SHALOM AUSTIN STAFF PROFILES GIL LEVY

Executive Director, Jewish Family Service Gil Levy, LCSW, joined Jewish Family Service of Austin in 2015. In his role as Executive Director he provides strategic and operational management of the organization. As a clinical social worker, he also sees clients for individual, couples and family therapy, and administers the organization’s emergency financial assistance and food support services. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Masters in Social Work, Gil is an experienced leader in the human service sector and brings a focus on organizational excellence and growth. Gil sits on the Travis County Emergency Food and Shelter Program Board of Directors as well as the State of Texas Emergency Food and Shelter Program Board. Prior to joining Jewish Family Service, Gil served as the Vice President of Programs for Common Threads, an organization serving at-risk youth through health and nutrition education in cities across the USA. Previously, he also held senior positions at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas. CARLYE LEVINE, LCSW, C-ASWCM Senior Adult Services Director

Carlye Levine, LCSW, C-ASWCM is the Senior Adult Services Director for Jewish Family Service and a native Austinite. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s of science in social work from Columbia University in the City of New York. While in New York following her MSSW, she worked for three years in hospice and palliative care as part of one of the first urban in-home palliative care programs. After returning to Austin in 2008, she worked as a hospice social worker for four years prior to joining JFS in 2012. Currently, she is serving as vice president of the Greater Austin Social Workers, a non-profit organization providing educational and networking opportunities to local social workers. She has been a field instructor for the University of Texas’ Steve Hicks School of Social Work’s GRACE Program since 2013. She has a passion for helping older adults live their best lives by providing counseling, geriatric care management and family consultations. JCC Senior Adult Programs Coordinator Annie Skelton is the Senior Adult Programs Coordinator at the JCC. She has worked at the JCC since 2007 but has worked in the Jewish community since 1994. SHALOM AUSTIN STAFF PROFILES RACHEL WIMBERLEY

JCC Adult Programs Director Rachel Wimberley returned to her hometown of Austin in 2016 after living in Washington, D.C. for over a decade while working at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The highlight of her time at the Museum was coordinating the Office of Survivor Affairs where she worked daily with the Museum’s most important constituency group. She is thrilled to bring her experience to Shalom Austin in the role of Director of Adult Programs. In this role she ensures that the Adult population has access to compelling and engaging programming that promotes health, wellbeing, and lifelong learning. ADAM ROBERTS

Austin Jewish Repertory Theater Director Adam Roberts has served as artistic director, musical director and choreographer for a wide range of companies, productions and initiatives throughout his career, with choreography credits including European concert tours. His students have performed principal roles on Broadway, off-Broadway and in regional theatre, been nominated for the Tony Award, and appeared in film, national tours, and on network television. Present affiliations include Shalom Austin/The Austin Jewish Repertory Theater (Producing Artistic Director), The Long Center for the Performing Arts (Resident Musical Director for Education), TILT Performance Group (Co-Founding Artistic Director), The Actor's School (Voice Faculty/Head of Musical Theatre), and Austin's St. Luke United Methodist Church, where he is Director of Music. Adam holds a master’s degree in music from Florida State University, an Executive Certificate in Arts and Culture Strategy from the University of Pennsylvania, and undergraduate degrees from Kent State University and Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music.

In addition to Adam’s responsibilities as Producing Artistic Director of the Austin Jewish Repertory Theater at Shalom Austin (for which he was recognized with the 2015 Shalom Austin Staff Exemplar of Excellence Award), Adam works closely with JCC Adult Programs as director of The Dell’s Angels community choir and frequent speaker on a variety of topics. JULIA SPARKS

Adult Programs Transportation Coordinator Julia Sparks has 21 years of experience driving buses, first driving city buses in San Antonio, and later in Austin. Sparks started working at the Jewish Community Center in 2004 as the transportation coordinator. She says, “I’ve had many wonderful years here, and enjoy working with the seniors. The fact that transportation is provided and they are able to be active is really important to them and I am so glad I am able to make them feel special.”

