A Letter to Our Readers Long ago, when he veil between worlds was much thinner and humans could come and go in the spirit world, the art of the storyteller was the web that wove society together. The shaman not only travelled to higher realms, he returned with tales, told why there was no rain, why illness had come, what magic to work to return to harmony.

They also returned with a bit of the juju. When you can do that, you’re in great demand. Many weavers of tales traveled from place to place as spiritual warriors, healers, bearers of wondrous gifts from far away. They were welcomed like rock stars, fed and honored, given new gifts for their journey – and, since they were known to be silver-tongued rogues at times, comely daughters were occasionally locked away. Poet, pilgrim, playwright and player – Homer, Shakespeare, the Twisted Hair People of the Native tribes. Their tales portrayed the world around them and, at the same time, shaped its form. The only question, as Kristofferson says, was if the going up is worth the coming down. It is. –Michael Abedin

Isolation Tank Isolation FFloat loat T ank

I

recently completed my second isolation float tank experience. In case you don’t know, an isolation tank is a sensory deprivation tank. You get in this big enclosed humid room, lay nude on ten inches or so of warm salt-saturated water, bubble up to the top like a wine cork, watch the lights and sound go out and just, well, float. No music. No light. Nobody else there. You’re entirely alone. Just you and your thoughts. Not even a cell phone. (Gasp.) For ninety minutes.

So, why would anyone want to do that? Exactly. That’s why I didn’t do it. I had a gift coupon to have an isolation tank experience at The Zero Gravity Institute in Austin, and never used it. Not for five years. I lost it. (Or hid it.) I didn’t care, either, as I couldn’t imagine “relaxing” in a dark room with no stimulation but my breathing, my thoughts, and the salty warm water under my butt. It sounded like an MRI tube, and I hated those. But after five years of avoiding my complimentary tank experience, I was given yet another gift coupon to have one, this time from my wife. I figured the Universe (or my wife) was trying to tell me something, so I called The Zero Gravity Institute and booked my first session. The institute is clinically clean, well kept, and futuristic looking. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew isolation tanks had been around since the 1950s, and friends I trust, such as the publisher of Austin All Natural magazine, regularly did “the tank.” People use tank experiences for ADHD, PTSD, addictions, depression, pain, recovery, spiritual exploration, athletic performance, improved sleep, high blood pressure and, well, the list keeps going. It might grow hair, too. (Or not.)

6

So, what did I have to lose? After a relaxing massage and a quick shower, I was led to the tank. I was surprised to see it large and spacious. You could stand and walk around in it. It was like an enclosed hot tub. Or a covered, shallow swimming pool. When I opened the large door, I felt the humid air and smelled the twelve hundred pounds of Epsom salts. A soft light and gentle music were all I could sense. I got in. I lay back on the thick water and felt myself rise to the top of it, like an inflated human balloon. Or a duck. The lights dimmed to black. The music softened to silence. I lay there, with little stimulation, thinking, “This is different.”

And then all hell broke loose. My mind was driving me up the sides of the tank. It kept going into fear, wondering if I was safe, could I get out, what if I die in here, what if I go mad, and so forth. I desperately reached for the inside door handle several times, just wanting to assure myself that I could find it. I occasionally reached down and pushed through the thick salt water to touch the floor, wanting to be sure I could stand and move if I had to. I sometimes panicked in the dark, floundered about to get a sense of direction, splashed burning salt water in my eyes, and reached for the walls to be sure I could touch one. This went on for at least thirty minutes. I hated it. I told my mind, “Shut up, already!” I remember thinking, “I’ll never last ninety minutes in here!” I started imagining what I would say to the receptionist if I got out early. “Sorry. Stomach upset.” “Sorry. Forgot I had a call with Oprah.” “Sorry. I thought this was for a haircut.” But I let my monkey mind chatter and I kept breathing.

And then something happened. Or maybe nothing happened. The lights started to come up slowly. The music started to

My mind. When it’s just you and your breathing in an isolation tank, your mind becomes the loudest voice in the room. It can also be the most negative, belligerent, and irritating voice. My two tank experiences taught me what I already knew but needed to really feel – our minds are keeping us in fear all the time. Not only in an isolation float tank. All. The. Time. It doesn’t want you to take risks or do anything unusual because you might get hurt. Even when it’s obvious that you won’t get hurt, the mind still keeps talking. Your mind is talking right now, passing judgment on me and this article, warning you not to get in an isolation tank (or do anything out of your comfort zone). Your mind is doing its job in keeping you safe, but it’s also, ironically, performing overkill. You don’t need to be that safe. You’re not being chased by hungry lions and tigers. While in the tank, I’ve learned to observe more closely and detach from my mind. Sometimes I herd my thoughts like cats and nudge them into focusing on my goals for the week. That’s constructive use of my alone time. I call it The Intentional Tank Manifestation. If my mind is going to talk, I might as well give it a task.

