A Letter to Our Readers How do you follow a January cover of a fine natural magazine featuring a fluffy white dog doing yoga? Either touching, tasteful artwork honoring the romance of Valentine’s Day, or the next animal on the Chinese calendar – wearing sunglasses.

There’s a no-brainer, especially if February’s new year belongs to the Monkey. Find a fine specimen of Monkeyhood with short hair and a full beard who’s just a nose ring away from looking right at home in any hipster hangout in what was once Austin, and it’s a done deal.

Whyy do so many New Age types want to sit and visualize, e, but but not n t get up and act?? no Whyy do so many people deceive themselves with magical thinking? thinki king? ki “You can blame it on Star Wars,” Mathew said.

Well, I’ve never seen a Star Wars movie.

None of them.

Or read any of the books.

To bring myself current, I watched the first film from 1977.

I nodded off several times during it.

While lines like May The Force be with you, stood out, they were inaccurate to me.

Since “The Force” is always with you, a more accurate line would be, “May you be with the Force.”

The latter would remind you to align yourself with The Force.

But George Lucas didn’t ask my opinion.

The second one was in 1980, The Empire Strikes Back.

Apparently that’s the movie where a lot of things are accomplished with “Jedi mind tricks” and thought alone.

And apparently a lot of people assumed they could do the same if their mind were only stronger.

Good luck with that.

I don’t want to blame the movies, though.

The theme of mind over matter appears everywhere, in metaphysical literature as well as popular culture.

You’ll find it in comic books as well as bestselling books.

You’ll find it in Richard Bach’s Illusions and The Messiah’s Handbook and on television shows such as Flash and Super Girl.

Who doesn’t want to have the ability to create out of thought alone, or make things appear with a few magic words?

Who doesn’t want to have super powers?

Who doesn’t want to be Superman?

Or Superwoman?

The thing is, life doesn’t work like that.

You were given a body and a mind, and the ability to use both.

We are not brains in jars.

We are brains in bodies.

When we use both, then we can attract miracles.

But the miracles appear through natural means.

Even Wallace Wattles said those exact words – natural means – in his famous 1915 book, The Science of Getting Rich.

He stated that it’s the combination of mind and action that leads to attracting results.

It’s not just mind.

It’s not just body.

It’s both.

If I pick up a horseshoe and “will” it to bend but not actually try to bend it, I’ll just be holding a horseshoe.

Nothing will happen.

Butt if that’s th all you do, you probably won’t attract anything.

You might even become skeptical or critical.

You’ll say, “This mind stuff doesn’t work!�

Of course it doesn’t – if you’re only using your mind.

But add your literal action, and you begin to co-create what you want into being.

It’s still not likely that what you want will just appear, like in a Star Wars or Harry Potter movie.

I’m not ruling magic out. I believe in magic and miracles. I also believe we live in a “no limits� universe, where we can probably do what some would say is impossible, with the right mindset and proper action.

I’m just reminding you that you have a body for a reason.

Use it to aid in the attraction of your goal.

Use it for action.

There is real magic in the world – it’s using your mind and your body to achieve a specific end goal.

For example, if I want to write a book, I don’t sit and think it into reality.

Instead, I use every mind trick I know – from visualizing to Nevillizing to The Remembering Process and more – to get my mind around the idea of what I want.

And then I start writing.

I do something.

And it’s the combination of both mind and action that leads to me being an author.

None of this is a slam against Star Wars. I’m not blaming the movies at all. I’m told the latest installment, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is spectacular.

Just remember that movies and television shows program you, usually unconsciously and subconsciously.

Recently I watched the movie The Martian and came away from it realizing the focus was always on solutions.

It taught an “Anything can be solved,� attitude.

I liked it.

And recently An A nd n d I rece re cent cen n saw the movie The Walk, the true story off a young man with the “impossible� dream of walking a tightrope across the World Trade towers in New York City.

And he did it.

The movie conveyed the message that virtually anything is possible.

I liked it, too.

