What have you done for me lately? Put a crazy cool bird of prey on your July cover – an eagle diving through storm clouds over an old-time sailing ship tossed on stormy seas to represent the requisite, patriotic, Independence Day-ish concept of Liberty, and what do you do for August – a month devoid of anything much in Texas beyond heat, heat, and more heat? Go cooler, of course, with a more earthbound fowl, the star of many a comedy.

Penguin? Not a bad idea, but for a homegrown mag, it doesn’t exactly fit in with your good ol’ boy Texas image. Only choice is the Roadrunner, the bane of the Coyote and the epitome of poise under pressure. Proves your bona fides as a daring, unorthodox publication that’s not afraid, two months in a row, to give its readers (you can hear this one beep-beeping a mile away) – the bird. –Michael Abedin

he other day I went to a local Sprint phone store to get a newer modem. As it turned out, a miracle happened. I’ve been a Sprint customer for more than ten years, and have a collection of modems that are now prehistoric. I once took a few of them to the store and clerks took pictures of them. They’d never seen the old models. They were like dinosaurs to them. So I picked up a new, improved, whiz-bang, latest greatest modem and drove off. At home, I realized the modem didn’t have a power cord.

Apparently I left it at the store. Dismayed, I called the store and asked for the clerk who waited on me. “This is Angie,” she said, brightly. “Angie, I think I left –” “You left the power cord here!” she interrupted, remembering me. “I forgot to put it in the box.” I started to complain about how this would require another drive back to the city. I wasn’t looking forward to it, as the store isn’t around the corner. I live in the Hill Country, not the city. Before I could say much of anything, Angie interrupted me. “I’ll bring it to you,” she said.

I was stunned. I was speechless. I was quiet for a moment while I replayed what I heard, not believing it. “You’ll bring it to me?” I asked. “I don’t live near you, you know.” “It’s okay,” she said. “It’s my fault and I’d be glad to drive it to you right after I get off work today.” She did, too. She was all smiles as she handed me the cord at my house. “Do you live out here?” I asked. “No, but don’t think anything of it,” she said. “It was my choice.” Angie’s astonishing customer service and upbeat attitude got me thinking about a book one of my nephews told me

about – Extreme Ownership, a New York Times bestseller by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. It explains the leadership skills of the U.S. Navy Seals. It’s well written, with stories from the military and business, with principles they teach to get stellar results. What interested me was the idea of full – or extreme – responsibility. In my books Zero Limits and AT Zero, I talk about total responsibility as a principle of ho’oponopono. Extreme Ownership strips away the spirituality and explains “extreme responsibility” as a practical tool in business and life. I have no idea if Angie read it, but her instant willingness to satisfy her customer reflected an attitude of total responsibility.

She didn’t pass the buck. She didn’t tell me to drive back in. She didn’t complain, blame, or refrain. She took responsibility. She took extreme ownership. And she has a friend, a fan, and a fanatic customer for life.

How does this apply to you? Whenever you’re about to complain someone didn’t do something you asked, turn it around and claim “extreme ownership” for the problem. Look in the mirror – accept responsibility for your own lack of communicating how important the job was. Look to yourself for your lack of leadership skills.

Then do something to correct it. Recently I watched a brief biography of President John F. Kennedy. When the Bay of Pigs was a disaster in 1961 and soldiers lost their lives, Kennedy went on national television and accepted total responsibility for the tragedy. You may not be president, but you ask people to do things, and they often don’t do them. Are you going to blame them, or find a way to resolve the issue? Extreme ownership – whether taught by Navy Seals or practitioners of ho’oponopono – is about taking full responsibility, fixing the problem from within you. Of course, at a certain point, you may decide to remove people who aren’t doing what they promise, no matter how many times or different ways you explain it.

That’s when you say, “You’re fired!” That decision only comes after exhausting your alternatives and taking extreme responsibility for the results – or lack of them. As my new motto states, “It is what you accept.” What are you accepting?

April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land… –T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land

Not a bad skill to have.

April? The cruelest month? Hah. TS, T.S. You obviously never spent any time in Texas in August. No lilacs hereabouts in August – maybe not even in April, come to think of it. Plenty of dead land, though, even though the rains of spring gave us a bit of a reprieve and filled up the lake, which no one really believed would ever happen again. (Run out and get a big ol’ honkin’ new pick ‘em up truck or giant SUV, and wash it every day. Plenty of water now, and gas is cheap again, right?) August in Austin can be sort of a dead zone, particularly after what, by all accounts from most folks with a bit of awareness, has been a rough summer. Whether it’s astrological, energetic, one of those delightful transitions to the next level of whatever, or just part of the current bizarre social, cultural, and political landscape, it ain’t been the prettiest few months. So, whaddaya do? When the sky’s a shimmering golden grid of heat and the sun’s hovering behind you like a giant fractal peyote button, when you’re surrounded by cactus and there’s a mean-eyed culebra lurking – wtf do you do?

