Maybe, maybe not, as the Old Indian Story goes. Every performer has a little cartoon devil on one shoulder and a little angel on the other, one telling them to play it safe and not take any chances, the other telling them to get out there and, well, perform. Which one is in charge? Easy, as the other Old Indian Story goes. All together now – the one you feed. The trick, of course, is in knowing which is which. You’d think that’d be an easy call. Devil says go, angel says go slow, right?
Maybe, maybe not. Devils are, by job description, pretty tricky – but, hey, angels can be a little obtuse as well. One little crack and that halo can fall apart and land on either side of your head, and next thing you know you’ve got yourself some horns. Who knows? Maybe they’re one and the same – and that may be where the real madness lives. –Michael Abedin

Think you’re a film geek? If you haven’t seen the 1968 ever so British and ever so Sixties film Performance, you’ve got some homework to do. James Fox is Chas, a dapper and smooth-talking enforcer for a British crime syndicate, and a man who enjoys his work so much (he likes putting the frighteners on flash little twerps), he turns every assignment into a performance. A spot of trouble puts him on the run from both the mob and the cops, and he hides out in a palatial London flat where Mick Jagger, playing a retired rock and roll star named Turner, lives a reclusive and unorthodox life with a couple of ladies. Turner, come to find out, was at the top of the heap in the rock star biz, until one day, while he was admiring his image in his favorite mirror, he looked a little too long and hard. Poof – his demon, that little streak of something that drove audiences wild, fled him.
They’ll do that. He thinks he wants it back, but isn’t quite sure, and a battle of wills ensues with ol’ Chas, who – spoiler alert – is a handy demon surrogate. What, you might well ask, does all that have to do with a fine natural publication devoted to matters of body, mind, and spirit? Glad you asked. For starters, as of the end of this sentence, it gets things two hundred sixty-two words closer to finishing column one of a page six Intro, an important consideration when you don’t really have two columns worth of stuff to say. It’s also a good reminder that, in matters of body, mind, and spirit – in a world of illusions – we’re all just performers of one kind or another. As such, it behooves us to keep an eye on our demons. They have a way of showing up at times when we least expect them.
6
Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? Both. Not all that long after Performance wrapped (but before its release), Jagger his own self found that out at Altamont Speedway in December 1969, when his performance got away from him. The crowd, as they say, went wild, and the band had to retreat in midsong in a helicopter. The Maysles Brothers captured the proceedings in the 1970 documentary Gimme Shelter, which showed Mick in the studio watching footage from the concert – a study of a man seeing his own demons and angels, right there in front of him. The bad news? If you walk through a world of illusions, that’s how its gonna be sometimes.
The good news? If you walk through a world of illusions… well, you know the rest. Your demons can be scary things, whispering nagging fears in your ear that tell you it’s not safe to move forward, but they can also be a handy tool to get your mojo working. They can hold you back if you let them, or they can give you the kick in the butt to take a risk – sign up for an acting class, get out in front of people and sing, take that weekend intensive you know will change your life but have been putting off for what the voice in your ear tells you are perfectly good reasons. The even better news is, once you take that first step past your fears – what the samurai called moving without hesitation – the universe will rally tremendous forces to come to your aid. That’s when your demons become angels. Learn what you need to learn to have the tools and techniques to move without hesitation, and then once you step into the role, act with courage, confidence, poise, and maybe even a little swagger. Put on a good show – make it a performance.
Y ES… BUT IS IT A BUSINESS? Making art and making a living Austin is chock full of all manner of artists – musicians, writers, actors, practitioners of holistic healing arts, visual artists – and way too many of them have one thing in common.
Day jobs. Creativity may be flowing straight out of your right brain, but without some left-brain support, your art will be a hobby, something you do when you have time off from work. Visual artists can have a particularly tough time since they have usually have to find their audience, instead of the other way around. That’s where Austin’s Creative Arts Society and a national group, The Arts Business Institute, come in. Both of them provide resources that can help visual artists become creative entrepreneurs, turning their art into a business by offering education on everything from selling to corporations to setting up a booth at a show – and they’re partnering for an Austin educational intensive in October, the Austin Art Business Summit. Austin digital artist and Austin All Natural cover designer Leslie Kell is president of the Creative Arts Society, which holds regular meetings at ACC’s Pinnacle campus. “This is a first-time event for Austin, a professional development event for artists and makers.” Presentations, she says, will include: 3 Sales and Marketing Strategies 3 Pricing 3 Corporate Art 3 Art Printing 3 Wholesaling 3 Art Licensing 3 Selling Art Online Every session will include a Q&A period, lunch is included both days, and individual artist consultations are available. A Friday night reception October 20 will feature a keynote address by Austin All Natural publisher Michael Abedin – and who knows what that will be about? THE HUMAN SYSTEM Fix its form, and function follows by Michael Abedin Some of the biggest advances in blending natural, holistic, and alternative techniques into professional medical practices have come in two fields, dentistry and chiropractic. Stands to reason. Both have far more regular hands-on contact with patients than most MDs, are more likely to make repairs themselves rather than refer patients to specialists, and are usually more concerned with prevention and health maintenance.
