A Letter to Our Readers Ah, April. Come she will, says Paul Simon. She’s the cruelest month, said T.S. Eliot, who obviously never spent any time in downtown Austin in March, when the festival season commences and SX Sou’westers descend like the first robins of spring, like swallows returning to Capistrano, like grackles returning to the same tree limb at dusk to poop on your car and screech like, well – grackles.
Ah, Austin. There are those among you who feel no obligation to keep you weird. We helped make you that way, and we miss you. Your heart may soon be gone – and when the heart goes, it’s all over but the shoutin’. But what the hey, it’s the A-month, and a wet spring made everything green and juicy for Earth Day, even if it didn’t fill up the lake. Get a little April Foolish – dance like an Alligator in Argyle socks, banging away on an Acorn like Matthew McConaughey with a pair of bongos, while an Agouti balances an Anchor, and an Albatross looks on. That’s an A-plus, at the least. – Michael Abedin

Complete self-help books in a three-minute song
by Dr. Joe Vitale
I
f you ever felt “I can’t get what I want,” you might thank the Rolling Stones. Their music, and much popular music, innocently but effectively programs listeners for lack and limitation. Their song You Can’t Always Get What You Want started installing that limiting belief in listeners in 1969. Few think of music as an agent for programming, though. And few would look at that song as a type of brainwashing. Yet music can slow down your progress with the Law of Attraction, and even prevent attracting what you want. It all happens unconsciously, of course. But that’s how the Law of Attraction works – you attract a match to your unconscious beliefs, not necessarily to your conscious ones. While I like the Rolling Stones, too, I wanted to do something about music that limits. So I studied songwriting, gathered experienced musicians, and recorded music that does the opposite – it joyfully rewires you to attract magic and miracles.
For example… The song Feel It Real on my brand new album, One More Day: Life Lessons in Hypnotic Song, advises you to
6
attract what you want by feeling it real. To add impact, I had Grammy-nominated singer Ruthie Foster add her soaring vocals to my lyrics. Now you have a song that sounds great, feels great, and also programs you for a better life. The song The Hook is a song I wrote to remind you not to take any “hooks” from other people, meaning don’t let them push your emotional buttons or engage you in a negative way. The song’s rocking mantra, “Don’t take the hook,” becomes an awareness technique so other people don’t bring your vibration down. As long as you stay aware of hooks in life, you can stay peaceful and focus on attracting what you desire. And the title track song is a barnstorming rocker, made with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Joe Vitale. (Yes, he has the same name as me.) It motivates you to “Seize the day!” It says you have “one more day,” so you better take action and go for your dreams right now. Today! Then there’s a jazzy track called Shock Yourself, which is about getting out of your comfort zone. Too many of us get the same results every day because we do the same things and think the same things every day. The formula needs shaking up. The song urges you to “Jump and skip, chase away the blues…You are here to laugh and sing…You are here to live, not rust.” Again, the blend of words and music, with bass guitar by Glenn Fukunaga, flute by the other Joe Vitale, and guitar by producer Daniel Barrett, come together to make a song that’s hypnotic.
Music works on your body and mind in mysterious and wonderful ways. The melody can put you in a trance. I know from my work in hypnosis that when you’re in even a light trance, you can accept beliefs. The words in a song can get installed in your mind. They are affirmations to music. You can become a new person in minutes with the right song. You could also become an unhappy person in minutes with the wrong song. Every song on the new album is like a condensed self-help book. Instead of taking an entire volume to deliver the message, these songs do it in about three minutes. For example, the song Deep Within points to the power center within you, beyond your mind and emotions. It guides you deep within, to the soul
or Witness behind it all. From there, you can attract whatever you imagine. And the fun song Some Thoughts reveals that some thoughts are helpful and some are not. It advises you to pretend you have a “jukebox in your mind” so you can change your thoughts by reaching for the ones that make you feel good. It’s like changing a tune on the radio or on your audio player. It’s basic Law of Attraction in song. There are also two instrumental tracks on the new album, created with me playing baritone saxophone on one and baritone guitar on the other, that are mind adventures. You can just listen as the music raises your vibration. These are also great tracks to relax to as you visualize what you want to have, do, or be. It’s probably important to realize I became a musician by attracting it. I wasn’t always a musician. I decided to be one when I was about fifty-seven years old. It was on my bucket list. I had all the doubts and fears that anyone else might have attempting something new, but I also knew that “some thoughts” would help me become a musician and some would not. I went with the thoughts that were positive and supportive. And I made sure to “feel it real.” Now, at sixty-one, I have eleven albums out, with One More Day being the fifth singer-songwriter offering. Many of the instrumental albums recorded with Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon are bestsellers. I’ve also been voted #1 singer-songwriter by Reverbnation. And several of my songs have been nominated for the Posi Award, considered the Grammy’s of positive music. I’m sharing this not to brag, but to let you know you, too, can attract your dreams. Anything is possible. I still love the Rolling Stones, but I’m aware that unless you stay alert, their catchy tunes (and many others by other bands, not just the Stones) can help you create a reality you don’t want. If you want to use music to help you use the Law of Attraction in more joyful ways, listen to music that is upbeat, positive, and makes you feel like the super being you really are.