Juju comes and juju goes. Leaving tracks it can’t follow is a pretty good strategy, and sometimes just making tracks is your best bet – which is a good lead-in to one of those tales that starts out with a young disciple coming to his teacher… “I’m ready for enlightenment,” the disciple says. His teacher takes him to a door, tells him enlightenment is at the end of a hallway on the other side. The disciple reaches for the door, but the teacher stops him. “In the hallway,” he says, “every fear, every demon that’s ever haunted you, will rise up and tear at your very soul, as if from the pits of perdition itself. If it becomes too much to bear, you can always turn around and come back.” “What if I’ve gone too far to turn back?” the disciple asks. “Then,” his teacher says, “you run like hell for the other side.” Good advice. If you think your job is to dig into your stuff till you figure it all out, you’ll be dancing with your demons for a long, long time. Sometimes it’s better just to make tracks, and if you take a lesson from Roadrunner, you make them X-shaped – and you do it with poise. Roadrunner’s Latin name, btw, is geococcyx Californianus, which is what you call the LA-hole who zips in front of you in his Beemer on the 35.

Show some poise.

Attention.

Poise, like personality, goes a long way. It means you know when to stand still, when to disappear in a puff of smoke, and when to jump straight up and let the coyote go right over the cliff on his Acme Rocket Skates. Like a Roadrunner, baby, as Junior Walker says in the song. Beep beep, indeed. The People, the Native tribes of the Southwest, say Roadrunner is a medicine bird, renowned for his speed. His footprints are X-shaped, so malignant spirits can’t follow him, and the Pueblo tribes consider them a talisman to ward off bad juju.

Michael Garfield, Austin-based visionary artist, musician, writer, and Renaissance man, calls his August cover bird portrait Atttention – pretty much a prerequisite for maintaining any degree of poise. “Roadrunner,” he says, “appears to help a person navigate a major change – forward escape through transformation.” He paints live at music festivals, and Attention was done in a major windstorm, holding the canvas with one hand and painting with the other. Now that’s poise.

Dinosaurs to Hummingbirds THE V THE VISIONARY VIS ISIONARY SIONARY ART OF MICHAEL GARF GARFIELD GAR RF FIELD IEL LD At least five times in the past five hundred million years, the normally meticulous scalpel of natural selection, which excises this moth or spares that finch on account of the tiniest differences in wing color or beak shape, has become the evolutionary equivalent of a machete. – Darkness Falls on the Dinosaurs, Marcia Bjornerud END OF THE WORLD PARTY (TYRANNOSAURUS REX)

ver sixty-six million years ago, the reign of most of the dinosaurs ended, except for a handful that became, among other things, birds. Geology professor Marica Bjornerud’s excellent July piece in the New Yorker, which calls the great reptiles “not only dramatic in life but also operatic in death,” details the popular theories of their demise – and adds an ironic twist. Seems a big ol’ six-mile wide asteroid crashed into Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula and a cloud of soot shadowed the planet, ceasing photosynthesis and wiping out most of the big herbivores, along with the carnivores that ate them – like T. Rex, their king. The irony? Part of what caused that cloud of soot was flash-heated crude oil deposits in the Yucatan – and here we are, sixty-six million years later, burning crude that might well have been created when T. Rex fell. Nice story. Visionary artist Michael Garfield has some better ones...

BEIJA FLOR

Painted live with oil and acrylic paint on a 3’x4’ canvas at Sonic Bloom Festival 2016, to the music of over twenty bands. A moment of surprise, a burst of color, dinner interrupted by – what? Tyrannosaurus turns to see the unexpected, just off frame. Is it the UFOs that haunt the background of this ancient scene? Or were they always there, and something even stranger lurks just out of sight? Alternatively, our protagonist has waited long and hard for his ET compatriots to land and save the last few dinosaurs by lifting them offworld. The Earth has suffered from two million years’ of asteroid impacts, volcanic eruptions, mass disease, and other catastrophic changes. Those who still survive will find a new home somewhere else, another planet orbiting a distant star – and possibly return, one day.

BEIJA FLOR Painted live with oil and acrylic markers at Firefly Fest 2014, and Sonic Boom Festival 2014. Beija Flor means Flower Kisser in Portuguese. The summer of 2014 was full of visits from hummingbird energy in various ways, and it only seemed appropriate to honor these beautiful creatures with a portrait that recognizes their sublime and joyful spirit. What flower is he kissing? Why, the sublime thousand-petaled lotus connecting us to God, of course – the glass chrysanthemum, the Sahasraha chakra, the seventh or Crown Chakra that mediates our soul’s descent to matter, and through which various spiritual traditions direct attention at the time of death. What better place to plant a kiss? What delicious nectar. YOGA CAREERS

When the student becomes the teacher

To learn yoga, practice it. To master yoga, teach it. – Mehtab, Yoga Yoga founder There’s a shift in consciousness when an avid yoga student decides to become a yoga teacher or therapist, a deep knowing that yoga is a path to health and healing that makes a hectic life more peaceful, even when hectic circumstances don’t (or can’t) change. Regular yoga practice often creates space for the acceptance of existing health conditions, sometimes the first step in healing. As the yoga profession expands and people from all walks of life experience its potential benefits, there’s been a dynamic expansion in yoga as both a part-time avocation and a fulltime vocation. Teaching yoga changes as you change, evolving as your life and family commitments evolve. There’s a good chance your favorite yoga teacher taught part-time their first year, gradually building public classes, private clients, and corporate classes to a full-time career over a few years. (In other words – they finally left their day job!) Teaching loads can increase and decrease as life changes, perfect for mothers and fathers, students, military spouses, health-care professionals, frequent geographic re-locators, and those who believe variety is the spice of life. Yoga can be a part-time supplemental career, or a full-time profession for passionate educators, complementary healthcare professionals, researchers, and scientists. It’s a profession uniquely situated between science, health care, and the spiritual life – there’s a growing body of accepted yoga-based research concerning its impact on chronic health conditions.

