Fun With Food! Little moments to Big memories! Food was always a big part of my life growing up. My grandmothers’ were always in the kitchen whipping something up for me to eat!....I was a very picky eater as a child. My mother and grandmother used to find creative ways to get me to at least take a bite. That is when “eggs in a nest” became my favorite food! The food was only peas nestled inside fluffy mashed potatoes but my grandmother would tell a great story about how the peas were eggs and the eggs were in a little bird’s nest. I was hooked. Frankly, I still love to eat the two together. My boys were great eaters! As you know, though, boys eat quite a bit! I found myself making every vegetable possible so they would get a sampling of all food varieties. I wanted them to come away with an appreciation of different flavors and tastes. I think introducing the foods at a young age even if it is a bite, will help them with their later eating habits

occasion. She is a good eater, but I want to introduce fun foods to her every once in a while! On a recent visit, I made her a caterpillar pancake. It was a hit (after she stared at it for the longest time)! The spaghetti head was also met with a smile, however, she mainly ate the spaghetti! I am sharing a few pictures of fun food that I think are adorable. True, it takes time. True again, small children are so busy it is hard to fit this in on a regular basis. Once in a while, though, making a little sunshine on the plate is sure to make a wonderful memory! Happy Imagination! My friend introduced me to the octopus hot dog so--after that I would give them an octopus over spaghetti or over a mound of chili dirt! Frozen grapes and frozen bananas on a stick were a great dessert treat. One can cover them with chocolate and candies as an alternative. Another idea I found was popular when they were young was freezing fruit juice. The little popsicle holders are available at local stores. It is fun, economical, and healthy! Tips for keeping your car clean By Kevin Pearson, Pearson Carpet Care There’s nothing worse than buying a new car and realizing a couple of weeks later it is already filthy. Food and drinks get spilled, the dog rides with you, kids are sweaty when getting picked up from ball practice and then bam your car is dirty. By maintaining the appearance of the vehicle inside as well as out, you retain the value of the car, which will help you when it’s time to trade it in. Here’s a few tips on cleaning up your car.

1.

Dilute coffee spills immediately with water and blot with a clean white terry cloth rag. If a stain remains after the spot dries, spray on a glass cleaner. Soak the area with the glass cleaner, allow to sit for five minutes, and blot. Glass cleaner cleans without leaving the soapy residue that most carpet spot removers do, which only attracts more dirt afterward. Glass cleaner is normally effective on even the most difficult stains. However, do not try this on your home carpet. Since most car carpet is olefin and can stand up to most anything it is ok to use it there, but most in home carpet is nylon and it will not work the same. Hairspray will lift out pen ink stains on carpeting or upholstery

undisturbed for an hour before vacuuming up both dirt and unpleasant smells. If your dog rides with you a lot and you have fleas in your car, then put a second application of 20-Mule Team Borax on and leave it over night before vacuuming thoroughly and it will kill the fleas and their eggs. Before your vehicle carpets begin to show excessive wear and tear, vacuum them just as you would at home. This will lift the fibers back upright and counteract the long-term ill effects of the dirt that’s been pounded into it. Since over 70% of soil in carpet is dry soil, vacuuming is the best thing you can do for any carpet to prolong the life.

4.

If carpeting begins to smell, sprinkle on 20-Mule Team Borax generously, then let it sit undisturbed for an hour before vacuuming up both dirt and unpleasant smells.

5.

If you get shocked a lot getting out of your car there are several things you can do. You can wear an anti-static wrist band, rub the upholstery and carpet of your car with a dryer sheet, use an anti-static laundry spray or touch the metal on the door of the car with a key before you get out. However, these are mostly temporary fixes. So if the problem is bad enough you can go to your mechanic and get a grounding strap installed. Also, getting new tires on your car may eliminate you getting shocked when getting out of your car. Child Brain Based Problems Many names – One cause