play and gently grow louder. Somehow “I” had left and the ninety minutes had passed. And I was euphoric. My brain was dancing with fireworks of delight. I felt completely relaxed, my body felt washed, as if it had been cleansed both inside and out. I got out, showered off, got dressed, and felt giddy. Now this is cool, I thought. In the reception area, I was smiling. I couldn’t stop smiling. The owner told me I just detoxed my body and my mind. Endorphins were dancing. I had gone into an alpha, non-mind state of rejuvenation and relaxation. She added that I would feel the effects for a good week or more after this session. She was right. I slept better, had more energy, was more consistently optimistic and relaxed, and accomplished even more tasks during each day than I normally would, and I’m already a pretty prolific and productive guy. Afterwards, I talked to a few people who had also experienced the tank. They all had battles with their mind the first time. They all realized the monkey mind had to chatter and bite for thirty minutes before it would go on vacation and allow a deeper relaxation to occur. I wasn’t a wuss, after all. I liked the first session so much, I booked a second. The second was easier. I already knew I’d be safe, so I didn’t flounder, reach for the door, or panic. The fight or flight response was gone. I just breathed, relaxed, and observed my mind.

His main website is www.MrFire.com

But at a certain point, about thirty minutes into my tank experience, “I” let go and simply unplug. And that’s where the magic happens. With my mind “off line,” my body can release, my unconscious can process, and I can remain open to inspiration and relaxation. Again, when the lights came back up and music came back on, I was surprised that ninety minutes had passed. Dressed and relaxed, the receptionist asked me how it was. “It’s hard to explain,” I said. “I know I wasn’t thinking in there for ninety minutes, but I don’t know what I was doing if I wasn’t thinking in there.” “You lay in there and think?” “I lay in there and think I am thinking,” I replied. “But in reality, I have no idea what happens in there.” Because I had no idea, I did a little research. Turns out neuro-scientist John Lilly invented sensory deprivation tanks in the 1950s. He and others discovered that complete isolation in a safe place triggered a relaxation even deeper than sleep. The Zero Gravity Institute site explains it this way. The sudden lack of stimulation to large areas of the nervous system triggers a spontaneous chain reaction throughout the body known as the parasympathetic response. Muscle tension, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen consumption all drop dramatically. The entire chemistry of the body changes. The parasympathetic response is the body’s natural mechanism for healing and regeneration. Results of floating have proven to include erased anxiety and fear, and multiplied confidence and healing. Most people experience profound relaxation, release of physical and emotional stress, and more. Creativity increases, moods are brighter, and spirituality is alive. After my second float, I drove home, turned on my computer, and wrote virtually all this article in one sitting. I usually rewrite fifty times. Or more. My next morning’s weight lifting workout was a record-breaker. I was unbelievably strong and energetic. And an interview I did right after it was one of the best in my life – I was calm, articulate, and inspired. I’m booking my next float right now. I’ll make “floating away” part of my self-care, along with massages, good books, music, exercise, healthy food and purring cats. croll through online news on the way to your email, and you’ll likely run the gamut from scary to distasteful. Every now and then, though, you’ll stumble across something pretty cool – like, f’rinstance, that the Chinese set a record back in June for teleportation. (It’s been sort of obligatory in every version of the story to say, no, it wasn’t Star Trek and transporters and Beam me up, Scotty.) What it was, was they took a couple of photons, teeny little quantum-level particles that have the qualities of both a particle and a wave (that are, in other words, matter and energy at the same time) and transmitted information from one in Tibet to one on a satellite hundreds of miles in space – pretty much instantaneously.

Spooky hookups. The process by which they did this, called entanglement, is both complicated and eloquently simple – Einstein his own self called it, “Spooky action at a distance.” Seems if you force enough photons into a small space and get them moving around fast enough, they, well, hook up – basically the same theory operating in drinking establishments on Sixth Street. Chinese scientists, apparently short on titillation, watched them simultaneously change positions. Or something like that. Shamans, seers, and any energy worker who’s ever done a long-distance treatment of any kind (and, turns out, there are a lot of really interesting ways to do them) may not have called it entangling, but they’ve always known that out there in the far reaches of the Universe, and deep in the subatomic levels of every cell, time and space are irrelevant. They also know energetically-coded info is downloading pretty fast hereabouts, sometimes so fast it’s tough to keep up with. The trick? Give it something to work with – give it form of some kind.

8

Upgrade your wiring. In The Teachings of Don Juan, the old Yaqui sorcerer explains to author Carlos Castaneda that, to be a man of knowledge – to be able to handle power – he must learn to extend his will, form himself with the lines of the Earth. Good advice. It’s fun to get downloads, but they’re way more useful (and less likely to fry you to a crisp) if you have a way to ground them, a format to work with. Could be anything from a healing modality to a kundalini meditation to a work of art – and fortunately, we come equipped with builtin tools to upgrade our wiring, as New York City artist Brian Petroski explains eloquently in the description of his August cover piece, entitled:

The Heart Coming: A Rise to Cosmic Consciousness The two most important organs in the human body, our hearts and brains, transmit energy in the form of electromagnetic fields, wave energies affecting everything along their path as they ripple through time and space. The Heart Coming is a piece about something happening as we speak – the next evolutionary leap for mankind. This shift is happening on the inside by taking personal responsibility for what we put out into the world, and by healing emotional wounds and limiting beliefs that stifle our ability to attract what we desire. It’s also about the opening of our hearts. Our vibrations will rise and we’ll begin to create harmony in our own lives, as well as the world over. But the change happens inside, to see the reflections in our external reality – and then perhaps, one day soon, we will meet our cosmic brothers and sisters.

