Here are some reviews from actual Southeast Texas Tiger Rock students: My son and I have been with Mid County TKD for 6 years now. It is something we share and has become part of our lives and the way we live. I highly recommend it not only for adults and kids, but for families to participate together. Confidence, self-awareness, discipline, respect, and commitment are just a few attributes that are developed and learned through the teachings of Master Wayne Mathews and all the great instructors at the school… Attends Tiger Rock Mid County My son has been to a couple different martial arts academies... Tiger Rock Bridge City is by FAR the best yet. We look forward to many more years and many more accomplishments with our “family” at this establishment. Attends Tiger Rock Bridge City

Southeast Texas Family Road Trip Series

Nacogdoches bills itself as “The Oldest Town in Texas”. Other venerable towns stake their own claims, but there is no doubt that Nacogdoches has a lot of history.

Their Nacogdoches – Neches Saline Road was originally a trail used by the Caddo Indians. The tribe grew cotton, hunted the once plentiful bear around Nacogdoches, and were heavily tattooed. Later the road was used by: the first missionaries coming up from Mexico, a brisk salt trade, and Kentucky volunteers on their way to The Alamo. Interesting, but probably not the kind of Nacogdoches weekend your kids are looking for. Here are the attractions that will get them excited: Cherokee Trace Safari Nestled in the lush piney woods of East Texas, Cherokee Trace Drivethru Safari is a wildlife park that is home to an amazing variety of wildlife. See over a dozen exotic and endangered species that thrive in an open habitat similar to their native territory. Enjoy a self-paced and self-guided drive through the hills and open savannahs of this 300-acre preserve. Wildlife species include: Eland, Zebra, Watusi, Blackbuck, Aoudad, Alligators, Axis Deer, Barasingha, Canadian Wood Bison, Capybara, Camels, Emu, Fallow Deer, Feral Hogs, Highland Cattle, Javelina, Khaki Campbell, Lechwe, Llama, Miniature Donkeys, Pere David Deer, Red Deer, Red Kangaroo, Rhea, Rocky Mountain Elk, Rouen, Running Ducks, Scimitar – Horned Oryx, Sika Deer, Wild Turkey, Water Buffalo, Watusi, White Tail Deer, Wildebeest, Yak, Zebu, and more.

Many of us will never be able to go on an African photo safari. This is an affordable (and convenient) alternative. SETX Family Tip: Have fun preparing for your trip by looking up the animals whose names you and your child do not recognize. Print out pictures or save them on your tablet to help identify them. You can even make a checklist to see how many you can spot on your safari.

Stephen F. Austin University We have a tradition of taking our children to at least one university a year. We’ve been doing it since they were young. They have run on the University of Texas football field, met with an academic advisor at Lamar (about their early enrollment program), and tailgated at an SFA football game. SFA sprawls over a beautiful campus right in the heart of Nacogdoches. Nacogdoches is a true college town. It is large enough so that there is always something to do, but it is just small enough that you do not feel lost or overwhelmed. Take a stroll around campus, audit a class, and take in a football or basketball game. Do you have high school students? They have two “Showcase Saturday” events scheduled for Spring 2017: February 18. Noon – 5p March 25. Noon – 5p SETX Family Tip: For kids under high school age, minimize the focus on academics. Play Frisbee on the grounds, enjoy a game, stroll around campus with ice cream. The idea is to give them a super positive association with being in college. Here are some Dolli’s Diner highlights:

Where to eat in Nacogdoches Our SETX Family “Don’t Miss” pick is Auntie Pasta’s. The Italian restaurant is housed in a giant old warehouse next to the train tracks bordering downtown. Appetizers, salads, and entrees are all of the highest quality. I would imagine that the desserts are just as good, but we have always been too stuffed to find out.

x Nutty Jack Stack: 3 banana pecan flapjacks with caramel topping x Cuban Sandwich: All of the flavor without burning up your frequent flyer miles. Ham, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard pressed and grilled for the perfect texture and flavor.

Here is our guide to a perfect meal: x Their fresh baked bread with olive oil and spices is wonderful. It could be a meal on its own.

x Feeling crazy? Try the Nutty O’Brien. Nutella, bacon, and banana grilled on Texas Toast. x Visiting in winter? Check out the Homemade Chili. Ask for cheese and onions for a down home feel.

x Start with the shrimp wontons. Shrimp, cheese, bacon, and serrano peppers wrapped up in wontons and fried. The black cherry mustard sauce really ties it all together.

x For dessert enjoy Break Pudding, Cobbler with Ice Cream, or keep the nostalgic feel with their Shakes, Malts, Floats, and Ice Cream Sundaes.

x For your entrée, ask for the pasta carbonara. It is not currently on the menu, but they will still prepare it upon request. Delicious. Portions are suitable for sharing, in fact we would recommend it. It is probably your only chance of ever finding out how good the desserts are. Still hungry? Try Dolli’s Diner. The size of their expansive menu will bring to mind true Manhattan style diners, but their version has a lot of comfort food with an emphasis on fresh local ingredients. Like a New York diner, you can enjoy any menu item any time of day. Turkey dinner for breakfast? No problem. Nac Jack Stack (blueberry pancakes) for supper? You’ve got it.