At the start of the 2015-2016 school term, over 1.5 million children entering school (1 out of every 6 children ages 5-6 years old) will be diagnosed with some type of neurologic disorder that affects their ability to learn and socially interact. Unfortunately, this trend is expected to worsen in the upcoming years. Over the last ten years the number of children in special education classes has increased 47% in the United States. Conditions such as ADD, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, Asperger’s, dyslexia, OCD, oppositional defiance disorder and other learning disabilities

Over the last ten years the number of children in special education classes has increased 47% in the United States are all on the increase. So what is going on or should we ask what is going wrong? Several things are going wrong. The most popular and common belief is that conditions such as Asperger’s, ADD, autism and dyslexia are all separate problems. This widely held but wrong belief believes that there is no cause or cure for these problems. There is an abundant use of psychiatric drugs that mask symptoms but never correct the underlying problem, which in most cases are correctable. Well-meaning teachers and professionals who use academic approaches actually make these conditions worse. These statistics are staggering to say the least, but the fact is these statistics do not matter as much as the fact that your child is struggling with one of these conditions. They are much more than a statistic! Children with neurologic developmental delays and learning disabilities are different from other children because they feel different. Functional neurologist and neuroscientist have long understood that in order for the human brain to function normally it must have proper communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain and the body. Recent research has confirmed that although there are two separate sides to the brain with different

8 The Whole Kid and Kaboodle Summer 2015

responsibilities, they work together as a whole. If there is a communication problem between the two hemispheres and/or the body then a myriad of behavioral, social and learning difficulties can arise.

Recent research has confirmed that although there are two separate sides to the brain with different responsibilities, they work together as a whole. As I have stated before, for the brain to function properly it must have two basic things: fuel (glucose, oxygen, and nutrient levels) and activation (proper stimulation from the body to the brain and from the environment to the brain). Research shows that the two sides of the brain do not mature at the same rate and electrical impulses can get out of balance. This imbalance interferes with communication and function. This condition has a name and it is called Functional Disconnection Syndrome (FDS). FDS has been recognized for over 100 years when scientist became aware that certain neurological conditions are the result of communication problems between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. In the 1970’s the concept of FDS was used to explain a condition called Alexia-the inability to read words.

The good news about the brain is that it can change. The good news about the brain is that it can change. Over the last several decades neuroscientists have found that the brain is continually changing based upon the amount and type of stimulation it receives. With the proper type of stimulation new connection in the weak side of the brain can improve function and get the brain back into rhythm. When the brain begins to function as a whole again a disconnected child becomes reconnected again. In order to help a child with these types of

conditions you must act differently than what is commonly done in traditional medicine. 1. You must understand that this problem has a solution and you must seek to find the imbalances and weak areas of the brain that can be retrained and put back into rhythm. 2. You must realize that medications are not the answer. Medication may be needed for severe symptoms but they are not the solution. All psychiatric drugs lose their ability to control symptoms over time and they affect the brains ability to do what it normally and naturally should do. 3. You must not promote the child’s strengths. Until now all treatment that is performed for these types of conditions are not specific. It affects the brain bilaterally (both hemispheres the same) resulting in the treatment continuing to drive the imbalance. Proper treatment protocols must address the weak areas of the brain only, to catch them up and balance them with the strong areas.

4. You must realize that although there are many different names for these conditions, they all have one solution. This involves finding out what nutritional and activation deficiencies exist and then meeting those needs for a sufficient amount of time until neuroplasticity is achieved. In the next article we will discuss the different symptoms and conditions of left brain deficiencies versus right brain deficiencies. COUNTING YOUR BUBBLES Have you ever fallen into the trap of being so focused on the next big blessing that you miss the many meaningful little blessings that happen far more frequently along the way?