JCC Offers Programming for Active Aging

Like many other community centers, JCC Austin has something for everyone in the family – youth sports, a glimmering pool for leisure or lapswimming, and a fitness center that opens its doors to exercisers of all ages and fitness levels. A comprehensive approach to fitness and wellness masks itself in the guise of social activities offered daily, as members practice a variety of proactive strategies to balance their health with their active lifestyles.

Group fitness classes are one of the best benefits of membership, and the JCC centers a large amount of its programming specifically around active aging. With a busy schedule that boasts over 60 group fitness classes per week, the classes are held throughout the day to attract a wide range of participants with a variety of goals and lifestyles.

Group fitness classes for 55+ exercisers include several late morning and early afternoon “Senior Fusion” classes that fuse elements of basic strength training with weight-bearing activities and aerobic exercise. Other classes that are easily accessible to a senior population include seated exercise classes, pilates, which focuses on balance training and core strengthening, yoga for flexibility and meditation, and Zumba for a cardio dance workout that reinvents coordination training into a fun, social activity.

The fitness center itself provides opportunities for non-group exercisers to achieve total wellness with the equipment available to all members. A popular rehab tool named the Total Gym is not often found in fitness centers, but the JCC has one positioned off to the side of the main fitness floor to assist many post-rehab patients continuing their doctor-recommended exercises and warm-ups.

Other cardio pieces with glowing LED screens, such as recumbent bikes and total-body NuStep machines, are perfect for leisure fitness, as they are lined up in front of a parade of silent TVs brimming with the latest news on closed-captioning. ►

While new members can take advantage of special rates for personal training, all members are offered complimentary fitness orientations that may be scheduled at any time of their choosing.

Fitness orientations assist members with starting a fitness routine based on the equipment within the facility and are conducted by fully-trained fitness floor staff. To serve as the guide for each orientation, blank workout cards designed around the selectorized Cybex strength circuit machines are available at the fitness desk and can be stored at the facility for easy access.

Once the time comes, JFS can also help caregivers with advance care and end of life planning, as well as hospice referrals.

“Networking is important to know what’s out there,” Levine said.

JFS also provides outreach, going into resident communities to teach facilities about working with Jewish residents and to connect with Jewish residents so they have a connection to the Jewish community. In order to provide Shabbat and holiday programming, JFS has a network of volunteers and works with rabbis from local congregations who lead services.

“Our goal is to be a continuum, a supportive connection even when people are doing okay as a check in, not just when they are in a crisis situation or when they are not doing well healthwise,” Levine said. ■

It may be difficult to get by in Austin on what social security provides each month. People may be forced to work longer than they had planned due to the rising cost of living. Knowledge is power and being educated about what we all will face as we near retirement age will allow for better planning and hopefully a smooth transition into retirement.

The first thing to consider is health insurance. With the passage of the Affordable Care Act, many changes are coming to our current health care system. If you are over 65 and receiving Medicare, the changes are highly beneficial. However, one fact we cannot escape is that as we grow older our need for good health insurance is crucial. Our use of prescription medication increases and a need to visit specialists increases as well. Will Medicare alone meet all of your medical needs or will you need to have additional medical coverage? Will all of your

Caregiving Across the Spectrum

Being a caregiver is a stressful job. The majority of care provided to older adults comes from by family members. Care giving can take on many forms, ranging from hands on daily care to long distance consultation. More than 45 million adults in America are providing care to adults

Traditionally, care giving roles are held by women – wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and granddaughters. Caring for parents tends to fall to a spouse or a daughter. In addition to the physical care that many caregivers provide, the spiritual, emotional and often financial needs are also being met by family caregivers.