A print of Brian Petroski’s 48” by 60”original painting is in Austin’s Zero Gravity Institute. See his work at www.BrianPetroski.com

UNITY A new era at Unity Church of the Hills If you’re of the holistic, metaphysical, or spiritual persuasion, chances are you’ve heard of or been to Austin’s Unity Church of the Hills. Since 1995, UCOH has hosted regular events featuring some of Austin’s most well known practitioners, along with national presenters of the caliber of Gary Renard and Stephen Co. With their reputation as an event venue, it’s sometimes overlooked that UCOH is, at its core, a spiritual community – a church. Founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore as part of the New Thought movement (granddaddy of today’s Law of Attraction), the Unity organization came about as the result of a miraculous spiritual healing of Myrtle’s tuberculosis. Unity churches have kept their connection to that core value of Christianity – that faith not only can change your life, it can heal you. They’ve also kept alive an even stronger value that, at times, seems to be overlooked by the some of the very institutions created to preserve it. It’s a simple, clear concept.

God’s love and forgiveness is there for everyone, always and equally. That belief was what led a husband and wife team of new UCOH co-ministers to the Unity fold. Last year, the church’s former minister announced plans last year to retire, getting the nudge from Spirit that it was time. Rev. Steve and Mary Bolen were in ministry for over thirty years, the last ten at UCOH, and on his final Sunday in June, the Board of Trustees gave him the lifetime title of Minister Emeritus July opened a new chapter in the life of the UCOH spiritual community when co-ministers Kristen and Brian Grandon began their ministry. Newly wed and new to Austin, Rev. Kristen and Rev. Brian came to the Unity movement from opposite ends of the spiritual spectrum – she was a Lutheran preacher’s kid and he, in his own words, grew up an adrenaline-junkie in a non-churched home, considering himself an atheist. At least he did, until a mystical experience at nineteen created a radical change, turning him into what he now calls “a Christian with questions. It actually started long before that, though, when I was three and was thinking, what am I doing in this little boy’s body?” What, indeed? By twenty-two, he was finding answers as a missionary in the Philippines, feeling a call to the ministry he knew would kick in around his mid-forties. After twenty-five years of charismatic evangelical ministries and some sharing of devotional practices with Buddhist and Hindu friends, Unity became the obvious choice on the spiritual journey that led him to Austin.

God gave me a brain. “In college, I realized if I had a son and he did something horrific, like taking a life, I couldn’t just consign him to Hell – so how could God, who was so much more loving than me, do that?” Powerful words from someone who, like Kristen, was raised a Lutheran, singing the Doxology at full volume (much to her mother’s chagrin). In college, she began a quest to discover a faith more aligned with her inner understanding of God. “God gave me a brain, and I began to read, question, and seek.” The conclusion she reached was elegant in its simplicity. “God is love – and that led me to Unity, which honors all pathways to God.” Unity Church of the Hills, 9905 Anderson Mill Rd., (512) 335-4449. Acupuncture and PTSD The needles and the damage done

by Dr. Rama Chitajallu

W

e’re meant to be happy beings – and then life gets in the way. Physical stress, mental stress, emotional stress. The harmonious interaction between mind, body and spirit is thrown into a furor. Some people apparently seem to recover well, while others need intervention. Apparently is the key word, since there’s no such thing as complete healing from trauma without intervention. There’s always a memory of stress or trauma at some level, even though the person’s “apparently” healed. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) is an umbrella term for a conglomeration of symptoms occurring when an event is so severe it severs the delicate energetic connection between mind, body, and spirit. It came to the forefront with war veterans, but can result from any number of traumatic events – near drowning, rape, sexual or emotional abuse, mugging, natural disasters, car wrecks. Even a school bully could have long-lasting effects on the victim.

What do PTSD sufferers experience? They could have recurring nightmares about the incident, become emotionally numb or unstable, avoid anything triggering memories of trauma, have anxiety or panic attacks. Here are some typical statements: I can’t sleep. I have to check the perimeter every hour. I’m afraid I’ll kill my wife. I startle so easily. I was fine. I didn’t have the usual PTSD symptoms. About a year later I started having heart palpitations. Doctors performed all kinds of tests. They couldn’t find any cause for palpitations. I can’t have a relationship with a man. I stiffen up when a man touches me. I have panic attacks when I see a large body of water.

Traditional western treatment is drugs and psychotherapy. Is this sufficient? Psychotropic drugs have side effects – weight gain, loss of sexual interest, emotional numbness, gastrointestinal disturbances, dizziness, headaches, to name a few. Because of these, and because of the stigma attached to mental illness, many who need help don’t seek it. Psychotherapy may not be effective when someone’s unable or unwilling to recall or talk about experiences that caused the trauma. Someone who’s not centered won’t always be able to benefit much from cognitive therapy. (My husband doesn’t want to talk about the war. He thinks that’ll make things worse.) A treatment is required that will mend fractures in the mind, body, spirit axis without harmful side effects, doesn’t require consciously recalling and recounting painful memories or have a stigma attached to it, and allows someone to heal slowly, from the center of the psyche.