Chiropractors, by definition, adjust body structure, function, and performance. They’ve always been on the forefront of the crossover of mainstream and alternative modalities, giving them a lot of leeway in creating, introducing, and incorporating innovative techniques. Dr. Ryan Osborne moved into advanced techniques in 2013, training under Dr. Craig Buhler, developer of the Advanced Muscle Integration Technique (AMIT) method he perfected as team chiropractor for pro basketball’s Utah Jazz for twenty-six years. AMIT identifies and corrects muscles that are functionally switched off. Since muscles are display units of body function, correcting their form allows functionality to follow (and vice versa), going deep into all body systems. AMIT gained worldwide recognition, by getting elite pro and Olympic athletes back into the game immediately after injuries, fully recovered – and performing even better. Studying in Utah also introduced Osborne to Bilateral Nasal Specific (BNS) technique. BNS unlocks and releases tension in cranial and facial bones, improving oxygen, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid flow through the brain and nervous system – essentially rebooting the brain and sinuses while decompressing joints in the head and face. “The benefits are too numerous to list, he points out, “but if I were limited to one technique, BNS would, hands down, be the one.
Not a bad foundation.

Building on those techniques and others – light-pressure Logan Basic adjustments, Impulse technique, nutritional programs, and tech tools like cold lasers and thermographic imaging – his family chiropractic practice evolved into a sophisticated, systematic approach to enhancing the performance of one of the most sophisticated systems on the planet – the human body. In a perfect world, all forms of medicine would look at the form and functionality of every system in the body and how they relate, before drugs or unnecessarily invasive techniques were prescribed – something that takes active, educated, and willing participation by practitioners and patients. It’s not a perfect world yet – but we’re getting closer. Dr. Ryan Osborne, Enhance Performance Center. (512) 255-9711, www.EnhancePerformanceCenter.com

AUTUMN EQUINOX Using Sage to Transform Energy gy by Folade Speaks Keep what is worth keeping and with the breath of kindness, blow the rest away. – Dinah Craik Coming on the heels of major energy shifts at the end of summer, the autumn equinox is a good time for clearing and transforming old energies, and smudging is a traditional tool. There are three major sage variations for smudging. White is masculine, grandfather energy. Blue is feminine, grandmother energy. Black – mugwort – is good for cleansing spirits and attachments not in your Ancestral lineage, and ideal to burn before moving your belongings into a new home. Mugwort is a third-eye opening antimicrobial, muscle soother, and awesome for footbaths. Sage comes in loose form and wand bundles. Although wands are easy to burn, it’s best to crumble sage in a mortar and pestle, and directly light a bit. Fireproof clay or shells are popular offering dishes to burn sage – something that inhibits demand for shells is best. If you reuse a whole wand over a long period, hold it over some loose, burning sage to
exorcise the icky stuff after each use, so you won’t reintroduce frequencies you’ve removed, or reconnect with debris.
Energy moves eastward. Begining in the east corner, move clockwise, or start to the left of the door, moving left. Smudge corners, closets, doors, even inside cupboards and appliances. Speak out intention, and summon any adverse energy to leave. You can buy a smudge feather or set the smoldering bundle near wind to get a good smoke. If sage is loose and in a dish, just let it smoke in its dish until it’s finished. Thank the plant for its blessing, and open the windows and doors. If sage isn’t your thing, or smells kinda funny, here are some alternatives.
Copal. Copal means incense. Copal is the earlier life years of amber – a hundred thousand years younger, it becomes amber once it reaches its prime. You may have seen huge baseballsized bits of resin and wondered, “What do I do with this?” When you have the chance to smell copal, though, all you can think about is finding a campfire so you can throw it in and astral travel from the scene. Copal is aromatic and cleansing, and it’s not shy in its ability to manifest a thorough, thick smoke, so be prepared. It’s from the medicinal Mexican Buresa tree, and has held its own as a ritual and ceremonial smudge.
Cedar. Cedar is one of the four sacred medicines, and has the same clearing properties as sage. It also acts as a restorative, and establishes a vibration of protection. Cedar can be used many ways – the bark can be bought and burned by itself, or its leaves can be found in wands, like sage. There is something very satisfying about the scent of cedar leaves.
Palo Santo. Also known as Holy Wood, and cousin to Frankincense, Palo Santo has become very popular over the last decade. Among its many forms are sticks, chips, cones, and angel carvings. Once the aroma is experienced, it becomes a staple in the smudge stash. It’s good practice to bring sweet vibrations into a space after smudging, like floral and fruit essences. Vanilla is a favorite, and amazing for the root and heart chakras. Happy clearing! Folade Speaks is an aura practitioner and energy-clearing consultant at Nature’s Treasures, offering sage, copal, and other smudging and clearing tools. www.NTRocks.com

RESEARCHING ACUPUNCTURE Why It’s Difficult by Hannah Rudolph It’s an exciting time to be an acupuncturist. It seems like every day there’s a new article about a research study showing acupuncture works. Despite this, there are still many medical professionals, scientists, and insurance companies that aren’t convinced. The World Health Organization recognizes many diseases, symptoms, and conditions for which acupuncture has proven, through control trials, to be effective, and the CDC recently came out with a list of approved treatments for chronic pain, including acupuncture. So why isn’t acupuncture being fully accepted as a legitimate form of medicine? Studies find acupuncture statistically more effective treating some aliments than western alternatives, but often not by much. It’s also shown sham acupuncture (researchers’ version of the placebo) works as well, or almost as well, as true acupuncture. While these results are in the right direction, it never seems enough to convince the medical community, researchers, or insurance companies. This is especially frustrating for the acupuncture community, because we know the big secret – acupuncture works! We also see that acupuncture, at its core, isn’t currently a good fit into scientific research methods.
