Breckenridge - A City Rich in History

F

rom the harsh frontier days, through the drought of 1886, to the oil boom era and into the 21st century, Breckenridge has thrived, survived and settled in as a unique small town situated in the middle of Stephens County.

Officially, organized in 1876, along with the county, the town was originally named in honor of John Cabell Breckinridge, the 14th vice president of the U.S. and a Confederate general during the Civil War. In 1880, the town's name was changed to what it is today, “Breckenridge.�

Home to about 5,545 residents in 2014, Breckenridge grew in population to, by some accounts, more than 40,000, during the

oil boom years from 1918 through the mid-1920s.

Although area oil production died down over the years, Breckenridge continues to be home to many oil-related businesses.

Additionally,manyBreckenridgeandStephensCounty residence continue to be involved in ranching, raising cattle,sheepandgoatsontherockylandscapeofnorthcentral Texas.

A

re you proud to be an American?” That question has been asked by the media recently to college students, millennials, and others around the country.

Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) a large majority of students and millennials answered no. It makes you wonder what they are being taught in school these days, and the media seems to be piling on as well. With all that as a background, I saw a message on Facebook yesterday that said “I wish all Americans were as proud of America as Texans are of Texas.”

That’s a good statement, and if you are a West Texan, you probably bleed red, white, and blue. I love West Texas, I love Breckenridge, and I love America. Granted I am of the older generation, I have served in the military, and I have traveled to other countries,

but the most important thing is that, given good information, I can think for myself and draw my own conclusions.

And I have concluded that Breckenridge, Texas, USA is a great place to live and work and raise a family. The people in this community have values similar to mine; they work hard, they go to church, they are involved in their schools and kids activities, they are friendly, they love their families, and they are quick to help others when they need help. Do we have any problems?

Sure we do, but if we follow the Reverend John Wesley Ford’s advice and “…start to handle them cheerfully and with good judgement as opportunities rather than irritations, we would find ourselves getting ahead at a surprising rate for it is a fact that there are plenty of big jobs waiting for men who aren’t afraid of the

Part of my job (and yours) is to inspire others around us. I take pride in my community, I want others to do the same.

Tim Seymore BISD Superintendent we plan to develop a teacher leader development program, to identify what makes up true, authentic learning, and then recognize those teachers that model it. We have realigned our staff to allow for better supports for the socio-emotional needs of both students and teachers by adding a staff member at the elementary and secondary levels dedicated to helping teachers succeed. Also, reducing the administrative burden on counselors and principals by reassigning some of those duties to other personnel will allow us to better meet the needs of our kids and to foster the deeper relationships necessary to identify why kids are struggling, emotionally, mentally, and academically.

ver the past two years, I have been involved in the Texas Association of School Administrator’s Future Ready Superintendents Leadership Network. During this time, I have been exposed to some great ideas and experiments in school transformation. Just as importantly, each time we meet, I am away from the district, and I have time to reflect on our district. Over the past few months, I have been mulling over this over in my head.

I cannot keep it there any longer.

1. I find it interesting that so many schools don’t put learning first.

2. Instead, they start with the state mandates, standardized tests, parent expectations, traditions, etc, and then try to figure out how they can fit learning into the process of meeting those expectations.

3. What if instead, we started with our beliefs about what students need to learn, and how students learn most powerfully and deeply, and then tried to figure out how to fit those tests, mandates, expectations, traditions, etc, into the process of reaching THAT goal?

4. Of course that would require that we be clear about what we mean when we say learning, that we have some coherent, commu-

nity-wide understanding of what we believe kids need to learn, of what learning is, and how learning happens. It would require that our mission would be centered around developing and nourishing engaged and literate learners who can navigate the world in innovative and impactful ways. It would require that we redefine “success.”

5. Schools and the community they exist in are dependent upon each other. One does not excel without the other. One does not fail without the other.

