A Letter to Our Readers Work on the May issue of a fine natural magazine while apparently every freakin’ planet in the universe is in retrograde, and you learn a lot about yourself – including how many colorful expletives you can string together in one breath. As usual, Mercury is the ringleader, disrupting every form of electronic and person-to-person communication. Some say it’s a time to go inward for a few weeks, go with the flow – which usually lasts about forty-eight hours, until you’re ready to throw your laptop through the window to make a hole big enough to toss your phone through.

A modest proposal. Put all the nukes on the planet into one giant missile, aim it at Mercury, and blow the little bugger right into the sun. No one will miss it. Gravity might be off a bit but, hey, new sports records might be set. An added bonus would be total nuclear disarmament, with the possible side effect of world peace. Beauty queens would have to have something other than world peace to wish for, but that’s a small price to pay. –Michael Abedin
How can “self-help songs,” well – help your self? My six singer-songwriter albums all contain original tunes of song therapy. They often contain positive messages of motivation, transformation, and inspiration. It’s my way of helping you through challenges and tough times with songs of encouragement. In many ways, the songs are coaches, in lyrical form. Let me explain how you can use self-help songs, like the ones on The Great Something, in your life.
The Hook When you’re facing a situation where someone or something is about to set you off, take a breath. The self-help song The Hook (on the One More Day album) contains the message don’t take the hook! It’s a reminder that you don’t have to take the bait. In general, whenever you get upset, it’s when you go unconscious. Something or someone flipped your internal switch and you got mad or sad. The song Don’t Take the Hook is your reminder that you have choice – you don’t have to get engaged or outraged. You can always walk away. You can even walk away singing don’t take the hook!
The Glad Game But if you do take the hook and find yourself upset, you can always play The Glad Game to recover. I wrote this selfhelp song because of the famous book, Pollyanna (still one of the best Law of Attraction books you could read today, first published in 1913), and the many movie adaptations of it. The Glad Game, on The Great Something album, is your reminder that you can find the good in any situation or person. You may really have to look. But it’s always there – always. (By the way, here’s how Eleanor H. Porter, the author of Pollyanna, put it: There is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it.) This upbeat swingrock-dance song can show you the way.
Look for the Light One way to find the good, or play The Glad Game, is to Look For the Light. This self-help song, also on The Great
6
Something album, is a reminder that there is light (or good, or glad, or positive) in any and every situation. This song was born when someone asked me how to handle political fighting and opinion conflicts that split people. I spontaneously said, “Look for the light.” There are always people doing good things, and good causes you can find and support. But you may need to pause and look for it.
Empowerment You’ll find yet another way to use lyrics as affirmations in the self-help song Empowerment on the album The Healing Song This instrumental cried out for my voice, so I allowed inspiration to guide me in speaking hypnotic commands of inner strength. Listening to this track alone can strengthen your mental core, so you can have, do, or be, whatever you imagine and work toward. I listen to this song every time it shuffles up on my playlist. It’s powerful.
There’ll Be Days After my private songwriting lesson with rock legend Melissa Etheridge, all my music became more focused. The self-help song There’ll Be Days (also on the latest album, The Great Something) is my favorite song for conveying wisdom in a traditional singer-songwriter folk format. It’s a reminder that some days will be tough, and some will be tender, but you can get through them all if you smile and remember this song. I know it doesn’t sound humble at all, but I think this song is pure genius. (At least I can’t stop listening to it. It’s hauntingly beautiful.)
The Great Something When you need to be reminded that you aren’t alone, and that the dark night of the soul will pass, you might listen to the newest album’s title track, The Great Something. This self-help song was directly inspired by my lesson with Melissa Etheridge. She advised me to write in the first person. I took her advice to heart and wrote the most personal, raw, and revealing song of my life so far. I listened to it just before writing this, to remind myself that The Great Something – what others might call the Divine, Universe, Nature, Gaia, or something else – is with you always.
Some Thoughts Everybody has thoughts, but not everybody knows they are not their thoughts. The self-help song Some Thoughts, on the One More Day album, is an upbeat tune reminding you that some thoughts serve you, and some thoughts suck. But you can play the jukebox in your mind, and just select a different song/thought at any time.
You Gotta The self-help song You Gotta (on the album titled Sun Will Rise) is a pep talk in song. With saxophone, guitar and an upbeat drum (by the drummer with the same name as me), this one is designed to urge you to get up, get moving, and move toward your dreams. You gotta dream, dare, grow and go is an affirmation and command. After all, any dream you want to attract requires movement from you, as life is a co-creation.

Everybody’s Going thru Something The most popular music video I’d ever created is the one made to breathe life into the self-help song, Everybody’s Going thru Something (on my very first album, Strut!). I wrote this song to remind us that we all have dreams, and we all have pains. If we can be more understanding, we can bring more peace to the world. (See the music video at the end of this post.)