Western medicine has grown up alongside scientific research methods. Doing research on western medicine works well because its very existence has been molded by the research. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), on the other hand, is entering this research world fairly new, and there are still fundamental problems with the methodology. One of the biggest is finding a way to show statistically significant differences between true acupuncture and sham acupuncture. In research, a placebo is used as a control to compare results – without it, it’s not possible to know whether the treatment had any effect. Placebos must be inert, but it’s been shown sham versions of acupuncture aren’t inert. Many acupuncture researchers compare this to researching surgery. How does one create placebo surgery? By definition, surgery is active – cutting a person open, even if nothing further is done, has an effect on patients. Same goes for acupuncture. The very act of inserting a needle has a biochemical and bioelectric effect, and because there are many styles of acupuncture, there’s no such thing as a non-active acupuncture point. While there’s more to this conversation, its purpose isn’t to discredit research that’s been done, because it does show positive results. It’s because doing research on acupuncture is so important to the future of TCM in the US. We must think outside the box to create a truly significant way of proving its effects.
If you’re interested in trying acupuncture, find a practitioner that fits you. Acupuncture is as beautiful in its complexity as each human is in theirs. Part of what makes it different and special is it treats each patient as a completely unique mosaic. No two are alike – and neither are its practitioners. Personality, style, technique and the practitioner’s own energetic system can all have an effect on the success of a treatment. Think of it like finding the right therapist, or even romantic partner – sometimes you have to go through a few mismatches before you find a good fit. In the US, we’ve grown up implicitly trusting western medicine, which likes things to be black and white – this pill works, this one doesn’t. But life, and the human body, isn’t black and white. Western medicine shouldn’t be discredited, but when it comes to the existence of the gray areas, it needs to learn to become more flexible. Science never deals in absolutes. That’s one of its core principles. Perhaps western medicine has become a world of absolutes because of marketing, insurance companies, or doctors wanting to give patients solace. Whatever the reason, it’s not a real world. More people are starting to experience that, part of the reason they’re questioning it and seeking out medicine that can work in gray areas – like Traditional Chinese Medicine. It’s been around for about four thousand years. How would it have lasted so long if it didn’t work? Hannah Rudolph is a licensed acupuncturist and owner of Terra Nera, a Traditional Chinese Medical practice offering acupuncture, personalized herbal formulations, Asian bodywork, and nutritional support. Ca C an h holi olistic d de entistry help? by Dr. Dr. Matthew Mat atth thew ew Carpenter, Car arpe pent en ntter, r, D DDS, D ,N DS NMD MD MD In h his b bookk Nutrition and d Physical h l Degeneration, Westin Price demonstrated that when a mother ate processed foods, it contributed to negative craniofacial development in a child. This meant changes in food quality were translating to actual changes in facial bone development and health of the following generation – those children had more crowded teeth and less effective airways than children born of mothers still on their ancestral diet, resulting in more oral disease. It also led to health challenges related to an inability to move air properly through the nose. Three or four generations away from the time Dr. Price did this research, how much more can we expect children’s bites and airways to be affected by toxins that mothers and children experienced in utero?
We’re talking about obstructive sleep apnea, a breathing problem related to the structure of the nose, palate, jaws, and airways. There are other types of apnea, but we’re focusing on airway problems related to a blockage or obstruction, resulting in a child’s brain and body not receiving enough oxygen. Apnea in defined as when a child stops breathing for at least ten seconds, whereas hypopnea is when breathing only partially stops, but there’s a drop in oxygen saturation, or oxygen levels in the blood. Children are organized according to episodes per hour – mild, moderate, or severe. Currently, the only way to diagnose a child is with a polysomnogram (PSG) – commonly known as a sleep study – typically performed by a neurologist.
It’s estimated over ninety percent of obstructive sleep apnea cases are undiagnosed. Some outward behavioral signs include learning disabilities, developmental problems, behavioral problems, heart problems, high blood pressure, and obesity. Since there’s lack of oxygen saturation and less oxygen to the brain, there’s daytime sleepiness or hyperactivity, lost cognitive ability, and a maybe child lagging behind in many areas of development or becoming frustrated and depressed. Other common presentations for children with sleep apnea are chronic mouth breathing, narrow jaws, dry lips, abnormal swallowing, and consistently swollen, enlarged tonsils. Sometimes they’ll have dark circles under the eyes from venous pooling, related to mouth breathing. Many times children with obstructive sleep apnea will grind their teeth excessively and snore loudly, have restless sleep, or experience nightmares, night terrors, or bedwetting from lowered oxygen levels while sleeping. When children are mouth breathers, it suggests nasal breathing is obstructed, causing the tongue to sit on the
12
floor off the fl h mouth h instead d off against the h palate, as in nasal breathing. This tongue position actually affects a child’s normal head and neck development. Questions for parents suspecting sleep apnea. Other factors. Besides the negative impact of nutrition, factors like breastfeeding, thumb sucking, and chewing have a big impact on proper development of bony structures of the face. Breastfeeding encourages mandibular development, strengthening jaw muscles as the tongue, lower lip, and mandible move in concert to draw the nipple into the mouth. Drinking through a bottle, there’s more forceful sucking, causing cheeks to draw in, putting pressure on gums and teeth and affecting tooth position. While most people think removing tonsils and adenoids is the best solution for improving a child’s airway, research shows up to seventy-five percent of children who have tonsils and adenoids removed still develop obstructive sleep apnea. Myofunctional therapy is another way of improving obstructed airways, shown to improve oxygenation in both pediatric patients and adults. Sometimes surgery may be indicated, but I support conservative treatment plans for children and provide consultations for parents interested in understanding how obstructive sleep apnea may affect their child. I don’t always perform all treatment, but do act as a source for information and support for patients seeking safe, natural solutions to dental problems. ALKALINE AND ALKALIZED WATER What’s the difference?
by Margie Captain In Texas, just because it’s September doesn’t mean summer is ending, so drinking lots of water is as important as ever. So is drinking the right water, water that increases the alkaline level of your pH factor. You may think you’re drinking alkaline water by putting alkaline drops in your water, but is that the same thing? The answer is an overwhelming no.
