights received a third National championship last season.

Early predictions say the ‘FAITHful’ can look for another deep playoff run and, probably, another ring for head coach Nick Braun and company.