Remember The smoky-bluesy-jazzy self-help song Remember (on the album Reflection) is a hypnotic-poetic ballad revealing the creativity technique I used to make numerous albums. The technique is called The Remembering Process, and my producer Daniel Barrett and I wrote a book explaining it called, naturally enough, The Remembering Process. With baritone saxophone and a smooth groove, this spoken word song offers you another way to enjoy creativity. For some reason, I want to call this song really hip.

Ho–oh. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east Any day now, any day now I shall be released. – Bob Dylan, I Shall Be Released
Once upon a time, a spiritual teacher and Middle East rabble rouser was asked by one of his followers how many times you should forgive your brother – seven, maybe? No, the follower was told. Seventy times seven. Good advice, but if you’re up to about four hundred eighty-eight or nine and counting the moments (and forgiveness opportunities) until you reach seventy times seven and can let your brother have it, you’re sort of missing the point. Like a lot of the stories in spiritual texts, it’s a metaphor. There’s another text with some alternate versions of that same teacher’s teachings, in which forgiveness is pretty much the main theme. A Course in Miracles, known to its fans as the blue book, points out forgiveness isn’t letting someone off the hook for something they did wrong – forgiveness is recognizing there was nothing really wrong to begin with.
Heady stuff. You know it’s right, though, don’t you? Telling someone you forgave the sorry son-of-a-whatever who cut you off in traffic today keeps you connected to them, and to the whole incident. Thing to do is let it go, release it and walk away, content in the knowledge the Powers That Be will see to it they roast in a level of hell reserved for… oops. See how easy it is? That’s like the evil twin of the sappy T-shirt slogan about letting something you love go, so you can see if it was never yours because it doesn’t come back: If you love something, let it go. If it doesn’t come back, hunt it down and kill it. Attractive as that may be at times, it doesn’t really qualify as releasing – or forgiving.
8
There’s an ancient Hawaiian technique of conflict resolution where a spiritual leader, a kahuna, sat all parties down and let them present their sides. Might take days until the charge was released, but once it was, a resolution usually followed. A few years back, Joe Vitale heard of a psychologist in Honolulu who emptied out a ward for the criminally insane using an updated version of the same technique, ho’oponopono. Dr. Hew Len’s methodology was simple. Without meeting the inmates, he sat down with their files and, operating on a literal interpretation of the notion you create your own reality, forgave himself for creating them as less than perfect and whole – by extension, asking their forgiveness as well. Vitale tracked him down, coauthored a book with him, Zero Limits, and brought him to his home base in Wimberley for a mindblowing seminar. A second book, At Zero, followed. In March, Vitale hosted a weekend Advanced Ho’oponopono gathering in Wimberley that featured presentations by some of the crème de la crème of Austin holistic practitioners, teachers, and musicians, all with variations of one common message.
Let it go. Whether you’re working with the vibrations of music, Reiki, or the energy of computer-generated biofeedback, the idea is to release what’s in the way, so the vibrations can flow, free and clear. Dr. Hew Len has a mantra of sorts he recited as he studied those files. I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. Joe added a fifth line, a sort of quintessential summary of the whole idea. I forgive myself. Release the old stuff, and you can open your heart to the Eagle’s call of courage and love, like the rainbow warrior maiden in Mara Friedman’s cover art, Rooted in Reverence, Seated in Spirit. That’s as good a reason as any to forgive. Mara Friedman’s art is at www.NewMoonVisions.com

THE SCIENCE OF PRANIC HEALING L
ife force is the essence of – well, everything alive. The Chinese call it chi, in Sanskrit it’s prana. It’s the energetic framework of the world, and restoring it to balance within the human body is the basis of the energetic healing system known as Pranic Healing. Stephen Co grew up in the Philippines, went to Catholic school, and followed the sacraments. By 1988, he was an engineer and a Southern Baptist, not exactly fertile ground for becoming a master of energetic healing. His wife broke her hip, though, and doctors said it would be over three three months before she could put any weight on it. Someone told him about Pranic Healing. He was skeptical, but decided to try it if it helped his wife. It did, very quickly – and Co became a lifetime student of the man who taught the class, Pranic founder Grand Master Choa Kok Sui of the Philippines. Like his student, Choa Kok Sui was an engineer by trade. Co calls Pranic Healing a science, with all the principles and techniques clearly stated. One of Co’s students, Austin Pranic healer Elizabeth McKenzie, outlines some of its principles: Pranic Healing is a non-touch system that scans, or actually feels, the aura, to find areas of energetic depletion, congestion, or stagnation. A manual cleansing technique called sweeping is designed to remove blockages and stagnant energy before giving fresh energy. Sweeping can help prevent uncomfortable detoxification symptoms, often allowing the body to heal itself more quickly by permitting fresh energy to penetrate deeper into the body to be utilized as healing fuel. Pranic techniques take a cookbook approach, using specific routines of cleansing and energizing, matched to specific patterns of energetic deficiencies related to illnesses. Practitioners draw energy directly from the sun, air, ground, and other spiritual sources, and project prana into a subject’s auras and chakras, Advanced practitioners use color energies to accelerate the body’s innate healing abilities, and some use specialized techniques with crystals. Energetic hygiene techniques not always found in healing modalities use cleansing routines to clear away and dispose of stagnant energy once it’s swept from the body.
