That’s an easy Dead line to trot out on your way to a deadline, seeing as how it’s one of their few songs that doesn’t wander off into long bits of instrumental noodling until your brain is so numb it forgets the lyrics. (Sorry Deadheads, but it’s true. Shoot a rebuttal to the email up there on the left if you’re so inclined – but if you’re a true Deadhead, you’ll forget what you were going to say.)
Strange indeed. The first cover back in June 2006 featured Willie in a hotrod biodiesel pickup truck, so it was sort of, well – natural – to make liberal use of country and rock and roll lyrics to help fill this particular space. Found any of it a bit too strange? Wait’ll you see the story behind this month’s cover. –Michael Abedin

The LOA Mistake by Dr. Joe Vitale
T
he big mistake most people make when it comes to using the Law of Attraction – or using anything to achieve their goals and dreams – is wanting to know how. How do I make it happen? What are the exact steps I should take? How do I get from here to there? The thing is, you rarely if ever know how in advance. Once you complete a goal and can hold it in your hand, or show it off to friends, you can explain the how of it. You’ll then have a complete beginning-middle-ending story. The puzzle will be revealed. You can then explain the steps you took.
But not before you attract it. Recently I surveyed my list, asking what book they would like to see me write next. While virtually everybody wanted more books on ho’oponopono, like Zero Limits and AT Zero, a few wrote in some suggestions. Those people usually wanted to know how to attract something specifically, and how I did it. They wanted stories of people revealing exactly how they attracted their goals. They were asking for step-by-step plans.
This is the big mistake. Let me explain. When I was making a name for myself as a copywriter and marketer back in the 1990s, a lot of things occurred that I couldn’t predict, let alone know how to make them happen. For example, the Internet came along. Who saw that coming? I was one of the first to be online already – on what were called Bulletin Board Systems (a kind of miniature, local-only, limited reach Internet) – so when the actual Internet was born, I was already there. The speaking and writing I was doing in Houston, where I lived at the time, was now being posted on CompuServe and AOL, broadcasting my name across planet Earth. It helped make me cyber-famous. It was certainly an essential step in my career. But I never saw it coming. It was never on my to-do list. How could it be?
Are you starting to see how this works? During these same early years, I wrote a little book called Spiritual Marketing. I released it online, free, and it touched millions of lives. I never knew it would do anything. I released it to the world in the hope it would help people. But The New York Times wrote about it. And Bob Proctor urged me to publish the book.
6
And it became an early print-on-demand book. It was also my first Amazon bestseller. But I wasn’t following a “how to make it happen” plan.
No such plan existed. These synchronistic events were happening as a side result of my passion and persistence. They were happening organically. They were happening on the way to my dream. I couldn’t predict them because I couldn’t see them. They were on the unseen road ahead, to be discovered as I kept moving forward. And along the way in this adventure, a publisher contacted me. He later published my book, Spiritual Marketing, but with a new title – The Attractor Factor. That became the most powerful and popular self-help book I’ve written. And The Attractor Factor was given to a television producer in Australia. She read it and contacted me. She said she wanted me to be in a movie she was making about the Law of Attraction.
It was to be called The Secret. That movie changed my life. It put me on Larry King’s television show, twice, and got me invited to speak in countries I didn’t know existed. How do you make those things happen? After all, none of them could have been foreseen. When people ask for the step-by-step exact plan to make something happen, they are making the mistake of thinking there is such a plan.
There isn’t. There’s a general formula, but not a specific one. There are formulas for helping you choose your intention, start taking action, and maintain momentum once you get going. But there isn’t a specific “do this, and then do this” plan. Even Mark Twain knew it.
Twain said, on his seventieth birthday, “You can’t reach old age by another man’s road. My habits protect my life, but they would assassinate you. Thinking you can copy the specific things I did in my life to attract and achieve specific results in your life is a big mistake. Thinking there is a how to get where you want to go is an error. You attract the results you want with the formulas I’ve revealed in books like The Attractor Factor, Attract Money Now, and most recently in The Miracle. Other self-help authors have other formulas. Mine goes something like this: t %FDMBSF ZPVS JOUFOUJPO PS JOTQJSBUJPO t Take the first baby step to begin moving toward your goal. t ,FFQ UBLJOH BDUJPO PO BMM OFYU TUFQT BOE OFX opportunities. t 4VSSPVOE ZPVSTFMG XJUI QPTJUJWF QFPQMF BOE NFTTBHFT t $MFBS BOZ MJNJUJOH CFMJFGT BT ZPV OPUJDF UIFN

You’ll notice there isn’t a specific task that will work for you and everybody else. There isn’t because there’s no way to know it in advance. Steve Jobs knew this, too. Jobs once said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Melissa Etheridge told it to me this way. “You just get on the path, you just do it, and that’s your intention, and then you let The Great Something bring you the stuff. Have faith that it’s all working out in your favor. Have faith that The Great Something is – as I sing in my title track song on my new album – your hidden ally in life. Have faith in yourself, the Universe, The Great Something, and your journey. And then one day, after the dust has cleared and you realize you’ve attracted your goal, you can look back and tell the how of it all.