Star Wars is great entertainment – and it’s great fun to imagine having no limits, due to mind power alone.

Just don’t think you can pay the bills with a Jedi Mind TTrick.

Yes, I’m a sack of broken eggs I always have an unmade bed Don’t you – Rolling Stones, Monkey Man Well… don’t you?

If not, get ready – February 8 kicks off the Year of the Fire Monkey on the Chinese calendar.

The Monkey is a mischief-maker who can break a sack of eggs and mess up a bed quicker than anyone else, and the Fire Monkey is the most outrageous and freespirited member of the clan.

Chinese Calendar 101 – the refresher course.

The Buddha, so the story goes, called a get-together of all the animals, and twelve of them showed up, each getting a year named in their honor that would exhibit their particular characteristics. (The Rat hitched a ride on the back of the Ox and jumped off and ran ahead so he’d be first.)

Each critter’s year would also be influenced by one of the Five Elements – Fire, Water, Earth, Metal, and Wood – that would modify it a bit. Each animal pops up once every twelve years, and each specific elemental animal every sixty years.

The next Monkey Year, then, is 2028, and next Fire Monkey year is 2076, in case you’re making plans for a reunion or something.

Got all that?

Sounds complicated – but keep reading. It gets better.

The Chinese calendar is solar and lunar, and the year commences on a different date in January or February each year, based on the length of time that transpires between the first new moon and the shadow of a swallow returning to Capistrano falling on a certain brick in the Great Wall of China, or some such. (No wonder their stock market’s tanking.)

If you’re born in January or February, btw, better dig a little deeper than your Moo Goo Gai Pan-stained placemat at the Chinese buffet to figure out your animal persuasion – could be the difference between being an Ox or a Rat.

Broken eggs and unmade beds.

Monkeys are clever, creative little guys who sometimes make a mess of things in the creative process. The Monkey King is a major character in Chinese folklore – a rascal, a magical Robin Hood whose intentions are good but whose methods can be a little disruptive at times.

Disruption is the key to Monkey years, and disruption, while not necessarily for the faint of heart, isn’t always a bad thing.

You have to break a few eggs, the saying goes, to make an omelet – and anything done right in a bed probably ought to mess it up a bit.

2016, then, is shaping up as a year of vastly entertaining chaos. (Just take a look at the presidential campaign.)

There is, of course, opportunity in chaos – although the old motivarional speaker’s standby, the one where the Chinese character for chaos or crisis is made up of the characters for danger and opportunity, is bogus. (Probably made up by a Monkey.) Whether you’re of the dive in and get messy persuasion, or the make your move while the smoke’s clearing persuasion, 2016 might just be your cup of Monkey wine.

If you have the constitution for it, Fire Monkey years are said to be good for unique startups and out-of the-box ventures. When old instituitons and ideas are disrupted, the door’s wide open for new ones – and Money is just 1K away from Monkey, right?

Monkey years are flamboyant and yang to the core, a time when words speak loud and actions speak louder.

To give you an idea, Monkeys of note include da Vinci, LBJ, both Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Little Richard, and that ol’ Monkey Man himself – Mick Jagger.

The meek may inherit the Earth one day, (although they’ll be afraid to come claim it) but it probably won’t be this year. Drop your quarter in the slot and hang on tight – 2016 promises to be a wild ride, and a good time to shine.

Austin is one of the most health and fitness-oriented cities in the U.S. – yoga, runners, swimmers, bicyclists, crossfitters, bootcampers, and 5 and 10K’ers are everywhere. So how come there’s not a healthy restaurant on every corner?

Like everywhere else, there’s a plethora of places serving what the January issue of Bon Appetit magazine calls the new trend, Healthy-ish – comfort food that also happens to be good for you. There are also plenty of V, VEG, and GF menu items on menus, along with local and even organic ingredients.