so because I am trying to teach her the process of making responsible choices and allowing the consequences of her decisions to teach her, I didn’t force my point On Monday we bought a bubble gun at the zoo. It came with two containers of bubble liquid, one to be used and a refill. By the time we left the zoo most of the first container had been discharged at the zoo. Later that week Zoey and I decided to go to one of her favorite local parks - she wanted to take the bubble gun to play with. When I got the bubble gun, I realized she was now half way through the second container of bubble liquid. I suggested a quick stop at the dollar store before going to the park to get more bubble liquid. Zoey didn’t want to make the stop, so because I am trying to teach her the process of making responsible choices and allowing the consequences of her decisions to teach her, I didn’t force my point. We headed for the park. As we started to walk to the park it became clear that the 3 AA batteries that powered the bubble gun were weak and needed to be replaced. I recommended replacing the batteries and suggested one more time getting more liquid, but she was happy just to replace the batteries and get to the park as quickly as possible. She was eager to let the kids at the park see her new bubble gun. So with the batteries changed and half a container of bubbles we arrived at the park. Zoey’s bubble gun was a hit. The other kids loved it. Soon she had a small crowd around her wanting to see and take a turn with the gun while chasing the bubbles. I was proud of her for letting the other kids take turns shooting the gun. But it wasn’t very long before - you guessed it - the bubbles ran out!

you guessed it - the bubbles ran out Unknown to us another family had come to the park that day with bubbles. They had no bubble gun, just a large container of bubbles and a bubble wand. If you are a Dad, you will probably know that there

10 The Whole Kid and Kaboodle Summer 2015

is no guarantee of generating consistently quality bubbles with the ‘old school’ bubble wand. Whoever came up with the bubble gun idea was brilliant and did us Dad’s a huge favor! When we arrived the two girls whose family had brought the extra bubble liquid were among the kids that were immediately interested in Zoey’s bubble gun. In fact, one of these girls was using the bubble gun when it finally ran out. Of course as soon as the bubbles were gone she took the bubble gun right over to her Dad and asked him to refill it, which he very generously did, two times. Coincidence? So often we are looking for God in the big things that we miss what he is consistently doing in the small things. Zoey had sown friendship and sharing with her bubble gun and had reaped friendship and two refills of bubble liquid from her grateful new friends.

God is still in the blessing business It is a very healthy discipline to intentionally cultivate an awareness of the many small but meaningful ways God consistently reveals his goodness in our lives. Instead of focusing on what we don’t have it is wise to make the effort to focus and celebrate what we do have. Maybe you already make a practice of this, in the old days they called it, “Counting your blessings!” Guess what? God is still in the blessing business. If you don’t believe it maybe it’s time to start looking for them. Instead of taking these blessings for granted start looking for the many ways he shows up throughout your day. I think you’ll be amazed. “It is mockery to think you can sow and not reap!”

Mike and Shari May are the lead Pastors at Pipeline Church in Humble. They are the parents of daughter Zoey, age 6.

The process of play By Dr. Lin Day, Baby Sensory

Most play involves use of the hands in some way, starting first with swiping and then with proper reaching: the result of weeks of repeated practice. These little experiments soon lead on to grasping, which means that objects can be brought to the mouth for exploration. Mouthing decreases when babies start using their hands to explore and manipulate objects. For example, they may squeeze a soft toy with their hands or investigate the properties of a textured object with their fingertips. With the development of the pincer grip, babies waste little time in working out how to pick up the smallest object. At this time, parents must be extra cautious about safety. Anything that is small enough to be swallowed should be removed and plug sockets should be covered up. Babies also learn best when they can experience things that they can see, hear, feel, touch, smell, and taste. It is how they gain knowledge of themselves and learn about the world. It is through exploration of objects that discoveries are made and problems are solved. When the baby engages in play, the growth of interconnecting circuits within and between the brain cells is accelerated. Through repetitive practice, these connections become hard-wired for life. The process of play is far more important that toys. However, toys Play enhances: are usually the main objects that babies play with because they have the advantage of being safe and specially adapted to their age and abilities. Toys • Curiosity that capture attention and provide endless entertainment include rattles, musical toys, plastic tea sets and play food, books with brightly colored • Exploration pictures and a toy telephone. Toys that help develop crucial skills such as • Self-discovery problem-solving and perseverance include large plastic bricks, balls, nesting • Reasoning & planning skills cups and stackers. Toys that develop fine motor skills include puzzles and • Problem-solving crayons. Toys that develop gross motor skills include push-along or ride-on • Memory toys. Providing the best conditions for play does not mean purchasing the • Concentration most expensive toys on the market. Very often, homemade or household • Intelligence objects offer the best value and will keep baby happy, interested and busy. • Understanding Exploring everyday items can fill babies with wonder and excitement and • Language development create an extremely rich learning experience. However, if the object fits • Hand-eye coordination through a kitchen roll cylinder then it is not safe. Here are a few ideas that will capture baby’s attention and lead learning and development forwards: • Imagination

