Whew - the summer flew by! I can count on one hand how many summers I have left with my youngest at home. One. Hand. Not cool. Not cool at all. We have had a great summer mixing in a few old traditions and a few new memories. As the years go by we outgrow activities that define our summers and grow into a family that makes our heart swell and ache at the same time. So, as we start a new school year, remember that this year will disappear faster than the grains of sand in an hourglass. Be present. Southeast Texas Family Magazine

From SmokeyBear.com As crews battled to contain a blaze in the Capitan Mauntains of New Mexico in 1950, they received a report of a lone bear cub seen wandering near the fire line. They hoped that the mother bear would return for him. Soon, about 30 of the firefighters were caught directly in the path of the fire storm. They survived by lying face down on a rockslide for over an hour as the fire burned past them. Nearby, the cub took refuge in a tree that became completely charred. He escaped with his life but was badly burned on his paws and hind legs. The crew removed the cub from the tree, and a rancher among the crew agreed to take him home. A New Mexico Department of Game and Fish ranger heard about the cub when 6

SETXAdvertising@gmail.com

he returned to the fire camp. He drove to the rancher’s home to help get the cub on a plane to Santa Fe, where his burns were treated and bandaged. News about the little bear spread swiftly throughout New Mexico. Soon, the United Press and Associated Press broadcast his story nationwide, and many people wrote and called, asking about the cub’s recovery. The state game warden wrote to the chief of the Forest Service, offering to present the cub to the agency as long as the cub would be dedicated to a conservation and wildfire prevention publicity program. The cub was soon on his way to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., becoming the living symbol of Smokey Bear. Smokey received numerous gifts of honey and so many letters he had to have his own zip code. He remained at the zoo until his death in 1976, when he was returned to his home to be buried at the Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, New Mexico, where he continues to be a wildfire prevention legend. In 1952, Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins wrote the popular anthem that would launch a continuous debate about Smokey’s name. To maintain the rhythm of the song, they added “the” between “Smokey” and “Bear.” Due to the song’s popularity, Smokey Bear has been called “Smokey the Bear” by many adoring fans, but, in actuality, his name never changed. He’s still Smokey Bear. Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

Joe Dougharty

Name: Joe Dougharty Spouse: Laura Dougharty Children’s names and ages: Dessie 22, Daniel 14, Josiah 14, Cadence 10, Jonah 8, and grandson William 15 months

Can you sum up your parenting philosophy? In the words of Proverbs 22:6 (NASB) “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” I believe as parents this tells us we have to prepare our children for the real world. We have to teach them the truths they should embrace and also show them the things they should avoid. Too many times I think we over shelter our children from the “bad” things in life and then when they are exposed to it they don’t know how to respond. We need to prepare them for every aspect of life, even if it 8

makes us as the parents uncomfortable. To sum up my parenting philosophy, as parents we must invest in our children and prepare them for the world that awaits them. What is a favorite memory from when your children were young? I can’t say I have one favorite memory of when my children were young. There have been many fond memories along the way. Each child has times that will forever be a precious memory and each in different ways. One of my favorite memories was when I became a father. The excitement of seeing the baby for the first time and getting to hold them. The flood of emotions and the reality of what your new job now consists of. Tell us about a favorite vacation with your kids. Just last year we took all 5 kids and our grandson to the beach for Spring Break. We rented a beautiful cabin on Crystal Beach for the week. Our grandson William was just a few weeks old. It was the first family vacation where all of us were together. It was a great time of bonding as a family and also one of testing our patience with one another. The weather wasn’t favorable and we ended up having to buy jackets for everyone because we weren’t prepared for freezing temperatures. All in all it was a great vacation. How do you manage your schedule to ensure quality time with www.SETXFamily.com

your family? Honestly this is a great struggle. I wish I could say I have this mastered and I spend tons of quality time with my family but I often fail miserable at this one. Sometimes I have too many “projects” going that I miss out on things. My wife Laura tries to keep me balanced and helps greatly with my time management as it pertains to family time. What advice do you have for new parents? Invest in your family!Inv est in the relationship you have with your wife. Make it a number one priority to spend time with her and connect on every level. Your children need to see how important she is to you. Then invest in your

children. You have to do this collectively and individually. Each of your children are different and the way to connect with them is different. So you must invest in them on their own level. This is a daunting task but one I’ve learned must be done for your family to be all it’s meant to be. Do your children attend public school, private school, or does your family homeschool? Our children attend public school. What forms of discipline have been successful with your children? Each one of them responds in different ways to different forms of discipline. Spanking works on some, grounding works on others and time out works even better on the rest. So there is no one form of discipline that works best for our children. Over the years we have learned what works best for each one. What is your favorite activity to share with your child? I love to see the excitement on their faces when we talk about church camp. We recently spent a weekend volunteering at camp and the kids loved that we did it as a family. I’ll admit I was reluctant to go but it was great working on different projects as a family with other families at the camp. What’s the funniest thing your child has ever said? A couple years 10

