A PUBLICATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
Chairman’s CORNER May was a big month in the Hill Country and — as our kids prepare for summer activities in our beautiful Hill Country, including one of our many camps — congratulations are due to graduates of our local high schools, as well as our own young men and women finishing up college. At our house, we have a new college graduate in the family (three down, one to go). As another graduating class of Schreiner University emerges, it reminds us of how thankful we are to have a superior institution of higher education in our midst. We have another group of graduates to recognize, as well. On May 18, the 33rd class of Leadership Kerr County capped off their year with a graduation ceremony. Congratulations to all, including our very own Chamber President/CEO Walt Koenig. You will find Leadership Kerr County graduates serving in leadership roles in business and volunteer organizations all over the area. It’s hard to believe it’s been 22 years since I completed the program, but I still recall the impact it had on my life, and the unique way the program exposes its participants to the needs and activities within our community. I’m proud that our chamber continues to make this fine program available to our local, emerging leaders. Well done, steering committee and graduates! If you know someone with leadership qualities looking for a place to plug in, please consider directing them to the chamber office for information on LKC. Applications for Class No. 34 are being accepted now and participation is limited to 20 members. Our next big chamber event is the wildly successful Business Expo Aug. 3-4. This year will be our second year at the Hill Country Youth Event Center. This is a great venue, and we had fantastic participation last year. The expo will kickoff Friday evening with a First Friday Wine Share. Be sure to contact the chamber office early to reserve a booth. Finally, I would like to tip my hat to those brave men and women who stepped up as candidates to serve on the Kerrville City Council. Win or lose, they all put themselves out there into the political fray. Thank you all for your willingness to serve, including outgoing city council members. Congratulations to Mayor Bill Blackburn and new city council members Eichner and Sigerman. May you serve us wisely and well.

LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. Story and photos by Nancy Foster It was June 1, 1998 when LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. opened its doors on Peterson Drive, vowing to provide quality automotive repair and service, superb customer care and pricing that would build a loyal clientele. It was on target for success. Over the next 20 years, the business expanded and flourished, resulting in a 2012 move to larger quarters on an expansive lot at the corner of Yorktown Boulevard and Stadium Drive. At the helm of this self-dubbed “Mom and Pop” operation are David and Denise LeMeilleur, two of the hardest working and most sincere people you’ve ever met. Their commitment and dedication to their business, employees and community is evident at every turn. Their diverse work backgrounds complement each other: David is president of the corporation and manages the repair side of the business, while Denise — who joined the company in 2008 following a career stint with Wells Fargo Bank — has used her marketing and business skills to grow the business to where it is today. Not only is she the company’s safety manager, but she also manages the

retail side, human resources and marketing. Their company is known for service, repair and maintenance of imports, domestic vehicles, recreational vehicles, exotic cars and light-to-heavy truck work. On their team are three technicians with automotive certifications from vocational colleges and three Automotive Service Excellence certified master auto technicians. David holds the distinction of being an ASE World Class Technician, one of only 2,000 automotive technicians in the country to be earn this title. LeMeilleur’s is a one stop shop, from tires to engine replacements, diagnostics to electrical work, preventive maintenance to fleet services. From bumper to bumper, they can maintain, service and repair any type of vehicle. LeMeilleur’s also is an official State of Texas licensed vehicle inspection station. LeMeilleur’s stays on the cutting edge of their field. David has a certification in hybrid repair and will take tests to receive ASE certification this summer. Theirs is one of the few area shops that have a technician with certification for
hybrid service and repairs. Their business has grown, in part because of their many satisfied customers, and they have racked up many accolades throughout the years, including the 2017 recognition as “Best RV Repair” by The Kerrville Daily Times’ Readers’ Choice Awards. They also receive numerous referrals from AAA, NAPA AutoCare Center and advertisements in RV park publications throughout the Hill Country. Good employees and good management have been the mainstay of their success, Denise said. They average 12 fulltime employees, many who have been with them for many years. She explains the company’s credo on their workers. “We invest in our employees and their families,” she said. “We are often together here at work more than they are with their own families, and our goal is create a great working environment. We can’t build a great team and be this successful of a company without our employees.” Employees reap the rewards of this philosophy. “Every Wednesday, we cook for them. We shut down at lunch and sit around tables for a family-style lunch. We also do a quarterly event, where each employee can bring a guest and (have) an annual off-site event for employees and their families,” Denise said. “In addition, we offer a very nice benefit package that includes health insurance, short-term disability, vacations, paid major holidays and a matching retirement plan.” The LeMeilleur’s have deep roots on both sides in the Kerrville area and reside at Morris Ranch in Fredericksburg on property that has been in Denise’s family for 75 years. A deep faith and a need to give back are core values to each of them. Among the charitable and nonprofits they support are Volunteer Services Council for Kerrville State Hospital, Christian Men’s Job Corps, Christian Women’s Job Corps, as well as youth organizations, including local 4-H and the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show. They also participate in CarFest, sponsored by certified auto professionals, to repair cars and give to those in need. David and Denise are entering into their 21st year as members of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce and currently hold platinum status. “It is important to be involved in the business community, because economic growth comes from buying local, investing local and hiring local,” Denise said. “A good way to achieve this is to support our chamber, because they support local business growth in this community.” When asked what she hopes people will remember about their company, Denise responded by saying, “At the end of the day, we want people to think of us as trustworthy, reliable and of high integrity.” You can meet the LeMeilleurs when they sponsor the chamber luncheon on June 21 at Mount Wesley Conference Center. The next day, they will celebrate the milestone of their 20th anniversary in business and their 39th wedding anniversary. LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co., 500 Yorktown Blvd., is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday–Friday. For more information, visit thedieseldr.com or call 895-2888.