The term “Sandwich Generation” has become commonplace in our vernacular, referring to those simultaneously providing care to aging parents as well as their own children. According to the 2013 study from the Pew Research Center, “Nearly half (47%) of adults in their 40’s and 50’s has a parent age 65 or older and are either raising a young child or financially supporting a grown child (age 18 or older). And about one-in-seven middleaged adults (15%) is providing financial support to both an aging parent and a child.”

What kind of care is being provided? Some caregivers have parents living in their homes and they provide hands on care, helping with activities of daily living. More often, adult caregivers act as a point person for their parents, coordinating medical appointments, encouraging socialization, advocating within congregate living facilities, locating resources, grocery shopping, and making sure all of their needs are met in their own home. Many in the Baby Boomer generation find themselves in situations where they are providing care for a parent in a different city or state. Family caregivers provide an

invaluable service, but for most this is an unpaid job. In 2009, it was estimated that family care giving services were valued at “$450 billion per year” (AARP, 2012).

In addition to the stress of caring for aging parents or an ill spouse or other family member, most who are caregivers are also working full or part time jobs, participating in the community and maintaining social lives. Often, caregivers neglect their own health and self-care. In January of 2013, Jewish Family Service in partnership with caregivers in the community began Kavod (honor) – a resource for caregivers. Kavod meets on the third Thursday of the month to provide a space for connecting with other caregivers in the community to share ideas and get support. In addition to Kavod, Jewish Family Service provides free Geriatric Care Management and consultation services for older adults and those who care for them. ■ Senior Adult Living Guide | 2018

Given that there is not a dedicated facility for Jewish residents, your family wants to find you a place that has a good number of Jewish residents, has Jewish activities and is close to the rest of the Jewish community. Is this even possible? The answer: absolutely!

Jewish Family Service has an extensive outreach program that aims to connect Jewish residents in congregate living facilities to the greater Jewish community. This connection can be achieved in a number of different ways. A subscription to the Jewish Outlook helps keep residents informed of what’s going on in the greater community. A subscription to the JCC Senior Programs’ Silver Scene Newsletter will allow them to connect to the Jewish Community Center. In addition, a connection to a volunteer friendly visitor can provide much needed companionship to assist with social isolation.

If requested, a complete geriatric care management assessment can be completed to make sure that all needs are being met and all resources have been identified. In several facilities, JFS hosts Jewish holiday and Shabbat events for the residents unable to attend services

Senior Living Community Outreach Program For older adults who choose to move into a senior living community, Jewish Family Service provides regular outreach visitation to ensure they remain connected to the Jewish community and to Jewish life. JFS professional staff, along with volunteers and area Rabbinic clergy visit our area’s senior living communities to engage with residents through Jewish programming such as monthly Shabbat services, Jewish holiday celebrations, and friendly visitation.

Outreach is not only limited to Independent and Assisted Living Facilities, but also to low- income senior apartments, personal care homes, Alzheimer’s facilities, and nursing homes. It is another goal of the outreach program to provide education and cultural competency training for facility staff that are unaware of Jewish practices and culture. There are over 50 congregate living facilities in the three-county area that have Jewish residents and most of them are unaware of the in-home connections that JFS can provide. Needing to move to a senior living community should not cause you to lose your Jewish identity. JFS strives to help maintain an active Jewish culture within facilities as well as the at-large community. ■

The first is socialization: being around other people, socializing with peers, spending time with friends and family. Becoming active in a congregation or through senior programs at the JCC can help reduce isolation.

The second is exercising your body: exercise is a natural anti-depressant; it makes your body feel more accomplished and alive following a work-out or even a short walk. The third is exercising your brain: crossword puzzles, Sudoku, reading, trivia, and brain games, anything that can stimulate your brain. The fourth is sleep: getting enough sleep each night provides restoration to your body. Poor sleep can lead to physical problems as well as emo-

Chafetz pointed out that it is possible to have a Jewish burial – with a Jewish service and by being buried as simply as possible – in pretty much any cemetery, including the large cemeteries outside of the congregations’ sections, and small country cemeteries located around Austin, like Bagdad Cemetery in Leander.