You can then connect the dots. But all you can do today is the next obvious action step. It’s the next dot that will lead to your success. Dot, by dot, by dot, you will get there. Now go do today’s dot.

hose Chinese have a different way if looking at everything, to paraphrase (okay, plagiarize) a Steve Martin routine about the French. ch. There’s said to be, for instance, an old Chinese custom that it’s your ur first birthday when you pop out into to the world, not a year later. Like a lot of old Chinese customs, ustoms, it’s probably best not to ask anyy old Chinese about that if it works for you. (The Chinese word for chaos, aos, btw, isn’t really the same one as opportunity.) That said, it workss just fine when you’re celebrating the he June anniversary of a fine natural ral magazine, entering its twelfth year as Austin’s only homegrown natural atural publication. Looking back, you realize what you’ve learned – you get PMS (PreMagazine Syndrome) as production time looms every month, and when your June 2006 debut cover boy is Willie Nelson, you’ve pretty much committed yourself to a precedent for cultural icons and eclectic imagery, on the cover and behind it. Which segues nicely into dancing robots.
That gum you like? It’s coming back in style. Eclectic and icon would be a good two-word resume for filmmaker David Lynch, creator of Blue Velvet, Lost Highway – and, of course, Twin Peaks, the brainbreaking series that snuck onto network television for two seasons in the early Nineties, followed by a feature film prequel showing who really killed Laura Palmer. (Sort of.) If you’re a Peak Freak, you started watching May 21 as the story continues, twenty-five years later. To celebrate that (and the ongoing Austin Instagram homage @phillipjrphotos), June’s cover recreates the Red Room, the inter-dimensional portal between the Lodges, complete with its own steampunk mechanized version of the dancing little guy in the red suit. A fine way to celebrate. Join the fun – get out there and be eclectic. Just remember... The owls are not what they seem.

THE KILLER 3 How high blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol took a life by Dr. Trevor Botts
O
ne of my mentors refers to America’s sickness-care system as a conveyor belt to poor health. If you don’t take control of your own health, the system manages it for you. Along that ride, you’ll be handed prescriptions and pills that manage disease and its symptoms, but don’t offer resolutions or cures or support the body’s healing processes. That list of pills can get longer and longer as the ride progresses. At the end, there’s only one destination for anyone who chooses not to be proactive about health – loss of independence, of quality of life, and of life.
It’s your decision. A gentleman I knew growing up was named Herb. He played trumpet in a community band and was an Eagle Scout. As a young trumpeter and a Scout myself, I looked up to him. Like many Americans, he was diagnosed with a number of health concerns – diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. Herb was taught our current system could manage his illnesses, so he took the medications prescribed for him. For decades, he felt fine, didn’t feel anything was broken or not working -- but disease was beginning to progress internally. As I went through health training, I shared alternatives about being proactive towards health. He was impressed, but it didn’t quite fit in with what he was willing to do. He didn’t make any lifestyle changes, and his health continued to deteriorate slowly. Overt time, he was no longer able to walk around the lake with his wife and friends, and felt weak, winded, fatigued. As his diabetes progressed, he developed aches, pains, and typical numbness and tingling in his legs and feet, until his wife found him sweeping leaves in the driveway in freezing weather wearing only slippers – he couldn’t feel his feet anymore. Eventually, he developed shingles, low-back herniation, his blood pressure continued to worsen, and he ended up confined to bed for long periods. Herb woke up one day and realized he’d fallen off the end of the allopathic medicine conveyor belt, losing his independence and quality of life. Its heartbreaking to see someone you love go through this – especially when he’s your grandfather.
House on fire. The World Health Organization reports ninety percent of diseases today are not treatable with orthodox medical procedures because they’re chronic, slow degenerative processes based on lifestyle as a cause or contributing factor. Our medical system is designed for the ten percent who need crisis intervention – broken bones, wounds, emergency surgery – and excels at it.
10
If your house is on fire, burning to the ground, you call the fire department. They come with ladders, hoses, axes, kick in doors and windows, and soak everything in water. This causes damage, but puts out flames and saves the integrity of your house – and maybe your life. When the crisis is over, it’s silly to call firefighters back to rebuild your house – that’s not what they’re trained for. You need carpenters, electricians, and plumbers to rebuild. It’s the same with your health – and an even better approach to health is functional wellness, which asks why. Why is your body not healing – why did the fire start?