• Confidence

• A blanket or quilt with toys attached to short lengths of ribbon sewn • The senses along the sides can be used as a play mat (also useful on long car journeys). • A cardboard box filled with different fabrics. • Pots and pans. • Books with different textures glued to each page. • Plastic containers made into sound shakers (the lids must be secured). • Measuring cups and large plastic spoons. • A treasure basket filled with interesting objects such as paper cups and plates, a sock with a ball in the toe, a soft brush, reflective paper or a shiny box. Other types of play might include listening to stories or music, dancing, singing, rhymes and songs, bouncing games and peek-a-boo. Including babies in household chores, taking them shopping and swimming are also forms of play. In addition, going to a parent and baby group can offer scope for social play and the opportunity for fun conversations to develop. Babies also enjoy going to the park, going on a nature walk or just being outside where they can investigate the world with their senses and their whole bodies.

My Grandest Souvenirs Recently, the Hubs and I traveled out of the country on business. One of the last texts I received before we left was from my oldest child, asking me to return with souvenirs. It has been my habit while traveling to bring back something for my best friend and my children. As I was traveling, I thought about the significance of a souvenir. Why do we purchase them? Why do we love to get them? They remind us of the fun we had. They remind others that we thought of them in that moment when ‘we wish you were here.’

They are the focus of all my ‘crystal moments. As I continued to ponder the significance of the souvenir, I came to the conclusion that my children are the greatest souvenir in my life. They are the focus of all my ‘crystal moments.’ You know, those moments (good or bad) that are just frozen in time. Those moments that, while they happened years ago, can evoke the same feelings, tears, joy, heartache as if it were happening again right now. I always ‘wish they were here.’ They are the fabric of my life, and no event is complete unless shared with them. These days, most of the time, this sharing is not in the flesh. My thoughts will often include them in the moment as my memory reaches back to a time when they were about my knees, and the day to day happenings were weighty with promise. I remember the special times: the family jokes, the baby words that are unique to our collective consciousness (and still used today) that would be meaningless to anyone outside the circle.

I remember the special times: the family jokes, the baby words that are unique to our collective consciousness Yes, the most significant souvenirs in my life are my children. They have no clue. They think that they are out on their own. They see themselves as autonomous adults. They are, but in my heart, they are my treasure. I re-live every memory, both the grand and the tragic. The memories are hung like ornaments on my heart, and if they could see them, the would know that I am their loudest cheerleader, their most vicious guardian, and the priest who intercedes for them daily.

Yes, the grandest souvenirs of my life are my children. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord; and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Psalm 127:3 Until next time, Dr. Polly