Rabbi Marie Betcher pointed out that many congregations, especially those that are small, do not have their own cemetery spaces.

“There are times when a rabbi can consecrate ground for a person, or people who can get together and get space,” she said. “People have lots of options, but when the time comes it’s too late to plan.”

Not only can other cemeteries offer burial space closer to home, they can help families save money.

Some cemeteries require grave liners to prevent graves from sinking, for example. Cemeteries without the requirement spare families that expense.

Texas State and federal Veterans Affairs cemeteries honor veterans, offering burial free of charge for veterans, their spouses and eligible dependents.

Eloise Woods Community Natural Burial Park in Cedar Creek, Texas, owned by Jewish community member Ellen Macdonald, is a woodland burial ground with Jewish space.

“I just think it is closer to what Jewish tradition encourages for healing - as much participation in the burial process as the family chooses,” said Macdonald, who established Eloise Woods in 2010 in order to provide natural burials in harmony with nature.

Eloise Woods burials are permitted only where burial will not degrade the land. As fewer resources are used in natural burial, burial at Eloise Woods is economical as well as environmentally friendly.

“Our cemetery will allow one to be part of a natural cycle,” Eloise Woods’ website states.

As an increasing number of Jews secularize and fewer affiliate with congregations, Betcher explained, some are choosing cremation over traditional Jewish burial.

“Lack of Jewish community drives this,” she said, adding that as society becomes more mobile and less rooted, people do not necessarily plan on being buried with family members or visit graves as much as in the past.

“There’s a lack of attachment,” Betcher said. “I think we’re really losing something here.” ■

We liked the idea of being able to dole dollars out to charities over time, with no pressure to do it all in the first year.

Sabbath Fridays at sundown This celebration marks the end of God’s day of rest after six days of creation. Among the traditions are drinking wine, eating challah (braided bread) and lighting candles. The farewell ceremony to Shabbat, or Havdalah, comes after sundown Saturday. The ceremony includes the lighting of a braided candle, drinking of wine and smelling of sweet spices.

Shemini Atzeret

During this festive celebration, Jews contemplate actions of the past, present and future. Traditional foods include challah and apples with honey, which symbolize wholeness and sweetness, respectively, for the coming year. With Rosh Hashanah, the Ten Days of Awe begin, ending with Yom Kippur.

This sometimes is considered an extension of Sukkot, which ends the previous day. This is the first time the prayer for rain (tefillat geshem) is recited; the practice continues until Passover.

Festival of Lights An eight-day celebration, Chanukah marks Jewish victory over the Syrians and the miracle of rededicating the Temple (enough oil to last eight days). The holiday is celebrated by lighting candles on a menorah, eating latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganyot (donuts), playing with dreidels (spinning tops) and giving gelt (money) or gifts.

Tu B’Sh’vat

Yom HaZikaron

With the eating of fruit and the planting of trees, the holiday celebrates the renewal of spring and growth.

It’s often referred to as the “Jewish Earth Day.”

The observance remembers all who have died fighting for Israel. Memorial candles are lighted, graves visited and psalms recited. In Israel, sirens blare once in the morning and then again in the evening, marking the arrival of Yom HaAtzmaut.

Purim

Feast of Lots A joyous observance, the holiday marks the rescue of the Jews by Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai from the evil Haman. As the story is read aloud, people yell and turn groggers (noisemakers) as they try to drown out the mention of Haman in the Megillah of Esther. Traditions include carnivals, dressing in costume, parties, dances, giving of gifts and eating hamantaschen (three-cornered, fruitfilled pastries). On the day before Purim, some fast in observance of Esther’s request to Jews of Persia to do so for three days.

Pesach

Passover Celebrating the freeing of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, Pesach is observed with a seder – a service and festive meal at which the Haggadah (a collection of texts and commentaries on the Exodus) is read.

