MidiCi Pizza looks for experiences that create real human connections For MidiCi Pizza and its owners Brandon and Chantel Gawthorp, the reason behind one of Katy’s newest pizza restaurant is simple. “People are the best thing that can happen to anyone is the motto of MidiCi” Chantel said. “Like in Italy, we believe a meal is about taste, flavors and colors, but it is also, and if not more, about the people, the conversations, and the laughter. The best meal is one that is shared with others and at MidiCi we strive to bring friends together around traditional wood fired Neapolitan pizza served in a warm and inviting atmosphere. “Everything we do is motivated by our will to make the world a friendlier place, and to serve fine authentic Neapolitan pizza. From our food, to our live tree and plants, the wood-fired ovens, our kitchen known as “the

heart”, and even the Vittoria prosciutto slicer, and the Athena espresso machine. Together, it’s an experience that creates real human connections.” MidiCi was founded in 2015 in Las Angeles, California and the company has grown quickly with locations now in eight states. In addition of the Katy location, MidiCi recently opened a location in Pearland and in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. MidiCi has created its own dining category called “Fast Fine”. The restaurant has the elements of a fine dining but the price point and ordering process similar to a fast-casual restaurant like Café Express or Panera Bread. MidiCi does offer full service for guest friends that dine at the Bar. At the center of the Katy location, are two wood-fired ovens. The ovens are made and imported from Naples,

Fifth Street Ladies hold monthly free event for charities By Tom Behrens Downtown old Katy has its own small-town Texas charm even though the boundaries and population have grown in leaps and bounds. The historical buildings, churches, businesses and parks of downtown Katy speak of days gone by and new days ahead. Many of the businesses that line Hwy 90 have been there for a long time. Katy Market Days on Second Street gives a touch of community togetherness in historic downtown on the third Saturday of each month. Now there is a new community event, Fifth Street Ladies’, tucked away at 5711 Fifth Street. The Ladies last community event was Friday, June 1. Gloria Poe-Chaar, Supernatural Massage, and Traci Fields, Traci Fields Photography are the founders of the Fifth Street Ladies. Both women opened their businesses in February. “No one knew we were there,” said

Fields as their locations were behind other shops that fronted Fifth Street. The first event in March had several businesses and services participating; the events were held on Friday evenings. Additional Katy merchants joined in, and then some dropped off a little, and now some more businesses joined in; the crowd is getting larger. Fields said she estimates there were probably 50-60 people visiting, looking, and smelling the barbecue that was cooking. Poe-Chaar said the other shops on Fifth Street, before she opened her massage business, had talked about doing something like Katy Market Days, but it had never gone beyond talk. With the encouragement of Poe-Chaar and Fields, the Ladies on Fifth Street, put together the first community event. “There are about four or five (lady business owners) involved,” said Poe-Chaar. “We decided to have our event on Friday evenings

between 5 and 8 p.m. People start coming by about 5:30 and stay until 8:30-9:00 p.m.” “Friday’s (June 1) event was our biggest one, 50-60 people,” said Fields. “We geared up for Father’s Day. We also had things for the kids, something for everyone. We had three animal rescues groups present, Daddy Duncan’s BBQ was serving delicious barbecue. No Label Brewing Co. was a sponsor who helped us with the advertising. We had a different crowd of people than before. In May we had a lot of make-up vendors, jewelry vendors and crafts.” The ladies will be taking June, July and August off because of the summer heat. In September the Ladies will probably change the event to Saturdays to draw bigger crowds. The name might change also but it will still be hosted by Ladies on Fifth Street. “But, when we change it to Saturday it will still be
in the evening,” said Poe-Chaar. “It’s a free community event. We give away rafle baskets with lots of goodies. In June we had a free poker game and the winner received a nice gift basket. The barbecue charged and just about ran out of food. Vendors do charge for their items.” “It’s mostly a way to establish ourselves as new business owners and showcase our location,” said Fields. “Katy Market Days on Second Street is established and has large crowds coming to their events. A lot of people that are coming to our events say they never knew we were here. “I don’t sell a product; my neighbor (Traci Fields Photography) doesn’t sell a product, so we can’t participate in Katy Market Days,” said Poe-Chaar. “It was kind of a way for us to do something similar on a smaller scale and let people know about Fifth Street.”