12

The ancient system of acupuncture benefits mind and body healing, helping to bring body and soul together. Initially used by Buddhist monks in India for the purpose of achieving perfect harmony between mind, body, and spirit so their efforts at attaining spiritual perfection would be furthered, the concept was expanded to include healing for physical and emotional ailments. The tiny needles placed in the body activate its innate intelligence, restoring peace and balance without causing further suffering. The effect can be perceived immediately, although the healing may take longer.

This doesn’t necessarily mean medications are to be dispensed with. They’re powerful, though, and should be used judiciously – when someone’s so distraught there’s a danger of suicide, or so restless a powerful sedative is necessary to induce a manageable state. However, in concert with that treatment, the painstakingly delicate task of piecing the whole person together needs to start, and few systems of healing can do a better job than acupuncture. Our brothers and sisters who served this country in war and are still suffering from PTSD symptoms are in particular need of help. Current mental health programs obviously aren’t working well enough – statistics show divorces in military families, suicides, and the number of veterans with chronic mental illness are up, as well as the percentage of vets who turn to drugs and alcohol to numb their senses and not feel the hurt anymore. To help them – and anyone still suffering from trauma – it’s time to look out of the box. Dr. Rama Chitajallu, DSOM, L.Ac, MSOTB, is an acupuncturist, occupational therapist, and energy healer specializing in stress, PTSD, and eye and vision issues. Insurance accepted. FLOATING FREELY Floatation therapy, stress, and PTSD Float therapy is a powerful tool for wellness, offering relief and benefits that build on themselves with each subsequent session. As with any therapy, regular use enhances the benefits. Stress, tension and pain form over time, and it can take time to experience the greatest relief. Luckily, floating is a relaxing, fun, and effortless way to do so.

Stress reduction. Stress has been linked to major causes of death – heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide. Chronic stress is so widespread in our culture it’s estimated over seventy-five percent of all physician office visits are for stress-related ailments. Studies have shown floating can be extremely beneficial for mental health, starting with reducing stress. A low-gravity, totally silent, pitch-black environment gives the mind time to relax, and can dramatically reduce levels of the stress-producing hormone cortisol. During a float, the brain enters an elusive theta brain-wave state, associated with deep sleep and dreaming. Lack of external stimuli is extremely rare in modern society. In the floatation environment, without the hustle and bustle of the world, it’s possible to experience profound calmness of mind. This respite from the world allows for stress management, psychological benefits of a feeling of inner peace, and is a perfect complement to many alternative wellness regimens.

PTSD. Floating has also been effective with other, more abstract mental issues, including depression, psychological issues, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD sometimes develops in people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event, including veterans, victims of assault or other trauma, and can cause outbursts of anger, depression, recurring traumatic memories, nightmares, and social anxiety. Researchers are beginning to recognize floatation therapy as an effective treatment for PTSD, particularly for military combat veterans. There are ongoing efforts to offer holistic and alternative therapies to veterans, including acupuncture, homeopathy, and energy healing, and floating has turned out to be both a good stand-alone therapy, and a good complement to other natural techniques. Some PTSD sufferers are finding float therapy to be an extremely effective therapy, since the float tank offers an environment that allows the brain and nervous system to address trauma or memories they’ve previously suppressed or been unable to process. True Rest Austin, 10721 Research #B-170, 78759. Veterans float for free on the eleventh day of every month. (512) 432-5189, or visit www.Facebook.com/True Rest Austin

TIES THAT BIND Quantum Reiki and energetic cords

by Michael Abedin

ou know the feeling. You’re tied to something, and it won’t let go. You’re not even a hundred percent sure you’re ready to let it go. In the meantime, it sucks up your thoughts, your emotions – your energy. Sometimes, you get real strong and pull back, think you’ve got it under control. You feel pretty good about yourself for a while, but then that old tug of war starts again, back and forth. There are a lot of ways you connect to other people, and to places, things, and ideas. Some of them are nice, productive connections – a mutual flow of energy benefiting everyone concerned. Others are push-pull connections that may seem to benefit one side or the other, but in the long run, the only real benefit is to the connection itself, mindlessly and relentlessly feeding on the energy it generates. One day you’re winning, the next you’re pulled over to the other side. To get your juju back, you pull harder. Eventually you get tired of the game – time to cut the cord, sever the connection, move on.

Which may be the worst thing you can do. Cords can be thought of as metaphors rather than actual connections, but clairvoyants describe them as rope-like beams of energy. There are a lot of modalities that teach how to cut them, but there’s a drawback to most of them. Cords are like weeds sucking up water and nutrients in your garden. Cut down a weed, and you know what happens – it grows back, even stronger. Only thing to do is pull it up, roots and all. Cut a cord and leave the roots, and it will find something else to attach to. That said, there are cord-cutting procedures that follow strict energetic hygiene, including techniques for getting the roots and disposing of the whole mess completely and safely. Still, there are implications, and not the least of them is the question of who’s doing the work. Quantum Reiki teaches practitioners they aren’t doing the healing, they’re simply giving recipients the energetic tools to heal themselves. It approaches cords the same way, incorporating a technique that, strictly speaking, isn’t Reiki, but can come in handy by allowing you to release your own cords, with the practitioner’s help.

