elcome to Thibodaux and to the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce. Serving as President/ CEO, I am grateful for the hardworking board members, committee members, volunteers, ambassadors, and staff who tirelessly ensure our business programs are welcoming, fun and interconnected. You won’t find a better city than Thibodaux, a place we live, work, play, and call home. Thibodaux has been designated as one of the eight Louisiana Retirement Communities this year

by Lt. Governor Nungesser and the Louisiana Office of Tourism as well as being recognized by Reader’s Digest as the most charming city in Louisiana. The city’s scenic beauty is a hallmark of the quality of life. It is known for the strong work ethic of its citizens and a thriving business and retail base.

It’s an exciting time to be a member of the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce. We are always creating new networking and promotional opportunities to help our member businesses succeed and grow. These resources include: space to advertise in our monthly Chamber Insight Publication, business referrals, monthly relationship building opportunities, and continuing education sessions. Our committees are thriving and growing in size of 20 members, especially our Government and Public Affairs committee. They are taking initiatives and being proactive by focusing on healthcare, education, tourism, government, government concerns, and economic development in our area. By working together as Chamber members, we have a much stronger voice with our elected leaders as they contemplate policy revisions and new rules and regulations that create greater certainty and an improved environment for business in the area. We are the bridge to our future growth of business success. 2017 was a very prosperous year for the Chamber. We had wonderful growth in membership and accomplished a number of things, thanks to the many members who supported us. I am looking forward to similar results in upcoming years.

BIENVENUE Thibodaux is nicknamed “Queen City of Lafourche” and for good reason.

Located at the northern end of Lafourche Parish, the city sits atop a culturally rich land that invites its residents and visitors to explore its authentic Cajun heritage.

Cajun music jam sessions played by the award-winning Cajun Music Preservation Society can be heard on Wednesday nights at Gina’s at the Legion in historic downtown Thibodaux. Platters piled high with fried shrimp, catfish and soft-shelled crabs are house specialties at local restaurants like Politz’s, Spahr’s, and Bubba’s II Poboys. No matter where you choose to experience the culture you’re bound to meet a room full of friendly faces and enjoy the best food south of I-10.

Thought to be a quiet college town - Thibodaux is the proud home of Nicholls State University -a weekday drive along Canal Boulevard says otherwise. In recent years, North Canal Boulevard has seen steady growth as national retailers and restaurants like Academy Sports and Outdoors and Santa Fe Cattle Co. have moved into the community.

National and community banks are cashing in on the growth as well, with new and renovated branches now adding a modern architectural vibe to Thibodaux’s expanding commerce center.

Cajuns are known for being hard-working people. The residents of Thibodaux are no different. While Nicholls and Thibodaux Regional Medical Center remain the city’s largest employers in the education

Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou:

What it’s truly like?

A number of locals that comprise one dynamic Cajun population - and define the very fabric of Lafourche’s bayou community - have lived here for generations. For many natives, “up the bayou” and “down the bayou” are the only directional narratives in their vocabulary when it comes to defining literal next steps - from the drive to that next business meeting to where they’ll dine out that evening. Real Cajuns know that great food, good company, unique nature experiences and a little fais do-do are all that is needed to pass a good time. Come this fall, Bayou Lafourche’s Tourist Information Center in Raceland will unveil a new space that brings those cultural philosophies to life for both locals and visitors alike.

Through interactive exhibits designed via innovative technologies, the new Interpretive Center opening in September 2018 will give visitors an authentic taste of a Cajun “day-in-the-life.” For anyone to truly understand what it means to work, live and play as a real Cajun, Timothy Bush believes they need to experience it for themselves.

As President and CEO of the Bayou Lafourche Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Bush considers it a personal mission to ensure outsiders understand the real story of life on the bayou. The Interpretive Center will take visitors on an immersive crash course through the food, festivals, and myriad of water-based activities that create the lifeblood of this one-of-a-kind community. From virtual reality exhibits to expansive murals, anyone visiting Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou for the first time will leave inspired, hungry and ready to immerse themselves in its countless experiences.

A brand video will even be displayed in both English and French, simultaneously paying homage to bayou ancestry and helping some international guests hear the local experience in their native tongue.

