A Letter From The Editor A Legacy of Strength and Faith.

Before coming across a random image last year of Aubreigh Nicholas on Instagram, I had never heard of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma or DIPG. It was then that I wanted to help Aubreigh and her family with their mission to spread awareness and decided to dedicate this issue to Aubreigh and her fight with DIPG. Like thousands of others, I followed her journey for almost a year and along the way learned about Aubreigh.

Sadly, the day we finished this issue on August 15th, Aubreigh passed away.

While my initial letter was to bring much needed awareness of the devastating effects of DIPG and its dire need of more government funding and a cure, I decided to change my letter.

I want to share instead something else that Aubreigh spread awareness of: How to live. In my opinion Aubreigh did, in many ways, defeat DIPG. She fought with undying faith in God, her family, and herself. She faced each and every challenge with confidence and bravery. She remained true to her beautiful self, inside and out, every step of the way. Her spirit always shined through.

Aubreigh spread awareness to live the way she did with her love for God, her family, as a caring daughter and big sister, loyal friend, and with her education, as an honor roll student, and her love of dance: she spread awareness to live life front and center with a smile, with confidence. To have fun and enjoy each step of life. To love family and friends passionately and with a genuine caring spirit. To be a loyal friend, to laugh, laugh often and find humor in every day situations, to be silly and sassy, to work, even when tired, when learning new tasks, and to do your best in everything you do. Aubreigh, a fierce fighter, taught us to fight with undying faith in the face of adversity and live hopeful even when things seem hopeless. To tell those you love “I love you� often with a loving smile.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet this amazing soul in person, I will remember Aubreigh for her smile, the sound of her laugh, her zest for life, her courage and her dancing.

Aubreigh is loved by so many near and far. Her legacy will live in the hearts and minds of those she touched forever. I believe when she passed she regained her life, she was free again to dance and have her voice heard.

Aubreigh did a lot to help spread awareness of DIPG. She also spread awareness to not take a moment of life for granted.

For an intimate party for 12 to an affair for 300, A Taste of Britain provides takeaway and full-service catering, featuring unique fare not found most anywhere else.

For over a quarter century, Main Liners have enjoyed A Taste of Britain’s Afternoon Tea experience. It includes tea sandwiches, award-winning scones and pastries prepared by their in-house pastry chef, and a pot of aromatic loose-leaf tea. Owners Debbie Heth and Edward Pierce offer elegant, satisfying options to fit every appetite.

The menu includes hearty, classically British dishes like Beef Cottage Pie, a Ploughman’s Platter, and Chicken Pot Pie. Sausage Rolls are served with Colman’s Mustard, and the Cornish Pasties are served with HP Sauce, the proper British accompaniments. The shop’s original founder hails from England and her traditional British recipes are still in use. The lunch menu is extensive, offering interesting salads, frittatas, and soups made from scratch. The friendly staff focuses on making guests feel welcome and happy to be there.

his October, Brandywine Ballet presents a repertoire production of professional ballet and contemporary dance in downtown West Chester—Balanchine, Barber & Brandywine. The performance will feature new works by local choreographers Tim Early, Meredith Rainey, Nancy Page, as well as the world-renowned George Balanchine. Returning to the West Chester stage is Balanchine’s Serenade, a work presented in four movements of “Sonatina,” “Waltz,” “Russian Dance,” and “Elegy.”

Featured in this repertoire production is Nancy Page’s Voices, set primarily to the music of Samuel Barber, a famous American musician and composer born in West Chester in 1910. A musical prodigy, he later became famous for his internationally celebrated composition Adagio for Strings.

This piece serves as the centerfold of Voices, which features a heroine torn between angels and devils of looming insanity brought on by the inner grappling of old communal norms and a newfound expression of freedom. Are the voices in her head a sign of impending doom, or will they set her free? The other piece featured in Voices is Northern Lights by Ola Gjeilo, a Norwegian composer and pianist living in the United States.

