Rock On
Coughing Up Hairballs Flower Remedies, Six-packs, and Processing Pesky Emotions by Michael Abedin No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. Luke 5: 37 Start playing around with your energy field, and things pop up. That new treatment, seminar, or modality can hit you like a power surge – or like new wine in old skins. Old stuff you thought you were done with can rise up like Dracula from his coffin and bite you in the butt, and before you know it your new wine is soaking into the ground faster than mixed metaphors in a lead paragraph. Old, traumatic stuff is familiar, comfortably uncomfortable, old wine you’ve acquired a taste for. New is scary, and can plop you into a tete a tete (or some downright mano a mano) with the Ghost of Christmas Past. What to do?
What not to do. Don’t wallow. It’s good to find root causes, but don’t beat yourself up trying to resolve long-ago problems or old hurts. The story keeps you stuck – it’s how you feel about it that’s important. Buried feelings keep the same stories showing back up, with different costuming. The job of feelings? Be felt. Let them do that, and they can move on. It’s not always pretty, but neither is watching a cat cough up a hairball. Cats are Zen masters, though, moving on to the next moment (or hairball) without another thought – as should you. Try to disassemble the hairball, and you can get caught up in tricky New Age guilt trips disguised as processing. (Whatever did I do to attract this?) The slope from attract to deserve is short and slippery, and can slide you right back into a wood pew, hearing once again how you were born a sinner. Sometimes the lesson to be learned is a simple one – that was really stupid, and I should never do it again.
Send me flowers. The flower remedies created by English physician Edward Bach in the 1930’s are handy tools for dealing with troublesome mental and emotional states that, left to marinate, can become troublesome physical states. By trial and error and close observation of folks, he came up with thirty-nine remedies, using flowering plants homeopathically prepared in tincture form. They can be used for immediate, acute states that pop up, or for deeper, long-term stuff – or, ideally, in a synchronistic blend of several remedies for both. They’re subtle, safe, free of side effects or reactions with other substances, easy to use on your own or with a quick consultation, and a good addition to a holistic practice, where hairballs can get coughed up pretty regularly.
It’s easy to build a basic starter kit, a Bach six-pack, either for personal use or in a practice. A good one to start with is Walnut, for big transitions. It’s the link-breaker that helps you release old ties to the past, and gives you earplugs for the Siren’s song (Wait, come back, we’re not done with you…), and a good one for any practitioner, to keep from picking up other folks’ emotional wooleyboogers. Austin All Natural publisher and editor Michael Abedin is a Reiki Master Teacher and a flower remedy consultant. Join him for A Six Pack of Bach, a free introduction to the history and use of Bach’s remedies, at Natural Grocers in Cedar Park. Saturday, June 18, 12-1pm. 1335 E. Whitestone Blvd. Bldg G-17, 78613.