Not all alkaline waters are the same. There are two types of alkaline water – alkaline water that’s been chemically induced, and alkalized water (the best choice), that’s been electrically induced. When water is ionized, or has been electrically induced, it contains a negative charge called Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), making it rich in oxygen and alkalinity. It also contains millions of natural antioxidant bubbles called hydroxyl ions, that have one oxygen and one hydrogen atom, meaning they can bond easily with oxidizing free radicals in the body. Chemically induced alkaline water has synthetic minerals added – minerals put into the water by powder or drops – and there’s no negative charge to it, meaning it’s not microclustered. The molecules are too big to hydrate the cell, and it’s not able to flush out acid buildup in your cells. Electrically induced alkalized water has all three properties – the negative charge, alkalinity, and micro-clustering. It has the ability to flush out acid buildup in your seventy-five trillion cells, which will put your body in a slightly alkaline environment for better health. Electrically induced alkalized water has ionic minerals bonded to each OH ion. This is important, as it makes one of the best sources of antioxidants you can put in your body for a healthy immune system.

How do you prove this? By using an ORP meter that will measure the water for either a negative charge or a positive charge. If it reads positive, it’s acidic to your body. In other words, you’re poisoning yourself slowly – which is another word for aging. To drink the right water, there’s one thing you have to know – all waters are not the same. hat are you afraid to do?
Whether Wh W het eth he e you want to speak in public, open a new business, bu usi sine n ss ne ss, talk tal alkk to to potential pote ot dates, do stand-up comedy, climb a mountain -- or anything hi you haven’t h ’ done d before --you’re bound to feel fear and want to overcome it.
Well, how do you do it? Photos by Daran Herman
After recording six studio albums of songs, my Band of Legends politely nudged me to perform live. While I’ve spoken on stage numerous times over the decades, I never sang on stage. Thinking about it brought up serious fears. Even terror. A friend remembers me saying I would never sing in public. I had to overcome panic attacks, anxiety ambushes, and near nervous breakdowns to overcome the fear of public speaking. But public singing? Forget it. I didn’t even sing in the shower. Childhood memories of being humiliated when I tried to speak or sing stayed with me. I overcame the speaking one. But I refused to even touch singing. It felt too vulnerable. But I did it. And it was a huge success. I was strong and confident, owned the stage, and led my Band of Legends into a triumphant performance. It was a historic moment. It was a personal breakthrough. And it will live forever in my mind as a moment of greatness for me. So, how did I go from terrified to terrific? I’ll share my own process, as it will illustrate how you can overcome fear, too. I of course did all the standard things that I teach, from practicing ho’oponopono (as I wrote about in my books, Zero Limits and AT Zero) to rehearsing in the studio and in my mind. But two months before the show…

A basic rule of self-improvement is this – you can accomplish more if you have someone who believes in you almost more than you believe in yourself. I first saw that insight in the home of Jerry and Esther Hicks, of Abraham fame, decades ago. Jerry (who has passed on, and whom I greatly miss) told me he first heard it in an early television western. I don’t recall the name of the show, but I do remember the impact the principle had on me. I started Miracles Coaching more than a decade ago for that reason, to give people someone who could believe in them. I’ve had a lot of people support me, coach me, and believe in me as a performer. Jen Sincero is a badass author of two NY Times bestselling books, You Are A Badass and the recent You Are A Badass at Making Money. I discovered her first book years ago, knew it woiuld be a hit, and interviewed her. We stayed in touch. I had lunch with Jen when she came to Austin for a book signing. I knew she had been in a band at one point, so I told her my dilemma. She told me that I had already done the hard part of singing. “You sang for Melissa Etheridge,” she explained, referring to when I had a private songwriting lesson with the rock icon last November. “Singing one on one is harder than singing on stage, and you sang for an icon you idolize and adore.” The last time I saw Melissa Etheridge, just for a moment after her show in San Antonio in June, she told me she loves my latest album, The Great Something. She said to “Keep at it.” I dedicated that album to her. There’s a song on it I wrote for her. Her encouragement helped me stay motivated. She once told me, “Feel the fear, and do it anyway.”
Sarah McSweeney is a singer-songwriter who is on my first album, Blue Healer. She was the first person I sang for. We met and she told me she always feels nervous before getting on stage. But she thinks of herself as a messenger, not a singer. That reframe made the idea of singing easier. “I am a messenger,” she said. “I focus on the song’s message.” That insight helped me drop the idea of being a singer and adopt the idea of being a messenger. It helped me relax a little. Meghan Sandau is a new friend. She has promoted big music events. She wanted to see me do a concert. She said she likes my music. Her belief in me helped make me more secure. In fact, none of this performing gig would happen without her. She set up the event for my Band of Legends to perform. She held my hand and encouraged me. She received emails from me, explaining my terror at performing, and wrote me comforting words of wisdom. Meghan also suggested I do an energy clearing session with Nicole Pigeault of Los Angeles. I love energy work and do clearings for others so I leapt at the chance to hire Nicole to do one for me. Turned out to be one of the most powerful esoteric cleansings ever. The hour session helped me release fears and settle into confidence. Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon has been coaching me for years now. We’ve made numerous instrumental albums together, such as Invoking Divinity. He stayed in my corner, listening to me rehearse, listening to me confide my fears, and urging me to hang in there. Then there’s Patrick Stark in Canada. He’s a filmmaker making a movie about overcoming fear. It’s called One Life: No Regrets. He interviewed me for it. He plans to sing on stage with the band U2. But it will be the first time he’ll sing on stage ever. Imagine it. The first time you sing in public anywhere is on stage with U2 and thousands watching. Well, if Patrick can
drum up that kind of courage, then so can I. Right? I found preparing for the event mainly a battle with my mind. Most of my thinking was negative. It was all, “What if it goes bad?” But Mindy Audlin came to visit. She teaches what if up thinking. She wrote the book What If it All Goes Right? She coached me in other ways to think – what if it’s a breeze? What if I love it? So the first thing I did was gather people who could coach and inspire me. Next…
I got educated. To prepare for my show, I attended an online Masterclass with David Mamet, and another with Usher. Both were astoundingly good. Mamet is a Pulitzer prize-winning playwright and screenwriter. I think he’s a genius. He said most people are afraid to be bad to be good. You have to be bad first to start being good. You have to start someplace. I reminded myself of this as I prepared for the live event. While I wanted to step out on stage and be “perfect,” Mamet reminded me that I’ll probably step out and be bad. But bad is where you start. You can’t get to great without starting at bad. Usher said to prepare, to be confident, but to expect something to go wrong. Don’t expect perfection. He told a story of a performance where he injured himself at the beginning of a two-hour show, and had to keep dancing and singing despite the pain. His insights and pointers were priceless in helping me create a mindset for success. And I bought a set of audios called The Relaxed Musician. It’s a fourteen-day course in exploring limiting beliefs. It helped me realize I had a big belief that if I looked bad as a
15
performer, it would hurt my reputation in other areas, such as an author or speaker. But like most beliefs, it didn’t hold up. I could forget all my lyrics and totally wash out on stage and it wouldn’t even dent my image anywhere else. Most people forgive and forget. In fact, a miss on stage could give me a terrific story about how I bombed and lived.