New transplants from other big metropolitan areas, however, are often surprised to find a dearth of exclusively vegetarian and vegan indoor restaurants, even though there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan food trucks. Vegetarian stalwarts Mr. Natural and Mother’s CafÊ have been around for decades, the vegan Counter Culture is a relative newcomer that started out as a food truck before getting a roof over its head, and there are no longer any Austin restaurants that come to mind that are focusing exclusively on raw food.

Why not? Where’s the no-beef?

The magic number.

Natural Injectable THERAPIES

by Dr. Matthew Carpenter Giving a medication with a hypodermic needle has been one of the greatest advances in modern medicine, and it’s only a little over a hundred years old.

If medication is given orally, a huge dose is needed to achieve the concentration necessary in the target tissue, and the rest of the body is frequently poisoned unnecessarily.

Delivering a specific drug directly to the site, however, requires a much smaller dose. Some tissues that are disconnected from the whole, such as in cancer, can sometimes only be reached with a needle.

Needling allows the simulation of acupuncture points and dry needling of trigger points. With a fluid-bolus (a mass of injectable fluid), scar tissue can be broken up mechanically, adhesive tissue-planes can be gently separated, and normal anatomy can often be restored where there was a distortion due to trauma or infection.

Beyond anything else, the needle stick often will bring up held-back emotions and memories stored in injected tissue.

These emotional releases are often the most important part of a healing intervention.

Sinus infections.

Because we do “normal” dental procedures in my office, injectable therapies are used as they relate to improving lymphatic drainage before surgery, and injectable ozone is used as a pre-conditioning tool to reduce infection before surgery (for root canals or cavitation lesions) and for inflammation. Pre-treating an area of the mouth with injectable ozone gas has been shown in research to reduce post-surgical pain and inflammation as much as fifty percent.

Injectable therapies are also used with other types of chronic head and neck infection– namely, sinus and tonsil infections. Sinus infections are the most common and energydraining infections in the human race, and most modern approaches (antibiotics, surgery) can be damaging, and are frequently ineffective.

I help treat sinus infections using a combination of different injectable therapies designed to support the body’s natural detox channels, break up points of infection in the bone and sinus cavities, and stimulate new healing by enhancing the body’s ability to heal.

To accomplish this, I use prolotherapy, which incorporates homeopathic injectable remedies and procaine. Procaine is a component of traditional German neural therapy which has a property of repolarizing or resetting the function of the inside nerve. This has potential to reset function to the muscle or gland that the nerve innervates.

I also use injectable ozone to treat sinus infections because of its ability to “crawl,” or travel to sites of infection.

Ozone kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites equally, and is ideal when you consider the terrain of the sinuses.

In addition, injectable therapy is used to stimulate the head and neck and help drain infection. A lymphatic protocol using procaine and homeopathic injectables can reenergize your lymph nodes manually and energetically, creating profound effects more naturally and safely.

by Christina Allen One of the most crippling side effects of being highly sensitive is running high levels of anxiety. Sensitives, or SuperCeptors, are highly tuned to pick up on the nuances of their environments, keeping their bodies forever on alert.

They are not the only ones, however. Anyone who has been imprinted by a stressful or traumatic period in their life also has a brain tempered for further stress.

Stored memories.

In the first five years of our lives everyone’s brain is being tuned for how it’s going to react to the world. If those first years are filled with high levels of stress, we develop a brain prepared for more. Unfortunately, this creates a trigger-happy stress response, ready for danger behind every corner.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is the circuit in the brain responsible for stress response. There are two other major players in our stress response as well – the amygdala and the hippocampus. The hippocampus is thought to be in charge of learning and memory. If we touch a hot stove, for example, we want to store a memory of that event so we avoid it in the future. Thus, every time the HPA axis is stimulated, the hippocampus gets a signal too.

The amygdala is a more cognitive in nature. It works with the hippocampus to decide whether something has the potential for being a stressful situation. In effect it anticipates stress, based on what has happened before, and activates the HPA axis accordingly.

Phantoms and possums.