EARLY ORTHODONTICS EXAMS MAY INTERCEPT PROBLEM The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist at age 7. This may surprise you because most people associate orthodontic treatment or braces with children age 12 or older. You do not have to wait until all permanent teeth are erupted. An early examination by an orthodontist could stop a developing problem from getting worse by the time a patient reaches 12. Problems that should be corrected early include crossbites ( where the upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth), mouth breathing, jaws that pop or click, severely protrusive front teeth, thumb or finger sucking (age 7 or older), and overlapping or crowding of erupting teeth. Many times crossbites develop due to mouth breathing. The tongue does not rest in the roof of the mouth supporting the inside of the upper teeth in a mouth breather, and therefore the upper teeth collapse in, many times fitting inside the lower teeth. This will cause the jaw to deviate to one side or the other, putting stress on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This stress can cause popping and clicking and a breakdown of the joint ligaments later in life. This can be prevented with early expansion by the orthodontist using a simple appliance not involving full braces. The expansion will not hold if the mouth breathing continues, so I recommend the patient see an ear, nose and throat specialist to check for airway problems such as enlarged tonsils or adenoids, enlarged turbinates in the sinus, deviated septum, and allergies. Protrusive upper teeth should be corrected early too. This is especially important when a patient cannot close his lips over his teeth comfortably. With poor lip posture, the lower lip pushes the upper teeth out more and more as the patient grows older. The upper lip lies functionless with the lower lip. Because of this, it becomes shorter and has very little muscle tone. If this patient waits until 12 to have his teeth corrected, it may mean many years in braces, and even then, the smile will look gummy due to the short upper lip that never developed while the patient was growing from age 7 to 12. Thumb and finger sucking should be stopped by the time the permanent front teeth are erupting at age 6 ½ to 7 ½. We used a system of rewards to motivate a patient to cut down and eventually stop his thumb sucking. This usually works without resorting to an expensive appliance. Much can be done to help any of these problems. A complementary orthodontic exam could save hundreds of dollars on braces later. Often, we will simply recommend you see your dentist to have some baby teeth removed early. This will help to redistribute crowding from the front of the mouth, where the permanent teeth are larger than the tiny baby teeth, to the back, where the erupting permanent teeth are smaller than the large baby molars. I have seen severe anterior rotations completely unravel, thereby minimizing brace work later. If left alone, rotations can always be corrected at age 12, but it takes much longer and results are not as stable. If a tooth erupts in straight, it will tend to stay that way. If it is rotated and straightened with braces, it will have a tendency to turn back unless retainers are worn very conscientiously after treatment. Orthodontics can straighten teeth and improve smiles at any age, but there is usually a best age for treatment to begin. An early exam by your orthodontist can help intercept a problem early and ensure the best and most stable result for your child. Early treatment achieves results that are unattainable once the face and jaws have finished growing. The benefits will last a lifetime with good functional, straight teeth that are easy to clean, and the self-confidence to smile when one goes for that college or first job interview.

Creating A H.O.M.E. Environment When separation, divorce, unwed births occur the children are the ones who sometimes suffer the most. Children from single parent families may blame themselves.

themselves it may produces less than ideal behavior. Ask our teachers, they are the ones who deal with these issues daily. What would happen if the practice of “child centric” single parenting occurred?

Growing up in a home when you feel like you are the reason for parents’ separation is stressful for children. A boy or girl living with this If you are a single parent give unresolved emotional yourself a break. There are no dilemma needs the ability to perfect parents because none ask questions. Humble ISD Education Foundation: A 16-year miracle in the making! By Dr. Guy Sconzo Humble ISD Superintendent It really is a blessing for us to live and work in a community so focused on children. Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than in the amazing success of the Humble ISD Education Foundation. I like to describe the Foundation’s success as a “16-year-miracle in the making!”

“16-year-miracle in the making!” The Humble ISD Education Foundation began in 1999, raising $48,000 in its first year. Sixteen years later, the Foundation annually raises $1.25 million. In fact, we are among just 12 school district education foundations in Texas to annually raise more than $1 million. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $7.8 million to support projects that enhance learning. What a generous and caring community we are blessed to call home!

the Foundation annually raises $1.25 million Dollars raised by the Foundation go to work advancing student learning and defining next practices by providing funds for innovative student programming. Camp Nobis Est, for example, was started in 2011 thanks to a $4,075 grant from the Humble ISD Education Foundation. A summer day camp, Camp Nobis Est (Latin for “It’s up to us”) offers incoming sixth-graders a week of fun activities such as a ropes course, the Why Try curriculum, and a field trip, that teach time management, organizational skills, and college and career readiness. Students develop self-confidence while building relationships with peers who will be attending their middle school.

Through the years, Camp Nobis Est has grown in the number of students served. Because of Camp Nobis Est, the National School Boards Association awarded Humble ISD a National First Place 2015 Magna Award. The Magna Awards honor school districts for taking innovative steps to improve the lives of their students and communities.