QIGONG

9/11 and an NYFD Firefighter by Michel Abedin Coming up on fifteen years ago, America learned something the rest of the world had known for a long time – that lives can be lost and history changed in an instant, literally from out of the blue. 9/11/2001 launched wars and counter waves of terrorism, undermining our safety and security and leading to the ugliness of our current political and social discourse.

It also ended the lives of many of the first rescue workers.

That includes three hundred forty-three New York firefighters – and the toll continues to climb. Cancer, respiratory disease, depression, substance abuse, and other physical and emotional aftereffects continue to whittle away at the ranks of 9/11 heroes. Jonathan Henderson searched for lost friends in the ruins, volunteering for thirty days of twelve-hour shifts to recover their remains. “My lungs and sinuses suffered major damage, and everything from hearing loss to depression set in, causing me to balloon to over three hundred pounds.” At a funeral for a firefighter who died of 9/11 related lung cancer, he mentioned the low turnout to his Lieutenant, who said, “I’ll show up for your funeral”. Henderson turned and said, “I’ll show up for yours too, pal.” Healthcare for those who survived the attack has been so mismanaged that gadfly filmmaker Michael Moore took a boatload of them to a country where American heroes could receive quality, inexpensivehealthcare – Cuba. He documented it in his eye-opening 2007 film Sicko.

Henderson hasn’t gone to Cuba, or his funeral. Instead, he sought alternative care and spiritual healing. “During a vision, I saw myself healthy, on a beach, practicing a slow martial art. I ate organic foods and smoothies and removed toxic food and people from my life for a two-year sabbatical, to get well.” He also found his way to Qigong, which he’d seen in his vision. “9/11/2013, I was with FDNY retirees, reading names of rescue workers lost twelve years earlier. I went to the beach that morning and did Qigong with a rising sun, by myself for the first time ever – as my spiritual vision showed me. It made the most difficult day of the year easier, and gave me peace and calmness that stays with me now.” Qi Revolution, August 26-28, Austin Convention Center. $99 for two and a half days of Qigong Training. BATTLEFIELD ACUPUNCTURE

Warrior arts and healing arts. Two sides to the same coin, the yin and yang of focusing energy. In Hawaii, the kahuna lapa’au developed energy healing techniques to get downed warriors back in the fight, or off the field of battle. Aromatherapy is said to have originated when ancient Greek warriors were anointed with healing oils when they returned from battle, to restore them to balance before they returned to their homes and families. In rural areas of China, the village sifu, or martial arts instructor, was also traditionally the village bonesetter, herbalist, or acupuncturist. In more modern times, miracle drugs like sulfa and other antibiotics became the treatment of choice for bacterial infections largely because of their role in World War II, saving the lives of wounded soldiers. In 2001, healing techniques for injured warriors came full circle when a U.S. Air Force physician began researching a program based on the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture.

Ching Chang in 1962 to seventy-three students, including Dr. Wei Chieh Young. It uses mostly distal points on the extremities, sometimes called “miracle points or “magic points, characterized by simplicity and fewer points and sessions to get long-lasting results, including management of pain and the effects of chronic conditions like cancer and stroke. t %S )VBOH T "VSJDVMBS .FEJDJOF Dr. Li-Chun Huang is recognized as the world’s leading holistic and functional acupuncture therapy expert, specializing in a complementary scientific medical system developed over thirty-five years that can diagnose and treat diseases of the body and mind solely through the ears. Auricular therapy is commonly used for pain, psychological problems, emotional imbalance, stress, anxiety, depression, sleeping disorders, addictions, and food cravings.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, where troops encounter improvised weapons that cause traumatic injury without killing, have created whole a new set of challenges for recovering veterans, including the use of expensive and addictive painkillers, and antidepressants for PTSD and other psychological disorders. The 2001 research eventually evolved into a military program using small, semi-permanent needles on selected points in the ear. Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) has been shown to reduce acute pain by as much as seventy-five percent in five minutes or less, and greatly increases range of motion for injured joints and limbs. All of this is without the risk of addiction or side effects of pharmaceutical treatments – side effects shown to include violent outbursts, even suicidal tendencies. Both of those have become widespread among vets, a nasty little secret the Pentagon isn’t very proud of. BFA is also available to civilians. Winnie Tan, of Austin’s Winnie Acubalance, uses it as a simple and safe procedure for almost immediate pain relief, using fewer needles and offering powerful and longer-lasting results. Her practice also uses other more traditional and lesser-known acupuncture techniques, including: t #BMBODF .FUIPE "DVQVODUVSF #." Based on the ancient Chinese I Ching text dating back to the Zhou Dynasty of 136 BC, BMA applies the principles of the Ba Gua, the eight trigrams, and the balance of yin and yang energies. It’s been used to treat pain from migraines, fibromyalgia, sciatica, and arthritis, as well as skin disorders and internal conditions like insomnia, PMS, menopause, prostatitis, and impotence. t .BTUFS 5VOH T "DVQVODUVSF Over hundreds of years, the Tung family developed a unique style of authentic Chinese acupuncture only released by Master Tung

