During the summer parents try their best to make sure their children have fun things to do, make memories, go to camps, spend time with friends, and have the opportunity to make the most of their summer break. While, that’s a great idea, sometimes we do it at the sake of our own fun, memories, time with friends, and summer. It’s important for parents to take the time to nourish our own relationships and enjoy things for ourselves. As adults we need to maintain our tribe and keep our friendships strong because when life gets hard you will need those friends to hold you and support you. through a few of our neighbor’s yards waving bye. It’s a great way to start the day. Q. Tell us about a favorite vacation with your kids. A. One of my favorite vacations is our annual lake trip. The girls (and their Barbies) like to wake up early and go fishing with me. Q. How do you manage your schedule to ensure quality time with your family? A. It is very hard, but I make it a point go spend one-on-one time with my kids and go on date nights with my wife. Sometimes it is as simple as throwing them on the bed for 10 minutes after I get home. The girls also love to hear we are going on a daddy-daughter date. Q. What advice do you have for new parents? Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”
A. To new parents, I would just say, “Enjoy the journey”. Even the tough times will be missed. Show your kids personal attention Don’t let social media raise your child! Q. Do your children attend public school, private school, or does your family homeschool? A. Public school Q. What forms of discipline have been successful with your children? A. We have run the gamut. I am a personal fan of assigning extra cleaning chores as discipline because parents get a two for one return out of it. Q. If you could choose your child’s careers, what would you choose for each and why? A. Bella would be a teacher because she likes reading and school. Scarlett would be an attorney like

her dad because her comeback comments even at age 5 are legendary. It seems like you can never put her in a box that she does not have an explanation for. For Caroline, we just hope she survives to adulthood. She is our most accident prone, so we will not be picky. Q. What is your favorite activity to share with your child? A. Fishing and camping. We also have a pretty competitive hand-slap game on the way to school. Q. What’s the funniest thing your child has ever said? A. Scarlett recently called me a “Gidiot.” I was wrestling with Bella and I had her pinned pretty good. All of the sudden Scarlett, who was trying to take up for Bella, said “Stop it you idiot!” I stop, look at her, and ask sternly: “What did you say...?” Scarlett, who has the look of a

person who knows they just messed up, says “Gidiot, I said Gidiot dad.” We all fall out laughing. Q. Do you cook? A. Yes. If the grill is going to be used, I am your man. My kids call my BBQ baked beans, “Daddy’s Famous Beans.” I also have a couple of go-to crock pot recipes. Q. Do you clean house? A. Ooooh yes. Q. Do you do laundry? A. While Andrea does the majority of it, I do help. I am definitely better at the washing than the folding. Q. Have you served as your child’s sports team coach? Which child and sport? Do you recommend coaching your children? A. Yes, I served as a basketball coach for Bella when she was 6-7. I realized kids that age are harder to coach than I thought. Regardless it was a great experience, and now my other kids keep asking when I am going to coach them. My personality is probably better suited for coaching an older group than can listen and implement instruction. If I told the kids to stop following the ball once, I yelled it a thousand times… Great memories. Q. What church does your family attend? A. We attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 10

Weaver Street in Beaumont.. Q. Which of their children’s and family ministries would you recommend? A. Our church has an outstanding primary group for kids ages 2-11 that involves teaching age appropriate lessons, sharing time, and singing time. Q. Are there any upcoming activities at your church you’d like to invite families to? A. My favorite yearly activity for kids is our trunk-or-treat. There is always a huge turnout, and the kids always have a great time. It will take place this year on Halloween from 6-8pm. Besides that, church starts every Sunday at 9 at the Beaumont congregation on Weaver Street. The more the merrier. Q. What other parenting memories or thoughts would you like to share with our readers? A. Our children are our future and deserve the best shot at a successful life! In my law practice, I handle family law cases. There is nothing more heartbreaking than to see a child who does not have the love, peace, and security that a child deserves, especially when it stems from an absent or abusive parent. Parents don’t have to be perfect. Goodness knows that I’m not. Most of the time a child just needs a parent to be actively present in their life. Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

Cowboy Legends and Life
The Stark Museum of Art in Orange has two special exhibitions featuring cowboy subjects on display. The exhibitions Portraits from Cowboys of Color: Photographs by Don Russell and Cowboy Legends and Life will present differing, although complimentary, aspects of the cowboy tradition in art. Both exhibitions will be on view through September 29, 2018. Portraits from Cowboys of Color: Photographs by Don Russell highlights the modern African American rodeo cowboy. It features portraits of contemporary cowboys and cowgirls who ride and rope in Cowboys of Color rodeos. The works reveal a tradition of black

cowboy culture often overlooked in western history and art. Photographer Don Russell made the works over a two-year period and also published a book on the subject. The portraits are recent gifts to the Stark Museum of Art. Cowboy: Legends and Life presents the theme of the Cowboy as an icon for America. This exhibition explores the imagery of the cowboy and cowgirl in American Western art. It will present both the idealization and the working life of 28

men and women of the West. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, rare books and photographs from the collections of the Stark Museum of Art give a survey from the late nineteenth century through the art of today. Artists include Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell, William Herbert Dunton, Frank Tenney Johnson and others. The exhibition will include new acquisitions for the collections including photographs by Richard S. Buswell and Bonnie Schiffman. Curator Sarah E. Winner of SYTYCD Returns for 5th annual National Dance Day Lauren Froderman, winner of the 7th season of “So You Think You Can Dance” will return for her 3rd visit to Southeast Texas, July 28 for the 5th annual National Dance Day of Southeast Texas. The event moved to Beaumont last year and will be held indoors in the lobby of the Edison Plaza, 350 Pine Street. The local event continues to be the only National Dance Day event listed on the Dizzy Feet Foundation’s website between New Orleans
and the Austin area. “Lauren is a phenomenal guest and teacher,” said Penny LeLeux, event organizer. “Area dancers are excited about her return.”

The first three years, the event was held in Orange, at the Riverfront Pavilion, but the extreme heat necessitated a move indoors and due to a series of unforeseeable events, the decision was made last year to move it to Beaumont. Harvey’s damage to Orange venues is keeping it in Beaumont this year. “Edison Plaza is going to give the event a beautiful backdrop,” said LeLeux. “I want to thank G&G Enterprises and the Green Light Kitchen for sponsoring the facility for this year’s event and the Holiday Inn on Walden Road for sponsoring lodging for Lauren.” Sponsorships are still being sought
to cover other expenses and limited booth space is available for $200. The day kick off with a free event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. which is a combination of dance performances from area dance groups, line dances and mini classes in various styles such as Belly Dance and Salsa, for all ages, plus a tutorial of the official National Dance Day choreography. “We’ve added another hour and possibly more, this year, because the event continues to grow in the number of dance groups participating,” said LeLeux. Dance classes with Lauren are scheduled for the afternoon, for $50. That includes time for them to