Relay for Life offers area residents chance to fight back at cancer By Jimmy Galvan For local resident Greg Luther, the battle against cancer never ends. “I was diagnosed 15 years ago with cancer and even though I have been declared cancer-free — the fight still goes on,” Luther said. Luther participated in the annual Relay for Life event held in Katy as he has done for the past 10 years. “I just think this is something that once you get involved with it, you want to stay involved and fight for not only yourself but for those who are battling this disease,” Luther said. “I know I won’t stop fighting.” Luther was one of many local residents that lined up and walked in the annual event that is held all across the country. Relay For Life is a community based fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Each year, more than 5,000 Relay For Life events take place in over 20 countries. Events are
held in local communities, campus universities and in virtual worlds. As the American Cancer Society’s most successful fundraiser and the organization’s signature event, the mission of Relay For Life is to raise funds to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers. A Relay For Life event is organized under a volunteer Relay Committee, and implemented by volunteers. It is often organized as a multi-day public gathering, spanning all day and night in a large outdoor space, and many people bring tents and camp out around the walking tracks. Currently, almost 4 million people take part in Relay events in over 5,000 communities in the United States. It is estimated that Relay For Life events have raised nearly $5 billion to date. The first team to raise over $1 million was the Rosebud Miners. The largest virtual fundraising event is Relay For Life of Second Life, which has raised more than $3,000,000 since 2005.

Create your own pizza from over 40 fresh ingredients!
In May 1985, Dr. Gordon Klatt, a colorectal surgeon from Tacoma, Washington, decided he wanted to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Because he enjoyed marathons, Klatt walked around the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington for 24 hours. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He walked approximately 83 miles and raised $27,000 for cancer research. Nearly 300 of Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. After this event, Klatt thought about how other people could participate in a similar event in their own community. He recruited a small team of people to host the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. The American Cancer Society defines a cancer survivor as anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer. At most Relay events, a Survivor Dinner is held for survivors in the community. The Survivor Lap, which is often the first lap of a Relay event, is used to identify the survivors. At some events, survivors are invited to speak at Relay events to encourage those with cancer. The Closing Ceremony, held toward the end of Relay events, is when participants pledge to take action and spread awareness of cancer research, treatments, and prevention. Participants are encouraged to hold events in the community to increase awareness of smoking cessation, routine screenings, general cancer awareness and volunteer opportunities. A representative from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network(ACS CAN) may come to a Relay event and speak about cancer prevention bills and legislation that are trying to be passed as well as encourage ACS CAN participation.

Memorial Day Ceremony

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 held its remembrance ceremony Monday, May 28 in honor of Memorial Day. The ceremony features speeches from local dignitaries as well and culminated with a ceremony honoring all the fallen Katy veterans.
July 2018 / Katy Today / 17
A large group of local citizens were present for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 as it held its remembrance ceremony May 28 in honor of Memorial Day. Katy Mayor Chuck Brawner started off the event with a short speech as Katy paid homage to those veterans that paid the ultimate price during foreign wars. Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. The holiday was held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970. It marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Two other days celebrate those who serve or have served in the U.S. military: Veterans Day, which celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans and Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. remembrance celebrated earlier in May, specifically honoring those currently serving in the U.S. military.

