Princeton Community Comes Together Through Mexican Bingo Game Princeton, NJ - Strangers got to know each other during a game of “Loteria” in Princeton on June 16. The event was put on by Princeton officials in an attempt to connect neighbors who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to meet. They are hoping this helps bridge the divide in today’s contentious political environment.

Princeton Human Services, the Princeton YWCA, and the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF) put together an event on June 16 at the Community Park School playground in which residents played “Loteria,” a Mexican Bingo game. Donors and volunteers assisted with the event. (IG)

Weird News

Dead Man’s Parrot is Being Considered as a Witness in a Murder Trial

Michigan – A woman is accused of killing her husband. The prosecutor is considering putting the victim’s parrot on the stand to testify. Glenna Duram was charged in June for the May 2015 murder of her husband Martin at their home. The police said Martin was shot five times, including once in the head. His wife Glenna also suffered a shot in the head. In the beginning, the police thought there was an intruder who committed the crime. But, a handgun was found in their home, together with some alleged suicide notes written by her to her ex-husband and children. This shifted the suspicion on Glenna. Martin’s ex-wife Christine Keller inherited his parrot after his death. She now believes that Bud, an African gray parrot, saw the tragic event. “Two weeks after the incident, Bud started going into rants I couldn’t explain,” she told Fox17Online.com. “Screaming, yelling, and always ending with ‘don’t shoot!’ I believe with all my heart that those are pretty close to last words of Marty.” There is a video of Bud saying “Don’t shoot!” and prosecutor Robert Springstead hasn’t ruled out using it in court. His first step is to determine if anything the bird says could be considered admissible. It’s unlikely that Bud would be an actual witness for the prosecution, but it’s possible the video of him saying “Don’t shoot!” could be admitted as evidence. (IG) 6

Zoës kitchen 6 San Antonio Locations | 6 Austin Locations Monday - Sunday 11:00 AM - 9:30 PM

Fresh ingredients, clean recipes, and six locations in San Antonio & six in Austin make Zoës Kitchen a great choice this month. Staying on focus eating healthy can be difficult but Zoës Kitchen makes their recipes from scratch every day. They give you a large array of grilled meats, vegetarian items, and fresh salads & sandwiches. We recently went there to try out their newest partnership with Whole30 in their menu that offers compliant kabobs & plates of vegetables and meat. I opted for the salmon kabobs with grilled potato salad (yes, grilled). The meal comes out fast & tastes like it was prepared with care. We highly recommend you stopping by if you’re looking for a place to grab some great food without wrecking your waistline.

healthy living

by Melanie Tawil

Staying motivated during the summer can be incredibly difficult. The kids are home from school. There are a million dishes in the sink that need to get finished before bed. There’s always someone (a child or spouse) derailing you from your neverending task list that just seems so out of reach. Oh, and you still have your job to add on to this. So, how do you tackle the mountain of work without burning out? The answer is so incredibly simple that it may shock you. Self-care. We often put this incredibly important but often overlooked task at the back burner of our 10

THE BINGO NUGGET //JULY 2018

lives. It is critical that we maintain physical, emotional, and mental well-being as part of the formula to keep us from the boiling point of no return. Don’t neglect self-care, here’s why: Know your worth – You need to know you are worth - to maintain a healthy relationship with what should be your priority, yourself. Work on boosting your confidence and self-esteem. It also keeps to remember that you are important and so are your needs.

Stress management – Little bits of stress are totally ok. They usually give us the fire under our feet to get a job done, or meet that deadline, or overdue task. But, constant stress can have an adverse effect on your emotions and, ultimately, your physical health. A couple of self-care tricks you may want to consider are eating healthy, a 5-minute talk with a loved one (not that aunt that’s always up in your business) or, taking a walk. This can greatly diminish the effects of stress to improve your mood and boost your energy and confidence levels.

That makes you less productive, disorganized, and emotionally depleted. Whew, all that makes me stressed out. This unnecessary stress can also add to health problems from anxiety & depression to insomnia and heart A healthy work-life disease. You can easily teeter-totter – I’m fit “me” time in between refraining from using the your professional life. word balance because Let’s take lunch for there’s nothing that adds example. Rather than more stress to my life work through lunch, like than some unattainable so many of us, sit down goal – balance. Being a and enjoy lunch. Read a workaholic is not a virtue, book during your break. although you may suffer Go for a walk. Say “no” from the same thing I do. to more things that you When you are overworked, don’t love. this can accompany stress and exhaustion.

SO, YOU’RE READY FOR A BREAK? Here are some simple and free self-care practices that we can all say “yes” to: • Get moving – go for a walk, light jog, run - 5 – 30 minutes, or just around the block or just simply dance around for a song. • Meditate – sit in silence for 1 minute (I promise this is all you may need) • Listen to your brain and take a break – you may need to do this throughout the day, it’s ok it will help you keep your focus. • Choose who you spend time with – choose wisely. Surround yourself with positive people (like at the bingo hall). • Laugh – full body laugh at least once a day (remember Patch Adams?) • Add a green to your plate – try to eat at least one leafy green vegetable every day. • Avoid stress/emotional/bored eating – Alert! Alert! Walk away from the kitchen when feeling bored. • Write it out – begin a journal and just write for 1 minute a day, soon you will be writing pages upon pages about your day and maybe count what you’re grateful for. • Just say “no” – 80’s kids will remember we had this drilled in our head. But really, say no to more things that don’t bring you joy. • Stop overthinking – It wasn’t that big of a deal. Stop replaying situations over in your head.

