Th ings to do… Olney Amputee Dove Hunt
Show-N-Shine County Line Car Show & Cruise
SEPTEMBER – It began as the One Armed Dove Hunt, which was hailed as "the Most Unusual Event in Texas," and now the Olney Amputee Dove Hunt tries to live up to that title as well. While there are competitions at the OADH, which is held the Friday and Saturday after Labor Day, the main purpose of the event is to act as a support group for upper-extremity amputees. Events include a golf tournament, meals, a trap shoot , an auction, a horseshoe tournament, cow chip tossing and a live dove hunt. Winners in above- and below-the-elbow categories win shotguns based on number of birds brought back from the field.
SEPTEMBER The Olney Chamber of Commerce hosts the ShowN-Shine County Line Car show & Cruise. This year's event will be held Saturday, September 10, downtown at the Gazebo and Grand Street. The event draws owners of classic and newer-model cars, trucks and tractors to Olney to display their vehicles for chances to win trophies and prizes. After the show, the vehicles are invited to participate in a cruise down Main Street. Residents attend the show to see the vehicles and then line the streets to watch the cruise.
March for Jesus National Night Out
OCTOBER Every October, residents of all different faiths from Olney and throughout the state come together for the March for Jesus. For more than 10 years the march down Main Street has allowed everyone a chance to profess their faith in a public, joyful way. After the parade, everyone is invited to a special meal and worship opportunity at the Olney Civic Center for the remainder of the afternoon.
OCTOBER The Olney Police Department and Olney Chamber of Commerce join forces each fall to host the National Night Out. This year it will be held Tuesday, October 4. The event draws individuals and groups related to health, safety and law enforcement to the Olney Family Clinic parking lot to inform citizens about the ways they all help the community. Regular attendees include Olney EMS, the Olney Volunteer Fire Department, OPD, Red Cross, Fort Belknap Electric Co-op and more.
Christmas on Main DECEMBER The holiday season in Olney kicks off with Christmas on Main. Residents come downtown to shop at vendor booths, enjoy s'mores, participate in a gingerbread house contest and go on sleigh rides. Santa Claus was also available for visits with children under the pavilion next to the ice cream shop, where hot cocoa was served. A Christmas event is held downtown each year at the start of December to help usher in the holidays.
Halloween Parade OCTOBER Adults and children alike enjoy the annual Halloween Parade, which is sponsored on Halloween by the Olney Chamber of Commerce. A huge crowd of participants regularly take part. The 2014 event featured, for the first time ever, an accompanying Trunk or Treat opportunity.
Relay for Life
Community Easter Egg Hunt APRIL One of the most popular spring events in Olney is the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which is sponsored by the Olney Chamber of Commerce. Boys and girls from age 1 through fifth grade participate in the event. Hundreds of plastic and candy eggs are scattered for participants to find and enjoy, and the Easter Bunny also also makes a visit to the event each year.
APRIL Relay for Life is a big event held at the end of April each year in Olney. Teams of residents take part in the event, which is geared toward helping raise money for the American Cancer Society. Olney has been hit hard by cancer, so a huge number of pariticpants regularly turn out for the event. In addition to cancer survivors, the Relay for Life honors caregivers and those lost to the disease.
Lake Cooper
Hunting & Fishing
Lake Cooper, located northwest of Olney in Archer County, is the water source for the city of Olney and also serves as a great fishing, camping and hiking area. When filled, Lake Olney feeds into Lake Cooper and also provides plenty of opportunity for fishing and camping.
Anglers enjoy fishing at Lake Cooper for bass, crappie, perch, catfish and other fish species. In addition to the many outdoor activities possible at Lake Cooper, the entire area surrounding Olney is known for excellent dove, deer and quail hunting. Call the Chamber of Commerce at (940) 564-5445 for information on hunting leases and outdoor opportunities. -4-

