Chairman’s CORNER Is it just me, or did summer show up in a hurry this year? It seems like we went from temperatures in the mid-80s to upper 90s overnight. But the warmer weather just meant that it was time for our inaugural Summertime BBQ Fundraiser and 30 Gun Draw. In addition to good food, music and family fun, a total of 30 firearms from Apache Rifle Works were given away to ticket holders in the drawing.

Once again, thank you to our host, sponsors, volunteers and, of course, our fine chamber staff. Special thanks to our Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Rachel London for her leadership and hard work getting this new fundraiser off to such a successful start. Congratulations to all our winners!

Our next big chamber event is the wildly successful Business Expo and Wine Share Aug. 3-4. This year will be our second year at the Hill Country Youth Event Center. This is a great venue, and we had fantastic participation last year. The expo will kickoff Friday evening with a First Friday Wine Share. Be sure to contact the chamber office early to reserve a booth.

Finally, I want to send congratulations and a big shout out to David and Denise LeMeilleur, owners of LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co., on their 20th anniversary in business.

The LeMeilleurs are fantastic chamber members and corporate citizens, in addition to running a vibrant growing business. They also are our June networking/ member luncheon sponsor. Bank of the Hills, a division of Comerica Bank Story and photos by Nancy Foster The theme song for the ’80s popular sitcom “Cheers” comes to mind when you do business with Bank of the Hills, a division of Comerica Bank. The lyrics ended with “You wanna go where everybody knows your name,” and that’s just how this bank makes you feel.

One reason for that, according to Brian Cowen, vice president/banking center manager, is that most of the staff are local, and they take a vested interest in making customers feel special. That’s pretty much evident from the moment you enter.

Upon entering the main office at 1075 Junction Highway, you immediately spot an inviting tray of cookies, an offer of cold water and an inviting lobby furnished in rugged Texas décor. As for the staff, pleasant greetings and smiling faces make for a great first impression.

In 2011, the bank expanded its reach and expertise as a division of Comerica Bank, enabling its customers to have full access to Comerica’s full line of products and services.

Bank of the Hills mirrors Comerica’s philosophy of investing in the community, Brian said, adding that Comerica has been around for 165 years and is strategically aligned by three business segments: The business bank, the retail bank and wealth management. in the place he loves most. He started out as a teller in 2002 and is genuinely honored to now wear the title of VP/ banking center manager.

“Many of our employees advance through the ranks. We all live around here and focus on relationships and helping our clients and community partners be successful,” he said.

“It is such a joy to help our friends, neighbors and everyone in the area. We love this town.”

Bank of the Hills recognizes the opportunity that Kerrville’s growth provides, and their long-time involvement with The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce is a perfect fit for them. It has been a member since 1997 and a diamond member for the past five years.

Brian recognizes the progress the chamber is making under President/CEO Walt Koenig.

“The chamber does a great job of working to benefit the surrounding area and strives to keep Kerrville business friendly,” he said.

He and many of his coworkers are involved with the Young Professionals group and attend as many mixers as possible.

“The chamber’s networking events allow us to promote our business and meet new business owners,” he said.

and how long have you served in that role?

A: I’ve been a member of the Kerrville Area Chamber of

Commerce for the better part of five years, where I have served as an ambassador. However, as a member of the chamber, I volunteer my time by offering seminars and informational talks to business owners and the general public. I am passionate about helping people understand the scope and reality of identity theft.

Q: What other organizations do you volunteer with, and for how long?

A: I have been a Big Sister with the Big Brothers Big Sisters

organization for two and a half years, a Stephen minister leader and deacon at First Presbyterian Church for about four years, and I am also a five-plus year member of the Hill Country Youth Ranch Auxiliary.

Q: How has volunteering impacted or changed your life?

A: Volunteering is one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.

Helping others is paramount to a fulfilled life.

Q: How is volunteering both rewarding and challenging for you?

A: Having as much time as I would like is sometimes difficult; however, the rewards are unlimited. Spending time with my “Little,” Lillie, is priceless. Sometimes, all we do is play games and talk, while

Q: Who inspired you to start volunteering?

A: I’ve always been interested in helping where needed. When I

was raising my children and working a full-time/9 a.m. to 5 p.m. job, I had very little extra time. In the past nine years, since I became self-employed, my time has become more flexible and enabled me to give more of it to others.

Q: In what ways has the chamber been a resource for you as a volunteer or getting involved in community service?

A: Many nonprofits are members of the chamber and networking

together with them helps us all build relationships, as well as a community that can quickly spread the word about when, where and what kind of help is needed within our community.

Q: When not volunteering, where do you work or spend your time?

A: I work with an amazing company, LegalShield, that has been

providing affordable access to our justice system for more than 46 years. I spend my time in training, personal development and reading. I love speaking to service organizations, such as Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs, along with others.

Inaugural event hits the

bull’s-eye Summertime BBQ Fundraiser deemed a success Story by Autumn Bernhard | Photos by William Houghton The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce tried something new this year. Instead of having competitors aim at targets, the chamber had their sights set on another target — a gun drawing.

The chamber made the decision to introduce a new event to the community, replacing the Big Shoot with a Summertime BBQ Fundraiser.

“With the competition, it was hard to do because we struggled to get participation from sponsors,” said Rachel London, vice president and chief operation officer of the chamber. “This event was not sponsor driven, it was more raffle driven. The raffle was our main focus.”

And that mindset proved successful considering the chamber surpassed its net profit goal by almost $8,000.

The goal was $16,000, and the chamber made $23,907.81.

The barbecue was held at Apache Rifle Works in Comfort and sponsored by Texas Hill Country Bank.

“I was concerned with it being the kick-off event, plus it was hot and was in Comfort instead of Kerrville,” Rachel said.