by Lezlie Bowen We’ve all experienced many changes through the last few years, but the biggest change is the one we’ve been experiencing within. More than ever, we’re becoming consciously aware of how thoughts, actions, and words create our world – and the more conscious we become, the more awareness we’ll have of our interconnection to all that exists in our world. As we become more sensitive beings, we begin to feel the living energies that exist in all elements. Trees, rocks, and animals are no exception. By listening, we begin to understand how our actions impact them and everything else, and circle back to impact us. There is truth to old teachings like “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It’s only the complete meaning of their wisdom that’s been forgotten through the ages.
Radio waves, dog whistles, and the frequency of thoughts. The basic element at the core of creation is energy. When you think a thought, you’re sending out a frequency of energy, the same as a radio wave. Radio waves can’t be seen – and yet you can hear them. Thought operates the same way, but on a different frequency level, like dog whistles that you can’t hear but dogs can. Thought frequency is picked up by your brain and processed into a feeling. Thankfully, your brain, like a computer, can be re-programmed to think thoughts that serve your greater happiness – and it’s essentially the same principal for your words. Actions, however, must be in alignment with thoughts and words. If you’re dreaming of paradise and in your actions you’re destroying yourself and the planet, your actions are incongruent with your dream. Most people were never taught how to create the life they hold in their vision. This is the journey we’re being compelled to take. Bringing Heaven to Earth is our mission. Lezlie Bowen is co-producer of Austin PluggedIn, the sustainability festival and concert, bringing together elements of mind, body, spirit, Earth, and sustainable building, with many different modalities available to begin aligning with your inner desires. Free demonstrations, product giveaways, classes by donation, and lots of information, vegan and organic food, and live music. April 11-12, outdoors at The Shops in Arbor Trails, 4301 W. AT DEATH’S DOOR Explore the Extraordinary: Near-Death Experiences as Rites of Passage, San Antonio, Sept. 3-6 A near-death experience (NDE) is a profound psychological event that may occur to a person close to death or, if not near death, in a situation of physical or emotional crisis. Because it includes transcendental and mystical elements, an NDE is a powerful event of consciousness; it is not mental illness – Dr. Bruce Greyson Everyone will face the prospect of death one day, and it’s a wonderful gift to hear from people who’ve already had experiences – one that can change your life. There are millions of individuals whose lives have been affected by this phenomenon, and millions who are experiencers but don’t realize it, experiencing many aftereffects and knowing they’re different, but not knowing why The International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) has support groups for individuals who’ve had, or have an interest in, near-death and similar experiences, providing education for healthcare providers, experiencers, professional caregivers, family, friends, and anyone with a desire to understand this phenomenon better. Even if you don’t see yourself as an experiencer, this information may change your life. It’s particularly important to help the elderly, veterans, parents of child experiencers, and others in dependent or difficult situations. Through IANDS, these experiencers don’t feel isolated and alone.

Is Austin causing my allergies? by Nerissa Oden Did you hear Austin’s newest residents complaining about their horrible bouts with seasonal allergy symptoms this winter? They often claim the Austin area created new allergies for them, or made existing allergies worse. Is Austin really to blame for their moderate to severe seasonal allergies? Are they‌
Allergic to Austin?