Olney's History
Some say Olney was named after President Grover Cleveland's secretary of state, Richard Olney. Others claim the name came after a resident read a news article about the activities of Senator Roger Q. Mills in Olney, Ill.. The area that is now Olney was first settled around 1880 by Boone McCarty, L. Pankonon and the Neeley brothers. It was used as a central location for local ranchers holding their annual round-up. The land where the original town was located was donated in 1889 by John W. Groves. Olney was incorporated as a city in 1909. The first store was built by J.M. Brisco, and when G.W. Hutch-
ings agreed to carry the mail, a local post office was established. The first school was established in 1891. The settlers who came to the area found the land to be good for growing wheat and cotton. Rail service with the Wichita Falls and Southern Railway began in 1910, and the city was moved a mile north of its original site to allow for better access to the line. Today, the area where the tracks once were is Main Street, or Highway 114. Oil was first discovered in and around Olney in 1923, and the community became a leading oil town with the discovery of the Swastika Pool in 1924. Olney was home to three refineries and had a population of 5,000 before 1930. Today Olney is still active in agricultural activities, including production of wheat, cattle, cotton, oats, sheep and hogs, as well as a site for petroleum collection. Manufacturing industries such as aluminum products and agricultural airplanes also call Olney their home. (Information courtesy The Handbook of Texas Online)

Olney Volunteer Fi re Department The Olney Volunteer Fire Department has served Olney for more than 100 years. The OVFD is manned by a large number of volunteers who give their time and energy without pay to help citizens of Olney and surrounding areas deal with emergency situations. Each of the city’s volunteer firemen takes time away from work, family and personal responsibilities to train regularly and to respond to structure, car, grass fires and other emergencies. They provide traffic control at emergency incidents and are responsible for bringing the “Jaws of Life” rescue truck to vehicle
accidents throughout the northwest portion of Young County. Many of the Olney volunteer firemen also serve as weather spotters whenever severe storms arise, and also help other emergency response depar tments throughout the county when they are called. A majority of the volunteers also do community service work, including participation in city and Chamber of Commerce-sponsored events and activities. The biggest effort of the year, however, is the annual Toys for Tots drive the department holds each holiday season.

Olney Industrial Development Corp . The Olney Industrial Development Corporation (OIDC) is the local entity that works to enhance the economic development of the city. It is responsible for helping bring businesses to Olney, in turn creating jobs and encouraging economic growth in the community. The OIDC is led by an executive director and an appointed board made up of local business and community leaders. Together, the director and board members work to make companies that could potentially call Olney home aware of the benefits of opening up shop in the area. In the past, the OIDC has helped bring a number of industries to Olney. It helped secure funding and build the warehouse at 100 Anderson Place which formerly housed Cherrydale Farms and Joe Corbi's fundrais-
ing ventures. In January 2015 it was announced that Tower Fab, a division of Tower Extrusions, would move into the facility. The OIDC has also previously purchased and remodeled several downtown stores and the old Hamilton Hotel to help market them to potential business owners. The office of the Olney Industrial Development Corporation is located at the same address as the Olney Chamber of Commerce.

Olney ISD Administration Olney Independent School District is made up of three schools located on one large campus located in the southern portion of Olney. The office of Dr. Greg Roach, superintendent, handles all of the inner workings of the Olney ISD. The district ranks as a 2A school and competes in most sports and in Academic UIL events with campuses throughout the area. Olney ISD is technologically advanced for a small district. Each campus has a computer lab and website that lets teachers post information and lesson plans for parents to see. There is also a "Parent Portal" that allows parents to check student grades easily. OISD will soon be home to
a state-of-the-art junior high school. The school is currently under a massive remodel, and will be finished by July 2016. Improvements to the school will include a new science lab, computer labs, and advanced security initiatives designed to
keep faculty, staff, and students safe. Teachers and students at Olney ISD have access to a district-run daycare center, which offers child care for infants and children up to school age.

This facility on Springcreek Road houses the Head Start program, which is open to 3and 4-year-old boys and girls, including those with disabilities, and enrollment is available to families all year long. Head Start in Olney, like pro-
grams throughout the state, is a school readiness program that is geared toward teaching very young children some of the basic skills needed to excel in the public school system once they are older. Children meet in two separate classrooms. One class meets from 8 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday, and a second class meets five days a week

tion online, Head Start primarily serves children of families whose income is at or below the poverty level established by the U.S. government. However, families of all income levels are encouraged to apply each year on behalf of their young children who might benefit from inclusion in the Head Start program. To apply, parents or guardians must bring each child’s birth certificate, shot record, Social Security number, proof of family income and any information on benefits received to the Olney Child Development Center for a review of qualifications. As a general rule, children in foster care, those who are homeless or are from families receiving TANF benefits are categorically eligible for services. More information can be found during the application process. A special enrollment fair is also held during the spring each year. Dates and times for the enrollment fair will be announced by the Olney Child Development Center as soon as they are scheduled.