Unfortunately, the amygdala can generate stress responses by seeing phantoms as easily as by seeing real dangers. Many of our energetic imprints from trauma in this lifetime – or even others – can set off the same response, without an event actually having to happen. For this reason, the first order of business in regulating your stress response is to clear energetic imprints, or triggers, around trauma from your Lightbody.

As the soul heals, you can begin the long process of reprogramming your hyper-vigilant brain.

When the stress system is activated, it creates reactions of fight, flight or freeze. Many people, when challenged with stressful situations, will turn and face the problem, ready to fight it head on. Others, however, will run for the hills.

The third possibility is the onset of immobility, or a freeze, that grips the person’s will until it lets up. People who respond this way are overwhelmed with anxiety and can’t make a move or a decision until it lifts. They want to curl up, like the possum that plays dead, until the environment feels safe again.

Many Sensitives struggle with being in freeze-response states frequently, as they live in a world bustling with unseen information. Add pressure like performing well on an exam, and their brains can lock down, making it impossible to study, let alone excel. There are medications available, but they often have side effects that dampen sensitivity, undermining the authenticity. Sensitives rely on for guidance.

Freeze can lead to a deep spiral of depression, as one’s self esteem collapses when they can’t act – and believe it will never end. Freeze is a temporary state, however, and all that is re-quired is a shift in consciousness.

It’s important to get out of the limbic brain and into the higher levels of function like the Associative cortex. The great Spiritual Masters intuitively retrain their brains, with breathing (pranayama), chanting and meditation.

Sitting meditations are often difficult for someone in freeze, however, so a practice that involves the whole body is often more preferable. For this reason dance, yoga and walks in Nature are especially effective. Each movement reintegrates the body with the mind through breath and rhythm.

If you’re in freeze, take the first step to a thaw. Get into sunlight, breathe – move!

by Marge Captain What’s the difference between alkaline and acid, and why does it matter to your body?

Acidity and alkalinity are based on hydrogen ions (the H in pH), with a pH factor of 7 being a mid-point – above 7 is alkaline, below 7 is acid. Healthy blood is slightly alkaline, around 7.35 to 7.45. Most of what you eat and drink falls in a pH range of 0-14, and some foods that are acidic can become alkaline in your body.

If you’re under a lot of stress; if you eat fried foods, processed foods, white bread, red meat; drink sports energy drinks, sodas, alcohol, coffee; use artificial sweeteners, food additives, take prescription drugs, or smoke – chances are you’re contributing to an acidic state in your body.

Acid breakdown.

When it’s acidic, the body can start to break down in various ways – taking calcium from the bones, for instance, to neutralize blood acidity, contributing to osteoporosis. You may age quicker, have lower immunity, lack energy. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7, but water from a tap (and a lot of bottled water) has been polluted by chemicals and toxins and can be acidic, with little potential to reduce oxidation and inflammation, encouraging the growth of free radicals that can damage cells, organs, and DNA. Acidic water has more protons than electrons, with a positive charge, but most substances with a negative charge are alkaline. One way to achieve the transformation to alkalinity is by drinking water that’s been restructured through ionization, turning acidic dead water into natural, alkaline water and creating abundant negative OH- ions that can balance pH and help neutralize and excrete acids and toxins.

Not only is the pH of ionized, alkaline water higher, those extra electrons neutralize destructive free radicals circulating throughout the body, making it a potent antioxidant.

KIDS, CONFIDENCE, AND MARTIAL ARTS

by Michael Abedin Kids face challenges today a lot of parents wouldn’t recognize from their own childhood. Social status in school, family settings, and extracurricular activities has always been one of the toughest parts of being a kid, with feelings, pride, and the occasional nose, shin, or other body part getting hurt.

Even when no physical damage is done, self-esteem can take big hits – and social media have elevated teasing, namecalling, and whispering behind the back to an art form. The microscopic eye of the internet, making everything a major incident, has turned bullying into a big deal – and most kids could use some coping tools.

Enter the Dragon.

Well, maybe not the dragon – although if you found one your kid could take to school that would breathe fire on anyone who messes with him, you’d be the coolest parent ever. Failing that, martial arts training can be a good way to give kids the ability to deal with physical, verbal, and other forms of confrontation or intimidation.