Yes and no. Yes, it’s true that allergy symptoms are often more intense or frequent when exposure to the offending allergen has increased. The Austin area does experience high amounts of cedar pollen during the winter months, causing additional stress on your immune system. Many people think they have a viral cold during Austin’s winter months, when they really have allergy symptoms – and vice versa. Locals refer to this condition as cedar fever. Cedar fever season usually occurs through December and January. Relatedly, our immune systems can become overburdened by other factors like viral infections, chemical toxicity, food allergens, and physical or emotional stressors. These factors may also cause seasonal allergy symptoms to be more intense or frequent. Allergies that suddenly appear in adults are called adult onset allergies, and can become a problem at any point in your life. Yet, the majority of people can tolerate pollen very well, even high pollen counts, when no other major stressors are maxing out their immune systems – and hidden food allergens can be major unidentified stressors to your immune system. Acupuncture, Wood, and your Inner Teenager by Matt Dorsey It’s no coincidence that April Fools’ Day comes at the start of spring. According to Oriental Medicine, spring is the season of the Wood element, which represents the indomitable upward expansion of adolescence. It’s the period of whimsy and regrowth following the barren, reflective stillness of winter. Think of the tree root that musters the force to grow through a concrete sidewalk. That’s Wood energy. Yep – spring is that time of year when people may find themselves channeling their inner teenager, suddenly becoming more strong-willed, impassioned, and, shall we say, amorous.
The liver and emotional expression. As the primary organ of the Wood element, the liver is the first system that most acupuncturists will examine when a patient comes in for a mood disorder. On a physical level, it manufactures amino acids, the building blocks of most of your neurotransmitters, and although we still have almost no clue what the mechanism is, there’s a small mountain of research demonstrating that acupuncture can profoundly influence your biochemistry. Energetically speaking, the liver governs emotional processing and smooth flow of Qi throughout the body. When an emotion is repressed, liver Qi is stagnated, and various processes can be impacted – especially menstruation and digestion. Ever spent a week in black and white, feeling like the Zoloft cartoon, finally being restored to your authentic self – but only after you speak your truth and have a good cry? Tears are the most effective liver cleanse there is. It gets harder to stay in rapport with your inner child as you grow older, because its simple, innocent qualities are mostly incongruent with the sophisticated, complex landscape of your adult self-image. We tend to forget that psychic integration isn’t all about harrowing purification and shadow work. It’s also about rediscovering the baby we threw out with the bathwater – and then throwing an impromptu dance party with that baby.
On a psycho-spiritual level, paedomorphism is about harnessing all the greatest qualities of youth: creativity, spontaneity, and – perhaps most importantly – expressing your emotions openly in the healthiest way possible. Could this be one of humanity’s next evolutionary leaps? Whether you’re the Rock of Gibraltar or a tempest in a teapot, you can benefit from honestly asking your inner child what it needs from you. If this makes you feel silly, that’s even CFUUFS &NCSBDF JU ,JET USVTU ZPV NPSF XIFO ZPV SF PO UIFJS level. You trust you more when you’re on your level. Love the teenager within as best you can this spring, and don’t beat yourself up too much if you end up acting a little cray cray, as kids say. In the event you need some assistance, seek out one of Austin’s many fun-loving certified energy magicians. We love to help. Matt Dorsey, MAcOm, Lac, practices Esoteric Acupuncture at Teralux Mind-Body Medicine. (470) 333-8880, www.TeraluxMindBody.com
Moving forward by moving backward. In evolutionary biology, there’s a concept called paedomorphosis that describes when the next generation of a species suddenly begins to retain certain aspects of childhood, well into maturity. For example, young chimps are mostly hairless, but become completely covered in fur when they grow up, whereas adult humans look relatively more like young chimps – a previous evolutionary stage – in terms of hair coverage. Ever notice how some of the more spiritually aware people you know have a certain childlike quality about them, despite their emotional maturity? Listen to the Dalai Lama laugh sometime. Case in point.

The Art of ALETHA ST. ROMAIN Created as the first in a series of illustrations for a never-published book entitled Alphalimericks: The Silly Limerick ABC.
Portrait of Austin musician Sara Hickman, for her CD

orn and raised in New Orleans, one of Aletha St. Romain’s first jobs was painting floats at a Mardi Gras float den. Graduating from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette with an Applied Arts degree, specializing in advertising design, she worked for a short time in Dallas. “That was a big shock to me. Coming from a culture that celebrates eccentricity, I didn’t last long.” She wound up in Austin (of course) in 1989, when it was still eccentric. “I was captivated with the natural beauty and what was, at that time, a very relaxed, friendly place to live.” Working for local ad agencies, her illustrations have appeared in Texas Monthly, Spy magazine, and Business Week, among others, and for companies such as Microsoft, Euro Disney, Coca Cola, and Shiner Beer’s Wild Hare Pale Ale.
