A Letter to Our Readers Remember 2016, right there at the end? Fun, huh? Let’s say on New Year’s Eve, you wrote down everything you were fed up with on pieces of paper, went out in the backyard and built yourself a fire, and at the stroke of midnight tossed them in one at a time and watched them burn – and immediately felt better.

Let’s say on New Year’s Day . . . You realized you’d forgotten something, built another fire, and tore up the 2016 calendar and tossed it in, a month at a time, and felt even better still. (That heavy stock with colored ink burns with a nice colored flame, huh?) When it burned down to coals, you put out the fire – well, let’s say cowboy style, felt really good, and settled in to wait for 2017, when everything would be groovy again.
How’s that working out? Here it is October, and if the last few months haven’t been the craziest time of your life, you’re probably not paying attention. As the end of October looms, just remember those three little words. Trick or treat. –Michael Abedin

Loving Louise Hay by Dr. Joe Vitale
S
elf-help legend Louise Hay has passed away, on the morning of August 30, 2017. She was ninety, and made the transition peacefully in her sleep, at her home. She influenced millions with her books, including me. One of the highlights of my life was having dinner with her about ten years ago. She openly shared her life, mission, and home with me. She said, “The more people you help, the better your life will be.” Her first book, Heal Your Body, was privately published by her in 1976 – when she was fifty years old.
That “little blue book” went on to become a self-help classic. She bought me dinner and we talked about everything from The Secret movie, to Jerry and Esther Hicks and Abraham, to Operation YES, my movement to end homelessness. She showed interest in my life and work. She asked questions. She listened. Back in her San Diego home, she gave me so many signed copies of her books that I began to feel uncomfortable.
“What’s wrong?” she asked. “Do you have a problem receiving?” I got over it. I opened my arms to receive more. She was warm and wise. She will live forever in her books and through her company, Hay House. I am forever grateful to her, and will always miss her. Thank you, Louise. I love you. PS – A few years ago Louise Hay’s company published the book I coauthored with Daniel Barrett, The Remembering Process, which remains a milestone in my career.
MEETING LOUISE HAY Here’s the story of our dinner together, first published in 2008… Louise Hay is the Queen of the New Age, Law of Attraction, think-it-and-you’llattract-it movement. She met us at the door and smiled, her eyes twinkling and her smile charming. Her books are classics, from Heal Your Body to Empowering Women. She’s eighty-one years old, young, and as vibrant as a teenager. Her I Can! events are sold out pep-fests where people get enough juice to last a year. Louise is known as one of the founders of the self-help movement. Her first book, Heal Your Body, was published in 1976, long before it was fashionable to discuss the mind-body connection. It was revised and expanded in 1998. It’s still considered a classic today. Louise helped me personally over the decades, without her knowing it, with her messages of insight and uplift. I used to read her question and answer section in the back of Science of Mind magazine. It helped me hang in there and focus on what I wanted.
6
It worked, too.
“I know I don’t have to,” Louise countered, smiling. “Are you just going to dismiss the good you are offered?” Of course, Scott then accepted a book.
But the best part of all was getting to ask Louise questions.
I asked what she thought of all the movies coming out since The Secret.
Her joy in life is to find new authors and promote them to the world. She’s very excited to have acquired Abraham, brought to you by my friends Jerry and Esther Hicks. Their latest book, Money and the Law of Attraction, is already a bestseller. Louise travels a lot. She has offices all over the planet. She had only returned from Australia two days earlier when we met her. She didn’t seem travel weary at all, though. She radiated health. Scott and I had traveled from Austin to San Diego that very morning and showed more exhaustion than Louise. She has an office, and an assistant, right in her penthouse. She showed me some of her paintings, too, which I imagine is a rare treat. I had never heard of her art interests before. Our conversation covered many topics, including health.