A different look at lab tests. Patients often tell me they had blood work and the labs came back normal, but they don’t feel normal – they’re still suffering with symptoms and issues. The explanation is simple. In the U.S., blood values are usually compared to averages, on a bell-shaped curve, of others having blood work done. Fall in a specific range, you’re normal. The problem is, those averages are based on sick people on a lot of medications, which artificially change lab values. Functional practitioners don’t look at averages – we look at functional lab ranges, based on what good health looks like. This gives us a narrower range of information about how your health may be starting to shift, so we can be proactive and preventive rather than waiting for major problems. I learned some valuable lessons from Herb. The true solution to our health crisis can’t be found in pills – and no matter how much I seek to help someone, it’s up to them to choose to take action. Or not. Trevor Botts is founder and clinic director of Inspire Wellness Center, offering natural, non-invasive wellness programs and functional lab interpretations. Free weekly seminars and dinners each month. June: ‘The Killer 3’. Info, RSVP: (512) 800-2026 www.InspireAustin.com

Wooleyboogers, Flower Remedies, and Elmer Fudd’s Carrots by Michael Abedin
I
n holistic circles, every physical symptom or disease is said to have an underlying mental, emotional, or spiritual culprit lurking somewhere behind the curtain. True enough, but not that simple. Trying to find a single cause and effect relationship between a particular bit of stress or emotional trauma and a specific physical ailment is tricky. You can wind up in the same linear, diagnostic model of mainstream medicine that alternative healing is supposed to be an alternative to, using Newton’s linear logic in Einstein’s quantum universe – sort of like pulling onto the Autobahn in a beat-up VW bug, while trying to unfold a map from the gas station. The rabbit hole of emotions and thoughts is a deep one, and trying to identify, (much less relive) all your past traumas is a no-win proposition. Get stuck in a labyrinth of digging into previous lifetimes, and you better start looking for carrots to yank down out of Elmer Fudd’s garden – you may not see daylight again any time soon. You want to relieve those mental and emotional drains on your energy, not relive them.
And how, one might ask, does one do that? Glad one asked. The notion of “working on yourself” like you’re repairing damage to an old house is a tricky turn of phrase, conjuring up images of saws and hammers and nails. As any remodeler will tell you (unless you’re looking over their estimate), once you start tearing into walls, you find more than you bargained for. Replace a little wiring or pipe, and the next frayed or rusty part of the system will go. On a subatomic level, down where the teeny-tiniest bits of stuff live and play with one another, matter and energy flipflop quicker than Faye Dunaway’s sister/daughter/sister line in Chinatown, and time and space don’t follow linear rules – even if Jack Nicholson’s slapping them around. If all the frequencies of energy/matter/energy making up you are vibrating harmoniously deep down in your cells, your system hums right along. If one gets out of whack, a dose of high-level universal life force energy might be just what the doctor ordered (or probably didn’t, actually) to entrain it back into harmony – maybe instantaneously, maybe in a natural progression.
12
Either way, it’s generally a lot easier on you than exhuming your old stuff and running DNA tests to see what happened. Here’s how it can work, using the Quantum Reiki system: t 5IF QSBDUJUJPOFS T KPC Be an antenna, bring down a frequency of universal energy specifically calibrated for healing purpose and hand it to you. t :PVS KPC BT B SFDJQJFOU Accept it, let yourself use it to heal whatever you’re ready to heal, in the manner that’s best for you. (You don’t need to know what’s being healed, or how.) t /FJUIFS EPFT UIF QSBDUJUJPOFS who may ask if you have a particular area of concern but doesn’t need to know every detail, especially about mental and emotional wooleyboogers. t " TQFDJöD TZNCPM in part of the session gives you an opportunity to let go of wooleyboogers. Feel a twinge come up? Feel it, let it go – you don’t need to have a root beer together and go back over old times. t 3FTJTU UIF UFNQUBUJPO to ask what the practitioner “picked up” about you. Unless they’re an experienced and/or trained medical intuitive or psychic – and have made that abundantly clear and have your consent or request – that’s not part of a Reiki session. t 4BNF UIJOH HPFT for giving advice, unless they’re a trained and/or licensed coach or counselor, and it’s made clear that’s part of why you’re there.
Send flowers afterwards. The homeopathically prepared flower remedies created by Edward Bach in the 1930’s, specifically for mental and emotional states that can lead to physical symptoms, are a good followup to a Reiki session. The best (and usually least expensive) thing is to have someone experienced with them help you make up a long-term, synchronistic blend of remedies but it’s easy enough to use single pnes on your own. Michael Abedin is an eighth-generation Reiki Master Teacher in the direct lineage of Reiki founder Mikao Usui, offering Reiki and Bach remedy sessions and training. The Quantum Reiki Master Intensive, August 4-6, covers all three levels of Reiki, with information about Bach remedies. Pre-registration discount. Phone registration required. (512) 879-7299
REIKI And the manifestation of Spirit by Erin Musgrave Reiki is universal life force energy that gently enters the body’s cells, in turn giving the body the potential to heal itself, on its own, from disease and illness. In a sense, Reiki is way of turning on a switch that can activate your own healing mechanisms. Reiki is safe and gentle on the body, and has the potential to address physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs. Clients describe the experience as a sensation of warm, calming energy blanketing the body, giving them a feeling of peace and relaxation. They often feel refreshed and focused afterwards, and may feel dramatic – and sometimes, immediate – relief in pain levels. No responsible holistic practitioner will tell you not to visit a doctor or stop taking prescribed medications, but some Reiki recipients have found it helped them make changes in their health, avoiding costly doctor visits and dangerous medications – and some have become practitioners as a result.