Here’s to a healthy remainder of your summer! 2018 JULY \ THE BINGO NUGGET

MODERN MOM

Putting your best self forward requires intentional choices, (especially for busy moms) That means stepping outside your comfort zone and putting yourself first. But you can feel healthy, look great, and live a joyful life, all while juggling a family and a career. The key? Designing a balanced life through purposeful choices that feed your body, mind, and soul. Easier said than done, right? Julie Burton, author of The Self-Care Solution: A Modern Mother’s Must-Have Guide to Health and Well-Being, understands that struggle all too well. “Most moms feel this damned-if-I-do, damned-if-Idon’t pressure relating to their decision to work or stay home Almost all mothers, regardless of work status, struggle with feelings of guilt when they take time away from their children to practice self-care,” says Burton, whose four kids range in age from 1222. “Moms have a mile-long to-do list, and by default, they often put themselves at the bottom of the list. Sometimes, they don’t even make the list at all.”

16

THE BINGO NUGGET //JULY 2018

6 Simple Self-Care Ideas for Busy Moms To help you kick off your self-care mindset, focus on these six simple self-care ideas and activities to make yourself a priority.

1. Get your body moving. Whether you need to exercise more often or just want to shake up your regular routine, choose activities that motivate you to exercise consistently. Take an outdoor yoga class. Sign up for a 5K race. Hire a personal trainer. Try your hand at Tai Chi. Buy a Pilates DVD to do at home. Burton advises adding an element of fun, like having dance parties in the living room with your kids or going roller skating.

2. Feed your body well. Good food fuels your body, so make sure you eat and drink high-quality ingredients. “It’s a natural tendency to put your children first,” admits Sara Haas RDN, LDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and mother of a 4-year-old daughter. “But you need to nourish yourself with proper foods. It’s great for your kids to see you practicing self-care because you’re modeling healthy behavior.” Some simple ideas to make healthy eating a habit? Go vegetarian once a week. Shop at farmer’s markets for organic produce. Cook from scratch more often. Drink water instead of soda. And take a few minutes to plan what you’re going to keep in your fridge each week so you can make quick, healthy, easy meals.

3. Get connected. Don’t let your busy schedule squeeze out time for family and friends. If weekly date-nights aren’t going to happen (and really, #relationshipgoals, right?), then try to at least schedule some time to connect on a regular basis. Make the first Friday of each month date night, for example, or schedule a one-Saturdaymorning-a-month coffee date with your friends. Make it a goal to invite neighbors over for dinner at least once a month—and plan on pizza and a movie with everyone’s kids, so you don’t feel the need to full-on “entertain.”

lack of sleep has adverse health consequences: people who consistently sleep less than six hours experience increased appetite, which causes weight gain and increases the risk of depression, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 diabetes,” he warns. Things to avoid close to bedtime? Dr. Avidan says stay away from food, alcohol, emotionally upsetting conversations, and stimulants (such as caffeine and nicotine). He also advises establishing a regular, relaxing bedtime routine and to “remember that the bedroom is for three S’s: sleep, sickness, and sex.” (Hey, remember that?!)

6. Stay connected to yourself. As a mom, it’s easy to lose yourself in the day-to-day routines of family life: car pools, laundry, preparing meals, paying bills, cleaning, etc. Before you know it, 10 years have gone by and you’re a shell of your former self. The antidote? Pursue hobbies. Journal. Meditate. Stay abreast of industry trends if you left the workforce. “My book lists self-assessment questions regarding what brings you joy, and this might change over time,” says Burton. “We are evolving throughout our whole lives and staying connected to our innermost passions is what keeps us fully alive and joyful.”

4. Put your healthcare on the calendar. You wouldn’t let your kids miss their annual checkups — so don’t let your own health fall by the wayside! Burton says she’s heard too many stories of women ignoring their body’s signals and neglecting to seek medical attention, resulting in serious health scares. The bottom line? Schedule annual checkups, appropriate tests, mammograms, skin exams, pap smears, flu shots, and vision screenings. And get to the dentist for an annual exam and cleaning.

5. Make sleep a priority. Moms often get sucked into the “get-stuff-donebefore-the-kids-wake-up” mentality. But Alon Y. Avidan M.D., MPH, the Director of UCLA Sleep Disorders Center, cautions moms not to skimp on sleep. “We know from research studies that chronic 2018 JULY \ THE BINGO NUGGET

THINGS TO DO

Lebowski Grill I really tried NOT to give 5 stars here.....Really. First, yes it’s in a Bowling spot. Unexpected to say the least. I kept expecting triple D to show up and have Guy walk around the corner with his signature spiky hair. This place is definitely a candidate for a spotlight like that. We ordered The Walter and the Bacon and Cheese burger with tots. Also ordered the chili-cheese fries. Um, how to describe this? I cannot find anything bad to say or even something a little annoying. I would throw these burgers up against ANY in-town. Even the $19, so called “artisan” burgers that are now so popular. Good

32

THE BINGO NUGGET //JULY 2018

beef, excellent BUNS baby! (Had to say that ;). Cooked well but not overly so and the fries have spice that sticks to them somehow? I mean it is a really good spice and it’s stuck to the fried almost embedded in them! Glorious! Next: One of the cooks came out and asked if I liked “spicy” stuff, I replied “Hell to they yah”. He brought me out some home-made Jalapeno ranch sauce for the fries. No unlike most “Jalapeno Ranch” that is really just green colored ranch dressing this was very, very good. You could taste the Jalapeno and Cilantro in it. The color was actually due to having some good damn ingredients in it.

Fuhgetaboutit...if you want one of the best burgers, this is your joint. Rare a place is that I say I’ll definitely be back, but this is one of them. Great job guys, great job. Christopher S.. 5.0 star rating 6/15/2018 Yelp Review