First step is to identify the pesky things. Cords are usually found near chakras, the energetic centers of the body. Got an old lover who can pull you right back in with a glance, a phone call, even a stray thought? Second chakra, emotional and sensual center. Still struggling to let go of spiritual beliefs you thought you’d left behind ages ago? Crown chakra, your connection to the Divine. (Those are particularly insidious, and are how cults make their followers dance like puppets on strings – or even commit mass suicide.) Because perception and protective shields are usually stronger in front, cords are usually found on the back, near the appropriate chakra. Practitioners describe them as feeling cold, hollow, or empty, like a black hole. Since Quantum Reiki practitioners never diagnose or tell clients something’s amiss, the procedure is to ask if the recipient feels something in that area, and if they know what it is. (If it’s a cord, they usually know.) If they say they’re ready to let it go, the practitioner floods the area with Reiki symbols, tells the recipient how to release the connection with a set of breathing techniques, and fills the area back up with Reiki energy. Best way to deal with cords, of course, is not to get them in the first place, and the good (and maybe bad) news is you really can’t be corded against your will. There are no victims, it’s said, only volunteers – the vampire has to be invited in before he can bite you. It’s easier said than done to keep your nose clean, but common sense and awareness go a long way. Once a cord’s released, you might find it’s time to move on, but you might also find that the nature of the relationship – whether it’s to a person, a job, or a fixation of any kind – has changed so radically that a whole new form of loving and beneficial connection can grow. EDS

Clearing the tracks with ElectroDermal Screening

by Karen Reines

E

lectroDermal Screening (EDS) is a non-invasive process designed to measure electrical currents in the body, much like an EKG measures electrical activity in the heart. The computerized EDS device and software interface measures the flow of electrons throughout the body, allowing a technician to conduct a sort of interview with the body’s organs and tissues, detecting energy imbalances along invisible lines of the body – the acupuncture meridians. Meridians are like a railroad of energy running through the body, and illness, inflammation, toxins, and other factors can cause resistance down the line. EDS can detect specific changes in resistance – if there’s a blockage of energy on the track, it will be revealed.

The information uncovered involves more than just meridians, though. The EDS interface measures the frequencies of toxins. Viruses, bacteria, parasites, heavy metals, fungus, candida, chemicals – all have a specific frequency. If a virus is in the body, the EDS has the potential to pick up this frequency and remedy the situation with an extensive database of healing

remedies, including homeopathics, radionics, herbs, whole foods, vitamins, minerals, flower essences, and gem elixirs. This custom detection and solution process allows cutting edge alternative healing. There’s no guessing as to what remedies to give a patient, as the patients themselves are screening for the precise remedy that will benefit them. EDS had its earliest roots in galvanic skin testing, discovered in the early 1900s, which measured electrical resistance of the skin with moisture. In the 1950s Reinhold Voll, a West German physician and acupuncturist, combined acupuncture theory with galvanic skin response technology. By testing the skin along various points, with particular attention to the acupuncture meridians, galvanic skin response testing became known as ElectroDermal Screening. EDS and its computerized biofeedback analysis is endorsed by many doctors and dentists in the US, and the technique is also used in the most progressive institutions in other countries throughout the world – Germany, France, England, South America, China, Canada, and Australia.

Why get tested? There are many organisms, substances, and stressors in modern living that alter normal body processes. Many symptoms are associated with these disturbed energy imbalances. The main objective of ElectroDermal Screening is to get to the root cause of illness and eliminate the imbalance. EDS has the potential to benefit: Allergies Attention disorders Bacterial infections Blood sugar imbalance Chemical toxicity Depression Fatigue Headaches Heavy metal toxicity Hormonal imbalances Hyperactivity Improper diet Infertility

Irritability Joint discomfort Painful muscles Parasites Pesticides Poor digestion Recurring colds and flu Recurring infections Sleeplessness Stress Viruses Vitamin/mineral deficiency Weakened immune system

What to expect. During a typical one-hour screening, a brass cylinder is held in one hand while the technician takes a small hand-held probe connected to a computer and gently presses specific meridian points on the other hand. The computer measures the degree of electrical resistance. These measurements detect the balances and imbalances of the organ systems and tissues in the body. Imbalances reveal disturbances that weaken the body’s immune system leaving it vulnerable to disease. Based on the data collected, the technician then offers a personalized natural therapy program, using high-quality professional product blends. The EDS device is then used to monitor progress, avoiding much trial and error. By eliminating identified imbalances and strengthening the immune system, the body can become a fortress against illness and disease. Karen Reines is certified in ElectroDermal Screening (EDS), based in San Antonio, and a trainer certifying others in EDS. (210) 394-8682, www.BetterHealthNowNaturally.com

here are truths we just don’t want to speak aloud. Sometimes we think they’ll hurt someone, so we lie. Other times, we don’t want to face the consequences of an action we took, or who we are for taking it. Alternatively, we want something, like a job or a date, and we aren’t going to get it if we tell the truth – and then there’s lying by omission, things we don’t admit to, to keep the peace. Speaking your truth is more about finally expressing an opinion than it is negating the truth. This is about honesty. While some lies are white and others grey, some lies are boldfaced black lies. Whatever the color is, it creates shame within you to tell it. Like clouds of yellow smoke, this shame sits between you and yourself, tarnishing your honor.