I didn’t stop there. I read a wonderful book on overcoming fear and panic, titled You 1, Anxiety 0. Author Jodi Aman helped take the mask off of fear so I could see what it really was, an illusion. I soaked up the wisdom in this book. It really helped me. I also read a 1950 book by Vernon Howard called Word Power. It was about how the way you talk to yourself, as well as to others, effects your behavior and your results. It’s not so much affirmations but self-talk. Pretending you’re fearless by saying “I am a fearless performer” is a way to begin being a fearless performer. And I read a recent book, called Succeed. It explained that just visualizing success is a plan for failure unless you also visualize planning for setbacks, too. In other words, thinking the show will go without a flaw is not realistic, as Usher pointed out. There is no such thing as perfection. But visualizing success, and understanding there’s work to do to get there, can almost guarantee the result you want. That was a mind-spinning insight. I did more, too.
I got Nevillized. I wrote out a script of how I wanted the show to go. I focused on my feelings, not anyone else’s, so I could focus on what I could control. The script was a type of Nevillizing, which I write about in my book The Attractor Factor – feeling as if the event already happened, and happened the way I envisioned it. I didn’t visualize the show happening, I visualized that the show already happened. Big difference. I wrote the script from the point of view of the next day, after I performed on stage. I read it every day, felt the exciting emotions of success, and visualized that the event was a hit.
16
I got relaxed. I got massages, I got plenty of rest, I drank lots of water, and I went into a flotation tank at The Zero Gravity Institute for ninety minutes the day before the show. I was doing whatever I could to be at peak form when I stepped on stage. I was taking care of my body and mind. I even bought a tailor-made suit to help me feel more empowered.
I got faith. Faith doesn’t always mean something religious. Faith in yourself, faith in other people, faith in my practice and prep, faith in my Band of Legends – all of it gives a level of confidence that allows the best to surface. As a slogan I coined says, “It is what you accept.” I accepted that the moment would be perfect, even in any imperfections. I let go. I trusted. I knew The Great Something would guide my way.
And what happened? My Band of Legends and I performed July 21st at The Townsend in Austin. I’m the luckiest musician alive to have a band of this caliber – Drummer Joe Vitale (yes, same name as mine), bass man Glenn Fukunaga, and lead guitarist Daniel Barrett. These incredible musicians encouraged me, supported me, and brought my songs to life. We raised the roof and tore down the walls. We shook the earth and wowed the crowd. It wasn’t perfect – but it was fantastic! At the end of our set, we got a standing ovation. (A standing ovation!) Now, what do you fear that it’s time for you to do? Isn’t today a good day to begin? Dr. Joe and his Band of Legends have a new album out next month, No Words. See www.store.cdbaby.com/Artist/ JoeVitale1 or www.AllHeaingMusic.com for albums and updates. What’s Your Energy?
by Caroleen oleen Thompson
Energy Medicine refers to many forms of therapies that depend upon energy of various forms, and includes practices such as Healing Touch, Qigong, Reiki, acupuncture and acupressure, Ortho-bionomy, sound waves, color frequencies, and others. There are theoretical frameworks on how energy medicine works in the literature of quantum physics and holistic healing. The exact physics mechanisms cannot be definitively described at this time, however, due to the use of subtle energies and the lack of scientific ability to measure them. Numerous related studies on Energy Medicine and consciousness indicate strong support that something is happening, and that recipients respond positively to energy therapies. Theoretically, by correcting any defects in the energy field, energy therapy practices may facilitate healing of the body, mind, and spirit. Energy therapies focus on removing energy congestion that forms in our bioenergy fields and energy centers. Once these imbalances and disturbances are cleared, the energy channels resume their task of integrating the body, mind, and soul to restore health and promote healing. It may also help to prevent future issues by restoring balance to energy field disturbances, which could later result in illness if left unbalanced. Energy Medicine is the oldest, organic, instinctive, and effective form of healthcare that exists. It exists in every country, in every community, and it has existed since we were first living in collective groups or tribes.