Cementing its status as “The Longest Street in the World,” a mural of Lafourche Parish highlights various iconic points, from Golden Meadow to Larose to Thibodaux, offering a holistic look at the region’s notable communities.

“We want anyone who enjoys this new space, especially locals, to walk away saying, ‘Now THAT showed me the identity of Lafourche Parish,” says Bush. “Every detail and element within the Center, including the use of natural materials imperative to the Parish itself, is reflective of what you’ll find here.”

The Tourism Commission unveiled its “Cajun Bayou” campaign in 2017 with a goal of branding Lafourche Parish as a cultural destination and there’s no shortage of experiences to highlight. Thibodeauxville, for example, welcomes over 15,000 visitors a year from all over the world to Thibodaux’s historic downtown area, where food, music and a variety of art experiences abound. The iconic French Food Festival in Larose offers a deep cultural dive of similar proportions each October.

For Bush and his team, this new space is a natural extension in showcasing the ethos of Lafourche’s myriad offerings - all less than 40 miles away from New Orleans.

Danielle attended nearly all of our events from Ribbon Cutting ceremonies, luncheons, Business After Hours, assisting Chamber staff members with nametags, registration, working Thibodeauxville and selling the most duck tickets ever by an Ambassador. Her sparkling personality brings a smile wherever she goes and is always willing to go above and beyond to help others.

MR. AND MRS. LINDY HOFFMANN MUSIC’S UNSUNG HERO

Ellis LaRose Ellis has been involved with music his whole life, beginning at a very early age and participating in musicals such as Li’l Abner as Pappy Yokum and also Finnegan’s Rainbow. His love of music is evident by his constant involvement with all things musical, from member and director of several choirs. Some of his most memorable experiences included performing with the New Orleans Symphony and singing before the U.S. President in 1972 at a funeral for Senator Allen Ellender. He was also instrumental in forming a barbershop which, when then became a quartet, by the name of Tune Aces.

Even today, he continues to volunteer and is always willing to go the extra mile for musical activities.

The Wellness Center of Thibodaux Regional It’s amazing what happens when a leader of the community, surrounded by a strong team come together for the sake of one mission; one purpose – It’s empowering. That’s the best way to describe our recipient of The Business of the Year Award. As Greg Stock stated, it started with a vision many years ago and The Wellness Center at Thibodaux Regional is now one of the most prestigious facilities within the region offering opportunities to so many individuals. Healthier residents, a healthier workforce, and an overall healthier community is quite a task and they are taking it head on and we’re so excited to see what the future will bring as growth continues.

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL AWARD

Lance Ledet Lancescaping, LLC

Lance is a very caring and compassionate individual who loves working his magic inside and outside, serving the people of Thibodaux and neighboring areas. His creative touches have certainly helped improved some of the chamber’s events and more. He is dedicated to his work as well as to the chamber in representing us at many functions. Community driven, he loves connecting with other business members and establishing relationships. In fact, his networking abilities have also encouraged others to join the chamber. He enjoys travelling and doing special things for people.

Neal Swanner Bubba’s II Poboys

Neal has been the “keeper” of the Norman Swanner Foundation by helping a countless number of citizens, including many of our teenager of the year recipients and other scholarship winners. He is truly a leader in the community and dedicated to making Thibodaux and Lafourche Parish a great place to live.

His vision of a dog park now allows Thibodaux to have the #4 ranked dog park in the state of Louisiana. He is truly a community servant dedicated to making the place we all call home the best it can be.

TEENAGER OF THE YEAR

Ethan Naquin While this young man is a senior at ED White, he is known to the community through his many hours of service to Hope for Animals, St. Francis Community Garden, Terrebonne Place, St. James Parish Hospital and Second Harvest Food Bank. Musically talented, he has also tutored over 100 young musicians in alto saxophone in how to play rhythms and notes through St. Joseph and St. Genevieve Catholic Elementary schools. This future leader of our community is scheduled to perform with the International Honors Band Ensemble, Alto Saxophone at Carnegie Hall in New York on Feb. 18 and also at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia in July of this year.