Keep your cotton-pickin’ hands off the environment. Today, Aletha teaches basic illustration at ACC, and continues to do freelance work. Her husband, Ted Ducote, grew up on a farm in central Louisiana, sitting on fences in the fields with his brothers and cousins, watching crop dusters fly overhead and spew poisons onto the cotton fields – and on them.
14
Together, they created Saint-Romain Textile, producing aprons, tote bags, and tea towels using only 100% organic Texas-grown cotton fabric, and an environmentally friendly printing process to imprint her artwork on all their products – one that uses water-based ink, generates little waste, and holds up well to repeated washings. A percentage of proceeds go to organizations promoting awareness of the natural world and the protection and preservation of animals. Instead of an artist’s statement, she has a wish. “I’d ask that everyone spend some time outside. Walk your dog, or someone else’s dog. Breathe in the air, take in the beauty that surrounds us all – and be thankful you’re part of it.” See Saint-Romain Textiles at Barton Creek Farmers Market, Saturday, May 2, 9am-2 pm, and at www.saintromaintextile.etsy.com/shop See Aletha St. Romain’s illustrations at www.AlethaArt.com
Corazon at Castle Hill The Heart of Austin
by Michael Abedin Everything dies, baby, that’s a fact, but maybe everything that dies someday will come back. – Bruce Springsteen, Atlantic City Drive west of Lamar on Sixth St., take the first left on Baylor, and you’ll see Treaty Oak, the last of a five-hundred year-old grove called Council Oaks, where Stephen F. Austin signed treaties with the tribes. Sam Houston, first president of the Republic of Texas, is said to have taken repose (and probably a drink or two) under its branches after being booted out as Governor, when he opposed Texas seceding and joining the Confederacy. Geographically, spiritually, historically, it sits at the heart of Austin. Catty-corner from it, at Fifth and Baylor, there’s a woodframe structure with a red neon sign that reads, appropriately, Corazon – Spanish for heart – in a scrolled, Spanish colonial script.
For now, anyway. Corazon at Castle Hill is – for the rest of April, at least – a casual fine-dining restaurant with a traditional Interior Mexican/Southwestern flair, and a microcosm of Austin history. The building was a neighborhood grocery five or six decades ago, Austin’s first health food store in the Seventies, Treaty Oak Café in the Eighties – and, by the early Nineties, home to a fanatically loyal clientele of what could probably be called the birthplace of good, eclectic, affordable fine dining in downtown Austin – Castle Hill. Created by David and Cathe Daley in 1986, Castle Hill started out a few blocks up Lamar, behind Whole Earth Provision Company in the shadow of Austin’s real-live castle on a hill, the post-Civil War Texas Military Institute. It found its groove at Fifth and Baylor, a favorite of wine reps who saw that it got highly allocated cases of amazing wines at amazing prices to go with the amazing food. (Ahh, the ’92 Ridge Zins, the ’94 Cline Mourvedre…) Ceramic lizards from Oaxaca crawled the walls, and on Saturday nights, the wait could be a couple of hours – or more.

Regulars watched for seasonal favorites like coconutcrusted Voodoo Shrimp in mango and habanero (only the brave asked for extra Death Sauce), or Taddeo’s brilliant interpretation of pad thai, so labor-intensive he’d only make it once a year. The wait staff, eclectic and original as the menu, was such a tight-knit group that if you got a job there, everyone asked who your vampire was. It was a functional anarchy – smart, responsible, talented people keeping something valuable and cool chugging along for a diehard fan base. One regular who lived on Baylor came in every Saturday night for years, ten minutes before closing, and hung around talking and drinking wine as everyone decompressed before a Sunday off. The Daleys parted ways, Castle Hill became Corazon, partnerships, menus, and staff changed – and Michael Taddeo became both chef and partner, crafting a rotating seasonal menu based on a foundation of solid winners. The dishes became his own unique works of art that expanded on the original magic, the margaritas became the best in town, and Corazon truly became Corazon at Castle Hill, transcending the sum of its parts.
And it’s closing, sometime around the end of April.
Functional anarchy.
Please, Lord, not another condo – but word has it the business and property have been sold to someone who plans to remodel and reopen in a few months, offering jobs to the current staff. Concept and menu may change, but sounds like there’ll still be a restaurant at Fifth and Baylor, and that’s a good thing. Might wanna head over to Corazon as much as you can in April, though, just in case it morphs into another generic Rainey St. hipster clone. Stop by the original Wiggy’s on the way and pick up a little something, then sit by Treaty Oak in the twilight and drink a toast to Old Austin with Sam Houston.