Pranic psychotherapy. Negative emotions and traumatic experiences are essentially negative thought forms and energies lodged in the aura and critical energy centers, in body, mind, and spirit. They’re often difficult to release, requiring months – even years – of traditional psychotherapy to see improvement. Pranic healing includes protocols designed to clear crippling emotional energetic patterns without requiring recipients to reveal potentially embarrassing personal
10
information, including a strict hygiene system for disposing of energetic cords. Other techniques have the potential to address damaged webs in chakras, release negative childhoood programming that can hold back success in business and personal life, repair the effects of psychic attacks, protect chakras, auras, and material possessions, remove negative influences from emotions like envy, jealousy, and anger (both from within and from others), and extract and disintegrate negative patterns of compulsive behaviors, phobias, addictions, and depression.
How does it compare to other modalities? There are a couple of differences. Some modalities introduce new energy, and let old energy be released. Pranic clears old energy away first, then introduces new energy – sort of like hosing mud off your car before you wash and wax it. Both approaches, Co says, have value. Pranic Healing is designed to complement and enhance other healing techniques, not compete with them – chi gung, Reiki, massage therapy, chiropractic, Christian laying on of hands, shamanism, Native American techniques, even traditional, mainstream medicine. Pranic Healing’s biggest contribution may be taking care of the healer. Instead of getting rid of any negative energy picked up from clients, Pranic practtioners work to prevent it from being absorbed in the first place, or re-absorbed by clients. Holistic (and mainstream) practitioners whose tanks get a little low – whose energetic bodies get drained or muddied up by clients – are usually good candidates for the occasional drive through the Pranic car wash. Elizabeth McKenzie is an Austin-based Advanced Pranic Healing practitioner trained by Master Stephen Co. She offers in-person and long distance sessions, including Pranic Psychotherapy and Crystal Healing, to address physical, emotional, and psychological issues. West Meets East Holistic resources for mental health and substance abuse by John Harvey, MA, LPC-S, LCDC Western bio-medical approaches to healing are remarkable in their ability to diagnose, intervene, heal, and repair physical defects, even replace or transplant body parts. However, the Western paradigm falls short when layered onto mental suffering.
The mind isn’t a physical thing. It can’t be seen under a microscope, or detected with a biopsy. Psychiatrist and author Thomas Szasz quipped, “the only illness a cadaver surely cannot ‘have’ is mental illness.” After many years of neurobiological research, there are still no biological markers for most mental health diagnoses – clearly, mental suffering isn’t a result of biological factors alone. Nevertheless, Western bio-medical, scientific methods have been the dominant way of conceptualizing mental suffering. The Western medical model of mental health has directed the treatment landscape as the chosen method of teaching, understanding, and treating mental disorders in American culture, holding sway over the evolution of the DSM and rise of the pharmaceutical industry. Concerned about America’s mental health epidemic, physician Marcia Angell notes a staggering forty-six percent of adults have met criteria for mental illness established by the American Psychiatric Association in their lifetimes.
One in ten Americans over age six are prescribed anti-depressants. Pharmaceutical remedies can be helpful in some cases, but do little to help people navigate painful life circumstances – no Western medical procedures or medications repair spirit, transplant soul, or install meaning in life. Eastern concepts of healing see more function than dysfunction in the human experience. Jon Kabat-Zinn, addressing a mindful approach to life, insists healing capacities are innately present in humans. “As long as you’re breathing, there’s more right with you than wrong, no matter how ill or hopeless you may feel.” This departs from Western approaches seeking out dysfunction and brokenness. Positive psychologist Martin Seligman identifies a flaw of Western psychiatry – its preoccupation to diagnose, pathologize, and victimize the human condition. Northwest Counseling and Wellness Center integrates Eastern healing practices into programs and services, treating the whole person by promoting enhanced mind-body functioning and synergetic solutions to life’s suffering. Facility practitioners are well versed in helping clients find spiritual, energetic, soulful solutions, within a supportive community. John Harvey, MA, LPC-S, LCDC, is a Doctoral Candidate and Executive Director of Austin’s Northwest Counseling and Wellness Center, providing holistic, integrative resources for substance abuse and mental health. Energy Medicine, Quantum Biofeedback, and a kick in the butt by Michael Abedin There are lots of ways to explain energy medicine, but they boil down to one simple law. Change energy, and mass (or matter) will follow. This is nothing new. Einstein theorized that if you speed up mass, it becomes energy. If you slow down energy, it becomes mass. (Quantum physics has proven him right.) Thousands of years before Einstein, there were those who knew if you shifted the vibration and flow of energy using prayer, laying on of hands, or acupuncture needles, matter would follow – and healing could happen.