“But we were able to pull it off in the end.”

Roy Thompson, president and CEO of Texas Hill Country Bank, thought the new event was a success.

“The event was great,” he said. “Even though it was warm during the day, the first hours had a good breeze. It was great to see old friends and clients, and meet new people. And there’s nothing better than a summertime barbecue.”

Vendors at the event included Bill’s Bar-B-Que, Hill Country Distillers LLC, State Farm, 103.7 “The Buck,” a main gun vendor and others.

Attendees also were able to use Apache Rifle Works’ indoor gun range.

The money raised will go to the chamber and a portion of the funds will be used to create a new scholarship fund to help Kerr County students.

Proceeds were collected from the sale of about 500 tickets for a 30 gun draw. Each ticket was $100. The guns, provided by Apache Rifle Works, ranged in caliber, make and model.

“The event went over awesome,” Rachel said. “We had a good turn out of attendees and vendors. A lot of people said it was a great idea. I was really pleased.”

Texas Hill Country Bank is one of the chamber’s five major event sponsors this year.

“Being a sponsor does a good job at marketing for us,” Roy said, noting that it helps get the word out about the bank’s new location, which is set to open later this year.

“The more fundraisers the chamber can have, that’s easier than raising member dues.”

Roy has been a banker in Kerrville for 22 years and has been involved with the chamber the entire time.

“You don’t have a strong community without having a strong chamber,” he said. “(The bank) sponsors events, because it’s part of us being local and to support the community. It works as getting us awareness to the community and helping the chamber.”

Netting more than $11,500, the class selected beneficiaries and generous dollar amounts to impact four organizations and two or more individuals, as well as the future leadership program. Class members met at The Kerrville Daily Times to present K’STAR Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters, Hill Country Crisis Council and Kerr County Wounded Warrior Family Hill Country Adventure with $2,500 each.

Mixer snapshots Story by Rachel London | Photos by William Houghton The June mixer was a membership/networking luncheon, which was sponsored by LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. and held at the Mount Wesley Conference Center, 610 Methodist Encampment Road.

David and Denise LeMeilleur opened LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. in June 1998 on Peterson Drive, vowing to provide quality automotive repair and service, superb customer care and pricing that would build a loyal clientele. It was on target for success. Over the next 20 years, the business expanded and flourished, resulting in a move to larger quarters on an expansive lot at the corner of Yorktown Boulevard and Stadium Drive in 2012. David is an ASE certified master auto technician, who has been a mechanic for more than 40 years. Denise is a past board member of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of Rotary Club of Kerrville and past president of the Volunteer Services Council for the Kerrville State Hospital. Their company has been members of the chamber since 2007. David gave an interesting talk about the history of automotive repair and how technology has changed so much.

‘Get Connected’ with businesses and the community Aug. 3-4 The chamber hosts Wine Share, Mixer, Business Expo, Home and Garden Show Story by Chelsea M.K. Stack | Photo by Scott Raggo The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual Business Expo and Wine Share Mixer event, “Get Connected,” on Aug. 3-4 at the Hill Country Youth Event Center, 3785 Texas 27.

“It’s a good way (for people) to see a wide variety of the businesses that Kerrville has to offer, and it’s a good way for them to network their business — even if they’re not set up for the (expo or) show,” said Rachel London, vice president and chief operating officer of the chamber.

The First Friday Wine Share and Mixer will be from 5:15 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, and the Business Expo, as well as the new Home and Garden Show — which will replace the car show this year — will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. The event will feature more than 100 business booths with products to purchase, a kid’s zone with a children’s play area and bounce houses, as well as food trucks and exhibits ranging from landscaping to home improvement projects at the Home and Garden Show.

“We thought it (the Home and Garden Show) would bring a new twist for businesses that normally wouldn’t get to be apart of it,” Rachel said, adding that it opens it up to vendors that weren’t able to promote their business because of the lack of space — the booths are bigger this year.

Vendors include builders, cabinet makers, Five Star Rentals will do a mock presentation of what an outdoor wedding would look like and John Deere will have some of their vehicles and equipment available to look at.

Chamber members are invited to secure a booth to showcase their products and services to the community; non-chamber members can reserve a booth at a higher rate.

Booths are 10-feet-by-10-feet and limited in number with 8-foot tables available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The booth price is based on location, and electricity is available for an additional fee.

“This is a great way to showcase your business to the community,” according to the chamber’s website. “Come interact and network with businesses, organizations and members of our community.”

“It’s great advertising and exposure for their business,” Rachel said. “Last year, over 600 people came through just on Friday night. (For) this one, there will be over 1,000 people coming through between the two days. A lot of the vendors do pretty well with selling some stuff. It’s a wide variety… (and) not just catered to one business — it’s a benefit for all of them.”

Rachel said there is space for only 110 vendors at the expo and 32 vendors at the Home and Garden Show — booths are filling up fast. Applications can be found on the chamber’s website, kerrvilletx.com.

Volunteers shred 13,000 pounds of paper Story by Angela North | Photo by Tom Holden The recent Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce Community Shred Day was the best turn out ever — a huge success. Even the weather was beautiful. Sponsored by Mini Mart, the event was held in the mall parking lot on Cully Drive, directly across from the Post Office on Friday, June 8.

The ambassadors and volunteers helped the chamber staff eliminate more than 13,000 pounds of paper. The event started at 8 a.m., and the truck was full of shredded documents by 9 a.m. Condor Document Services had to dump the truck and then it was filled a second time.

Due to the success and per the request of the community, the chamber will have two more shred days this year in the same location on Aug. 17 and Nov. 2 from 8 to 11 a.m. or until the truck is full.