Each year, the Chair of the Board is given the privilege to award someone with the Chairman’s Award for whichever merits or reasons the Chair sees fit. This year, this award was presented to Donna Gravois who is wholeheartedly eager and selfless when it comes to promoting the Chamber of Commerce or giving back to our community. She is a leader of her generation and serves as a great coach and mentor to all whom she comes in contact with. Consumed with enthusiasm, dedication, and support to the community are very little examples to describe the many hours she has poured into countless organizations and causes.

Through her employer, she has recently been selected to participate in a monthly women’s development program in Orlando, Florida, and I undoubtedly know why.

It’s because she is a passionate leader. She was instrumental in helping with launching our Diversity and Inclusion program this past year and will also be leading our Organizational Affairs committee for 2018. Additionally, she is a loving wife and mother who happens to make time for all of these things to work and happen.

For the HerbaLife distributor, establishing a “one-stop nutrition spot” in Thibodaux’s downtown corridor six years ago meant a focus on quality, exceptional service and customers’ goals. “Your health is your greatest wealth, and we are grateful to share the gift of great nutrition with the community we love,” notes Towns. “We love to witness the entire transformation process of others; mentally, physically and spiritually.”

As the community continues to seek varied food and fitness options to elevate their lifestyles, locally owned businesses thrive; Towns’ second location, Downtown Nutrition, opens on West 3rd Street in August 2018. There’s also Fit Kitchen Meals, offering prepared dishes for every lifestyle, daypart and goal. Those looking to build muscle have access to “bulk bowls,” while someone focused on weight loss may benefit from the company’s “trim” meals and snacks. The meal planning service also caters to those focused on current health trends, such as the Paleo and Keto diets.

Of course, traditional Louisiana fare packed with breads, carb-heavy fixings and deep fried seafoods are not renowned for their health benefits. HEALTHe Cafe, located within eLearning Academy’s campus on Acadia Road, offers sandwiches, wraps and smoothies to help locals avoid the temptation without sacrificing taste and flavor. Daily specials and soups packed with fresh ingredients trade heavy cream-laden bases for vegetables, meaning nutritious offerings offset the occasional Cajun splurge. Rouses Supermarket is also committed to keeping Thibodaux on track with complimentary shopping tours led by a dietitian. Groups of up to 15 shoppers are educated on making healthful choices within every aisle - from picking produce to healthy proteins such as seafood and meats, along with tips to incorporating more fruits and vegetables, choosing the right sweeteners and more.

Specialized gyms like Momentum Crossfit on Canal Boulevard also compliment the expansive Thibodaux Regional Wellness Center, comprising over 200,000 square feet of multi-use classrooms, aquatic facilities and medical offices. On a micro-level, local circles such as the Thibodaux Running Group meet regularly to encourage and support one another on their wellness journeys.

ON THE RISE In the past few years, Thibodaux’s retail scene has enjoyed unprecedented growth. Clothing boutiques, large-scale-yet-niche outposts such as Academy Sports + Outdoors and a handful of innovative restaurants have emerged, offering shoppers a range of specialized stores to explore.

The newest section of North Canal Boulevard is primed for continual upgrades, with a number of well-planned, open-air shopping plazas joining the scene. Craving frozen yogurt or a strong cup of coffee as you pace an afternoon of errands? Orange Leaf or CC’s Coffee House on Acadia Road have you covered. Those who have long enjoyed the tastes of well-known chains like Jimmy John’s can now get their fix right off Bayou Road, while barbecue fans can find such flavors via Big Mike’s BBQ on Laura Drive. Small business owners like Mike Lewis of Big Mike’s recognize the appeal of expanding their success to the downtown Thibodaux corridor - solidifying the area as a true shopping district.

“Veteran” Thibodaux retailers such as Terry Percle of Queeny’s Boutique on West 4th Street have watched this growth firsthand over the years. As a longtime resident of New Orleans, Percle saw immense opportunity - along with mounds of charm and appeal - in the business development opportunities of downtown Thibodaux.

“I could have easily continued a fruitful career in the City,” notes Percle, “but there is something so special and unique about becoming ingrained in a community like Thibodaux. The people, the buildings and the success we’ve experienced speak for themselves. I can’t imagine living and working anywhere else.”