Acupuncture and other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine have a long and venerable history, but ancient therapies are only as good as their ability to be applied to modern-day problems. Battlefield Acupuncture was developed to treat physical and psychological wounds that ancient warriors never encountered, including the side effects of drug-based therapies. With the proliferation of new infectious diseases, modern-day stress, and other disorders, acupuncture might represent the best hope of blending ancient and modern techniques into an entirely new form of medicine. Winnie Acubalance, 5555 N. Lamar #L-155, offers acupuncture, massage, and herbal therapies for drug-free treatment of pain, anxiety, and other disorders. (512) 956-6889, www.WinnieAcubalance.com

FIRE IN THE HOLE Cavitations, Wormholes, and the Bermuda Triangle by Michael Abedin “Look, Mom! No cavities! It was 1958, and Crest toothpaste ads showed wholesome, smiling Norman Rockwell kids holding up a clean bill of health from their dentist. No cavities, indeed, but what about – cavitations? A cavity is a hole in the surface of the tooth – a cavitation is a lesion, a hole in the jawbone, one that’s not as readily detectable (or repairable) as a cavity in the tooth’s enamel. Cavitations weren’t a big topic of conversation in 1958. Nearly half a century later, they still aren’t discussed as much as they should be.

Wormholes in your jaw. There’s no single culprit causing cavitations, but it’s their effect that concerns holistic dentist Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health, who’s done extensive studies of cavitation research done by Mark McClure, a dentist and a Doctor of Integrative Medicine with the National Integrated Health Associates. “Cavitations, Carpenter explains, “are toxic waste sites for mercury and other metals found in amalgam fillings and crowns. They accumulate in these holes in the jawbone, and can cause serious long-term health problems. McClure refers to cavitations as NICO – Neurological Inducing Cavitational Osteotis – a fancy way to say “holes in bone that hurt, and can cause things to hurt in other places. He points out some controversies surrounding them: t 5SBEJUJPOBM EFOUBM USBJOJOH BDLOPXMFEHFT /*$0 lesions but minimizes their importance, leaving it to integrative practitioners to spread the word – with the usual possibility of being criticized by mainstream practitioners and professional associations. t 5IF VTVBM USFBUNFOU JT TVSHFSZ /PO TVSHJDBM BMUFSOBUJWF treatment, like chelation therapy, is sometimes possible – but it also has the possibility of being criticized by mainstream practitioners and professional associations. t %JBHOPTJT JT USJDLZ 4UBOEBSE JNBHJOH UFDIOJRVFT PGUFO can’t detect the full extent of NICO sites, which can range from round to what Murphy calls “fingerlike projections extending outward, like worm-holes. It sometimes requires working backwards from a wide range of symptoms, using non-traditional methods like biofeedback that have the possibility of – well, you know the rest.

Alien invaders and the Bermuda Triangle. In sci-fi flicks, aliens can escape through wormholes, or hide in them so you can’t see them because the normal rules

14

of three-dimensional time, space, and physics don’t apply. NICO lesions act the same way. Blood supply shuts down to isolate toxins like mercury that the body’s dumped there, along with metals from old crowns, bridgework, and other procedures – tin, platinum, palladium, nickel, maybe even the occasional plane or ship that disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle. The Triangle is actually a pretty apt analogy, since the effects of cavitations can seem to disappear from the screen entirely, then pop up in other, unlikely locales. The autonomic nervous system, unable to cope with the toxicity, either sets up an interference field of sorts to isolate it, meaning the immune and excretory systems can’t find it, or refers it to other areas – and some of those areas are potentially lethal. A perfect opportunity for cavitations to form is when third molars – wisdom teeth – are removed, especially if more than one comes out at a time. Metabolic activity is high in the extraction sites, making them good candidates for toxic dumpsites. The Chinese determined that acupuncture meridians and their associated organs are connected to teeth, and those third molars, Carpenter points out, are connected to – yep, the Heart Meridian. The toxins lurking in a NICO site can also hamper your energy-producing enzymes and ability to metabolize oxygen. Lack of energy and chronic fatigue symptoms are a good clue that energy is being diverted elsewhere – maybe your mouth and jaw, a hotbed of nerves and circulation connected directly to your cardiovascular system and inches from your brain.

Whatever to do? Research indicates it’s a good idea to get mercury out of your mouth before any major dental surgery. Transcend Dental uses state-of-the-art retrieval systems, and recommends taking good care of wisdom teeth so they can stay put. If extractions are necessary, Carpenter uses a protocol involving ozone, intravenous vitamin C, and complete removal of all ligaments, since they can inhibit full healing and create cavitation sites. There’s no single cause for recent rises in autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, allergies, cancer, Lyme, candida. There’s always a complex set of factors – and some of them may be hiding, deep down in the bones of your jaw. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, natural alternatives to antibiotics, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, and genotype testing for susceptibility to mercury toxicity. FEEDING YOUR FACE Y

ou lead a healthy lifestyle. You exercise, drink filtered water instead of tap or bottled, cook and store food in stainless steel or glass, eat homegrown or organic as much as If it goes on your skin, possible. it goes in your body Good for you. Then, you smear yourself with lead, mercury, aluminum, coal tar, petroleum products, dioxin, urea, phthalates, the Paraben sisters (Ethyl, Methyl, Butyl, and Propyl), and an alphabet soup of MEA, TEA, DEA, BHA, BHT, DBP, PG, PEG, and LSMFT. (Oops – that last one is Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco, which you also probably wouldn’t want to smear on yourself.) All these – and many, many more – are ingredients recognized as toxic, yet still inexplicably allowed to be included in skincare products. No big deal, though. At least you’re not eating all that stuff, right? Wrong. Dead wrong, maybe.