Meredith Rainey presents two new works choreographed on the dancers of Brandywine Ballet. PMG is an interpretation of the intricate Prelude, Menuets 1 & 2, and Gigue from J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite #1 in G. It is a playful investigation of the complicated, yet accessible music performed by Yo-Yo Ma. With musical concepts such as point-counterpoint, canon, fugue, rhythm, and melody, Rainey’s choreography

has the dancers transverse the stage with a youthful speed, grace, and agility. His second work, Birdland, was inspired by the characteristics, behaviors, and movements of birds, and draws parallels between humanity and our fine-feathered friends set to the music of Oliver Davis.

Tim Early, Brandywine Contemporary’s Resident Choreographer, uses patterns and layers of movement to create a fabric overlay to Ezio Bosso’s Symphony No. 2 in his piece titled Tooth and Nail. The first movement is a journey through undefined pathways of light and movement. The second

begins a clear view of angles and lines set by the movement and formations. Early incorporates simple gestures and improvisational elements to weave together the 3rd and 4th movements of the piece.

ear the corner of Market and High Street in West Chester, Gemelli—Artisanal Gelato & Dessert Café beckons customers with the promise of handmade gelato—and doesn’t disappoint. The gelateria, larger than one might find in Italy, welcomes guests to linger and enjoy coffee, expresso or tea with their dessert.

“Gelato is different from ice cream. It has a lower fat content and isn’t whipped with air.” Explains gelato Maestro and owner Vincenzo Tettamanti. But it is the decadent array of flavors that make this shop a must-go-to. The rotation of eighteen flavors includes the winner of last year’s Gelato World Tour People’s Choice: his exquisite Fresh Goat Cheese with handcrafted Fig Balsamic Reduction.

When asked how he creates such unique flavor combinations, he shared his inspiration on creating his beloved Blueberry Cheesecake flavor. He starts with a traditional dessert, transforms it into gelato and then gives it an Italian flare. “For example, I use mascarpone cheese instead of cream cheese and a freshly baked butter crust in place of graham crackers. Cooking down the blueberry compote creates the right texture while balancing the sweet and tart.”

He is committed to making gelato in the traditional Italian style he grew up with—which means everything made by hand from the best ingredients. Vanilla beans are scraped from pods to enhance flavor, fresh mint is used in the mint chocolate chip, nut butters are all made in-house from nuts, and the grass-fed, organic dairy products come from local farms.

“We have vegan flavors,” Vincenzo says, “but really good ones.” He explains how he worked on the recipe for his Chocolate Peanut Butter until the flavor, texture and creaminess met his very high bar.

This all adds up to incredible taste. Vincenzo is happy to share his knowledge, hosting classes on Thursday evenings to teach his artisanal process. He and his business partner and wife Julianne also have a private room for 16 that is available for private parties.

Desserts and gelatos can be eaten on the premises or taken to go. Come in soon to end your meals on the right note—light, sweet and flavorful.

Art Connects at the Heart of Kennett Square

K

ennett Square is known for its supportive artistic community of working artists, art teachers, galleries and art events throughout the year. Several popular artists have their art studios in the historic center, including Carol Lesher, Peter Willard, Neilson Carlin and the nationally acclaimed contemporary realist painter Robert Jackson.

Neilson Carlin also owns and directs the Carlin Academy of Fine Art which teaches the atelier method of realism painting. The Carlin Academy has spurred dozens of successful professional painters who all stay in Kennett Square to also paint and teach, including Tracey Rothenberger, Karen D’Allaird, who now paints and teaches students 6-12th grade at her Willowdale Art Academy in Kennett Square, and Corien Siepelinga, who paints, owns and manages the beautiful Square Pear Gallery, and teaches art to student K-5. Every

artistic part of Kennett Square is tied together, in an incredibly encouraging, and positive creative loop.

“First Friday Art Stroll” in Kennett Square kicks off every new month’s art show openings with a festive, fun atmosphere, where shops are open late with pop up art events, food, music and drinks. “Evening of the Arts” is a special June First Friday in Kennett Square, with a large curated art show of 22 local artists at the Genesis Healthcare building, and pop up art spaces throughout the town and in private homes.