Telling the truth takes courage. People’s feelings might get hurt, or we might not look good. We may tell ourselves we will tell them the truth later when they (or we) are stronger and can handle it. Bonding, however, occurs through having true and authentic exchanges. When we lie to someone so they’ll still love us, or feel better about us, we can no longer trust in that love. It’s a reality braced by the scaffolding of lies. We want a person who accepts who we truly are, warts and all. Every time we lie, we deprive ourselves of emotional intimacy. Closeness comes from being vulnerable and sharing, even when it’s difficult. We fear we won’t get what we want if we’re honest, but if we can’t say how we really feel, what we’ve really done, who we’re really seeing, or what we like and don’t, we can’t have a real exchange about it.

Sometimes that’s the point. Conflict terrifies us. But these lies also let us avoid what the true problem is. As long as we lie about our actions, we remain unable to address the dark dysfunction behind them. This leaves our relationships to wither and die away, becoming far more functional than intimate.

18

Relationships based on lies and deception, even well intentioned, are lacking in respect. If we’re lying because otherwise they’ll say no, we have decided whether they can handle the truth, instead of giving them the chance to struggle with their objections and reflect on their limits. We cannot learn to trust, or grow, if we’re not given opportunities that challenge our fears. When we lie to another to keep the peace, we’re stealing from them a chance to evolve. Further, as we enable them, we also lose our respect for them, because apparently they can’t handle the truth. Let’s face it, though. When we save someone by lying to them, we’re really just sparing ourselves from embarrassment or struggle. True intimacy comes from knowing your truth and sharing it, even if it’s difficult. We grow closer by honoring each other, and seeing the other as capable of working through their differences with us. When we choose to lie, it’s really to save ourselves. Worse than lying to someone else, by making this choice, we’re lying to ourselves.

You can feel the emptiness of a lie. It’s hollow. It creates shame that seeps down into the corners of who you are, and makes you not like – or respect – yourself. It dims your light, sinking you into a sea of selfloathing, separating you from who you truly can be. The truth has its own solid frequency that rings within you when spoken. While it’s definitely harder to speak it, find your courage. Through it, you will attract higher vibrations of reality. Honor your self – and keep your truth burning bright. ooted in ancient wisdom, naturopathic medicine is a unique, proactive system of holistic care emphasizing prevention, self-healing, and long-term wellness, using natural therapies. With challenges in modern healthcare, it’s gaining interest. Naturopathic therapeutic modalities – nutritional supplementation, lifestyle counseling, herbs, homeopathy, hydrotherapy – are supported by extensive research in peerreviewed journals from many disciplines, including clinical nutrition, botany, pharmacognosy, and psychology. Naturopathic doctors work in private practices, hospitals, clinics, and integrative community health centers. Common ailments seen are allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. NDs are trained to perform minor surgeries, such as removing cysts or stitching up superficial wounds, and utilize prescription drugs as necessary (although they emphasize less toxic substances that promote natural healing first, following a specific therapeutic order). Like MDs, a growing number of naturopathic doctors choose to specialize or focus their practices. In Texas, NDs are not yet licensed as primary care physicians, and can’t diagnose, treat disease, or prescribe medication, instead serving as adjunctive care and wellness educators working with other licensed care providers.

Naturopathy follows a set of basic principles: The healing power of nature. (Vis Medicatrix Naturae) Recognize the body’s inherent ability to heal itself, and focus on removing obstacles to recovery. Identify and treat causes. (Tolle Causam) Rather than suppress symptoms, which can promote harmful corrective patterns, NDs identify and remove underlying causes. First, do no harm. (Primum Non Nocere) Respect the individual’s healing process, using the least invasive intervention. Doctor as teacher. (Docere) Value relationships with patients/clients, prioritizing education and self-care. Treat the whole person. (Tolle Totum) Each individual

is treated in a unique manner, taking into account physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social factors, and spiritual wellness. Prevention. (Prevenir) Emphasize disease prevention, assessment of risk factors, and hereditary susceptibility to disease, offering appropriate interventions to prevent illness. Because environmental health impacts life, promote sustainable environmental practices.

Prerequisites, education, and licensure. In addition to biological and chemical science undergraduate prerequisites, NDs require the same rigorous basic science curriculum as allopathic and osteopathic schools. Accredited naturopathic medical schools are four or five-year programs consisting of a minimum of 4100 hours of class and clinical training (including over 1200 hands-on, supervised patient contact hours). “Licensed or regulated naturopathic doctors receive rigorous academic education and hands-on training as primary care physicians, comparable and complementary to that of conventional MDs,” explains JoAnn Yánez, executive director of the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges. “Some go on to specialize in medical disciplines such as oncology or pediatrics, but all emphasize prevention, and are uniquely positioned, alone or together with conventional MDs and other health care providers, to play a central role in providing Americans with better health outcomes at a lower cost.” Naturopathic doctors are currently licensed or registered as health care providers in nineteen states. In these states, NDs are required to graduate from an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical school and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination to receive a license. The Texas Association of Naturopathic Doctors is currently working towards licensure in the Lone Star State.