It triggers your own healing system, which is called homeostasis. – Deepak Chopra Homeostasis is what tells your body to create an antibody when you have an infection, or a clot when you fall so you don’t bleed to death. Energy Medicine stimulates, activates, and assists the innate biological intelligence of the body. The body knows how to heal from flu, cuts, bruises and broken bones, and is by nature designed to be well. Our life experiences – which may include long-term stress, loss, grief, illness, divorce – create blockages that disrupt this natural flow of energy in our bodies. Cellular biologist James Oschman has said, “In the current era of rapid scientific progress, many of the concepts we were absolutely certain about twenty years ago are no longer true at all. But of all the tales of exploration and discovery that could be told, none is more fascinating than the story of the human energy field. In a few decades, scientists have gone from a conviction that there is no such thing as energy fields in and around the

Walking in Beauty by Christina Allen A million things call out to be done before the day ends, and then it all starts up again tomorrow. Your life has routine, a rhythm, and it sweeps you up and pushes you along. You have a roof over your head and food to eat, so on you persevere, feeding the beast, doing what it takes – but ultimately, it sucks a little bit of life from you each day. Even when we do stop and take a breath, we’re most often thinking about what comes next, or how to improve on what we already have. We go to a yoga class to relax, and find ourselves needing to master that next yoga pose, or we sit down to meditate and wonder if we’ve reached the furthest dimension of the astral planes yet. We are doers, living lives aimed at accomplishment, and we’re striving for success.
Until we stop and find the beauty in it, however, we will have very little peace. Beauty is not just an aesthetic, it’s a vibration, the resonance inside of a moment. It’s a sensation that stops us in our tracks with its radiance and transports us to another realm. It’s inspiration, an experience of pure essence, a transient state of breathless perfection that exists just outside of time. Integrating positivity with negativity, a wholeness of darkness and light, beauty is a transcendent dance with the senses. Lying in wait, hoping you will stop and take her in, Beauty is in that gentle waft of breeze caressing your unsuspecting face. She’s that lingering moment between notes in a haunting melody. When we take a moment to slow down and take her in – not just look at her, or through her, but stop and take her in – time stands still. She can transport us into someplace magical and mystical, something outside the doer’s realm. Beauty touches our soul. She feeds and nourishes it. She is pure nectar. When we can meld and vibrate with her essence, we temporarily step out of the purposefulness of our human operating systems, and remember our eternity.
18
Even in the most unlikely places we can find her. Light finds its way into all kinds of corners, and it dances with all kinds of darkness. It’s these very contrasts that inspire our awe, that take our breath away. You can find her in a crumpled plastic bag, dancing with a gust of wind, or in the sparkle of broken windshield glass on the rutted city sidewalk. You can even see her deep within the eyes of an old wrinkled face. Feeding our souls is just as important as feeding our bodies. What time do you take out of your day to refill your coffers? Are you always running around meeting your goals, or do you take a moment, from time to time, to remember who you truly are? Did you come here solely to work yourself to the bone, or raise a family? Or did you came here to experience your essence, though taking form? Stop, use your senses. Smell those roses, let their scent draw you in to the expression of your own essence. Can you remember who you are, and have always been? Taking in beauty creates expansion. Rather than suppression of the negative, it’s a pure expression of essence. When we can stop and let awe catch our breath, we feed that eternal part of ourselves. We must take these precious moments, as they come, to reset. In connecting with the essence of something beautiful, not just looking at it, lifetimes can pass in a moment. Stepping back in, everything is new and fresh. We are full, fed, energized, and ready to begin again. Take in a moment to be. Walk in Beauty! Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). ZACH Theatre Sep. 27-Oct. 29
by Michael Abedin In 1932, Austin was a city of some 53,000 souls, a tad more than the current enrollment at UT, and Lamar Boulevard was mostly a residential neighborhood. The Colorado River was still a ways from becoming either Town Lake or Lady Bird Lake, and just south of the river off South Lamar, the city built the Austin Civic Theatre. In 1968, it became Zachary Scott Theatre Center in honor of the local homeboy who’d died a few years earlier, after a Hollywood career as a dapper ne’er-do-well. It got a brand-new main theatre in 2011, shortened and uppercased its name to ZACH, and is a slice of Austin history – sort of a bookend to the Broken Spoke, on the other end of the condo canyons of S. Lamar. Starting its eighty-fifth season, ZACH is one of the ten oldest continuously operating theatre centers in the nation, and the oldest in Texas – and it’s celebrating its anniversary season with a Broadway musical based on a classic MGM film released in 1952, when Zach Scott himself was at the peak of his film career. Singin’ in the Rain is (listen carefully) a revival of a Broadway play that was once a London play based on a movie about a movie made when movies first became talkies.