Also, symbolic foods are eaten. In remembrance of the Israelites, who left Egypt before their bread had risen, matzah (unleavened bread) is eaten during the eight days of observance.

Sefirat HaOmer

Counting of the Omer Starting the second night of Pesach and ending at Shavuot, this observance lasts seven weeks. Thirty-two days of mourning commemorate the deaths of Rabbi Akiva’s students (see Lag B’Omer entry on this page).

Yom HaShoah

Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemorating the millions killed during the Holocaust, the names of the victims are read in ceremonies. In Israel, a siren blast is heard, as the nation mourns the victims.

Israel Independence Day Observances around the world celebrate Israel’s declaration of independence on May 14, 1948.

Lag B’Omer

Thirty-third Day of Omer On this day, when the plague afflicting Rabbi Akiva’s students ceased, the traditional mourning period of Sefirat HaOmer is suspended. With picnics and outdoor outings, the day – a time of dancing and singing – also commemorates Bar Kochba’s retaking of Jerusalem from the Romans.

Shavuot

Festival of Weeks Coming the day after Sefirat HaOmer ends, Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah at Sinai, as well as the spring harvest. The reading of the Book of Ruth, the eating of dairy products and all-night study are traditional. Religious school confirmation often comes at this time.

Fast of Tammuz Fasting from dawn until nightfall, Jews commemorate the day of Moses’ breaking of the first Tablets of the Covenant, because the Israelites had made the Golden Calf. In addition to marking the siege of Jerusalem before its destruction, the day also starts the Three Weeks, a period of mourning that ends at Tisha B’Av.

town called Austin. “Even though we always thought of moving to Arizona, Austin called to us. A big attraction was the natural beauty of the city and the amount of culture and arts. We moved here 37 years ago in 1980 when the Jewish Federation was located on Balcones Drive, 183 was a two-lane road and there wasn’t a bridge over Lake Austin for the Capital of Texas Highway.”

When they moved to Austin, partly because of the arts scene developed and funded by UT, they became founding members of the Austin Opera, the Long Center and the JCC’s arts series.

They have been involved in the expansion of the J, ZACH Scott Theater, Ballet Austin, Austin Opera, the Austin Chamber and other organizations, serving on the boards of many of these organizations.

We want the young families and their children to have what our children Mitch and Debbie did not have on Staten Island – a great J and a great central place for cultural performances.” As Gloria described, “It is our dream to have a performing arts center at the J and in Northwest Austin.

The Jewish people have always been leaders in the arts and the J’s location could not be more central and fitting.”

Harvey went on to say, “Judaism is important to us and we love seeing how important it now is to the next generation, our granddaughter Rebecca who has a special Jewish identity. It brings us great joy to be able to help provide a space for major performances and a child’s first performance. The arts are an important part of quality of life for us and we are glad that we can help play a part in bringing it to more people in a great facility.”

The existing social hall will be renovated to allow for approximately 400 retractable seats that can be set up in many different sizes and configurations based on an audience size. Similar seating has been used successfully in several other JCCs to allow for the versatility of great seating for performances as well as a flat floor when needed. Located between downtown and the Domain, the Harvey and Gloria Evans Performing Arts Center will have plenty of parking and easy access.

Often on the eve of a new year, we take stock of what we want to achieve in the next year. But, resolutions often end up tossed along the wayside by the beginning of February, if not before.

Hence, I recommend these simple, yet powerful, questions posed by the rabbi for you to ask yourself at the start of this new year, and every day thereafter. Each day is a chance to start over again, if you’ve gone off track.

Perhaps, you will connect to your light by making it a point to laugh more, spend more time with friends and family (or make new friends), connect with nature, or meditate. Or maybe, you’ll begin to follow your dreams no matter your age.

The world seems to have become more chaotic most recently.

We sure could use more light in the world. What will you do to become part of the solution? How will you share your light? One small act of kindness can have the outcome of actually increasing your own joy and physical health.