She said there are more Indigo children born today, and they don’t like to read. They need visuals. As a result, she made her own movie, too, You Can Heal Your Life. I told her about a female friend of mine suffering from tumors in her uterus. I asked what Louise would do. She said forgiveness, a nutritionist and a good Oriental doctor would help. She added that most women don’t take care of themselves because they focus on others. She said my friend needs to express her creativity and love herself, too. But what if someone isn’t willing to change? “They have to be ready,” Louise asked. “Can you make them ready?” I asked. “No one knows why each of us has the challenges we do,” she explained. “They have their lessons and we have ours. You have to take care of you.” I asked her what book influenced her the most. She said The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Shinn. (Hay House later published it.) I asked her what book she was currently reading. She said Success Intelligence by Robert Holden. (She said the photo on the book made the author look like he was twelve years old.) As I looked around her penthouse and saw the museumquality furnishings, I thought she reeked of prosperity. But Louise said she’s never focused on money, saying, “I just ask ‘How can I serve?’” Her first book, a twelve-page pamphlet, evolved into her bestselling classic Heal Your Body. Three hours later, I hugged and thanked Louise for the evening. I felt as though I had sat with a legend, and was torn between asking loads of questions or just sitting in gratitude. So I did a little of both.
She said almost every health problem had to do with anger and resentment. When she got cancer, she realized she had to forgive in order to heal. She knew her issue was with her parents. She looked at their childhood, saw how they had been raised, and was then better able to understand and forgive them. As a result, she became cancer-free. She didn’t know much about me or my work. To resolve that, I gave her copies of The Attractor Factor and The Key. I also told her about Operation YES, my infomercial on The Awakening Course, and other projects I’m involved in, including my Miracles Weekend. Louise said she hadn’t heard anything about the Miracles Weekend. That’s when I realized I had marketed to my email list, but not to San Diego. We can all use reminders. There’s always more we can do. She let me pick from whatever book I wanted in her office, and I chose Letters to Louise, which she autographed. She offered a book to Scott, who said, “You don’t have to do that.”

Look at me today. Given all the above, you can imagine my delight to be able to have an evening with Louise Hay. She invited me and my personal fitness trainer, Scott York, to her multi-million dollar penthouse overlooking everything in San Diego. We were there for the Steve Reeves film and fitness festival, and to see the 1976 Jag XJS I bought that was originally owned by Steve Reeves – Hercules. The view from Louise’s penthouse was spectacular. She poured champagne for us while she pointed out the park, the ocean, the airport, and the other buildings. She loves San Diego, saying, “It doesn’t have any humidity or bugs.” She took us to dinner at another high-rise location, where we could see planes come in over the top of office buildings as they landed at the in-city airport.

And you know something is happening but you don’t know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones? – Bob Dylan, Ballad of a Thin Man
T
he October Country, along with The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man, is a fine collection of tales by American author and screenwriter Ray Bradbury, a storyteller who could quietly weave fantasy and the macabre from the simplest things of ordinary life. October Country is a land of carnivals and funhouse mirrors, of mysterious jars, of cemeteries in a Mexican village.
Makes sense. October is when the veil becomes thin and you’re no longer sure what’s real or unreal, when ancient monsters and pumpkin-faced goblins rule, when the sideshow freaks, bloodsuckers, and stealers of souls rule the day. And that’s just the ten o’clock news. (Or social media, 24/7.) Bradbury began writing every day of his life in 1932, when he was twelve and was knighted on the nose by an electric sword wielded by a carnival performer named Mr. Electrico. His hair stood on end, and Mr. Electrico shouted out a command – Live forever! While there are people on the planet to read them (or very intelligent cockroaches, if we keep going like we are), his books will live forever. Bradbury himself departed for his next stop in 2012, long enough to bemoan way too many cellphones and internets, as he put it.
Lights and shadows. Although he became a screenwriter and a number of his books became movies, Bradbury didn’t need a screen to tell a story, didn’t need car chases or explosions. He turned things you knew, things your mind could grasp, into objects of mystery, fantasy, even horror – the bones inside your body, a man whose tattoos could tell stories, spacemen on a planet where it never stops raining. He wove lights and shadows with words, beguiling you into following him into the tale.
8
You know something’s happening. Unlike poor Mr. Jones, though, alone and lost in Dylan’s world of sword-swallowers and geeks, you know what it is when you get good and beguiled, know you put your quarter in the slot to take the ride. You have to open the book, listen to the song, meet the stranger’s glance – the guy in black with the gunfighter walk, the dark-haired girl in the red gypsy, Apache, fortune teller bandana, made up for the Day of the Dead and looking over her shoulder with eyes that tell you everything and nothing.