Not every silent film star made the transition to sound when it turned out they didn’t have the vocal chops. Singin’ is the story of a diva whose voice had all the lyrical charm of Archie Bunker, the chorus girl who did her singing for her behind the scenes, and the classic meet-cute of said chorus girl and the diva’s leading man and reluctant love interest, Gene Kelly. Olympic athletes and NFL running backs could do worse than study the moves of guys like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, and Kelly’s splashy (literally, in the literal sense of literally) tap dance on a rain-soaked sidewalk after his first kiss from Debbie Reynolds has become an iconic bit of American entertainment. (Stanley Kubrick did a chilling takeoff on it, as a bit of the old ultra-violence in 1971’s A Clockwork Orange.) September’s a good month for rain in Austin – grab an umbrella, tap dance over to the ZACH. Showtimes and ticket info: www.ZachTheatre.org

DREAM PATTERNS
Revealing the Hidden Patterns of Our Waking Lives
Condensed from the book by Jonson Miller Dreams are bizarre. There’s no way around it. Because of this, they’re inherently interesting. Dreams can teach us about the nature of consciousness, reveal personal and universal truths through symbolic language, and enable us to make lasting changes. Dream dictionaries encourage us to interpret individual dreams in isolation and interpret each individual image, but here’s too much noise in our dreams for this approach to provide valuable interpretations on a consistent basis. Nor have I gained the most from my dreams by trying, in the psychoanalytical manner, to interpret all of my dreams as either expressions of unconscious desires or universal archetypes. What allowed me to create change in my life was: t 3FDPHOJ[JOH QFSTPOBM QBUUFSOT PG JNBHFT BOE UIFNFT JO my dreams. t 3FDPHOJ[JOH QBUUFSOT JO XBLJOH MJGF UIFZ SFQSFTFOU t 8PSLJOH UP DIBOHF UIPTF XBLJOH MJGF QBUUFSOT
My dreams changed then as well, confirming the changes I made in my waking life. Images, people, and themes repeat themselves in dreams over a period of time – a particular cluster of individuals or types of people (uniformed authorities, monsters, laborers) and a particular cluster of places (an old family home, forests, institutions). It’s these recurring elements we need to note and interpret. These patterns may sometimes be literal, recurring dreams that occur in an identical or nearly identical way each time, but usually they’re not. Repeating elements tend to occur in a variety of combinations and contexts to produce unique dreams each night, so patiently record your dreams over a period of time to reveal the patterns. These elements recur because of ongoing behaviors and stimuli within our waking lives, and our unconscious minds. Our dream patterns point us to those stimuli, enabling us to recognize them. Having recognized them, if they are unhelpful behaviors or attitudes, we can then adopt new, more skillful behaviors and attitudes.
You may dream of certain elements because you frequently experience them in your waking life. On the other hand, I was surprised to find how few commonplace elements of my waking life appear in my dreams. Many recurring elements of dreams may not draw from our immediate waking lives. Some of mine are from my childhood, or other long-past events. Other elements are seemingly inexplicable. Regardless of their origins, take note of the patterns and where they come from in your experiences. Having recognized dream patterns, you can then recognize the waking-life patterns they point to. The relationship between the two isn’t always – or even often –
24
obvious. As a teenager, I frequently dreamt of hostile, fanged animals. The obvious expression of fear and anxiety didn’t make sense to me, since, at the time, I believed myself to be rather happy and content. The pattern in my dreams prompted me to look for fear and anxiety in my waking life. The more I looked, the more of it I found.
Dream patterns drawn from commonplace things in your waking life can be difficult to interpret. That’s because they may not be literal references. Dreams must draw on something to build themselves, and often use the commonplace – but they may use those commonplace elements to represent something else, something we are unaware of. Identify and interpret dream patterns, reflect on how those patterns are playing out in your waking life, and be aware of actual moments in the day when they’re operating. When you’re conscious of those moments, you can control how you respond. As you dissolve patterns, look for confirmation of your efforts in your changing dream patterns. I don’t entirely dismiss the value of individual dreams. I occasionally experience individual dreams with profound meaning. These dreams, ones Carl Jung called “big dreams, are packed with mythological elements and generally occur at times of major change. Those dreams, however, are rare and precious. The greatest benefit from dreams comes from the persistent and long-term study of dream patterns that enable us to dissolve unhelpful waking-life patterns, and replace them with more skillful ways of living. FATIGUE WARRIOR by Angela Watson Robertson Our daily lives often leave us depleted, pulled in so many different directions we have no time left for ourselves. We give to everyone else, and don’t have any energy left at the end of the day. When you have chronic low energy, life becomes frustrating, exhausting. If you’re overwhelmed with work, family, or marriage, it’s likely all you want to do is read a good book and have a hot bath without someone demanding something from you. Your calendar’s jam-packed with events, to-do’s, calls, errands – and you can’t take it anymore. To top it off, your body’s showing signs of being overwhelmed – exhausted, fatigued all day regardless of how much sleep you get, craving coffee and sugar, and you sense something isn’t right. You’re not well. It’s likely you were told you have adrenal fatigue, and don’t know where to start to get well. You’re not alone.
What is adrenal fatigue? Due to fast-paced, stress-filled modern lives, over eighty percent of us will experience adrenal fatigue, when the adrenal glands – small lumps of tissue directly above your kidneys – become triggered. The primary trigger is stress. Adrenal glands produce hormones critical for wellbeing – adrenaline, cortisol, and hormones regulating production of estrogen and testosterone. When adrenal glands are triggered and over-extended, they produce extra hormones. This is an extraordinary survival mechanism if you’re in danger, but over a long period of divorce, bankruptcy, death of a loved one, or some major crisis, they eventually become damaged from being hyperactive.
Symptoms. If you have adrenal fatigue, you may experience weakness, lack of energy, trouble concentrating, easily confused, forgetful, trouble completing basic tasks you could once handle easily, hoarse voice, poor digestion, constipation, depression, insomnia, not feeling rested after waking from sleep, relying on naps during the day. You don’t have to feel this way. Reduce stress, eliminate toxins, avoid negative thinking, revitalize your body. Recovery is possible, yet may take patience and a change in lifestyle. The sooner you get started on the road to wellness, the sooner you’ll start feeling better and restoring adrenals to full health. Don’t despair – you can take a number of concrete steps to heal your adrenals.
Gradually remove foods that tax adrenals. These include caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, soda, processed and microwaved foods, and hydrogenated oils.
Add nutrient-dense foods to your diet. These include coconut, olives, avocados, cruciferous vegetables, fatty fish like wild-caught salmon, chicken, turkey, walnuts, almonds, pumpkin, chia, and flax seeds, kelp, and Celtic, Himalayan, or sea salt.