VFW Post 9182 Commander Michael Mastrangelo looks at Medal of Honor badges that were donated to the post and are on display at the Floyd E. Breedlove Memorial Museum.
Back Home
After flooding issues, Katy VFW Post 9182 heralds new opening By Jimmy Galvan Katy’s veterans are finally returning home. After being ushered out of their post due to flooding issues from the 2016 Tax Day flood and Hurricane Harvey, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 will finally head back to its Floyd E. Breedlove Post. “We will finally be home,” said VFW Post 9182 Commander Michael Mastrangelo. “We are so grateful to the city for their help in getting us back to our home. This also will usher in another era of mutual support with the city.” The VFW Post has been the home of veterans since 1947 when the building was constructed on the land. In the 1970s, the building was turned over to the city of Katy for a price of $1 a year with the city giving the veterans the rights to use the building for its activities. “It has been a very good relationship for the city and the VFW,” Mastrangelo said.
In 2011, the Katy Veterans Memorial Museum was added to the front of the VFW Hall as an added attraction that showcased Katy’s veterans’ contributions to the foreign wars. The museum covers all of the wars that the United States has been a part of and includes an area dedicated to all of the military services. In April of 2016, the Tax Day flood hit the Katy area and it marked the first time the VFW was weathered out of the building. At that time, the building took 18 inches of rain and the VFW post had to vacate the building. “At that time, there was a lot of misunderstanding about what would happen to this building,” Mastrangelo said. “Some said it would be torn down and others said it would be totally rebuilt.” Andy Anderson, junior vice commander for the post, said the building was more than 85 percent complete when Hurricane Harvey set the post back even more. “At that point, we were devastated,” Anderson said.
July 2018 / Katy Today / 23
VFW Post 9182 Commander Michael Mastrangelo points to the post’s original constitution that was originally drafted in 1947 with the formation of the post. It hangs in the foyer of the VFW Post home located on George Bush Drive in Katy.
But when Katy Mayor Chuck Brawner was elected to office, he made a promise to the veterans that the building would be restored to its former glory and use.
“We had moved to a small building in the park and our membership was decreasing,” Mastrangelo said. “Mayor Brawner was very understanding with us and he made a commitment to rebuild the building and renovate it.” After months of working on the building, the veterans were set to return to the building on Sept. 11, 2017 but then Hurricane Harvey made its presence felt in Southeast Texas and the building again suffered major flooding damage. Hurricane Harvey dumped 27 inches of rain into the building and totally destroyed the work that was done and again left the post without a home. During the floods, Mastrangelo said some of the historical artifacts in the museum were lost. “It was heartbreaking to lose some of the stuff that is lost because you can’t get them back again,” Mastrangelo said. “But were are thankful that we were able to keep what was kept.” But the second flood again kept the veterans from coming back to their home again. “That pushed us back even more,” Mastrangelo said. Again, the city of Katy stepped up and started to work to restore the building. The building was torn down to its bare walls. “It looked like a huge airplane hanger in here,” Mastrangelo said. “In November, the build back started on the building and that included a whole new design to the interior of the building.”
24 / Katy Today / July 2018
Mastrangelo admitted the second flood was almost a blessing to the post in that it forced them to get rid of excess “stuff that had been stored inside of rooms.”
“It forced us to get rid of stuff or at least get a better handle of what we have,” Mastrangelo said. “All of the issues that we had with the building were addressed with the renovations including new windows and doors.” “It has been a blessing because this building has now been rebuilt like it is new again,” Anderson said. “All the walls and suspended ceilings were taken out and all the walls had to be cleaned and dried out. “The city has been so gracious and that starts with (Brawner),” Anderson said. “They have been phenomenal to work with on this project. It was a complete build out.” Anderson said the post is still concerned about rain but a recent storm dropped 5.5 inches of rain on the building and there were no leaks to be found at the hall. “The city is working on deepening the bayou that runs next to the building and that will help in the event of another big storm,” Anderson said. “We have even talked about the possibility of purchasing some dikes to place on one side of the building to prevent flooding. “We are back in our home and the city really helped us out to get us back in here,” Anderson said. “We give a lot of hours to this community but this community has really given back to us over the years. Just come and take a look at this building and you will see what the city of Katy has done for us. It’s great to have a city government that supports the veterans of foreign wars the way they support us.”

The Arc of Katy Gala Annual Gala provides much needed support for Arc of Katy
“Thank you Katy community,” said Fred Shafer, president of the board of directors for The Arc of Katy. “What else can we say to the wonderful Katy community that supported The Arc of Katy 2018 Gala.” Shafer said the support given by the Katy community this year will make this year’s gala go down as the best in the history of the event. This year’s event sold more tickets, had more in attendance and more auction items were purchased this year. “The support comes at a time when the organization needed it the most,” Shafer said. Following the flooding from Harvey, The Arc of Katy has gone through several big changes, which have greatly impacted the operations. For starters, the location that was used previously was flooded so, The Arc of Katy had to search for a new location. The good news is that The Arc of Katy found what we needed — a great new location, at 5819 Tenth Street in Katy. However the new location comes with expenses they haven’t had to incur before such as leased space, lease insurance, the physical relocation to the new location and sprucing up the leased space. “There are those who may say, ‘wow, the Gala is a case of opportunity meeting need — what a coincidence,’”
26 / Katy Today / July 2018
Shafer said. “But, I’m not one of those. I’m sure your support of our annual Gala - coming at the critical time we needed it — was no coincidence. “Katy is a wonderful community that loves and cares for its neighbors,” Shafer said. “At our annual gala, we were able to honor several of the wonderful people and organizations who make Katy such a special place, including two new awards for Hometown Heroes.” Bass Pro Shops was honored as a Hometown Hero for its amazing response in the Katy area from flooding due to Harvey. Longtime Katy ISD educator Audrey Bivens was honored as a Hometown Hero for more than 29 years of working with and creating programs for students with special needs. In other awards, Kingsland Baptist Church was awarded the Ann Davis Founder’s Award for their support of The Arc of Katy. Carolyn Kares was recognized as our Volunteer of the Year for her constant support of The Arc of Katy. “As we continue to turn the corner from Harvey and begin planning for the future, we want to thank the Katy community for your overwhelming support of our programs and participants,” Shafer said.
Pictured are from left, The Arc of Katy board member Amy Campbell; Katy Mayor Chuck Brawner; Katy ISD School Board member Susan Gesoff and former Katy mayor Don Elder. The annual gala shined a spotlight on heroes from the Katy community and honored them while raising funds for area sharities.