Feels good, huh? Of course it does – it’s magic, and you get to help create it. No one likes getting fooled, but everyone likes getting beguiled, mesmerized, taken down the rabbit hole every now and then. Some even like living there, and they’re the ones who make things interesting, the riders on the storm, time travellers, and shapeshifters. A bit of shapeshifting ain’t a bad way to weather the rough patches. Cowboy up – saddle that storm and ride it. Beats whining about retrogrades, eclipses, hurricanes, geopolitical craziness, and all that there.
Better yet, Indian up. Ask the People, the Native tribes, the only real nonimmigrants hereabouts. They long ago learned to live like Coyote, the master shapeshifter, taught them, slipping in and out of the world until the Ghost Dance returns, and everything gets back from normal again. If you’re quiet – if you let go of ideas and solutions, if you watch and wait patiently – the magic comes. This month’s cover art, Rainfall, pretty much descended from the heavens. After much agonizing, at precisely the moment when it was decided October’s working cover wasn’t, well – working – it showed up from Austin Artist Kuli, unbidden and unexpectedly, and became his encore cover. Pretty beguiling, huh? Ray Bradbury, who thought about being a magician instead of a writer, would love it.

BECOMING AN ARTREPRENEUR Austin Art Business Summit October 21-22 Well I’m just tryin’ to stay alive And keep my sideburns, too. – Leon Russel, Tryin’ to Stay ’Live Ray Wylie Hubbard, singer, songwriter, and consummate storyteller who gave us such tender ballads as Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother and Screw You, We’re from Texas, was part of the Cosmic Cowboy heyday of Austin music about the same time Leon was tryin’ to keep his sideburns. When he was a kid, he announced to his mom he wanted to be a country singer when he grew up. “Make up your mind, son,” she told him. “You can’t do both.”
Sad but true. Artists of any kind – musicians, writers, actors, painters, designers – often become artists precisely because they don’t listen to their inner grownup (and the rest of the world), telling them they just can’t make a living creating songs, stories, or pretty pictures. Thing is, if you’re a true artist, you can’t not create your art, so the question becomes how to stay creative – and stay alive. Long ago, it was a mark of social status for wealthy patrons to support an artist, a fine custom that would solve a lot of folks’ problems if it were to be revived. In the meantime, if you don’t look that good in a cubicle or behind the counter of a fast-food joint in a paper hat, it behooves you to get some left-brain training. An independent artist who wants to remain independent has to become an entrepreneur – and entrepreneurs need both brains. The Arts Business Institute (ABI), a national group helping visual artists become entrepreneurs, is teaming up with Austin’s Creative Arts Society for an educational intensive in October – the Austin Art Business Summit. Attendees can exhibit their work during the intensive, and juried awards will be presented. (Wealthy patrons are, of course, welcome to drop by.)
Awards: Editor’s Choice: Awarded by Austin All Natural. Winner’s art on a 2018 magazine cover, article about the artist. Curator’s Choice: Awarded by Soma Vida. Winner will be included in a future Soma Vida group exhibition. Director’s Choice: Awarded by The Arts Business Institute. Winner featured in a profile article on the ABI website. The Austin Art Business Summit, Oct. 21-22, at Soma Vida. Reception Oct. 20, 7-9pm, keynote address by Michael Abedin. Use coupon code AAN for discounted tuition. AWESMIC
Awesmic City Expo, December 16-17 Sometime around 1490, a couple of years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue, as the rhyme says, Leonardo da Vinci put pen to paper and created a drawing. With the exception of the Mona Lisa, it may be his most recognizable work.
You know it. A man’s figure with two sets of arms and legs, Vitruvian Man is based on the principles of ancient Roman architect Vitruvius. Da Vinci created it as a representation of the human body as a microcosm of the grand design of the Universe – the harmonious intersection of body, mind, and Spirit, with a capital S. Connect the dots just right, and it becomes a star, the quintessential form of humanity in its highest celestial development – man as Earth as the Universe, and rse, e, aawesome w s we cosmic. Awesmic.