The menu changed every two weeks, inspired by the Daley’s travels in Mexico and executed by a back-of-thehouse staff that included future co-owner Michael Taddeo,

S
o you’re a sensitive, you pick up on everything in your environment, from peoples’ emotions and the collective consciousness to solar flares – but does this mean you are, inherently, a sponge? Many people who are sensitive to the energetic world fear they’ll absorb other peoples’ emotions and attract negative energies and entities when they’re out in public places. This does not, however, have to be true.
Wouldn’t it be nice if sensitivity came with a manual? Empaths are designed to feel other peoples’ emotions, but not to carry them. If we’re carrying others’ emotions past any point of just noticing them, this is a result of our belief systems and imprints, not our perceptive skills. Absorbing emotions is actually something we chose to do, consciously or unconsciously, as a way to clean up our own emotional environments. By sparing someone else the pain of carrying their own feelings, we can make them more available to us. If our mother is sad, for example, we may learn at an early age that if we absorb her feelings, she’ll be happier and more present, because we absorb her pain. Alternatively, if we’re in a room with a very stressed individual or group of individuals, we may absorb the stress, just to make the room more inhabitable for ourselves. Another way we absorb other peoples’ emotions occurs when we’ve projected our energy fields too far out into space to maintain solid contact with ourselves. We may unconsciously extend our energy fields out to pick up information about our environments. The further we send our field out into the world beyond its normal boundaries, however, the more pervious it becomes.
Why do we expand our fields out so far? Probably because when we were children, we had unpredictable emotional environments that we needed more information about. Expanding our fields out to pick up on Mommy or Daddy’s mood let us know in advance what to expect from them. We might have then absorbed their sadness, grief, or anger as a way of making them more emotionally accessible.
16
Many Sensitives express concern that they’ll pick up negative energies, or even entities, because they’re filled with so much light. In truth, negative energies and entities cannot attach to the high vibration of light – they are, instead, attracted to like energies in their environment. We only pick them up if we have an affinity for them. An affinity is some unresolved aspect of ourselves that draws these dark energies in. They do not just randomly attach to people – they’re attracted to the specific emotional states they love to feed off. We’re velcro to them, until we do the personal work it requires to no longer live in these emotional states continuously. Let’s say, for example, that you have an old unresolved anger issue – an energy that feasts on anger is going to find you a most attractive host. Once it connects in with you through your anger, it will help direct you into as many situations that will anger you as possible.
Some people stop at blaming their negative behavior on an entity. The real problem is the festering anger issues within you that the entity was initially drawn to. Once that’s dismantled, you won’t attract that kind of energy – on the energetic, or in the physical. As a Highly Perceptive Person, or SuperCeptor, you’re not a sponge or victim. You’re a high-powered Maserati, designed for precision. We arrive on this planet highly perceptive, like a giant satellite dish, but we come without a manual. When you learn how to tune your machine and maintain it properly, there’s nothing to fear. Just completely step into your light, gas it – and drive! BODY OF EVIDENCE Finding safe body care products may be trickier than you think by Brooke Drake Fed up with taking medications? Feel like that’s no way to live, and there must be another way? Do some research, read, learn about alternative medicine and holistic, natural living, and learn about the U.S. food system. You’ll realize you need real food, high-quality food, because all the toxic chemicals and “fake” foods we ingest on a daily basis can make you sick. So, too, can the toxic personal care products you put on your body – products you bathe in, hair products, skincare, makeup, body lotions. Your skin is your largest organ, and sixty percent of what you put on it gets absorbed right into your body. (Think how well transdermal patches work to stop smoking, or deliver hormones, then think how many products you put on your face, body, and hair – every day.)
It’s scary. Cancer and disease rates are rising, and at much younger ages – and so are neurological issues. There are many factors causing this, of course, but every little bit you can do to be less toxic will help reduce the load of the toxic burden on your body.
You can overhaul your diet and overhaul your home using all non-toxic cleaning supplies, but you may have problems finding makeup, hair care, and skincare products that follow the same standards. Many people don’t realize what’s allowed in personal care products in the U.S. The European Union has banned over thirteen hundred toxic chemicals from skincare, cosmetics, and personal care products, whereas the U.S. has only banned eleven – and the last time the U.S. banned an ingredient was in 1938! In other words, the U.S. apparently doesn’t really have any regulation on personal care products, and most ingredients have never even been evaluated for safety. Many cosmetics lines are loaded with lead, aluminum, mercury, and other heavy metals, are packaged in BPA containers, contain animal fats and oils, and are tested on animals.