Kennett is also home to the Kennett Symphony, which is a world class symphony conducted by Michael Hall, The Kennett Flash, which is a terrific contemporary concert venue, the Longwood Performing Arts for dance instruction and Carousel Performing Arts Center which teaches classes in music, dance and theater. The Garage Youth Center offers year-round classes provided free by Chester County Art Association, and there is an annual Student Art Show with 9 participating school districts that draws over a thousand people every year. Local stores and restaurants, like Philter Coffee, The Kennett Creamery and Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery, all have constantly changing displays of artwork, art exhibitions and events to engage and encourage creativity. In Kennett Square, the arts are alive and thriving in every part of the town.

The Kennett Brewfest

T

his October 13th will be the twenty-first anniversary of this Kennett Square tradition. Begun as a tent at the Mushroom Festival, by its fourth year it had grown so popular that it opened as a stand-alone event. This annual fundraiser for Historic Kennett Square now boasts a crowd of 4,000 craft beer enthusiasts.

The four-hour event will feature over 100 breweries offering 2-ounce tastings for a $50 entrance fee. Local breweries like Victory and Levante will be on hand along with more national craft beer makers like Dogfish and Stone Brewing.

Guests come year after year to sample old favorites and discover new ones.

In addition to tasting these fine brews, the event features food trucks, merchants, and music. This year’s live music will showcase The Sin City Band and Carl Filipiak & the Jimi Jazz Band. The variety of food trucks and culinary vendors is a big draw for the festival. “We have everything from barbeque to lobster rolls. Mexican empanadas, oysters, and Korean foods are crowd favorites,” Jeffrey Norman, the events originator and annual organizer, explains.

A limited number of connoisseur tickets will be available for $85. These higher priced tickets admit guests to an exclusive tasting before the regular tasting, as well as a meal ticket for Talula’s Table. Admission to the festival is included in the purchase price.

Beer and Cheese Pairing with Levante Brewing, Birchhrun Hills Farm & The Farm at Doe Run

T

rial and error is the key to successfully pairing beer with cheese. “All that matters is your tastes and what you love. There is no right or wrong,” explains Kerry Watson, General Manager of the Bottle Room, a beer, wine, and cider café in Downingtown and the pairing guide for the evening. Levante Brewing in West Chester proved to be the ideal location to pair their craft beers with local cheeses.

Weighing in on the pairings were cheesemakers Sue Miller from Birchrun Hills Farm and The Farm at Doe Run’s, Sam Kennedy, Levante’s Brand Coordinator, Jim Adams, and The Station Taproom’s, Chef Tim Smith.

‘Fruit Fetish Vivid Berry’ was paired with ‘Birchrun Blue’. “The blue plays on the fruitiness of the craft beer, which complements and cuts through the creaminess of the blue cheese,” notes Kerry. The tart fruit ale’s cherry and blueberry flavors bring out the sweet, peppery flavors of the semi-soft blue.

The right cheese to pair with Birra Di Levante, a Bohemian-style Pilsner, whose touch of malt finishes with a grassy crispness, was Doe Run’s softly creamy Hummingbird cheese. The combination brought the right level of subtlety and mellowness to the Pilsner’s lively carbonation. “It both cleanses and refreshes the palate.” Kerry shares.

“This fruity IPA,” Kerry lifts his glass of ‘Glitter Parts (Pineapple)’, “makes this the right match for the roasted bitter notes of the cheese.” He is referring to Birchrun Hills’ ‘Tomme Mole’—the decadently flavored aged cheese finished with a cocoa, coffee, cayenne and cinnamon rub, evocative of a mole sauce, which found its perfect partner with the honey-sweet hops of this brew.

“I didn’t expect that combination,” Kerry says. But that is what he loves best about the pairings, “you learn something

new every time.” The next pairing was The Prairie Fire Rye IPA, whose caramel sweetness balanced the sharpness of Doe Run Farm’s St. Malachi cheese.

Chocolate and Beer pairing with Philter Coffee and Kennett Brewing Company

T

o Chris Thompson, owner of Philter Coffee in Kennett Square, chocolate is the perfect companion to a great cup of coffee. An early supporter of the American bean-to-bar movement, Thompson has been showcasing the diversity of chocolate flavors through a selection of single origin bars available at the specialty coffee shop.