Awesmicity. Once upon a time, Austin was the capital of Awesomeness. Now, even its once-deserved reputation as a live music paradise has mutated into a production line of corporatized festivals. (Don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, as the song says.) Visual artists have kept some of Austin’s quirky, independent spirit alive, and so have practitioners of the healing and metaphysical arts. Like painters and poets, they work in their own corner of the cosmos, and from time to time gather for their own festivals. The Awesmic City Expo, in its fourth year, started as a blend of performances, music, education, multi-cultural pursuits, and natural health, all dedicated to the goal of recreating a harmonious, peaceful planet. After a holistic and metaphysical section grew (and drew the most interest), director and founder Anyah Dishon decided to shift Awesmic 2017 entirely to exhibitors, speakers, and classes of the holistic and spiritual persuasion. Her logic is simple. “We can’t dump any more of our problems into Mother Earth for her to transform. We’re past the embryo stage of soul growth, past being toddlers. There’s so much creative and loving assistance right now to help us continue on this human sojourn to become cosmic humans – and join the cosmic crew.” If you have a holistic or spiritual practice, product, or business and would like to be a member of the Awesmic 2017 crew, early discounted registration is open for exhibitor booths, speaker slots, and classes. December 16-17, Palmer Events Center, just down the hall from Austin’s most popular Christmas bazaar. Info, registration: (888) 509-8872, www.AwesmicCityExpo.com

THE GUARDIAN CRYSTALS by Folade Speaks With energies and ascension symptoms escalating at quantum speed, everyone’s growing increasingly empathic, feeling sensitive to things they might have been oblivious to just a year ago. Half a dozen hurricanes, earthquakes, seven planets in Mercury Retrograde simultaneously, and two eclipses – emotional Water and erratic Air energies are looming in the atmosphere. It’s essential at times like these to activate self-care and guarding techniques. After salt baths, grounding exercises, smudging, staying in the house with all the deadbolts locked, and ignoring your phone calls, here are some crystals that might help release anxiety and repel aggressive energy. May the Force be with you! (And don’t forget to sew these crystals in your Halloween costume.)
Protection Warriors. Black Tourmaline. Perhaps the most popular crystal for protection, tourmaline even helps block hazardous energy from your electronics, so curbing a little attitude problem when people get out of line is a cakewalk. Wear tourmaline on the left – the feminine, emotional, and spiritual side. The left is the energetic front door, and tourmaline has a silent way of communicating Good Vibes Only! Tourmaline in Quartz. Anchored in Quartz, its metaphysical properties are boosted by the nature of the quartz. This matrix is visually striking, eye-catching, and appears to mimic runes or script. Tourmaline in Quartz is mostly found in natural, unpolished form. Blue Kyanite. A repellant to energy not of the purest vibration – it won’t even soak up negative energy. Like Scocelite, think of Kyanite as protective nurturer to the wearer, and a facilitator for group cooperation. Selenite. Let’s just call Selenite the lightsaber of protection crystals. This is another crystal that doesn’t need cleansing. It actually clears other crystals – place them on top of selenite for a few hours and they’ll have a new charge. In wand form, many practitioners and energy workers utilize selenite like a magic stick, combing the energy field. Basically, it’s a magic wand. Quartz Crystal at the Spiritual Plexus. The Spiritual Plexus is your physical body’s protection space, the dip just

between the Anahata (Heart) Chakra and Manipura (Solar Plexus) Chakra that repels any harmful energy, clears it, and sends it to Source energy. Wrap a single tourminated quartz, and suspend it to a chain or string – the point of the quartz should be directed toward the ground.
Grief and Sadness Warriors. Apache Tears. Like Lepidolite, Apache Tears soothe grief, said to relieve the body of emotions just as tears do – a cleansing force, allowing you to shed and let go of loss and pain. Since Apache Tears are a form of obsidian, they’re ideal for grounding. Amazonite. This visually soothing crystal is the color you see when you gaze into the depths of the ocean, a cross between sage and cerulean. An incredible palm stone for the office, sofa, car, or even falling asleep. If you have a history of mind chatter or negative self-talk, Amazonite will give you glorious feels in no time. (Children love it.) A good one to have when you need to put a sweet spin on your words. Carnelian. Mostly orange and vibrant, Carnelian supports the Svadhisthana (Sacral) Chakra, governing emotions and creativity. If you need something to uplift your day or have a trying schedule before you, carrying a Carnelian as close to the skin as possible will raise the vibration of your emotions. It’s a crystal full of cheer, often a go-to to boost yourself out of depression.