Get to Know Volunteer Spotlight
Q&A with Monica Zuniga Q: What is your volunteer role with the chamber and how long have you served in that role?
A: I serve as chair of the newly formed group called Boomers and
Beyond Alliance. It is a network of business professionals focused on educating the aging community and their families about resources available to them locally. Through education, advocacy and community outreach, the BBA seeks to strengthen the continuum of care and improve the overall quality of life for all we serve.
Q: What other organizations do you volunteer with and for how long? A: I have been on the Alamo Senior Advisory Committee for the Alamo
Area Agency on Aging through Alamo Area Council of Governments for more than two years, Boerne Senior Service Network for two years, and have been serving in the children’s ministry at my church for more than three years. This January, I started serving as a life group leader at my church.
Q: How has volunteering impacted or changed your life? A: There are many different types of companies in BBA and the other
organizations for which I volunteer. As I learned about each one of them over time, it helped me to make connections to some needs that arose in my personal life. When my grandmother had an increased need for care, I was able to turn to those group members not only for assistance with the service they provided, but also for support and encouragement. The relationships formed in these organizations are of great value to me.
Q: What is the most rewarding and challenging part about volunteering for you?
A: The most rewarding part is simply helping others. I love people, and my passion is to be able to make meaningful and practical connections that will help them grow. The only challenge I find is having time to help as many people as I would like. I overcome that challenge by setting boundaries while still doing what I can. Q: Who inspired you to start volunteering? A: I have had many influences to inspire my desire to volunteer. My
grandfather volunteered in his community for a number of organizations; my mom was always going above and beyond to do for our family and others, but the one who inspired me the most is Jesus Christ. My daily desire is to be used by the Lord to show His love to others... to attempt to be “His hands and feet.”
Q: In what ways has the chamber been a resource for you as a volunteer or getting involved in community service?
A: The chamber has been extremely welcoming to the idea of the BBA
Q: When not volunteering, where do you work or spend your time? A: I love my job working for Alamo Hospice in Kerrville as a Hospice Consultant. I enjoy time with my mother, brother and his family, friends and working on my house.

A summer of skill-building, friendships and independence 3 local camps offer opportunities to campers of all abilities By Chelsea M.K. Stack The traditional overnight summer camp experience is one that will stay with children for the rest of their lives. Along with having a week or a month of total independence from their parents, they’ll learn new skills, try activities and form friendships. Three local camps and chamber members have focused their services to three very different but specific markets: children with disabilities, girls and boys.
Heart O’ the Hills Summer Camp for Girls Owned and operated by the Ragsdale family, Heart O’ the Hills Summer Camp for Girls, or “The Heart,” is a private, traditional summer camp for girls ages 6 to 16, located at 2430 Highway 39 in Hunt. “My dad was a chamber of commerce executive,” said Jane