Pecked to death by ducks. Your skin’s a quicker way to absorb toxins than the digestive system – think patches that deliver hormone therapy, or nicotine. Some of those toxins can kill you. Of over 80,000 different chemicals used in commercial body and skincare products, over 10,000 of them are industrial chemicals known to be carcinogens, hormone disruptors, and reproductive toxins. True, there may be only small amounts of them, but a little here, a little there, keeps your detoxification and immune systems too busy to protect you. The development of modern autoimmune diseases is more like being pecked to death by ducks than having a piano fall on you. The FDA is so understaffed and hamstrung by industry lobbies that, even if they wanted to, they can’t test or regulate more than a handful of ingredients. As with most things concerning your health and welfare in the commercial marketplace, it’s up to you to CYA – or, more accurately, to decide what skincare products will C your A, and other parts of your anatomy.

Read labels, right? Well, yeah, but a lot of those poisons aren’t on labels, because they’re used in the manufacture of the final chemical products, are disguised as initials, are adulterants allowed at “safe levels, or, like the Paraben sisters (sneaky little estrogen mimics that throw off hormone balance in women and men), are part of fragrance or color combinations protected as trade secrets. unfBeyond Crimes and

Punishment Scarcity is the unconscious punishment many of us accept for our perceived transgressions.

by Christina Allen We’re often bound to people we don’t like, trust, or respect, through our grudges, fears and hatred. These are people who have hurt, rejected, or abandoned us. Some crimes are personal, others hit at the hearts of our race, gender, or sexuality. Some have done unthinkable things, others have just offended us. In any case, we hold court in our minds – and then execute sentences that keep them forever accountable. We know we’re supposed to forgive and move on, but we feel that excuses their behavior. If we stop holding our grudge, to whom will they answer? Someone has to remember. If we let them off the hook, how will we know they’ve paid for their transgressions? We punish them so we’ll know someone has – because we fear they’ll do it again.

Saint Peter and the life review. This takes great energy, however, even when it’s simply a dialogue in our minds. Many of us who are seeking justice in the world miss the trials we conduct against ourselves, inside. People who have had Near Death Experiences say it wasn’t Peter who met them at the Pearly Gates, but a reflection of their own self, giving them a complete life review. In fact, their NDE afforded them a second chance to get it right, profoundly changing the course of their lives. We don’t have to wait until we almost die, however, to see the trials and punishments to which we subject ourselves, unconsciously. We just have to look at the scarcity we’re trying to overcome. While we may actually have done something unsavory in this life, or in a past lifetime, many of the judgments we carry about ourselves come from misconceptions about other peoples’ actions. When a loved one can’t connect because of their dysfunctions, we may think it’s due to our own shortcomings. There may even be feelings of inadequacy passed down through our family lines. All we know is that we feel shame, and an intangible culpability that deems us unworthy.

16

Perhaps it’s money, social status, or even love from an equal partner. When we feel we don’t deserve it, we’ll sabotage ourselves, and settle for less. We then begin the long, uphill battle of trying to redeem ourselves, pitting ourselves forever against another, striving for what we, alone, have denied ourselves. Worthiness is an evaluation, however, a judgment someone has made. It’s not an intrinsic personal characteristic. If you’re caught in lack, ask yourself – who’s made this judgment? A lifetime is not meant to be a long penance for misdeeds and misconduct, real or imagined. In accepting ourselves as we are, we can stop asking others to punish us. This is not a penal colony made of thistles and thorns, unless we make it so. It’s a beautiful garden planet. The hate must go, the self-hate, the hate of others. It’s divisive – and only creates more strife.

We all make mistakes. Some are worse than others, some deserve a period of reflection and punishment, to be sure. Our true crimes, however, come from not doing the healing work necessary to take responsibility for our actions and learn from them. Ultimately, we must process the pain, forgive ourselves, forgive others – and then let it go. Peace starts within. Divisiveness exists in the world as long as judgment exists within the individuals that comprise it. To forgive doesn’t mean we condone bad behavior, it means we accept what happened, and turn it over. Remember. Learn. Then cultivate a trust in something higher. Open up – and then let it go. By creating oneness within, we do our part in healing the world. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). THE TIDES OF LIFE Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (Part 2)

by Ged Sumner and Steve Haines The human form takes shape from a ball of cells, and the first eight weeks of life give many clues for understanding how the adult body heals. As life progresses, you’re shaped by patterns of experience. Certain experiences can overwhelm your resources, since you’re hardwired to respond to overwhelming and traumatic experiences by contracting away from danger. Control mechanisms – nervous, hormonal, and immune – take you immediately into states of activation (flight or fight) or dissociation (freeze). Biodynamic forces represent the inherent adaptability of the body, its continual striving for health. How much you’re affected by an event depends on your relationship to biodynamic health.