See, hear, communicate. Because Reiki works with all levels of a client’s being, practitioners can often feel as if manifestations of Spirit are being channeled in during a session. When they place their hands on a client’s head or body, they may intuitively know the client’s guides and loved ones might be joining in the session in a way that gives the client the ability to see, hear, and communicate with Spirit one on one, giving them a much more personal and intimate experience. It’s important to remember a client communicates directly with any personal guides, Archangels, or even loved ones who have passed on, rather than have the practitioner channel or relay information to them. It’s also important to note if that experience happens, it’s the choice of the client, not the practitioner, to receive whatever communication they’re open to. If a client doesn’t consciously have that type of experience, it doesn’t mean the session was less effective. The beauty of Reiki is it works at the level you’re ready to receive, and every person has a different and unique experience. Erin Musgrave is a Reiki Master practitioner offering sessions by appointment at Phoenix Rising Metaphysics, or by long distance or house calls, incorporating crystal healing and communication with Spirit. She also offers intuitive readings with Oracle and Tarot cards. (512) 318-0098, MusgraveErin@yahoo.com facebook.com/godsgiftreikihealing

I’m reminded of that as a way to introduce information to share with fellow Integratively Minded Austinites (IMA’s). Like fish in water, we exchange with our environment. Water and air seem different, but both act as a medium for exchange, a way for organisms to expel wastes and get precious, lifesustaining oxygen. Our exchange process hasn’t changed for thousands of years. What’s changed is the environment with which we’re exchanging. It’s become increasingly toxic – air we breathe, water we drink, soil we grow food in, ways we communicate, materials for making clothes, cosmetics, houses. Even soap for bathing, containers for drinking, and pastes for brushing teeth contain poisonous substances. What’s an informed person to do? A baby born today already contains over two hundred toxic, non-biodegradable substances, half of which are carcinogenic. This is horrifyingly astounding, but helps us understand the trend we’re seeing. Children are being born with increased cognitive impairments (autism and other spectrum disorders), impaired healing and detox (methylation) systems, and heavy metal poisoning and adrenal fatigue. At birth, human liver, kidney, brain, and immune functions aren’t fully developed or strong enough to deal with the poisons newborns have to contend with today.
As the world becomes more toxic, your brain becomes more toxic. We’re in an osmotic equilibrium with the environment, becoming increasingly affected. The toxic milieu we exchange with supports the growth of unhealthy, pathogenic microbiome in the brain and gut – parasites and infections, strongly interacting with the epigenetic regulation of our genes. We are, in other words, beginning to express less than our genetic best, as epigenetic damage is passed on to offspring, affecting people, animals, and plants, generation to generation. I’ve noticed this in my practice – impaired healing with younger people, and the negative impact mercury and infections from procedures like root canals have on an already weakened and impaired healing and detox system. Several young patients, women eighteen to twenty-five, have had their lives completely derailed by a single root canal. Like Derek Sivers suggested in his article, we’re so
14
surrounded with local culture – in this case, toxins we eat, breathe, bathe, and make love in – we can’t see the universal truths and human rights violated in the name of industry. My intention is to help raise consciousness regarding the truth about what’s happening, and what we can do to alter the course we’re on regarding neuro-inflammatory illnesses like Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s. In the June 2015 issue of NeuroscienceNews.com an article titled Researchers find missing link between the brain and immune system… implications profound for neurological diseases from autism to Alzheimers to Multiple Sclerosis revealed a stunning discovery, overturning decades of false medical training and textbook teaching.
The melatonin connection. Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine determined the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist. Called the glymphatic (glial lymphatic) system, this system is designed to help drain toxins from the brain. Here’s how it works: Each night, when you sleep, your brain cells shrink to roughly sixty percent of their original size, to support drainage of toxins. Melatonin is the most important housekeeping molecule for cleaning the brain, the main antioxidant and detox agent for mercury, lead, and other harmful molecules. It’s the brain’s clearing agent, the hormone stimulating the glial lymphatic system to drain. Melatonin is produced naturally each night when you sleep, but is tied closely to light exposure and your ability to have complete darkness when you’re asleep. It’s only produced in total darkness – any light exposure during the night stops melatonin production, affecting your ability to drain harmful brain toxins. Orally consumed melatonin isn’t as effective as your own natural melatonin.
When you chew, muscles in your face pump lymphatics. Although this isn’t research based, I believe this is why we’re seeing more people grind their teeth during the night – in an increasingly toxic world, the body’s compensating by increasing muscle activity at night through grinding and stress. Research does demonstrate losing vertical height of your face from grinding affects your glial lymphatic system’s ability
to drain – losing 3 mm of tooth structure from grinding could contribute to up to fifty percent less ability for your brain to clear toxins. This has become an important reason in our integrative dental practice to evaluate grinding (bruxism) potential in patients, as it relates to supporting competent brain lymphatic drainage. It’s even been shown “rhythmic skull compressions” during rest and “anterior neck lymphatic drainage” can increase your ability to drain brain toxins. By pumping cerebrospinal fluid through brain tissues, the glymphatic system flushes waste from your brain into your body’s circulatory system. From there, wastes eventually reach your liver, where they’re eliminated. The glymphatic system ramps up at night during sleep, becoming ten times more active than during wakefulness and allowing the brain to clear out toxins – including harmful amyloid-beta, the buildup of which has been linked to Alzheimer’s.