Eat light, balanced meals. Large meals with long stretches in between aren’t helpful when adrenals are overextended. Ninety minutes to two hours after you eat, your bloodstream runs low on glucose, and adrenal glands are forced to produce hormones like cortisol to keep you going. If you frequently go for long stretches without eating, your adrenal glands are under constant strain, and you’re not giving them a chance to recuperate.
Reduce stress. Rest as much as possible. If you can, sleep until nine. (79am is important for adrenal repair). Get more laughter and fun, practice deep belly breathing, exercise regularly – even just walking. Minimize work and relation stress, and avoid negative people and negative self-talk. If you’ve experienced trauma, seek coaching, therapy, or counseling. Create a lifestyle that helps you avoid adrenal fatigue. All of us experience emotionally and physically intense and stressful times – it’s important to give your body adequate time to recover. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, I’m curious about how the higher self functions. If someone is doing energy healing, is your higher self receiving the energy healing first before it gets to you, or how does that work? Jan, 60, Austin, TX Dear Jan, Thank you for asking about the Higher Self. Actually, the High Self is about a billion times beyond the Soul. Many people who think they are hearing their master teacher are actually hearing from their high self. The high self is called the Alchemical State, which is the beautiful and perfect body that we have on the Other Side. When the High Self thinks that the individual is ready for their Master Teacher, they call the Teacher in to view the Earthling. At that time the teacher may start speaking or not. One cannot tell the difference between the high self and the master teacher. When you are healing, the high self does not respond. However, the soul’s evolution responds to the energy of the “Disciple in Training”. You, for example, are guided by Lord Maitreya. So don’t worry about the high self. Just think of Maitreya and he will be there, in you and through you for the rest of this incarnation. He is your highest master teacher, and your angel is Uriel. Dear Ashtara, Signs tell me the roads to let go of, but I have no clear signs of what I should pursue in life or career to get to the next level I dream of. I’m new to the area and a stay at home mom for thirteen years. A.W., 50, Round Rock, TX Dear A.W., When you were born, your angel, Gabriel, decided you were suited to be a lawyer or architect, which is our favorite. As far as a career now to get to the next level, try working for an architect and see if you could eventually get a license. You still have thirtyplus years to work. Check it out. You would be great. Your high teacher is Sandalfon and your angel is Gabriel. Dear Ashtara, I believe my wife may be unfaithful. I have absolutely no reason to think this is true, but I just don’t trust her. Should I be unfaithful, too, or just get a divorce? Nolz, 24, Austin, TX

Dear Nolz, You should never suspect unfaithfulness until you check it out. If they are unfaithful, perhaps you can help them. Hopefully, this will not end in a divorce. You are very young and many married couples in their infancy struggle. Therefore, be the rock for her with an understanding heart. Try to get to the bottom of it and tell her why you suspect. At that time, you can develop your own scenario. Don’t worry, I feel like everything is cool. Your Master Teacher is Ashtar, and your Guardian Angel is Michael. Dear Ashtara, I’ve heard you mention Master Racuzzi and Uriel and I’d like to know more about them. Nancy, Temple, TX Dear Nancy, Master Racuzzi is a United Christos who became an unusual deity because of the amount of vision he would hold for Earth. The Elders recognized him as a very high teacher and master when Earth inhabited its first people. He is an entire Rapture in himself because of the Triad held within his Ashram, which consists of Abraham, Michael and Uriel. Racuzzi is atoning to you on a daily basis. Never be without his picture and honor it. Uriel is one of the four Ark of the Covenant Archangels birthed to assist with the birth of our God. They are like the four quadrants and four winds which came in to swirl around Mother Mary, The Godhead, and others to birth our precious Deity and God. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone) that include psychic, medical, profound healings, questions answered and more. Stripping Away the
Stigma by Zaeli Kane
Consider the image of an empty stage. Better yet, a pole. Without the dancer’s touch, it’s sturdy but static. Only with the strength and grace of a uniquely human magic – our motion, our erotic nature – can they transform the feeling of a room. Some nonverbal performance acts are honored as legitimate art forms. The ballerina, gymnast, and mime are lauded for their hypnotic quality, yet the wholesale dismissal of exotic dance is so common as to be cliché. The vocation of stripper is the ultimate taboo, condemning a woman’s moral character, if not her parents’ rearing.
There’s a movement to confront that stereotype head on, lead by women and for women. “Exotic dance brought me to all the right places,” says Sophie Murphy, who began her career on the pole to curb student debt pursuing a Theatre and Dance degree at UT. On the job, she discovered a rare opportunity to dictate dynamics between herself and clients. “As the dancer, I have the capacity to say yes or no. How often can you do that at work, walk away if that’s what feels right?” Sophie is co-owner of a pole and dance fitness studio, the force and face of an aerial cabaret presenting monthly showcases, and informally consults students who advance from hobbyists into part-time or professional exotic dance. A person who goes into a strip club is experiencing some type of hunger, seeking relief from stress, or feelings of inadequacy, rejection, and invisibility. They’re managing a repression of their natural appetites for sexual stimulation and fantasy, seeking an escape from the pressures and indifference of the outside world. While paying for exotic dance (or even sexual touch) isn’t a complete or long-term cure for loneliness, overwork, and the vilification of libido, it does offer a service – a form of energy work. It has the power to conduct an atmosphere of perceived connection, at least enough to allow some type of energetic release. As with any modality, the release may be addictive rather than fully healing, but it has the potential to expose what it is that requires attention – in many cases, simply the reality of primal desires. Dancers persevere against the resistance of gravity, judgment, self-doubt, and the pole itself. The proof is in the applause, and dazzling an audience. If that isn’t the work of an artist, what is?