The good news – and the histiory. We evolved to respond quickly to unsafe situations, and have the innate ability to process and overcome trauma. We would not survive as a species if this were not the case. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy is a method of supporting safe, contained processing of traumatic experiences, including hard trauma from single overwhelming events, or soft trauma – the slow accumulation of stress and tension from multiple distressing experiences. W.G. Sutherland, the founder of craniosacral work, named its ordering principle the breath of life, and the practice of biodynamic health stems from that principle. Towards the end of his life in the early 1950’s, Sutherland’s writing underwent a shift emphasizing not just the mechanics and infinitesimal movements of body structures, but also an increasing reverence for the breath of life – what he called liquid light, the tide-like ebbing and flowing in the fluids of the body. The cranial approach was passed on through a lineage of osteopaths, the most prominent being Rollin Becker and James Jealous. In the 1970s, an American osteopath, Dr. John Upledger, observed the distinct, regular movement of a dural tube (the tough membrane surrounding and protecting the spinal cord) during surgery on a patient’s neck. He studied Sutherland’s work, did his own experiments, and caused a schism by starting to train non-osteopaths in what he called “craniosacral therapy.” James Jealous adapted the term biodynamic from his study of the embryologist Erich Blechschmidt. Jealous calls

18

his work the “biodynamic model of osteopathy in the cranial field,” and emphasizes the embryo – a very powerful motif in biodynamics – as being ever present in the living organism. Biodynamic principles began to be applied to craniosacral therapy through Franklyn Sills and teachers at the Karuna Institute in the UK in the 1990s. There is now an International Affiliation of Biodynamic Trainings (IABT), consisting of eight schools. The biodynamic approach is one in which the main focus is forces at work within the human system via mid tide, long tide and dynamic stillness, based on insights from the later years of Sutherland’s life.

Birth as a defining experience. Relating to early experiences coded in the body is an important part of cranial work. Birth can leave a trail of patterns that affect future events and behaviors – and bringing awareness and choice to habitual responses and deep imprints is a huge part of biodynamic craniosacral therapy. Human bodies are amazing, having the ability to heal, change, and adapt to everything life throws at them. The first stage in healing is simply becoming more aware of your body, trusting its intelligence, and appreciating how it moves and flows in its continual striving. When you watch the tides of the biodynamic breath of life, it’s as if the body is made of sand or seaweed, and the movement of the ocean is reshaping and smoothing out the contours. The action of the tide highlights the body’s forms and patterns, bringing awareness and choice to habitual responses, imprints, and deep reflexes embedded in your body and mind. Biodynamics is an attempt to appreciate the whole of things, and surrender to the intelligence in the body that will choose the best way to heal. Change happens in the still moments, where you come back to relating to what has always been around you. Ged Sumner and Steve Haines of Body Intelligence are practitioners and international teachers of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. Body Intelligence offers a comprehensive IABT certified course in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, with an introductory talk in Austin August 31. BREATHWORK Learning from Dolphins, Masters of the Sea

by Rima Star (Part 3) In the 1980s I became a mother of three – three pregnancies, three births. I labored and birthed my children in water, amazed at the benefits of an aquatic environment. Both Mom and baby were supported, enjoying the whole process. I thought about our aquatic cousins, dolphins and whales – mammals, living comfortably in the ocean, breathing, birthing, and living in community.

Who was influencing whom? Were dolphins and whales inspiring land mammals to remember our aquatic origins? Is that why women dream about water environments during pregnancy? I thought about this, assisting families during pregnancy, birth, and bonding in a pool of water, facilitating aquatic breath sessions with non-pregnant individuals. In 1988, a woman talked with me after a presentation. She’d just spent fourteen years observing the same pod of dolphins, inviting me to meet them. Being with creatures I considered masters of breath was a must. One key interest was to maximize my ability to breathe, fully and freely. As marine mammals, dolphins don’t have gills, coming to the surface of the water to breathe through the blowhole on the top of their heads, allowing them to rest at the water’s surface and have enough oxygen with minimal effort.. Unlike us, their air passage and esophagus are separate, preventing them from accidentally sucking up water and drowning. They can’t be completely unconscious when they rest or sleep, however. Different species can hold their breath three to twenty minutes for underwater dives. Being in open water with dolphins was an experience. They swam in sync with me, a snail’s pace for them. Allowing my breathing and moving to blend with and be influenced by them, I realized what a dispensation we receive as breathing land mammals.

We can be sloppy and ineffective in our breathing, and still live a healthy, long life. I floated in the middle of a small dolphin pod while they were resting, their version of sleeping, for hours. They continued to swim in their sleep circle, occasionally looking at me with one open eye, as if I were a benign participant in their dream world for that day. They could have slept anywhere in that big ocean – yet we chose that same space.