Clean your head. Employing traditional German neural therapy, a technique used at Transcend Dental Health assists drainage of harmful toxins built up in the brain from any number of reasons – unsafe environment (like a dental office using toxic materials, or removing them unsafely), poor sleep, no light control during sleep, history of leaky gut syndrome. We use a safe anesthetic to stimulate ten to twelve different lymphatic areas, including the neck chain, tonsils, and adenoids, resulting in the stimulation of the glial lymphatic system, helping to reduce brain inflammation and toxicity. The entire procedure, taking less than fifteen minutes, is completely safe, with no harmful chemicals. It’s designed to trigger and stimulate your body’s natural channels for drainage, at your own pace. Binders like chlorella, charcoals, or clays are sometimes employed if there’s a potential to drop heavy-metal toxic loads. It’s also helpful to have vitamin C therapy in conjunction with the protocol – affectionately named Clean the Head. We’ve seen tremendous results with this protocol, including immediate improved mental acuity and less brain fog – and, with repeated exposure, improved psychological attitude and emotional wellbeing from reducing toxic loads on the brain. To help patients preventively with brain health, a history and initial exam are taken prior to any therapy, including: Examination. A single digital X-ray and oral exam helps see if you’re exposing your brain to toxic dental materials like nickel, aluminum, and mercury. Sometimes, removing these materials through safe, well-controlled dental procedures
is the first step of any detox program, to slow down or completely stop exposure to substances you wish to reduce. A history of scars. Scars left after removal of tonsils, or scars in bone caused by improper healing after tooth removal or root canal therapy, can allow migration of anaerobic, flesheating bacteria, resulting in dead jawbone tissue up to 5 cm from the treated tooth. These scars act like blocked highways, preventing proper head lymphatic drainage. Removing infection. Head and neck drainage of brain toxins are sometimes improved by removing infected root canaltreated teeth and cleaning out necrotic jawbone infections, called cavitational osteonecrosis. Neural therapy and ozone are sometimes used in conjunction with surgeries at Transcend Dental Health. Family history. Other integrative providers are used to assess genetic inabilities to manufacture and regulate neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, through genetic testing specific for supporting brain detox pathways, muscle-tested for accuracy. Many people have genetic inabilities to drain toxins like metals because of impaired liver or kidney function. Support the body. We frequently recommend homeopathic kidney, lymph, and liver systemic drainage formulas, to reduce your body’s toxic load naturally and safely through improved drainage and support of your body’s intrinsic drainage pathways. We work with integrative providers that can energetically assess many important factors supporting proper drainage – critical to any person wishing to stay well, given the toxic nature of our current world. Legal cannabinoids. We also support brain nourishment, and reduce inflammation, through the use of CBD oils and other legal cannabinoids, shown repeatedly in research to reduce brain inflammation radically and naturally. If you have a history of neurodegenerative disease in your family, are experiencing brain fog related to environmental or occupational exposure, or just want to be proactive about protecting your brain health, it’s possible to push the limits of natural healing, plasticity, and regeneration. Protecting the health of your brain is a God-given right everyone has.
Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, natural alternatives to antibiotics, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, safe mercury and root canal removal, and natural heavy metal elimination. At Your Command
Condensed from Intuition on Demand, by Lisa K., PhD You may think your intuition doesn’t work, or you don’t have intuition. A common thought is, “I think my intuition’s talking to me, but I don’t know what it’s saying. Sometimes, you think you have a gut feeling, but you’re just not sure. You actually do have intuitive powers – you just don’t know how your intuition is talking to you. There are, however, steps you can take to access your real intuition and get valuable information. First, you have to recognize what real intuition is like.
Most of the time, intuition isn’t what you think. It’s not like a full-length movie that tells you the entire plot, or detailed solutions you have to execute in a stepwise fashion. More often, it guides you to the right answer with clues and hints. During your day, you make many decisions, and your intuition’s always communicating with you while you’re deciding. You’re probably unaware of it because your thinking mind is deciding what to do. If you like to argue with yourself as you’re making a decision, you’re more likely to miss what your intuition’s telling you through brief ideas and nudges, which are easily drowned out by internal self-criticism.