Then came computers. By the early 1900s, pioneers like Royal Rife and Nikola Tesla (who said the secrets of the Universe could be understood in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration) were developing electronic devices that could dive into the human energy field, detect anomalies, and correct them on a subatomic, quantum level. Their research led to current generations of computerized systems like the SCIO (Scientific Consciousness Interface Operations), a quantum biofeedback program that introduces thousands of frequencies in a matter of minutes, measures them against a baseline, and gives you a thorough status report. Next, using energy, frequency, and vibration to detect what frequencies may be out of whack in your body, the quantum biofeedback software operates like a tuning fork. It reintroduces vibrations that can entrain frequencies back into harmony, retraining your cells, organs, and systems to function correctly.
Testing, 1-2-3… 10,000. Kristin Starr, an Austin-based SCIO practitioner, outlines the process: Minutes after connecting to your energy field, remotely or through direct skin response, quantum computer technology can measure over ten thousand different elements, comparing the frequencies in your body to ideal frequencies. It lets your body recommend its own priorities, and feeds back energetic retraining modalities ranging from Rife frequencies to Bach flower essences, dark field microscopy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), electro-acupuncture, allergy desensitization, and brain balancing – over thirty different methods, tailored specifically to your energy field The SCIO’s powerful computer software has the potential to reduce everyday psychological, emotional, and physical
12
stressors that interfere with your body’s natural healing abilities, including programming for chronic pain, fatigue, anti-aging, insomnia, hormone imbalances, allergies, digestive disorders, fatigue – even brain fog, anxiety, and depression.
The kick in the butt. Practice (or receive) alternative or complementary therapies, and you’ll sometimes come across things that don’t seem to want to heal, or even substantially improve. It’s usually because alternative methods are a last resort, so now you’re working uphill. Physical symptoms causing pain or discomfort are usually what bring you to healthcare practitioners, mainstream or alternative. In energy medicine, though, physical symptoms are the last sign of disease, not the first – the kick in the butt to get your attention after you’ve missed (or ignored) the tap on the shoulder or the elbow in the ribs on some other level. Unless you’re really tuned in, those other levels can be hard to detect since they’re energetic in nature before they become physical – and that’s where quantum computer technology steps in. Changes in subatomic frequencies will show up long before even X-rays and MRI’s can detect a change in physiology. Biofeedback (which is FDA approved for certain applications) has the potential to tune up those frequencies, clearing energy blockages and stress before they become physical.
Plug in the charger. If you’re smart, you don’t let the battery in your phone or laptop run down before you recharge it – but if you do, you don’t take it into the shop for repairs. You plug it in and give it the energy it needs to work like it’s supposed to. If you’re really smart, you don’t wait until physical symptoms, stress, or side effects from harmful drugs and invasive procedures get so bad your body’s starting from less than zero, energetically. You plug in and let the computer recharge you, unblock your energy blockages, and tune up your energy field so your physical body can follow. And that’s the job of quantum biofeedback. The requisite disclaimer: Not intended to diagnose or treat, if you’re sick see the practitioner of your choice, blah, blah, blah. Kristin Starr is a SCIO practitioner offering in-person and long distance sessions. Free 15-minute consultation. (310) 251-6674.

Coyotes, Crossroads, and Quantum Reiki by Michael Abedin A scene in black and white. Worried family members wait outside a sickroom. The gruff but kindly old country doctor emerges, wiping his hands on a towel. His sleeves are rolled up, glasses are perched on his nose, sweat shines on his brow. ‘The crisis has passed,’ he tells the family. ‘Now it’s up to him.’ (Or her, or God…)
Y
ou hear the word crisis a lot nowadays. You got your economic crisis, drug crisis, Mideast, South China Sea, Name Your Hotspot crisis. What you really got, of course, is a News Twit Who Needs Something to Talk About or a Politician Who Needs to Distract Your Attention crisis -- but that’s another story. A crisis is a time for decisions, a crossroads. Its etymological roots, in fact, come from Greek and Latin terms for decisions, for separation. Like a crossroads (or just a cross, for that matter), a crisis separates one direction from another, giving you options. Somewhere along the line, a crisis got confused with an emergency, something that emerges, pops up and demands your immediate attention – mostly to scare you into staying tuned to the News Twit. Here’s the difference, though, in easy to follow cartoon terminology. In a crisis, you’re Wile E. Coyote, standing at the crossroads waiting to see which direction the Roadrunner’s coming from so you can release the rope to drop the safe on him (from the Acme Safe Company, of course). In an emergency, he’s beeped at you from behind, startling you, and the Acme safe is dropping straight towards you.
a gut-wrenching roller coaster dive gained you airspeed, and airspeed could save your life. Quantum healing systems like Reiki, on the other hand, have the potential to be supersonic jet fighters, breaking in the afterburners, bending laws of physics, and breaking the speed of sound in one explosive heartbeat of a moment, taking you straight from unhealthy to healthy and bypassing that whole unpleasant healing crisis thing.