Imagine

Open your heart and mind, and…

by John Randolph Price

When things seem to be out of sorts, remember imagination is the power that created this world. Knowing this, understanding we’re the channel for the power, we don’t have to put up with a life of illusory roller-coasters. We weren’t created to be victims, so let’s rewrite the script we’ve given ourselves. I’m writing this because sometimes I forget the tomorrows of my life are controlled by the man in the mirror. I’m not leaving God out of the equation. I’m just reminding us the Presence within can only do for us what the Presence can do through us. You know what happens when we pray for a problem to be solved while focusing primarily on the problem. The mess gets messier. In my book The Angels Within Us, we read: Imagination should be thought of as the creation of precise thoughtforms – substantial mental images in mind – and the ability to use those images to change energy and release into manifestation the reality of our true nature. Everything in our lives is the visible manifestation of the thoughtforms we have consciously or unconsciously created. If illness, poverty or discord rule our world, that is how we are using our power of imagination – through a wrong manipulation of mental matter. If wholeness, abundance and harmony are in evidence, our thoughtforms have been created under spiritual law, with understanding, and have been extended into the phenomenal world to fulfill their mission. Put into words and pictures the end result, in a time frame of now. Complete the experience in your mind of having, doing, being to such an extent that you literally change the dynamics of your energy field with a significant uplifting, and a belief that it is done! Think it, feel it, know it. Keep at it until the full demonstration is complete. A word of caution from experience – see the end result without seeing how it comes to pass. Rely on the creative wisdom of your Holiness to work out all the details. Just expect Divine Fulfillment, in perfect ways and under Grace. Isn’t it wonderful to know we can create any kind of life we choose? N Reconnection, Reconnective Healing, and the difference Reconnection and Reconective Healing, both founded by Dr. Eric Pearl, are two parts to a natural healing system requiring no complicated technique, rituals, or belief. Reconnective Healing, in fact, can be learned in a matter of days. t 3FDPOOFDUJPO is a procedure in which a practitioner works above and around the body to realign the axiatonal grid, a meridian-like structure of internal energy. It’s evolutionary in nature – a way to declare being open to the possibility of experiencing the fullness of what a joyful life of balance and highest potential has to offer, and being solidly grounded and connected to who you are, to the Earth, and to your idea of the Universe or Source. t 3FDPOOFDUJWF )FBMJOH sessions are also done above and around the body, in person or from a distance. Practitioners say no more than three are usually necessary, and one may be enough. (It’s recommended you have at least one Reconnective Healing session before doing a Reconnection.) It’s not a therapy or treatment – practitioners become catalysts, but don’t actually do the healing. The frequencies of energy, light, and information have an intelligenceof their own.

All manner of results can occur. Reconnective Healing is a way of recognizing areas in your life – physical, mental, spiritual, emotional – that can benefit from assistance and balance, and stating you’re ready to trust whatever healing takes place is for your highest good. Three people with the same areas of concern may experience three very different results. In one study, Reconnective Healing was tested alongside physical therapy and other energy modalities on patients with limited range of shoulder motion. The results? Reconnective Healing increased range of motion twenty-six degrees, other energy modalities twenty degrees, and physical therapy twelve degrees. If the physical affliction isn’t immediately restored to balance but the emotional state is – that’s still a healing. As Dr. Eric Pearl, founder of The Reconnection, says, “If you’re lucky, your healing will come in the form you anticipate. If you’re really lucky, your healing will come in a form you’ve not even dreamed of – one which the Universe has specifically in mind for you.â€? POPPINS FRESH WARNING: The following article contains snippets from virus songs that will, quite possibly, burrow their way into your brain, staying there until they drive you crazy. Proceed at your own (Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious) risk. (Hah – got you.)

Just about everyone knows the 1964 Disney film about the nanny who descends on her bumbershoot, bringing love, light, and spoonfuls of sugar into the life of an uptight British banker’s family. What’s not common knowledge is that the film was based on the first two of eight books by one P.L. Travers, the pen name of an Australian woman raised in England. (Her real name was Helen Lyndon Goff, and her family always called her “Lyndon,” which could explain both the pen name and the move to England.)

Flying. Travers was a close follower of the charismatic and controversial mystic George Gurdjieff, and spent a couple of summers in America living with the Hopi, Navajo, and Pueblo. Her first publisher was one of the English boys who was the inspiration for Peter Pan. She was, in other words, not exactly a stranger to the idea of mystery, magic, and people who could fly. P.L. wasn’t altogether happy with the film, particularly the animated sequences, as documented in the 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks, loosely based on her early life. Tom Hanks played Disney as an avuncular foil who eventually charms her into giving him the go-ahead for the film. In actuality, she had to embarrass Disney Inc. into an invite to the premier, later stipulating she’d have complete artistic control of future stage versions.

Good on ‘er, as they say Down Under. In a strange and synchronistic twist of events, Emma Thompson plays Travers in Saving Mr. Banks and also played the title role in Nanny McPhee, an unrelated but strangely similar version of a nanny who drifts into the lives of English children, magically transforming them. The Poppins currently showing as the Summer Musical at Austin’s Zach Theatre, through September 4, stars the incomparable Jill Blackwood as everybody’s favorite nanny, and is directed by Zach’s Dave Steakley, with new music and lyrics. Oh, yeah. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious wasn’t just made up for the film – it was an old-fashioned slang term, adapted for the film score. If you say it loud enough, you’ll always sound – well, you know. Austin’s ZACH, through Sept. 4. www.ZachTheatre.org

Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, What is my life purpose and why am I here? Symphony, 47, Hutto, TX Dear Symphony, Your purpose is to become a small master as you teach, heal, and bless. You are here to accomplish. Lord Maitreya has spoken.

Dear Ashtara, I keep getting the message to move to the LA area. Is this good? Also, my old boyfriend came back in my life. How does he feel about me? Lisa, 37, Austin, TX Dear Lisa, It looks like next September is a great time to go to Los Angeles because you will be ready to start your business and begin life again. Don’t fret about your old boyfriend. He is weary of trying to figure you out. His love abounds. His feelings are tattered. Be friends until the end. Your next step is to find a space and start work. Your angels Ashtar, Sandalfon, Zadkiel, Gabriel and Melchizedek are at your helm. Go with gusto.