How does real intuition work? It’s like walking your dog with a friend. Most of your attention is on your conversation with your friend, but every now and then your dog may pull a little on the leash, or whine to tell you he wants something. If you’re engrossed in your conversation, you may never notice your pet’s telling you something. To help you get the real benefit of your intuition: t ,OPX IPX ZPVS JOUVJUJPO TQFBLT UP ZPV JUT characteristics – part of an image, feelings, pop-up words, short phrases. t #F PQFO UP JOUVJUJWF JOGPSNBUJPO EPO U EJTNJTT JU t 3FEVDF NFOUBM TFMG DSJUJDJTN (P XJUI UIF øPX GPSHJWF yourself regardless of what you decide. Learn an intuition technique that has clear steps that trigger intuition at your command. Practice using it whenever you can. Give your intuition a chance to be noticed. YIN DEFICIENCY Treating Mental Health and Addiction from the Inside Out
by John Harvey, MA, LPC-S, LCDC In the world of Taoism, a balance of yin and yang power is thought to be the essential formula of function. Taoism acknowledges a rhythmic intelligence in life that encourages balance, flow, and attunement to the inner workings of our nature. Yin and yang balance in Western terms can be detected in the Serenity Prayer from Reinhold Niebuhr, the adopted prayer of Alcoholics Anonymous: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, (Yin – letting go) courage to change the things I can, (Yang – empowering action) and the wisdom to know the difference. (Te – inner virtue, skill in living)
Cultivating Wellbeing Since 1996 Austin’s holistic source for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Programming
Integrative Treatment "O JOTJEF KPC In other words, peace of mind and well-being come from an equation that allows innate wisdom to guide appropriate action, to engage life with courage and let go of that which cannot be controlled. Problems in life result from imbalance of these principles – too much control, or too much passivity, can lead to misery. Stagnation, imbalance, inattention, and attachment are conditions of mental suffering. According to Chinese medicine, many mental health diagnoses can be thought of as yin deficient conditions, a depletion of internal (or hidden) resources and structure. In our culture, yang is the more desired power – it manifests itself as exercising control in life, an emphasis on achievement, aggression, ambition, fast pace, and an attempt to purchase happiness. When excessive yang is present, though, yin conditions can be weak, leading to an impoverished spirit – a sense of emptiness, angst, depression, and addiction. Yin deficiency isn’t remedied through imposing more control over one’s demons and diagnoses. That’s the yang solution. Rather, replenishing yin is the appropriate treatment for this condition. Yin cultivation occurs from the inside out, through mindfulness practices that serve to nourish the human spirit and reconnect individuals with their natural, inherent healing abilities. At Northwest Counseling, non-talk therapies help to bring about this balance. Yoga, meditation, qi-gong, and auricular acupuncture are regular components of programming, helping to promote the inside job of serenity. by Christina Allen A psychological counselor can be an invaluable ally when we’re sorting through our emotions and looking for better ways to cope with our wounds. It’s comforting to have a neutral, anonymous person to talk to, as someone who can help us root through our stuff to get a better handle on it. Why then, would you see a shamanic healer? The short answer is, you still feel wounded. Counselors work mind to mind, using their minds to interact with yours. If the root of your problem is imprinted on your soul, talking about it has limited effect. Shamans believe soul sickness is the origin of all mental and physical illness, and operate from the principle that your body and mind are connected to, and informed by, a third body of consciousness. It’s a membrane of light that surrounds your physical body, perceiving the world independently of it. People who have technically died, but who have been brought back to life, report still being very aware of their surroundings, despite their complete loss of neural activity. They also report seeing the whole event from a position outside their body.
This is the perspective of the soul, or lightbody. Not only is it aware, but it stores memories as imprints, especially traumatic and abusive events that we didn’t yet have tools to process. These imprints become triggers that can endure through lifetimes. When the field is imprinted, the energy of the unresolved emotions become crystalized and suspended in time, keeping part of us forever locked in the past. This attracts similar events, creating a pattern of wounding throughout our lives. Simply knowing, however, does not make them disappear. Just talking with a counselor helps us devise healthy ways to sidestep the landmines, but working at the level of the mind doesn’t remove them. In addition to locking our minds in wounding, this unresolved energy is also stored in our bodies, causing stress – and eventually, illness. Many chronic and psychosomatic illnesses can be traced to imprints on the lightbody. When they’re removed, the mind, and the body, can finally release the event.
18
We must actually leave the thinking mind behind, however, to heal the soul. The mind’s efforts to protect us can actually keep us from healing. From the shamanic perspective, we enter a transcendent domain outside of time, outside our minds, and journey to the source of our wounding to heal. From here we can finally release the energy we’ve stored in our bodies and emotions, while the shamanic healer untangles the imprints and other energetic obstructions from our field. It doesn’t mean we relive the trauma – it means we release the energy around it.
Most imprints are not seen clearly by their owners. Often, to move on, we deny the wounded part of ourselves is still hurting, putting it in shadow. If we were truly done, however, we wouldn’t continue to be triggered and have these same recurring themes in our lives. Part of the shaman’s training is to journey past survival tactics we’ve put in place, into the dark places where it’s hidden. Whether it’s conscious to you or not, from this lifetime or from another, the shamanic healer’s job is to help that part of yourself finally heal. The shamanic healing journey is a process. It goes beyond the strategies of your mind and addresses the wounds of your soul. It is a path of awakening. When we finally release these imprints from our fields, and all the energy they store in our bodies and psyches, we’re free to step out of the past and consciously change the course of our lives. Here we find our authentic self, ready to express the passions of our soul instead. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). THE EYES HAVE IT
What can you do when they start to lose it? by Michael Abedin
Things getting a little blurry lately, especially after you’ve been on the laptop the last four or five hours, maybe a break to watch the tube, check your phone? If the big ol’ muscles you’re sitting on are a little stiff and sore from being in one position for so long, imagine what’s happening to another smaller, more precise muscle – the one that focuses your eyes. The ciliary muscle moves the eyeball, changing its shape to change your focal point. Leave it locked in one place for too long, and, like any muscle, it lets you know it’s not happy. The result is pain and fatigue in the eyes, headaches, blurry vision, even double vision – eyestrain. Austin acupuncturist Rama Chitajallu specializes in advanced acupuncture protocols for vision problems, and offers insight into how and why those problems develop. “The eye is designed for movement. In our modern work and living styles, we’re using our eyes to focus for long periods of time on computer screens, TVs, and phone screens. This causes the muscles of the eye to contract, losing flexibility, so the eye finds it difficult to accommodate to quick changes in light or distance.”