Remember, it’s important to cleanse your tools. Think of crystals as empaths who do really heavy energy work. At day’s end, it’s important they come home to a shower. Hold them under cold running water, place them in a water bath of sea salt or Himalayan salt, or if you have a yard where you can bury them, return them to their origin every now and then. Crystals are the bones of Momma Earth – make sure you’re treating them with respect and care. 4.A52? .A A52 @=?6;4@ Sacred Springs Powwow, October 14-15 by Michael b Mi h l Abedin Ab di Texas, like everywhere else in the U.S., has always been a melting pot of civilizations and races. Great Native American cultures populated the entire state, and South Texas was home to the Comanche, Tonkawa, and Karankawa tribes, among others. There are medicine places here – Enchanted Rock, Barton Springs, the grove of ancient oaks that once surrounded Treaty Oak – that once made it a place of intertribal gatherings and councils.
The medicine is still here, for those who can see it. And the tribes still gather. Austin is home to the largest one-day powwow in the world, the Austin Powwow, held on the first Saturday in November. Just south of Austin, what has now become a two-day powwow for the first time will be held in October at a place of powerful medicine – the Sacred Springs of San Marcos. The Sacred Springs Powwow, October 14-15, will feature traditional Plains dance competition, and some new twists. New Zealand-style native drums will play, and Aztec dancers will vie for honors. Dr. Mario Garza of the Indigenous Culture Institute, powwow sponsors, points out no other powwow features Aztec dance awards, and this new showcase will present dancers from six major Texas dance companies. Aztec danzantes (dancers) are known for phenomenal regalia and huge feathered headpieces, the strong, fast-paced beat of a drum called a huehuetl, and for the stamina it takes to complete an entire dance.
14
Maria Rocha, executive director of the Institute, explains another first. “The Te Tini a Māui is a Māori cultural dance group based in Vancouver, Canada. They dance the Haka, a strong stomp-dance with fierce facial expressions and dramatic poses, like their indigenous ancestors from New Zealand.” (The Māori dance Saturday, at 1pm and 6pm.)
A culture is known by what it eats, as well as how it dances. Rocha says the Indian Market is adding several new Native American food booths. “People don’t know that indigenous people invented barbeque, and they domesticated wild turkeys, cultivated foods that are now seventy-five percent of the food consumed worldwide, and created corn through natural genetic engineering.” Tamales, she explains, were developed by Native people to carry meat on long journeys, wrapped in a protective shield of corn masa to prevent spoilage. The Native Culture tent, a powwow addition two years ago, has storytellers, flute
players, dance demonstrations, and lectures on indigenous topics like the White Shaman panel and the history of the Coahuiltecan culture, hunter-gatherer bands who were ancestors of Native Americans living in the San Marcos area as far back as 13,000 years ago. The Coahuiltecans extended their reach far into northern Mexico, eventually intermarrying into the Spanish and Mexican population on both sides of the Rio Grande, long before talk of immigrants and walls. It’s only natural a powwow held where they once lived would be a blend of cultures. It’s said much of Native culture was spread by honored storytellers and healers, with no single tribal affiliation – the Twisted Hair People. Travelling from tribe to tribe throughout the Americas, they carried powerful medicine in the form of news, history, and gifts – and maybe a tamale or two. Who knows? Maybe a couple of them popped up in Tenochtitlan and New Zealand, to summon the Aztec and the Maori to the Sacred Springs. Sacred Springs Powwow, October 14-15. Sat. 10am-9pm, and Sun. 11am-5pm. Meadows Center, 201 San Marcos Springs Dr., 78666. YOUR BODY’S RECORDS Where are you storing your past?