Remember, we all have light within us, and the capability of sharing this light with the world, no matter our age or physical capacity. And every moment is an opportunity to hit “reset.”

Loewy Law Firm Laura K. moved to Austin in 2014 to be closer to her grandkids. Just a few months after she settled in, Laura was in a serious car crash. A drunk driver ran a red light and t-boned her car. Laura was in the hospital for over a week and then had to recuperate in a nursing home. As the bills started to pile up, her daughter suggested she retain a lawyer. She called Adam Loewy.

Loewy is the owner of the Loewy Law Firm, a personal injury firm he founded in 2005. Loewy quickly went to work on Laura’s case, first ensuring on making sure she was receiving proper medical care and then dealing with the drunk driver’s insurance company. He eventually settled the case for $250,000.

“We focus on leaving a legacy in our clients’ lives,” says Loewy. “I am not just here to work a personal injury case. I help my clients in any way I can, whether it’s obtaining medical care, counseling or anything else. I am here to serve them in any way possible.”

For Loewy, this holistic approach to meeting clients’ needs is the essential part of his personal injury practice. He admits clients are sometimes surprised by the approach. “They think I am just here for the legal part.” But he’s seen the big-picture approach pay off in many ways. “It creates a good attorney-client relationship, it helps them substantially and they leave happy because they know I was always there for them.”

Working with clients in such depth requires time and attention from Loewy. He is extremely selective about the cases he accepts. “I’m focused on people who are seriously injured and who really need my help,” he says. As a result, Loewy only handles 15 to 20 cases at any time, which he feels differentiates him from many other personal injury attorneys, some of whom may have hundreds of active cases at once.

Loewy has seen an incease of older clients in recent years. “More grandparents are moving to Austin to be with their families and others are simply retiring here. It’s great for our community but they sometimes wind up getting in a car crash or falling.”

Loewy and his wife, Phil, are leaders in the Jewish community. They recently donated a historic $100,000 match gift to Shalom Austin. It was the largest single-donor donation in the history of the Annual Campaign. The gift helped leverage nearly $1,000,000 at the Ignite! event in March.

“My wife and I both grew up in St. Louis, which has a very active and well-supported Jewish Federation.

We feel the way to take Shalom Austin from good to great is by increased donations. More money means more staff and programming. We hope our gift spurs a new level of giving to Shalom Austin.”

The Loewys also actively support the Central Texas Food Bank with a $25,000 match each year, Texas Hillel, Chabad, the Fertility Foundation of Texas, including the Tree of Life, and AIPAC. “We believe in keeping our donations local and helping those in the Jewish community,” Loewy said.

“I strongly believe we need to look out for each other and for the State of Israel.”

Outside of the law, Adam loves spending time with his family, including his almost 1-year-old son Clayton, traveling and reading.

eHealth Literacy for Older Adults Bo Xie is a University of Texas professor working on a project that will help older adults use the Internet to make informed choices about health and medicine.

“We know that technology in the form of the computer, Internet and mobile devices can provide useful information,” Xie said. “The trouble is that older adults aren’t always comfortable with these devices or apps or know how to operate them.”

To narrow this gap between literacy and technology, Xie is using Electronic Health Information for Lifelong Learners (eHiLL), a National Institute on Aging funded intervention that promotes peer learning as older adults work side by side to complete online exercises.

“We encourage collaborative learning because it engages senior citizens in the activities and helps them be more successful in adapting to the technology,” Xie said. Patients aren’t the only ones needing to access health information.

Xie stresses that technology is only one solution, but a powerful one, for questions that patients, caregivers and providers might have.

“Technology has the potential to make an impact on disparate populations and health issues,” Xie said.

“It is becoming a very powerful and promising way to provide the information that patients, health care workers and the community not only need, but want to have.”

Aging also changes how the target tissues respond to hormones. As our metabolism slows down with age, the same amount of hormones becomes less effective. Therefore, any hormone therapy must be assessed and adjusted according to the patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s age.