Unless you don’t want to. Say what? Why would you choose to bypass a free pass to the express lane? Why go through pain and suffering? Good question, one that could fill a whole book full of answers – and a lot of holy books try to do just that. Pain, denial, and suffering have always been seen as a (or the) path to redemption and healing by your best-selling religions, even when the main character healed folks with a touch, or on the power of faith alone. Believe you have to suffer to heal, and suffer you will. There are plenty of other crossroads on the path to healing. Healees who think someone else will fix them, healers who get stuck thinking they’re doing the healing. Veteran holistic practitioners usually have first or second-hand stories of someone who’s had a miraculous healing of some dire condition, then dived right back into it because it was what they knew – a known factor, safe in its certainty.
The biggie? Time to move. In medical terms, a crisis is the point where a patient begins to improve and will recover, or will continue to decline and probably head for the exit. (See: A scene in black and white…) In alternative or natural healing systems, the classic version off a healing crisis is that you’re going to get worse before you get better – wayy worse, in some cases. by Christina Allen As our legends have it, there’s usually a mysterious man or woman who lives just outside the community, at the edge of the forest. They have been rumored to have strange powers, and because they’re always alone, they’re often feared. Rarely do they have partners or children, but animals are quite instinctively drawn to them. You may even see an owl or a raven perched on their shoulder, perhaps a wolf or deer standing near their walking stick. There’s a reason they live at the edge of civilization. It’s quieter there – their connection to Nature is profoundly more accessible outside the distractions of civilization. Further, they may have gifts and wisdom that don’t quite fit in with the cultural paradigms that spawned them, so they retreat from the pressures of assimilation and beat to the rhythm of their own drums.
We distrust these people, however. We want people to mirror to us that our actions and life choices have value and purpose. Because there’s an emphasis on family and partnering in our culture, they reflect our shadows instead. They show us our fears of being alone, being an outcast and of not belonging, even of dying alone. The truth is, we all harbor these feelings of being an outsider, some time or another. Many long for deep connections they can’t seem to cultivate. Having broken ourselves away from belonging to tribes, where the burdens and joys of raising children are shared by all, we now collect into little nuclear families. Parents are often burdened and overworked, and many lose their connections to each other over time. Within these families, the dysfunctions of the parents – and the parent’s parents – become amplified without an outside influence. In this vacuum, the children can mistakenly interpret any abuse, or lack of connection, as reflective of their own value. They may find themselves believing that if they can just win over the right person, they’ll finally have love.

The Q’ero Indians of Peru have a word for love in their vocabulary. It’s called Munay. It’s not romantic love, however, but impersonal love, the vibration of creation. It’s within everything. This love is actually free – no one has to win it or earn it from another. We’re all part of divine creation, built from and nurtured by Mother Earth. When we retreat to Nature, we’re invited to feel this Mother’s love in everything. By taking a trip to the edge of the forest and living in that solitude for a spell, we face our fears of being alone and abandoned. Separation begins in the mind. It comes from selfjudgment, doubt, and a sense of unworthiness we developed in childhood. At the edge of the forest we can experience connection and inclusion, because when we push away all the people who reflect our unworthiness, we find only ourselves, and that we’re part of a loving Creation. Love is reflected to us, everywhere – in the tree in the yard, the gentle wisp of wind across our face, and in the gurgling of a creek.
It is absolutely everywhere. Take a little time away from the concrete jungle, and from the people you’re trying to win over, and go to the edge of the forest. There you will find the arms of complete acceptance. As you allow yourself to be accepted by the Mother, you open to self-acceptance – and in that, the magic of your divine light. It may seem lonely, but you’re not alone. Instead of brewing the judgment and protection that comes with needing to belong, you will spread the seeds of compassion that come from Munay. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). Does it actually do more harm than good? by Katie Tatterfield, MS
A
s a redhead with fair skin and freckles, just like my dad and probably many Austin All Natural readers, I get burned by the sun quite easily if I’m not careful. We get a huge kick out of our vacation pics, though, because we never fail to have big globs of sunscreen on our noses, and a ghostly complexion.
You need sunshine and vitamin D to thrive. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient, responsible for over three thousand chemical processes in your body, and is very important for optimal functioning of the immune system, cardiovascular system, bone health, and overall disease prevention – including helping to prevent melanoma and other cancers. The best way to get adequate amounts of vitamin D is from the sun, but you can also get it through supplementation, and in small amounts in food. It’s important that you do spend some time in the sun without sunscreen, to soak up some cancer-preventative vitamin D to avoid getting burned, but if you’re heading to the lake, the beach, or the park for hours on end, you may need some extra protection to avoid the damaging effects of prolonged sun exposure.