A quick check. Roll your eyes in a full circle, clockwise then counter clockwise. Any part your eyes don’t move through easily, almost like they’re jumping over them? That’s a sign of muscle weakness, stiffness, and fatigue. Rama recommends hourly breaks to prevent eyestrain. “Rest your eyes, and move them around. Go outside or to a window and look at clouds, follow a few of them, focus on things further away from you than your screen and change your focal distance frequently.”
She also points out things start to dry out when you focus on your screen and don’t blink. “The eye is a wet place. The vitreous humor, the jelly-like fluid in the eyeball, is about 99% water, so you need to drink lots of water to keep the eyes – and everything else – healthy.” Besides dehydration, other factors that effect eye health include poor circulation to the head from chronically tight neck muscles, chronic systemic inflammation (a possible factor in those pesky little floaters), and blows to the head that can knock the movable sutures in the skull out of whack. Nutrition is important, especially for aging eyes, and kidney and liver health are closely related to eye health – as is sleep.
Don’t go to the light. At least not when you’re sleeping, anyway. It’s important, Rama says, to sleep in complete darkness, or the eye muscles will never completely relax. If you can’t get your sleeping area completely dark, wear a sleep mask – or if you don’t want to greet the day looking like Joan Crawford or the Lone Ranger, put a lightweight cloth over your eyes. Avoid fluorescent lighting, which imperceptibly but constantly flickers, requiring your eyes to make constant adjustments. Natural lighting is best, whenever possible. These are good ways to prevent eyestrain and other vision problems, and may eventually help correct them. There are acupuncture protocols with the potential to speed up the process, however, and Rama is one of the few acupuncturists in the U.S. using one particular advanced regimen – and, no, it doesn’t involve needles in the eye. Most of the points are in the fingers and toes, and the protocol follows a progression of them, accompanied by a nutritional supplement specifically for eye health and easy followup techniques done at home. Like any natural healing technique, it’s a process, not a magic bullet, although a number of people have reported seeing immediate improvement in eyesight. There are other factors that can cause vision problems, and Chinese medicine has the potential to address them as well, but what you might think is more serious problem might be plain old eyestrain, easily addressed. If nothing else, get your nose out of those devices. Seeing the world without a screen is, well – a real eye-opener. Dr. Rama Chitajallu is an acupuncturist, occupational therapist, and energy healer specializing in eye and vision issues. Insurance accepted. (512) 293-5388, www.AcupunctureofAustin.com

by Rick Thompson Whether you’re a paranoid conspiracy nut fearing a coming monetary apocalypse or just a regular person looking to diversify your portfolio, you may have heard about Bitcoin, the world’s leading cryptocurrency. Many notable high-tech moguls claim Bitcoin is here to stay, is now more valuable than an ounce of gold (and easier to spend), and can purchase goods and service anywhere VISA is accepted, worldwide. Bitcoin foreshadows a radical change in the social and economic order. It’s shrouded with a mystique and aura that can be difficult to penetrate, but it’s gaining acceptance every day – Bitcoin ATM machines are popping up everywhere. Google Bitcoin ATM, and you’ll probably see several in your own city. The Bitcoin protocol was first described in a 2008 paper by Satoshi Nakamoto – probably a pseudonym. It’s unclear whether it was developed by an individual or a group, and attempts to identify the developer or development team have been unsuccessful.
What we do know is how the protocol works. At the core of the Bitcoin system is the blockchain a ledger that records the rightful owner of every balance of Bitcoin in existence. When you make a Bitcoin transaction, you effectively announce to the system you’d like to transfer a balance of Bitcoin on the ledger from one owner to another. These transactions are grouped into a block, and members on the system compete to be the first person to confirm that transactions in the block are legitimate. Once a block is confirmed, the ledger, the blockchain, is updated to reflect the most recent transactions. Bitcoin owners are not identified by name or location, but by a string of characters known as a digital address. In other words, bitcoin owners operate under pseudonyms. You can transfer a balance of Bitcoin from one address to another without revealing your actual identity in the physical world – you only verify you own the address from which Bitcoin is being sent. In brief, the Bitcoin system is a public ledger, denoting who owns each unit of Bitcoin available. Transactions amount to debiting one address and crediting another, and public key cryptography ensures transactions are secure. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, I am interested in getting the name of the ascended master that will work closely with me as I develop into spiritual maturity. Sandra, San Antonio, TX Dear Sandra, Thank you so much for your deep and abiding question. Archangel Gabriel is your lucky star and Zadkiel is your highest teacher. Dear Ashtara, I really appreciate your work and events. I can feel a difference within myself that I believe comes from all the practices I have been blessed with being involved with. I do still hold onto a little fear and I would like that to fall away so I can give myself completely with trust again. I would love your assistance. Vickie Dear Vickie, It looks like you are about ready to receive a small windfall, although it could be as long as four years from now. When you do receive it, become aware that there are circumstances involved that you should know more about. Please do not worry about where it will come from. Simply know there is a divine plan for you and your life. Trust is a big word, so thank the Universe for its supply. As you know, you are being guided and are achieving enlightenment. Gabriel is still there for you and so is Sandalfon. Dear Ashtara, I am considering a trip to India in September and October, partially for healing and partially to reconnect with virtual friends. One of these virtual friends I was very invested in and was going to marry, but he chose someone else in India instead. I fell apart over that. Will there ever be a good man just for me? I am a Hindu lady, vegetarian and seeking truth. Enya, 54 Dear Enya, When you go to India, you will turn around in consciousness, take a back step and then realize that your native country is closer than breathing. It will be an exceptional, inspirational, and metaphysically inclined short trip. So, go and enjoy it, for you deserve it. You
