I hope all of you are surviving our hot summer of 2018. Fortunately, our Texas Hill Country offers no shortage of places to cool off, especially the beautiful cypress tree-lined Guadalupe River. So, if you haven’t already done so, grab a float, kayak or rope swing and lots of sunscreen and cool off in river. While you’re at it, check out Louise Hays Park and the Kerrville River Trail. At the time this letter was written, the chamber was putting the final touches on the annual Business Expo. This year, in addition to the expo, we had our Home and Garden Show, where attendees learned about the latest and greatest home improvement ideas. As always, the chamber staff did a fantastic job of planning the event, which promised to be our best ever. We kicked off the expo Friday night with the First Friday Wine Share, which was the first opportunity to check out the expo booths, while enjoying some great beverages and socializing with fellow members. I hope all of you have taken note of our plans to enter into a joint service agreement with the Kerr Economic Development Corp. Although the chamber and KEDC will remain separate entities run by separate boards, they both will operate under the leadership of Walt Koenig. The board feels that by working closer with KEDC, the chamber can provide an even stronger and more direct voice in the direction and execution of our community’s economic development activities. As always, we encourage and appreciate your feedback, so feel free to contact me or any of the board members with comments or suggestions. I would like to congratulate City Manager Mark McDaniel, our Kerrville City Council, staff and all of the volunteers from the community who compiled and passed the Kerrville 2050 Comprehensive Plan. A big shout out also is due to Walt Koenig for his leadership and impact on the plan. Walt did a great job representing all of our interests as business people and citizens. Kerrville has a bright future indeed. That’s it from the chamber. Stay cool and enjoy your summer!

Meet the new superintendent Dr. Mark Foust was named the superintendent of Kerrville ISD Dec. 12, 2016. Prior to being named superintendent, Dr. Foust served as the chief of schools for Fort Bend ISD in Sugar Land, which was the seventh largest district in the state. Dr. Foust received his Bachelor of Arts in history from Texas A&M University and a Master of Education in administration and supervision from the University of Houston-Victoria. He earned his doctor of education degree from the University of Houston in 2014. Dr. Foust has been married to his wife, Shannon, for 19 years, and has two school-aged daughters, Chloe and Avery. 10 BusinessLink • August 2018

Cover story Education elementary schools, BT Wilson Sixth Grade School, Hal Peterson Middle School and Tivy High School. The district also prepares children to be “school ready” in the pre-K programs at the Early Childhood Center and meets students’ needs at an academic alternative high school called Hill Country High School. Because of excellent K-12 grade systems, KISD has enjoyed a 100 percent graduation rate and all campuses in the district have received the highest state accountability of “Met Standard.”
TEA Distinction Designation One recent highlight is the Texas Education Agency distinction designation for postsecondary readiness, which KISD has received for four consecutive years. KISD is one of only five districts in Texas to receive that distinction for all four years it’s been given.
Profile of a Graduate Last year, KISD introduced the Profile of a Graduate, which included six predominant attributes. According to the district, a graduating student should be ethical, goal-focused, a creative and critical thinker, collaborative and an effective communicator, possess skills for 21st-century life and have “grit.”
Instructional Standards Since 2017, there also has been significant focus on five identified KISD Instructional Standards in Education and Training. Community members can expect to see evidence of five things when they walk into any classroom in KISD. 1. Teachers fostering a positive learning environment. 2. Teachers establishing clear learning expectations. 3. Teachers ensuring authentic student engagement. 4. Teachers implementing intentional and ongoing assessment for learning. 5. Teachers utilizing time efficiently. Various community and district stakeholders were involved in the creation of the Profile of a Graduate and the identification and implementation of the KISD Instructional Standards in Education and Training. These two highly collaborative activities set the stage for KISD to become recognized as a District of Innovation by the TEA.
District of Innovation Plan Last November, the Faculty Community Advisory Committee — which included teachers, parents and community members, as well as campus and district leaders — began the work of developing an innovation plan to present to the KISD Board of Trustees and the public for consideration. The plan requests certain exemptions from the Texas Education Code that allow the district greater flexibility in instructional programming and resource management. The opportunity to be exempt from

certain regulations fosters creativity and allows for innovation in the KISD educational system. One exemption in the plan allows KISD to exempt certain TEA certification requirements to hire a teacher in subject areas where certified applicants are not readily available. This flexibility allows the district to hire a part-time industry expert to teach students in Career and Technical Education, as well as science, technology, engineering and math courses. These expanded choices lead to more opportunities for career exploration and postsecondary/workforce preparedness for the students at Tivy High School. The board of trustees approved the proposed District of Innovation Plan in February 2018.
Expanding and Seeking Partnerships In 2018, the school district will be looking for business partnerships as it expands its Health Science Technology, Cyber Security, as well as Digital Forensics and Construction Science courses. Many of these programs will lead to certification and micro-credentialing for students and
provide workforce-ready experiences. The district also will be seeking partners in the community to expand internship, field experience and cooperative learning opportunities for students in these and other innovative programs.
Facilities Planning Committees KISD also is buzzing about the culminating work of two facilities planning committees that began in November 2017 and were set to conclude with a set of recommendations to the board of trustees this past July. Visit the Community Facilities Advisory Committee’s website, kisdcfac.net, to learn more about the amazing progress that is being made to address significant facility needs in KISD schools. There is enormous energy and activity within the community supporting the continued development of KISD. This DOI plan is one of many steps the board of trustees, district leadership and many other stakeholders are taking that will foster the continued success of Kerrville’s most important resource: its children.

Teacher Bags The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Teacher Bag Campaign welcomes new teachers to the community with a gift bag of coupons or items from area businesses. For more than 10 years, the Teacher Bag Campaign has been a welcomed cooperative program between the chamber and Kerrville Independent School District.

The LKC steering committee is comprised of LKC alumni, and they commit to a three-year term to lead the selection and organization of the class.

Their first meeting was in July, and they will continue to meet at least once a month to plan the curriculum and coordinate each of the monthly classes for the nine-month program. The new LKC class No. 34 will begin in September with a welcome reception hosted by Security State Bank & Trust and a retreat at Mo-Ranch.

Houghton The July After-Hours Business Mixer was sponsored by Bank of the Hills, a division of Comerica Bank, which also celebrated its 20th anniversary of its Kerrville Branch, 1075 Junction Highway. Bank of the Hills is a staple in the Hill Country financial world. It began serving the Kerrville area in 1998. Over the years, the bank expanded and now serves customers with branches in Kerrville, Kerrville South, Ingram, Hunt and Comfort. In 2011, the bank expanded the reach and expertise as a division of Comerica Bank, enabling its customers to have full access to Comerica’s full line of products and services.