Paying attention. You could try buying only products labeled natural, thinking they’re safe, but you may not realize how wrong that can be. There are no regulations in the U.S. about what really is “natural,” and you wouldn’t think products with that label could contain arsenic, lead, mercury, and other ingredients that are toxic – but that can be the case. There’s also sometimes a gap between the results and performance of high-end, fashionable department store makeup and skincare lines, and the more natural, not-soglamorous lines that often don’t work as well, or don’t have enough active ingredients. The Environmental Working Group has a list of almost 100,000 products – from everyday products by the major commercial brands to the more natural brands – listed on a scale from one to ten on safety and toxicity, with ten being the most toxic. Do your research – you can pick and choose the products you want from various brands, or find one brand that applies strict ingredient selection standards for all its products. Brooke Drake is a Consultant for Beautycounter, a social-mission based business that provides safe personal care products that perform like professional, high-end beauty products, and are free of all 1300 toxic ingredients the EU has banned, all heavy metals, and an additional 200 ingredients linked to cancer, neurological issues, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption. All packaging is BPA-free, and no animal fats or animal testing are used. Contact her at (214) 773-6971, or visit www.Brookehdrake.beautycounter.com

Colloidal Trace Minerals
VANADIUM by Gary Hanna (Part eight of a series) Vanadium was first recognized as an essential trace mineral in 1971. It has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis, helping lower the blood cholesterol. Vanadium helps with the proper regulation of the circulatory system. It is a non-platinum metal and dietary micronutrient. Like most minerals in the wrong form, vanadium is not easily absorbed in the intestinal tract. Having minerals in an absorbable form, such as colloidal vanadium, is crucial. Even after you get it into your system, however, about ninety percent of vanadium ingested is excreted through the kidneys.
What does Vanadium do? Vanadium stimulates blood sugar (glucose) oxidation, and is beneficial for glucose tolerance problems like hypoglycemia, diabetes, and hyperinsulinemia (excess insulin the blood relative to glucose levels, sometimes mistaken for hypoglycemia or diabetes). You may not know that hypoglycemia is a precursor to many other diseases, including diabetes. Many diseases can be stopped before they’re serious, if you know you’re hypoglycemic and deal with it. The body needs vanadium for proper regulation of the circulatory system. When it’s present in the body, vanadium also prevents excessive cholesterol deposits in blood vessels, and build up of cholesterol in the central nervous system can be combated by vanadium as well.
Vanadium Deficiency Symptoms Slow growth Elevated cholesterol Hyperinsulinemia Cardiovascular disease Hypoglycemia Infertility Elevated triglycerides Obesity

A naturopathic approach to integrative and holistic dentistry by Melissa Russ Russ, ND Walking down the hall of the practice on an extremely busy day not long ago, I stop to listen… Dr. Carpenter was talking to a patient who was being preconditioned for surgery. He was encouraging them to eat bone marrow broth soup everyday, and take their probiotic. One of the assistants was making a post-op patient more comfortable by adjusting the pillow under the arm that had an IV in it. The IV was slowly dripping vitamin C into the patient to support healing. I make my way to the front of the office, walking past the shelf that stocks supplements and natural oral hygiene products, stopping briefly to make a note of a few things to order. It seemed like just yesterday Dr. Carpenter asked me to help him develop an integrative department in the dental practice. There was no model, no actual system to follow. We would have to create something new – and that’s what we did.