You have internal protection that works just like sunscreen. Our ancestors wore very little clothes, didn’t have access to modern day sunscreen, and still had very little chronic degenerative disease, including skin cancer. Every major antioxidant in the human body can be found in your skin. An antioxidant is a strong cell that goes around neutralizing damaging cells (free radicals, that can do damage to all surrounding cells) so no more harm can be done. Consuming these antioxidants in your diet can help protect you from the sun. A diet rich in antioxidants has many skin protection benefits, so make sure you’re including antioxidant-rich foods at every meal. Carotenoids, vitamins E and C, and polyphenols are said to yield the most protection by neutralizing free radicals, absorbing UV light so no damage is done, bringing moisture, strength and elasticity to the skin, and removing damage done to the skin (wrinkles) by regenerating collagen. Where can you get these antioxidants in your diet? Lutein and zeaxanthin. Egg yolks, broccoli, kale. Lycopene. Tomatoes, watermelon. Astaxanthin. Shrimp, salmon.
18
Polyphenols. Green tea, 70% or more dark chocolate. Vitamin E. Nuts, seeds. Vitamin C. Papaya, mango, sweet potatoes, bell peppers.
Sunscreen shouldn’t be your only sun protection strategy. Applying sunscreen doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to prevent skin cancer from happening. Did you know Americans are one of the top countries with the highest rates of skin cancers – and we also rank high on the use of sunscreen? As you may (or may not) know, sunscreens are often loaded with toxic hormone-disrupting and cancer-causing chemicals. We’re slathering on sunscreen to avoid burning and avoid getting cancer, and all the while we’re applying cancercausing chemicals to our skin. It’s important to know which sunscreens to use. Stay away from common brands that use chemicals like Oxybenzone as a “protector.” Chemicals like Oxybenzone absorb into your bloodstream and act as an endocrine disruptor. Basically, it interferes with sex hormones in both men and women, causing many negative symptoms. Choose a sunscreen with zinc oxide as the protection factor. It stays on the surface of your skin and actually blocks UV rays from penetrating the skin. Here’s a complete list of skin protection strategies for prolonged sun exposure: * Don’t get burned. * Wear protective clothing and gear (hats, long sleeves, sunglasses). * Bring or seek shade for long periods of time outdoors * Apply zinc oxide-based, chemical-free, 30-50 SPF sunscreen frequently throughout the day. * Protect your skin from the inside out, by eating a diet rich in sun-protecting antioxidants. WATERING YOUR JOINTS by Marge Captain Dehydration is one of the most common underlying causes of many health issues, from headaches to constipation and blood pressure problems. However, most people don’t associate dehydration with joint pain and stiffness. Many of the fluids we consume – soft drinks, tea, coffee, alcohol – act as diuretics, causing you to lose water by increasing urination. Several drugs also display a diuretic effect, and a diet rich in protein and fat can increase fluid loss as well. Some of the primary ingredients in joint supplements are carbohydrate and protein complexes known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Along with sulfur compounds, GAGs form a thick gel-like liquid that supplies cushioning, lubrication, shock absorption, and nutrition to the cartilage in your joints.
Lubricating the matrix. Keep in mind, however, that GAGs are only the matrix, or formwork, like a sponge. The sponge needs to be filled with water for it to be full and cushiony. As you age, these matrixes break down and the ability to keep our joints hydrated lessens. Taking joint-supportive nutrients can help, but you also need to rehydrate your joints. You can start to do this by removing, or cutting back on, soft drinks, tea, coffee, and alcohol – and drink plenty of water every day. Ounces equal to half your body weight is recommended for most people. (Weigh 150 pounds? Drink 75 ounces of water daily.) At first, increasing the amount of water you drink may not seem like it’s doing any good. In the beginning, it may just make you go to the bathroom more frequently, but as the matrixes begin to swell again and regain their ability to retain water, that will subside. It’s like trying to water a plant when the surrounding soil has dried up. When you first water it, it takes a few times before the plant rehydrates and begins to retain the much needed water. A similar thing happens with your joints. The quality of the water you drink is as important as how much you drink. Drinking alkaline water is one of the best ways to help your body stay hydrated. It’s an antioxidant, neutralizes the body’s free radicals, and it is rich in ionic minerals such as calcium. Marge Captain is a hydration specialist in alkaline antioxidant water. For more information – and free alkaline water – call (512) 627-3585 or (512) 415-7669.

Enjoy that sip. If the State of Texas and the feds have their way, it could be one of the last.
Water rustlers.
SAVE THE HILL TOP CAFE by Michael Abedin
D
rive out 290 West from Austin. Ten or fifteen miles outside Fredericksburg, you’ll swear you’re in Napa, high-dollar wineries lining the road. Drive out the other side of town on the old Mason Highway. You’ll know you’re in Texas when you see the Hill Top Café. Look like it might have been an old gas station, country store, or roadhouse around about, say, 1915? It was. In 1980, Johnny Nicholas and his wife Brenda commenced to building it into one of the finest places you’ll ever eat, featuring (get ready) Greek-Cajun-Southwestern cuisine. Johnny, of Greek descent, came to Fredericksburg from Cajun country by way of a bank shot through South Austin – and through just about everywhere else, playing music with the likes of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Willie, and Asleep at the Wheel. The from-scratch kitchen’s crew puts out a menu using organic herbs and vegetables you probably walked by on your way in, produce and meat from neighbors’ farms, Louisiana crawfish, and snapper, flounder, shrimp, and blue crab fresh from the Gulf.