Too late for coffee? Try craft beer instead. “Beer has milder flavors than wine, which makes it much easier to pair with food,” comments Mark Osborne, co-owner of the neighboring Kennett Brewing Company. Together with Thompson, they came up with pairings which will prove to you that, sometimes, the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

Start with the light Heady Danker, a sour brew whose lemon notes complement the tart raspberries of Dick Taylor’s Vanilla Raspberry bar. Enjoyed together, they’re reminiscent of a festive summer dessert. Next, try the Jammy Bastard Pale, Written by Estelle Tracy Photography by Natalie Radbill

which Thompson claims “tastes like the kids are in bed,” along with the bright citrus notes of Woodblock Chocolate’s 70% Madagascar.

The Kennett Pride, a “beery,” “awesomely drinkable” brew will be the partner of choice of a quality milk chocolate, such as Potomac Chocolate’s creamy 65% Peruvian Dark Milk. Who knew milk chocolate could go with beer?

Contrary to popular belief, IPAs can work surprisingly well with chocolate. Take the Passion of the Thrice, for instance, whose slightly bitter, fragrant grapefruit notes play beautifully against the nutty and woody ones of Ritual Chocolate’s 75% Mexico bar.

With their coffee and cacao undertones, stouts and porters are obvious companions to chocolate: end your flavor journey with the Ploughman Porter, which tames the intense fruitiness of Ranger Chocolate’s Chulucanas bar. Despite its 80% cacao content, the single origin bar is surprisingly sweet, with notes reminiscent of “Raisinets,” as Chris puts it. Interestingly, the pairing brings out a smokiness toward the finish.

Plan a visit to Kennett Square today to experience these fine chocolate and beer duos. Pick the recommended bars at Philter Coffee, then head to Kennett Brewing Company, a mere couple of blocks down the street, and prepare to be wowed.

he Gables at Chadds Ford, a restaurant situated in bucolic Brandywine Valley, is a restaurant with something for everyone. Love to dine al fresco? Enjoy dinner on the patio surrounded by lush plantings. Or pull up an Adirondak chair and sip a beverage around a blazing fire pit at happy hour. Serving brunch, lunch, and dinner, The Gables fare is an irresistible mix of European inspired cuisine complemented with New American flavors and a dollop of Southern flair.

Steeped in charm, The Gables is a picture-perfect spot to host an elegant wedding, or a special dinner, shower, birthday party, or business event. Intimate and romantic, the Wedding Terrace is ideal for an outdoor ceremony or reception. Lovely landscaped grounds, a fountain, and other architectural elements create an enchanted garden ambiance. In the event of inclement weather, the Wedding Terrace can be tented or the event can move into the beautiful barn space.

The spacious 1800s bank barn is fully renovated. A wall of French windows, soaring beamed ceilings, and an antique chandelier form a blank slate for any decorating option.

The barn housed a dairy farm and a country store before becoming a restaurant. Whether enjoying a meal or hosting an event, the venue’s warmth and character make guests feel welcome. And the photo ops are amazing!

But a restaurant is all about the food and chef/owner Ann Kolenick doesn’t disappoint. She and her team design à la carte event menus around clients’ specifications, palate, and budget. Most recipes can be tweaked to accommodate dietary restrictions. Shrimp and Grits, a nod to her mother’s southern heritage, and Ann’s award-winning Chocolate Banana Cake and Chocolate Espresso Cake are restaurant and event favorites.

The Gables hosts about 150 weddings, showers, and business functions per year. Knowledgeable event coordinators guide clients through the planning process and assure everything runs smoothly on the big day. Peak season at The Gables runs from May through November, and short-term bookings are available. A great tip to keep in mind: events held on weekdays benefit from lower venue fees.

Customized menus may include signature dishes like Charred Spanish Octopus flavored with chili oil, preserved lemon, and smoked pimento aioli; or short rib toast with farmhouse cheddar and horseradish. Other menu items change seasonally to showcase the freshest ingredients possible.