by Sherry Williams
Your body is a record of your past. In most unpleasant or traumatic experiences, breathing is mildly or severely limited in an attempt to minimize pain, whether it’s emotional, mental or physical. If a sharp intake of breath occurs from shock and the experience is not dealt with in a supportive, integrative manner, the diaphragm can spasm or freeze, causing breathing to be mildly – or extremely – inhibited. The original experience can be anything from a traumatic conception, difficult birthing, or a toxic environment – whether it’s one that’s aggressive, violent, or emotionally unavailable or neglectful. It can also be impact trauma from being struck or attacked, injuries from a car wreck or fall, even surgery. The experiencing of excessive or long-term restricted breathing patterns (suppressions) will eventually manifest as negative emotional and energetic dysfunctions within various systems of your mind-body. This in turn can cause chronic pain, illnesses, shock patterns of anxiety, and attachment disorders – avoidance, ambivalence, or disorganization. What we’re looking for instead of those disorders are secure attachments, ones in which we can develop and maintain healthy relationships.
Hearing your body. For the integration or transformation of stuck energy patterns to occur, it’s important for the body to be heard – invited and allowed to express sensations or symptoms in a non-judged container. Allowing that expression to be viewed as normal – a natural defense mechanism that just got stuck, and may no longer be valid – gives the body permission to transform or discharge excess, stuck energy and erase old tapes that may have shown up as chronic pain, illness, anxiety, depression, insomnia, anger, fear, phobias, or social and relational issues. The body’s innate intelligence knows far better than the brain (which usually runs the show) how it would like to transform the stuck energy and pain it’s stored, and can do so in a gentle, profound way. Most importantly, it can do that without having to go back through the original trauma. There are many effective tools, including Somatic Experiencing, craniosacral therapy, and intuitive body work, that have the potential to help the body release stuck energy – and transform it into useful, positive energy for happy, painfree, hopeful, and healthy daily living. THE PLAYGROUND OF LIFE Unity Church of the Hills, Oct. 8- Nov. 12 How do we dissolve the divisiveness that seems to be running rampant in our society these days? Unity Church of the Hills (UCOH), a community committed to loving acceptance, believes it begins with understanding. By understanding how people think and their underlying motivations, we can be more gracious and accepting of others’ perspectives. Insight is a catalyst for understanding, compassion, and loving kindness.
Loving kindness begins with an intention. Understanding, however, begins with knowledge. To that end, UCOH is offering a five-week series, The Playground of Life, that will attempt to address such questions as How does life evolve, grow and change? What value systems and attractor fields establish our worldviews? The series is being offered in the regular 9:25 and 11:25am Sunday services starting October 8. The framework for this discussion will be The Map of Consciousness, formalized by Dr. David Hawkins. With the Map of Consciousness, Dr. David Hawkins, an internationally renowned psychiatrist, consciousness researcher, spiritual lecturer, and mystic, provided a profile of the entire human condition and a ladder for spiritual evolution. The map illustrates the predominant life-view, Godview and emotion for 17 different levels of consciousness. “It’s helpful to look at the levels of consciousness described by Dr. Hawkins as zip codes,” says Rev. Brian Grandon, one of the Co-Ministers at UCOH. “Using the analogy of zip codes, we can disarm the ego by avoiding labeling one level as ‘better’ than another. The zip code analogy also helps us make a distinction between a level we may visit from time to time, such as anger or fear, and the predominant field of consciousness where we reside.” An understanding of the Map of Consciousness not only equips us for our own spiritual journey, it opens the door for deeper compassion. Each level is important and evolutionary. Unity Church of the Hills is a vibrant, authentically loving spiritual community offering a positive path for spiritual living, led by Co-Ministers Revs. Brian and Kristen Grandon. UCOH offers three Sunday Services at 8:00am, 9:25am, and 11:25am, and a variety of other classes and activities, open to all. 9905 Anderson Mill Rd. 78750 (512) 335-4449. www.UnityHills.org

THE DESERVING AND THE ENTITLED
by Christina Allen Entitlement is a self-imposed claim on recognition, a flag in the ground stating, I deserve special treatment. Perhaps we’re smarter than everyone else, maybe more spiritually awakened. Maybe even our spiritual teachings say we’re more entitled. You may believe your social status, gender, or race, sets you apart. Your choices on what you eat, or do not eat, may give you that notch above the rest. Perhaps it’s the kind of car you drive. You may even think you’ve earned differential treatment because you’ve worked so very hard to get it.