The result? One of the only biological dentistry and naturopathic teams in the country – a truly progressive, holistic environment where the art and the science of medicine meet, effectively merging traditional naturopathic concepts with high tech dentistry, always keeping in mind that the patient experience is the most important goal of each day. It’s not uncommon for a patient to get their teeth cleaned, pick up a jar of freshly ozonated water, and see me for an update on their nutritional program. As a naturopath, I was taught a very elementary dental exam. Look in the patient’s mouth, see if they have mercury fillings or metal crowns, look for active infection and decay, ask if they have root canals, and then refer them to a holistic dentist – if you can find one in your city or state. I was fortunate to work in Austin, a city that had several dentists to refer to, but I wanted to collaborate with a holistic dentist. Dr. Carpenter had an interest in supporting his patients with nutritional information and educating them about how to prevent disease. This seemed like a great opportunity to create a team that could truly address comprehensive care. I did not fully understand the depth to which toxic dentistry affected a patient’s overall health until I began witnessing amazing recovery. Replacing poisonous metals with biocompatible materials made such a difference for those suffering from undiagnosed symptoms. Bacteria inside one root canal can cause the immune system to spin out of control, and lead to symptoms such as brain fog, chronic fatigue, and unexplained body pain – and removing abscessed or dead teeth properly has the potential to restore the body’s ability to recover from autoimmune dysfunction. A truly holistic dental practice always considers the threedimensional aspect of the individual. Body, mind, and spirit are a crucial component to all treatments, and partnering with patients through effective communication, education, and compassion is the best way to help them attain their highest goals. Melissa Russ, ND, is a clinically trained naturopath in partnership with Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health, supporting a whole-body approach to biological dentistry and overall health. Transcend Dental Health utilizes drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, natural alternatives to antibiotics, and non-surgical treatment of gum disease. (512) 255-3618, www.tdhtx.com

Since it’s about building homes, TreeHouse offers advice on what Siu and Cha, two of the three pig siblings, could have done to make their homes a better match for the Big Bad Wolf. None of the pigs picked a material that’s bad for building homes – it was how it was used.
Siu’s straw house. No one’s surprised when the Wolf blows it down with a single blow, but straw doesn’t make a bad house. Siu just failed to use it to make a sturdy house. Straw homes with thick clay or mud-coated walls have been built for centuries, especially in plains states known for howling winds, blizzards, sub-zero winters, and blistering, hundred-degree summers. Due to thickness and the way straw bales trap air, they’re incredible insulators, with R-values mostly above R-40. (To meet Austin code, new construction only needs R-15 walls.)
Cha’s stick house. The second pig built a house of sticks, making you think of twigs and thin, wispy branches. Wood, though, comes in many sizes. Long before they could carve a tree into 2x4’s, people knew how to build beautiful, durable log homes in any climate. With properly sealed seams, they’re energy efficient and sturdy – something Cha wasn’t thinking about when he built his home from the first sticks he could find.
Bao’s brick house. Of all the pig sibling’s choices, brick is the strongest. It’s also the most energy-intensive to make, using clay, sand, lime, and a lot of heat to harden the blocks. The traditional way to make bricks or earth blocks is forming them and leaving them in the sun. If your site has access to good clay and sand, earth blocks could be a wise choice for the strongest house. The pigs’ curly tale has a lot to teach about wise homebuilding decisions. The first two built homes as fast as they could. It took longer to build that brick house, but it paid off. With a little thought and hard work, any house can stand up to the Big Bad Wolf, regardless of what form he takes. The Three Little Pigs, Saturdays through April 25 at Zach. www.ZachTheatre.org

THE NEW WAY If it doesn’t serve – shed it
by Deborah Antich Shed it? How do you do that? Start small. You know the things you do every day that keep you on the wheel – and if you don’t, take a second to think about it.
Want some examples? How about the person who, when your phone rings, you groan – but pick it up anyway, knowing it will be the same conversation as last time, and the time before that. Not saying don’t pick up. (Okay, actually, I am – but if it’s your mom, you can’t dodge her forever.) Pick up, but keep it short, simple, and to the point. When they start to spin the story, leave the conversation – yes, you can do that – or redirect into something positive. When they call again, rinse and repeat. When you don’t engage, don’t connect at the same level you once did, one of two things will happen. They go with it and the relationship continues – or they don’t, and it doesn’t. Want another? Click on the super depressing story on Facebook, or the politically charged one, so you can read the comments and get all riled up. You know the ones – we’ve all done it. Then, well, you’ve got to share, right? You want to see what your friends think about it, to keep it going.