SETXAdvertising@gmail.com

ago we were eating dinner and having a conversation with the kids. We were asking them what they wanted to be when they grew up. I told them we may not become what we hope to be when we grow up but it’s good to have an idea of what you want to be. We went around the table and when we got to the youngest (Jonah), he said he wanted to be an alcoholic when he grew up because it looked fun. We then had to explain what that meant. Do you cook? Yes, I cook often. Do you clean house? Honestly, I prefer not to and normally only do when my wife insists on help from the whole family. Do you do laundry? I wash my clothes because I throw everything in the washer at the same time. My wife doesn’t like me doing everyone else’s laundry because I don’t sort it out by color and then I throw it all in the dryer without taking out delicates. Have you served as Your child’s sports team coach or leadership role in another children’s team activity? Do you recommend coaching your children? Yes, I have helped coach. I have helped coach Josiah’s tball team, a couple different baseball teams and Josiah and Daniel in their last year of little league baseball. Helping coach can be a fun time, but it can also be a difficult Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

time. We want to expect more from our children and sometimes we are harder on them than we should be, and it causes undue pressure on them. We help every year in Vacation Bible School and we try to find mission projects and volunteer opportunities for them throughout the year. Let’s talk about holidays! How does your family celebrate children’s birthdays? It varies from year to year. We have done combined parties, sleepovers, parties at putt putt or jump world. It is something different every year. What Easter traditions do you have? We like to attend an Easter Sunrise Service and stay for the regular service then enjoy the afternoon with family. Does your family dye your own Easter eggs? Yes we do! What kind of candy do your children like to find in their Easter eggs? Any they can eat! Do you put anything in the eggs besides candy? Normally we do not,

but we have placed money in the eggs hid in the yard during a family hunt. Does your family do Halloween? Yes, but normally at church events like a Trunk or Treat. Occasionally, we will take them to neighborhoods to walk around. Thanksgiving Turkey-Fried, Oven Roasted, or Smoked? Normally end up with some of all 3! What is your family’s Christmas tradition? We have flexibility in our Christmas season as every other year we don’t do Christmas on Christmas day. It all depends on what year it is and if the children are with us on that day. The children leave out milk and cookies for Santa every year. What other parenting memories or thoughts would you like to share with our readers? Always cherish and value family time. Life is short and we don’t have forever to spend and invest in our loved ones. Love each one and make sure you tell them often and show them constantly!

A Special Kind of Love

Raising a Special Needs Child

by Mehgan Drake

I was absolutely terrified. Flash forward to today, and everything I was Raising children is always worth scared of is just our normal now. it. But let’s face it—parenting is I’ve learned countess lessons over hard. Being a special needs parent these years: patience, unconditional takes that up a level. We are often tired, lonely, and battling things you could hardly fathom. I purposefully entered the world of special needs parenting nearly five years ago with the adoption of our son, Boden, who has Down Syndrome and lowfunctioning autism. When I met him, I’ll admit I wasn’t just daunted,

love, and my own personal shortcomings to name a few. However, the thing that stands out the most to me is how lonely this road of special needs parenting actually is. We understand and accept that we are different and a minority. As a whole, people with developmental or neurological differences and those with physical malformations or limitations are not seen as much as typical people in every day society, leading to a lack of understanding and education in public settings, and this is what I want to address. As such a parent let me just say-please do not teach your kids not to stare at people with differences. Teach them to say hello. By teaching your children to look away, you are essentially perpetuating a standard of unacceptance, and making a whole people group to live a life ignored. I get that seeing physical deformities and hearing strange, autistic noises can be unnerving and intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. The more you learn, the more

comfortable you will be in these social situations. The old adage of people being afraid of what they don’t understand is totally true and applicable in this scenario. Our children, however, are more alike than different. Boden is capable of a full range of emotions and behaviors, encompassing everything from joy and teasing, to anger and mischief. It should be said here that you should not feel obligated to

dismiss or condone behaviors that our children are exhibiting towards you. They are also able to have expectations. Giving grace is nice, but you do not have to tell us “It’s OK” if we correct or reprimand our child for doing something they know they shouldn’t be doing. For instance, my son will sit in anyone’s lap or pinch someone every once in a while. That’s not alright. It wouldn’t be ok for a typical child to do that. He knows better, and I will fuss at him for it. Boden make noises, he does not speak, but he understands when we speak to him, and he loves to play. Many people with physical limitations are neurologically fully functional, and would love to be acknowledged. It is not only possible, but so much fun to interact and play with these special children. While appropriate boundaries are always a must, hand-shakes, high-fives, and conversation are always welcomed. You may not know correct terminology, or exactly what the politically

correct thing to say is, but I assure you, families with special children would love to answer appropriate questions (please keep in mind we are all humans, made in the image of God, with dignity and some things are personal), educate you on conditions, and even brag or tell funny stories about our kiddos. Feel free to say “I noticed your beautiful family and wanted to say hello,” or, “You’re rocking it today, Mama,” or how about, “Is there anything I can help you with while I’m here?”. Introduce your child, and encourage them to say hi. As a conversation ensues, and you get to know these people, you get the chance to learn

about individual personalities and diagnoses, and each time, things are becoming more normalized to you and your children. Encourage a family walking this road. Learn more about a diagnosis a family at school or church is living with. Don’t miss a golden opportunity to get to know some amazing humans, and the chance for your kid to establish wonderful friendships. Don’t look away. Don’t be afraid. Give a great big smile and “hello” to help foster understanding, acceptance, and friendship from which all walks of life and generations can benefit.