Autograph Brasserie has a mix of spaces to support all types of gatherings. The Lounge and Bar area is home to the collection of original record covers that run the gamut from Billie Holiday to Billy Joel. The Club Room features a private bar, fireplace, and warm sumptuous dĂŠcor featuring wood panels and velvety upholstery. The Left Wing and Right Wing dining rooms, named for the caricatures of liberal and conservative politicians that grace the walls, are perfect for intimate sit-down dinners, or can be combined to accommodate cocktail-style events. Saving Vintage on the Mainline at Eastcote Lane

S

earching for just the right eye-catching piece to add personality and spice to your home décor? Eastcote Lane at 751 W. Lancaster Avenue in Devon is the place to go. Proprietor Teresa Decker’s captivating shop is a furniture renovation workshop, studio, retail space, and art gallery in one.

With her friend Jeanne Joseph, Decker showcases a creatively curated mix of accessories, artwork, and gifts. “We have invited some of our favorite artists to join us at the shop,” she said. Her hand-painted vintage furniture is nestled among works by fellow artists including hand-blown glass, original paintings, ceramics, textiles, candles, and more.

Eastcote Lane is named for a street in England where Decker lived as a child. She takes inspiration from her childhood, and time spent travelling has nurtured her fondness for unique pieces, unusual antiques, and the contribution that original art makes in a space.

With a knowledge of European finishes and different styles of paint, Decker is able to channel that fondness into a unique style of furniture refinishing.

Decker now kicks things up a notch with a whimsical sense of style. Decoupage an elephant print onto the side of a dresser, why not? Paint a Union Jack across the front of a dresser, but of course! Using paint, brushes, skill and vision, Decker transforms humdrum looking vintage pieces into show-stopping chests, dressers, armoires, and more. Her process breathes new life into hand-me-down furniture.

Eastcote Lane opened in Devon five years ago, followed by co-op spaces at The West End Garage in Cape May and worKS Kennett Square. The Devon store houses Teresa’s workshop. “You will find me with an apron on and paintbrush in hand,” she said. She does custom work, and offers classes so others can learn to refurbish their own pieces. The shop stocks both Autentico Vintage and General Finishes lines of non-toxic furniture paints and finishes.

“Vintage furniture is often crafted from solid wood and is of much higher quality than much of the newer furniture widely available. I like to call this furniture rescue. With a little paint and imagination, old furniture can be transformed into stunning statement pieces,” she said.

Turning the Tables: Old Barnwood Becomes Heirloom Quality Furniture

The hefty barn boards, some three inches thick, are acquired from old barns in the region. “When someone has a barn being remodeled or already torn down, they call me.

When the demand for barnwood blew up, I was ready with an ample supply,” Braun said. The planks are stripped of old nails and kiln-dried before being transformed into heirloom quality tables or other furnishings that instantly become the focal point of any home.

E. Braun is known for building the kind of farm tables that become a gathering place for family meals, kids’ schoolwork, game night, or catching up with friends. The beauty, warmth, and character of antique barnwood conjure a

feeling of timelessness, hospitality, and comfort. Memories are made around the family table.

Creating Beautiful Spaces

A

ttention to detail requires a perceptive thoughtfulness, a quality that runs deep in the design team of AK Interiors located in downtown Lancaster. They understand that an everyday storage space can gift you 5 extra minutes or rob you of 20 if not laid out properly. AK designers know that a laundry room isn’t just a folding space but a think space, and that an island needs enough room to make daily feasts and give homework help. They possess a keen awareness that style and elegance do not have to be sacrificed for functionality. When a School Lane Hills family of four needed to give their home a refresh they sought out the services of Alison McIndoe, founder and principal of AK Interiors knowing that she could bring beauty and function together, to create a timeless design that would reflect their unique personality.

The frustration with their current space was the restrictiveness of isolated rooms, which was intensified by the outdated and dull complexion of the walls and cabinetry.

The solution was to design an open centralized kitchen that would create a smooth flow from one room to the next. So, the wall separating the laundry room and breakfast nook was torn down and converted into a kitchen. A half bath was removed and transformed into a pantry for more storage space,

which also allowed access to the family room. A wet bar was constructed leading the way to an arched opening which seamlessly transitions into the dining room. In collaboration with other trades, the space was brought together by combining the mud and laundry room with a powder room tucked into it’s corridor.