One way people feel entitled is through wounding. They have suffered more than another, so they deserve a break. They deserve retribution. This kind of entitlement is insidious – it floats beneath our conscious thought, motivating behavior and clouding our judgment. It becomes a chip on the shoulder, justifying bad behavior, because the world owes us something for all the pain we’ve endured. We deserve compensation. Many kinds of wounds drive entitlement. Some are personal. We were abused, or maybe abandoned or rejected by our biological families. Some wounding is cultural. Atrocities have happened within the evolution of many of our towns, cities, states and nations, often in the name of a religion, race, or even gender. Sometimes it’s both. However these woundings happen, at whatever level, they leave huge chasms running deep through our hearts, separating us from our perceived abusers, indefinitely. Most of us, when wounded, retreat from the sources of our wounding and vilify them. It’s natural. We may even sow seeds of hate around them. (This will never happen to me, or to my children, or my children’s children, ever, ever again!) It’s easy to point our fingers at the entitled from across the fence and be outraged by their assumptions of superiority, or their need for retribution – but we all have to look at just how this divisiveness lives within us. We all hold blueprints for humanity living within us. By putting ourselves up above the fray we stand out, and are ensuring our survival.
18
The more we dig in with arrogance or self-protection, however, the more self-righteous we become, and the more animosity we generate.
This is not to say that we shouldn’t stand up for our equality. That’s a given – but let’s take a look at this word deserve, and see if it really serves us collectively. It implies a claim, one that justifies a reward. I am this, so I deserve that. It is based on individual beliefs and judgments about our personal worth, not inherent truths. No race, religion, birth order, nor gender is any more valuable than another. To imbue one with more value than others is misguided. We are all here to compliment each other, and create a complex whole. How do we overcome our differences and sit together at the table? So many atrocities have occurred, and so many more in the name of retribution. What will it take to accept people who are different as equals? What will it take for each of us to break down our walls and forgive each other, to move on? It starts on a personal level.
When we change it within, we start the process for the whole. Take stock. Look at how your beliefs support divisiveness. What did you learn to identify with at home, in school, in church? When the fires, winds, earthquakes and waters ravage your lands and strip you naked, who are you then? No one is keeping score here except our egos. We don’t deserve anything – we just are. We can choose to love one another, but we cannot demand to be honored. We earn that by our actions. As Lao Tzu says, “Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity.” Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). Kriya Yoga is a simple, psychophysiological method by which the human blood is decarbonized and recharged with oxygen. The atoms of this extra oxygen are transmuted into life current to rejuvenate the brain and spinal centers. By stopping the accumulation of venous blood, the yogi is able to lessen or prevent the decay of tissues. The advanced yogi transmutes his cells into energy. Elijah, Jesus, Kabir and other prophets were past masters in the use of Kriya or a similar technique, by which they caused their bodies to dematerialize at will. Kriya is an ancient science. Lahiri Mahasaya received it from his great guru, Babaji, who rediscovered and clarified the technique after it had been lost in the Dark Ages. Babaji renamed it simply, Kriya Yoga.

Kriya Yoga is an ancient scientific meditation technique brought to the West in 1920 by legendary yogi Paramahansa Yogananda. Many find their way to Kriya reading Yogananda’s famous book, Autobiography of a Yogi. His organization, The Self Realization Fellowship, continues to disseminate his teachings, offering students Kriya initiation. Shri Hariharananda Giri, a realized master and disciple of Shri Yukteshwar – as well as a friend and student of Yogananda – started Kriya Yoga International to offer Kriya Yoga initiation to more people worldwide. Now led by Shri Paramahamsa Prajnanananda, the organization offers initiations all over the world, with a mission of supporting spiritual growth and service to humanity.