Why see a Naturopathic Doctor? Naturopaths take time to listen and understand genetic, environmental, behavioral, and lifestyle factors affecting your health. At an initial appointment, you’ll spend up to an hour or more talking with your ND, leaving with a plan uniquely tailored to your goals, predisposition, and lifestyle. Common problems like insomnia, joint pain, skin issues, and indigestion can be managed by mainstream medicine, but your Naturopathic consultation will focus on root causes, not just symptom management. You’ll be given alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs – ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or opioids – that can cause kidney or liver damage with long-term use, and can actively participate in managing your own wellness. Note: Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are not yet licensed in Texas. Contact your primary care physician if you have health concerns. DENTISTRY D ENTISTRY & N NATUROP ATUROPA ATHY THY Dr. D r Matthew Matt tth hew Carpenter, Carpentter D DDS, DS NM NMD D Why would a dentist want, or need, to get a naturopathic license? Simple – to get closer to root causes of patients’ health challenges, oral and systemic, offer options safe and supportive to their natural biology, shatter barriers segregating medical specialties, and treat patients comprehensively with diet, supplementation, detoxification, digestion – and do it all naturally, without man-made or prescription medications. Synthetic pharmaceutical drugs are known to thwart your body’s natural healing processes, energy production, and mitochondrial function. Quite frankly, they create new illnesses. I practiced allopathic dentistry for nearly a decade before realizing I was poisoning my patients (and their offspring) with mercury, increasing their propensity for heart disease, autoimmune illness, and cancer, and putting lives at risk doing dentistry the way I was taught in dental school.

Here’s what naturopathy has brought to my practice:

ü Safe, natural ways to help anxiety with CBD oils, homeopathics, and mental field therapy. Laughing gas is still available, as is IV sedation, but with what’s being discovered about how nitrous oxide can wreck a methylation-impaired system, safer options for anxiety are critical. ü Traditional German homeopathic drainage formulas to open up lymph, liver, and kidney drainage before mercury fillings are removed, preventing the dreaded detoxification/ retoxification my mentor, Hal Huggins, talked to me about. ü Antioxidant and vitamin infusions strengthen immune systems when removing mercury and root canals, ozone therapy naturally and effectively treats dental infections, and I almost never prescribe antibiotics. ü Traditional German neural therapy resets patients’ autonomic nervous systems where they’ve experienced past physical, chemical, or emotional damage. ü Ingenuity, a truthful understanding of the body, and all-natural products can completely control periodontal disease, usually without surgery or senseless (and painful) cutting away of gum tissue. ü Reducing infectious loads from root canals and bone infections prior to treating them results in faster, more comfortable healing and recovery. ü Headaches can be treated and sinus and tonsil infections can be eliminated naturally, without addictive or damaging prescription drugs. And that’s just the beginning. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health recently completed naturopathic medical certification through the American Board of Integrative Medicine and Dentistry, and is a Board Certified Naturopathic Physician. Transcend Dental Health offers natural oral care products incorporating essential oils, drillfree air abrasion, ozone therapy, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, safe mercury and root canal removal, and natural heavy metal elimination. The Heartwakers Club

HOW TO RETIRE FROM PARENTHOOD The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli

F

amily is (hopefully) forever, but in some ways parenting is a job like any other. We work, put in our hours, and then retire. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to go. Admittedly, few of us can bring ourselves to pull back when the time comes – or even recognize this shift as a happy, natural thing. In subtle (usually accidental) ways, parents punish their children for growing up. We butt against their political autonomy, their sexual maturity, their admirable lack of blind obedience. We struggle to forfeit control over the culture of the family unit, and allow those growing pains to live on as guilt on their shoulders. On top of that, the concept of paternal retirement is decidedly abstract. The punctuation to our term of service is less obvious, which is perhaps why we rarely talk about parenthood as a phase of life with an achievable goal. But isn’t there one? Namely, keep our offspring safe until they know what they need to figure things out on their own. When we fail to pivot out of the parent-child dynamic, upcoming and outgoing generations get locked into mutually exclusive roles that can’t collaborate or teach each other. Younger adults get a signal from us they’re still not quite grown up, can’t quite trust themselves. They hold onto that imposter syndrome and sabotage their independence, or get annoyed and push us away, outright rebel, or simply allow the relationship to be strained and shallow. So how can we prepare to welcome our offspring into the arena of adulthood – and show them we indeed expect they’ll come to equal our good judgment? Shift your attitude early. Remember that your job is not to protect your kid from ever making a mistake, but to model how to learn from mistakes, how to cautiously test their own boundaries so they can make wise choices. Only offer advice when they ask for it. Once your kid’s grown enough to be out of the house, strapping a life together, assume they’ve accumulated enough personal experience to possess valid theories and opinions, even if they contradict yours. Your job now is to be a willing mentor, confidant, role model, and enlightened friend. I’m sure you