They breathed life into the structure by creating an airy atmosphere with a neutral palette. The simplicity of it’s clean lines and sleek hardware is kept interesting with the details of a herringbone patterned brick floor and a custom paneled vent hood. The coordinating elements of seeded glass in the pendant light fixtures in the kitchen and flush mounts in the

hallways paired with mixed metals of polished nickel and antique burnished brass with glass beads elevate the space to classic perfection. The traditional details of crown moulding, corbels, paneled cabinetry, and rounded edges add a warmth to this family’s minimalist approach to life and design.

It is the belief that interiors are about the people who inhabit them which guides Alison’s thoughtfulness and allows for an acute attention to detail to create a timeless design and a beautiful space.

Makes Scents: Artisanal Candles and Natural Apothecary From Zoet Bathlatier

Z

oet Bathlatier is a home fragrance and skin care line made in Malvern, and sold by specialty retailers across the country. Ilka Evans, the maker behind the Zoet brand, creates wonderful smelling, clean-burning candles scented with essential oils and premium fragrance oils. She also makes a line of natural skin-care products. Zoet (sounds like ‘zoot’) is a Dutch word meaning sweet, soft, gentle or fresh. Bathlatier is a maker or seller of bath and body care.

From a young age, Ilka was drawn to natural ingredients, scents, and aromas.

Her grandmother made herb-based healing remedies using botanicals that grew wild around her home in the Low Country of South Carolina. This may have inspired Ilka’s interest in studying the plants, oils, and herbs used in natural apothecary.

Zoet Bathlatier candles are 100% vegetable wax, soybased and blended with botanical oils. Infused with essential oils and premium fragrances, the aromatic candles are poured by hand in small batches and tested for even burning and fragrance output. Cotton and wood wicks are lead-free.

Ilka, a graphic artist, designed the attractive labels and packaging. The candles’ glass vessels enhance any home décor style, perfect for gift giving.

The apothecary line includes fragrant and luxurious body scrubs, hair and body oil, body balms, hydrating butters, cleansing grains, and more. Ingredients are all natural, free from harsh chemical preservatives, parabens, phthalates, sulfates and artificial colors. Apothecary products are made by hand in small batches using natural botanical oils, herbs, flowers, clays, nut oils, and seed oils.

Ilka’s creations reflect her love of nature and travel. “My candle scents are inspired by the seasons, and by journeys I’ve taken. I want to convey that spirit. Our end desire is to provide customers with a sense of renewal and wellbeing,” she said.

Ceramics Inspired by an Imperfectly Beautiful World

M

eghan Bergman’s ceramics are a feast for the eye. Inventive and innovative, her handcrafted pottery and ceramic sculptures are inspired by the world around us. “I love things in nature,” Meghan gestures to an array of mugs lined up in her Kennett Square studio. The unique textures lift the mugs from everyday items to works of art.

“For me, creating these pieces by hand is a meditative process.” An art teacher by day, Meghan teaches at both Greenwood Elementary and Chester County Art Association. Her own passionate work is often done at night after her two young children are in bed.

She brings art to everyday functional items like bowls, plates and mugs. Each one is a study in beauty and begs a closer look. Her popular tea sets, a teapot with tea cups, are a prime example of the Japanese influence on her work.

“It’s called ‘wabi-sabi’ which means perfectly imperfect,” Meghan explains.

Wabi-sabi is an appreciation of the beauty found within nature’s cycles of growth through decay. It celebrates the frayed edges of life as both glorious and melancholy. Meghan interprets this by creating works that have a story, that harken to the past.

Her adherence to this aesthetic is evident in the “crunchy” nature of her work and finds its fullest expression in her sculptures. Evoking the mysteries found under the sea, barnacles are a recurrent theme of her sculptures. “I’m passionate about treasures from the sea,” she says as she displays actual barnacles that inspire her.

Every barnacle on these clay sculptures is formed and pinched by hand. Most of the sculptures are standalone pieces, but she’s made several lamps for commissions.

Meghan also creates pots that make ideal planters, extending the theme of the growing barnacles into a growing plant.

Check out Meghan’s work online or visit her on one of her open studio days. The next will be on Saturday, October 6th and in addition to the opportunity to watch her work and see her artwork in person, she will offer a tasting of a local craft beer.