As a result, our school board and administration have committed to a plan that is centered around this one ideal: Create a place where the vast majority of students and staff wake up every single morning inspired to go to school, feel safe when they are there, and return home at the end of the day fulfilled by the work they are doing. (Adapted from Simon Sinek’s Start with Why) Working with community, business, staff, parents, and students, we want to go back and determine why we have Breckenridge Schools. We want to determine the qualities, attributes, behaviors, skill sets, etc we want our kids to possess, and then, ensure that everything we do at BISD is leading up to that end goal. In addition,

Breckenridge F ine Arts Center The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center has been a source of community pride since 1985. The facility is located at 207 N. Breckenridge Ave. (U.S. Hwy. 183 North), about two blocks north of the town’s main intersection of highways 183 and 180.

The BFAC is committed to furthering an artistic environment through education, focusing on two main objectives: to establish and maintain the finest in workshop facilities and instruction, and to provide high quality exhibits for the general public.

It houses three permanent collections: • The Kathyrn Leach Doll Collection made up of more than 750 dolls from all over the world.

• “All That Glitters” Texas Festival Gowns Collection featuring more than 25 dresses from the Corpus Christi Buccaneer Days, Fiesta San Antonio and the Tyler Rose Festival.

• A Bronze Sculpture Gallery from the

estate of Lester and Virginia Clark, founders of the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center.

The BFAC also includes two rotating galleries for combined and solo shows: • The combined Main and East Galleries hosts an annual Juried Art Show every August that represents national and international artists, with more than 125 sculptures and paintings. The two galleries can also operate independently for separate art shows running simultaneously.

• A large workshop area with floor to ceiling windows and an area for sculpting. Area and nationally known instructors conduct a variety of art workshops all year, using BFAC easels, tables and pottery wheels.

• A computerized kiln for pottery and a glass kiln for fusing glass.

• A fully equipped kitchen for receptions, special meetings and workshop use.

The center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday & 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, Saturday.

Breckenridge Senior Citizens Center ered to your home, a doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s note is required explaining their homebound situation.

The center offers a place for seniors to meet and socialize.

At least three tables of domino players meet every weekday and once a month, a group of women meet to play cards and eat lunch.

The center also offers Bingo on

Thursdays.

Different medical groups in the community offer blood pressure checks once a month.

For more than 34 years, the Breckenridge Senior Citizens Center has been serving the needs of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over-60 population.

The center, located at 210 N. Smith St. is a Council on Aging agency operated by the city of Breckenridge. It receives county and state funding as well The new Director of the center is Cheryle VanMeter.

The center is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The center is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

The center serves lunch three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), starting at 11 a.m., to area residents who are age 60 or older. The suggested price for the meals is $2.50 for 60 and older and $3.50 for those under 60, which may be adjusted in the near future.

Volunteers deliver meals to the 60 and older citizens who are no longer able to prepare their own meals, which is the Meals-onWheels program.

T he Breckenridge American More than 90 years ago, the Breckenridge American was established, and it remains the only newspaper in Stephens County today.

In March of 2016, Graham Newspapers Inc., including the Breckenridge American, was acquired by Palo Pinto Communications, LP. Its principal, Jim Moser, is also the owner of Moser Community Media in Brenham, which focuses on the management of small to mid-sized community newspapers in Texas.

The purchase also includes The Graham Leader and Jacksboro Herald-Gazette, as well as other publications once produced by GNI. Prior to that, MediaNews Group of Denver, Colo., had purchased the Breckenridge American and radio stations KLXK-FM and KROO-AM and added them to the company’s wholly owned division, Graham Newspapers, Inc. MediaNews Group purchased the newspaper from Elaine and Virgil Moore III. Prior to that, Frances and Virgil Moore Jr. owned the newspaper from 1963

until 1989.

The Breckenridge American has received numerous awards for publishing a quality newspaper, including recognition from the National Newspaper Association, the Texas Press Association and the West Texas Press Association.