Ragsdale, camp director and owner. “He came to Hill Country camps as a boy from Galveston, and in college (he) worked during the summer at camp and (eventually) year-round. In his late 30s, he had the opportunity to buy Camp Stewart. … He excelled at the chamber because it has a lot in common with camps — bringing people in and putting (them) together. … He was instrumental in putting together Leadership Kerr County.” The Heart has friendly, competitive tribes and a tradition of etiquette designed to emphasize authentic role models, teamwork, leadership, time management and living independently. “The truth is, I really do believe everybody should go to camp,” Jane said. “It does something for kids that’s irreplaceable. They get a level of education that isn’t possible otherwise.” Its limited camper enrollment gives it a family atmosphere. “Heart is a very friendly camp because it’s small. … You know everyone in camp, every counselor by name and where they’re from,” Jane said. “It allows me to be personally involved in everything that goes on at camp.” The camp offers two- and four-week overnight sessions with more than 50 instruction-oriented activities, including archery, cooking, fencing, climbing, fishing, drama, gymnastics, dance, Polocrosse and wilderness survival. Although she finds it hard to make the 30-minute drive to the mixers, Jane said she loves them. “Every time I go, I see someone I need to talk to. It’s great for networking, and it’s fun,” she said, adding that she also enjoys CoffeeTalks. “(They’re) early, so it doesn’t interrupt the work day. … You see people, learn something new and then go back to the office before the day even begins.” For more information, visit hohcamp.com.

Camp Children’s Association for Maximum Potential Camp Children’s Association for Maximum Potential’s mission is to strengthen and inspire individuals with special needs — and those who care for them — through recreation, respite and education. “I’m most proud of the community we build here that promotes dignity of respect to everyone … be fully accepted,” said Brandon Briery, chief program officer/ executive camp director of Camp C.A.M.P. “The biggest asset we have … is our volunteer counselors. I see such a different side of teens and young adults who put others before their needs, build compassion and character, then leave this place, go out into the world and make it a better place.” Camp C.A.M.P., 515 Skyline Drive in Center Point, is located along the Guadalupe River and offers wellequipped, wheelchair-accessible, climate-controlled cabins with 24-hour care by counselors and during medical sessions.

Cover story Camps Camp C.A.M.P. has a series of six-day overnight summer camp sessions for those who may not be eligible to attend other camps due to the severity of their disability or medical condition. “I’m awestruck sometimes that some people in our community don’t even know we exist, so helping us make more connections is one of our goals in affiliation with the chamber,” Brandon said. “The mixers (are an) opportunity to see a lot of different businesses and people in the community in one location. I’ve been through Leadership Kerr County; … that experience was incredible and helped me connect with other businesses and entities in the community.” Campers experience adaptive summer activities, such as horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, archery, drama, dances, music recreation, outdoor cooking, as well as arts and crafts. Siblings without disabilities also are welcome at summer camp activities. “A lot of camps for people with special needs are just for them, but having a sibling (there) benefits them more.

Camp Stewart for Boys “Don’t wait to be a Man to be Great, Be a Great Boy” is Camp Stewart for Boys’ motto. Camp Stewart is a privately owned, Christian-oriented, non-denominational camp for boys ages 6 to 16 that focuses on the total development of each boy and creating memorable adventures. The 500-acre property at 612 FM 1340 in Hunt is in the heart of the rugged Texas Hill Country, near the headwaters of the Guadalupe River with natural cedar, giant cypress and various oaks. “Camps have done a lot to bring people to this area … — it’s a huge boost to the economy. We’re some
of the oldest businesses in business,” said Silas B. “Jeepers” Ragsdale III, owner and director of Camp Stewart. “We can direct parents to the (chamber) website for places to stay, and they do a good job of keeping current with events. We use them as a resource and make business connections,” adding that he went to the Chamber Choice Awards Banquet and it made him “realize how many people haven’t seen camps.”
including archery, horseback riding, arts and crafts, canoeing, climbing, fencing, golf, outdoor cooking, riflery, tennis, swimming, basic water rescue, water skiing, tubing and ziplining. Each counselor is trained in an activity in order to help the campers develop new abilities, teach them life skills and give them the opportunity to try new things.
“We help them set goals and have success at a young age,” The camp has seven tennis courts, three soccer fields, a Jeepers said. “We try to have good instruction to teach them 440-yard track, football field, six baseball diamonds, three golf skills, not just show them. We have staff that know what greens and a large screened they’re doing.” gym with hardwood floors. For more information, visit campstewart.com. Airplanes aren’t the only leaders we build. At Mooney, we build some of the world’s fastest general aviation airplanes. They’re admired the world over, and highly regarded as leaders in their category. But we’re every bit as proud of the leadership that’s behind those airplanes. Individuals who have dedicated their careers to being the best they can be. Kellie Maletic, our marketing manager, is exactly that type of person. And we’re honored to announce she has just graduated from the Leadership Kerr County Program. Thanks to her hard work, Kellie is now on her way to becoming a leader in our community, and we will all most certainly be the better for it. Congratulations Kellie – and here’s to a very bright future ahead for you, for Mooney, and for Kerr County.