24

have great advice, but if you turn every conversation into a lecture (or even a pep talk), you’ll be shutting down the richness of a rapport between peers, robbing them of the pleasure of epiphany. Look to learn from them. There’s no greater vitamin you can give a relationship than asking to know someone better, showing respect for their opinions. We parents may have been on Earth longer, but we’re also attached to versions of it that have passed away. As those old worlds take up space in our head, along come these alert young people furiously gathering all the data they can on How Things Actually Are. Learn from them! We truly need each other to get the fullest picture. Don’t tell them who they are. Yes, you once knew your child best. But you don’t know them better than they know themselves by the time they’re twenty-five. Everyone has blind spots (us too!), so no need to harp on that. It’s important to realize a lot of what we think we know about our kids’ character is how they behave when they’re around us. Young children develop early behaviors to protect their relationship to parents. Unconsciously, they cultivate traits that jive best with our values, our wounds. Some of what we considered essential to their personality may need to be dismantled before our eyes. They will seem to change. And though it’s difficult for us to watch them choose loyalty to their path over loyalty to our needs, we should be relieved and proud. It takes courage to disappoint your parents for the right reasons. Cash your paycheck. Parents don’t get paid in a perfectly obedient adult child. We get paid with an opportunity, the opportunity to witness the unfolding of consciousness up close – as close as any other human can get – and hopefully we use that opportunity to learn something about human nature, about ourselves, about the world, its potential, and its mystery. Zaeli is a writer, comic, and love coach here to help bring consciousness and intention to your emotional life. Catch the debut of her new monthly comedic showcase, We’ll Pray For You, at Coldtowne Theatre August 23. More at www.ZAELI.net

If that does not describe the man you love, I must be talking about someone else. So, hang in there knowing that your true love is either the one you are with or someone on the periphery. Your high teacher is Melchizedek and your angel is Gabriel. Talk to them and you will begin to receive many messages.

is our supply. Another one is, “Don’t worry, be happy.” Amazing, that your dilemma becomes your grandiose supply from heaven above. Hang in. Presently, your teacher is Lord Maitreya and your angel is Gabriel.

Dear Ashtara, I so badly want to retire. Do you see me retiring any time soon due to the success of my books, and me moving my child and I to a better place? N.A., 35, Austin, TX Dear N.A., Retirement will come in your fifties, as well as a promotion that you can depend on. You will be very lucky to be able to spend more time writing, reading, canoeing, etc. But for the time being, get satisfied with several jobs that you can also depend upon. You should get proactive right now and decide who you really are in the workplace. Am I an accountant, lawyer, or engineer? Those are the particulars that were laid out according to your Akashic Records when your soul was birthed in the beginning. It just so happens that “author” is next, so put on a “happy cap” and decide that you need to get a good job and become an author at the same time. And remember, we say that an author gets it published, and a writer writes it down. Your high teacher is Ashtar and your angel is Uriel.

Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone) that include psychic, medical, profound healings, questions answered and more. POLE POLISH The Capital of Texas Aerial Championships by Michael Abedin

Athleticism comes in different packages – long and lean dancers, rippling bodybuilders, martial artists with reflexes quick as a cat. Wrap that up in one package, throw in a little sexiness, and hang it upside down on a pole, a hoop, or a piece of fabric. You’ve got one of the coolest (and hottest) athletic endeavors there is – aerial arts. Pole dancing is probably the best known aerial art, with a history that goes back long before it became a staple of, shall we say, gentlemen’s clubs. Over eight centuries ago, wrestlers in India practiced mallakhamb, a conditioning routine best described as yoga and wrestling techniques on a vertical pole.

Silks, slings, and hoops. You can also get vertical and get fit on silks (pieces of fabric with two long tails), lyra (metal hoops hanging in the air), hammocks (as the name implies, a fabric sling) or even a traditional trapeze bar. There are several schools in Austin teaching aerial arts, and regular showcases around town. Since the ultimate test of athleticism is competition, there’s also a competitive aerial arts event, the Capital of Texas Aerial Championships. The two-day event, open to women and men, showcases non-pole aerial events the first day and pole divisions, from amateur to professional (including partner competition), the second. Before you get any ideas about grabbing a handful of bills to stuff in the G-strings of either gender, be aware that this is indeed an athletic event. While some of the dancers have been employed at said gentlemen’s (or ladies’) clubs and the costumes are sexy, they stay on. These are serious athletes that train hard, and have the muscles – and occasional bumps and bruises – to show for it. If you’ve ever marveled at a ballet dancer executing a leap, a skater spinning like a dervish, or a martial artist whipping off a blazing jump spin kick, imagine that kind of grace, power, and focus suspended in the air, on a pole or a flowing piece of fabric that lets the performer completely defy gravity – dropping, sliding, spinning, and coming to a complete stop in virtually any position. Takes a bit of polish. The Capital of Texas Aerial Championships, August 25-26 at Palmer Event Center. Information, tickets: www.CapitalofTX.com