Wear your boots. Order the oysters. Settle in for serious perusal of music posters, cowboy gear, old guns and farm tools and such on the walls. If you ain’t from around here, take a tip from locals in creased Wranglers at a table nearby, having dinner with their wives – take off your hat when you dine with a lady. (Put it crown down, so you don’t ruin the roll.) Start with Oysters Bruton, or you haven’t been to the Hill Top. Lightly dusted, pan-seared in pepper sauce, they were late singer-songwriter Stephen Bruton’s eye-opener, a surefire remedy for one too many of anything the night before. Wash ‘em down with a cold Texas beer – but first, have yourself a sip of water, straight from a well tapped into the Edwards Aquifer, pure and natural, not a drop of chlorine.
20
Seems a couple of years ago, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), in cahoots with the feds’ Environmental Protection Association (EPA), decided to exercise a bit of environmentalism. About time, huh? Stop crop dusters in the Panhandle overspraying poison on livestock, home gardens, and people? Buckle down on chemical plants making Texas one of the world’s biggest polluters? Nope. TCEQ decided to enforce an EPA ordinance requiring public water systems to be chlorinated, and decided Hill Top’s well is, well – a public water system. Ahh, you might be thinking, because of a run (so to speak) of Hill Country Revenge? “They did it for no reason whatsoever,” Johnny maintains. “We’ve never had a problem in thirty-six years with our water, or any other aspect of public health and safety. TCEQ and EPA have been attempting to force us to hire their engineering firms to design chlorination systems, reverse osmosis systems, well and pumping modifications, and take over our water – at tremendous expense, somewhere in the neighborhood of $60,000.”
Put it in, take it out. Brilliant, huh? Put chlorine in pristine Hill Country water from a system that exceeds all state and county codes, then take it out again with reverse osmosis – which Johnny points out puts about four gallons of water down the drain to produce one gallon. (This is in a state that just survived the worst drought on record, remember.) The State of Texas has never really needed any help to make bonehead decisions, but it doesn’t hurt to get a federal agency on board – one that, ironically, is in the process of being hamstrung in its ability to do any real environmental protection. It’s easy to complain when cool places close. Here’s what to do to save one. Contribute to Hill Top’s legal fund to fight the water rustlers, at gofundme.com/help-save-hill-top-cafe (or go to HillTopCafe.com for a direct link). Contact every state, local, and federal official you can, call them out on all those promises to protect American businesses. Read Johnny’s letter about the whole shebang at HillTopCafe.com. Then read the menu and live music lineup. Head north out of Fredericksburg on the old Mason Highway. Stroll in, sign the petition, check out the chalkboard specials. Don’t forget the Oysters Bruton. INSIGHT AND IVORY
A gift from the other world by Marlene Mueller The gifts I wish to give you are: My deepest love, the safety of truth, the wisdom of the universe, and the reality of God. With these four things, nothing will deter you. – Emmanuel Series, Book 1, Prologue Do you know what a walk-in is? A walk-in is a replacement soul. This is hard for many to believe, so it’s often called a Near Death Experience, an NDE. My own NDE happened sixty-two years ago, when I was almost four. Burned over seventy percent of my body from boiling water, I was left for dead in the hospital, since no one understood how to care for burns in the 1950s. I kept calling the nurse to my bed, because I was seeing Jesus sitting on the windowsill next to my bed. Several nurses came in to tell me they didn’t see him, and I shouldn’t be afraid. Finally, a nurse said he was there for me only, to help me. I was going in and out of consciousness as I watched him. I awoke during the night, and was in his arms as he carried me into a light. That was the last thing I remembered.
I lived life with one foot in the other world.

Always aware of a divide between soul and body, at times having the sensation of being on my knees inside my head, looking out of my eyes, I knew things. My dreams would come true. A shaman did a soul retrieval, seeing a replacement soul enter my body soon after entering the light. My studies of shamanism also introduced me to my spirit animal, Elephant. We all have our own spirit animals – the fact that my animal is so powerful gave me a good amount of power during a journey or reading. We’re all mediums, but we get too clogged up with thoughts, letting our minds drag us around, and lose the power. It’s only in deep quiet that we communicate with spirit, or God, learning this Earth plane is just a classroom. Our souls go on, long after we leave. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, Will I remain in Leander or move someplace else? A smaller house or new town? And will there be a new love in my life, and when? Jan, 70, Leander, TX Dear Jan, It seems you will live in three other places in your lifetime. It also seems that you will eventually remarry within five or so years. So get ready, for he will be a remarkable and quite witty mate. You will get along perfectly. Until then, you will live where you live now. Your highest teacher is Ashtar.