Helping our Kids to Understand Alzheimer’s and Dementia • Make sure the child has time for his or her own interests and needs, such as playing with friends, going to school activities, or doing homework.

• Make sure you spend time with your child, so he or she does not feel that all your attention is on the person with memory care needs.

• Help the child understand your own feelings.

Be honest about your emotions when you talk with a child, but don’t overwhelm him or her.

Many younger children will look to you to see how to act around the person with Alzheimer’s.

Show children they can still talk with the person, and help them enjoy things each day. Doing fun things together can help both your child or grandchild and When a loved one has Alzheimer’s or dementia, it affects everyone in the family, including children and grandchildren. It’s important to talk to them about what is happening. How much and what kind of information you share depends on the child’s age. It also depends on his or her relationship to the family member.

Here are some other suggestions to help children understand what is happening: • Answer their questions simply and honestly. For example, you might tell a young child, “Grandma has an illness that makes it hard for her to remember things.”

• Help them know that their feelings of sadness or frustration are normal.

• Comfort them. Tell them no one caused the disease. Young children may think they did something to hurt their grandparent.

• If the child lives in the same house as someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s: • Don’t expect them to help take care of or “babysit” the person.

MUSIC & THEATER DELL’S ANGELS CHOIR This adult vocal group meets weekly and performs monthly. Choir participation is open to all singers with a basic understanding of reading music. Dell’s Angels Chamber Singers, a subgroup of the choir, requires an audition, additional rehearsals and performances.

ECLECTIC HATHA YOGA Yoga is a practice of conscious breathing, movement (asanas), and awareness to achieve health benefits and relaxation. Medical studies show that a regular yoga practice increases flexibility, strength, balance, energy, focus, and endurance; improves posture; and teaches students to manage work and home stress. TLC TAI CHI Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art designed to enhance the body, mind, and spirit. Develop strength and coordination, reduce stress and increase mental focus. BALANCE, ENERGY & BREATH This class draws from yoga, meditation, chi kung (Chinese yoga), and tai chi to help you build balance, stamina, and focus, with exercises complemented by breathing techniques, quieting the mind and energy work. Hazak is an organization founded in 2002

by United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism in recognition that the most rapidly growing demographic group in the Jewish community are the 55 and older “Baby Boomers”. Hazak provides opportunities to connect with Congregation Agudas Achim, to enrich our personal and congregational lives, to strengthen our congregation, to be a voice for seniors in our shul and, most important, to have fun.

Shalom Austin is a member of Drive a Senior – West Austin and supports this interfaith outreach program. Its primary focus is to provide rides for those 60 and older who are no longer able to drive. Services include transportation to medical appointments and stores, as well as minor home repairs and errands. Volunteers are needed for driving and to make home repairs; volunteer hours are flexible and training is provided.

Empty Nesters is an organization of Congregation Beth Israel for active Seniors 55+. Dinners are held in the Fall and Spring, with other activities held throughout the year. Some of these include theater trips, visits to museums, and surrounding area events.

Dues are $15 per person annually. Board Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month, and open to all.

Some examples of programs held by Hazak are Pray and Stay, Brunch in the Sukkah, first Monday of the month Dinner Out and participation in the annual community wide Kosher Chili Cookoff. We also take museum tours, participate in Torah study and enjoy the 4th of July at the Round Rock Express game.

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE Phone: (512) 250-1043 Shalom Austin Jewish Family Service provides outreach services to older Jewish adults in senior living communities. Jewish adults who have moved to independent living, assisted living or skilled nursing communities are connected to the Jewish community through JFS professional staff visitation, referrals to the JCC, area congregations, and/or a volunteer visitor. The JFS geriatric care management program help older Jewish adults make informed decisions and obtain important services that help them continue living in their own homes. JFS professional staff makes home visits and can work closely with older adults and their families to address a variety of needs. JFS also provides information to families about senior living options in the area, and provides consultation on end-of-life planning.
