Message from Adam Rocha, Executive Director of SAFILM Welcome to the 22nd Edition of the SAFILM-San Antonio Film Festival. We have such a great program of films, panels, after-parties and more to share with you this year!

For the first time ever, together with our generous sponsor the Pearl, we will present the SAFILM-San Antonio Children’s Film Festival at the Studio in the Full Goods building at the historic Pearl Brewery. The wonderful films and scheduling for our San Antonio Children’s Film Festival were programmed in association with the TIFF Kids International Film Festival and will be presented Wednesday through Saturday in the mornings.

Another first this year is our inaugural SCREENWRITING CONTEST! We worked with talented screenwriter David J. Healey (Leaves of the Tree), who coordinated, read and helped judge the entries. The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Brunch at O’liva.

The San Antonio Film Festival started 22 years ago when I realized we didn’t have a way for filmmakers to share their art in San Antonio. It has grown tremendously – and is even recognized as an important festival on the circuit by the press and many filmmakers.

But that never would have happened without the help of so many passionate and generous people. The tragedy did not stop at the loss of lives. There were also the delay injuries: lost jobs, fear, public ridicule and utter lack of concern by the general public, government and religious leaders. The fire permanently altered lives and was the root of many lifelong struggles.

He did not return to the USA but traveled straight back from Japan to France, where he died shortly after, in 1915, quickly falling into oblivion, as the world was engulfed in World War I. At a time when gender inequality in Hollywood continued to make headlines, Marcia achieved success as a producer and as the first woman to serve as vice-president of production at a major Hollywood studio, United Artists. DONE. NEXT! Through interviews, stock footage, and Marcia’s own narrative, this “untold Hollywood story” unfolds, following Marcia’s career from lone female literary agent at The Ziegler Agency where she represented writers like William Goldman (BUTCH CASSIDY and The SUNDANCE KID), Lorenzo Semple (THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, PARALLAX VIEW) and Robert Towne (CHINATOWN), to United Artists where she became the first female vice-president in charge of production. At UA, Marcia championed films that have become American classics, including: ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, ROCKY, CARRIE, COMING HOME, APOCALYPSE NOW, THE BLACK STALLION. Unceremoniously dismissed, she moved on to a career as an independent producer where she continued to fight for films that were difficult to make. She took on THE BIG CHILL, a film that had been turned down by seventeen companies and fought to get it financed. Larry Kasdan, the writer/director credits Marcia for getting his picture made. We will honor Marcia Nasatir with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Awards Brunch at noon on Sunday, July 31.