Providing funding for new projects - like Camp Nobis Est - is how the Foundation makes a lasting difference. “That is what fuels, in part, change in our district,” School Board Vice President Keith Lapeze explains. Camp Nobis Est was so successful that a second camp, Keep Calm and Lead On, was started for incoming ninth graders.

“The noble work of an educator requires problem-solving,”

Jerri Monbaron, Director of the Humble ISD Office of Community Development, said. “Teachers continually ask themselves, ‘What could I be doing differently to help students advance in their learning?’ The Foundation’s innovative education grants program offers educators a pathway for suggesting answers to that question and trying out their ideas. This is the power behind our Education Foundation. Donors provide the funding so educators can work outside the box in meeting students’ needs. Where the work of the Foundation and our educators intersect is truly where inspiration meets innovation”.

“Teachers continually ask themselves, ‘What could I be doing differently to help students advance in their learning?’ There is place for YOU to be a part of the amazing work of the Humble ISD Education Foundation!

This school year, please consider volunteering, financially sponsoring, or buying tickets to attend an event that raises funds for innovative education grants. These include the fall Golf Tournament; winter BBQ Cook-Off and Rodeo; and spring Gala.

Wish List 2.0, published at www.humbleisdfoundation.org, allows donors to fund supplies requested by teachers and schools. Many schools also operate Annual Funds, where cash pledges are collected instead of the school engaging in other types of third-party fundraisers. Tax receipts are provided for donations.

To become involved, visit www.humbleisdfoundation.org or call the Office of Community Development at 281-641-8140.

What is Parent Facilitation by Delona Laxton

Someone once asked me to describe my clientele. I thought for a moment and replied with something an attorney told me after I first started practicing law. I work with good people going through the worst time of their lives. These regular everyday people are angry, hurt, and are acting very erratic; they need someone to be calm in the storm that is their life. The basic parent facilitation program lasts for three to four months. We build communication skills to enhance a parent’s ability to co-parent effectively. I meet with each parent individually to get an overview of where they are in the emotional part of the process. Then I meet with both parents to:

I work with good people going through the worst time of their lives. 1. Explain the law that governs parent facilitation. 2. Go over the divorce rules. For a complete list go to http://www.parent-facilitator.com/forparents.html. 3. Establish a line of communication and the rules for that communication. This can be difficult when emotions are high and there is a high level of conflict. The rules include basic things like not interrupting one another, no name calling, and no cursing. Co-parents must learn to control the volume and tone as well as maintaining eye contact and listening during their conversations.

Co-parenting is very difficult when you have “Tiger-Mom” and “Disneyland Dad.” 4. I then help them identify their parenting style and show them how the different parenting styles can cause conflict if you do not recognize and understand the other parent’s style. Coparenting is very difficult when you have “TigerMom” and “Disneyland Dad.” So we must work to find a happy medium and it is not always easy.

22 The Whole Kid and Kaboodle Summer 2015

5. We establish common goals and build team skills for helping their children to be happy and healthy. Words like “I,” “me,” and “mine” are replaced by “we” and “our.” I like to eliminate the legalese from their vocabulary such as “on-duty” parent rather than possessory parent. Along with common goals are establishing common rules and consequences. It is very confusing for a child to eat wherever he wants at one home then only at the dinner table at the other home. 6. Once we have common goals in place we work on recognizing our own issues and how they cause conflict in and around the children. It is too easy for adult issues to be brought into the children’s lives. It is difficult to maintain boundaries when children see the stress that the financial loss is taking on one parent or the pain one parent is in due to things such as infidelity.

We must always remember children need to feel safe and loved no matter where they are. 7. We cover topics such as anger management and parental alienation. How do you demonstrate anger? Do you slam doors, yell and scream or are you passive aggressive and sarcastic? It is important to know how you demonstrate anger in order to channel it away from the children. 8. Then, if a parenting plan is not already established, we create a parenting plan that works for the family. We must always remember children need to feel safe and loved no matter where they are. It is always better for the children if both parents are financially healthy, and stable. UH GOLF CAMP www.houstongolfcamp.com July 24th-26th, August 7-9th, Decemer 28th-30th. age 8-18

Savvy Safety for Summer and Beyond Summertime: funtime with laughter and memorable moments. Enjoy a few safety tips before filling your days with travel and pool parties.