26
will meet a new person that you will correspond with when you get home. To meet someone special you probably need to get online and become more proactive. Your highest teacher is Metatron. Your angel is Gabriel. Dear Ashtara, I’ve been told I have an inner path to connecting with a loved one who has passed, or that I could possibly be a medium to the other side. Could you give me insight into how I might go about strengthening this connection? Little Yohe, 31, Austin, TX Dear Little Yohe, When you were born, your angel, Gabriel, reported that you were going to become a channel, medium, and psychic. So far, you really haven’t done anything to reach that potential. However, you are still young and with time on your side all of it will eventually be developed. My advice is to purchase a little recorder and begin to do a few readings for love donations. After that you will know what you want to do. Your high teacher is Ashtar. Dear Ashtara, What is my purpose in this life? How will I be able to provide for myself and be of great value to our society? Julia, Austin, TX Dear Julia, You were born to become a brilliant channel, and because of that I would like to suggest that you navigate your life in such a manner that your Ascended Saints Above adhere to your Mastery. Michael is your angel. Presently, God and Gabriel are your teachers. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone) that include psychic, medical, profound healings, questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted psychic, profound healer and channel from the Ascended Masters/Archangels. The Heartwakers Club
TURN OF PHRASE Havve yourr cakee – and eat itt too o The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli
Since life is shaped by behavior and behavior is programmed by beliefs, we have to ask ourselves just where those beliefs come from. Are they our own observations, ratified by direct experience? Are they based on a real understanding of nature, or rooted in cultural bias and conditioned fears? In short, do they come from the heart, or are they primarily the twittering of verbal abstraction? To be honest, sometimes we just repeat maxims to each other because the words are fun to say, not realizing the power of metaphor to shape our thinking. Take the expression, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” This proverb is often leaned upon to defend various types of self-denial, particularly that you can’t be married and non-monogamous (even though the word monogamous was coined three hundred years after the word marriage, to specify a specific kind of marital configuration). We’re persuaded by the truth of the statement – once you eat your cake, it’s gone.
So then, the metaphor must hold, right? The implication must be true. But wait. You could also say, “It’s totally delicious to eat cake while drinking coffee.” Not so catchy, but you get the point. Just because an idiom makes literal sense doesn’t make it metaphorically valid. In this case, it really doesn’t hold up – and yet countless good-hearted folks have talked themselves out of simultaneous loving relationships, simply because this expression has lodged itself as a roadblock to believing in their worth. If a heart says something’s possible, but its culture says it isn’t, the unconscious is then chained to doubt. With that tether, we can’t fully engage the work it would take to pursue our soul’s first choice. And just like that, a metaphor has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. But let’s not junk this turn of phrase entirely. It does ring true on some level, doesn’t it? Perhaps we’re just reading it with monogamous goggles – understandable, considering most all stories we tell ourselves, and role models we validate, subscribe to that assumption. Instead, let’s triangulate the deeper meaning of these words by studying their equivalent in other languages.
It’s a curious and charming fact that most folk expressions have close cousins in other tongues. Their specifics vary with the variables of daily life – on what’s tangibly relatable in any given culture. In Bulgaria, the sentiment is, understandably, not cakerelated: Не може и вълкът да е сит, и агнето цяло. (You can’t have both the wolf fed, and the lamb intact.) In Croatia they warn: Ne možeš imati i ovce i novce. (You can’t have both the sheep and the money.) In Czech: Nejde sedět zadkem na dvou židlích. (You can’t sit on two chairs at the same time.)
And there are many others. What they all express is that good things command a price. They require sacrifice, and often, hard work. This is certainly true of conventional marriage, and perhaps even truer of marriages that make room for contiguous relationships, where everyone involved must be mindful of tradeoffs, particularly how much time it takes to nourish multiple relationships – time that could otherwise be spent pursuing hobbies, career goals, or simply enjoying quiet moments alone. So I invite you to interrogate any metaphors you might use to deflect the daunting shadow of an unfamiliar idea, which limits the assumptions you hold as to the vastness of your heart.
Speaking of the heart… Let’s not forget it, too, is a metaphor. Our idea that romantic love resides in the heart, which can be given away and even broken – this is the language of monogamous ideology. We each have one heart, after all, and presumably only one person can hold it at a time. Any injury to such a vital organ may well be fatal. What a lot of pressure to put on love! But what if your love were fruit on a tree, plentiful and replenishing, existing to be harvested? What if you trusted that anyone who values your love’s unique flavor will want to stay close voluntarily – even if you both find nourishment in other people’s groves?