No, stop that. Stop that right now. Getting stuck in stories, then stirring in other peoples’ stories, gets (and keeps) you stuck in a whirlpool of mediocrity. Unstick. When you let go of a negative exchange, that creates the space for something happier, something better. Do it again, it creates another one. It gets easier, and happens faster. Nature hates a vacuum, and if you’re living to create a space for joy, it’ll find you. Open up a new way, and it can’t help but find you. Let go of the muck and get to the good stuff. You can’t be in both, because one impedes the other. Start where you are – but start now. Up next: Intuitive Intelligence – what is it, and how do you get it? Deborah Antich is a no-nonsense clairvoyant channel, intuitive consultant, and creator of the Traveling Psychic Supper Club. Private readings, business consulting, public speaking, private dinners. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers DearAshtara, I had a lovely session with you two years ago. I wanted to ask you now when my finances will improve and how? And also, my love life – is it in the future? Gladys, 51, Austin, TX
Dear Ashtara, The orthopedic doctor said that my wife Linda’s left shoulder is frozen. She is in a lot of pain. Is there anything you can suggest that might help? Paul, 68, San Antonio, TX
Dear Gladys, It looks like love is in the air whenever you are happy! If lonely sets in, then you attract more lonely. The law of attraction affects all of us. So, be happy and you will find a partner. Happiness is a state of mind – therefore, it’s an easy thing to do with no regrets. As far as your finances, place a $10 or $20 bill on a small altar with a picture of Archangel Michael and see how quickly you come up with ideas. By the way, your highest teacher now is Melchizedek.
Dear Paul, Look on the bright side – perhaps Linda will get an automatic healing from her highest angel, Raphael. She has twisted cartilages, and a nerve bed that has popped up almost to the surface – which is making her shoulder “frozen”. It may take up to twenty-four hours to assist her. Her highest teacher is Gabriel, as well as Jesus.
Dear Ashtara, The building lease for my restaurant is up this June. Should I stay here or sell my restaurant? I’ve been here for five years. Ray, 50, San Marcos, TX
Dear Johnny, Your mission is to become an author with Maitreya. Since you have to make money to survive, you could become an architect. Before you were born, God said to use your artistic ability as an architect. Your teachers are Gabriel, Michael, and Lord Maitreya.
Hello Ray, I am happy to say that when you decide to stay put, several things will happen. First of all, business will pick up considerably when the sun is shining during the summer. It just seems that you will not sell. If you do not sell, you will not be as happy because you do not know what the future could have held. Trust in the UNIVERSAL SUPPLY and your cup will runneth over. There is a song called Something Good is Going to Happen to You and it just might be your turn. We are not talking about a windfall. We are talking about the future right where you are, believe it or not. It looks like Ashtar, Sananda, Gabriel, and others are at your side, and at your beck and call.

AB;6;4 B= Quantum biofeedback, good vibrations, and the Orchestra of You
Stressed?
If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and Vibration. – Nikola Tesla
Out of Balance?
All living cells emit electromagnetic signals vibrating at different frequencies, and healthy cells vibrate within ideal frequencies. Illness, fatigue, mental and emotional stress, the effects of aging – all of these are just misplaced energies operating at the wrong frequencies. Like an orchestra led by a conductor, the human body is controlled and regulated by a quantum energy field. The body’s first signal that something’s unwell is vibrational or electromagnetic, in that field – physical manifestation of symptomology shows up last, not first.
The first law of energy medicine. It’s a simple one – change energy, and you change the manifestation of mass. Energy medicine has the potential to restore the balance of energy and frequency – think of your orchestra of vibrations tuning up for a concert. Unlike a cello out of tune in an orchestra, though, damaging frequencies can be stored in cells, building up unnoticed over time. Computerized quantum biofeedback devices use energy, frequency, and vibration to detect what frequencies may be off-key in your body, and, like a tuning fork, reintroduce vibrations needed to entrain the offending vibration back into harmony and retrain your body’s cells, organs, and functions to more optimal functioning.
Testing, 1-2-3‌ 10,000. Minutes after connecting to your energy field, remotely or through electro-dermal response, quantum computer technology measures over 10,000 things, comparing your body to normal frequencies. It lets your body recommend its own priorities, as well as energetic retraining modalities ranging from Rife frequencies to Bach flower essences, dark field microscopy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), electroacupuncture, allergy desensitization, and brain balancing. The retraining process can incorporate over thirty different methods tailored specifically to you, and the powerful software also has the potential to reduce everyday psychological, emotional, and physical stressors that can interfere with your body’s natural healing abilities. Its goal is simple – unblock energy blockages, and tune up your orchestra. It’s show time, and the conductor’s tapping his baton. The opening number? Good Vibrations, of course.
Exhausted? Want more Energy?
Know you could be Feeling Better?
Computer Body Balancing is the answer Eliminate stress within your physical, mental and emotional bodies. This amazing technology scans for imbalances and delivers therapies to neutralize, de-stress, balance and retrain.