Dear Ashtara, My roommate and I are a couple of novice witches who struggle with alcoholism. Please share with us some daily meditative thoughts, spells, and chants to keep us on the right track regarding our alcoholism and our budding talents as witches. Rhonda and Lisa, 29 and 37, Austin, TX Dear Rhonda and Lisa, It seems that each of you have huge destinies. For example, Lisa, you are here to be a designer. Before you were born you told God Himself that you were going to start your own design firm. God deemed it and then you were born. Maybe you are drinking too much because

26

the path you are taking now is not what you are destined to do. You also came to Earth, probably last time, to become a mother. As far as being a better witch, maybe you could quote the following: “Every day, my life will be better and better. Every day, I will achieve more greatness. Each and every day, my destiny will fulfill me.” And, Rhonda, before you were born, God said, “Believe in yourself. And I will take you the whole way in this lifetime.” When you drink, do it with pleasure instead of pain. Or try not to do it at all. Know you were born to be a world healer, as well as a great lawyer. Both of you girls have a wonderful future. Lisa, your highest teachers are Sandalfon, Michael, and Gabriel, who are trying to get through to you every day. Rhonda, your highest guide and master teacher is Lord Maitreya. He should be speaking through you during this coming year.

Dear Ashtara, What is my gift? Who are my teachers? Helena, 52, Austin, TX Dear Helena, Your gifts are teaching, healing, and artistic practices coupled with metaphysical and spiritual teachings. You are to find your “teacher within” this year. His name is Archangel Metatron. Your guardian is Gabriel, the angel. His name is love personified, and he is there for you always.

The T he H Heartwakers eartwakers Club Club

RADICAL HONESTY REVISITED The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli Everyone knows that honesty is a virtue. When a loved one detects your lie, the pain and consequences are obvious. But even if that secret stays dutifully kept, a relationship suffers from the passing off of phony truths, just as a diet of artificial ingredients can keep a person alive, while allowing them to wither. One attempted solution is the Radical Honesty technique, which encourages blunt, uncensored communication no matter how painful or taboo the subject – the idea being, with no walls between us, nothing can be hidden. But does this in fact create the desired effect of deeper intimacy and stronger trust? Not always, and here’s why.

Lovers without borders. No one likes the idea of putting up emotional walls, but that shouldn’t be confused with having healthy boundaries. The latter are not made of suspicion or avoidance; they’re made of self-knowledge about where you’re at and what you’re able to take on. The problem with Radical Honesty is that it promotes a disregard for the other person’s emotional carrying capacity. It becomes too easy to burden someone else with your every thought and feeling when they don’t have the strength or will (or obligation) to process them on top of their own. When confronted with a hurtful truth we’re not equipped to handle, we typically cope in one of three ways: t *O EFGFOTJWFOFTT XF SFKFDU UIF JOGPSNBUJPO FOUJSFMZ without even considering it. t 8F HJWF JU XBZ NPSF XFJHIU UIBO JU EFTFSWFT PCTFTT over it, value it above our own feelings, and use it to justify existing insecurities. This leads to a spiraling hypersensitivity that seeks constant assurance. t 8BOUJOH UP CF NPSF iNBUVSFw UIBO UIBU XF EFUBDI from our emotional reaction, intellectualize the situation, and hide from our own vulnerability.

Just like sexual intimacy, emotional intimacy requires consent. And, also like sexual intimacy, not everything is about your release. There’s a difference between lying – which sabotages someone’s ability to calibrate reality or feel empathy – and

knowing when we’d just be dumping junk on our neighbor’s lawn. That entitled approach to honesty recklessly denies the intricate nature of building trust. It takes time, perceptivity, and, well – manners. The goal is always to help the other person hear the truth. If your partner is feeling self-conscious and you aim to reassure her of her body’s inherent worth, it’s counterproductive to say, “You are beautiful and I love you – but, sure, I wish your breasts were bigger.” What does your desire have to do with her inherent worth? Nothing. It may be true, but it’s irrelevant, and ultimately distracts from what you mean to convey. Sometimes you’re directly asked to share something you know will distract from the truth – like if that girlfriend were to ask, “Hey, do you wish my breasts were bigger?” Instead of lying or feeling forced into a conversation you’re not comfortable having, ask that you not be used to distract from the real issue at hand, which is undoubtedly bigger than any one person’s subjective and evolving opinion. Practice expressing (and accepting) that not everyone feels safe or clear enough at any given time to disclose the nuances of their more problematic feelings.

Physician, heal thyself! Unrestrained Radical Honesty, however, does have an important place – inside you. Before you can be honest with someone else, you must master the recognition of your own feelings, motivations, and defense mechanisms. This, too, is a process that takes patience and compassion, but it’s the only firm foundation for living in truth. Indeed, honesty is a virtue – so long as you use it as a tool for understanding, not as a way to hurt or control yourself, or those you fear might abandon you. The good news is, the better you balance honesty with the honoring of healthy boundaries, the more you cultivate trust. And where trust grows, so grows the courage to dig deeper, to share more willfully, and to hear your truths more clearly.