On a physical level, kids get into scraps when someone bumps someone, someone pushes, someone pushes back, then everyone’s hollering, kicking shins, rolling on the ground – and in the principal’s office. A well-run martial arts class will have a structured setting where kids can drill basic moves and practice self-defense techniques with each other, with minimal or no contact.

This not only gives a student a set of applicable skills to respond to, say, a grab or push, it gives them a chance to see that they can control a situation, and a better idea of what is and isn’t a threat calling for a response, demystifying and taking a lot of the fear out of confrontations. When fear goes, self-confidence increases – and confidence and a no-big-deal attitude is what keeps bullies from picking on you.

Don’t be surprised, however, to see subtle but profound improvements, not only in confidence but also in fitness, focus, and discipline – some parents have even reported improvement in learning disabilities.

There’s a lot of buzz around Tantra. What is it? How can you use it to make your romance rock?

There are many different ways to use the Sanskritbased word Tantra, describing the interweaving of parts and expansion of self. One interpretation would be energetic yoga, used to improve spirituality – and your love life.

Over six thousand years old, Tantra shares roots with many other disciplines – yoga, martial arts, energy healing. Not a religion, belief system, or even philosophy, it incorporates such techniques as meditation, movement, breath, sound, dance, and (you guessed it) sex.

But humans grow and change and the world itself shifts, forcing adaptation, and when it comes to relationships the question is clear.

You don’t have to answer all these questions – just let them inspire ones that matter most. If you’re not monogamous, this is a great space to state preferences on disclosure (how much you want to know about your partner’s other relations, on what timeframe).

How can people stay together, without staying put?

Unless each person explicitly defines what living “happily” means, the odds of success are about as good as winning an Olympic medal with no training strategy. Grand achievements take planning and support – athletes have coaches, entrepreneurs have mentors, scholars have advisors. Lovers are no different, except we must train ourselves to provide these things for each other.

Using a full-page version of the grid below, mark down your “Non-Negotiables” – whatever you feel you must have or can’t live without, in daily life and the long run. Need an hour of alone time every day to write or exercise? Put this in Quadrant A. Important to you to never live in a place with long snowy winters?

Put that in Quadrant D. Don’t worry about distinguishing needs from preferences at this stage; just be as honest as possible about what makes you happy.

Fill out another copy of the same grid with relationship NonNegotiables. How much togetherness is too much? Is having mutual friends important, a willing travel companion, agreeing on politics and religion? Have special boundaries or needs around sex and physical contact? What about a family?

Once you’re comfortable with your answers, share and compare! Be ready to explain your wants, bearing in mind that not everything has or requires a rational explanation. Don’t worry if you happen upon conflicting points. This does not necessarily indicate incompatibility; it merely draws attention to a potential issue, before crisis can.

For example, both people say they must live near their parents, which initially seems like an impasse. Through discussion they discover he’s mainly thinking of support for future children, she’s concerned with her father’s ailing health – and there are, in fact, many combinations of resolutions that meet both needs.

Define.

Needless to say, compromise works best when everyone is in good spirits, so take a break if you need to. When you’re ready, re-adjourn with another clean copy of the NonNegotiables grid. This time, plot compound relationship needs, factoring in individual goals and boundaries from previous grids.

What you have now is more than a vow – it’s a custom constitution, designed to ensure your relationship doesn’t just last, but steers everyone towards personal fulfillment.

Refine.

Even the best constitution responds to changing circumstances, which is why we have amendments. When struggles arise, find a moment of mutual calmness and review your grid. Listen to each other un-defensively, identify issues, and decide whether your constitution needs updating or if you just need more patience, tact, or creativity in upholding it.

Not everything can be worked out. But if someday a breakup is necessary, you’ll understand it for what it is – the divergence of two distinct happinesses, not the “fault” of one person or another. Every heart deserves that comfort, and it’s well worth the extra effort.