The majority of attacks against women are by someone she knows. Be sure you are alert to changes in someone’s behavior toward you Self-defense: the right to defend oneself with whatever force is reasonably necessary, against actual or threatened violence. It is part of strategic living, not skills you use only when you find yourself in a scary confrontation. 90% of self-defense is awareness which stems from common sense and education. Most of us realize the security risks of clubs and bars. However, few think about public parks, public restrooms, amusement parks, libraries, public games - laser tag, as open feeding grounds for perpetrators. Engaging your situational awareness can make the difference between becoming an easy target or not being targeted. 1.

*Situational Awareness: remaining alert in the present moment and aware of the reality of the present situation. In doing so, if our reality suddenly changes and becomes dangerous, we are better able to accept the threat and take action to get to safety.

2. *Engage your peripheral vision and notice what others miss; people, cars, objects AND their proximity to you. 3. *Powerful defenses: confident demeanor, heightened awareness and empowered preparedness.

6. *Refrain from posting your travels and photos of trips until you return home, if at all. Don’t tell the world your home is empty. 7. *Be cautious about your social media posts! Your articles and pictures say a lot about you, your interests and possibly your whereabouts. 8. *The majority of attacks against women are by someone she knows. Practice Makes Perfect Have you ever heard of practice makes perfect? Practice is the key to get good and goals are the way to succeed. Golf is a sport that takes time and you have to learn the game. It’s an individual sport however there are a lot of awesome programs that make it fun and you get to meet a lot of great people.

I have a passion for golf and want to play against the best. There are some leagues out there that are great at starting that competitive hunger. If you want to play competitive golf you are going to have to practice and practice a lot. Practice doesn’t mean that you just hit balls all day long. You can play a lot of skills games. For instance my new coach, Sammy Hanson, taught me the ladder game. You have to putt your ball each time a little farther and make a climbing ladder. It’s hard but it shows you how to control the speed of the ball and rhythm.

So if you want to play competitive golf here are some tips that I have learned in my journey so far. The first program that I entered is STPGA Little Linksters. This league is great as it has different skill levels to begin at. I started only playing 5 holes and after reaching a goal you get to move up to a harder level. Do you have what it takes to move up? A program that just started a couple years ago is PGA Jr League Team Golf. This is A LOT of FUN. You get to play against teams and play in a scramble format. That means that you and your partner play the best ball from each stroke. We also get Jerseys, real jerseys with numbers on it, and play teams from around town. I have met some incredible friends from team golf that I know we will be friends for a long time. This program also has some cool golf professionals like Rory McIlroy and Michelle Wie that are junior golf ambassadors of the league. If you just want to see how your skills match against others I suggest checking out the drive, chip, and putt championship. It’s a skills challenge and you can also be on TV if you get to the finals, one of my goals in the future.

After you get some experience there are some tournaments that are for real competition. I am just starting this summer to get into these but I am excited to test my skills. This summer, Waco, TX is hosting the

26 The Whole Kid and Kaboodle Summer 2015

Starburst Championship. Yes like the candy. People and families from all over come to this tournament to see juniors golf but also for the big golf ball drop. A helicopter drops tons of golf balls in a field and you have to find some for prizes. Golf and Candy, YES!

Another big tournament this summer that I am going to is the IMG Junior Golf Championship in San Diego, Ca. You have to qualify or get accepted. There are kids coming from Japan, China, Mexico, Australia, Europe, Singapore, and other places from the world. This is going to be a great experience to meet other cultures and play some great golf.

How do you prepare before a tournament? Here are some tips: •

Get water and snacks.

•

Wear appropriate golf clothes.

•

Go to the bathroom before you play.

•

Always have sunscreen and a hat for the sun.