Dear Ashtara, I have channeled only once. What steps can I take to channel on a consistent basis? Who will I ultimately channel? How is channeling going to affect my life? Is channeling part of my life’s purpose? And if so please expand on my life purpose! AG, 55, Austin, TX Dear AG, Channeling is either going to be a part of your life, or perhaps it will manifest as a new and awesome book to channel. I think that when you begin to create with your master teacher, you will be instructed to write instead of speak through your deity. Thus, of course, channeling is your only destiny. Perhaps it is not coming as quickly as you expected. Sit back and relax and your Voice Within will become more emphasized. At that time, know that Lord Sandalfon and Maitreya will be there with you.
Dear Ashtara, I am always asking my angels, especially Raphael, for help and support in my work, relationship, and financial lives. Yet, I feel like I have to ‘push’ all the time and it drains my energy. Where can I allow healing and abundance to manifest in the midst of this type of push-pull lifestyle? Joe R., 52, Austin, TX
26
Dear Joe, Asking for assistance means you have not received your answers fast enough. You also are very diligent in your lifestyle and are ready to do whatever it takes to manifest a lot of your personal and transcendent visions. In other words, become the flower and the essence will follow. Become the word and the deed will follow. You will see what I mean. When you are transparent, then enlightenment will follow. Your higher teacher is Gabriel, first born.

The Heartwakers Club
LAUGH IT UP The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli
Why do we elevate the so-called serious over the silly? Why do we huff when a comedian makes light of something important to us, rather than allow the joke to humble and uplift our attitude? Why did the chicken cross the road? You get the joke – why ask why? Sometimes it’s a worthwhile question in an age that forgets the true meaning of words. Humor is one of them. The Latin humere means moisture – our concept of humor began as an antiquated notion that levels of wetness in your body determine your mood. While our scientific take has evolved, the metaphor remains apt. Without the humidity of humility – the ability to make and take a joke – we become emotionally brittle, tending to break rather than bend when life’s winds blow. (As we all know they will.)
A good joke is good medicine. It anticipates ways we’ve prematurely attached ourselves to a position, asking, why? Why be defensive, judgmental, angry? A punchline knocks you out of the saddle you’ve strapped to your high horse, reminding you, if you choose, you can laugh at most things that happen in your life. Rather than struggle for constant control or spend time begging others to conform to your comfort zone, you can exercise true power – practicing a lighthearted and resilient attitude. Yet just as we must be careful not to villainize levity, we must hold space for exploring pain and trauma. There’s a middle ground between denial and victimhood, and that ground is cleared by the enlightenment of shared laughter. It’s a technology of nature, essential for individual sanity and interpersonal peace.
This balancing act is symbolized by the juggler. The juggler carries the weight of many things with a light but measured touch, allowing them space to flow. In relationships, we handle not just our own baggage, but fears and unwanted fantasies of our intimate relations – a lot to manage. Focus too hard, think too much, you’re bound to go crosseyed and drop all the torches. Get a little loose and channel your inner jester. You’ll find a rhythm that keeps everything in orbit, without excessive work.
The takeaway? Healing can involve confrontation, tears, deep grief – and sometimes, it should. Unless we want a world of constant bickering, martyrdom, and stagnancy, though, we can’t afford to separate comedy from tragedy. They’re each other’s consort within the soul, the masks through which we see the world and the world sees us, determining how we behave and how we’re treated. If you refuse to see comedic interpretations as valid, you make a choice to renew the tragedy perpetually. By demoting comedy to a copout, we forfeit your greatest access, not just to happiness, but to connection. Laughter opens you up, calms your defenses, allowing the things you fear or resent to enter your heart and show their softer side. In your relations, cultivate the strength of humor the same way you care for your physical health. Feed and exercise it daily. Challenge it by listening to other points of view without judgment. Learn to discern when it’s preferable to be amused rather than agitated by controversy, and when you truly ought to intervene and stand up for your position.
Notice your judgments around humor. When someone makes a joke you don’t find funny, do you think you’re a better person because you have superior taste, social skills, moral awareness? While you may be right this person has much to work on, your empathy may also need a tune up. A robust sense of humor is deeply attuned to capital-T Truth. To notice what’s funny, you must be incredibly sensitive to what’s actually happening, including connections most folks haven’t noticed yet. Make sure this awareness comes from a true place of humility – the willingness to have your mind changed, the openness to hear and accept something unflattering about yourself without punishing the messenger. Being able to laugh at yourself isn’t just the greatest gift you can give to your partner, whose job it is to hold up an honest mirror –it’s also the greatest gift you can give yourself. Wouldn’t you rather look in that mirror and smile than cringe? Zaeli is a love coach helping you bring consciousness and intention to your emotional life. www.ZAELI.net