Initiation. Kriya Yoga is not affiliated with any religious tradition, seeking instead to reveal the inherent unity in all religions, allowing initiates to commune with the Divinity within. In order to receive the technique of Kriya Yoga, one must be initiated by an authorized yogacharya. The initiation ceremony serves to purify the energy field of the recipient, to infuse the recipient with the triple divine qualities of light, sound, and vibration, and serves as an energetic offering to the lineage of Kriya Yoga masters. Once the technique has been transmitted, it’s the responsibility of the student to practice diligently, properly, and with devotion. The Austin Kriya Yoga Center will host a talk open to all Fri. Oct. 13 at 7:30pm, and Kriya initiations Oct. 14-15, with Yogacharya Durga Chunduri and Brahmachari Tapananda. PAST EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR ANCESTORS
How they affect you today CZ +PIO /FXUPO Have you ever wondered how past experiences from your ancestors affect you? Remember your first car? Mine was a hand-me-down that had been in the family for quite a while. She wasn’t pretty and had some issues, but she usually got me where I needed to go. Like my first car, the physical body I was born into came from my family, just like yours. How does this most important of all hand-me-downs work for you? Does it have some issues?
Healing past experiences to move forward. It’s known in science we carry stress and trauma from the past. It may be from this life or from our family, going back many generations. We don’t carry all experiences from our lineage, but it doesn’t take much to throw the system off. If you want to have the best life, it may serve you to do some repairs on your vehicle. Pay attention to where you actually are. If your car isn’t running well, it may be best to pull over and see what the issue is – to look under the hood. If the truth sets you free, you need to see what that truth is.
History repeats itself. The actors in our play may change, but the frequency feels the same. So, let’s rewrite the story. Let’s clear the charge to past experiences so they don’t have power over us. Forgiveness is the key to keeping this process as simple as possible. True forgiveness means to let go, offer up. This isn’t about reliving old hurts. It’s about accessing the higher power of your understanding with humility and gratitude, about asking the Creator for help in letting go of what doesn’t serve you. When you clear old burdens, stress, karma, and negative imprints that aren’t serving you, you start to notice more peace, more free will. It doesn’t matter what’s come before, as long as it doesn’t have a charge. When you see what’s behind the scenes at a haunted house on Halloween, it’s not scary anymore. That’s true in life. Pull back the curtain, see what’s there. Then you can deal with it, and move on to the life you were meant to live. John Newton will be in Austin Oct. 26-29. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, Is it in my best interest for my boyfriend and I to live together in the near future? Should I collect social security and retire in January or continue working and not collect until I’m sixty-five? If my boyfriend doesn’t move in I’ll need to work, even if I retired on social security in January. My unemployment runs out in January so I have to do something. I have an interview for a possible part-time job ten minutes from my home at a CPA/bookkeeper office. Nancy, 61, Temple, TX Dear Nancy, As far as your boyfriend and you living together, we think the sooner the better. You should work when you are able to and collect the most social security that’s possible. Keep looking for jobs, for they will pay off in the future. One day you will build a home, settle down and finally love your life. Your highest teacher is Ashtar, and Gabriel is your angel.
Dear Ashtara, Should I keep chasing the man I believe to be the man of my dreams? Or are there better opportunities out there for me? Samantha, 19, San Antonio, TX Dear Samantha, It seems to us that the “man of your dreams” could be the real McCoy. However, you will not find yourself marrying that particular one. Consider your education and then when you are twenty-four, you will probably find someone suitable for you. You were born to be an artist, lawyer, architect or engineer. Architect is our favorite for you. Your highest teacher is Michael. Your angel is Uriel.
Dear Ashtara, When I was born, I was left in a midwife’s house. My biological parents are unknown to me. I married young and had three
26
children, it was tough because of my husband. We were not close with his family. I used to hear messages from light beings and guidance, but I stopped hearing them, I think because I was too young, unprepared, and didn’t know my spiritual path. I am on my spiritual path now, though, and I love to do healings and help others. What can I do to practice? I would appreciate your guidance. Maria, 55, Laredo, TX Dear Maria, Even though things have been difficult in your life you have managed to stay on top of your spiritual path. Many people for the last fifty years have heard messages in their mind. Most of those messages, including yours, were from either a Guide or their High Self. Your messages that stopped were from your High Self. Ascension is swirling the earth. It means that your Master Teacher is giving you ascended messages in your mind. Those messages cannot stop. One day you will hear from Melchizedek, Metatron, Michael, God, Mother Mary, and others. When that takes place, your messages will never end. Please consider owning your own spiritual power. Thus, you will move through your ascension processes and receive your own masterful guidance. The best is yet to come! Your highest teacher is Melchizedek and your angel is God.