So go out and join one of these programs. I am positive you will make some great friends as I did. Contact me if you have any questions at bellaflores912@ gmail.com

Lifeline Some decisions are more difficult than others and an unintended pregnancy is not easy. Often, there is a human life hanging in the balance. Pregnancy care centers reach out to women who find themselves in an unwanted pregnancy and have pregnancy related needs. At a care center women will find compassion and help without judgment or condemnation. Services provided include pregnancy testing, on-site ultrasounds, one on one peer counseling, relationship counseling, options counseling, information on abortion and adoptions; pre-natal classes up to time of delivery, and parenting classes after the birth, postabortion support, enrichment classes, and material assistance. All services are provided free of charge and by a volunteer staff. If God is commanding us to care for those whose livelihood is in jeopardy, would not God also be commanding us to care for those whose very lives are in jeopardy. If God is commanding us to care for those whose livelihood is in jeopardy, would not God also be commanding us to care for those whose very lives are in jeopardy. Today God calls His people to minister within our community.

pregnancy care center will refer it to their friends and often bring them in for the same care they received. There is such a great and wide-spread need that those who are helped will create a ripple effect.

Volunteers are needed to serve as a receptionist, clerical work peer counselor, post abortion recovery counselor, mentoring to mom’s, class facilitator, adoptions educator, nurse, shepherding homes, special event assistants, baby blanket program, organizing donations.

Pregnancy care centers are a 501c3 organization and supported by individuals, churches, and businesses. This is a place where members within the community can find a place of service. Imagine finding out you are pregnant with no job, no financial support, and maybe no support of any kind from family or friends. You could be the person they meet when they walk in the door that will build a relationship with them, listen to them, encourage, them, and help them as they make those important choices. One on one, one at a time you can change not just one life but their future and that of their families.

When your Brain is Wired differently A curious incident involving a friend of mine prompted this column. Without going into details the incident revolved around her child being excluded from activities. This family has struggled for many years to help their daughter understand, cope with, and overcome the fact that her brain is wired differently from others. Many families face this struggle on a daily basis. In May a pilot made an emergency landing to kick off an autistic girl and her family. At a graduation ceremony in Spring one fifth grader was not even acknowledged. There were no accommodations made to get her wheelchair on stage so they simply forgot to call her name.

How can we show compassion and help? A friend and parent to special needs kids says “ Everyone can’t do everything the same way and we have to dispel the notion of fair and recognize that fair is different than need.” In the airlines incident the parent asked to buy hot food from First Class to calm her daughter but was told no, it couldn’t be done. Apparently it was easier and more cost effective to make an emergency landing.

A fall, a car accident or a stroke and your world changes.

In May a pilot made an emergency landing to kick off an autistic girl and her family.

My friend also pointed out that “the special needs group is the only minority you can join at any time.” A fall, a car accident or a stroke and your world changes.

How does a parent feel when this happens to their child? You cannot undo the stares, take back the rude comments or mend the heartbreak of exclusion. What is it like to parent these children? From an article in The UK’s The Guardian, a mom says, “the odds seem stacked against you, and if people would just give you a bit of space and support, it would go a long way, but you’re struggling to start with, then people knock you down further. They make assumptions about you and treat your child as though he or she is dangerous or badly behaved. Its soul destroying. “

So as you enjoy the less stressful time of summer, take some time to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Back away from the criticism, let the judgement go, encourage and support. Compliment the family and the kids for doing the right thing. Acknowledge the hard work and the effort. Praise them. Build them up. It will lift their spirits and yours.

They make assumptions about you and treat your child as though he or she is dangerous or badly behaved. Its soul destroying. “ Many of the parents I work with tell me how frustrated they are in church, supermarkets or restaurants when their child acts up, melts down or simply won’t budge. One mom tearfully said “I just want to shout, we try, we really do.” Another commented ‘We’re in the same boat as you.” It can be especially difficult if your child has an invisible disability such as aspergers, sensory integration disorder or tourettes. He may look like any other kid on the playground but he might be making strange noises or be in his own world repetitively twirling streamers. The family in the restaurant looks like all the other families having dinner until their child starts screaming because the food doesn’t look right. Of course no one wants this to happen; not the family, the families at the other tables or the child.
